Grand Sport back again

2017 Corvette at Vogel Chevrolet in Kiel has it all By Mark Sherry The phrase “everything old is new again could apply to the 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. The newest version in this classic line of cars traces its roots back to 1963 when five prototypes of the Grand Sport were created with the intent of dominating on the track. According to Chevrolet, the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport was crafted from lightweight materials and packed the power of a 6.2L 377 CI small block V8 engine. All five of those prototypes are still in existence—something which would seem amazing if a person did not know the reverence Corvette owners have for their vehicles. Then in 1996, Corvette brought the Grand Sport back and made a few more than five this time—but not a lot more. Only 1,000 were produced as a way to mark the end of the fourth generation of Corvette production. The 1996 Grand Sport was equipped with the high-performance LT4 V8 in addition to the ZR1 chassis and featured the iconic paint scheme of Admiral Blue with a white stripe and red hash marks. Fast forward 14 more years to 2010 when another version of the Corvette Grand Sport came out, this one with the wider Z06 chassis and featuring the 436 hp 6.2L LS3 V8 engine. It could go from 0 to 60 in 3.95 seconds, and Chevrolet officials said it had an EPA-estimated 26 MPG highway fuel economy—but, really, nobody who buys a Corvette is thinking about fuel efficiency. It has been seven more years, but now Corvette is out with another Grand Sport and Vogel Chevrolet in Kiel has been featuring a classy white 2017 Corvette Grand Sport on its lot over the past couple months. Chevrolet says the 2017 Corvette Grand Sport starts at $65,450. It is obviously not your average car, and the Grand Sport parked in front of Vogel Chevrolet is not your average version of this exceedingly above average sports car. Because of the various packages included on this specific Grand Sport at Vogel, the sticker price

The 2017 Corvette Grand Sport is $99,700. Just so you know that is not a typographical error, here is the number again—$99,700. But there are Corvette owners out there who will pull the trigger at that price. Kelly Johnson, sales manager at Vogel Chevrolet and longtime Corvette owner himself, said it is not out of the question that this Grand Sport could end up being purchased by someone in Chicago or anywhere else in the country. Vogel Chevrolet has sold several Corvettes in recent years, and it certainly helps to have an expert such as Johnson to help prospective buyers. “Corvette is still the king, Johnson said. “Corvette has always been the iconic legend. The current owner of a 1972 Corvette said when he first bought a Corvette he did not understand the reaction he was getting when he drove past other Corvette owners. “When you see a Corvette, you wave to a Corvette, Johnson said. “I couldn’t figure out why all these people were waving to me.

“Corvette is a brand, it’s a household name, he added. “Kids don’t put posters up in their rooms of Ford Tauruses...I would say since I was 3 years old and up it was my car, and it always stayed that way. Asked to list some of the features on the 2017 Corvette Grand Sport parked a few feet away, Johnson said it would be quicker to list features the car does not have. The appearance package of this particular Grand Sport makes it look like a Z06 model but it retained the previous Corvette drive train. The 460 hp V8 can go from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds. The fully electronic convertible top can be lowered with the press of a button or remotely using the key fob— even while driving up to 30 mph—and hides beneath a body-colored tonneau cover. Since Grand Sport was designed from the start to be an open-top vehicle, drivers will not sacrifice performance when the top goes down. This particular Corvette has the Z07 performance package, which in-

cludes unique suspension tuning, large carbon-ceramic brake rotors, and Michelin sport summer-only tires which are built for performance but only on dry roads. Somewhat surprisingly, this Grand Sport is an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic, although a seven-speed manual is standard. The eight-speed paddle-shift transmission offers the smooth control of an automatic but with quick, precise shifts and manual mode for track driving. With the Heritage Package included on the Grand Sport at Vogel Chevrolet, the list of standard and optional features goes on and on. Logo specific floormats and machine-faced aluminum wheels are just a couple features of the Heritage Package. Not surprisingly, this is the most technologically advanced Corvette to date. That includes an available display which projects data near the driver’s line of sight on the windshield, helping them stay informed while they focus on the road ahead.

