More people than ever look to Escape By Mark Sherry The Ford Escape continues to be sold in big numbers, and it is easy to see why. First introduced in 2000, the Escape has had its best years in each of the last two. More than 306,000 vehicles were sold in both 2014 and 2015, the first time the Escape topped the 300,000 mark. Given the continued improvements Ford has made to the Escape—including some new styling for the 2017 model—expect those numbers to continue to be up there. Mike Burkart Ford of Plymouth has 2017 Ford Escapes on the lot now, and Tom Blagoue set me up to drive one in the SE package. That is the middle package between the S and the Titanium in the Ford Escape. Given that the Escape is in the same crossover class as the vehicle I currently drive on a daily basis, I knew it would be roomy and comfortable but still handle well—and the Escape did not disappoint. Almost a decade newer than the vehicle I drive, the 2017 Ford Escape has all the improved comforts and features which have swept the vehicle industry in recent years. With so many new vehicles offering the same or similar features these days, I tend to notice the little things which I have not seen before or which set a vehicle apart from others I have driven. In the 2017 Ford Escape, those things include the metallic bar-type inside door handles, the huge inside air vents both front and rear, deep storage wells between the front seats, a capless fuel filler, and blind spot mirrors. Those are minor things which probably would not determine whether or not a person buys a vehicle, but they all add up to providing even more style to a vehicle which is also long on functionality. One of those functions which Blagoue told me to keep an eye out for is the auto start-stop technology in the 2017 Ford Escape. It is standard on models with the EcoBoost engine. It

The 2017 Ford Escape actually shuts the engine off when you come to a complete stop—at a stop sign or light, in bumper-to-bumper traffic, or when picking someone up— and then seamlessly restarts the engine when you release the brake pedal. This helps to both optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. The 2017 Ford Escape I drove is rated at 24 mpg (22 city, 28 highway) but could do better than that with the start-stop technology. The technology offers continue inside the vehicle. People can recharge their phones and tablets with up to to two smart charging USB ports. They can power laptops and other small electronics with a covered 110-volt power outlet which accepts a household-style plug. Sync 3 is available which offers

the ability to place and answer calls and control music from other devices. An available eight-inch color LCD screen in the dashboard has swipe and pinch-to-zoom functionality within the navigation app. The Escape I drove only had the 4.2-inch screen, but there also was a wealth of vehicle and performance information available on the screen between the speedometer and tachometer. The Sync Connect feature allows the person to remotely start, lock, and unlock their vehicle using their phone. Sync AppLink allows for voice control of some mobile apps. Comfort feautures include the options of a heated steering wheel and 10-way power, heated, leather-trimmed front seats. In the way of convenience is the foot-activated rear liftgate which

opens to up to 68 cubic feet of cargo space. The Escape also can handle some light towing (up to 3,500 pounds) with the right engine and tow packages. The Ford Escape also will get you to where you are going safely with features such as adaptive cruise control, the new lane-keeping system, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and a rear-view camera. Four-wheel drive systems are available as well, and a park assist system is available in the Titanium package. With a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $28,255 and a list of features a mile long, it is easy to see why the Ford Escape is more popular than ever.

Parents play key role in teaching children to drive Parents do not prepare their teens to drive as well as they did a decade ago. According to a new AAA survey of 142 driving instructors across America, 65 percent said the decline in quality parental involvement has added to the challenges facing young drivers. They also reported that parents often set a bad example through their own behaviors. “With all the other challenges teens face learning to drive, it is critical for parents to re-engage in the process,” said Nick Jarmusz, Wisconsin director of public affairs for AAA—The Auto Club Group. “Teens can’t succeed on the road unless those closest to them make proper training a priority and set a good example behind the wheel.” In the survey Skills of Novice Teen Drivers, driving instructors also revealed the top three mistakes teens make when learning to drive: n Speeding—traveling over posted speed limits or too fast for road conditions; n Distraction—interacting with a cell phone, talking with passengers or looking at other objects in the vehicle; n Poor visual scanning—driving with tunnel vision and not properly scanning the road for risks or hazards. Past research shows that teens with

