Death rate from home fires higher than in ‘80 According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), if you have a reported home fire today, you are more likely to die than you were in 1980. This startling fact is attributed to several factors, including the way homes are built and the contents in them. “Open floor plans and a prevalence of modern synthetic furnishings make homes burn faster and the fires produce deadly smoke and gases within moments,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of outreach and advocacy. According to Carli, you can have as little as two to three minutes to escape a home fire today as compared to eight to ten minutes years ago. These concerns prompted NFPA to create “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13. It emphasizes three basic but critical messages: n Look for places fire can start; n Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm; n Learn two ways out of each room. This year’s Fire Prevention Week messages point to the essentials of home fire safety,” Carli said. “Looking for potential fire hazards in the home, making sure your smoke alarms are working properly, and having a home escape plan that everyone has practiced—these actions can dramatically reduce the loss from home fires.” Motivating the public to take these steps can prove challenging, Carli said, because people do not think they could
have a fire, despite the fact that home is the place they are at greatest risk. Four out of five U.S. fire deaths occur in homes. “Because we have reduced the overall number of fires, there is a general complacency and a lack of action around home fire preparedness and planning,” Carli said. “Our goal for Fire Prevention Week is to make sure people recognize that fire remains a very real risk, and that everyone needs to take action to protect themselves and their families.” For more information about Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme visit www.firepreventionweek.org. Founded in 1896, NFPA is a global, nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss caused by fire, electrical and related hazards. The association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering the NFPA mission. For more information visit www.nfpa.org. All NFPA codes and standards can be viewed online for free at www.nfpa.org/ freeaccess. NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922. According to the National Archives and Records Administration’s Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. Stoves account for 61% of home fires Guardian Safety Solutions International, Inc. (GSSI), the nation’s largest provider of range top fire suppression systems, observed National Burn Awareness Week earlier this year. Based on 2009-’13 annual averages, cooking equipment was the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries, causing 46 percent of home fires that resulted in 19 percent of the home fire deaths and 44 percent of the injuries. Two-thirds of home cooking fires started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. Frying poses the greatest risk of fire (statistics from the National Fire Protection Association). Ranges or cooktops accounted for the majority (61 percent) of home cooking Kiel Ambulance

That’s why we observe fire prevention all year, not just this week,” said Paul Rouse, GSSI’s administrative officer. “The time to protect yourself against a range top fire is before it strikes. By installing the Guardian, you can rest at ease.” He added that kitchens can be retrofitted as well. With the system, a fire can be extinguished in as little as seven seconds. cooking, turn off the stove. n Keep pot handles turned to the back of the stove so children cannot grab them. n Wear short sleeves or tight sleeves while cooking so nothing dangles near a flame. n Keep paper, towels, pot holders, wooden utensils, and curtains away from the cooking area. n Have one or more fire extinguishers handy and know how to use them. n Keep stove tops clean; remove builtup grease and spilled food. n Never throw water on a grease fire—
smother it with a pan lid instead. n Keep children and pets out of the “kid-free” zone three feet from the stove. n Have a fire escape plan, and review and rehearse it often. The Guardian is designed to detect and extinguish cooking fires and at the same time prevents re-ignition. Once it detects heat at a pre-determined temperature, a signal is sent to release the extinguishing agent to suppress the fire and to shut off the gas or electric supply to the stove in order to prevent reigniting. We Salute
Halloween decorations can pose fire safety risks
Children love the costumes, treats, and friendly frights of Halloween parties and going door to door. These can be safe and fun activities for all of us, even younger children. But area firefighters want parents to know that flames can quickly ruin Halloween festivities. You can keep your child safe from fire and burn injuries by following these six tips: n Children are naturally drawn to glowing jack-o’-lanterns and other flickering lights. Instead of flames, use battery-powered candles or flashlights to decorate. Lit candle flames can burn children. If children come too close to the flame, their clothing can catch on fire. Battery-powered candles are the safer choice. n Make sure that all decorations are kept away from flames and other types of heat. n Keep all matches and lighters locked up. They should be in a high
place out of the child’s reach. Teach young children that they must not touch or play with these tools, ever. If they find matches or lighters, they should tell an adult where they are. n Choose a costume with fire safety in mind. Fabric can catch fire if children walk close to flames. Avoid loose fabric and features that dangle or drag behind the child. Keep costume sleeves tight. Look for a fabric label that reads “flame-resistant” or “flame-retardant.” Keep a close eye on your child. Even flame-resistant fabric can burn. n Never let children play with or carry lit candles. Give each child a flashlight to carry while trick-or-treating. Check porches for lit candles, torches, and other flames before letting children approach the door. n The last tip is the most important: Young children need adult supervision at all times. Stay alert. Watch children closely at parties and as they go door to door.

