Ashlyn’s journey Brill family fights for daughter’s health, parents’ rights
I
t did not take long that day in late February 2018 for Heidi Brill and her daughter Ashlyn to know something was wrong after Ashlyn had received a vaccination for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at her doctor’s office. Before they had even left the office, Ashlyn had a lump the size of a softball on her left arm.

The Brill family had no way of knowing that would be the start of a journey which still has no end in
LIFE | Fighting for health, rights sight, one which has taken them from Milwaukee to Madison and Minneapolis to California searching for answers which they still do not have. It has seen Ashlyn have as many as four seizures per day, fall down stairs at school, almost drown in a pool, and have episodes which have lasted as long as 17 hours. It also has seen family members lobby state-elected officials to not change a law which would take away their right to not give the same vaccination to their younger daughter Kaylee, 12, because Heidi said she will go to jail before she would do that. “I just want parents to understand what the risks

are,” said Heidi, making it clear that she is not opposed to all vaccinations. “I kind of feel cheated that I didn’t know about this risk.” The most emotional Heidi got during this interview was when she recounted the first time she felt like she was responsible for having put Ashlyn through this by agreeing to the HPV vaccination, even though there was no way anyone could have envisioned what was to come. Staff members at the doctor’s office told her to put some ice on the inflammation as she was obviously having a reaction to the shot. In the three days which followed, Ashlyn said she was sick and had a

temperature of 101. Being late winter, the doctor’s office said she probably had the flu and prescribed fluids and rest.
Aches, passing out, seizures The fever went away, but then the muscle aches in her knees, shoulders, and elsewhere began. The doctor said it was likely growing pains which the then 13-year-old was experiencing. Then came May 8, 2018. Ashlyn, a young athlete, was at middle school track practice when her life-long acid reflux began. She headed to the empty locker

room by herself to get her antacid. The next thing she remembered was waking up on the floor of the locker room by herself. When her parents picked her up from practice, she told them she thinked she passed out. They took her to the emergency room at Ascension Calumet Hospital in Chilton, where doctors said she may have become dehydrated while running around on the warm, spring day—yet another very logical explanation for Ashlyn’s continuing health issues. Two days after the locker room incident, Ashlyn got up in science class at New Holstein Middle School

Ashlyn Brill stands with parents Jamie and Heidi and her younger sister Kaylee. to sharpen a pencil when she passed out again. The next night after a school dance, father Jamie was driving Ashlyn out to the family’s campsite at Lakeview Campground. Ashlyn was in the back seat when she became unresponsive to Jamie’s questions—he believed she had passed out again. After a campground neighbor who is an emergency medical technician could not wake Ashlyn, an ambulance was summoned to take Ashlyn to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah. The Brills loaded Ashlyn into their truck and met the ambulance in the parking lot of the Calumet County Highway Department garage in Sherwood. On the way

to Sherwood, Heidi said she thought she saw Ashlyn’s right hand shaking but assumed it was because of the chilly evening. Ashlyn regained consciousness in the ambulance. Doctors in the ThedaCare emergency room said they thought her increasing number of incidents might be heart related, but Ashlyn’s blood work came back normal and she was released from the hospital that night.
Regular episodes Two days later at the campground Ashlyn had a five-minute “episode,” then the next day at school came another one in which she really began to shake— convincing Heidi and others
for the first time that she was experiencing seizures. The non-epileptic seizures continued on a regular basis, with Ashlyn sometimes foaming at the mouth and having her lips turn blue. Jamie and Heidi are both first responders, and they noted that her oxygen levels tested low during her seizures. During one trip to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, the doctor was adamant that Ashlyn be taken to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. She spent five days there and was “forced” to have an episode while hooked to monitoring equipment which showed she had no abnormal brain activity. Doctors said they thought Ashlyn’s episodes
might be related to stress and anxiety, so the next step was to see a psychiatrist. The episodes continued. Heidi’s partner at Inspire Dreams Learning Center in Chilton was researching Ashlyn’s symptoms online and found an article which described almost identically what Ashlyn was going through, and the article indicated the cause might be a reaction to the HPV vaccination—something which some estimates say one person in every 1.1 million experience. Heidi said she believes the incident rate may be higher. Friends said she needed to start letting other parents know what she suspected, and she agreed. She posted her story to Facebook, and
LIFE | Fighting for health, rights within a week it had been shared 500 times. A woman from Ohio contacted her, and Heidi also became aware of similar cases in Illinois, Pennsylvania, California, and elsewhere in Wisconsin. Heidi also learned that officials in Japan and Thailand had both banned the HPV vaccination.
Natural treatments tried The Brills received advice that they needed to try more natural treatments for Ashlyn. They sought help from The Wellness Way in Fond du Lac, which helped the family discover that Ashlyn is gluten intolerant. Herbal supplements helped
rid Ashlyn of the acid reflux which she had all her life. Her episodes also reduced to having one every 6 to 10 days, once going 21 days without one. But they were and are still there, sometimes getting quite violent including thrashing about on the floor of a room. Another four-day stay at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee was followed by a second opinion at Children’s Hospital in Madison, then a referral to the Minnesota Epilepsy Group which also treats non-epileptic patients. Ashlyn was hospitalized there twice. Doctors there told the family that Ashlyn subconsciously would not put herself in danger at the onset of a seizure;
for example, if she were climbing a ladder her mind would tell her to come down before the seizure started. Jamie and Heidi said they believed that, until Ashlyn fell down the stairs at school during a seizure and had to be pulled from the campground pool during another one on Memorial Day weekend this year. It was at the campground this spring when Ashlyn had yet another serious incident. While walking back to the campsite after listening to a DJ, she had a very violent seizure. Jamie got his truck, drove back to Ashlyn, and with the help of others loaded her into his truck to take her back to the camper. She continued to have her seizure on the floor of the
camper, then seemingly went to sleep. Heidi said she was concerned when they could not wake her a few hours later, but they also thought she might be exhausted from the intensity of the seizure. When Heidi awoke at 7 a.m. and found Ashlyn still in the same position and still unable to be awakened, it was back in an ambulance to ACH which suggested an immediate ground ambulance transfer to Minneapolis. Ashlyn said she recalls very little from that trip until they got into Minnesota, meaning the incident had lasted about 17 hours. That incident, however, led to some paralysis for Ashlyn. She has constant tingling in her feet which