parents who impose stricter driving limits reported fewer crashes and traffic violations. AAA recommends parents stay actively involved in coaching their teens through the learning-to-drive process by: n having conversations early and often about the dangers of speeding and distraction; n taking the time to practice driving with their teens in varying conditions; n adopting a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement that takes the learning to drive process in stages and sets family rules for the road; n setting a good example by minimizing distractions and speeding when driving. AAA also recommends that teens preparing for the responsibility of driving should enroll in a driver education program that teaches how to avoid driver distraction and other safety skills. Resources to help parents choose a class and coach their teen through the learning-to-drive process can be found on AAA’s award-winning Web site TeenDriving.AAA.com. Charged up again

2nd generation of Chevrolet Volt goes even further By Mark Sherry When the Chevrolet Volt first came on the scene around 2010, it made a bit of a splash in this area—then seemed to evaporate just as quickly. According to Ed Hartmann of Vogel Chevrolet in Kiel, a big part of the issue was that for a while Volts were only available for sale on the West and East coasts. He said one local customer indeed had to purchase their Volt from New York. In addition, Chevrolet was also busy designing the second generation of the Volt. That vehicle is now on the market, and as of a few weeks ago Vogel Chevrolet had one on the lot. The key improvement in the second generation Volt seems to be—not surprisingly—improved EPA ratings. The 2015 Volt had an electric-only range of 38 miles, but the new Volt is rated at 53 miles on a single charge. Gains in efficiency allow the new Volt to improve its fuel economy in gasolineonly mode to 42 mpg, up from 37 mpg in the first-generation Volt. The official second-generation Volt’s rating for combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode is 106 mpg gasoline equivalent (MPG-e), up from 98 MPG-e for the 2015 first-generation model. Better batteries Improved battery technology found in so many things these days is the key to Volt’s EPA improvements. The 18.4 kWh battery pack has new chemistry which stores 20 percent more electrical energy and uses fewer cells—192 compared to 288 on the 2014 Volt. The electric motors weigh 100 pounds less, and less weight means better mileage. GM engineers have said the secondgeneration Volt was developed using extensive input from Volt owners. “Volt owners relish the challenge of stretching their gas-free miles,” Hartmann said. Volt owners are likely to be very energy conscious people, and Chevrolet makes it easy for those people to track their energy usage with a feature on the car’s color-touch screen which scores the driver’s energy usage in a variety of categories. Connected to the improved electric/gas mileage in the new Volt is an improved range for the vehicle. The

The 2017 Chevrolet Volt Volt can travel up to 420 miles on a full charge and a full tank of gas, and Chevrolet officials expect Volt owners to travel 1,000 miles between gas fillups if they are regularly charging their vehicle. But once those improved EPA ratings are out of the way, it seemed to me that Chevrolet wants to treat the Volt as just another new car—albeit a very sharp, well-equipped new car. Hybrids are apparently becoming better understood and accepted and—although there is still a long way to go if they are to overtake gas-only vehicles in numbers—Chevrolet wants to put a lot of focus on the non-power train features of the new Volt. Hartmann pointed out that the new Volt has an upgraded dashboard display. Chevrolet calls the interior of the Volt “visually stunning,” and it is indeed impressive—but certainly very comparable to most new vehicles today.

I test drove a Premier version of the 2017 Volt so it was well equipped. For those of you who have not driven an electric car and are wondering if it has the same get-up-and-go as a traditional vehicle, let me assure you it does. I made a couple quick rights out of Vogel Chevrolet onto STH 32/57, going from 35 mph up the viaduct hill and reaching 55 with no problem by the time I got to the top of the hill. Driving a silent vehicle I did more city driving than usual on this test drive and found the Volt to perform extremely well. My biggest concern was whether or not pedestrians would hear me coming and might walk out in front of the vehicle, but I later read that at least the first-generation Volts had an alarm which would warn pedestrians of the oncoming car. Once again, most of the rest of my Volt experience was enjoying many of the same features found on other new

vehicles today—the color touch-screen, 4G Wi-Fi availability, cellphone connectivity, and much more. One energy-related feature which I found interesting is “Regen on Demand.” Through a steering wheelmounted paddle, Regen on Demand transfers the kinetic energy from the motion of the Volt and stores it in the battery while slowing down the vehicle. The Volt can be charged in 4.5 hours using a 240-volt charging system which needs to be professionally installed, or use the standard 120-volt portable cord which charges the battery in 13 hours. The Volt I drove had a list price of about $40,000, but tax credits of up to $7,500 still may be available for buyers. Hartmann suggested that prospective owners check that out with their accountants. And in the meantime, check out the 2017 Volt at Vogel Chevrolet.

