residents. The Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition operates the 29,000 square feet facility that sits on seven acres in the city of Plymouth and serves as the center for community events. Executive Director Vicky Schneider said it took 14 years of planning to make Generations a reality. “Construction was completed and the building opened its doors in June of 2011,” she said. “It literally took years of planning and collaboration between city and community leaders, corporate sponsors, a federal grant, and capital campaign.” “Generations was
born out of a grassroots effort to meet two needs including an updated adult community center and a safe, vibrant childcare center,” she explained. “Each organization needed a new space, and rather than create two separate buildings, the thought was to bring generations together, in one place, where relationships could develop, and there would be cost savings with shared resources.” “The goal was and remains to have a welcoming community where people can gather, interact, and develop a sense of belonging in their very own space,” she added.
Aims to serve all Aiming to serve all members of the community, the facility also houses programs and services including the Plymouth Adult Community Center and Meal site, the Family Resource Center of Sheboygan County, Head Start, Growing Generations Child Care, a 4K classroom, the New Life Community Church and Safe Harbor. Pic-A-Deli is an onsite fully operational kitchen that offers healthy lunch options Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. along with an extensive catering menu. The facility is also available for rental purposes. “Pic-A-Deli offers great burgers, wraps, and

Gaining in popularity throughout the country, Generations is just one of a growing number of intergenerational centers serving area communities. “In 2015, the City of Plymouth and Generations was recognized by Generations United as a ‘Best Intergenerational Community’,” Schneider said. Generations staff and volunteers coordinate for residents. “The most challenging thing about Generations is that we have more ideas, more programs, more things that we want to do, than we have resources to fulfill those ideas,” Schneider commented. “We have a great need for more physical space,

Intergenerational programs including educational activities for young and old, computer classes and youngsters playing board games with seniors are just a few of the examples of seniors and young people working together to create lasting relationships and meaningful experiences. “Our mission with the Plymouth Intergenerational Coalition is to maintain and promote opportunities that build and honor relationships between generations through positive social and educational experiences,” Schneider said. The center relies on employees and volunteers to help facilitate the many services and programs offered. “We have 17 staff members including four full-time and 13 part-time. We have approximately 90 regular volunteers and many more group and corporate volunteers,” Schneider said.

How can the Placebo Effect help me?
O
riginating in Latin, the word “placebo” is often translated into English as “I will please.” In healthcare, the word typically refers to any type of “fake” treatment—medicine, manual therapy or surgery—that does not actually alter a person’s health.
in experiments and clinical trials, a growing community of healthcare researchers and clinicians believes it is fundamentally incomplete. This is because it fails to recognize that every placebo treatment DOES have one active ingredient: BELIEF.
A placebo is anything that seems to be a ‘real’ medical treatment—but isn’t. It could be a pill, a shot, or some other type of ‘fake’ treatment. What all placebos have in common is that they do not contain an active substance meant to affect health.
More recent studies on the placebo effect have concentrated on the connections between the mind and body. One very pervasive theory is that a patient’s beliefs— in particular, their expectations—control the placebo effect. In short, if a patient believes that a treatment will do something, then their body’s own chemistry may, in some cases, produce results comparable to what that they believe the treatment will achieve.
Why are placebos used? Researchers use placebos during studies to help them understand what effect a new drug or some other treatment might have on a particular condition. For instance, some people in a study might be given a new drug to lower cholesterol. Others would get a placebo. None of the people in the study will know if they got the real treatment or the placebo. Researchers then compare the effects of the drug and the placebo on the people in the study. That way, they can determine the effectiveness of the new drug and check for side effects. What, then, is “the placebo effect”? Occasionally, a patient will actually respond to a placebo, either positively or negatively. The patient’s symptoms may improve, or the patient may have what seem to be side effects from the treatment. Collectively, these responses are known as the placebo effect. While this description of the placebo effect is great for explaining the basic phenomenon and how it presents
In one study, for example, volunteers were given a placebo and were told it was a stimulant. After taking the pill, the volunteers’ pulse rate sped up, their blood pressure increased, and their reaction speeds improved. When people were given the same pill and told it was to help them get to sleep, they experienced the opposite effects. Experts also say that there is a relationship between how strongly a person expects to have results and whether or not results occur. The stronger the feeling, the more. A research team in Boston recently conducted a study that used migraines and a migraine drug to isolate the placebo effect in a group of 66 patients experiencing successive attacks. The results showed that “There was no difference between the pharmacology of the drug in reducing pain
HEALTH | mind & body and the placebo dressed up with a nice word… Basically we show that words can actually double the effect of a drug. That’s pretty impressive.” This is a very, very important idea. If true, it means that the effectiveness of EVERY TYPE OF TREATMENT depends—at least in part—on the patient’s own attitudes and expectations and how those expectations and attitudes are created and managed by their doctor. This may be especially relevant for ailments that involve the subjective experience of symptoms, including certain types of pain. What’s particularly exciting about this type of research is that the mind-body connection it explores is at the center of many therapies used by practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In this area, today’s medical science may be catching up with traditional medical practice. As we study these CAM therapies using modern techniques, they tend to gain credibility and the healthcare community as a whole bene¿ts from a broader understanding of how the body actually works. We all know people who tend to be constantly negative, tired, and sick. We also all know people who always seem to be smiling. Consider the affect your mind and nervous system has on your bodily functions! Treat your mind well, treat your nervous system well (ahem... Chiropractic!), and see yourself healthy as well!
“You don’t have to be a wreck. You don’t have to be sick. One’s aim in life should be to die in good health. Just like a candle that burns out.” —Jeanne Moreau

