we asked > What is your favorite HOLIDAY DECORATION? “My husband, in his blinking Rudolph boxers. The inconvenient part is having to hide him in the closet when we have guests.”

CHRIS CASTINO “My Christmas tree with white lights and silver and red ornaments.”

BRENDA ST PIERRE “My favorite holiday decoration has to be the little homemade hand turkeys that kids make in school. I received my very ¿rst hand turkey that my daughter made last year and it is by far still my most treasured holiday decoration. There is just something really special about decorations that are made by your children that make the holidays just a little bit sweeter.”

ELIZABETH BEHNKE “Every December my husband takes me to the WPS Garden of Lights at Green Bay Botanical Garden. There we enjoy over 300,000 twinkling lights and walk through a 60 foot caterpillar. This is the 22nd year of the Garden of Lights and every year they change it up. Whether you walk the paths or take a horse drawn wagon ride on your nighttime visit, you’ll enjoy a magical winter wonderland. Check it out!”

DARLENE BUECHEL “This one is easy! My favorite Christmas decoration is my Mother’s old Santa. Mom was born in 1917 and she always told the story of how she received “her Santa”

as a gift from her Aunt & Uncle when she was 3 years old. That makes this wonderful little guy almost 100 years old himself! He stands about 18 inches tall & shows a little wear but he never ceases to poignantly remind me of the spirit of the season & the love we share.”

PENNY NOVITOVIC “I love fresh evergreens and berries in garlands, wreaths and arrangements. So naturally beautiful and wonderfully scented!”

WENDY JACOBS

PAMELA BUTLER CHANNEL “The Nativity of Jesus. My dad is a woodworker and each year he designs and crafts a wood project that contains the holy nativity.

LISA MATHES “Favorite Holiday decoration. My manger scene, it’s not only something we put up together as a family, but also a reminder of what the Christmas season is celebrating.”

RACHEL ROLF “My favorite Christmas decoration is our Christmas tree. I have a large collection of vintage and newer ornaments that go on the tree every year. We put the tree up at the beginning of December and don’t take it down until the second week of January. We love looking at the lit tree in our living room every evening, and when I walk the dog out in the evening, I can enjoy it from the outside also.”

MARGE PETTS

“My Christmas tree! It holds many sentimental ornaments that we have gifted to my children throughout the years highlighting at least one special event/sport/trip from that year. The plan is to give them their ornaments when they get married/ move out into a home of their own, as a fantastic start to decorating their own tree with past memories while adding to it with new memories.” “The Nativity. During advent my kids would set up the Manger with all the people and animals. Each year one was in charge of taking care of baby Jesus until Christmas Day, when they would get the special honor of placing the baby in the manger.”

DEB KLINGEISEN “My birthday is the week before X-mas. I have a ¿ve foot black X-mas tree with white lights and it is decorated every year with Waterford and lead crystal ornaments dating back to 1978—my birthday present each year is the new dated Waterford ornament and each one is a favorite. My absolute favorite ornament on that tree is the pink swan glass ornament that my Dad gave my Mom for her 16th birthday on Jan. 21, 1940. It always has its place near the top of the tree.

LYNN SCHWENSOW “The Christmas tree all decorated!”

This is the event’s seventh year and each one gets bigger and better. It all began with members of the Sheboygan County Rotary Clubs as a means to spread holiday cheer in combination with doing good for the community. While entrance to Making Sprits Bright is free, food pantry item donations are requested. All donated items are delivered to the Sheboygan County Food Bank each night and their volunteers disburse to food pantries throughout the county. The donations come at a time of year when need is the greatest so the creation of the Making Spirits Bright event has been important for so many people. The grand total of pantry items donated over the past six years is 373,000 pounds - that’s more than 186 tons.

