REASONS KIDS SHOULD PLAY ORGANIZED SPORTS

Entrepreneur & former pro athlete explain Life long lessons learned in youth competition

n the past 30 years, obesity has more than doubled in young children and quadrupled in adolescents, potentially leading to a host of chronic diseases later in life, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Conversely, the CDC reports that regular physical activity provides a long list of physical benefits for children, but that’s not all. Daily exercise also promotes mental and emotional well-being that includes self-esteem. “By now, I don’t think anyone is surprised that regular exercise is good for children and inactivity is places them at risk for illnesses later in life, but when you take a moment to consider the data in-depth for children who exercise and play organized sports, the details of a child’s future come to life,” says Danyel Surrency Jones, president of Power To Give and co-founder of Powerhandz Inc., (powerhandz.com), a company specializing in athletic training products to improve performance in baseball, basketball and football. Danyel and her business partner and husband, Darnell Jones, a former professional basketball player who also co-founded Powerhandz, want kids in their community and beyond to benefit from the values learned from youth sports. That’s why they created the Power To Give program, which promotes positive development.

“We believe in the power of sports to change a kid’s life for the better,” says Darnell, who lists five significant benefits of youth sports. • Cultivates a positive attitude: Sports are demanding. Come game time, a young athlete wouldn’t last long with a negative mindset. “Practice is no cakewalk either,” Darnell says. “As adults, we understand the need to hype ourselves before hitting the gym. The rewarding feeling we get walking out from the gym is similar to what young people feel after a game or tough practice.” • Offers a sense of accomplishment, confidence and self-esteem: As the CDC noted, simply being physically active builds self-esteem. We are physical beings who are not meant to sit in front of a videogame for several consecutive hours. “Again, if you’re a physically active adult, you feel that sense of accomplishment in outdoing your last performance at the gym,” Danyel says. “Kids feel a similar way learning new skills and succeeding in a game, except more so.” • Builds better peer relationships: Kids want to fit in, but it’s not always easy. Organized sports hurdles the high wall of social awkwardness so many children feel. Team sports such as baseball, basketball and football demand participants to work together for a common goal, which is a valuable lesson some adults still haven’t learned while interacting at work.

• More restraint in avoiding risky behavior: Ideally, parents can get their children engaged – in anything that’s productive, really. Bored or disengaged children have a way of getting into trouble. A student is less likely to misbehave in class or break the law if it means getting kicked off the team of a sport they love. • Greater family attachment and frequent interactions with parents: Famous athletes say it all the time, “Thanks Mom. Thanks for driving me to and from practice, and thanks for showing up at the games.” And that doesn’t even count helping a child with actual practice – playing catch, squaring off one-on-one, etc. Danyel Surrency Jones is COO and Co-Founder of Powerhandz Inc., (powerhandz.com), which specializes in performanceenhancing training products for athletes. Danyel is a business leader who led sales and marketing departments for over 17 years, sat on non-forprofit boards and invested in early stage companies. Darnell Jones is an entrepreneur and investor, athlete and sales professional. Before cofounding Powerhandz, he was a team captain and academic all-conference basketball player at Mesa State College before he went on to play for the Utah Eagles of the former Continental Basketball Association. Danyel and Darnell created the Power To Give- Building Character Through Athletics, which help fund athletic programs in financially challenged communities.

Editor’s Note

iving in the city of St. Louis is a dream come true for me. I was a poor little girl, with big city dreams and very high hopes. At 10 years old, I came here on vacation with my Aunt Joy and Uncle Tim, and my Cousin Erin and I were having the time of our life in the STL. We loved it. The Cardinals game was beyond fun. The Zoo was mind blowing. OMG the Fudgery at Union Station! The Science Center was more than I could take in to my little brain… I loved it here. I vowed to come back and live here when I was 10. I fell in love with St. Louis on vacation, and living here for the last 11 years has been a dream life.

Sitting at home watching a documentary titled “Living on One Dollar,” and darn it! I’m incredibly sad and depressed - and envious - of the laughter and community of the people living in poverty in Guatemala. I find it heartwarming they band together for survival, and love their neighbors like their own family. The only thing I’ve experienced in St. Louis that has been a disappointment as a transplant is the social poverty. I can’t decide if it’s St. Louis in general, or part of American culture. But I miss the “village” setting in which I grew up. My neighbors knew my parents well, and the influence of my church family and parents of my school friends were an intricate part of the person I’ve become today. That influence seems to be missing today, and I’d love to find more like-minded people.

I chose to be here, and I choose to stay here and promise to be a part of the solution to make it better. I hope there are others who are with me when I say, “I love living here, and I plan to make it great!” Follow me on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, and join in the STL fun! 2015 will be a great year of making our city great!

