hen Connie Loewe received the call on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2009, she knew it would be tough. What she didn’t know was how a rescue mission would turn into a lifelong friendship. Loewe, a first responder from Stockbridge, had just returned to land after participating in the sturgeon-spearing season on Lake Winnebago, when her pager went off at approximately 11:30 a.m. “When I arrived at the scene in Quinney Theda Star had just landed,” Loewe said. “Two flight nurses and I

jumped into a pick up truck which took us to the scene.” The scene was on Lake Winnebago in Calumet County between the Quinney Road boat landing and Ecker Lakeland Drive where a truck with three occupants had broken through the ice. Dan Kleinhans along with his 9-year-old daughter Savannah, and Savannah’s 7-year-old friend Tiffany Dombrowski, were about a half mile south of Quinney and about a half mile off shore when their vehicle hit a large crack and quickly sank.
The girls were in the water approximately 20 to 30 minutes before they were pulled out of the water by Stockbridge Fire Department firefighters who used long polls to reach in the back window of the truck, hook onto the girls, and pull them out. The fire department continued to search for additional occupants while they waited for the Fond du Lac dive team to arrive. “When I arrived they had just pulled Savannah out and were working on her. They took her to shore,” Loewe said. “Then they were able to get Tiffany out.”
First Responder Tim Hemauer along with an area fisherman immediately began CPR on Tiffany. Loewe along with the flight nurses, continued to work on Tiffany in the back of a van while being driven to shore. Tiffany was then loaded onto the Theda Star helicopter and flown to Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah.

“I went back out on the lake and after about an hour or so they were able to pull Dan out,” Loewe said. “The Fond du Lac dive team put him in the back of a pick up truck and we did CPR all the way to the shore.” Tragically, both Dan and Savannah could not be saved and both lost their lives that day. After medical personnel at Theda Clark stabilized Tiffany, she was flown to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee where she would remain for the next five weeks. Loewe went home and thought about the lives lost and the little girl who was fighting for her life. “About a day or two after the accident, I called Children’s Hospital and was able to speak to Tiffany’s dad who told her they had set up a Caring Bridge web page for those wishing to keep up to date on Tiffany’s progress. “Every day they would put updates on the web page and I talked to the parents a few times,” Loewe said. “About a month later when Tiffany was able to go home, I asked if I could stop in and meet her. I brought her a yellow dress and a crown and we took photos.” Tiffany still remembers Loewe’s first visit and the princess dress and crown that she gave to her.
Tiffany and Connie pose on the shore of Lake Winnebago just south of where the 2009 accident occurred.
On June 22 of that year, those who had participated in rescuing Tiffany gathered and had a party at the Stockbridge Fire Station. “We celebrated with Tiffany and her family,” Loewe said of the little girl that was and remains so embedded in her mind and heart.
Valentine’s Day and how things might have turned out differently if only they could have had the right equipment readily available. “If we could have been there right away and went down,” she said. “Both girls were under for 30 minutes. If we could have gotten them out right away, they might have all lived.”
Loewe along with fellow emergency personnel continued to think about what had happened on the lake that

training officially began thanks in part to the instrumental efforts of Stockbridge Fire Chief Mike Funk, and also to Joe Nelesen of Chilton who donated $7,000 to help get the initiative started. Tiffany was made an honorary member of the Calumet County Dive Team in 2013 after completing her first open water dive.

overnight visit during the holidays in 2010.” Each Valentine’s Day is special to Loewe and a reason to celebrate. “Tiffany and I always spend that day together. I call it her second birthday,” she said. “We have a celebration with balloons and cake.”
A yearly golf outing at Hickory Hills each year continues to be one of the biggest fundraisers for SPIFF. “This year they raised $9,000 for the dive team,” Loewe said.
At the age of 10, inspired by the work she saw being done by Loewe and others, Tiffany decided she wanted to participate and learn about diving. “I wanted to learn how to dive so I can be on a dive team someday so I can help people like Connie does,” Tiffany explained.

Also instrumental in aiding the dive team with the funds necessary to continue is Dave Van Elzen who organizes workers for the Eve of Destruction in Kaukauna each year. According to Loewe, volunteers work at the event parking cars and helping to run the 50-50 raffle. “Last year we received $4,500,” Loewe said. Loewe along with 12 firefighters completed the extensive training. Loewe has reached the level of dive master and assistant scuba instructor. “Today we have 12 fully trained divers, all members of Calumet County area fire departments, and we also have a lot of people on the dive team that aren’t divers but assist with trucks and equipment, ropes, etc.,” she said. The Calumet County Dive Team serves all of Calumet County in addition to serving as the back up dive team for Sheboygan County. To date, the dive team has assisted in about half a dozen or more calls in the High Cliff, Hilbert, and Sheboygan areas. Loewe also continued to keep in touch with Tiffany through frequent phone calls and visits. “At Christmas time, I asked if I could spend a few days with her. She came for her first

In July of 2012, Tiffany’s journey to become a diver began with the help of Green Bay Scuba and with Loewe at her side. On Sept. 15, 2013 Tiffany took her first open water dive. “It was pretty scary, but she was not afraid at all,” Loewe said. “She loves the water and is a good swimmer, but she was nervous.” “It was very emotional,” Loewe admits, “I was amazed that someone who almost lost her life would want to do that.” Shortly after her first open dive, Tiffany was presented with a plaque making her an honorary member of the Calumet County Dive Team. “Tiffany does have
cognitive issues that remain after the 2009 accident and tends to forget,” Loewe said. “Tiffany will always have a brain injury and need some sort of assistance. She is not certified yet, but she is working on it,” Loewe explained, adding she continues to practice periodically with Tiffany. Tiffany and Loewe get together several times a year and enjoy going to movies, shopping, going out for dinner and other adventures, and even taking a recent trip to Disney World in Florida. “We have so much fun. She is my little miracle,” Loewe said. “Tiffany is just as happy sitting and watching movies and talking as she is going