Smoke alarms save lives Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Here’s what you need to know: A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms. When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years. From 2009 to 2013, smoke alarms sounded in more than half (53 percent) of the home fires reported to U.S. fire departments. Three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38 percent) or no working smoke alarms (21 percent). No smoke alarms were present in almost two out of every five (38 percent) home fire deaths. The death rate per 100 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms compared to the rate in homes with working smoke alarms (1.18 deaths versus 0.53 deaths per 100 fires). In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate, almost half (46 percent) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries. Dead batteries caused one-quarter (24 percent) of the smoke alarm failures.

Tips for creating, using home fire escape plan The National Fire Protection Association offers the following tips for escaping a home fire: n A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. Install smoke alarms inside every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. n Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be intercon-
nected. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound. n According to an NFPA survey, only one of every three American households have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. n While 71 percent of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, only 47 percent of those have practiced it.
n One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least six minutes before a fire in their home would become lifethreatening. The time available is often less, and only 8 percent said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out.

Home fire sprinkler systems reduce heat, flames
Home fire sprinklers can dramatically reduce the heat, flames, and smoke produced in a fire. Properly installed and maintained fire sprinklers help save lives. Fire sprinklers have been around for more than a century, protecting commercial and industrial properties and public buildings. What many people do not realize is that the same life-saving technology is also available for homes, where roughly 80 percent of all civilian fire deaths occur. The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Fire Sprinkler Initiative outlines proven, effective ways that home
fire sprinkler advocates can communicate the impact of sprinklers to their decision makers. Visit the initiative’s site for free resources for the fire service and other sprinkler advocates, including fact sheets, videos, a free monthly newsletter, research, and the “Faces of Fire” campaign, which features real people demonstrating the need for home fire sprinklers. The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) is a leading resource for accurate, noncommercial information and materials about home fire sprinklers for consumers, the fire service, builders, and other professionals.
Automatic sprinklers are highly effective and reliable elements of total system designs for fire protection in buildings. According to NFPA’s “U.S. Experience with Sprinklers” report: n the civilian death rate was 81 percent lower in homes with fire sprinklers than in homes without them; n the average firefighter injury rate was nearly 80 percent lower when fire sprinklers were present during fires; n when sprinklers were present, fires were kept to the room of origin 97 percent of the time; n the home fire death rate was 90 percent lower when fire sprinklers and
hardwired smoke alarms were present. By comparison, this death rate is only 18 percent lower when battery-powered smoke alarms are present but automatic extinguishing systems were not. n fire departments typically use roughly 10 times as much water as a fire sprinkler would use to contain a fire; n fire sprinklers are environmentally friendly. They can reduce the amount of water run-off and pollution, fire damage by up to 71 percent, and water usage to fight a home fire by as much as 91 percent; n cigar smoke or burnt toast will not activate a fire sprinkler.

From 2011 to 2015, heating equipment was involved in an estimated 54,030 reported U.S. home structure fires, with associated losses of 480 civilian deaths, 1,470 civilian injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage. These fires accounted for 15 percent of all reported home fires. Based on 2011-’15 annual averages: n Space heaters, whether portable or
stationary, accounted for just over two of every five (43 percent) of home heating fires and four out of five (85 percent) of home heating fire deaths. n The leading factor contributing to home heating fires (28 percent) was failure to clean, principally creosote from solid-fueled heating equipment. n About 48 percent of heating fires occur in December, January, and February.

Five area fire departments—Cleveland, Ada, Haven, Howards Grove, and Johnsonville—work together to offer Star Fire Explorer Post #9005. Members must have completed eighth grade and are between the ages of 14 and 20.
5 area departments work together on Explorer post Fire Service Exploring is a worksitebased program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age, or 15 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday. Fire Service Explorer posts help youths gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers or volunteering in the field of fire service, Exploring offers experiential learning with a lot of funfilled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youths. Star Fire Explorer Post #9005 is a group which consists of five area fire departments—Ada, Haven, Howards Grove, Johnsonville, and Cleveland. Officials of the five departments said they feel there is a need to offer the youths a view of what it means to serve their com-
munity and learn the basics of firefighting in a safe and controlled manner and to learn the life skills needed in this area of service to grow the individual while providing a needed service. The five departments split the time between training the explorer to get a better rounded idea of what firefighting skills are needed to serve the community and get proficient in this area if the explorer would choose this area of profession. The explorers are shown the basics in firefighting and skills needed and also develop their own leadership skills. The post has ample opportunities for service and actually start their own business meeting and run their own club with guidance from the advisors if needed. There are training and business meetings held each month divided by the five departments and they offer many activities within the guidelines set forth by the exploring group.