offer a monetary donation, make sure to receive a complimentary copy of the event booklet from the volunteers in the igloo. What can you expect at Making Spirits Bright? When you drive the 1.1 mile route, you begin by tuning your radio to 89.1FM. The lights are choreographed to the music played on your radio. A sampling of some of the displays is Whoville, Magical Igloo, North Pole Post Office, Northern Lights, and Candyland. The perennial favorites are the Icicle Tunnel, Overhead Stars, and Racing Arches. In addition to the lights show, you may even catch a glimpse of the local wildlife that calls the park their home. If you prefer someone else drive you through the park, or you have a large group that would like to be together, ride the trolley. Boarding begins across the street at Quarryview Center every Friday through Sunday night. The trolley leaves every 45 minutes (from 5:15 to 8:15 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. on Sundays) and is $2 per person with children under one free. The trolley is fully enclosed and features old-fashioned style

with modern conveniences. Decorative wooden bench seating and the wood and brass interior will make you feel like you are riding a street car of yesteryear. And don’t worry about the weather outside; the trolley is heated to assure comfort. While at Quarryview Center, consider purchasing raffle tickets to enter the drawing to win wreaths specially crafted by professional local designers. Enjoy complimentary entertainment from local musicians including a swing choir, an accordion band, a violinist, local school choirs, and more. Here you’ll also find concessions for sale such as frosted cookies, brownies, popcorn, hot chocolate, cider, and coffee. Relaxing with some refreshment in the festive Quarryview setting is a great way to begin or end your Making Spirits Bright evening. The Memory Ornament tree is also found here and you can purchase a customized ornament for $15. One of the most popular attractions at Quarryview Center is Santa. You’ll find him in the ideal setting for taking that annual holiday photo. Bring your own

camera or phone though since the volunteers aren’t able to shoot photos with Santa. Keep in mind that Quarryview Center is open every Friday through Sunday from Nov. 23 through Dec. 23, 5 to 9 p.m. So each Monday through Thursday, you can drive through Making Spirits Bright but won’t be able to include a stop at Quarryview. In the six years that Making Spirits Bright has taken place, there have been some great side stories: one couple had their first date while another got engaged in the park, 25 members of the local Jeep club decorated their vehicles and paraded through, motor coaches have planned the event as the stop for a trip,

seniors from an assisted living facility in Milwaukee were treated to a drive through the park, and watch for license plates on vehicles from throughout the nation. This event has added to the attractions that make Sheboygan County a tourist destination. When you are ready to be a part of the behind-thescene activities, there are many ways to volunteer. The success of the event hinges on hundreds of people who invest thousands of hours. The large scale of Making Spirits Bright means work goes on year-round and there are volunteer options for people of all skill levels and availability of time commitment. ith an intense love of everything agriculture, Amber O’Brien is thrilled to have recently taken the helm as Calumet County’s UW Extension Agriculture Educator.

W

Agriculture in her blood

Amber spent her childhood with her three sisters growing up in rural Fond du Lac County where both parents were employed in the agricultural industry. Home schooled through grade five and very involved on the farm, Amber started her own steer business at age nine. “My steers were more than just a herd of cattle, they were my pets. Buddy was the name of my favorite steer. I walked him around like a dog with a leash and collar when he was a calf. As he got bigger, I would call his name and he’d come running across acres of pasture. He never left my side as we walked around the farm together.” Amber’s mother took videos of Buddy putting his front legs on Amber’s shoulders as she taught the steer to hug. “He was a couple of hundred pounds,” she remembers. “I would also take naps with him after bedding the barn with fresh straw.” Amber and her sisters would often attempt to ride full grown steers, not always successfully.

“I am a cow-person,” she said. “I enjoy helping my dad with his grain farm rolling soybeans, moving the grain cart from field to field, and combining; but I have always enjoyed taking care of the cattle in the barns

more than field work.” Amber fondly remembers corn harvest season as her father would allow the girls to play in the corn in the gravity boxes or grain trucks. Amber went on to attend the University of Wisconsin Green Bay campus to earn her Bachelor’s Degree of Science with a major in animal biology and a minor in environmental science. She also received certification as a Veterinary Technician at Madison Area Technical College and has spent time working as a goat and cow dairy herdsman and a veterinary technician.