Tips for maximizing performance of vehicle engines You may not be a legendary stunt driver, but the car you drive today has a lot of technology under the hood. Whether you are commuting to work or heading to the grocery store, you want to get the most out of your engine’s performance. Your daily drive probably does not involve a powerful car, wild icy terrain

or heart-pumping stunts like in the viral video “Titanium Ice inspired by Universal Pictures’ film “The Fate of the Furious, but what you may not realize is today’s engines are smaller, which means they must work harder at very high pressures. To help your engine work smarter, not harder, and to get the most out of your

2017 GMC Terrain offers style, efficiency By Faye Burg With the perfect combination of style, efficiency and utility, the 2017 GMC Terrain is a great choice for drivers on the go. Brenda Eisentraut is happy with her choice of a 2017 GMC Terrain SLE-2 and said the vehicle fits her family and lifestyle well. Eisentraut was interested in leasing and Meyer Motors was her first stop when searching for a vehicle. “I found what I was looking for,” she said, adding the dealership is filled with very nice people. “They helped me get to the point where I wanted to be for a lease payment,” Eisentraut explained. “I originally looked at Acadias, but they were too much money. The Terrain had almost everything the Acadia had and the price wasn’t as high.” Meyer Motors Sales Associate Andrew Ringel enjoyed working with Eisentraut to find the right fit for her needs. “We were able to get Brenda a great deal and she saved a lot of money. We worked for about three weeks to get the right fit,” he said. With front and rear fascia chrome accents, LED daytime running lamps and a three bar grille design, the stylish Terrain is easily noticed. Standard aluminum wheels and programmable power lift gate only add to the wide array of amenities offered for customer’s safety and enjoyment. Advanced acoustics offer a quiet ride while the interior is designed for comfort and functionality. Various safety features including Side Blind Zone, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and OnStar add to the driver’s confidence and help make travel enjoyable. fers an estimated 31-mpg highway, or there is the available 3.6L V-6 engine that offers an estimated 24 mpg highway. StabiliTrak allows the SUV to adjust using power and braking to help maintain control on varying road conditions. Superior technology advancements add to the ease of control with the color touch radio which includes voice-activated Intellilink, navigation system, and USB connectivity. Standard Bluetooth smartphone integration and available 4G Wi-Fi help drivers and passengers stay connected while on the road. Eisentraut enjoys the great gas mileage she receives with the Terrain and likes the smooth ride it provides. “It is

There are multiple map views in addition to continuously updated traffic information. Ringel said the Terrain is a great family vehicle offering great fuel economy and All Wheel Drive capabilities. “It is also very luxurious,” he said, adding the extra trunk space is very inviting for customers. “With low access height, not

only is the floor at a lower height for easy entry and exit, but loading large or heavy items just became easier!” “It was very easy and very simple to work with Meyer Motors,” Eisentraut shared. “They make sure you understand everything and go through everything thoroughly.” For more information on the 2017 GMC Terrain, stop in at Meyer Motors located at 107 Plaza Lane in Plymouth, visit www.gomeyermotors.com, or call Stephanie at (920) 893-1851.

3 tips for making good choice in used car

If you are in the market for a used vehicle, the car-buying process can be both an exciting and daunting experience. Whether you are a first-time buyer or looking for a different model, a car is one of the largest purchases you will ever make. It is not only important to make sure you have the right car for your lifestyle, but one that makes the most sense for your personal financial situation. If you are one of the millions of Americans looking to buy, here are some tips to consider. Get pre-approved Similar to buying a house, it is important to know what you can afford before you start hunting for your dream car. If you will be financing a vehicle, getting pre-approved for a car loan may save you a lot of heartburn during your car search. Interest rates continue to be at historic lows, but it is important to check in on what rates you may qualify for and how it will affect the price of what you can afford. “It’s easy to get caught up in the excite-

ment of looking for a new car and forget about the affordability piece,” said Renee Horne, vice president of Consumer Lending at USAA. “Before you even begin your search, give your lender a call to see what you can actually qualify for and what will fit in your budget.” A good tip to keep in mind is to not let your car payment exceed more than 15 percent of your monthly net income. While you don’t have to stick to it, this rule will help give you a rough estimate of what you may be spending each month. Know what you can afford Knowing what you can afford reaches beyond your car loan payment. Although used cars are typically less expensive, they may have more maintenance and ownership costs. “It’s important to look at the total cost of ownership,” said Heather Pollard, vice president of Auto Experience at USAA. “Everyday expenses such as gas, insurance, taxes, maintenance and future repairs are all associated with owning