SQUARE: CEDRIC COBB Cedric Cobb is a native of St. Louis who invented an incredible men’s accessory which is arguably the Best Men’s Accessory of the 21st Century. The ‘Best Pocket Square Holder’ solves an age old problem of pocket squares and handkerchiefs not staying in place in the chest pocket of a man’s suit, sport coat, tuxedo or vest. Cedric has worked in corporate sales and management for many years. He realizes image and brand are very important to a person’s success. In today’s society, it is vital to pay attention to the detail of your wardrobe. The ‘Best Pocket Square Holder’ has only been on the market for a couple months and the local entrepreneur is on a meteoric rise. His product has gained both local and national attention from Jim’s Formalwear - the largest tuxedo manufacturer in the US – as well as Stallone Formalwear, Mark Anthony, the St. Louis Suit Company, Suits 4 Men and many others across the country. The ‘Best Pocket Square Holder’ will attend casting for ABC’s Shark Tank in the spring of 2015. Celebrities and professional athletes are also rocking the hottest men’s accessory as well, and is currently worn in the pockets of NFL Super Bowl Champion, Roland Williams of the St. Louis Rams, NFL Hall of Famer Floyd Little of the Denver Broncos, and actor and heartthrob Brian White. What was the defining moment of your business? I started a consulting company a few years ago called EDGE Business Solutions where I learned quite a bit about what to do, what not to do, who to trust, and when to take risks. The experience drove me to learn

how to identify a problem in an industry or a specific vertical, then filling the need with some type of proprietary product or service. Since I have always been a man of fashion, I noticed men struggled with securing the fashion and function of their pocket squares in their chest pocket for decades. And as I looked across the industry, I noticed there was not one quality product which could make the claim of securing the pocket square all day long without losing its integrity and style. Then, back into 2013, I saw a Steve Harvey Show segment called ‘Ask Steve,’ where Steve was showing a married couple how to fold a pocket square. The only thing Steve could come up with was fabric tape to secure his pocket square. I found it unacceptable for the sharpest dressed man to not have a solid product to secure his look. I then took the ‘Best Pocket Square Holder’ to the next level and officially launched, and now we are making history. Men and women are LOVING this product which solves a 100 year old problem and completes a man’s look. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? Was there a specific experience that lead you to your independent? My inspiration behind becoming an entrepreneur and pursuing big business has been my mother Jennifer Cobb. My mother has been a professional seamstress and sole proprietor for more than 30 years. Ever since she took me to my first flea market and taught me how to greet people properly and negotiate prices I fell in love with business and connecting people’s needs to our product or service. mother always taught me that you could be anything you want to be. What I have always wanted to be is a successful and well respected business man, community leader, and man of God. My continued inspiration is my incredible wife Salise Cobb and my phenomenal children. My wife is a true partner, friend, spiritual warrior and most of all my Queen. One of the experiences that lead me to being more independent as a business owner was the track record I had of making many companies and individuals millions of dollars. At the same time I realized I was the magic making it happen. So, at some point you say, “Why not me?” What is the best advice you can give to young people today? Be memorable. Build your own personal brand not just in the way you look but also in the way you operate and do business. Always operate at a higher standard than your peers. Observe what being an over achiever looks like in your company or industry and be that person. It is best to shoot for the moon and if you fall short then you dwell among the stars. Who are some of your personal business Icons local and national? Some of my Business icons are: Nationally I respect Magic Johnson, John C Maxwell and The great Bishop TD Jakes. Locally I have incredible amount of respect and admiration for Dr. Sherlyn Franklin and Cliff Franklin of FUSE Advertising, Tony Thompson of Kwame Building Group and David Stewart of multi-billion dollar entity of Worldwide Technologies. I have studied success principles they practice and even read many of the same books they have read. I will forever be impacted by the incredible example they set for me. DELUX MAGAZINE

W

hen Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9, Brittany Noble-Jones sprang into action. As one of the first reporters in Ferguson, the KMOV journalist became a go-to source for updates, as she tweeted everything she saw and heard hours before almost anyone else.

She was also the first journalist to obtain the very first interview with Mike Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden. “She just wanted to find out what happened to her son,” Noble-Jones said. Noble-Jones interviewed residents and potential witnesses as the drama unfolded and emotions ran high. She counts the Michael Brown saga as one her most memorable and life changing stories. Due to her great investigative reporting, The Riverfront Times named her the “Best TV Reporter” in the St. Louis area last year. Noble-Jones also gained national attention when she was the only reporter to report on the case of Terry Robinson, a St. Louis man who alleged police misconduct after he said he was unjustly detained in March 2014. Robinson also secretly recorded officers threatening to plant evidence on him. She says the most rewarding part of her job is the feeling that she has helped someone. Born in St. Louis, Noble-Jones grew up on the south side of the city with her two younger brothers—Jarod, 20, and Jordan, 17. Both of her parents were police officers. Her mother Beverly, who is retired, was the first African-American major for the St. Louis Police Department. Noble-Jones is a proud graduate of Tower Grove Christian School. After she graduated from high school, it was important to her that she attend a historically black college, so she chose Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi where she received her bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Interestingly, Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the U.S. As a sophomore at Alcorn State, Noble-Jones became more focused on a building a career in television. Even though she realized that journalism is a tough industry to get in to, Noble-Jones was determined to accomplish her goal of becoming a broadcast journalist by working hard and returning home to St. Louis. Her first job in television was behind the scenes as an associate producer operating the cameras at KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, Arkansas while completing her Master degree in Mass Communications with a major in RadioTelevision from Arkansas State University. She was there for seven months. She previously worked as a reporter and substitute anchor at WEYI-TV the NBC affiliate in Flint, Michigan for a year and five months. She began her on-air career as a reporter at WBBJ-TV the ABC affiliate in Jackson, Tennessee for one year. In January 2013, Noble-Jones joined News 4 as a General Assignment Reporter. She can be seen during the week at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., and on News 4 This Morning weekend edition. She spends a lot of time outside of the KMOV office, pounding the