Calumet County’s Ag Educator Now at age 25, Amber embarks on her new career as agriculture educator for Calumet County and looks forward to working with area farmers, helping them with their issues and questions. Amber said she is excited about the unlimited learning opportunities, meeting new people, building relationships and helping farmers while she serves Calumet County. She said she will work hard to provide effective educational programs, information tools, and stay current on agriculture research and updates. By

With the agriculture educator position vacant for two years, Amber said her biggest challenge right now in serving the community has been letting farmers and residents know she is here.

Thoroughly enjoying her visits to area farms, Amber is open to invitations from farmers so she can learn more about the agricultural community throughout the county.

Amber is actively involved in the Calumet County Forage Council and assists with education and set up at Sundae on the Farm events.

Christmas time is always special in Amber’s family and includes loud Christmas music and a lot of food. “My mom rallies my sisters and I to cook enough food to feed a small army,” she said. “After opening presents on Christmas Eve night, we watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

In her personal life, Amber looks forward to owning a hobby farm someday where she would like to have goats, beef, cattle, alpacas, horses, chickens and enough acreage to make her own feed. “I hope to get married someday, start a family, and

to car, motorcycle, and racing enthusiasts of all ages. Most people would expect a race track souvenir shop to be filled with things like event T-shirts, hats, and key chains, but The Paddock Shop exceeds those expectations by offering high-quality apparel, wall décor, toys, home goods, leather goods, books, purses, jewelry, greeting cards, and more. On a souvenir level, Road America focuses on presenting its iconic track and logo in as many ways as it can— etched on martini glasses, embossed on leather, stitched on sweaters, and knit into socks. Even a dog can sport the RA logo on a collar and leash. With the holidays here, people often hear how hard it is to find gifts for guys. The Paddock Shop is the go-to shop for those gifts, not just at the holidays but throughout the year. Just a visit to the Paddock Shop is an experience. The fun, vibrant product mix is displayed in a setting that is a blend of man cave, race shop, book store, and boutique. As customers move through the 5,000 square foot space they are treated to vintage photographs of Road America’s legends, carefully selected artwork, and lighting made from automotive and motorcycle parts. During the holiday shopping season the shop really glows in the lights of a bright red 12-foot Christmas tree all decked out with motorsports-themed ornaments, of course.

Henning’s Cheese The holiday season is a great time to remember family and friends with a gift box or just a mixed box of Henning’s Cheese. In 1914 Otto Henning purchased a small corner factory and began making cheese. By 1963 his son Everett had taken over the factory and a few short years later moved the factory to its present location. Over the years Everett collected old cheese and butter making equipment that is now on display in a small museum at the factory. In the 1980s Everett’s children Kay, Kerry, and Kert came back to help expand Henning’s Cheese into national markets. Today Everett’s grandchildren Mindy, Rebekah, Joshua, and Zachary are helping to continue the success that

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge

By Marge Petts On many occasions I have had the pleasure of entertaining my granddaughters for a few hours or sometimes overnight. I always try to plan a craft or sewing project for them to enjoy. One time I assembled a large amount of scrapbook paper, glue, colored pens and markers, stickers, rubber stamps, etc., so they could make birthday cards for their mother. Another time we made a mobile. We printed pictures from a source online, cut out the shapes, colored them and then hung them with string or thread from a branch or wire hanger. You need to print and cut out two of each design, so they have a front and a back. I printed owls for myself, and Lily printed elephants, her favorite animal. While we work they love to talk and tell me all about their life since the last time I saw them. Of course, we always have snacks. I’m not sure who has a more enjoyable visit, them or me! I keep a ring binder labeled, “Craft Projects.â€? Whenever I see an idea in a magazine that I think we would enjoy, I tear out the page, slip it into a plastic sleeve and add it to my “Craft Projectâ€? book. I have always liked snow or glitter globes or domes and have a nice sized collection of holiday themed globes, which I display every year. In my craft book I have instructions to make snow globes. I am going to accumulate the supplies I need to make these globes with my granddaughters. You will Âżnd a supply list and instructions at the end of this story. While in a store a couple of years ago with my granddaughters, I listened to a man tell us that he and his wife had traveled to California, saw the Golden Gate Bridge and other