strong women | Friendship grows on little adventures,” Loewe said, who added she likes to bake with Tiffany and do little projects. “We take little trips to Bay Beach, area water parks, the NEW Zoo, stuff like that. It’s different every time.” Tiffany enjoys being a part of Loewe’s family and fits right in with Loewe’s grandchildren. “She loves doing all sorts of things with the kids,” Loewe said. “She gets along with all of them. She is part of the family.” “My favorite thing about Connie is when she makes me breakfast in the morning,” Tiffany shared.
Loewe said the accident that occurred on Valentine’s Day in 2009 has had a lasting effect not only on her, but also on many others while also helping to spark the creation of the Calumet County Dive Team and Savannah’s Pay It Forward Foundation. “I’ve met so many neat people,” she said. “Out of all bad things there is always good that comes out of it too.”
More information on Savannah’s Pay It Forward Foundation can be found at www.spiffonline.org.
One of those good things is the special relationship that has grown between a little girl and the woman who helped to save her. “I totally love her,” Loewe said.
Now 15, Loewe said she still gets emotional when she thinks of Tiffany. “It feels like she should be mine. She’s so special.”
“Connie means the world to me,” Tiffany said. “She is funny and we have a lot of fun together.”
“She had no pulse, no heart beat. To be able to help save a person, it makes everything that we’ve done and worked for worthwhile,” Loewe said.

About a decade ago Lehmann found herself at a crossroads. In 2005 she left a good career in Madison to move to Sheboygan with her husband. She had worked her way up from being a part-time weekend radio announcer to becoming a regional marketing manager for a large TV advertising company. With her move to Sheboygan she said she had lost her identity as she had defined herself by her career. Lehmann had done a little photography work and considered trying to start a new career in that field. Then one day one of those “signs from the universe” told her she was making the right decision.

LIFE|Great Lakes beauty “One day, I was walking along the shore of Lake Michigan when I noticed what looked like a pack of dogs way down the beach,” she said. “It took a moment for me to comprehend what I was seeing and then it hit me—it’s a herd of deer. There were six or seven and they were running in the shallow water. “The wind must have been blowing my way because they kept coming as I crouched down behind a sand dune. I had the presence of mind to quickly adjust my camera for the morning light and set a fast shutter speed. I got down on all fours and crawled as close to the ground as I could, ducking behind a dune.... Occasionally I could get a glimpse of (the deer) still coming at me, and when I thought the moment

was right, I popped up and clicked the shutter. They were right in front of me. It wasn’t but one second later that they took off and scattered. “I knew I had something awesome, so with a big grin on my face I turned and ran home to download the images. The photo was as unique as I had hoped. The deer were silhouetted against the bright morning sky. One was looking directly at me, but in the next shot they were gone. I only had one chance and I got it. I took this as a sign that I was on the right track with my decision to start a new career.” That deer photo which has so much meaning to Lehmann can be found in the book “Lake Michigan: The Wisconsin Shore” which was recognized as a 2015 National Indie Excellence Award Finalist in the category of photography. —John Dankwardt features nine local photographers and over 100 photos in a collection that represents the lake in all its glory, in every season, from the Kenosha Sand Dunes to the Sheboygan lighthouse to the Door Peninsula. Especially interesting are images of the ever-changing ice formations along the shore in winter, something most people never see. “One day there are delicate floating ice plates, tinkling in the gentle waves,” Lehmann said. “The next day, everything is smashed up and wiped clean by the powerful surf, leaving smooth mirror-like patches in frozen sand. The shore keeps changing with fluctuations in temperature and wind.” The book is dedicated to the lake that Lehmann fell in love with upon moving to Sheboygan in 2005. As a

LIFE|Great Lakes beauty child growing up in Plymouth, her family visited the lake once or twice a year for a picnic or fishing trip. “When I was little, I’m not sure that I even knew where we were going,” she said. “After leaving Sheboygan County for college and then moving back as an adult, I was just taken by the everyday outstanding awesomeness of this lake. The colors, the sound, the power, the sky—it is a local treasure. I think it gets taken for granted, so the photographs in the book provide a way for people to experience what it’s like all year long.” In fact, the book was used to illustrate the natural beauty of the region when a local hospital sent it to woo a doctor from another area of the country. It has also been sent to the mayor of Esslingen, Germany, Sheboygan’s sister city. The other photographers featured

More information about the NIEA award can be found at www.indieexcellence.com/ indie-results-2015-finalists.htmft87. Lehmann said she first considered a career in photography as people complimented the photos in her office. She had some experience taking photos for her side business designing Web sites, but she had never done portrait photography. She spent the next few years taking classes and creating her business, Lehmann Photo Art.
Desperate for help, she reached out to other local photographers. A few were very nice, letting her use their studio or taking her along on shoots. One in particular changed her life. This woman shared her techniques and business practices, like how to price work, how she took stunning portraits, which lab to use, etc. As a very competitive person, Lehmann could hardly believe this generosity and said she was stunned by the realization that giving back was more fulfilling than holding back. Lehmann took on any project to earn money, including photography, graphic design, Web site creation, marketing, and consulting. Another businesswoman gave her a big break into the art world when she let Lehmann show and sell photography in her store. It took a few years to develop

After working in the male-dominated fields of radio and TV, she found her identity by connecting with women. Lehmann is involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, volunteering for after-school programs for girls, mentoring young women in photography, taking portraits of moms and kids at women’s shelters, Women in Management, and sharing her knowledge through teaching. The skills Lehmann learned during her career and as a photographer led her to her greatest accomplishment, something she never thought she could do in her wildest dreams—the creation of “Lake Michigan: The Wisconsin Shore.” She had gotten the idea for the book after helping out a store on Sheboygan’s Riverfront and realized there were no souvenirs that showcased the beautiful Wisconsin shore of the big lake. cappella singing, or singing without musical accompaniment, seems to be all the rage these days—especially in colleges and, in the last few years, two movies. “Pitch Perfect” and then “Pitch Perfect 2” brought laughs and great harmonic sounds to the masses. In fact, “Pitch Perfect 2” even brought select Green Bay Packers into the a cappella fold featuring Clay Matthews, David Bakhtiari, Josh Sitton, T. J. Lang and Don Barclay; however, what many do not realize is that the Sheboygan/ Plymouth/Fond du Lac area has its own place for women who love to sing a cappella. One of the area’s unique cultural offerings is its women’s barbershop chorus, aptly named Sound Celebration. It is a chorus composed of