Prepare cars for winter conditions

October is Car Care Month and AAA is reminding drivers about the importance of properly maintaining their vehicles. There are a few simple things every driver can do to make sure their car is ready for the road. “Learning how to handle common maintenance issues is beneficial to anyone who gets behind the wheel,” said Nick Jarmusz, Wisconsin director of public affairs for AAA—The Auto Club Group. “Proper maintenance can extend the life of your vehicle and help prevent costly repairs.” Below are four simple car care practices AAA recommends every motorist perform on a regular basis: Check the air and wear of tires About 83 percent of American do not know how to properly inflate their tires, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association. The pressure on all tires— including the spare—should be checked monthly, with a quality gauge when the tires are cold. Proper pressure levels can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker most often located on the driverside door jamb. Do not use the pressure stamped on the sidewall of the tire. Note that the pressure levels on some cars are different for the front and rear tires. Check the tread depth on each tire by placing a quarter upside down in the tread grooves. If the top of Washington’s head is exposed at any point, it is time to start shopping for new tires. Also, look for uneven tire wear when checking the tread. This can be an indication of suspension, wheel balance or alignment problems that need to be addressed. Ensure battery is properly charged Extreme temperatures break down car batteries internally and can accelerate the rate of corrosion on battery terminals, leading to insufficient electrical power and the risk of being stranded without warning. At every oil change, check the battery cables and ensure they are securely attached to the terminals. Clean the terminals if there are signs of corrosion. Disconnecting the cables to clean the hidden areas where they contact the battery terminals is the best way to remove external corrosion. Most car batteries have a three to five year service life, depending on local climate and vehicle usage patterns. If your battery is getting old, have it tested at a AAA Approved Auto Repair shop or by using AAA Mobile Battery Service to determine if it needs to be replaced. Keep those wipers working Inspect the wiper blades monthly. Check to see if they are worn, cracked or rigid with age. Damaged wiper blades will not adequately remove debris, compromising the driver’s vision and safety. The life of a rubber insert is typically six to 12 months depending on its exposure to heat, dirt, sunlight, acid rain, and ozone. Streaking and chattering are common clues that the rubber is breaking down and a replacement is needed. The windshield washer fluid reservoir should be checked monthly. Top it off with a solution formulated to aid in the removal of insects or other debris. In winter, use a solution that will not freeze Turn to prepare/page 9

AAA says premium fuel wasted

American drivers wasted more than $2.1 billion dollars in the last year by using premium-grade gasoline in vehicles designed to run on regular fuel, according to new AAA research. Currently fewer than 20 percent of vehicles on the road require high octane fuel, while the vast majority (70 percent) are designed to operate on regular gasoline. A national survey of motorists revealed that 16.5 million U.S. drivers used