a vehicle.” Knowing a rough estimate of these expenses will help you stay on budget in the long run. Simple online loan calculators, like this one at USAA, can help give you an idea of how much you can afford. Narrow your choices With countless choices available, finding the right car for you can be a challenge. Your budget should help narrow some of your choices, but consider your lifestyle as well. Do you have young children or plan to start a family soon? Then you might want

to consider the highest IIHS safety ratings. Do you frequently travel for work? In that case, improved gas mileage and reduced emissions are important factors. Remember, all those extra upgrades come with a higher insurance price tag and are depreciating assets once you drive off the lot. Although you may be more inclined to go after a new car with the latest cutting-edge technology, a pre-owned vehicle may be the better alternative for your lifestyle and budget. Better still, used car prices are the lowest they have been in years.

Equinox: Great vehicle gets even better By Mark Sherry Most of us have heard the saying, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” That could have been said about the Chevrolet Equinox, one of Chevrolet’s best and most consistent sellers almost since the day it was introduced for the 2005 model year and especially over the last half dozen years. U.S. sales have topped 200,000 vehicles each of the past five years, reaching a highwater mark of 277,589 in 2015. But Chevrolet used a different saying in its approach to the Equinox, seemingly saying, “We can make a good thing even better.” That is what the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox offers. Yes, the 2018 models are already out at places such as Vande Hey Brantmeier Chevrolet Buick in Chilton, even though there is still more than half of 2017 left to go. “The response has been good,” said Sales Manager Dennis Kendall of Vande Hey Brantmeier. “It’s bigger than the other stuff it competes with.” The redesigned 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has actually reduced some of its measurements compared to the 2010 to 2017 version, but only slightly—and it has increased room in other areas. Front shoulder room has seen the largest increase at 1.4 inches. All changes—plus or minus—are relatively minute. More important changes But the other changes to the new Equinox are more important and substantial. That includes the introduction of an available 1.6L, 136 hp turbodiesel which is rated at 40 mpg highway. The new Equinox is also 400 pounds lighter than its previous version, 4.7 inches shorter, and has a wheelbase which is 5.2 inches shorter. The reduced weight also helps with gains in fuel efficiency. To preserve ride quality, boost handling performance, and add steering precision, Chevrolet hard-mounted both the front and rear suspension subframes to provide a 20 percent stiffer structure. The Macpherson strut front suspension cradle is now anchored to the frame in six positions instead of four with a stiffening bar running across the structure as well. As a daily driver of an early Pontiac Torrent—virtually the same vehicle as the Equinox of the same year except for some styling differences—I can attest to the fact that my test drive of the 2018 Equinox showed me a vehicle which indeed is built even “tighter” and better than it has been in the past. Package offers a lot Kendall also pointed out that the 2018 Equinox offers the Driver Confident and Convenience Package. That includes rear park assist, rear coss-traffic alert, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, driver and front passenger heated seats, a leatherwrapped steering wheel, and universal home remote. The side mirrors alone in this package have multiple features to them— they are heated, power adjustable, manual folding, the color of the vehicle’s body, and have turn signal indicators on them. I also was intrigued by the power liftgate or, more specifically, the knob and push button switch just to the left of the driver which allows the rear liftgate to be set to open all the way, three-fourths of the way (in case space

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is tight in a garage or elsewhere), or not at all. An available feature allows the liftgate to be opened by passing your foot under the rear of the vehicle in case your hands are full. The black Equinox I drove had the 1.5L, 170 hp turbocharged gas engine with an overall mileage rating of 26. In addition to that engine and the diesel mentioned earlier, a 2.0L, 252 hp turbocharged gas engine also is available. As for features which caught my eye, I really liked the backlit gauge which provides both a digital and more traditional speedometer. I also liked the digital temperature setting readouts on both of the dual climate control knobs. The backup camera is a nice feature, as is the deep storage well between the front seats which also is equipped with a small light which goes on when the lid is opened. More options to like This Equinox had cloth seats, push button all-wheel drive, a convenient location for the USB and MP3 jacks, push button start, lighted interior mirrors, and the touch screen information center found in most new vehicles these days. An available feature on that screen is a virtual bird’s-eye view of the vehicle using four cameras—the standard rear vision camera, a forwardlooking camera in the front grille, and one under each side mirror of the vehicle. Some of the other listed options on the Equinox I drove included a tire pressure monitor, keyless open, a theft deterrent system, and five-year basic Onstar service which Kendall said includes Remote Link. That feature allows drivers to use an app on their phone to remotely start their car. The Teen Driver feature also available on the 2018 Equinox allows parents to give a different remote to young drivers which monitors their driving habits and also sets a maximum radio

volume. I have always been a big fan of the Equinox. It is a car which makes a lot of sense for a lot of different drivers— young, old, single, family, etc. And

now more than a dozen years after it was first introduced, Chevrolet’s very good Equinox has been made even better.