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts Walking through my home is like walking through rooms ¿lled with stories. A framed, numbered print of an Eagle hangs above our ¿replace against a green-painted bead board wall, a gift from me to my husband on Father’s Day last year. Stan cut and installed bead board diagonally and painted it our favorite color of green, to match an accent wall in the living room— just because we both love green. An antique Mission-style table with drop-leaf sides and two drawers, belonged to my grandparents. On the table, sits a brass lamp with capiz shell shade that belonged to my mother. A large, very sturdy Mission chair that belonged to my father, sits in front of the window. In the dining room is a large custom-made china cabinet that belonged to my parents. It is ¿lled with china and glassware that belonged to my parents and grandparents and newer pieces that belong to my husband and I. Among all these treasures, and the stories they hold, are always new decorations for every season and holiday. Right now, fall and Halloween decorations are everywhere, including the bathrooms. After Halloween is over, Thanksgiving decorations will appear. The ¿rst of December, fall will quickly leave, to be stored in plastic storage containers, until next year. Within a week after Thanksgiving, Christmas will take over every room of the house. I love trees, so in addition to the large Christmas tree in front of the picture window in the living room, many smaller trees will be displayed throughout the house. Sitting in the living room in front of a crackling ¿re, in the ¿replace, a good book, and a cup of hot tea—suits me to a “T”. Make your house the home you’re always happy to return to.

LYNN SIEVER ROUSSE Charms on Erie After closing the last location of the 23-plus years of the gift shop Surprises!, Charms on Erie was born as an offshoot of the original gift business. Surprises lives on online as an eBay store, but the new storefront in Sheboygan took on a new identity. Parts of the original Surprises store were sold off to make room for a smaller “bricks and mortar” presence. Charms on Erie still handles many of the favorite collectible items that have brought customers through the door of its former parent

When it comes to banquet serving, Millhome has long been known for its ability to accommodate large groups.
Millhome Supper Club also has a fine dining option in its regular dining room, open to customers six days a week. FEATURED RESTAURANT | Millhome Supper Club salad bar features fresh and plentiful ingredients to make your salad the way you like it. And, what’s best, is you can keep coming back for more if you are hungry. Fresh shrimp are on ice for peeling. Whole pickled beets are another delicacy for those who favor beets. In addition, you can also enjoy fresh cut relish vegetables and a few of the usual prepared salad dishes, including three bean and cole slaw. Topping the list of salad bar offerings, though, are the made for scratch soups, which change from day to day. The night of our dining visit caught us fortunate to try the chicken minestrone, chock full of chicken and vegetables. Forget the normal noodle fillers, this soup was full of goodies, and the fine tomato based broth made it a true treat. We loved the flexibility and ability to choose the things we wanted in salads, rather than being forced to indulge in a pre-determined type of salad.

For our entrees, we made the choice of mock lobster (broiled haddock) and the ribeye/broiled shrimp combo. Both entrees offered great taste, as the mock lobster was topped with a breaded lemon pepper flavoring. The 12 oz. ribeye surprised us a bit, as it came in a flatter/thinner form than expected. But topped with an onion ring, it offered great steak flavor. The accompanying shrimp, three pretty good sized shrimp, were broiled in a butter and wine sauce that pleased the palate. It didn’t take long to make the garlic mashed baby red potatoes disappear. They were outstanding. We were also able to order a side order of steamed broccoli to split, a nice touch to add to an already enjoyable meal.