NFPA says don’t train kids on extinguishers
Cleveland Fire Department
Angie Schuessler
Rank: First Responder Years in department: 6 Age: 42 Training: EMTBasic City of residence: Cleveland Family status: married to Brian, 5 children Place of employment: Bonde’s and Napa
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers the following tips on the use of fire extinguishers. Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called; and the room is not filled with smoke. To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS: Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism. Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side. For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle. Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory. Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher trainings. Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can
make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately. Know when to go. Fire extinguishers are one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have a home fire escape plan and working smoke alarms. NFPA believes that children should not be trained how to operate portable fire extinguishers. Teaching children to use portable fire extinguishers runs counter to NFPA messaging to get out and stay out if there is a fire. Furthermore, children may not have the maturity to operate a portable fire extinguisher properly or decide whether or not a fire can be put out by the extinguisher.

Fire safety important part of life on farm
Ada Fire Department
Fred Meyer
Rank: Firefighter Years in department: 4 Age: 21 Training: State Certified City of residence: Ada Family status: single Occupation: student
Mrs. O’Leary’s cow may have gotten a bad rap but the folktale reminds people that fire safety is an important part of farm life. People, animals, and property are in danger when fire breaks out on the farm. Inspect your barn and outbuildings for fire hazards to reduce the risk of tragic loss. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests the following actions for farmers: n Heat lamps and space heaters are kept a safe distance from anything that can burn. n Heaters are on a sturdy surface and cannot fall over. n Electrical equipment is labeled for agricultural or commercial use.
n All wiring is free from damage. n Extension cords are not used in the barn. n Lightbulbs have covers to protect them from dust, moisture, and breakage. n Damage is identified quickly and repairs are completed with safety in mind. n Dust and cobwebs around electrical outlets and lights are removed. n Oily rags are stored in a closed, metal container away from heat. n Feed, hay, straw, and flammable liquids are stored away from the main barn. n The barn is a smoke-free zone. n Exits are clearly marked and pathways are clear. n Fire drills are held frequently with everyone who uses the barn. n Workers are trained to use fire ex-
tinguishers. n Everyone in the barn knows personal safety is the first priority if a fire breaks out. n Hazard checks take place on a set schedule. The following safety equipment may be required by local building codes and will help protect barns. Install and maintain: n ABC-type fire extinguishers near every exit and within 50 feet from any point in the barn. n Fire alarm system n Sprinkler system n Carbon monoxide detection system Talk with local fire departments to address safety concerns unique to each farm.

Fire Safety! Spread the Word!
In the days of horse-drawn fire carts, Dalmatians did the job of running in front of the horses to clear the path and to guide them to the fire! Today Dalmatians are mascots of firehouses. Sometimes we help to locate people in fires. We also make good guard dogs, watching over the firehouse and the equipment.
Family Fire Safety Checklist Only cook in the kitchen when an adult is helping you.

Share this checklist with your family.
Firefighters rush to the rescue when there is a fire. Did you know that they also work hard to spread the word about fire prevention and safety? Here are 6 ways that we learn about fire safety:

Guardians scholarship offered Thanks to the generosity of businesses which support this annual Guardians section with their advertising, Delta Publications, Inc. annually presents a scholarship to a current or future “Guardian” who is continuing his or her education. Application forms for the scholarship were sent to each department featured in this section, but additional forms can be obtained by contacting Editor Mark Sherry at the Tri-County News, 8942828 or marks@deltapublications.com. The deadline for returning the simple, one-page form is Nov. 15 of each year,
after which the staff of Delta Publications, Inc. selects a winner. In some years when multiple applications are received, more than one winner has been selected. There also have been years in which no applications were received, so any current or future emergency services worker who is taking classes toward furthering their education in the field is encouraged to apply. Guardians from multiple area departments have received scholarships from this program over the years in which the Guardians section has been produced.