women from a variety of backgrounds. Most members are not formally trained musicians or vocalists, but each possesses a love of music and a passion for singing. They are ordinary

women, making extraordinary music. Coming from the three cities they gather every week for 2-1/4 hours to learn about barbershop style and to sing four-part a cappella harmony. The 27 chorus members are, for
“We perform anywhere we are asked,” said longtime member Marianne Cooke, the group’s president. “We rehearse once a week throughout the year—there’s no summer or winter break, just an occasional nonrehearsal Tuesday around the Fourth of July or Christmas. There’s a Chorus Christmas Celebration, a summer picnic and a retreat every other spring for fun and to build camaraderie. The retreat offers opportunities for musical and performance coaching from experts in the field.”
LIFE | Voices of harmony “Performance” is a key word here. The chorus does not give “concerts” as most choirs and chorales do, but it gives to the community a yearly October “show” performing in a vaudevillian style that puts smiles on the faces of young and old alike. Held for the last several years at the Plymouth Performing Arts Center, the show is always themed for fun and laughter. The 2016 performance, its 50th, was a “Trail Blazin’ Harmony” performance of jokes and one-liners about cowboys, boot hill, Annie Oakley, Wild Bill Hickok, horses, undertakers and the funny and unusual town folk of a mythical “Wild West” town.
a cappella singing in the barbershop style. Chartered with Harmony Inc. since 1967, its membership has since ebbed and flowed, but for 50 years the ladies have continued to “ring those barbershop chords.” Competing regionally in the Midwest area since 1968, the chorus also competes internationally throughout the U.S. and Canada including Nova Scotia, Windsor, Orlando, St. Louis and this November in Providence, Rhode Island. In the spring regional competition of 2016, Sound Celebration placed second in the Gold Division which qualified the chorus to compete nationally in November against the best women’s barbershop choruses throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Director Janice Westphal
Previous years have featured other fun themes including “The County Fair,” “Southern Belles,” “New York City,” “Pirates,” “Rock & Roll,” and “The Circus,” each providing a bedrock of jokes and songs that left the audiences wanting more. Although their “Big Show” is designed as a fund raising event featuring a cash raffle, a free-will offering and a basket raffle to support the group’s competitive activities, the shows are free and open to the public.
Personal fulfillment “I have been a singer my whole life, but have never had to work so hard to have so much fun,” said Kerry Wilson of Plymouth. “The harmony this chorus produces is personally fulfilling in ways no other musical style has provided for me. The chorus is tight in its personal relationships and in the music
President Marianne Cooke it produces. Our members work hard and remain committed to this group because they get payback from the chorus—joy from a cappella singing that cannot be found anywhere else and friendships that are as tight as the harmony they create.” Sound Celebration is a member of the international women’s singing organization Harmony, Inc., whose purpose is to empower all women through education, friendship, and
Its current director, Janice Westphal, formerly of Sheboygan and currently of Fond du Lac, has had the pleasure of directing the group for the last 25 years. A retired choral and mathematics teacher from Sheboygan Falls High School and named Teacher of the Year in the Sheboygan Falls District in 2003, Westphal is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has been involved in the Sheboygan Theater Company, the Plymouth Performing Arts Center, and Memories Theatre in Port Washington. She started singing with Sound Celebration in 1989 and has been its director since 1990. Spirited and dynamic, she is constantly learning and directs the chorus every week with a love for barbershop

LIFE | Voices of harmony music that inspires each member and brings passion, enthusiasm, and humor to every rehearsal. Her teaching experience drives her to do more than direct. Janice teaches and inspires her diverse membership to feel the music as they perform it. She said she believes that singing is more than mere notes and words, but also is the feeling conveyed through expression, tone, vowel sounds, pitch, volume, body movement, proper breathing, and the placement of each person’s unique voice as they stand in chorus position. Her expressive face and hands work magic as she merges 27 voices into one harmonic sound that brings “overtones” or a blend of harmonic pitches ringing through the rafters.
Career in music “I have always known that I would be an educator and a musician,” Westphal said. “After a career of teaching music to high school students, I am able to continue teaching music as a director, vocal coach, singing teacher, musical theatre director and performer. Music is my passion and I love sharing my passion with Sound Celebration members.” Friendship is a critical ingredient of the group’s success. The chorus was founded in 1965 by two women friends who liked to sing and decided to form a women’s barbershop singing group. The enthusiastic comrades immediately went home and called all their

singing buddies. Their first rehearsal was held in a living room. The chorus’ six charter members knew they had to have four different voice parts in order to sing barbershop harmony and were delighted to discover that their respective voices ran the gamut of tenor, lead, baritone and bass. They rehearsed once a week and before long became a membership of 12. The small chorus soon outgrew its living room space and found a home in a local church hall. They established membership dues so they could purchase music and pay a director. After a few weeks of rehearsal, the subject of naming the group came up, and they decided on The Chord-a-lettes, a classic 1960s title. The move to a church hall proved to be a strategic one for the young chorus as one of the church ladies listened in on a rehearsal and afterward asked if they would like to sing for her church organization. They jumped at the opportunity and the word was out. Before long they were singing at community functions everywhere within driving distance.
Name changed In 1992 the group changed the chorus name to Sound Celebration and asked the renowned barbershop composer Tom Gentry to write a theme song for the group. The result was the upbeat and jubilant “Sound Celebration”
theme song that is sung now at each of their performances. Gentry said, “I wrote and arranged this energetic song honoring music and other sounds of life around us.” It is a song that is loved and sung often among both male and female barbershop choruses throughout Canada and the U.S. but for Sound Celebration, well, they are delighted to share “their song” with other choruses, but they know it was written for them and it technically “belongs” to them. In an effort to grow, the chorus arranges “Find Your Voice” rehearsals the first two Tuesdays of January inviting women who might be interested in singing with
them to attend a rehearsal, get to know fellow singers and generally find out what singing a cappella harmony in a barbershop chorus is all about. The guests dance with the group taking part in the group’s physical and voice warm-up exercises, learn about four-part singing style and what it takes to get the most out of membership. It can be a life-changing hobby that helps women not only discover their own voices, but themselves as well. Denise Shaffer of Oakfield has been a member for four years. “I heard Sound Celebration sing for my Fond du Lac Noon Kiwanis Club’s Christmas party,” she said. “They looked stunning in red jackets, black blouses

