J

erilyn Krueger of Kiel never imagined becoming a Gold Star Mother.

On Nov. 5, 2009, Krueger joined thousands of other mothers and fathers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country. Krueger’s story begins many years earlier, on Sept. 11, 2001, otherwise known as 9/11. Her daughter Amy was attending UW-Sheboygan and watched news coverage of the tragic events unfolding with the World Trade Towers

in New York City. “Amy along with her good friend Kristin Thayer decided as they were standing there watching the horror unfold that they were going to join the Army,” Krueger said. “She and Kristin felt very strongly that they needed to do something,” she added. Amy left for Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in January of 2002 and graduated from boot camp on April 4 of that year. She received Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in the mental health field at Ft. Sam Houston in San

Antonio, Texas. “Amy graduated as Specialist E-4 from her AIT on Aug. 29, 2002,” Krueger said. Amy was then placed on the active reserve list reporting to the 452nd Army Reserve Unit in Menasha and continued to attend school while reporting to the Reserve Unit one weekend each month for drills. “In May of 2003, Amy left for a three month deployment to Afghanistan,” Krueger said. “She returned to the United States on Aug. 7, 2003, her 23 birthday.” SUMMER 2016 |

STRONG WOMEN | Remembering

A candle light vigil helped the Kiel community and the Krueger family mourn the tragic loss of SSgt. Amy Krueger and the other 2009 Fort Hood shooting victims.

At that time Amy continued her education, enrolling at UW-Whitewater and majoring in Psychology. “She reported to the 467th Detachment Unit in Madison then, Krueger said. “It was May of 2009 when she was notified that she would again be deployed to Afghanistan, which eventually led to her departure to the Ft. Hood Army Base in Texas.

“On Nov. 4, 2009, I received a call from Amy that she had made it safely from the Army Reserve Command Post in Topeka, Kansas, to Ft. Hood, Texas, where she was to complete the final processing before a nine month deployment to Afghanistan, Krueger explained. “Our conversation was brief as she was tired from the 13 hour bus

ride and I was starting to feel symptoms of the flu,” Krueger said. “Our last words to one another were I love you.” Krueger fell ill with the flu later that day and stayed home from her position in Chilton as an office associate at Foremost Farms USA the following day, November 5. That afternoon, Krueger received a call around 3 p.m. from Amy’s friend, Kristin Thayer. “She asked if I had heard what happened at Ft. Hood. I told her I had not. She proceeded to tell me that there was a massive shooting at one of the Combat Readiness buildings located at Ft. Hood Army base.” Krueger said Thayer has

also spoken to Amy the day before and Amy told Thayer she would be going through processing the next day. “As she was talking, I turned on the TV,” Krueger said. “News of the shooting was just starting to scroll across the bottom.” Krueger said she had an immediate sinking feeling, realizing that Amy was supposed to be in that building. “The first person I thought to reach out to was my other daughter, Jessica, but I decided not to because she was six months pregnant and I didn’t want to alarm her until I knew more,” Krueger explained. “Instead, I called work and spoke to my friend Laurie. I just had to let someone know what was going on,

STRONG WOMEN | Remembering and I was trying to stay calm.” Soon the news started to spread and phone calls from concerned family and friends started to pour into the Krueger household. “One of them was from Amy’s friend, Jill, who confirmed Amy was indeed in that building because the two of them had been texting each other minutes before the shooting began,” Krueger said. “Everybody was worried and just wanted to hear that she was okay.” Krueger and others tried calling Amy’s cell phone with no success. Calls to the Red Cross phone numbers that scrolled across the TV screen also yielded no results. “We tried all of the hospitals around Ft. Hood and she wasn’t at any of them,” Krueger continued. “The situation was looking very grim.” Krueger’s sister was eventually able to reach Amy’s commanding officer, who would not disclose any information about Amy. “About 11:15 p.m. that evening, I told my son Casey that I needed to lay down. I felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders. I had told close family and friends that I would call them as soon as I heard anything,” Krueger said. Krueger said she didn’t sleep much and clearly heard a soft knock on the door. “I tried to convince myself that it was nothing, but then I heard it again ever so softly,” she said. “I walked downstairs and peeked around the corner toward the front door. Through the window of the front door, I could see two gentlemen in uniform. My worst fears had come true.” Krueger said she yelled for her son who immediately came to his mother’s side as she let the soldiers in, knowing they were going to confirm what she already feared. “I don’t remember too much immediately following their arrival,” Krueger said. “My son told me later that I fell to the floor. I suppose I did.”