pavement talking to citizens throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area and surrounding communities. She also searches for stories by connecting with people on social media. Noble-Jones often works 10 hour days. There is always something newsworthy happening throughout St. Louis city and county as well as in East St. Louis. Sometimes it’s a challenge to put down her phone but she makes the effort to do so especially when spending time with her husband and family. Last year, she married her college sweetheart Michael Jones II, who is a college administrator. As a newlywed, time spent with her husband is precious. In her free time, the 28-year-old also relishes spending quality time with her immediate family, which includes watching her youngest brother, Jordan, play basketball at CBC. Jordan is a top recruit in the nation. She regularly volunteers at church events and with organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists. Noble- Jones mostly listens to gospel music and reads biographies so that she can follow other people’s journeys while learning about how they overcame challenges to be successful. She aspires to emulate award-winning female news-anchors at KMOV such as Robin Smith, Vicki Newton and Richelle Carey. Robin Smith is an Emmy award-winning news anchor and reporter who joined News 4 in 1978. Smith is currently a reporter on News 4 at 5:00 and 6:00 and anchors on weekend mornings. Noble- Jones recounted that while she was in college she saw Smith walking around the Galleria and was too nervous to ask Smith questions about a career in journalism. Now she works alongside Smith to bring the news to St. Louis viewers. Vickie Newton joined News 4 in January 2002 and anchored the top-rated “News 4 at 10” weekdays with Larry Conners. Vickie also co-anchored the station’s 5pm newscast. She received the Regional Emmy Award for Best News Anchor from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2003. Newton left KMOV in July 2012 to move home to Arkansas to spend time with family and pursue some new endeavors. Vickie Newton also started her career off at KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, Arkansas. While she was an associate producer at KAIT, Noble- Jones was fortunate enough to work with Newton. Richelle Carey is currently a news anchor for Al Jazeera America since 2013. Carey anchored the News 4 This Morning show on KMOV. She joined the station in the summer of 2003 and left in May 2006 for HLN/CNN. Noble- Jones hopes to continue following in each of their footsteps by progressing from a reporter who gathers news on the current events to an anchor who sits down in front of camera and delivers the news. It is her determination and hard work that has contributed to a meteoric rise in her career as well as gaining the opportunity to work with news anchors that she admires. Her advice to aspiring journalists is to: “Dream big and reach your goals as quickly as you can. And when you get there create more goals.”

1. Professionally I am an insurance agent for AAA and have been in the insurance and banking industry throughout my career. HashtagLunchbag started Christmas Day 2013 in Los Angeles California. A group of friends got together and made paper bag lunches with words of kindness inside for the homeless on Skid Row. They posted images on social media and the concept spread like wildfire. Currently HashtagLunchbag is in over 100 cities and five continents. Our mission is to end hunger in local communities one lunch bag at a time. 2. True success to me would be reaching self actualization and to help as many as possible along the way. I have not accomplished a fraction of what is innate in me to do. I feel I am off to a great start on a very long journey but I am up for the challenge and am looking forward to my experiences ahead. Each time I see people standing on intersections holding hungry signs in frigid temperatures or homeless kids on park swings hungry, it reminds me of how much more needs to be done. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Giving lunches is a good start but in the long run I am looking to help provide aide and the tools needed to find permanent solutions to those in need. 3. The best advice I can offer is to believe in you by never settling for mediocrity. So many have dreams, goals, and wishes but lack the belief needed to see things come to life. Speak things into existence because anything is possible. Of course we do not live in a utopian society however, if you can dream AND believe, then accompany that with positive thinking AND action, IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES. 4. Saturday March 28th is our next outing. We are now having a toiletry drive now thru the month of April held by a few neighborhood schools. Donations can be taken either Rib Shack location or the Mathew Dickey Boys and Girls Club. Saturday April 25th we will have our high school senior HashtagLunchbag outing. Our assembly is held at the Jonas Hubbard Jr. Family Support Center 1629 Biddle, St. Louis,

Naturally I was excited about the move and furthering my career. Unfortunately my stay was cut short due to family issues and I had to return to St. Louis. I was unable to gain my position here right away and was left unemployed. This was a blessing in disguise; I now had the time to do the things I loved which included giving back. A friend in Atlanta introduced me to the HashtagLunchbag movement. After researching and discovering it was not in St. Louis at that time it was a no brainer that I start it up here. 6. room.