Inspired with our desire to grow and flourish; Nourished by our devotion to our music; Constructive in our work for Harmony, Inc. At every rehearsal the rest of the world falls away and there is only
music, the moment, and the “right now”—and the time flies as Sound Celebration sings, indeed creating harmony with their voices that comes from their hearts. For more information about Sound Celebration visit www.soundcelebration.com.
The songs the chorus sings are of all genres, from classic to contemporary and from ballads to lively up-tunes. Their repertoire is large and varied. Besides the show the group produces each October, it also tailors programs to fit requests including patriotic, weddings, valentines—you pick the event, they will have a song that suits the occasion. One of their fun fund-raisers happens every Christmas when they send Singing Christmas Cards. Individuals can pay a minimal charge ($10) and on a specified Tuesday night, the group will call a selected friend, colleague or loved one, and sing two Christmas carols for them. “It’s a unique Christmas gift,” Cooke said, “and it’s especially good for folks for whom it is hard to buy a present. It’s personal, it’s charming and it’s fun, and it’s so easy.” The ladies of the chorus live by the Harmony Inc. principles and in fact close each rehearsal with a song chosen by a member, and repeating together the “Harmony Creed”: Harmony from our hearts as well as voices; Affection for each other, oft expressed; Radiant with our love of barbershop; Mindful of our principles and ideals; Outstretched hands to every race and creed; Neatness in our dress and in our thinking; Young at Heart, for singing keeps us young; holiday 2016 |

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts Growing up in a family that included three adult women meant that making Christmas cookies was a big event. My grandma and an aunt lived with us. At the time I felt very fortunate to have all this attention.
table and chairs are now settled into my garage while I make the difcult decision of what to do with this treasured piece of furniture. What I am happy about is that maybe I am what my husband refers to as a “pack rat,” if I weren’t, I wouldn’t have kept that table all these years, and it wouldn’t now be a part of our family history.
I didn’t realize the amount of history that followed this simple act of making molasses cookies. My grandma didn’t have much when she moved in with my mother and dad, but the few pieces of furniture she had, included a solid wood table and chairs. Eventually my parents downsized and when I left home to move into my rst apartment, the table and chairs went with me. That table moved with me to two apartments and then to my rst home when I got married.
Hopefully making the following gingerbread cookies can become one of your family traditions during this holiday season.
The table continued to move with us over the years to ve different houses. While in our fth home, Mark, our oldest child, left home to go to college in Minnesota. The table and chairs went with him. He took it with him to a second apartment and then to the rst house he bought when he got married. While living in his rst house, Mark gave me a call one weekend to tell me he was rolling out dough and cutting out molasses cookies on my table. I couldn’t help but get goose bumps when I realized that he was the fourth generation to make cookies on the table that my grandma used to make the same cookies, over 70 years ago.

Do you have osteoarthritis of the neck?
A
ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), arthritis affects an estimated 50 million Americans. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, in which the cartilage surrounding joints becomes brittle and wears away, causing the tendons and ligaments supporting them to become stretched and painful. Eventually, the bones may even rub directly against each other, triggering even more pain. The result is that the arthritis sufferer loses mobility in the affected joints, and may develop chronic pain whenever they use them. The joints most commonly affected by osteoarthritis are the knees and two areas of the spine – the lower back (lumbar spine) and the neck (cervical spine). Medical treatments for cervical or neck arthritis—the form of osteoarthritis we are focusing on in this article—are primarily pharmacological, using NSAIDs (non-steroidal antiinammatory drugs
such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, and naproxen) to reduce swelling and treat minor pain, codeine to treat more serious pain, and muscle relaxants. More serious cases are sometimes treated with amitriptyline, which reduces nerve pain in some cases, but which also has undesirable and uncomfortable side effects.
Neck arthritis has been treated by chiropractors for many years with a great deal of success. While much of the clinical evidence has been anecdotal, a study published in the February 2014 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics validates the use of spinal adjustments to manage the pain of neck arthritis and improve function. The study is a retrospective case review of older patients who were diagnosed with cervical arthritis and treated in a multidisciplinary clinic that provided both chiropractic and orthopedic services. All patients were thus treated by a chiropractor with a combination of upper cervical manipulation and mechanical mobilization device therapy. Their progress was measured by physical examination and X-rays, and their pain levels were determined by self-assessment, using a numeric pain scale (NPS). The patients’ perceptions of their pain levels before spinal manipulation averaged 8.6 on the NPS, with a range of 7 to 10. After manipulation, the average NPS rating was 2.6, with a range of 0 to 7. However, the patients’ improvement wasn’t limited to their subjective
HEALTH | mind & body assessment of pain relief (though this is important, of course). They also experienced substantial improvement in mobility. The patients’ ability to freely rotate their C1-C2 vertebrae increased from an average of 28 degrees at the start of the study to an average of 52 degrees. Clinical improvements in pain were seen in 80 percent of patients, and clinical improvements in range of motion were seen in 90 percent of patients. The researchers therefore concluded that chiropractic treatment of neck arthritis was denitely effective, and provided both physical and psychological benets to the patients in the study. These ndings conrm that chiropractic care can provide safe, effective, drug-free relief to older adults suffering from neck arthritis. The ndings supplement earlier research that has found that chiropractic adjustments can reduce arthritis symptoms in the knees, hips, and hands.

Not only will you feel better...you will function better through an increased range of motion. I’ve had patients tell me it’s the little things, like looking over your shoulder while driving, where they really notice the difference in their day-to-day lives.