A wall in Jerilyn Krueger’s home is dedicated to the memory of her daughter, SSgt. Amy Krueger. Krueger knew it was time to start making calls to family and friends as promised. “My son called his sister Jessica and she came over

to the house immediately,” Krueger remembered. “The first person I called was Amy’s father David Deim. That was most difficult. After the

two military officers were comfortable leaving me, they went to David’s side.” The Krueger house continued to fill with family and friends. “Once they heard the news they came immediately,” she said. “Not only to be by my side, but to be together as well.” Krueger said she was not prepared when a reporter from the Manitowoc Herald Times knocked on the door at 6 a.m. the next morning. “I kindly asked her to leave,” she said. “Throughout the next day, people just kept coming and the phone rang non stop,” Krueger said. “Phone calls were coming in from all the national media

networks as well as local media. There were local news vans up and down the road. At one point, two of Amy’s dearest friends asked me if there was anything they could do. I asked them to please take care of the media.” Krueger received a phone call later that day from Sgt. Jennifer Schmidt who was assigned to the family to serve as their Casualty Assistance Officer. “After having been up for almost 22 hours, I finally went to bed just a little before midnight that night,” Krueger said. Officer Schmidt arrived at the Krueger house the next day, on Saturday,

STRONG WOMEN | Remembering November 7. “One of her first questions was whether we wanted Amy buried at Arlington. Without hesitation I said no. I wanted her closer to home. When her dad arrived, he agreed, so we chose the Schleswig Cemetery,” Krueger said. Sgt. Schmidt informed the family of a memorial service to be led by President Obama at Ft. Hood on Tuesday, Nov. 10. “The government would fly us to the service if we wanted to attend,” Krueger said. “We chose not to go. I couldn’t imagine jumping on a plane and flying to Texas at that time.” Krueger said she was grateful to receive a call from Major Scott Leiburn (recently promoted to Lt. Colonel) who said he would serve as the family’s spokesman to the media. A candlelight vigil was held in Amy’s honor at Veteran’s Park in Kiel on Sunday evening. “That was an

incredible event,” Krueger said. “It is estimated that over 1,000 people were there holding candles that glowed in

“When we arrived in Kiel, Fremont Street was three deep with people,” Krueger said. “The children were let out of school just to pay respect to Amy.”

Amy’s close family and friends met at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home in Kiel where two limousines were provided to make the journey to the Milwaukee airport. “The scene at the airport was like one out of a movie,” Krueger said. “There were six uniformed soldiers that removed the casket from the plane and then stood guard around her. The casket was covered with an American flag. Amy was then placed into the hearse and we began our journey back to Kiel.”

Kiel High School did not have classes scheduled on that Friday, so it was decided that this would be the best place to handle a funeral of this magnitude, Krueger said. “The service took a lot of coordinating between numerous city officials and leaders,” Krueger said. “Mayor Bob Werdeo, Chief Funkhouser, Mike Detroye, Lt. Colonel Scott Lieburn, Principal Talerico, Sgt. Schmidt, my brother-in-law Dan Krueger and his wife Brenda, and many, many others put their heads together to make this sad event go as

When she was about seven years old, we were driving down Fremont Street in Kiel and she announced that she had changed her mind about being a lawyer. Now she wanted to be a judge. Again I smiled to myself as I explained to her that she needed to become a lawyer before she could be a judge. That was so typical of her; by pass all the preliminary stuff and get right to the top.”

The well-known and respected Patriot Guards led a massive Kiel candlelight march in honor of SSgt. Amy Krueger in November 2009. Krueger said family and friends work to keep Amy’s name alive in many ways including necklaces with her picture on one side and name and rank on the other. “They resemble a dog tag,” she said. “We wear them all the time.” Many events have been held and continue to be held in Amy’s honor to raise funds for a scholarship fund, the Wounded Warriors, the Mission House, and the Camo Quilt project. “These events include an ATV run and silent auction that was organized by Michelle and Joe Barrette and Matt Klabecheck in 2010 and 2011.” “Kruegs Fest is a concert held each year that includes Krueger family members,” she added. This year, Kruegs Fest will be held on June 12. “The annual kick ball tournament is organized by Denise Meyer, Melissa

Krueger treasures her memories of Amy. “When she was about four years old, we were driving home from LTC where she went to daycare while I attended classes. I told Jessica that was because Amy is the eldest. Jessica and Casey both excitedly said, “Amy’s Elvis?” From that day forward, we would occasionally call Amy Elvis.” Being known as a Gold Star Mother is humbling for Krueger. “Although I gave birth to her, she is the hero. And I always feel that the fathers should be honored also.” Krueger said she does not participate in Gold Star Mother events or meetings as a rule. She has recently met another Gold Star Mother that ironically lives right down the road from Krueger. “Her name is Adel Dotzler,” Krueger said. “She lost her son Robert, who was a Navy Diver, on June 19th, 2013, in a diving accident off the coast of Guam.” According to Navy news reports, Navy Diver 3rd Class Robert Dotzler, 22,

of Kiel, was assigned to the submarine tender USS Frank Cable when he died following a dive operation at Alpha Pier on U.S. Naval Base Guam. Krueger has been to Texas five times since the tragedy occurred. “I was there in 2010 for the one year anniversary and twice in the summer of 2012 for the trial,” she explained. “In 2015 I was in Texas to receive the Purple Heart given to us by the U.S. Government in Amy’s honor and I was just there in March of 2016 to see the unveiling of the memorial that was built in Killeen to honor the 13 fallen, along with all of those that were injured.”

Krueger said. “I found out later that Amy’s estimated time of death was 1:33 p.m. It is my firm belief that I had that dream as she was entering into her new life and that it was meant to assure me that she was okay and in a beautiful place.”