NEW HOLSTEIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Remembering Christmas Past at the Timm House. The New Holstein Historical Society is continuing to celebrate the tenth
anniversary of the restoration of the Timm House. True to the times that the Timm’s lived in the house, the Historical Society is celebrating Christmas as the Timm’s would have. This means that everyone who visits the Timm House Christmas will experience Christmas in true Victorian fashion. The Victorians loved Christmas and all of the special celebrating and decorating that are a part of the holiday. Traditionally, elaborate decorations, many made by the family members themselves, were used on the tree. They included gingerbread men, marzipan candies, hard candies, cookies, fruit, cotton batting Santa figures, paper fans, tin soldiers, whistles, wind-up toys, pine cones, dried fruits, nuts, berries, and trinkets of all kinds. Small handmade gifts, such as tiny hand stitched dolls or children’s mittens and freshly baked treats like sugar cookies and hand-dipped candies were placed carefully on each branch. The children made popcorn, cranberry, and/or paper ring garlands to be added to the tree. A Victorian family’s most prized ornament was the Nuremberg angel atop the tree. It had wings of spun glass, a crinkled gold skirt, and a wax or bisque face. Angles or cherubs represented the Victorian ideal of childlike or womanly innocence. Under the tree would be found the Nativity or a “Putz” village. These homemade villages were the forerunner of our modern-day “Dickens” villages that are so popular today. The table was set with the finest linens, with elaborate table decorations and a center piece especially created for the dinner. The adults would be seated at the dining room table and the children would be seated at a smaller table in the next room. A typical Christmas dinner consisted of boned turkey, stuffed ham, stewed oysters, turnips, mashed potatoes, beets, coleslaw, fried celery, candied sweet potatoes, plum pudding,
baked lemon pudding, cranberry pie, fruit, nuts, and coffee. The New Holstein Historical Society welcomes you to a celebration of Christmas, Victorian Style. The Victorians loved Christmas and all of the special celebrating and decorating that are a part of the holiday. The Timm House has been decorated in that spirit of abundance from evergreen garlands and wreaths on the outside, to the wall and ceiling garlands, bows, ribbons, and trees inside. Make a visit to celebrate Christmas with the Timm’s. Listen to the Christmas carols being played on the original Timm family Steinway Box Grand piano. Join us in “Remembering Christmas Past”. Come see what everyone is talking about. Owners Bob, Connie, Matt & Heidi Moeller purchased the property in 2012. As they researched the history of the property, they were intrigued with the story of a blind horse on the property. Anton and Josephine Dreps originally purchased the land and started a farm in 1862. Generations of the Dreps family carried on this farming tradition. In those days, teams of horses were used to work the land, and Birdy was a lead horse that happened to be blind. The Moellers wanted to honor the family and the story of Birdy, the Drep’s favorite horse, by naming the property The Blind Horse. See our ad on page 17