Kathy Horneck Crafter’s Studio
Crafter’s Studio opened its doors in October 2006 in Kiel. In 2014 an opportunity presented itself to owner Kathy Horneck to move in with Floral Studio 1796 in New Holstein. The studio sells supplies for card making and scrapbooking projects which includes stamps, papers, card stock, dies, inks, stickers, adhesives, and various other embellishments. It also carries some items for
Horneck originally started the business with partner Janie Siehs, who was co-owner. “Both of us had an interest in crafting and wanted to continue to learn more and share with others,” Horneck said. Siehs left the business in September 2014.
Kathy Horneck Crafter’s Studio mixed media projects. The studio holds a monthly card class to learn different techniques, with Horneck often bringing in other instructors for those classes. Classes can be found on the Web site, Facebook or through e-mails. Contact the studio to reserve a spot for a class. Horneck said, “Currently we also have Make N Takes where you make a card for $1. These are held the third Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each month. Six to eight sample cards are available to choose from with supplies provided. You can make as many as you want and don’t need to
Asked about where she sees her business headed, Horneck said, “Over the past several years I have seen a shift from scrapbookers to card makers. Today many photos are taken with phones and cameras but I’m not sure how many of these photos are actually printed for traditional hand-made scrapbooks. Some people have converted to digital scrapbooking; however, I intend to keep supplies for people who still like the touch and feel of supplies for their projects. “There has been a trend for do-it-yourself and mixed media projects with the inception of Pinterest and do-it-yourself programming on TV,” she added. “My competition for supplies is mostly online; however, I don’t intend
Crafter’s Studio to become an online business. That would require large inventory and expense of dependable, up-to-date technology for ordering, payment, shipping and closer inventory control needs. “I enjoy providing the environment for customers to physically come in to shop, get and share ideas and purchase supplies. The studio is also an avenue for customers to get together, socialize, and share their ideas while attending classes.” Horneck said she gets good feedback from customers. “Scrapbookers mention I have unique papers not found at other stores. They feel the studio has a friendly atmosphere where they can get help versus a big box store. Also that I carry a good variety of dies. Customers are also appreciative that I do honor competitors’ coupons.” Crafter’s Studio has a customer purchase program where with every seventh purchase the customer receives 25 percent off their entire purchase. Horneck also is introducing a customer referral program

Ellenbecker Bleating Heart Haven
Bleating Heart Haven Farm and Fiber Arts got its start in Arpin, Wisconsin in 1988 when Cindy Ellenbecker learned to spin on her antique spinning wheel and bought some fiber animals—Angora goats and Jacob sheep—so she could have a ready source of fiber.

In 2007 I moved into a bigger space on the farm and in 2014 I renovated an old machine shed and now have a serious-sized shop.” Bleating Heart Haven sells raw, skirted fleeces and roving from five breeds of sheep and Angora goats (product is mohair from Angora goats), and Angora bunnies for the hand spinners, fiber artists, and crafters. Ellenbecker also sells yarn exclusively from her animals, both natural colored and hand-dyed. Lackershire Hair’s to You
Hair’s To You is a friendly, full-service, family-oriented haircare salon, according to owner Sheila Lackershire. “I have been in the business 31 years and owned Hair’s To You for 23 years,” she said. Lackershire has two full-time employees. Ashley Hausler has been in the profession for 15 years and with Hair’s To You for 12 years. Andrea Mueller has been in the profession for 11 years and with Hair’s To You for two years. Hair’s To You carries Aveda haircare and color products along with ISO products, Nioxon and American Crew. Services include coloring, perming, haircutting, waxing, manicures, and pedicures. Appointments for consulations are always welcome at no charge. “We feel it’s important to take the time with a client looking for ‘a new look’ and to discuss what service is needed for them,” Lackershire said.
New Holstein She reflected on her years of owning the business, saying, “I will never forget the day my husband Al said to me, ‘I think I found the perfect place for you to open your salon.’ We drove up to this little old house and I thought, ‘You have to be kidding.’ We went forward and laid out the plans, gutted the place out and created Hair’s To You. The experience really opened my eyes to keeping an open mind and the possibilities of taking something old and creating something new. I love it.” Lackershire said she simply plans to continue doing what they have been doing—taking excellent care of clients and welcoming new clients. “We may not be a big salon but we do big stuff,” she said. Melissa Schneider Maid Perfect LLC
Maid Perfect is a cleaning service for residential, rental properties, commercial, real estate, new construction and remodel customers. Owner Melissa Schneider said, “I have been in business since 2009 but my cleaning talents have started way before I started my business. I started cleaning for a few families while working a full-time job before I decided to started out on my own. As a young girl with chores to accomplish before I was able to spend time with friends I learned the trade at a very young age to appreciate an organized and clean home or space. With the drive of my mother who taught me my skills and the support of both my parents to start my own business, I am forever grateful.” Schneider added, “Each job is specific to their cleaning needs. Not everyone needs a full service, some may only need help with scrubbing of floors whereas others appreciate a full service of

I meet with potential clients and walk through the home or office taking notes of your cleaning requirements. I give them an estimate of how long it will take and we decide together how to proceed and schedule. “We come with our own equipment and supplies that are natural or environmentally safe— from Nature’s Sunshine Concentrate infused with essential oils, Norwex products, Watkins and Meyers—and some of the basics such as bleach, vinegar and baking soda.” Maid Perfect has a staff of seven people whom Schneider said she has known for a good part of her life. Her business is insured and bonded. As the owner of Maid Perfect, Schneider said she is “a single parent striving to provide a good home that needs the flexibility to care for my daughter. I wanted to be able to get her off to
“Every year brings me growth in my business,” she added. “I would like to strive to have a few more employees to accommodate all of the requests, which I am working on.” She said she would like to be able to serve clients in other areas of Wisconsin and even other states. “With my extended families located in different parts of the U.S., I get asked that a lot,” she said. Customers appreciate the luxury of coming home to a clean house after a long work day and being able to devote their time to family and friends. “As a few renters to rental properties have said, ‘Your place is just perfect!,’” Schneider said.