22

| HOLIDAY 2018

tourist attractions throughout the country, but he said that the best and most memorable times were the visits with their grandchildren. Life is Good. Don’t feel that you need to have children or grandchildren to do this project. This would be a good craft to do with a friend, no matter how old or young you are, or make several to set at everyone’s place at the table for a holiday dinner. Make a Tiny Glass World Supplies you need: A clean and dry small glass jar and lid, such as an old baby food jar, jam, mustard or olive jar Acrylic paint and paintbrush Water-resistant glue Miniature plastic toys or ornaments (They should be small enough to ¿t on underside of jar lid) Distilled water Glitter Remove label from jar and ¿ll jar with tap water, screw the lid on and test to be sure it is leak-proof. Unscrew the lid and empty water. Paint lid with acrylic paint; let dry completely. Glue toy or ornament to underside of the lid, keeping any glue away from the edge of the lid. Let dry completely. Fill jar with distilled water, almost to the top. Pour glitter in the water and stir with a toothpick or small spoon. Screw lid very tightly onto the jar. Shake the jar and watch the snowstorm! it comfortable to stop for just about any reason, whether it be a cocktail, a meal or a great musical event. In August, James Clary opened Rumors on the site of the former Chalet and Crystal Lake Inn—a place that has fashioned as a old world, “home style” pub, a place where people can come as a stranger and

leave as a friend. “I retired last year and went crazy up north with nothing to do. That’s when I decided to Zen and go live the dream I have always wanted,” he said. Then, in June, Clary put his energies into finding the right piece of property to launch his new business. The third one he looked at spoke

FEATURED RESTAURANT | Rumors to his dream for an old world, home style pub that could also host bands, comedians and other forms of entertainment. “I have always been known for hosting great parties at my home. So, one of the things I wanted to do is make my place a very home spot, a place where people can come to relax—whether it’s stopping in for a cocktail, a dining experience, or for the family to spend some time together playing games,” he said. For Clary the highest compliment a customer could offer to his new Rumors venture is that they feel like they are being invited into his home and joining in what ever activity is going on at the moment.

C O C K TA I L L O U N G E A homey, cozy full-service bar greets the visitor at the front entrance. Tap beer emphasizes the down home approach with local Wisconsin brews on tap, including a pair from the nearby Plymouth Brewing Company. Specialty cocktails of different kinds are featured on the drink menu, with the special Rumors touch. All cocktails are made from scratch, rather than mixes. “We have already become well known for our old fashioneds,” Clary said. “We do the old-school, handmuddled old fashioned with a mix that we make up on our own.” Similarly, Bloody Marys are made from a Rumors mix. Bloody Mary Sundays feature an amazing version of the classic for just $3, a drink that would easily fetch double that price at most other locations. “We have always tried to think about things from the patron’s side of the bar. We knew what we wanted when we were customers, and that’s what we like to offer to our customers,” Clary added. Rumors prides itself in offering a personable bartending staff, including one server who enjoys mixing drinks

ala “Cocktail” movie style twirling and tossing bottles in the process.

DINING EXPERIENCE Rumors tries to offer unique twists on its dining menu, rather than fitting into the standard mold. Fridays are fish fry nights, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. “We try to

keep our fish as fresh as we can get it. Too many places offer some breaded things from a supplier,” he said. Rumors hand breads its own cod, using a Guinness beer batter. The result is a white and flaky fish. Friday perch offerings featuring a light panko bread crumb crust, keeping the fish light and crunchy. HOLIDAY 2018|

For those who prefer non-breaded seafood, Rumors also offers baked cod and pan-seared scallops. At Rumors, the specialty accompaniment is au gratin potatoes, as the chef keeps endless pans of the house favorite available with the seafood.

