A heartfelt thank you!

To begin to put into words the emotions this experience presented is proving to be quite the challenge. There are so many conicting sentiments circulating right now. To face the terror of witnessing your history, your future, your livelihood up in ames brings sorrow, fear, and so very much uncertainty. However, on the opposite end of the spectrum, to feel the extreme outpour of support from our community is truly heartwarming and yet indescribable. First and foremost, it is imperative that we extend a tremendous THANK YOU to all 12 re departments that came on our behalf. To witness such coordination and dedication is absolutely breathtaking. I believe then number was 128 reghters on the scene, putting their lives on the line, giving their all is something our family cannot even begin to thank enough. Along with the reghting crew, the EMS, police ofcers and city workers, working numerous hours was vital, recognized and deeply valued. Secondly, the immediate reaction and support from local and surrounding businesses was astounding.

The food equipment and support provided to us in our time of despair is something we will cherish forever. And nally, the compassion that has been and is continuing to be bestowed on our family from friends and even complete strangers is something not taken lightly. From the outreach and offers of help to even a simple hug is unbelievable and taken deeply to heart. And that right there is straight up Kiel. The pooling together of this community is simply amazing. This community built us and now is proving to mend us in our time of need and for that we are forever grateful. It’s tough to know what the future holds but it makes it a whole world easier knowing we have such a support team behind us. The Dust Magnet Our kids are always running in and out of the house. This is especially true during the summer. As a result, I was fighting a losing battle with dust until I found this solution. I call it my dust magnet. I took an old 20-inch box fan we had down in the basement and brought it upstairs. I put a furnace filter in front of it and run it on medium. You’d be amazed at how much dust the filter traps. It’s probably not as efficient as those expensive filters, but my only cost was the price of a disposable filter. At first, I had a 20-inch square filter on it, but the motor ran hot. Now I backed off to one that’s 12-inch square, and it works just fine. Tara

The Camping List We love to go camping each summer, but one thing always bothered me. We thought that we had everything we needed until we got to the campsite. Then we discovered that we forgot something. Off to the general store we went to pay crazy prices for simple things. Last year, while we were camping, I made a list of everything that we needed. I’ll review it before we leave to see if there are any additions I need to make. I plan on crossing off each item as we put it in the SUV or suitcase. We don’t plan on spending any more than necessary at the general store this year. Deanna

Fast Food at Home Tired of paying $3 or more for a fast food hamburger? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve solved the problem. When my butcher has ground round on sale, I buy 10 pounds. Once home, I make 1/4 pound patties. I like to add some breadcrumbs, a little oil, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Then I grill them all at once. After grilling, I freeze them with wax paper between each burger. When we want a quick meal, I pull as many as I need from the freezer and pop them into the microwave. Hit the defrost button, and in a few minutes, we have burgers. They taste like they just came off the grill. Colleen

The Perfect Steak at Home I like a great steak, but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford restaurant prices. Therefore, I made an effort to learn how to grill the perfect steak. I start with either a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;primeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;choiceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; cut. I look for lots of fat marbling the steak. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fat that adds to the flavor. I generally buy one thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thicker than I want to serve. When I get home, I rub

both sides generously with salt. Then I put it in the fridge. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best if I can elevate it on a rack, so air can flow around the steak. Then I leave it for two days, flipping after the first day. The steak shrinks as it loses moisture, which concentrates the flavor. I then take it out of the fridge an hour before grilling. The grill should be hot because I want to sear the outside to hold in

juices. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cut the steak to see if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done. Instead, I poke it with my finger. It should indent, but mostly spring back. When itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done, I let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Sometimes I pour a little melted butter on it while it sits. It takes a bit of effort, but I end up with the perfect steak for an affordable price. Alex

Trip Memories I like to have a record of our family vacations. I used to save postcards, napkins, receipts, or anything else that described our trip. Now I keep a digital record. All through the trip, I take pictures of anything thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something I want to remember. Instead of keeping a menu, I just take a picture of it. I do the same thing with ticket stubs, etc. When I get home, I assemble a PowerPoint with all the pictures and anything that I want to write about the memory. A Clean Start I’ve found that laundry soap builds up in my washer. I try using less with each wash, but that’s not enough. Now about every six months, I do a few loads of laundry using baking soda as my detergent.