Floral Studio 1796 LLC Floral Studio 1796 is a full-service flower shop that is honored to be there for all the big and small events in peoples’ lives, owner Kerri Brantmeier said. “We do flowers for weddings, funerals, baby and wedding showers, parties, thinking of you, get well, holidays, etc.,” she said. “We also have unique gift items such as Zand skirts, Mixture candles, hand-painted wine glasses,
essential oils, and Lip Sense lipstick.” Brantmeier has owned the business since 2011 when she purchased Country Floral from Mary Jaschob, who started her floral business in New Holstein in 1979. The newest addition at Floral Studio 1796 is Carrie Strobl. The Green Bay-area resident has been an event florist for a number of years.
Kerri Brantmeier Floral Studio 1796 “We enjoy working together to provide the best service and selection that we can,” Brantmeier said of Strobl. “We take the time to make sure we can bring our clients’ ideas to life. Carrie and I like to think of our work as big-city style with hometown charm.” She added, “We would like to continue to serve our existing community while expanding our wedding services to larger markets. We are more than happy to travel for our brides, frequently doing weddings in a 45-minute radius from the shop.” Brantmeier said firstholiday 2016 |

Communities time customers often seem surprised by the variety Floral Studio 1796 has to offer. “We also often hear how long our fresh arrangements last,” she added. “We work really hard to keep our stock as fresh as possible, occasionally offering $1/stem cash and carry sales to make room for our new shipments if we had a slow week or if I just had to have everything I saw on the flower truck.”
Julia Bushman -Mayer Julia’s Furniture, Flooring, Framing, & Custom Window Treatments
The location has been a furniture store since 1903. Julia Bushman-Mayer is the sixth owner, having owned it since June 1999. Traditionally the site has sold furniture and flooring but Julia has added custom picture framing and window treatments to provide a complete home decorating experience. “We help you with your style and you leave with a smile,” she said. She added, “I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, colors, and styles by going to a minimum of four markets per year to see what is new and happening, and, by doing so, keeping a diverse selection to provide a unique experience for varied customers who range from local to 100 miles away.

“Ann does the custom framework and has been doing that type of work for 30-plus years. With an eye for detail, she does an above-and-beyond job on such things as Packer jerseys or any favorite team items, along with doing memorabilia shadowboxes to preserve those exceptional memories. And don’t forget those special photos, needlework, wedding invites, and puzzles, signed and numbered prints, and any unique items. All work is done museum quality. Custom framing help is available during all store hours with no appointment necessary.” Julia said, “Paula brings her extensive background in customer service to the store to help patrons make decisions on products they want for their homes. She spends time with the customers getting to know them, asking pertinent questions to make sure they get what best serves each individual’s needs and wants.” As Julia’s Furniture, Flooring, Framing, & Custom Window Treatments continues to add to the long business history at that location, Julia said they will “continue our excellent service to the area and provide a unique selection of goods that could be found by only going to a larger city, like our current modern glass dining room tables and chairs. Window treatments have been our newest addition, and it has been exciting. Graber is a strong brand. But if they don’t have what our customer needs
New Holstein or wants, we can easily accommodate them with a custom solution.” She added, “Customers from the Valley say how successful the store would be there. I always state that it is the location that helps keep my prices reasonable. Also, the floor installer who installs our flooring does amazing work and has a strong reputation for excellence in the area.” “Sometimes customers are intimidated to walk into a store, afraid of highpressure sales. That is not the case at Julia’s Furniture. Ollie, our shelter rescue, greets people at the door with a wagging tail. We ask people what they need and based on their responses
provide the service that fits. Plus, our low overhead allows us to focus on what our customers need. That low overhead also comes across in savings. We can compete with the big box stores and provide a quality product. Also, we have free delivery and at-no-charge custom measuring for floors and window treatments. Let our location be your savings.”

“My business mostly consists of haircuts, colors, and perms,” Voss said. “I also carry Paul Mitchell products for retail as well as Biolage and Roux.” Voss started hairdressing in 1972 after finishing cosmetology college and began her own salon. She returned to school in Milwaukee for a year to obtain her instructor’s license but there were no positions open at that time. In 2000 Voss bought Ken Wenzel’s building on Wisconsin Avenue where he had worked as a barber for many years and was retiring. Now, Hairstyles Unlimited is on the move. From the current president to the secretary to the treasurer and many of the key committee chairmanships, women hold the majority of important positions in the organization.
Wendy Jacobs is a busy woman just with her marketing duties at Willowdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Holstein as well as Meadow View Manor, Morningside Health Center, and Sheboygan Progressive Care Center. But Jacobs finds time to serve as the Chamber’s president and is just one of the people who make it fun to attend Chamber meetings and events. “I have been an active member with the New Holstein Chamber for fiveplus years, serving on (and continuing to serve on) the Promotions Committee as a member, Country Christmas Committee as co-chair, Reality Check as chair, Soup Cook Off Committee as a member and Annual Dinner