LIFE | Fighting for health, rights has moved up her legs, causing obvious difficulty in walking. Doctors in Minnesota said they thought it would go away the same day Ashlyn arrived there, yet it has only gotten worse over time.
A trip to California During this journey, Heidi became aware of Dr. Mark Flannery in Simi Valley, California. He is currently treating 37 girls who are having non-epileptic seizures and has treated over 200 teenagers and close to 3,000 people with similar stories. While it is an unproven opinion, the doctor’s nurse said the HPV vaccination is almost certainly the cause of Ashlyn’s condition. The Brills had to fill out a 25-page application and get all of Ashlyn’s medical records together to try to get an appointment with Dr. Flannery. Two days later they received a phone call saying the doctor wanted them to come out to California to see him, something they planned to do in August 2019. They also did a 2-1/2 hour Skype
session with the doctor on July 3—during which Ashlyn had a brief episode—and likely will receive follow-up assistance via Skype going forward. The Brills were told that all 37 girls being treated by Dr. Flannery currently have one thing in common— gluten intolerance. Heidi said that begs the question, “Why are we not testing these kids before we give it (the HPV vaccination) to them?” Dr. Flannery also told them that he believes inflammation of the brain may be a cause of the seizures. The Brills also said they see huge diet changes coming the family’s way, eliminating gluten as much as possible from the household. They said they have learned that gluten can be passed along in any number of ways—by using the same dishes or the same toaster, or even licking the glue on an envelope. There have been silver linings in this family’s dark storm clouds. From bus drivers to school officials and teachers, Heidi said they have received great support. Some people who

Hard at first to accept help Heidi said she and Jamie were always the ones to try to help others in need. When it came time for them to be on the receiving end it was difficult, she said. She said she also appreciates all the prayers directed toward Ashlyn and the family. “I couldn’t imagine living in
any other community,” Heidi said of the response of the greater New Holstein area. Whether it be at school, the campground, or elsewhere, many people know about Ashlyn’s condition and stand ready to help. Still, Jamie said “pandemonium” broke out at a public event recently when Ashlyn had a seizure even though many people there knew about her. Some people were ready to call 911 before Jamie convinced them that it was under control. Ashlyn’s sister Kaylee understands how frightening it can be to witness a seizure. The day after the wind storm which hit New Holstein last August, Kaylee was home alone with Ashlyn

Another silver lining has been the people the family has met along the way—like the good friends they now have in Illinois whose son passed away a short time after receiving the HPV vaccination.
as a reason why not to give a vaccination. All Ashlyn knows is that her life has been changed. She was only able to play four innings of her first softball game this past season. The New Holstein