Little things, big ride

Kia Forte packs a lot of features into 2017 models By Mark Sherry A lot of little things add up to make the 2017 Kia Forte a big driving experience. “We’re getting a lot of interest in this car,” said Sales Consultant Jim Chasteen of Dick Brantmeier FordLincoln-Kia in Sheboygan. While Chasteen said much of that interest is coming from young professionals, that is certainly not the exclusive customer segment for the Forte. Helping to make the vehicle attractive to anyone is the great lease package currently being offered by Dick Brantmeier Ford-Lincoln-Kia through the end of the year—$259 per month with a $1,500 down payment. The Forte I test drove had a sticker price of just $22,991, so purchasing the vehicle is a great option as well. What struck me most about the Forte are all the amenities available to the driver. The steering wheel contains as many controls as I’ve ever seen on a vehicle, including all the audio system controls and the cruise control functions. Those two things are not unusual in today’s vehicles, but there just seems to be more and varied buttons and knobs on the Forte’s steering wheel. I also was impressed by the metal gas and brake pedals in the S Premium version of the Forte which I drove, as well as a matching metal left foot rest plate to save on wearing down interior carpeting. The S Premium package is new for 2017 and, according to Chasteen, puts together some of the most desired features of the Kia Forte. For a vehicle with a sticker price in the low twenties, the 2017 Kia Forte just has a lot going for it. That list includes ventilated and heated driver and front passenger seats, power seats with memory settings, dual-zone automatic temperature controls, and very ample and accessible storage compartments— always a big key with my lifestyle. The Forte also does not skimp in the

From voice-command navigation to Bluetooth wireless and SiriusXM satellite radio, the Forte has it all. That list continues in the area of safety where blind spot detection, autonomous emergency braking, and lane departure warning systems are offered. “It makes the driving experience potentially safer,” Chasteen added. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered as part of the entertainment aspects of the vehicle. Simply connect your compatible smartphone with a USB cable and then be able to use the vehicle to navigate to destinations, make phone calls, retrieve voice mails and text messages, and respond

to them verbally. Compatible apps are also displayed on the seven-inch color touch screen. While the Forte I drove is classified as a compact car, there are three models available including the crossoversized Koup. Like all Kia models, the Forte comes with an industry-leading 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty. Other features available in the Kia Forte include a power sunroof, paddle shifters, and a Smart Trunk feature which automatically unlocks the trunk if you stand behind it for three seconds with the Smart Key in your possession. That would be especially appreciated if your hands are full. Under the hood of the Forte I drove was a 2L four-cylinder which provided

more than ample power to cruise at highway speeds. With various drive modes available—including Eco and Sport—the Forte has a 38 mpg highway rating, although Chasteen said some customers have reported doing even better than that. Chasteen also said reliability ratings continue to be very high on Kia models—in other words, fewer trips to the repair shop are needed compared to other makes of vehicles. Some Kia models are made at the company’s $1.1 billion manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia which employs over 15,000 people. Experts suggest replacing wiper blades annually With all the rain Wisconsin has endured this year and now the snow season not far off, the Russ Darrow Group reminds drivers of the importance of properly functioning windshield wipers during heavy rains. Automotive experts suggest that drivers replace windshield wipers annually. “According to reviews from Consumer Reports, most wipers begin to decrease in effectiveness after approximately six months,” said Chuck Moeller, service director at Russ Darrow Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Milwaukee. “Poorly functioning wipers can make visibility difficult in rainy conditions and lead to dangerous driving situations.” Being without properly functioning windshield wipers in the rain or a storm can decrease visibility and cause accidents. “During rain or harsher conditions, your vehicle’s wipers can quickly clear away rain and mud from your field of vision,” Moeller said. “Worn blades lose their effectiveness over time, severely reducing your visibility and can even damage your windshield.” There are two common types of windshield wiper. The first is the traditional

bracket-style wiper blade, which are the best performing style in rainy conditions; however, the metal framework of these wipers tends to freeze in cold or snowy conditions, causing poor wiping performance. The other common windshield wiper type is a beam blade. In contrast to bracket-style blades, beam wipers consist of one blade with support built in. This wiper blade type performs far better in winter weather than bracket-style wipers, but can sometimes leave streaks on windshields in rainy conditions. Keeping a car’s windshield clear of dirt and debris is the best method for ensuring proper function from windshield wipers. Moeller recommends monthly inspection of windshield wipers, and that a pair of windshield wipers should always be replaced at the same time. When it comes to choosing which windshield wipers to purchase, the best course of action is to research. “Consumer Reports provides extensive reviews of windshield wiper types and brands,” Moeller said. “Wipers perform differently on various vehicle models and drivers are advised to research the

Versatile Acadia offers many amenities By Faye Burg Meyer Motors of Plymouth is well known throughout the area and beyond for happy and satisfied customers who continue to return to the dealership year after year for all of their vehicle needs. Not all gasoline created equally, AAA reports