P R I M E R I B S AT U R D AY S Saturday nights are prime rib specialty nights at Rumors. The featured entree marinates for three days, then is slow cooked for the best flavor. Clary recalls a recent encounter with an older gentlemen in the middle of the dining area on a Saturday evening. As he approached the dining guest to inquire about how the meal was received, he braced for a response as the man sat back in his chair. Out loud, he claimed, “This is the best d#@%#& prime rib I have ever had.” At least one other diner in the corner of the room agreed out loud. The Rumors dining room seats approximately 50 people, with additional dining available by spilling over into the dance hall. For that reason, and the popularity of the food dishes, reservations are recommended on Fridays and Saturdays. Wednesday nights are Wing Nights at Rumors. Wings are available for 50¢ apiece, complemented by your choice of 10 sauces, all made in house. Wednesdays also feature a 2-for-$5 sandwich special, featuring roast beef and pulled pork. “These are normal size sandwiches,” Clary said. “They are not just sliders.” Tuesday nights are known as Two for Tuesdays. Drinks are two of the price of one, as are 16 inch pizzas. “It applies to all drinks. If you drink Glenlivet, you pay for the first one and the second one is free.” Pizzas of many varieties are offered, including special low carb and

We’re Celebrating 10 Years!

W

e’re Celebrating 10 Years of Health & Wellness at Giebler Chiropractic! Here’s How Chiropractic Care Impacts Women’s Health in Our Community Chiropractic care can have a big inÀuence on women’s health at all stages of life. Women can bene¿t from chiropractic care techniques like spinal adjustments, stretches and exercises, nutrition counseling and other chiropractic services that are designed to improve communication along the spinal cord, ensure proper functioning of the brain and other organs, and strengthen muscles/tendons/ligaments to reduce pain naturally and improve mobility & quality of life that allows each woman to remain active and better adapt to life’s everyday demands. For over 10 years, I feel honored to have played an essential and supportive role in the health and wellness journey of many women and their families at Giebler Chiropractic in Kiel. I take the time necessary to understand the unique health needs each woman presents from her desire to live a healthier, fuller life, to speci¿c health ailments like migraines, sciatica, back & joint pain, sports injuries, prenatal & postpartum chiropractic care needs, and overall family wellness. However, rather than have me explain how chiropractic works and tell you about all the bene¿ts, I would rather you hear from other women who were willing to share their story about their experiences with chiropractic care! Erin Klauck: “I was 34 weeks pregnancy with my second child, a baby girl. We were so excited! Time was getting closer to delivery and we were planning on having a home

birth. When my midwife checked me and declared that little Lily was still “head up” I needed to ¿nd a way to turn her down. I knew that we did not want to go the conventional route of turning her, as I had heard a few stories from other moms and researched the procedure. The midwife directed me to use some turning exercises and go see a chiropractor. Dr. Nic was close by and I had heard a lot of good reports about him. So I went in and he tried adjusting me, using the “Webster Technique”. It was painless and easy for me and baby. Just before I arrived home a bit later, I felt Lily push and turn and she came full circle and head down! It was amazing. I was so happy. Unfortunately, she was so small at 34 weeks yet and turned back over again that evening. So we waited another week and let her grow a bit more. At 36 weeks, the morning I was supposed to see Dr. Nic again, I was actually able to turn her on my own at home with the exercises my midwife had shown me. Dr Nic inspected, and declared Lily ready to go! She stayed head down and her birth was almost painless and so beautiful! Having Dr. Nic as another option took away the stress that I would have had, had I needed to go in to turn her in the hospital.” Heather Thiry: “I ¿rst came to Giebler Chiropractic several years ago to address a nagging pain I was experiencing while running. I was initially seeking treatment/ relief for this pain through my primary care physician with limited success or relief. I knew of Dr. Nic through the local running community, and after casually telling him about the pain I was dealing with and listening to his response, I felt con¿dent he would better understand how to treat my pain. I had also experienced success with chiropractic care earlier