More families, more questions Heidi said she knows of 10 families in Wisconsin currently dealing with this, 15 in Illinois, and one in Ohio. One of those 10 from Wisconsin is a family in Sheboygan whom she found out about within the past month. Those families are asking many of the same questions. Are parents being told of all the risks of vaccines such as that for HPV? Is there a link to gluten intolerance? Should youths be tested for gluten intolerance prior to receiving the HPV vaccine? Why are there so many more vaccinations today than there were a generation ago? Should vaccinations be spread out more? Do doctors know and believe this is happening and are they trying to figure out why it is happening? In May, Ashlyn spoke on the steps of the State Capitol in Madison about her journey. Heidi is helping to fight some state efforts to remove “parental conviction”

great to an even higher level. Check out what some of the following businesses have to offer as you work to create an even better version of you this fall!
Depke Shoe Store Depke Shoe Store in downtown Sheboygan Falls is a family shoe store which has been in service since 1966. “We provide quality footwear and personalized service,” said Melissa Geisthardt of Depke Shoe Store. “We measure your feet and supply you with the correct length and width shoes for your needs. Our inventory includes all sizes and widths. We also special order shoes if needed.”
Depke Shoe Store also sells arch support products including Lynco, Power Step, and Spenco, and fills physician prescriptions for foot care products. It also carries Smartwool and Extra-Wide socks along with Baggallini purses. “We enjoy serving our customers and educating them about wearing the correct size shoes,” Geisthardt said. “Yes, your shoe size does change over the years. Please stop in and get your proper measurement so you can have happy, healthy feet.” Depke Shoe Store is located at 105 Pine St. in Sheboygan Falls. Please see their ad on the inside front cover of this issue of Verve.
Jazzercise Jazzercise classes have been held in the Kiel area for over 20 years at various locations. Kiel City Hall’s secondfloor gym (621 6th St.) has successfully hosted Jazzercise classes on Mondays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m. for years. Rachael Vorpahl-Heeler, a Kiel resident, is the certified instructor. Classes in Kiel are offered 52 weeks a year. Participants are primarily Kiel residents; however, some attend from New Holstein, Valders, and Elkhart Lake. Heeler said, “Jazzercise is a specialized, medically approved workout that
adapts to every fitness level. Customers are high school, college, young to mature adults working out to improve their cardio, strength, flexibility, and balance. Jazzercise provides the modifications and motivation to achieve the best possible outcome in fitness. My students see their increased fitness level contributing to their overall health. We start each class with a warmup, marching, skipping, running, and dancing in patterns, followed by strength training using weights and tubes. Each class ends with stretches and breathing to assist in the recovery process.” She added, “Whether couch potato or athlete, everyone is able to increase or decrease their intensity because our instructors give plenty of options along the way. New students usually wonder why they waited so long to try their first class!” There are a few men in the Kiel class. “They love the music, and shine in the strength portion of our classes,” Heeler said. A new Jazzercise LO class is offered in Kiel on Tuesdays starting at 4:30 p.m. LO stands for Low Impact (no jumping) full energy. “In this class we use muscle, not momentum, to get a total body workout without the impact on joints—perfect for all fitness levels. Since March, this class has brought former and new students with knee, hip, and back challenges the fun and benefits of Jazzercise without the hop.” Debbie Klingeisen has operated
Jazzercise classes in Kiel, Valders, Manitowoc, Mishicot, Two Rivers, De Pere, and Sturgeon Bay for 33 years. “I love helping people improve their fitness level, and get improved results at their doctor appointments,” she said. “Women are juggling work, families, schedules, and the stresses of daily life. Women typically are taking care of the needs of others before themselves and Jazzercise gives women one to three hours weekly to relieve stress and build physically, emotionally, and mentally to be able to survive and flourish. If women don’t take the time to take care of themselves, the daily demands take a toll on their health.” She added, “Surrounding themselves with positive, upbeat, supportive people allows them to leave class feeling accomplished and confident.”

Animity Health and Wellness Center Animity Health and Wellness is a chiropractic and wellness center located in downtown Kiel. “We’ve been at our location since the summer of 2018,” said Victor Schueller of Animity. “We specialize in treating patients with a computerized adjusting instrument that adjusts the spine without any cracking of the joints, or any twisting or bending the body while adjusting. This instrument provides a customized adjustment, tailored to the individual characteristics of each spinal joint that we treat. The result is a comfortable adjustment, safe for all ages. We want to make chiropractic accessible to those who are uncomfortable with the idea of getting their neck or back ‘cracked.’” Animity Health and Wellness specializes in
Victor Schueller operates Animity Health and Wellness, which is a chiropractic and wellness center located in downtown Kiel providing care for neck, shoulder, and back pain. They also provide nutritional counseling, meditation sessions, wellness coaching, and community wellness education classes for businesses and the public. In the back of their wellness center they have added a yoga and meditation studio, and in collaboration with geM Yoga and Meditation they offer yoga classes several times a week. “We really try to be “different” when it comes to chiropractic care,” Schueller said. “That really begins with the use of an adjusting instrument instead of manual adjusting. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to adjust the spine, but we want to help the percent of
the community that does not respond to or is hesitant to be adjusted by hand. In all that we do at the center, we try to provide a holistic approach, addressing as many wellness needs as our patients and clients choose to address. While we of course want to help people reduce their pain, and while that is usually the primary reason why people come to see us, we want people to know that we also want to help address their other health care needs. If we believe that we cannot help someone at our center, we will make referrals to practitioners who we believe can help our patients meet their wellness goals. We do accept insurance and Medicare, and for those