Since childhood I’ve received power and energy from those who don’t believe in me. I love being told I can’t do something. It only ignites me to strive for greatness. 9. Two personal habits that have served me well are constant networking and maintaining an updated vision board. 10. The best thing we as individuals can do is being aware that change starts with self. INSPIRE CHARLES BROWN “The St. Louis fashion scene is full of surprises. I think it’s underestimated but there’s room for a thriving fashion industry for ambitious fashion professionals. We have the talent, we just need the critical masses and the city is heading in that direction,” declares Debra Bass. A Las Vegas native who now calls St. Louis home, Bass admits, “I never wanted to be a fashion expert, but life happens.” For the past eight years, Bass has attended fashion week in New York City, a place where every thriving fashionista would die to go. “I don’t consider myself a fashion expert, I read a lot about it, I’m not shy about my opinions on fashion, but I guess I’m as much of an expert as the television personalities on ‘Fashion Police’ .” And that she is. Debra gave essential advice on building one a versatile and useful wardrobe. “I’d always tell someone to invest in better basics. Some people think style is all about the loud, over-thetop pieces, but you can see the true style of people in their basics. Not everyone needs a blazer, but if you want a new sweater don’t buy three cheap ones you’ll throw away in a year, invest in one that you’ll want to wear for the next three years or more. The same goes for everything in your closet. Find the basic colors you wear often and don’t buy anything that won’t coordinate with at least three things you already own.” Advice to be tucked and stored away til shopping day arrives, Bass seriously advises investments in boots, a great bag or a striking winter coat. Staples you’ll wear and rotate for years. “If I’m spending money on something I don’t like it to be flashy, I want it to look expensive- even if it’s not.” Invitations to the best fashion shows and parties, champagne on tap.... A fashion editor’s life may sound heavenly, but the journey to front-row Nirvana is no easy five step guide to entitlement. Words to all those who want to be the next Debra Bass? “Don’t be me, be the best you. Study. I meet lots of people who want to go into fashion, but they can’t name five fashion designers off the top of their heads or they don’t know a common designer name like Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy.” When asked her favorite looks for upcoming spring and summer 2015, “I do like the color of the year prediction of marsala, a warm red wine, but I’m looking forward to less fitted jeans and summer dresses, any dress that doesn’t require the parka I’m wearing now,” Bass laughs. “I don’t have a favorite fashionista but if you’re on Instagram you have to follow these guys @ iseeadifferentyou and @ciprianaquann, they have fun with style. Don’t try too hard to be stylish, just be you.” Follow Debra’s weekly video series called #STLStreetStyle and check out her blog, Deb’s Style File at stltoday.com/stylefile. IS THIS HOW YOUR BANK SEES YOU? We don’t. We see you as an individual. With the guts to run a business. Which makes us curious how you do it. And how we, as your bank, can help you do it better. What makes your business special? What is its true potential? How do you actually get paid? It’s how we can generate ideas that work for you. Like integrated payables and receivables solutions that may help you improve cash flow. Or, perhaps, financing options you never knew existed. We don’t think a bank can do that without being curious. ooking to sell your home or hoping to buy your dream home? Buying or selling a home can be exciting, but also be overwhelming especially if you are a first time homebuyer. Here are some tips to help you get started and find the best available financing options and planning advice to fit your needs.

SELLING A HOME:

BUYING A HOME: • Assess what your future needs may be. Do you plan on having more children? Do you plan on staying in this city for several years? Thinking about your home needs now and how they may change in the next five, 10, 15 or 20 years can help you decide on what size and type of home you will need.

What to Consider When Buying or Selling a Home

• Hire a realtor. Engaging a real estate professional is beneficial when you are buying a home, and it can definitely be a plus when trying to sell your home. Even though many people do sell their own homes, a realtor provides experience and insights on local neighborhoods and competitive pricing. Also, a realtor can offer best practices for improving your home, reviewing contracts, negotiating and working with attorneys and home inspectors. You also may meet some potential buyers through your realtor’s network of clients. Interview at least three realtors to find the one who best meets your needs.

By Royce Sutton, Senior Vice President and Director of Community and Economic Development for Fifth Third Bank, St. Louis.

• Determine how much home you can afford. Review your budget, future expenses and current debt and income to understand how much you could spend on a new home while also meeting your other financial obligations. • Review your credit report. Before applying for a mortgage loan, gain access to your most recent credit report. This will help you identify any discrepancies and fix the issues before beginning the mortgage loan process. You are entitled to one free credit report each year at www.annualcreditreport.com • Meet with a mortgage loan originator who focuses on your family’s mortgage needs. There are specific programs for first time homebuyers. Through a discussion, the mortgage professional will help you understand what type of mortgage and monthly payment you can afford and how much of a down payment may be required. He or she also can educate you on current interest rates and available loan options for you and help you find the right mortgage for your financial situation. Fifth Third Bank professionals meet many clients at their own office or place of work for their convenience. • Do your homework. Homes in good school districts can benefit you even if you don’t have children when it comes time to sell your home. Visit a potential house at different times of the day – day, night and weekends – to get a feel for the neighborhood, traffic flow and noise level. Also, research recent sales of similar homes in the neighborhood. This will help you get a sense of housing costs in the area and what may be an appropriate opening bid when it comes time to begin making a purchase. • Wise Money Choices. As you are begin the process of purchasing a new home you should save as much money as you can to prepare for the down payment, closing cost and moving expenses. Also, you can use some of your savings to decorate your new home.