Although Krueger does not remember the exact details of what she saw in the dream, she does remember seeing flowers everywhere along with a lake or stream. In her dream, Krueger asked, “What is this place?” The answer Krueger said she received was, “This is Amy’s house.”

Krueger said the community of Kiel has been outstanding in their support throughout this journey and continues to be. “I am always very honored to be a part of the Memorial Day parade and program. It’s very humbling. I always feel like, ‘Why am I being honored?’”

“I woke up thinking, okay, that was weird,”

“Amy was the hero, I am just lucky enough to be her mother.”

“I have come to know and love the other families of the fallen as well as those injured,” she added. Krueger said losing Amy has been difficult. “I have a wonderful support group of family and friends. I believe in life after death and I know Amy is in a good place.” A dream Krueger had on

LIFE | Fun in the summer designed by women just for women. Liv is a division of Giant Bicycle committed to the female cyclist. It offers a comprehensive product collection designed specifically for female riders, ranging from apparel to premium bicycles. Wolf’s Cycling and Fitness offers everything needed for the rest of the bicycling family as well. “We cater a lot toward the family,” Leikam said. “We have bikes of all sizes for kids 2 years and up.” He added, “Comfort and road bikes are still the most popular. We make sure they are fit properly. We can correct anything on a bike today. People want to be comfortable on a bike.”’ That is just one example of the level of personal service which sets Wolf’s Cycling and Fitness apart from other places where a person might just buy a bike and be sent on their way. Here are just a few other examples: ■ People who have purchased any brand of bicycle sold at Wolf’s can trade that bicycle in toward the cost of a new one when the time comes for an upgrade or if a child has grown out of his or her

previous bike. ■ Technology has improved bikes and has also changed the way they perform. Staff members of Wolf’s Cycling and Fitness will give customers instruction on the proper use of today’s shifting mechanisms. ■ Accessories purchased at Wolf’s are always installed at no additional charge for bikes purchased from them. ■ Classes on a variety of bicycling topics are held once or twice a month. Leikam said he sees a lot of older people taking up bicycling to stay fit but choosing recumbent trikes to also stay safer on the trails and roads. A wide price range of new and used bicycles is available at Wolf’s Cycling and Fitness. “If you’re in a bike shop, you’re going to get a good quality bike,” Leikam said. “We don’t oversell. We don’t try to up them into a more expensive bike.” For more information stop at Wolf’s Cycling and Fitness, call (920) 457-0664, check out www.wolfcycle. com, or e-mail wolfcycle@ hotmail.com.

Jim DePagter of Horn’s RV Center said the recreational vehicle industry and Horn’s RV continue to put in extra effort to make units look as nice as possible to answer any questions any family members might have about RV’ing. owned, full-service dealership that has been in business since 1968. It has 25 employees who can help customers find the right RV, whether new or used. Horn’s RV Center offers complete service of RVs and has a large parts and accessories store with a lot of items to make camping even more fun. Located off I-43 (exit 120) just south of Sheboygan, Horn’s RV Center has two indoor showrooms and has over 150 units in stock, including motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers. DePagter said bunkhouses have been a big seller this spring as more families discover the enjoyment of camping. Camping can be done by individual families, but it seems to be gaining popularity as a group thing where multiple families go together— extended families or groups of friends who may have children of a similar age or another bond that makes it a fun thing to do together.

Horn’s RV Center is a specialist for motorhomes and toyhaulers, both of which have been doing very well again this year, DePagter said. Horn’s RV carries the popular motorhome brands of Winnebago and Coachmen, names people know and trust for building great products at affordable prices. “We’ve seen a surge in people wanting to buy our smaller units, those under 30 feet that are easy to drive anywhere,” he added. For toyhaulers, Horn’s RV handles the top two selling fifth-wheel toyhaulers in the country, Cyclone and Raptor. These units allow people to take their “toys” with them, whether that is a golf cart, ATV, or Harley Davidson. DePagter said, “We have toyhaulers that are only 17 feet long that can be pulled behind smaller SUVs or minivans, or we have the biggest and baddest 45-foot triple-axle fifthwheel styles that have ramp doors that convert to patios, or garages that can

These monsters usually have their own generators to power up to three air conditioning units, four TVs, a full-size refrigerator, fireplaces, and king-sized beds.” He added, “I’m sure the low fuel prices are helping people as units cost less to operate and we are also able to help people buy the RV of their dream as interest rates remain low.” He said Horn’s RV Center is fortunate to have a great service team with 10 service technicians led by Gary, the service manager, with over 30 years in the industry; and Kevin, shop foreman, who is a mastercertified technician. The service team makes sure that RVs, new or used, go through a rigorous inspection process to check all the systems on the unit to be sure everything is working as intended. LAKEVIEW CAMPGROUND EASY TO GET TO BUT HARD T O L E AV E The slogan of Boerger’s Lakeview Campground located along the east shore of Lake Winnebago between Fond du Lac and Appleton really says it all: “Easy to get to...hard to leave.” “What makes our campground unique is the Niagara Escarpment runs right through the middle of it,” said Terri Boerger, one of the owners/operators of the campground. “We have panoramic views of Lake Winnebago including beautiful sunrises and sunsets.”