He lives in Kiel with his wife and two daughters. “I have enjoyed helping with the Kiel Area Youth Theatre for the past five seasons,” he added. “In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, meditating, spending time outdoors, and traveling with my family.”

“I found my passion for grain-free baking after making several lifestyle changes that greatly impacted my health,” Silberzahn said. “Now I want to be able to provide delicious, beautiful bakery that doesn’t compromise the joy of celebrating with family and friends because of a restricted diet. “I grew up helping my mom—who also happens to be a baker—in the kitchen,” she added. “I loved mixing things up, tasting it, and seeing the joy on people’s faces when they tasted what we made. I have fond memories of picking a flavor birthday cake each year for my birthday and enjoying my mom’s homemade creation.” After finishing her bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion, Silberzahn became more and more aware of the importance of food and how it impacted her health. She said, “Unfortunately, shortly after school my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and my dad was battling high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and prediabetes. Something had to change. After reading about it, I switched over to a Paleo-based diet. I was convinced diet and lifestyle played a huge

I love making them treats for their birthdays and other special occasions that I can feel good about and know that they won’t make them feel ‘yucky’—even my baby who is allergic to eggs can enjoy cake and cookies.” Silberzahn added, “I decided to support those making healthier lifestyle changes with something that we all agree is hard to avoid—parties, events,

Not to mention, if you’re like me, and you battle an autoimmune condition such as celiac disease, it can be downright detrimental to your health. Now you can have your cake and eat it too. It also helped her rehabilitate herself after a hip replacement. “For someone who hadn’t done any exercise at all, after two years of pilates, I was able to ride in the Door County Century Bike Ride,” Mary Lee said. “It was just amazing.” Mary Lee is proud of dropping 50 pounds through her pilates journey, along with improving her health to the point where she no longer required insulin.
Mikealynn Trimberger and Mary Lee Fleming teach Pilates for their cleints. Empower Pilates, operated by Mikealynn Trimberger-Hendrickson, and Pilates Living Free, operated by Mary Lee Flemming, are co-hosted businesses that have been operating under the House of Pilates roof for the past three years. But their connection runs deeper. Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. Pilates emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength, and muscle balance. Pilates is named for its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the 1920s. Mikealynn became interested in pilates through her career work in physical therapy, earning her teaching certification 12 years ago. Her first Empower Pilates
studio was located on the north side of Fremont Street. Interestingly enough, one of her early clients was none other than her teaching collaborator Mary Lee.
Mary Lee continues to teach pilates in retirement from her other professions. For 20-plus years she was an art instructor at Fox Valley Technical College. She also worked for the Chilton Housing Authority for 16 years. Now, though, it’s just pilates instruction on her platter.
“I began working with Mikealynn because of my health challenges and simply fell in love with pilates,” Mary Lee said.
On the other end of the spectrum, Mikealynn has worked with top level athletes in their pilates training programs.
While Mikealynn comes from a therapy background and an athletic lifestyle, Mary Lee’s route to pilates instruction came from a different perspective. She was drawn to pilates because of her health difficulties. The healing and health benefits of her pilates journey inspired her to get her teaching certification in 2016.
One of her clients intends to compete in the Kona, Hawaii triathlon, the pinnacle of such competition.
Together, the two divergent paths offer hope for clients of all health and fitness levels. Mary Lee explained that her pilates journey helped
Last summer, Mikealynn offered her pilates training to a local swimming club for eight weeks. “The coach commented that she could tell the difference in her swimmers through those sessions,” she said. Whether you are athletic, or more of a couch potato, pilates can make a difference, the instructors emphasized. Programs are tailored to the needs of the individuals. “Pilates is a method of conditioning,” Mikealynn said. “It helps build functional strength in your core that carries over into every area of your life. Our goal is to be able to do this into our 90s.” She spoke of a recent pilates magazine that featured a lady from New York, still using pilates training at age 102. “We have to drop the bar in Wisconsin to the 90s because the beer and the cheese probably won’t let us get to 100,” she joked. Mikealynn, who still works as a physical therapy assistant for Aurora Medical half time, said pilates training can be focused on improving the weakness of a specific muscle. “We train

