“Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, this time more wisely.”- HENRY FORD Truer words have never been spoken. This issue was a very challenging test of will and dedicaton and it turned out absolutley perfect. If you had to chose a theme song what song would it be? AINT NOBODY EFF’IN WITH MY CLIQUE!!!! (kanye verse) No need for explaination. Team DELUX is awesome!

1 2 3

Lose Yourself by Eminem. Every time i hear this song it reminds me to stay focused and to not entertain distractions. Theres not enough room at the top so only the disciplined, strong and ambitious will occupy that space.

What was the worsT song you have ever gotten busy to? LOL... Hilarious.... Not really sure... I consider myself a self proclaimed *Porn Star*... lmao I make my own music!!! Maybe I should release a mixtape!!

Uuugh. Lol Swag/Surf by soulja boy tellem. Naw im jus kidding. I actually havent had a bad selection during that special time:)

Your mix tape is entitled “Yellow Tape”… What Inspires you?

10

Well I dont have a mixtape... but inspiration comes from all around me. Family first. I am a dedicated Husband & Father. The hours I put into keeping my house happy is not for my own self glorification but to leave a legacy for my kids and a worry free life for my wife. A scream of “daaadddyyy” from my kids after a hard day at the office makes it all worth it!

Well. Yellowtape is self explanitory. Im killing all lanes in hip hop. Music, style, performance and swag. Whoever feel any way about that should, well it doesnt matter. Im here. I aint going any where any time soon so the haters should just get comfortable. Ive been doing this for a long time. Its my moment. Its my dream. Its my time. Bitchessssss! Lol

DELUX THOUGHTS

8

Eight has always been a nice round number. It is even prettier when placed before karat and after the word priceless. Everyone knows that a priceless eight-karat ring or any ring larger than a golf ball is guarantees of a successful marriage. Ask yourself what would be the problem? Any girl would be happy to have the ring of Kim Kardashian’s dreams. That means 20.5 karats of happiness, right? A great ring means that the future husband wants to show his future wife that he can shower here with the finer things in life. But hold the bagette, has anyone talked about who’s going to do the dishes or the laundry? What about nights out with the boys’ or the girls’? Or even who has control of the remote? It’s the small things, weighing more than the price of a karat, that gives the marriage substance and what matters most. I would be remiss not to give the totally distracted couples, who are more worried about the dress and the gifts for the bridal and groom’s parties, some words of wisdom. For the sake of stronger marriages and the voice of reason within the midst of confusion, here goes what is hopefully considered clarity. Marriage is a union between two individuals. It is where “me” becomes “we.” Don’t get blinded by pomp and circumstance. When the wedding planner writes the Thank You note and the honeymoon pictures are no longer receiving comments on Facebook, the marathon has already started. The path to Happily Ever After sets in and the work begins. Don’t try to change the person you married. That is whom you fell in love and to whom you said I Do. Work together to make all that glitter, solid gold. - Jenny Triplett

DELUX REALITY

TIME FOR A REAL CHANGE Reality Column by Mark Bland

So the elections came and went after a very tough and well fought campaign on both sides. Even though the dirty came out near the end through debates, in the end the people of our country made another valiant attempt to vote who they thought was best into the White House. But see...this is where my problem starts with all of it. I feel it is time to do away with the electoral college. Here me out... Since its inception, the electoral college was designed to give people a more equal representation in the voting process for the White House. States with fewer people couldn’t be trounced for no apparent reason and were given a set amount of votes based off their population in the state. California gets 55 votes while Missouri gets 10 and Maine gets 4. Those votes all go towards one candidate of a two party system that the electoral college reinforces to some extent. And that’s where the problem starts for me. We are given the choices of the lesser of two evils because of the financial cache’s the two front runners have. As a radio host of a political show, I have people representing all sides of the process coming on my show to discuss their ideal candidates. And this year was a FLUB OF MASS PROPORTIONS! All of the conservative based people I talked with this year, for the most part, DID NOT want Mitt Romney. Many of them would have rather had Gary Johnson or Ron Paul. But they got Mitt Romney and that is when their reason to vote changed for the worse. Since they knew their candidate was not running, they were going to do everything in their mind to justify “Plan B” (as I like to call it). Plan B is simple...if you can’t beat them join them. And we all know the harm in that process. You are stuck in a spot you don’t want to be in, but you come up with reasons for why you are cool with it (even though