Many motorists choose a gas station based on the location or price, but a recent AAA study reveals there is a difference in fuel quality depending on where you purchase your gas. One-third of retailers nationwide sell gasolines that meet Top Tier™ standards among all octane grades. Gasolines that earn the Top Tier™ designation are marketed as containing enhanced, engine-cleaning detergent additives that promote optimal vehicle performance by minimizing engine deposits. AAA’s independent laboratory testing compared gasolines that meet Top Tier™ standards with gasoline brands that do not participate in the automaker-backed program. Among brands tested, non-Top Tier™ gasolines caused 19 times more engine deposits than Top Tier™ brands after just 4,000 miles of simulated driving. Such carbon deposits are known to

reduce fuel economy, increase emissions and negatively impact vehicle performance, particularly on newer vehicles. “AAA was surprised to learn the extent to which detergent additives impact gasoline quality,” said Kevin Bakewell, senior vice president, chief public affairs officer, AAA—The Auto Club Group. “This study does not suggest that using non-Top Tier™ fuel will damage your vehicle. However, results clearly show that engines running on Top Tier™ gasoline will operate at their optimal level.” In response to increasing levels of carbon deposits in modern engine designs, the Environmental Protection Agency mandated a minimum level of detergent for all gasoline sold in the U.S. in 1996; however, some automakers believe the minimum does not go far enough to ensure optimal vehicle performance and their ability to meet increasingly-

Despite the fact that two-thirds of U.S. drivers believe there is a difference in quality of gasoline sold by different gas stations, a AAA survey reveals that Americans value convenience and price over quality when it comes to selecting a gas station. Three-quarters of U.S. drivers choose a gas station based on location (75 percent) or price (73 percent). Nearly one-third (29 percent) of U.S drivers choose a gas station based on a rewards program. Only 12 percent of U.S. drivers select a gas station based on whether the gasoline contains an enhanced detergent package.

More Americans driving more miles, study says The number of Americans on the road and the average number of miles driven by each motorist increased in 2015, according to a new survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The research also found that the percentage of Americans aged 16 years and older who reported driving also grew during that time. “The amount of time the average driver spends behind the wheel each year is equivalent to seven 40-hour weeks at the office,” said Jurek Grabowski, research director for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “It’s clear that traveling by car remains a central part of Americans’ lives.” The American Driving Survey is the most current and comprehensive look at how much Americans drive on a daily and yearly basis. It revealed that Americans drove a total of 2.45 trillion miles last year, which is a 2.4 percent increase from 2014. Other survey findings show the following: Approximately 224.8 million Americans aged 16 years and older reported driving in 2015, a 1.5 percent increase from the year before. The total population aged 16 years and older increased by only 1 percent in the same period. Motorists in the Midwest drive more (11,295 miles annually) compared to those in the Northeast (9,328 miles annually) or the West (10,906), but slightly less than those in the South (11,314). The average number of miles driven per driver increased 0.8 percent, from

10,830 in 2014 to 10,919 last year. On average, men report driving 2,314 more miles than women per year and spend 18 percent more time behind the wheel. More than 86 percent of U.S. households have at least one car for every driver in the home and 28 percent report having more cars than drivers. Seniors over the age of 75 drive fewer miles (5,840 annually) than teenagers (7,551 annually). Drivers ages 30 to 49 drive an average of 13,506 miles annually, more than any other age group. On average, Americans drive the most during the fall (October through December) at 31.5 miles daily and drive the least during the winter (January through March) at 26.2 miles daily. “This survey highlights the importance of maintaining our transportation infrastructure as well as planning for future capacity,” said Nick Jarmusz, Wisconsin Director of Public Affairs for AAA—The Auto Club Group. “We must find a way to ensure that sustainable funding is available for these projects on the national, state and local levels.” The new survey results are part of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s annual American Driving Survey, which reveals the driving habits of the American public. The survey data are from a sample of 5,774 drivers who provided information about their daily driving trips in calendar years 2014 and 2015. The AAA Foundation released their first American Driving Survey in 2015.