• Make improvements to appeal to buyers and help with your home appraisal. You don’t have to make major improvements to potentially improve the value of your home. Upgrading windows and landscaping or refreshing your kitchen and bathroom can make your home more desirable to potential buyers. Whether your improvements include a whole house makeover or a fresh coat of paint, keeping your house in good shape can improve your chances of selling faster and getting a better appraisal on your home’s value. Whether you are buying or selling, having the right information can make all the difference. Lending is subject to credit review and approval. e’ve all seen the smooth, glowing skin of certain celebrities and wondered to ourselves: how they maintain such a flawless complexion? While most of us don’t have the money or access to the trainers, personal chefs, or glam squads available to A-List celebrities, there are many skin care tricks and treatments that celebrities enjoy which are well within our reach. One such treatment is Diamond Microdermabrasion, which is one of Hollywood’s most coveted, non-surgical skin fixes, and is used by celebrities such as Angela Bassett, Naomi Campbell and Kim Kardashian-West to maintain their youthful complexions. Diamond Microdermabrasion is a physical method of exfoliation, using a wand covered in crushed diamonds that smoothly removes dead skin, promotes healthy cell turnover, and stimulates the creation of collagen. This pain-free procedure immediately leaves the skin clearer and brighter. The treatment is also extremely convenient, affordable (cost: $55 $400 per treatment) and safe for use on all skin types and skin tones. There’s also no downtime. You can go out the same day you receive this treatment. The typical Diamond Microdermabrasion treatment can take between 15 – 45 minutes to perform and is available at licensed skin care centers and med spas throughout the country. Another pro treatment used by Kerry Washington, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj is the Chemical Peel. Chemical Peels are a chemical method of exfoliation which provide overall skin rejuvenation. Peels are also used to fade dark marks, improve acne, stimulate collagen, and reduce fine lines, wrinkles and pore sizes. Similar to Diamond Microdermabrasion, after a Chemical Peel treatment you can expect to see immediate improvement in the smoothness and brightness of your skin. Unlike Diamond Microdermabrasion, however, you may experience some short-term flakiness (lasting for up to 7 days) as the dead skin that was treated begins to shed and uncover the new radiant skin that lies underneath. You should expect to always receive a post-procedure skin care kit to take home after you receive this treatment to ensure that your skin is cleansed and moisturized properly as it heals during the days to follow. This is another convenient and affordable treatment (cost: $55 - $400 per treatment) and is also available at licensed skin care centers and med spas throughout the country. Most celebrities rely on professional treatments to guarantee their enviable skin, but they also understand that to maintain the results that they have to abide by a great home care routine. And great doesn’t always mean expensive! For instance, Amber Rose credits her exceptional skin to the daily use of Raw African Shea Butter. Amber has been quoted saying that, after both her morning and evening shower, she microwaves the butter and spreads it all over her body including her face and scalp. Halle Berry has been quoted saying that she adds ground coffee beans to her body wash to assist in keeping cellulite at bay! The caffeine from the coffee has been said to reduce the appearance of cellulite and draw out toxins from the skin. Singer Ciara credits her glowing skin to the daily use of Cetaphil Body Lotion, which can easily be found in drugstores like Walgreens. Another great celebrity tip to remember is to ALWAYS use sun protection! No matter your ethnicity or skin color, sun protection is vital to any anti-aging or beauty routine. Sun protection with an SPF 30 or higher should be used daily, whether you are indoors or outdoors, and especially following any exfoliating treatment where virgin skin is now exposed. Follow these suggestions and you too will have enviable celebrity quality skin! WHO ARE YOU, PART 3:

REINVENTING YOURSELF By: Karen Banks, M.Ed., PLPC, Therapist & Owner of Trinity Wellness, LLC

In wrapping up this three-part series on discovering yourself, it seems important to talk about how to put the changes you desire into practice, and live your redefined or newly discovered self. While this list of suggestions is not exhaustive, it offers a starting point for ways to continue reinventing yourself. The first and most important step to reinvention is to find your motivation. Why are you seeking change? Focus on intrinsic values and not external factors. This is a great time to make a new vision board so your intentions are always in front of you. (Whether you choose a vision board or a journal, you MUST put your goals in writing!) Know who you are and who you want to be and work to get those aligned. As mentioned in the past two articles, find your values and work to live them daily. Expect to stumble and fall back into old habits but don’t beat yourself up; change is hard work! Practice, practice, practice. Living life is about just that: LIVING life. Practicing who we want to become leads not to perfection as the adage goes, but it forms us. The more we spend time practicing our new self, we are refining our life and it becomes a part of us. Life is about growth and experiences, there is no final destination. Take this time to educate yourself. Whether you choose formal education or to simply read something new, there is a myriad of information available to you. Read about other people who have reinvented themselves, learn about some of the most successful people on the planet, discover new ways to do things. Learn about what has helped other people and it will surely offer some instruction and encouragement.