Hardest working. Smoothest riding!

Lakeview Campground is somewhat of a hidden gem in Calumet County as it is located off a lightly traveled road southeast of Stockbridge. People camp to get away from the hustle and bustle of their daily life, however,

so Lakeview Campground offers the best of both worlds—plenty of activities if campers so choose, but the peace and quiet of the picturesque east shore of Lake Winnebago. “We offer seasonal and

LIFE | Fun in the summer overnight camping,” Boerger said. “Our tent sites offer electric and all other sites offer water and electric. We have many amenities including a heated pool, bar/restaurant, dog exercise area, miniature golf, Frisbee disc golf, an arcade, volleyball, basketball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, activities/games, and very clean restrooms with showers.” She added, “A family orientated environment that offers a little something for everyone is what is most attractive to camping families. We have also seen a lot of repeat and growing business for larger sites to accommodate for group camping and those with larger campers. Our campground is located on 50 acres and there are numerous sites which overlook the lake and fit the needs of the items mentioned above. “Our strength is our customer service and the beauty of our park. We value having fun. Campers are on vacation and they wish to interact with employees who will provide good service with a smile. When you drive into our park you don’t expect to

see the view you do. It is quite breathtaking when all you see is sky and water. “We encourage anyone to just drive out and take a look. We are within an hour from most cities in the northeast Wisconsin area. We are open seasonally April 15 to Oct. 15 and if you enjoy a more quiet stay we offer half price camping on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Once you have experienced our campground you will see we are ‘easy to get to and hard to leave.’” To learn more or to make a reservation call (920) 439-1495, check out www. lakeviewcampgroundwi. com, or e-mail lakeviewcampgroundwi@ yahoo.com.

old bike about six miles before I called my wife to come get me. That was the starting point of my cycling obsession. Today I compete in both mountain bike and road bike races and ride in excess of 5,000 miles per year.” OK, you don’t necessarily have to put in 5,000 miles per year or enter races, but getting on a bike for fun and exercise this summer is still a great idea. And Dittrich knows a great place to shop for whatever biking needs you might have—Sheboygan Bicycle Company at 721 Riverfront Dr. in Sheboygan. Dittrich turned his hobby into a business, purchasing a shop which had gone out of business in May 2009. “We are a full service bike and ski shop owned and operated by people who ride and race,” he said. “We use what we sell. We specialize in carrying Wisconsin-based products such as Trek, Planet Bike, Saris and Borah.” Sheboygan Bicycle Company’s full-service repair and maintenance shop supports any make and model. It offers all repairs along with tuneups and safety checks. It is also involved in many community events for both cycling and skiing.

bicyclists of all ages. “We can provide a comfortable bike,” he said. “Being comfortable on your bike is a priority. If the fit is not right you just won’t like riding it and that defeats the purpose of spending your money on a quality bike. Don’t worry too much about how light or fast the bike is but how well you feel on it. When done properly, bike riding is fun and good for you. That’s a win\win.” Sheboygan Bicycle Company sells both Trek and Raleigh bikes. Trek is by far the most popular and is a Wisconsin-based company with great customer service, Dittrich said. Sheboygan Bicycle Company does not slow down in the winter. It turns its attention to cross country skiing, offering an array of products and waxing service to keep people outside during the colder months of Wisconsin. It also offers a

ski rental service for people who want to try out the sport first or for visitors to the area. Other product lines Sheboygan Bicycle Company carries are Shimano, Oakley, Fisher skis, Red Feather snowshoes, Speedplay, Sidi shoes, Bontrager, Pearl Izumi, Park tools, and Burley trailers. “While turning your hobby into a business can be tricky, it just made me even more in love with the sport,” Dittrich said. “Being able to get people

to start riding or just to help a current rider get more enjoyment out of the experience is a feeling that few cyclists get to experience. I consider myself very lucky to be able to do so. It is my hope to pass on my passion to all who walk in my store.” Experience that passion by stopping in, calling (920) 208-8735, e-mailing dan@sheboyganbike.com, or checking out https:// sheboyganbicyclecompany. com.

Always match flowers to the growing conditions and the care you are willing to provide. Low maintenance plants need minimal or no deadheading and staking. This means you’ll be growing good-looking plants with little effort on your part. maintenance and big results.

Further reduce your workload by selecting self cleaning or free flowering annuals and perennials and those bred for long bloom and compact growth. You’ll enjoy more colorful flowers with less pruning and grooming.

Prepare the soil and provide proper fertilization before planting. Work several inches of compost or other organic matter into the top 8 to 12 inches of soil to improve drainage and water holding ability. Incorporate a low nitrogen organic fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite. com) at the same time. The slow release formulation provides needed nutrients throughout most if not all of the season. Plus, it promotes slow steady growth that won’t interfere with flowering, is less susceptible to pests and is more drought tolerant.