in my life, and was comfortable pursuing a more natural method of treating and healing my body so I could resume my running routine and enjoy improved quality of life in my daily routine without pain. In my experience, chiropractic care and adjustments don’t cause me pain or discomfort. Rather, I feel a tremendous amount of relief after receiving either active or maintenance care adjustments/treatment. It is also remarkable for me to see the positive difference in other people I have interacted with both prior to and after their chiropractic adjustments and/or treatments now that I work at Giebler Chiropractic. To see someone walk through the door of the of¿ce hunched over using a walker while assisted by a companion on one day, to just a few days later walking in through the same door in an upright position and without assistance is a true testament to the bene¿ts chiropractic care and treatment can provide without the use of medications or invasive procedures. I continue with regular chiropractic adjustments in an effort to keep my body feeling its best so I can enjoy all the activities I am interested in. I enjoy spending time with my family in the great outdoors in a variety of activities: camping, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, swimming, riding fat tire & road bikes, downhill & cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. I also like to run and tend to have an overall adventurous spirit so sitting still is not something I am interested in typically! I also have background and training in health and wellness so ultimately I strive to enjoy a welllived life, which chiropractic care and taking care of myself nutritionally allows me to do! Chiropractic care has provided me personally with effective, proven results that I was otherwise unable to achieve through my primary care physician or other medical specialists who recommended more invasive forms of treatment. I have dealt with bursitis in my knee, IT band issues, plantar fasciitis, and a soft tissue injury in my foot that I was able to successfully heal through chiropractic care, whereas the other treatment options offered to me through my primary care physician or specialist included medications, braces, cortisone injections, and potentially surgery. General chiropractic care has also improved my daily quality of life through regular maintenance adjustments, along with Dr. Nic’s special interest in nutrition that directly correlates to the body’s ability to function and perform at its best through the nutrition choices each of us make! Ultimately, I feel that if you are trying to maintain good health throughout your lifetime, chiropractic care can be a valuable piece of your health care puzzle that helps you live a healthier, fuller life!” Donna Berchem: “I actually was a patient of the chiropractic of¿ce in Kiel prior to Dr. Nic joining the staff of Dr. Michael Schleicher. My primary reason for pursuing chiropractic care was for low back pain shortly after the birth of my last child. I felt tremendous relief and improved general physical function and chose to continue even after the low back pain was resolved. Years later—enter Dr. Nic. How fortunate the existing patients were to have

HEALTH | mind & body

such a knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic health advocate professional to continue at the already established chiropractic of¿ce. I immediately liked Dr. Nic. His passion for his profession and the wellbeing of everyone who walks through the door is very obvious.

Everyone’s health wellness journey and treatment expectations are different from one another. With that said, I am always con¿dent in the success of my chiropractic adjustments. If I am experiencing other issues Dr. Nic is always open to offering different techniques to resolve the pain and tenderness. I seek help because I consistently ¿nd a sense of balance and clarity after the spinal and neck manipulation. I feel much better leaving than when I entered. I am continuously amazed at Dr. Nic’s spirit, energy and “verve” for his patients’ overall wellness, his crazy love of running long, long, yes long distances, his “Get Outside” and move motto, the “bowtie” Friday attire, when he brings his bulldog Bertha to the of¿ce, and lastly for his zest for life and love for his family. Kudos to Dr. Nic and staff for 10 years in business!” Well, there you have it. The voices of a couple amazing women from the community. I’m very thankful and lucky for Erin, Heather, and Donna to share their thoughts. If you have questions or comments, don’t hesitate to ask! I look forward to sharing more stories in the future editions of Verve! Have a wonderful and truly Blessed Holiday Season. - Dr. Nic