Surrounding yourself with people who respect your goals and can offer some constructive and honest guidance will be a big help. This is a great time to grow your personal and professional network to find those people who either are already a part of your life or should be in your circle. Reinventing yourself also means that some existing relationships may need to be reevaluated. A big part of who you are is reflected in your inner circle. Try some new things to help you reach your goals. Maybe try some reiki healing or having your chakras aligned. Go for a walk or a nature hike. Commit to being a vegetarian for a month to see if you can experience some enlightenment. You never know what might appeal to you and help you along your journey until you try it. Finally, consider all factors during this process. Do you need to change your look, walk, talk, job, or surroundings as well? While some of these things might seem trivial, when we look good, we feel good. Could a bold new lipstick or outfit help change your outlook on life? Maybe a job more aligned with your values could propel you to bliss. This reinvention is about saying yes to new opportunities that might help you become YOU. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and changes as you continue to grow. Worrying about if others will perceive you as “acting brand new” or being fake is not helpful. Furthermore, what other people think is no concern of yours. Only you know your path and making a concerted effort every day to walk your own path is the best way to live as the new and improved you! Best of luck on this part of your journey. If you find you would like some personal guidance, reach out to me at info@trinitywellness. org. If you would like to share encouragement or your success, tweet about it @TrinityWellSTL

STAYCATION There are so many great destinations to take a day trip to that it’s hard to put into a top 5 list. The city serves as a major connector to so many cities in the midwest and is one of the many great things about living in St. Louis. To help narrow down the choices a little these are limited to within 100 miles or under a 2 hour drive from the center of the city. Of course you can just as easily turn these day trips into an over night trip or weekend trip if you need to get away for a little bit. So here is the top 5 list of day trips from St. Louis. St. Charles is even close enough for an evening trip. Besides the restaurants and shopping, the historic city also offers a lot of entertainment. Check out the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, wineries, as well as historical attractions of Missouri’s first state capital. Hannibal, America’s Hometown, is right about a 2 hour drive from St. Louis. Visit the birthplace of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. There’s also plenty of entertainment and events like the Music Down By The River Summer Concert Series, which is a lot of fun. Missouri Wine Country is a region just an hour west of the city. While this can be a day trip, you really need to make a weekend of it. There’s so much to explore in the wine country. Be sure to check the events calendar before you plan your day trip though. There’s always something going on. Springfield, Illinois is only about an hour and fortyfive minutes north of St. Louis. Visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, museums, historic sites, galleries, theaters, and more. You also must to stop by the Old Capitol Farmers’ Market. Besides the food, there’s also plenty of entertainment. Grafton is just across the river in Illinois (where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi) and is less than an hours drive. Pere Marquette State Park is right there with great hiking trails, camping, and the lodge & conference center. There’s also plenty of events and festivals all year round.

ola Hawatmeh I was born and raised in New York. My favorite trend is fashion from around the world. Since culture is an influence in my fashion designs, I enjoy the fashion of other cultures as well. My mother has always inspired me to be confident. My grandmother was an inspiration growing up as she taught me to be strong and love God for all of his blessings. One obstacle that I had to overcome is creating a brand in a city where I am not from. There is a saying about anyone thinking to start a Business in St. Louis. If a business succeeds in St. Louis it will succeed anywhere in the country. As conservative as St. Louis is it not only welcomed me, but it helped me accomplish two successful companies with awards such as Most influential woman in Stl, and top business Woman in Stl 2014, and 2015. With the success of my sunglass line, 2015 my new project is Ola Style Kids glasses.

“Place, precision and time. The three great axes of Martell craftsmanship; an expertise and emotion passed from hand to hand since 1715.”

SYMBOLISING FRENCH REFINEMENT, MARTELL IS THE WORLD’S NO.1 XO (EXTRA OLD) COGNAC. THE OLDEST COGNAC HOUSE, MARTELL HAS DEVELOPED A UNIQUE KNOWHOW FOR CREATING TRULY OUTSTANDING COGNACS.

I

n the darkness and silence of the Martell cellars, the eaux-de-vie gently slumber. Days, months, years pass. Sleepy-eyed and lazy, time rolls on.