The Benefits of Mindfulness
E
arlier this year, I wrote a couple of columns on a new interest I decided to investigate—meditation and mindfulness. Because of ongoing and, quite frankly, worsening, issues with anxiety and poor sleep, I found myself looking for ways to “quiet my mind” more. I simply was not very good at being present and taking deep breaths and working through the big and little stressors of this thing called life. I often was thinking about past mistakes or worrying about future issues long before they arrived, leaving me unable to simply enjoy whatever present moment I was in.
Because of that, I faced a pretty big fear of mine. Well, several of them. I forced myself to spend time alone, in a confined space, without sound or other people or other sensory distractions. I went “floating”. I spent several sessions in a “Sensory Deprivation Tank”. The sessions were anywhere from 60 minutes the first time (which was terrifying!) to 90 minutes. The entire idea of the tank is to remove sound, vision, and skin sensations, so that one is left to simply ‘be present’ and focus of one’s thoughts (or lack thereof) and one’s breath. I won’t get in to all the details of that experience (but you can find my article in the February 6, 2019 Tri-County News. Search “Nic Giebler Sensory
Deprivation Tank” on the internet and you should see it.) but I will definitely say that while it was incredibly difficult it was also incredibly rewarding and has had positive impacts on my life, to this day. Interestingly enough, not long after I began those sessions of “Floating”, Dr. Michael Hetzner approached me about a new group he was hoping to start in the area. We had a wonderful discussion about the possibility of him leading Meditation Classes, and I was more than excited to bring them to my office! Personally, I know that for a long time, if someone told me they ‘meditated’, I would scoff at the idea, or brush it off. “Okay,” I’d think to myself, “so you sit on the ground with your eyes closed for a while. Big deal.” It actually is a big deal…and there’s so much more to it than that! “I have been meditating, sometimes irregularly for about 40 years, since I became interested in studying world religions in college,” Dr. Hetzner shared with me. “Within days to weeks one may notice increased calmness and awareness of what is going on in your world. In the longer term, these qualities are more persistent,” he continued.
Some common misconceptions about the practice of meditation is that it’s “selfish “—it increases communication and compassion with other people. Also, many think it’s too complicated, and that only special people can do it. “While meditation is quite simple, it isn’t easy. Anyone can do it with time and energy,” he added. I can attest to Dr. Hetzner’s ideas on it. Many aspects of life are ‘simple’ but not ‘easy’ and being present and calm in one’s mind is one of them! All kinds of people are welcome from teenagers to seniors. The class is designed for beginners, but those with meditation experience would likely benefit as well. “Beginner’s Mind” is something we all need! The classes at Giebler Chiropractic will run on Tuesday evenings beginning in September. There will be other locations and times available as well, and details are still being planned. While September seems to be a long time away…can you believe we are already through July?!

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts Many years ago, the great Kahkawkonty told how the Great Spirit appeared to a wise forefather and showed him how to plant “corn”. The Great Spirit told him to preserve the two ears on the plant until the next Spring, and to plant the kernels. He told him to preserve the whole crop and send two ears to each of the surrounding nations, with the stipulation that they were not to eat any of it until their third crop. The wise Indian did as he was commanded. By this means corn was distributed among all American Indians. Thanks to the American Indian, corn is not only a staple in the Native American’s diet, but also appears on the white man’s table in many forms. August is known as the gourmet’s month for sweet corn.

Use a fork or knife to poke several holes in the skin to ventilate. Microwave squash on high 5 minutes. Carefully remove squash from microwave and slice in half with a chef’s knife. Don’t try to cut through the tough stem; rather,

pull the cut squash halves apart with your hands. Scoop out seeds. Drizzle flesh with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place squash halves face down in a microwave-safe baking dish. Fill dish with about 1- inch of water. Microwave 5 minutes. If you can easily poke a fork through the skin, it’s done. If not, continue to cook in 2-minute intervals until tender. Carefully remove from microwave and place the halves face up on a cutting board or plate. Scrape the flesh with a fork to create thin “noodles”. Serve each half topped with ½ cup tomato sauce and 1/8 cup cheese.
There is an old saying that when the water boils, it’s time to pick the corn. The simple fact is that corn begins to toughen and lose its flavor the instant it leaves the stalk, so the shorter the time between the garden and the table, the better. Hurry the shucking process by chopping off the tops and bottoms of the ears with a sharp knife. A twist of the thumb peels off the remaining husks. To shorten the cooking time, boil enough salted water to cover the corn completely. Drop in the ears, cover lightly and leave the heat on high. When the water boils again, turn off the heat immediately. Let the kettle sit for five minutes and serve. My love of sweet corn began many years ago at the Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. My mother had cousins who lived in Sun Prairie, who we occasionally visited. On one trip they invited us to visit the festival. Of course, the corn prepared at these festivals is always above and beyond in taste from the corn you prepare at home – and my love affair with corn began. Every August you can experience this festival, in this town of about 32,000, which is a suburb of Madison. The festival starts on Thursday, August 15, until Sunday, August 18 this year. It is located at Angell Park, Highway N and Park Street. Corn is served on Saturday and Sunday only, from noon to 7 p.m. Sun Prairie sets aside four days every August to celebrate this golden vegetable. See Meals with Marge weekly in the Tri-County News.