As for the future of Kiel and New Holstein Family Dental, Dr. Bloomer said, “Within a few years we plan to build a new facility and will continue to provide patients with the newest advancements in technology to offer the best possible care.” Customers are reporting positive comments about Kiel and New Holstein Family Dental. “The one phrase I hear the most from patients is ‘I feel so comfortable here,’” Dr. Bloomer said. “Patients comment on ‘how much we care’ about our patients as well. I am happy and proud to hear these comments, as I believe dentistry should be

APPLIED REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which helps relaxation, improves mood, aids sleep, helps to relieve tension and improves sense of wellbeing. Other benefits may include: seasonal allergy relief, muscular and joint pain, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems, and headaches. Reflexology is based on the discovery that there are points on the feet, hands and ears, which correspond to organs, systems and structures within the body. This relationship is called a reflex, which is when stimulation at one point brings about response in another area. As a reflexologist I use special pressure techniques to stimulate reflex points to help restore you to balance and well-being. Typically, on your first visit I will take your case history, we will have a preliminary talk to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. It’s then time to relax and enjoy the treatment. I will then use my hands to apply pressure to the reflexes of the feet/hands. I may detect subtle changes in specific points and will work on these points, which may help bring the corresponding organ or system back into balance with the body. You may feel slight tenderness when certain reflexes are being worked on and again I will gently work these reflexes, which may help homeostasis in the body. A course of treatments may be recommended depending on your body’s needs. You

NEW HOLSTEIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

“Twas the Night Before Christmas”. The New Holstein Historical Society is again celebrating Christmas at the Timm House. This year the Timm House will be decorated with scenes from the popular Christmas poem written in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore. Moore’s name for the poem

was “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” which he wrote for his children. Over the years the poem has been more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” which is the first line of the poem. The poem is credited with many of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the 1800’s to today, including the use of Santa’s reindeer. The original poem named all the reindeer, including using the Dutch spelling for the names “Dunder and Blixem” and not the German spelling that is used widely today of “Donder and Blitzen.” The poem also had a major impact on Christmas gift giving with the concept of Santa’s bag filled with toys and Santa filling the stockings of the children. Christmas now became a more child-centered holiday. Touring the house visitors will be reminded of the Christmas poem as different scenes will be depicted in the rooms. Visitors will also hear Christmas carols being played on the Timm family Steinway Box Grand piano. Join us in enjoying a visit at the Timm House as part of your Christmas holiday celebration.

We always have special events at The Blind Horse, such as our Gourmet Food Truck Festival or our Art & Wine Festival. Our fine dining restaurant is the epicenter of the property, where you are invited to indulge in our vision of today’s fine dining experience. We embrace sustainable practices from local artisan farmers and feature what

is fresh right now in Kohler. It’s a celebration of food and wine when you come to The Blind Horse. Come see what everyone is talking about. Owners Bob, Connie, Matt & Heidi Moeller purchased the property in 2012. As they researched the history of the property, they were intrigued with the story of a blind horse on the property. Anton and Josephine Dreps originally purchased the land and started a farm in 1862. Generations of the Dreps family carried on this farming tradition. In those days, teams of horses were used to work the land, and Birdy was a lead horse that happened to be blind. The Moellers wanted to honor the family and the story of Birdy, the Drep’s favorite horse, by naming the property The Blind Horse.

The sport of coloring ` by Darlene Buechel

M

y grandson Maverick has been a sports nut since he could hit a softball without a tee at age 3.