Teen drivers currently in ‘100 Deadliest Days’

New teen drivers ages 16 to 17 are three times as likely as adults to be involved in a deadly crash, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. This alarming finding comes as the “100 Deadliest Days” begin, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when the average number of deadly teen driver crashes climbs 15 percent compared to the rest of the year. Over the past five years, more than 1,600 people were killed in crashes involving inexperienced teen drivers during this deadly period. “Teen crashes spike during the summer months because teens are out of school and on the road,” said Nick Jarmusz, Wisconsin director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “The foundation’s research found that inexperience paired with greater exposure on the road create a deadly combination for teen drivers.” The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s latest study, Rates of Motor Vehicle Crashes, Injuries, and Deaths in Relation to Driver Age, analyzes crash rates per mile driven for all drivers and found that for every mile on the road, drivers ages 16 or 17 are: n 3.9 times as likely as drivers 18 and older to be involved in a crash; n 2.6 times as likely as drivers 18 and older to be involved in a fatal crash; n 4.5 times as likely as drivers 30 to 59 to be involved in a crash; n 3.2 times as likely as drivers 30 to 59 to be involved in a fatal crash. Fatal teen crashes are on the rise. The number of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes increased more than 10 percent from the previous year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 2015 crash data, the latest data available. To reverse this alarming trend, AAA urges parents to help reduce the number of deadly crashes on the road by getting more involved and talking to their teens about the dangers of risky behavior behind the wheel. “Parents are the front line of defense in keeping our roads safer this summer,” Jarmusz said. “It all starts with educating teens about safety on the road and modeling good driving behaviors like staying off the phone

and always buckling up.” Three factors that commonly result in deadly crashes for teen drivers are: 1. Distraction: Distraction plays a role in nearly six out of 10 teen crashes, four times as many as official estimates based on police reports. The top distractions for teens include talking to other passengers in the vehicle and interacting with a smart phone. 2. Not buckling up: In 2015, 60 percent of teen drivers killed in a crash were not wearing a safety belt. Teens who buckle up significantly reduce their risk of dying or being seriously injured in a crash. 3. Speeding: Speeding is a factor in nearly 30 percent of fatal crashes involving teen drivers. A recent AAA survey of driving instructors found that speeding is one of the top three mistakes teens make when learning to drive. To keep roads safer this summer, AAA encourages parents to: n have conversations with their teens early and often about distraction and speeding; n teach by example and minimize risky behavior when driving; n make a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules for teen drivers. TeenDriving.AAA.com has a variety of tools to help prepare parents and teens for the dangerous summer driving season. The online AAA StartSmart program also offers great resources for parents on how to become effective in-car coaches as well as advice on how

to manage their teen’s overall driving privileges. Teens preparing for the responsibility of driving should enroll in a driver education program that teaches how to avoid driver distraction and other safety skills. AAA also offers membership discounts for new teen drivers to help keep them safe on the road in case of an emergency. The Auto Club Group (ACG) is the second largest AAA club in North America. ACG and its affiliates provide membership, insurance, financial services and travel offerings to over 9 million members across 11 states and two U.S. territories including Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; most of Illinois and Minnesota; and a portion of Indiana. ACG belongs to the national AAA federation with more than 57 million members in the U.S. and Canada and whose mission includes protecting and advancing freedom of mobility and improving traffic safety. Motorists can map a route, identify gas prices, find discounts, book a hotel, and access AAA roadside assistance with the AAA Mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Learn more at AAA.com/mobile. AAA clubs can be visited on the internet at AAA.com.