4 ears of corn ¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon fresh parsley - optional
20 gingersnap cookies, crushed into crumbs, about 1 cup ½ cup pecans, finely chopped ¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted 2 – (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened ¾ cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 eggs 1 cup canned pumpkin 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Preheat grill to mediumhigh heat. Husk corn; remove silk. Rinse under cold water; shake off excess water. Wrap each ear in foil. Grill 15 to 20 minutes or
until corn is tender, turning occasionally. Remove from grill and unwrap corn. Meanwhile mix butter, parmesan cheese and parsley. Spread butter mixture on corn.
Zucchini Potato Pancakes 2 cups coarsely grated zucchini 2 large eggs, beaten ¼ cup chopped onion ½ cup flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon dried oregano Oil for frying
Put zucchini in strainer after grating and drain out excess moisture. Combine with eggs and onion. Combine dry ingredients, mix and add to zucchini, mix again. Drop into hot skillet with oil and fry until brown on each side. Serve with applesauce or syrup.
Grilled Parsley Potatoes Grilled Parsley Potatoes 1-1/2 teaspoons fresh parsley, chopped ¾ teaspoon dried thyme Salt and ground pepper to taste ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter 4 to 5 potatoes, thinly sliced
In a Ziplock plastic bag, shake together parsley,
thyme, salt and pepper. In a heavy skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter and remove from heat. Cover bottom of skillet with potato slices and dot with butter. Sprinkle on herbs and repeat layers. Cook potatoes over fire until golden and crispy on the bottom, flipping once, about 10-15 minutes on each side. Cut into squares and serve hot.
Preheat the oven to 350°. Spray a 9-inch springform pan with cooking spray. In a medium bowl, combine the cookie crumbs, pecans and butter until blended. Press into the bottom and up the sides of the springform pan. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. In an electric mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, ½ cup of the
sugar and the vanilla. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Remove 1 cup of the batter, cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes. To the remaining batter, add the rest of the sugar (1/4 cup), the pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix until well blended. Remove the reserved batter from the refrigerator and spoon about half onto the crust in dollops. Then, layer the pumpkin batter over the top. Spoon the remaining half of the reserved batter over the top. Using a butter knife, swirl through the batters several times, creating a marble effect. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the cheesecake cool in the pan. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours before serving.

In early 2018, Diedrich said Hilbert asked her if she would be interested in taking over the residential part of Hilbert Tile, Inc. so that he could stay focused on the commercial tile side. There is a pathway and journey for all of us, we sometimes navigate to needs versus wants and before you realize it, 30 years pass and you realize this is exactly where I wanted to be. “Helping people of all ages and backgrounds has brought me closer to my purpose here in this world,” Suttner added. “Granted, I have 10 to 15 more working years—this is where I want to end my career. The sense of helping anxious and hopeless people understand what options are out there for either retirees, business owners or someone who just lost their job gives me such satisfaction knowing I am making a difference for someone each and every day.” Suttner said Health Insurance Solutions & Benefits brings a nice advantage to residents of the greater Chilton area. “There are far and few independent agents in the region that focus solely on health insurance with as much knowledge and products as us,” she said. “We truly try to be the experts in this ever changing industry of health insurance whether it is Medicare or Obamacare (Marketplace), all governed by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid. “Government regulation has always been challenging and an ever changing

He added, “I’m seeing a slow, gradual growth in many aspects of the business specifically with the catering side of the business. Hilde is getting more orders for nescos of broasted chicken or ham or pulled pork. I’ll often see Hilde make various party trays or large orders of her delicious desserts. What is interesting to watch is her customer base grow as well. It must be remembered that when we started in this location it was an empty building without any customer base and Hilde is drawing more and more walk-in customers
Dennis added, “The reviews that come in are all good, but what’s fun to hear from our customers is their reaction to the how good the food is, but also the motif or atmosphere. They feel ‘comfortable and at home’ is a common
response along with everyone here is so friendly and helpful. Many say they never tasted pizza this good or that they have eaten a sandwich like the Sassy Hawaiian before. ‘Excellent food’ is a common review many customers post on our page.”