I have attended Airport Day, helping to promote the Chamber during the event as well. I have participated in our other activities hosted by the Chamber, as a golfer—if you call it that—in the Annual Golf Tourney fundraiser, a hopeful winner in the 50/50 Raffle Fundraiser, and consumer of spirits in the Night on the Town, and have consistently attended the Business After Hours, helping to support and promote members in our Chamber.” For all that and more, Jacobs was named the Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year in 2013. said, “I have embraced the mission of the Chamber and truly have seen the benefit to our members in the support the Chamber gives through various events and activities. “Growing up in New Holstein, you take for granted the businesses that are in your town. As you age, you realize the real asset of having these businesses locally, not only the convenience, but the friendly, small town attitudes of the owners and employees.” Asked about the future direction of the Chamber, she said, “I am always amazed at the fresh and new ideas the Chamber comes up with, while embracing the tried and true events and activities. The use of social media has continued to give our members added recognition, and I feel that will only continue to get stronger.
Jacobs’ duties at Willowdale have gone hand-in-hand at times with her volunteer service to the Chamber. She said, “Our affiliation with Affinity/ Ascension and the clinic that houses Dr. Sharon Kaplon, DNP, has also proven to be a huge success, which was a fantastic opportunity for not only Willowdale, but also made the Chamber president in me smile, being able to replace the retired and only physician in New Holstein, all while seeing another new business open locally.” When B. J. Jaeckels moved her Olive Branch Custom Picture Framing Services business to New Holstein from Kiel, she also renewed her efforts in helping the New Holstein Area Chamber of Commerce. “I have been involved for only one year, but was a member and volunteer several years back when my business was in town in 1995 to 2000, Jaeckels said. “I serve as the chairperson for the Promotions Committee and was the past chair for the Festival of Wreaths. I enjoyed volunteering for the Annual Golf Outing a few years back. “Being an active chamber member gives me an opportunity to meet other members, put names to faces, be educated about what they do, and it presents me numerous opportunities to build on relationships that were merely acquaintances and
turn them into friendships,” she added. “My business is relationship based. Being a member is good personally and professionally. I am a relationship-based shopper, not price based. I enjoy spending my money at shops/businesses that my friends own or work at. I want my money to first go into the pockets of my friends and family who work hard to offer us the local conveniences.” Asked where she sees the Chamber headed, Jaeckels said, “We are a tight-knit community. I see Chamber businesses growing and cultivating their existing relationships with each other and with their customers through new programs, cross promotion, education and relationship building. This Chamber is dedicated to seeking out opportunities to encourage, educate and support their locals.” Cheri Reedy began attending monthly meetings in 2010 and eventually became the treasurer of the Chamber, a natural fit for the employee of BMO Harris Bank in New Holstein. She has served on the Golf Outing, Raffle Night, Festival of Wreaths/ Country Christmas, and Distinguished Citizen of the Year committees. “As a member of the community BMO Harris feels it’s important to be involved in community organizations,” Reedy said. “I as an employee of BMO Harris felt volunteering my time and knowledge to the Chamber was something I could do. When businesses are successful in the community everyone benefits including BMO Harris Bank. Therefore

Communities we feel it’s important to be involved with the Chamber.” Reedy said she envisions the Chamber continuing “to assist with the businesses that are established and any future businesses that would look to join the New Holstein community. We see the Chamber continuing to assist new businesses that come to the area as they have in the past years.” Renee Jaeckel began working part time for the Chamber in January 2013 as its executive secretary. “As the only paid employee of the Chamber, I have the honor of working for all of the Chamber members in helping them promote their business through our Web site, Facebook page and newsletter,” she said. “I also manage the e-mails coming to and from the Chamber. I report directly to the board. I volunteer on the Promotions Committee but I do attend other Chambersponsored events, take photos and promote these events on our Facebook page and Web site.” She added, “The Chamber is a working organization of volunteers. Many volunteer year after year and others volunteer when they can. This input provides the Chamber with an energetic infusion of ideas and helping hands. with a willingness to try something new. It is an inspiring organization to be a part of and without these volunteers there is no Chamber.” Sonny Schaar has been involved with the Chamber for six years. She is the cochair of Country Christmas, serves on the Soup Cook-Off and Promotions committees, and has done Reality Check classroom presentations and volunteered on Reality Check Day. She also was elected to the board in January 2014 and continues to serve as a board member. “Growing up and continuing to live in New Holstein, I take great pride in the community and all it has to offer,” said Schaar, who works as the marketing coordinator for Premier Financial Credit Union. “I enjoy being involved in the Chamber and helping make New Holstein a great place to live and work.” Ann Hansen is another BMO Harris Bank employee who volunteers time for the Chamber, serving on the Country Christmas Committee and co-chairing the Festival of Wreaths. She has helped with the Festival of Wreaths for about nine years, with proceeds going to the New Holstein Community Chest which helps a wide variety of local organizations. “I got involved with the Chamber because I feel it is a great way to give back to the community,” she said. “I was originally asked to help out at Country Christmas by someone.”
New Holstein Hansen said she sees the Chamber “continuing to help promote the current businesses we have in town and sponsoring different events to get people to come into the city to see what New Holstein has to offer.” She said she chose to work for a New Holsteinbased employer because “New Holstein is a great place to live and raise a family.” She works as a service manager at BMO Harris Bank and has worked at that location for 23 years. Melissa Reese has been involved in the Chamber for roughly 10 years, serving on the Promotions, Soup Cook-Off, and Annual Raffle Night committees. She also
has been the Chamber’s secretary since 2010. Reese said, “New Holstein True Value has been a Chamber member since my family owned the store since 1987, and in past years my mom was active in the Chamber. I personally got involved in the Chamber when Bob Bosma approached me and asked if I wanted to become an active member and I decided it was time for me to be a part of the community. “Being involved in the Chamber shows my employees that we all work together to make the small town thrive and try to lead by example,” she added. “I feel the Chamber brings a

sense of joint business in the community, that each of us makes a difference. There is a realization of the other businesses out in the community and we work together as a team to promote each other. As for the future of the Chamber, Reese said, “With so many diverse businesses it’s hard to promote all the different venues. The Promotions Committee is working on Vlogs and Cash Mobs which is truly showing support from within the membership. These also bring awareness to the other members and community about what our local businesses have to offer. The Chamber will continue to be part of New Holstein and promote business within. I believe if we are passionate about
local business, we can make a difference. Reese added, “New Holstein is my hometown, born and raised here. My heart and soul are in this community. I never planned to be in New Holstein owning a business. Things have a funny way of working themselves out. I am proud to be a part of New Holstein and the Chamber and call this my hometown. Kerri Brantmeier joined the Chamber shortly after she purchased Country Floral—now Floral Studio 1796—in 2011. “I have primarily been involved with the Promotions Committee, she said. “We look to promote businesses that belong to our Chamber. We do things like Coupon
Hoopla, Chamber-sponsored ads, and have recently added Cash Mobs and Take 2 Vlogs. We are also looking into adding educational programs for business owners. Brantmeier added, “I think the Chamber adds value in part and to the extent that you are involved in your Chamber. As a member of the Promotions Committee I can tell you we are always looking for input on how to better our Chamber promotions. “I think the Chamber will strive to keep the local flavor of our small community doing what it can to help promote businesses unique to New Holstein large and small. “New Holstein is where I grew up and it’s such