Ageratum, angelonia, calibrochoa and many of the newer petunia cultivars are just a few of the annuals that do not need regular deadheading for continual bloom. Include perennials like willow amsonia, bugbane, Solomon seal, turtlehead and sedum autumn joy for lower

LIFE | Great gardens Properly space the plants, making sure they have sufficient room to reach their full size. Overcrowding means you will be thinning or dividing plants more often or battling disease problems instead of enjoying the full beauty the plants provide. Consider removing flowers on annuals at planting. This allows plants to focus energy on establishing roots instead of flowers. Can’t bear to do this? Then remove the flowers on every other plant or every other row. Then a week or two later remove the flowers on the remaining plants. You will soon be rewarded with full compact plants that will produce more flowers throughout the season.

Pinch back long and leggy transplants. Use a hard pinch to remove the tip and several inches of stem. Use your pruners or fingers to remove stems just above a set of leaves. The remaining plant will still look good while you wait for new leaves and stems to grow and produce new blooms. Encourage branching on single stemmed plants with a soft pinch. Remove just the uppermost portion of the stem where the leaves and tip are starting to develop. Soon you will have a well branched plant and more blossoms. Improve plant posture and reduce the need for staking with early season pruning. Keep mums and asters compact by

elcome to Verve’s beauty products page. I’m Lara Baus and I am not a makeup artist, but rather a well informed consumer with a Àair for makeup products. My opinions are based on trial and error of beauty merchandise I buy, one of my guilty pleasures. Being a middle sister, I’ll offer sister-to-sister advice, by double checking I know which product is better. So let’s check out my ¿rst must-have list!

Top ten products for a day to evening makeup bag. From shower to out the door.

1

6. Mary Kay Brow Liner In Blonde — The perfect color for everyone… start in middle of arch and blend with a coarse small brush to frame your face.

7. Bare Minerals All Over Face Color Bronzer — Apply in contouring areas (below cheekbones, near hairline, and under jawbone) for instant glow. Easiest bronzer to apply without looking patchy. 8. NARS Orgasm Blush — On top of everyone’s makeup list for a reason… the perfect pink/peach shade that Àatters all. 9. Stila Stay-All-Day Liquid Eye Liner — This is a cult favorite for a reason. Easy to apply precise lines with staying power. I recommend dark brown for most!

For all of us, time can be limited, but we want to look our best in the least amount of time possible. Between family, friends, meetings, dinner, traveling... a reliable routine is key, especially this summer! Personally, as long as I have my top ten beauty ¿nds in my makeup bag, I can feel con¿dent and get out the door on time!

10. Lancome De¿nicils Mascara — All time 6 favorite mascara. Every time you try another you’ll come back to this one.

Why Do Chiropractors Use “Palpation”?

W

e all have heard the phrase, “Laughter is the Best Medicine.” Want to know what else works really well? The touch of another human being. Sometimes a hug or a steadying hand on the back of your hand can work wonders as well. And there’s even research that back this up. In one landmark study, 16 happily married women were subjected to the threat of a mild electric shock; touching their husbands’ hands brought immediate relief from the resulting anxiety. Even a stranger’s touch was somewhat calming. “We know that anxiety decreases immune function and makes you get sick more often,” says study author Jim Coan, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at the University of Virginia. “If touch can help you be less anxious, you’re more likely to stay well.” This is one part of chiropractic that I really enjoy, but also occasionally ¿nd to be challenging. There are many people who do not like to be touched, or are uncomfortable with the idea. Yet, I have also seen people get healthier after they were touched. Sometimes all it takes is a good adjustment with a chiropractor’s hands to solve chronic neck or low back tension.

Palpation is the most frequently used diagnostic technique in chiropractic care and is a clinical cornerstone of most physicians’ practice. It is a manual, non-invasive method of determining where a patient has structural or functional problems in the body.

28

| /SUMMER 2016

In palpation, chiropractors use their hands and their detailed knowledge of anatomy to effectively see what is happening in the spine and its supporting structures, such as the muscles, tendons and ligaments. As your chiropractor palpates your spine, he or she will look for subluxations in your vertebrae, which are misalignments that may be causing pressure on spinal nerves, or other abnormalities that may be causing problems in your musculoskeletal system.

HEALTH | mind & body There are essentially two forms of palpation—static and motion. As the name suggests, in static palpation the patient remains still while the chiropractor palpates the spine and tissues to identify any misaligned vertebrae, protruding disks, and areas of pain or inÀammation. In motion palpation however, the patients joints are mobilized, bending and Àexing under the expert eye and hand of the chiropractor. He or she will move various joints through different planes, observing the patient’s range of motion and where a joint may “lock up.” They will also measure the patient’s amount of Àexibility, muscle strength, stiffness, reÀexes and general neurological function. Palpation may be used at every visit so that a chiropractor can quickly determine whether your condition has improved or not since your last visit and they can see which areas need the most care and attention. Based on what your chiropractor ¿nds during palpation, he or she may then order additional diagnostic tests—an X-ray, MRI or CT scan, for example—to get a more detailed view of your condition. Based on all these diagnostic tools, chiropractors can better determine the type and frequency of treatment necessary to resolve your condition in a way that is holistic, drug-free and non-invasive. Palpation is simply another tool in my personal arsenal of techniques to keep you moving well and pain-free. And that’s the only way we should aim to go through every day.