The couple says their original location sells 25 to 30 of the Beasts each week. “The ideas for these Bloody Marys seem ridiculous, but it turns out, nothing is too ridiculous when it comes to Bloody Marys in the Midwest,” Dave says.
Appetizers with Milwaukee flair At Sobleman’s, the appetizer menu also speaks to Milwaukee and Wisconsin traditions. Cheese balls can be found atop the list, again from the simple to the extraordinary. Customers can order their fried cheese balls plain, half naked, wrapped in bacon with jalapeño, or Green and Gold if they wish. Other appetizers include baked pretzels from the Milwaukee Pretzel Company, gouda mac ‘n cheese, wonton wrapped mozzarella sticks, wings/with or without the bones, pickle fries, brat bits, spinach and artichoke dip, chicken strips, bacon cheese cracks or a sausage sampler. The Sobleman’s experience also includes a great Friday night fish fry and a host of microbrews on tap. Miller and Pabst special deals are available on Mondays and Thursdays. “We are unique in that we serve our bloodies and burgers in a very classic Milwaukee-style environment. It’s almost as if our restaurants have become a destination spot, or a landmark of sorts,” Sobleman said. “We are just trying to keep it simple and keep moving forward with the Milwaukee Classic theme.” For more information, check out Sobleman’s on the web, at sobelmanspubandgrill.com or call(262) 236-9899.

In own backyard FVTC’s regional presence brings college to students The Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) Chilton Regional Center supports busy rural students looking to either jump-start their profession or make a career change. Regardless of an individual’s circumstance, all of the college’s regional centers are now designed so students can complete a degree without ever leaving their community. The Chilton Regional Center provides complete academic pathways in Farm Business & Production Management, Emergency Medical Technician, and Nursing Assistant, in addition to a plethora of business offerings. Those range from options in accounting and administrative professional careers, along with opportunities in management. Some of these in-demand careers
aligned to meet the needs of a robust economy can be pursued as early as high school through articulated credits, like the Nursing Assistant program. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) field is an ideal starting point for people interested in nursing careers. “The coursework is quick, affordable, and gets students into the health care industry with foundational knowledge in caregiving,” said Allan Mitchler, director of the FVTC Chilton Regional Center. “We have great relationships with regional health care employers who value the quality of our graduates. Our innovative nursing lab and focus on developing soft skills create a winning formula to grow talent for an underserved sector.” According to a recent article in Nurse Journal, the impact of CNAs
flies under the radar. These frontline caregivers not only personalize care to patients but also offer comfort to family members. That unique balance requires a steady application of technical and communication skills, setting the stage for a well-rounded caregiver to further develop into a marketable employee. The CNA profession innately gives caregivers a rewarding platform to make a difference while furnishing opportunities to network in various settings. “There is no better time to get into nursing, and the CNA route bridges a bright future for those who believe in changing lives,” Mitchler added. He encourages the community to visit the Chilton Regional Center to tour its Nursing Lab and learn how to customize a pathway for any career right in their own backyard. Fall 2019|