Name pretty much any sport— baseball, football, soccer, basketball— and he will say it’s his favorite to watch and play. My younger grandson Axel doesn’t know a soccer goal from a free throw and really doesn’t care. Two boys growing up with the same parents and experiences but with very different talents and hobbies. Go figure. Maverick was 8 and Axel was 4½ when this conversation took place with their Mommy: Mom: “What are some of your favorite things to do?” Maverick: “Soccer, baseball, basketball, football, running.” Axel: “Well…is coloring a sport?” I laughed when I heard about their talk, but I told Axel if he’d rather draw a tractor, dinosaur, or self-portrait instead of hitting a baseball that’s totally OK. In the next breath I told him he should at least try everything so he gets to know what he enjoys in life. The Breckheimer boys are growing up in a home that’s very sports minded. Dad golfs, Uncle Mike coaches high school football, and Maverick plays every sport under the sun. Mom, Dad, and Maverick love watching the Packers and Brewers. Axel might watch a little TV sports but will quickly get out his markers, paper, and scissors for an art project. I’m with Axel. As a kid growing up I don’t ever remember watching sports at a ball diamond or on TV. While

Maverick, 8, was in his element throwing a pitch at a Timber Rattlers game. Maverick loves phy ed and races out to recess for football and tag, I hated muddling through kickball, volleyball, or the dreaded rope climbing. Recess times at St. Mary School in Hilbert were spent playing double dutch jump rope (which was one form of exercise I loved) or playing Barbie Dolls by the rusted metal fire escape in the back of school. I was especially popular when I’d smuggle my sister Diane’s Midge doll to school since a lot of kids didn’t have Barbie’s little sister. These days most fifth and sixth graders probably hide their dolls in the closet, but back then we had fun Barbie adventures at school and under the shade tree in our back yard. While there is nothing wrong with being a sports fan (or fanatic), I’m glad to see Axel enjoy sandbox fun, working with tools, and art projects. Sure, it’s good to run around and build strong muscles, but building imagination through art and engineering is important too. As a grandparent I want to encourage the boys in all their endeavors. Even though I’m not a

sports fan myself, I attend as many games as I can and cheer as loud as I can. So far they are too young to be embarrassed by the loud, blond grandma on the second row of bleachers. Recently an article on Grandparents.com caught my eye. “5 Benefits of Youth Sports” explained how kids will gain skills on and off the field when they play organized sports. The article went on to say how grandparents can get involved. For example, the first benefit is a positive attitude. While it’s exciting to see your grandchild score a goal or free throw, it’s important to let them know that athletes can learn from their success and failure. Be proud whether your grandchild wins the game or not—a positive attitude is the real goal. Mentorship is another benefit of youth sports. Coaches don’t just teach punt, pass, and kick. They can be a positive influence to encourage healthy habits in kids. Grandparents should try to attend practices and games to watch how coaches interact with student athletes. Talk to your grandkids about their coaches and HOLIDAY 2018|

stress the positive ways they help keep kids healthy and away from alcohol, drugs, and other harmful behavior. Organized sports also help kids deal with pressure. The skills learned through sports can help kids learn to relax, focus, and be confident in other areas of life. Grandparents should discuss the 4 C’s with their grandkids— confidence, concentration, control, and commitment. Teamwork is another way kids benefit from athletics since being on a team helps kids gain social skills and learn to work together. Grandparents can reinforce teamwork by playing board games and stressing that it is important to have fun and be a good sport—win or lose. The fifth benefit listed is playing by the rules. Learning to play fair no matter what the outcome will help kids leave the field with an improved sense of self. The Grandparents.com article suggested that grandparents can offer

a subtle thumbs-up sign when an official makes a controversial call to let the child know that rules are rules and it isn’t always about winning. Of course Axel’s “sport” of coloring and art projects is just as important in a child’s development. I recently read an article on pbs.org toting 5 Developmental Benefits of Art. (Five must be the magic number for benefits of anything!) Motor skills, decision making, language development, visual learning, and inventiveness are all traits improved by doing art projects. This article didn’t list how grandparents can provide reinforcement, but any grandma worth her salt is sure to compliment every dinosaur, tractor, or owl her grandkid presents. Whether your grandkid is a star athlete, artist, musician, or still finding what their special talent will be, I think it’s important to encourage them every step of the way—win, lose or draw.
