Dear Editor, “A Hot Meal and A Kind Word”… more than just a slogan, rallying cry, or talking point. For anyone involved in the Thanksgiving Day Express, those words are heartfelt and absolute. The Thanksgiving Day Express Committee is grateful for the outpouring of support and goodwill generated from our local community in helping to deliver nearly 500 meals this year to worthy recipients this Thanksgiving. We completed our 34th year and have now eclipsed 12,400 total meals during that span. We are thankful for the support of caring individuals who donate their time, money and pies for our Thanksgiving undertaking. We are thankful to participating businesses, organizations and area volunteer fire departments who donate food, supplies, time and money to our effort. We cannot possibly begin to list you by name without omitting someone, but you know who you are, and we only exist because of you. Our endeavor is unique; we DELIVER right to the homes of our recipients, where they can enjoy a wonderfully prepared meal in the warmth, safety and comfort of their own homes. This year we welcomed back so many friendly faces and also got to know new volunteers – of all ages – who gather and are focused on just one task… “How can I help?” We put aside agendas, conveniences and myriad stresses that daily life presents, because on Thanksgiving morning at the Chilton Eagles Hall, it is all about collaboration and generosity of spirit, and for that nearly six-hour session, everyone comes together around a common mission – delivering a hot meal, a genuine smile, and a kind word (or two) to a special individual or family. We travel to homes in and around Chilton, New Holstein, Kiel, Stockbridge, Hilbert, St Anna, Potter, Reedsville, Brillion, St. Nazianz, Valders, Sherwood and rural areas in between. So, mark your calendars for Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017 – our 35th attempt at this amazing adventure. We hope to see you come back and enthusiastically open our arms to first timers. Thanksgiving Leftover Idea If you like potpies, I have an idea for you. Take your leftover turkey, stuffing, veggies, and potatoes and put them into piecrusts. Add a second crust on top and freeze. Cheaper Kitchen Appliances If you’re looking for a kitchen appliance, consider visiting an appliance repair shop. They often have repaired appliances available for cheap. I just bought a repaired microwave for less than half what a new one would have cost me, and it has all the fancy stuff I wanted but couldn’t afford. I got a 30-day guarantee from the shop. I love my new microwave. Becca Laundry Stains With two sons playing sports and a husband in construction, I’m very familiar with stained clothing. The best stain remover is the cheapest. It’s plain white vinegar. I put a cup of vinegar in a load of laundry and let the load soak overnight. Then I run the load through a normal wash cycle with my regular detergent, and the stains come clean. It’s cheap and easy. Lorie Winter Car Floor Mats If you live up north, you know what ice and snow can do to your car’s carpet and mats. I bought a set of rubber mats for my car. I replace the regular mats before the first snowfall. I can take them out and easily clean them during the winter months. I bought them a bit oversized to protect the carpet. Just make sure that they’re not so big that they interfere with the gas or brake pedals. In the spring, I will do a quick spot cleaning on any stains that escaped my rubber pads and put the regular carpet mats back in place for the summer. William Office Gift Alternative If your office is like mine, most people don’t have money to spend on office gifts. Last year, we decided to try something different. There are 14 of us in the office, so we made up a basket for a homeless family and a basket for a battered women’s shelter. By the time we were through, we added a second basket for each. We didn’t waste money on foolish gifts, and we felt like we were doing something good. We plan on doing the same thing this year. Susie Reduce Your Water Heating Bill We wanted to cut our electric bill. We read that water heaters can run up the bill, so we decided to do something about it. We added a timer. The timer cost $75 and the electrician charged us $125 to install it. Our family all takes their showers in the morning, so we have the timer turn on about 5am and off at 9am. I set

the dishwasher to run at 8:30 if it’s full. It’ll take a couple of months to save the $200 we spent, but I’m sure we’ll save in the long run. Ricky