UWGB Continuing Professional education
According to Harvard Business Review, self-
awareness is the foundational leadership skill of the 21st century. Leaders who know who they are, and how they’re seen by others, are more effective, confident, respected and promotable. To help women gain the insights of self-awareness and bridge the leadership gap, UW-Green Bay’s Continuing Professional Education is hosting its first annual Women’s Leadership Retreat this October in scenic Door County called “Unique Women Generating Brilliance.” The retreat takes place at the Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor and starts on Monday, October 21, and continues through Wednesday, October 23, with keynote speakers, team building and seminars on special topics. Women will enjoy local food and attractions like Door County Trolley with additional time to explore. There will also be optional fitness and yoga sessions each morning. Joan Malcheski, Green Bay
Packers Director of Brand & Marketing, will give a keynote presentation on “Branding.” Karmen Lemke, CEO Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, will also give a keynote on “Inspiring and Mentoring the Future Leaders in Your Community.” Additional workshops and breakouts relevant to the audience will also be offered. Registration includes lodging, meals and conference materials with an early bird rate now through August 30th. your voice | an essay
OLD DOGS by Darlene Buechel
T
om T. Hall painted a “real life” picture with his song lyrics to “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine.” Anyone over 50 can probably picture Tom. If you’re under 50, just ask one of the three wise women—Google, Alexa, or Suri. I listened to the gravelly, pure country voice of Tom T. Hall as I grew up in the 1970s. I’d share my problems with Frisky, our old Heinz-57 mutt, and the lyrics to “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine” would come alive. My pitchy 12-year-old voice would chime along with, “Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes; God bless little children while they’re still too young to hate.” If you’re not familiar with the song (or if Suri didn’t enlighten you yet), Tom’s 1972 country song was written about an experience he had in Florida. Tom, along with George Jones and Tammy Wynette, performed in a Miami Beach music festival that year. Tom went back to his hotel after the show. Seemed like everyone else was busy nominating Senator George McGovern at the Democratic National Convention held elsewhere in Miami Beach so Tom bellied up to his hotel bar. The place was
deserted except for a bored bartender and an old man. The old geezer struck up a conversation and Tom was quoted as saying, “The rest of it is in the song.” Tom T. Hall scribbled the lyrics on an airsickness bag as he flew back to Tennessee the next morning. He was due in Nashville for a 10 a.m.
recording session and walked in the door with barf bag in hand. Tom finished the melody at the studio and recorded the song that very day that would become his third number-one country single. Tom T. Hall has been dubbed “the storyteller” for writing and singing common man themes. Most true
Cheeseheads are familiar with, “I Like Beer” (It makes me a jolly good fellow), and “Your Man Loves You Honey” tells a sweet story too. While Frisky was my first beloved old dog, I’ve been blessed with a few more over the years. Our kids were ages 2 and 4 when we moved onto our current farm and inherited Skeetz, Fall 2019|
39
an O.T.D. (older than dirt) farm dog. Skeetz, a big wise dog with matted yellow fur, spent his time outside and slept in the barn. Skeetz took a shine to all of us from day one, but Ben (age 2) was his person. As Ben grew older and spent more time outside, I didn’t have to watch him every minute because I knew Skeetz was on the job. When Skeetz died in 1993 I wrote a poem about Ben and his beloved dog that still brings tears to my eyes.
Goodbye Skeetz Tiny shoulders shaking. Head bent down in pain. A 6-year-old stands sobbing at a grave down by the lane. Skeetz was old and mangy, but her brown eyes never strayed. She met him at the bus each day to “talk” about first grade. There were no fancy papers, or a trophy to her name. But she listened to his problems, and she didn’t judge or blame. He doesn’t understand it as he nails a cross of wood. He wants to pet her one last time, if only that he could. Tiny shoulders shaking. Head bent down in pain. Tears stain tattered tennis shoes as he shuffles down the lane. These days I think of the song “Old Dogs” when I pet my old blue heeler. Otis, named after the town drunk in the old Andy Griffith show, is a pure-bred cattle

dog who has never herded cattle. Otis started as an outside farm dog when we got him as a pup over 11 years ago but he quickly latched onto me as his person and I caved and let him become a house dog. Now in his golden years, Otis spends more time napping in his fuzzy, yellow dog bed than running around outside, but he still likes to go for walks and bark at birds and cats. In late December 2017 we welcomed Corby, a corgi pup, to our household. I’d always admired corgis for their short, stocky legs and big ears and thought if they’re good enough for the queen that’s good enough for me. I figured Otis would take Corby under his paw and show him the ropes of life in the Buechel household. “They’ll be best buds,” I told myself. Too bad I was wrong! Otis gave me the stink eye the entire first week we got our new pup. We’d had a few months to prepare for our tri-colored cutie so I had plenty of time to stock up on pup food, chew toys, and pee pads. I should have also stockpiled sleep while I could. You know how it takes a baby three to six months (or more) before they sleep through the night? Same thing with a puppy, but at least a baby can have his diaper changed in his cozy bedroom at 3 a.m. Personally, I was not a fan of taking Corby outside at 3 a.m. in the middle of a horrible Wisconsin cold snap. Otis usually ventured out too, but he’d give me “that look” as if to say “You brought this on yourself, fool.”
Otis spent the first couple of months alternating between ignoring the new pesky pup and growling at him, but now that Corby is a potty trained 1-yearold the dogs get along OK. While I was the one intent on adopting a Corgi, my husband is the one Corby claimed as his person. I joke that Corby is such a daddy’s baby, but I am still Best Person to old Otis. Since Otis is almost 12 I know his doggie years are numbered and I sometimes feel bad about bringing a pup into his life. Still, I think his new hobbies of growling and chasing Corby help keep Otis active. I know the day will come when Otis dies naturally or we have to put him down but I try not to think of that. I’ve shared
my ups and downs with my sweet blue heeler for more than a decade and he’s been an excellent listener and friend. Cartoonist Charles Schultz was right in saying “Happiness is a warm puppy,” but an old dog warms the heart in an extra special way. Photographer and writer Roger Caras said it best when he explained, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” Speaking of wise words, Tom T. Hall penned a lot of them when he wrote that infamous song on that airplane barf bag. “Ain’t but three things in this world that’s worth a solitary dime. But old dogs and children and watermelon wine.”