Someone told me, it’s all happening... ummer is a happening time at one of Sheboygan County’s fastest growing destinations.

Between food, festivals and music, The Blind Horse Restaurant and Winery is rapidly growing as one of the most interesting attractions for visitors and residents alike. “We have a full schedule of music for the summer, with four days of music scheduled each week,” Sandy Leske, marketing director for The Blind Horse said. Entering its third year of operation The Blind Horse is building on music traditions that have flourished in its beautiful outdoor patio and garden area. Thursday nights each week offer an opportunity for jazz fans to come out to enjoy great music blended with food, wine and other favorite beverages. Billed as Wine & Jazz nights, they kick off a great weekend of entertainment, beginning in mid-May. Friday nights are rock nights at The Blind Horse, followed by Saturday evening’s Country Night—a

Summer fun | ENTERTAINMENT winner will have the opportunity to compete in the Jack Daniels national competition. That’s like the Super Bowl of all BBQ competitions.” The Friday fare will feature interactive cooking demonstrations, while Saturday will be marked by competition day, with judges selecting the best teams based on pork, brisket, ribs and chicken preparation. Judging will be followed by more demos and live music. “We are excited to be bringing an event of this caliber to Sheboygan County, and we plan to make it an annual event,” Leske said.

The Blind Horse Art & Wine Festival is one of many outdoor events planned for Summer 2016. new genre and night for the winery. All three nights, happy hour begins from 4-5 p.m. with live music kicking in at 5 p.m. Sundays feature the Sunday afternoon patio jam with live music from 1-5 p.m. and $5 Bloody Marys. “We couldn’t be more excited for this summer season,” Leske said. “The patio is such a beautiful place to sit, enjoy time with friends, listen to music and enjoy some fabulous Napa-inspired food and wine.”

Events and festivals Alongside its top-notch music lineup, The Blind Horse is planning for a series of major special events throughout the summer season. Saturday, June 18 highlights the third annual Art and Wine Festival to benefit the Sharon Richardson Hospice. Outdoor art will grace the day on the grounds of the winery. As part of the event, The Blind Horse will help host the inaugural Run With Angels 5K run/ walk event. “We hope people will turn out to run or walk in honor of someone they have lost,” Leske said. The $50 entry fee for the event will provide a

donation to the cause and each entrant will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a bottle of wine. For those who wish, they are able to upload a picture of their loved one, and a custom label will be made for their bottle of wine.

Food trucks return A big hit at The Blind Horse, the third annual Gourmet Food Truck Festival is slated for July 9-10. A total of 12 food trucks are lined up to serve culinary delights, including participants from Milwaukee, Green Bay and the local Eastern Wisconsin area. The Food Truck Festival is open each day from 11-5, and features loads of live music. Food themes continue with a major new event taking place July 29-30. On those dates, The Blind Horse will host Birdy’s Barnyard BBQ Competition, Sheboygan County’s first ever Kansas City BBQ Societysanctioned competition. A big deal among BBQ teams, the competition will feature great teams from throughout the country. One of last year’s top-ten teams is already signed up for The Blind Horse event. “This is a big deal,” Leske said. “The

Other summer festivals include Italian Festival slated for August 13, a Sweet Corn and Blues festival August 27 and the traditional Fall Harvest Festival, complete with grape stomping on September 24. Exciting news Exciting news seems to be unfolding throughout 2016 at The Blind Horse. This year, The Blind Horse was named the “official wine” of Road America. Blind Horse wines will be sold at the track. “That’s a huge feather in our hat,” Leske said. “It’s great to be connected to a world class venue like Road America.” Another major newsworthy item made headlines in early May for The Blind Horse. The winery has launched its wines into distribution throughout the state of Wisconsin. Together with a network of distribution, the wines are already appearing on shelves at outlets and restaurants throughout the Badger State. Five of The Blind Horse varieties will be available including Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Tuscan Blend, Cabernet and Dam Sire. Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts The 4 of July has always been a day to celebrate our freedom, but when I was younger, it was also the day we celebrated the birthdays of my two aunts, Alice and Mabel, who were born on July 3rd. We usually had a picnic at our house to celebrate July 4th and the birthday of these fraternal twins (not identical). th

I remember the long tables in the yard, made from plywood and sawhorses, because my dad was a carpenter. One of these aunts was my godmother, who never married. She and my grandma lived with us. How different things were at that time. I learned to knit and crochet and sew from my aunt. She and my mother’s sewing and needlework skills were of a professional quality. Most of my clothes were handmade including the crocheted pink dress that my grandmother made for me and that I still have to this day. What a treasure. I am also proud to still have the many doilies she crocheted and a couple quilts we used for our beds. Every family member had a summer and winter quilt. When someone needed a new quilt, out came the quilting frame in the middle of the living room. The quilting frame was a place to make a tent and to play under while she worked. 0\ SDVVLRQ IRU VHZLQJ DQG FUHDWLQJ ZDV GHÂżQLWHO\ QXUWXUHG E\ WKHVH women. A more recent skill or craft has been to make items out of felted wool. My interest in learning this technique was cultivated a couple of years ago when I purchased a felted wool pincushion, which I bought for myself “just becauseâ€? – I love it! I then began to see instructions for learning this skill. I recently found a large men’s winter pull-on hat, so I know that now I am ready to try this technique. All you need to start is a wool garment,