But a beautiful transformation is taking place inside the oak barrels. As a living material, the oak wood provides the eau-de-vie with its structure and handsome amber colour. Indeed, it is the wood that helps the eau-de-vie develop the last stage of its aromatic personality. Martell has always opted exclusively for barrels made of soft, fine-grain oak - its special feature being that it transmits soft, well-balanced aromas to the cognac eaux-de-vie, lending them notes of vanilla, dried fruit, red fruit, chutney and dried flowers. The oak wood used for Martell barrels comes from trees of the Tronçais style. This means that the oaks are planted closer together, leaving less light for each sapling and slowing their growth rate. The result is fine grain oak wood, called so since the rings representing growth are more compact. Barrels made from this type of wood give the eaux-de-vie aged within them a lighter and more delicate woody taste. “When transferred to the oak barrels, the eaux-de-vie are completely colourless. Only through contact with the rich oak do they take on their amber hue.” Along with the choice of wood, the type of barrel used also greatly affects the flavour of the eaux-de-vie. If made with completely new wood, barrels impart a strong wood taste, whereas Wbarrels that have previously held eau-de-vie, give a much subtler flavour. A final, major taste element is ‘toasting’ - a process where the inside of the barrels are gently burnt to help release the complex flavours within the oak. This affects the wood taste - the more they are burnt, the more prominent the wood flavour. At Martell the barrels are lightly toasted to preserve the flavour of the eaux-de-vie.

a Moscato: It’s just me, you, this Moscato.” Roscoe Dash could be singing about himself, but could also be singing about Cleopatra and Anthony ‘cause people have been drinking this grape for centuries. Moscato is the Italian word for Muscat, an ancient grape variety which is probably the oldest known out there. It comes from around the Mediterranean Sea where Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Turks coveted the wine and kept private stashes. When the Greeks and Romans fought and conquered lands, they took the vine with them, and spread the love far and wide. Moscato is not just a grape. It can also be used as a wine style. This wine is typically fragrant, sweet and slightly fizzy with low alcohol. The most famous Moscato of this style comes from Italy in the little town of Asti. You might see on some labels Moscato d’Asti, this just means Moscato from the town of Asti. You might also see Spumante on the label. Spumante means foam, so this wine will have more bubbles and won’t be as sweet. When choosing a Moscato at the store, the label will tell you where that wine was produced: California, Italy and Australia to name a few. It will sometimes have the year. Moscato should be

drunk young so if you see the year 2011 it might not be so great. You should buy the most recent year you can. Sometimes you will see another grape other than Muscat mentioned on the label like Trebbiano – this will make the wine taste slightly different. Moscato is great to drink by itself but it also goes well with food. As a rule of thumb, sweet wines pair well with salty or spicy foods. The sugar neutralizes the heat and lets other flavors shine thru. Here are just a few suggestions: BBQ like Sweet Baby Rays, honey baked ham, salty popcorn with maybe a dash of Tobasco or spicy Asian take out. Sweet wine is also great with desserts: cookies, fruit, chocolate, caramel and cheesecake. Moscato does not pair well with greens. Next time you have a romantic evening or a party with a group of friends, break open some Moscato and share some love! PEETEY WEESTRO

By: DeWarren Smith

The city of St. Louis is filled with so much talent and Peetey Weestro is among the top. Not only is Peetey in the midst of putting together a new LP entitled FUN, but he has also been honing his chops in front of the camera. He’s not filming a video, but a Television show created by Krayzie Bone of Bone Thugs N Harmony. DELUX Magazine was able to catch up with Weestro to discuss the latest goings and developments in the artist’s busy career. WHERE ARE YOU FROM IN ST. LOUIS? I’m from the Cochran projects. My mother was from the projects and my father from Kinloch. ARE YOU HAVING A LOT OF FUN FILMING BACKSTAGE? Ah yeah man it’s going real good a lot of good people are working on the project. WHO ARE ALL INVOLVED? AND WHAT IS THE SHOW ABOUT? Rockwell Knuckles, Vega Sills, Aloha Misho, Jibbs, and Krayzie Bone just to name a few. It’s about four hip hop artist from St. Louis from the streets that go on to get a record deal, and it shows the things that they went through to the things that they are going through. They based it out of St. Louis but it’s loosely based on the events in Bone Thugs N Harmony’s life and career. Do they expect it to be picked up by a major network or will it be webseries? How are they treating it? We have a couple networks looking at it and it’s looking good. ARE YOU ACTUALLY ACTING OR IS IT REALITY BASED? Is not reality at all, we are playing characters. It’s scripted. WHAT’S THE NAME OF YOUR CHARACTER AND WHAT IS HE LIKE? My character’s name is Anthony “Boss” Bossanova and he’s basically the hot head of the group. He doesn’t want to leave the street life alone and my partners are trying to keep me together.