Cupcakes for Axel ` by Darlene Buechel
A
round the time my grandson Maverick turned 2, my daughter Dani started to notice many moms of toddlers sporting baby
bumps.
“It’s scary,” Dani admitted, “I don’t know if I could love another baby as much as Maverick.” I simply smiled. I was 1,000 percent sure she had plenty of love to go around; I just hoped she’d get the chance to find out for herself. By the time we watched Maverick blow out three candles on his birthday cupcake, Dani had her own baby-inwaiting. Maverick, potty trained and very verbal, was well on his way to becoming a big brother. “I sing to my baby,” Maverick told me. I watched as he lifted up his Mommy’s maternity top, put his face right up to her belly and belted out, “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” I wasn’t sure if Maverick realized how much his life would change with a new baby in the mix, but I had no doubt the little tyke would know big brother’s voice from day one! We all know women who glide through pregnancy and delivery easy as pie. Unfortunately, my daughter isn’t one of them. Preeclampsia (pregnancy induced high blood pressure) and other complications forced Maverick to be delivered via emergency C-section 27 days early. Maverick spent time in the NICU since his lungs were not fully developed. Dani didn’t get to hold him for several days due to her very rocky recovery, and Rick and I didn’t get to cuddle our first grandson until he was finally home from the hospital.
Baby Axel snuggled with big brother Maverick, who was 3 at the time of this photo. This time I prayed for a smooth ride and a baby that could go home the same day as mommy and daddy. I went along to the 20-week ultrasound even though it was decided they did not want to be told the sex of the baby. I threatened to slip the technician a twenty to get the 4-1-1, but in the end I behaved myself and shut my eyes when the tech warned us to look away. A due date of 9-11-13 was determined and a C-section was scheduled for Sept. 5 (39 weeks). That day just happens to be Rick’s birthday so grandpa was looking forward to having a birthday twin. Of course, that was not meant to be. All was well with mom and unborn babe until high blood pressure set in at the end of July. Dani made several extra trips to the doctor, but thankfully when her blood pressure spiked it always came back down. Still, it was determined a Sept. 5 delivery would be too risky. The new plan was bed rest and
a C-section at 37 weeks—the point where a baby is considered full-term. Some folks may think a month off work to lie around, watch Honey Boo Boo and read a stack of novels would be heaven; those people are probably not the mother of an athletic, energetic 3-year-old. Maverick’s daddy spent extra time with him, but I could see it ate away at Dani that she couldn’t do all the hands-on playing she used to do with her toddler. Bed rest was frustrating, but Dani knew that each day the baby spent in utero was one less day in the NICU. Maverick went to daycare every day and talked to Dani’s tummy each night. When Dani commented the baby was kicking hard or had the hiccups, Maverick would say, “It’s OK, baby, big brother is here.” It was Maverick’s idea to make treats the night before the big event. “It will be my baby’s birthday. We need cupcakes!” he said. When Mommy explained that baby would have no teeth and couldn’t eat sweets, my grandson didn’t skip a beat. “That HOLIDAY 2017 |

means more for Maverick!” he grinned.
said. “Tiny, but no NICU this time.”
Maverick decorated the confetti cupcakes with pink frosting and sprinkles. I’m not sure if he was thinking “baby sister” or just celebrating Mommy’s favorite color. He was happy and proud to deliver his colorful goodies to daycare on baby day.
Hooray! At that point I didn’t care I’d have to wait to find out if I’d be buying pink or blue, I was thrilled Maverick would get to hold “his baby” right away and grandpa and I would be right in line.
Since the C-section wasn’t scheduled until noon, the plan was for this grandma to work until 4 p.m. as usual on Aug. 21, then pick up Maverick from daycare. Grandpa and I would take big brother to see the baby after Rick got done in the barn. My son-inlaw Mark said he’d call when they were out of recovery, but would only give the weight and length details— we’d have to wait to hear the boy or girl information when we got up to Theda Clark. I tried to concentrate at work, but every time the phone rang between noon and 2 p.m. my heart somersaulted from my chest to my throat. Finally, a little after 2 p.m., Dani’s cell phone number showed up on caller I.D. “Baby is 19-1/2 inches long and 5 pounds, 14 ounces,” she

That night when we finally got up to the hospital, I was excited to see a basinet right there in the room. Dani smiled from her hospital bed. “Go meet the baby,” she said. We walked over and gazed into the basinet of tiny Axel Thomas. What a sweet little guy! All the waiting and worry vanished into the air as I sat down to hold our family’s precious little miracle. After Axel made the rounds from grandma’s arms to grandpa’s to big brother Maverick, he was snuggled back with Mommy again. Remember when Dani wondered if she’d ever love a new baby as much as her firstborn? One look at her and Axel together and the question was answered 100 fold. As she cuddled with both her boys in the hospital bed, there was not a hint of post-op pain in the air, just pure joy.
Shortly before his sibling was born I asked Maverick what he planned on teaching the new baby. “I will show my baby baseball, and football, and golf. He can play with my toys but if he won’t share he goes in timeout!” Maverick said. I had to laugh at that, but as I watched Maverick talk and sing to his new baby brother I knew he would have a
forever friend. These days my grandsons, ages 7 and 4, are best buds—sometimes. Maverick has taught Axel a lot about sports, and Axel has taught his big brother about tools and acting goofy. I hope as they muddle through grade school, teen years, and adulthood they stay friends every step of the way. As the years go on they may share a beer instead of cupcakes, but they’ll always have each other. I ran across a quote the other day (author unknown) that sums it up perfectly. “A brother shares childhood memories and grown-up dreams.” I’d toast that with a cupcake any day.

admit when I first learned of the baby-in-waiting, part of me hoped for a little girl. I could stock up on pink and purple frilly clothes and wile away some grandma hours playing Barbies instead of baseball. Still, the moment I saw Maverick hold his new baby brother he seemed the perfect addition to their family.