Then toss it in a dryer set to a high temperature. Always wash and dry sweaters in a lingerie bag to contain shedding and prevent damage to your washer and dryer. You may need to wash and dry it more than once. If you can snip the fabric with fabric scissors in a clean line that doesn’t fray, it’s felted. Once the felting process is complete, remove pills with a sweater comb, then cut garments into pieces of desired size with scissors. To join felted wool pieces, use the zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. As an example, you could cut the sleeves from more than one sweater. Sew the patches together to make a pillow cover. The possibilities are endless. Check online for more ideas.

APPLIED REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which helps relaxation, improves mood, aids sleep, helps to relieve tension and improves sense of wellbeing. Other benefits may include seasonal allergy relief, muscular and joint pain, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems, and headaches. Reflexology is based on the discovery that there are points on the feet, hands and ears, which correspond to organs, systems and structures within

the body. This relationship is called a reflex, which is when stimulation at one point brings about response in another area. As a reflexologist I use special pressure techniques to stimulate reflex points to help restore you to balance and wellbeing. Typically, on your first visit I will take your case history, we will have a preliminary talk to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. It’s then time to relax and enjoy the treatment. I will then use my hands to apply pressure to the reflexes of the feet and hands. I may detect subtle changes in specific points and will work on these points, which may help bring the corresponding organ or system back into balance with the body. You may feel slight tenderness when certain reflexes are being worked on and again I will gently work these reflexes, which may help homeostasis in the body. A course of treatments may be recommended depending on your body’s needs. You may wish to have monthly treatments for maintenance and/ or because it makes you feel good. Many clients return again and again because they enjoy the treatments so much and feel extremely relaxed afterwards. Other services include Holistic anti-aging facial using jade stones and Aroma touch technique. Being a Certified Reflexologist, I specialize in hand & foot reflexology. I am the owner and operator of Applied Reflexology, LLC. My relaxing reflexology studio is located in the charming old cream city brick church on the corner of Erie Avenue and 6th Street in Sheboygan’s Business District. CITY SHOE REPAIR & MORE

It’s time for spring-cleaning. Going in your closet and finding that pair of favorite shoes, boots, or sandals that you just can’t bear to throw away, bring them to City Shoe Repair & More so we can see if we can give them new life. Whether it’s just a polish or removing that winter salt, or all new restoration. We do snaps, Velcro, buttons, elastic, restoration coloring, and zippers etc. Heels, soles, and or sole protectors, tips, counters (that’s the inside back of the shoe), insoles. Maybe some stitching has come undone, we can do that too. Time to clean up your winter boots and pack them away. New soles and heels

on your motorcycle boots to be ready for that warm weather. Also patches on your leather jacket or vest. FYI: Store your shoes in cedar shoe trees. You have 125,000 sweat glands in your feet—all of them pouring moisture into your shoes. That is why it makes sense to rotate your shoes and, on their days off, put cedar shoe trees in them. Rotating your shoes allows the moisture in your shoes to dry and cedar shoe trees aid in that process. Cedar’s unique wicking action absorbs moisture, acid and salt, thereby reducing cracking and deterioration of leather. Cedar shoe trees also add comfort by smoothing out linings and insoles, and enhance appearance by maintaining the shape of shoes. Available at City Shoe Repair & More. Come check out our purses too. Forget casual Fridays—start up Flower Fridays in which the whole office orders in flowers! Who needs a reason? Send yourself flowers just because you feel like it! “They just make me happy and I haven’t met anyone yet who didn’t like being around flowers,” new business owner Mary Forstner stated. Enough tip toeing through the tulips. An art teacher by trade, Mary decided now is the time to believe in herself, and her dream. In October 2012, she opened Enchanted Florals of Elkhart Lake and started working on holiday floral, wedding and banquet orders and flowers for everyday gift giving. “I’m greatly I inspired by the local business and community of Elkhart Lake,” she added. Most of her previous work was based out of her home and through word of mouth. This spring and summer months she plans to offer a variety of fresh blooms and daily specials. Mary has an open heart and an open door for customers looking to stop in and smell the roses. “I can spend several hours working on a project or arrangement and think nothing of the time,” she said. “I love what I’m doing and it’s not like work at all.” In essence, Mary sends a gift to herself each day. LEHMANN PHOTO ART

Lake Michigan: The Wisconsin Shore—a book of photography “After spending just a few minutes with the book this morning, I felt like I had been on a vacation to Wisconsin. It brought me right back to childhood.” That’s just one happy customer who displays her book in the guest bedroom of her cottage. “Lake Michigan: The Wisconsin Shore” is a really great gift for family, friends, or even your employees and clients. It was recognized as a 2015 Indie Excellence Award finalist in the category of photography. This book was the brainchild of Lisa Lehmann, a Sheboygan photographer. After moving near the lake in 2005 and walking the shore every day, she took a lot of photographs such as winter ice formations, surfers and wild places that just needed to be put into a book. After capturing an incredible photo of deer running in the lake, she became inspired. She contacted her photographer friends and put their best into this book. Nine photographers shared their wonderful images. You will enjoy looking at sunsets, beaches, seagulls, kites, sailboats, lighthouses, deer, dunes, freighters, fishing boats and wildlife. SHEBOYGAN BICYCLE COMPANY