DESCRIBE FOR ME THE EXPERIENCE. HOW WERE YOU PICKED? WHAT IS LIKE WORKING WITH ROCKWELL WHO IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE RAPPERS, ALOHA WHO IS A BEAUTIFUL LADY, AND JIBBS, WHO WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH? Well the director Craig Thomas - he actually saw a couple of my videos, and he was like, “Yeah that dude right therrr, we need him.” I came in and did my thing and from there it’s been history. The people, Rocky, Jibbs, Aloha, they are good people. I rock with them hard. They keep me motivated and keep me going as we plan our characters. We all just basically bounce off each other. SO YOU ACTUALLY CAME IN AND READ LINES? Yeah, it was a real audition. We went in, and got into character and everything. LET’S GET BACK THE LP! WHILE YOU ARE PUTTING IT TOGETHER, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE? Well it’s going to be different from my other projects, Eye’s Don’t Lie 1 & Eye’s Don’t Lie 2. I’m going to get more personal about my life, be more aggressive with my flow and the things that I’m talking about. WILL YOU MAINTAIN THE SAME CAMP OR ARE YOU STEPPING OUTSIDE THE BOX TOO? I’m stepping all the way outside the box with this one. Everything is going to be different with this project. CAN YOU GIVE US YOUR FAVORITE LINE OR BAR FROM ONE OF THE JOINTS ON FUN? Yeah, “Started on the sidewalk right there in the projects/ where dreams are born and where some dreams die at…” -Peetey Weestro AND HOW ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE BAR FROM ANYONE ELSE? “I had to hustle my back to the wall ashy knuckles. Pockets filled with a lot of lent not a cent…” -Jay Z (Renegade) Make sure you keep up with Weestro on Instagram: @peetey_weestro

LIVIN’ LIFE RETRO Written by: DeWarren Smith

TRANSITION DAY | MIXTAPE |

I

t was 4:30pm when the rap duo entered the conference room at Derrty Studios to sit down before returning to the studio to bang out more material. Exuding high energy Shad, pronounced (Shod) and a more pensive looking Tab approached the table ready to discuss their newest project Transition Day and plans for the future. The success of their latest project has been expansive. Well supported by throngs of female fans and party goers, it is a certified success. If you are unfamiliar with JGE Retro, then allow Delux to introduce you. Their sound is a clever mixture of many styles. Some of those styles even reach back into the past. Take their homage to Kris Kross, “Warm it Up (Intro).” They also possess a more up-tempo, totally TURNT vibe in tracks like, “8/11 Chains.” The track is blazing, the hook grabs you and won’t let go, and the lines are hard. The execution on Transition Day is high caliber from its production to its lyrical artistry. There are a solid number of hits on the 10 track offering including the first single, “I Could Neva,” which fans may recall hearing a bit on the hit reality show Nellyville on BET. The audio version of the single already has over 200k combined views on Youtube alone, and you can be sure the video (which Tab aka Lil Shawn assures me will be shot in St. Louis) will do over a million views…easily. “You want to know how it started?” Shad asked. “This dude called me up, geeked and was like, ‘Bruh, my Uncle just got some recording equipment!’”

WTab interjects with a reminiscent grin, “Yeah, it was my younger uncle, not Nelly.” Shad continues, “He said bruh! And I was like well what you wanna do?” The next thing you know Shad shows up they both began writing and recording on the spot. The year was 2006 and what emerged from that session was TFB, Tha Flyboyyz. It would be January 2010 when Tab would have the first release with his Round 1 Mixtape. In his video, “I Make Money” it was easy to see that Tab had a passion for music. A few months later it would be Shad’s turn. Shad grew up in the industry. His father is a manager for the St. Lunatics. Under the direction of his mentor, he released his first mixtape, I’m Home, in March 2010. Filled with high energy and bars like, “I got my eyes on the prize/the dude stay focused/ trying to get a loaf on 15th and Locust/… /plus I’m in charge of my own little team/I’m a boss now/ my turn E.N.T. “/. Undoubtedly, he was home, as you can hear Tab say on the track that he has to pull Shad out of the studio or else he would never leave. Their music is just fun. The energy, the lyrics, and even the delivery. It is fun by design. Fun is what Retro is all about. To describe their effect on the listeners of their music be they young or old, Shad says, “You remember a time in like 1999 and 2000 when everything was just good; the music, the fashion, what people was doin’… they just made it feel cool.”

Collectively, the group is on a mission. As they describe it: “To build a group better than the best who ever done it and to kill the game in different aspects.” Both understand they have big shoes to fill but JGE RETRO are students of the game and have learned their lessons well. The two appreciate the importance of branding and controlling it methodically. Tab tells me they do not just refer to themselves as rap artists but artists in general and that staying true is important to them. While speaking on the subject of realness, Tab elaborates on his feelings about the BET show. “Of course it’s different when you have a camera following you around all day, but some things we’ d say with the camera off you can’t say with the camera on. It’s real different. You got to get real comfortable with it. But the thing that makes it easy is just be you. Don’t try to be nothing you ain’t - just be you.” You can expect a lot from JGE Retro. They are an extremely talented pair of artists. They stay in the studio, according to their manager Camille, yet there are no immediate plans to put out an album. Both are excited for the future and what it holds, and they have good reason to be excited. And where do they hope to be five years from now? To be a success as icons and for their JGE family and family overall to be taken care of. Tab elaborates, “I feel like if it’s only me and him with the money, then that is no fun.” And fun is what JGE Retro is all about.