Kia Niro taking on crossover competition By Mark Sherry With plenty of other solid options in classifications such as compact, midsize, and fullsize, Kia has now come out with an all-new vehicle to compete in the crossover category—the 2017 Kia Niro. Based on a recent test drive at Dick Brantmeier Ford-Lincoln-Kia in Sheboygan, once word spreads about the Niro it definitely will give other crossovers a run for their money. “We’re pretty excited,” said Sales Manager Travis Korff of Dick Brantmeier Ford-Lincoln-Kia. “When it first came out we were kind of wondering how it would be received, but the response has been excellent.” There is plenty to talk about when it comes to the Niro, but perhaps the best place to start is the fuel efficiency and all the technology which goes into providing a best-in-class rating of 43 miles per gallon. Korff said some owners are reporting even better results—in the neighborhood of 50 mpg. A parallel hybrid system switches between gasoline and electric power, using the optimum combination of both and recharging the battery when required. The 43 hp electric motor—located between the gas engine and the transmission—propels Niro in allelectric mode. This permanent magnet motor works in combination with the gas engine. Niro’s state-of-the-art 1.56 kwh lithium-ion polymer battery is both lightweight and compact. It powers the electric motor and is recharged through regenerative braking. It is designed for power and durability and is mounted out of the way beneath the rear seats. Kinetic energy is captured when the brakes are applied. The regenerative braking system converts this energy to help charge the battery. Stop-andgo city driving generally entails more charging through braking, whereas on highway trips the gas engine does more of the charging. To help increase fuel efficiency and reduce idling noise, the gas engine shuts off when at a complete stop. That is not a new feature for people who have driven hybrids but for an inexperienced user such as myself it still caused a good deal of interest when I came to a stop in complete silence. As soon as the gas pedal is pressed the Idle Stop & Go automatically restarts Niro with absolutely no lag time. What will be fun to watch for Niro owners is the real-time charge status

w for Ne h c t a W Name s s e n i Bus

The 2017 Kia Niro gauge on the classy, LED-lit gauge console in the vehicle. The gauge shows fuel and battery levels, current fuel efficiency, and whether Niro is in Charge, Eco, or Power modes. The 4.2-inch color screen has an Energy Flow screen with real-time illustrations showing if power is coming from the gas engine, the electric motor, or both. Drivers can scroll to this screen using steering wheel-mounted controls. The Kia Niro takes energy efficiency another step with its Eco-Driving Assistance System option. This system uses Niro’s available navigation system to analyze routes and topography. Its Predictive-Energy Control then helps optimize battery use automatically by precharging the battery before going uphill and using regenerative braking going downhill. The Coasting Guide coaches drivers to take advantage of coasting opportunities to help maximize fuel efficiency. While the extensive technology surrounding the new Kia Niro is the highlight of the vehicle, there are plenty of other features which catch the eye. A few which caught mine include the multiple controls on the steering

wheel, memory settings for the mirrors, heated and ventilated seats, ample head room, and the comfortable, quiet ride—even beyond the quiet expected when the gas engine shuts down. The touch screen (available in seven inches or eight inches) includes a rear camera, and the Touring Ex package on the Niro I drove also had the available front grille package which provides a very sporty look to the vehicle. The Niro I drove also was a Launch Edition which meant it had nicer wheels and a navigation system. Korff said they are seeing a wide variety of customers interested in the Niro. Again, the features of the vehicle which make it friendly toward the environment and the pocketbook have a lot to do with that, but so does the affordable price. People could be driving a new Kia Niro for under $24,000, or they could add all the extras and go as high as about $34,000. A discussion of the safety and performance systems on the Kia Niro could go on and on—from collision warning systems to autonomous emergency braking and much more—but suffice it to say the 2017 Kia Niro is

ready to take on any challenger in the highly popular crossover market. See for yourself—take one for a test drive at Dick Brantmeier Ford-Lincoln-Kia in Sheboygan.

Be ready on road

This summer AAA expects to rescue 7 million American drivers, with the majority facing battery, lock and tirerelated issues. In Wisconsin, AAA expects to rescue over a 63,000 motorists. These numbers could soar higher, with a AAA survey revealing that 4 out of 10 American drivers are unprepared for emergency breakdown situations. With three-quarters of family travelers planning to travel by car to their favorite vacation spot, AAA reminds drivers to take the necessary precautions to ensure they are well prepared for a safe road trip. “Roadside breakdowns continue to rise each year and can be a safety hazard for everyone on the road,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA Wisconsin. “Travelers can minimize their risk by planning ahead.”