Years ago I was looking to lose some weight so I started running. After a few weeks I developed pain in both knees and an ankle. Accepting some advice from a friend I starting cycling to help out my ailing joints. I rode a very heavy, old bike about six miles before I called my wife to come get me. That was the starting point of my cycling obsession. Today I compete in both mountain bike and road bike races and ride in excess of 5,000 miles per year. I have dreamed of owning a bike shop for many years (as most cyclist do) and when one of the local shops went out of business I seized the opportunity in May of 2009. While turning your hobby into a business can be tricky, it just made me even more in love with the sport. Being able to get people to start riding or just to help a current rider get more enjoyment out of the experience is a feeling that few cyclist get to experience. I consider myself very lucky to be able to do so. It is my hope to pass on my passion to all who walk in my

WORDS of

Wisdom

` by Darlene Buechel

I

was born in 1960 and spent the first three years of my life with a Kennedy half-dollar taped to my navel, thanks to my Grandma Brantmeier. No, I was not the smurf in a coinlaundering scheme. Grandma Brantmeier had simply convinced mom that my belly button would ‘go in’ with a little coaxing from JFK. The coin trick worked wonders until 24 years later when, pregnant with my daughter, I again resorted to taping my protruding belly button. My sister Diane was spared the belly coin, but she spent her formative years with masking tape on her ears. No, grandma wasn’t confusing my sweet baby sis with a Doberman pinscher. She just figured Diane’s ears would stop ‘sticking out’ if they were taped back daily. These days my sister’s ears are just fine, so maybe grandma had something there. As a child my hair was also fine – in texture that is. From the start Diane and I were blessed with very blond but very thin hair. Of course grandma knew that if we kept getting our hair cut it would grow back thicker. I spent my toddler years looking like a blond salad bowl, but to this day my hair is still very thin and very straight. In grade school we gave up on the pixie cut but mom always tried to curl my shoulder length strands the night before a special occasion. Mom would wash my hair, glop it with green Dippety Do setting gel and twist it onto metal hair curlers covered by a lovely red handkerchief. After tossing and turning all night, my morning hair would be nice and wavy – for about 30 minutes! To this day I have nightmares about those beauty sessions and I jolt myself awake screaming, “Dippety Don’t!” Other memories of my childhood include the typical sibling catfights. Of course, I was careful not to pinch my brother Dennis

with mom in view since she’d often warn us that “pinching causes cancer.” That sage advice did not originate from the Surgeon General or old Doc Pinney. The source–you guessed it–grandma! Along with hitting and pinching, I also spent a fair share of toddlerhood sticking out my tongue and making pig faces. Contrary to many warnings, as far as I can tell my face didn’t “stay that way.” When my siblings and I moved on to our teenage years, the “Words of Wisdom” followed us closely. I can’t pin all of these on Grandma Brantmeier, but someone needs to take the blame for telling us chocolate and greasy foods cause acne. I now know that pimples are caused by a buildup of dead skin cells, excess oil, and bacteria. Acne has nothing to do with Hershey bars or french fries. While I didn’t have a huge acne problem as a teen, I do feel ripped-off that I limited some of that good old junk food for nothing. I’m also annoyed that we were told sitting too close to the TV would harm our eyesight. This myth dates back to the 1960s when GE came out with new colored TVs that gave off high amounts of radiation. GE quickly recalled the faulty TVs but those vision related old wives tales linger on. Of course the fact that my siblings and I all ended up with glasses is a bit suspicious. If you’re thinking maybe we didn’t eat enough carrots, think again. Contrary to family belief, while carrots are a good source of vitamin A, they do nothing to improve vision. As I grew into adulthood I did start to question some of the weird wisdoms passed down to me. Was it really possible the Bazooka Joe gum I swallowed at age 14 wouldn’t be digested until I turned 21? Turns out I could have swallowed more gum without the guilt. The scientific American research group found that while the gum base is mostly indigestible, the

Grandma Brantmeier (circa 1970) shared her wisdom. gum itself would have only stayed in my system a week. I tried not to break mirrors, but part of me doubted seven whole years of bad luck could be traced to a pile of broken glass. Also, the idea of contracting warts from petting a toad sounded fishy, but being a sissy city slicker, I never touched frogs just to be safe. These days it’s easy to laugh off most of the weird advice from my younger years, but it warms my heart that people took the time to impart their wisdom. My Grandma Brantmeier died many years ago, but I still miss her cherry custard pie, her funny laugh, and most of all her wacky words of wisdom. As a teen I often laughed at grandma’s goofy advice, but now that I’m a grandma myself I appreciate her gift of caring and I’ll do my best to pass the wisdom along…if I can only find masking tape and a JFK dollar.