We always have special events at The Blind Horse, such as our Gourmet Food Truck Festival or our Art & Wine Festival. Our fine dining restaurant is the epicenter of the property, where you are invited to indulge in our vision of today’s fine dining experience. We embrace sustainable practices from local artisan farmers and feature what is fresh right now in Kohler. It’s a celebration of food and wine when you come to The Blind Horse. Come see what everyone is talking about. Owners Bob, Connie, Matt & Heidi Moeller purchased the property in 2012. As they researched the history of the property, they were intrigued with the story of a blind horse on the property. Anton and Josephine Dreps originally purchased the land and started a farm in 1862. Generations of the Dreps family carried on this farming tradition. In those days, teams of horses were used to work the
land, and Birdy was a lead horse that happened to be blind. The Moellers wanted to honor the family and the story of Birdy, the Drep’s favorite horse, by naming the property The Blind Horse.

Grandparenting is great! by Darlene Buechel
M
y world has changed in many ways since I became a grandma for the first time in 2010.
wooden chairs made of branches. The cabin boasted three bedrooms (one of which had bunk beds for the boys) and an upstairs loft. We all agreed there
A recent article by the American Grandparents Association (AGA) states 72 percent of grandparents list being a grandparent as the single most important and satisfying thing in their life. Do I agree with the 72 percent? You bet! Whether it’s playing outside in the sandbox, drawing with chalk on the driveway, going to a movie, or just goofing around, hours in the company of grandsons Maverick and Axel are always full of fun. According to the AGA, there are 70 million grandparents in the nation. In fact, grandparents represent onethird of the population and 1.7 million new folks join the ranks of “proud grandparent” every year. Since my husband Rick and I live only five miles from our grandkids, we’re lucky to get to spend lots of time with them including outings to the zoo and Ledge Park. While we’ve done short day jaunts, we’ve never taken an overnight trip with the grandkids until January 2016. It was then that we joined the 66 percent of grandparents who travel with their grandkids as we decided to take the plunge (literally) and join our daughter Danielle, her husband Mark, and our grandsons on a two-night trip to The Wilderness Water Park in Wisconsin Dells. Our son Ben was drafted to do the milking and hold down the farm, so we packed our swimsuits and snacks and set off for the Dells. All six of us shared a beautiful log cabin complete with gas fireplace and gorgeous pine furniture. Huge log beams ran across the ceiling and the island in the kitchen was complete with

was plenty of sleeping space—too bad a few little boys did not stay in their nifty bunk beds the whole night. The cabin came complete with outside deck and grill, so our son-inlaw Mark grilled his famous brats the first night of our vacation. Those brats and potatoes in foil really hit the spot after an afternoon at Wild WaterDome which included the Great Wave pool and small water slides. The Wild WaterDome is an impressive indoor waterpark with a see-through roof. The dome boasts 70,000 square feet of wet and wild fun and the Great Wave is America’s largest indoor wave pool. Our trip to the WaterDome also included a few raft rides with daughter Danielle and Maverick (then 5). I let myself get talked into the raft adventure even
though I’m not fond of enclosed spaces. Had I known the ride would be in complete darkness and I’d be going backwards the whole time, I would have had more than second thoughts. Even though it was scary and my throat was scratchy from all that screaming, I have to admit it was fun. They talked me into a second raft trip with the promise that I wouldn’t have to go backwards that time. The three of us carefully maneuvered into the raft and held on tight only to have the lifeguard spin it around at the last second so I was again backward bound. Maverick laughed at all my screaming, but it really was a blast. The Dells waterparks are so family friendly that even 2-year-old Axel had a blast. He wore a little blue life jacket and got to do some smaller water slides and the Great Wave pool too. Folks can rent a hotel room, condo, or cabin at the Wilderness Resort which includes a wristband for each guest to grant admission to the indoor waterparks in winter and both indoor and outdoor waterparks in the summer. That first day we took a shuttle for the short ride over to the Wild WaterDome, but the second day we drove over to the Wild West Waterpark so we wouldn’t have to wait for shuttle service. The Wild West Waterpark was awesome too. This waterpark is also 70,000 square feet of fun and features twisting tube and body slides and a dumping bucket—just to insure no one walks away dry. Since Maverick had no fear, he led the way to zipping down the open air waterslides and talked me into the Fantastic Voyage family raft ride. This raft ride was even bigger than the one at the WaterDome and catapulted us through the speedy twists and turns while again enclosed holiday 2016 |

in pitch darkness. Danielle got the pleasure of going backwards this time, so even though I screamed just as much (or more) I enjoyed my forward facing raft ride. Grandpa Rich skipped the Wild West in favor of going antiquing that morning since him and the chlorine smell are not a good mix. All of us went back to the cabin for lunch and naps for the kids, and then I skipped the afternoon water fun in favor of going to the casino and candy store with Rich since my legs were pretty tired from all the steps at the waterpark. That night we feasted on pizza we had delivered to the cabin and then Rich and I stayed with our grandsons while Dani and Mark went out for a
drink and a break from their energetic boys. While I tossed and turned that night amid a few killer leg cramps, I thought back to 20 years ago when we took daughter Dani (10) and son Ben (8) to the outdoor waterpark in Plover. They had such a blast we ended up going several more times. Plover was small potatoes compared to the Wilderness Resort, and even though the Plover Park shut down a number of years ago, the memories remain. That’s the great thing about spending time with kids and grandkids—you can relive the memories long after the leg cramps and happy screams are over. The final morning of our adventure featured leftover
pizza for breakfast and plans for more waterpark fun for the Grandkids. Rich and I decided to hit the road that morning and make our way back to the farm while I still had the energy to climb into our Jeep. While we had a blast at the Wilderness, I’m not sure Rich and I would be able to
handle a trip with just us and the grandkids until the boys are a bit older. Still, I’m glad we took the plunge and I hope you’ll consider taking a multi-generational trip yourself. (For more information on the Wilderness Resort check out their Web site at WildernessResort.com.)