you are seething with anger and distrust inside). You say to yourself, “It’s OK, I a voting AGAINST Obama, not for Romney!” And that is where I think this has all taken a change for the worse. We now have people voting against their own best judgment (even if it doesn’t agree with yours) out of SPITE. No one likes a person who is spiteful and it seems like the conservative based parties (especially whats left of the Tea Party) have bitter, seething and spiteful people in spades. So we need a change! A change for the better, where we vote by popular vote. One person, one vote. No more California or Ohio decides for the rest of the country. If the country truly is fed up, they will vote one by one to remove the sitting president, or they will elect to keep them. See politicians (especially conservatives) love a sure bet. A state that is locked down and ready to vote completely one way or another. That way, they can dissect and use their media power to influence those states around them. Some of those states might be more borderline in their beliefs at the time and you can sway them based off what their neighbors do. In the end, no one wins on either side but the guy running for the spot in the White House. Most people leave disenfranchised and it will take a least 4 more years to get the bad taste out of there mouth. I just hope financially and physically we are a better country 4 years from now than we are currently. Or maybe, we are writing our final good-byes anyway cause of the End of the World! Mark Bland is a radio show host of The Q on 1280 KYRO AM radio, a CBS News Affiliate based out of St. Louis, MO metro area. You can find and download more examples of Mark’s musings at www.theqnow. com . 13

REVENGE OF THE NERDS x GEEK'D UP CLOTHING

WRAP IT UP | SHELIA JOHNSON COLLECTION

Perhaps best known as a producer and philanthropist, Shelia Johnson’s design debut stemmed from a longstanding passion for photography. After beginning to take pictures with a Polaroid camera in high school, she learned to develop her own film. This classic foundation evolved into the use of advanced digital technology to capture images. Using photographs she shot in exotic locales such as Uganda, Rwanda and Haiti, Johnson uses scarves as her canvas to relay her distinct point of view:

GEEK’D UP is a fresh new clothing brand coming out of Saint Louis. The brand was founded in 2010 by Kyle Griffin and Dion Johnson to target the growing subculture of skate boarders and urban backpackers. Inspired by his love for the fashion movement known as urban street wear, Kyle said he came up with the idea after watching Revenge of the Nerds a 1984 comedy classic about a group of college nerds trying to stop the constant abuse and harassment of campus jocks. GEEK’D UP has expanded to reach a market of young urban professional men who represent the creative and edgy side of Saint Louis. With it’s nerdy glasses and classic bow tie as the trademark logo, GEEK’D UP plans to expand it’s product line to include women and children’s clothes and accessories. “We are striving to be a brand that creates trends not copy them.” www.geekdupclothing.com instagram: Geekdupclothing_ceo

“When I’m behind the lens, I can express myself... It’s been thrilling to share my passion for nature and for my philanthropic work by translating what I see and feel into luxurious, wearable art.” The venture, simply titled Sheila Johnson Collection, launched for the Holiday 2012/Resort 2013 season with “Interludes,” which uses a rich color palette that enlivens the seasonal landscapes. Close stills of vibrant flowers, as in Carita and Felicity, embody a bright optimism whilst moodier winter scenes, as in Solace, revel in the blue-tinged glow of fresh snowfall. Johnson’s scarves boast skillful duality. Unfolded, the scarves present us with a sort of utopian realism. Yet when tied, the recognizable portraits of nature blend into abstractions of color. To drape such a piece around one’s neck is an optical illusion of sorts. - Maya Bett www.sheliajohnsoncollection.com

SCHLAFLY CHRISTMAS ALE

Our Christmas Ale is a warming winter ale that blends the spices of the season with sweet caramel malt. Orange peel, juniper berries, ginger root, cardamom and cloves are added for spiciness. We use honey in the fermentation process, which raises the ABV without producing too much heat from the alcohol content. Many breweries produce richer, higher alcohol beers for the winter holiday season, bolder than their year-round offerings. The inspiration for this beer came from spiced holiday beverages such as wassail and mulled wines. Around the holidays, the sweet and spicy aromas, not to mention the booze, in such libations tend to smooth the rougher edges of enjoying each other’s company and spreading goodwill.

WEWE LOVE DE BUB-LEY In 1811, just a year after they were married, Pierre Nicolas Perrier and Rose Adéla de Jouët released the first bottling of Perrier-Jouët champagne. Even at 200 it is among the youngest of the champagne brands that make Americans giddy: Moët-Chandon (makers of Dom Perignon), Veuve Clicquot and Roederer (makers of Cristal) are 18th century institutions. When it comes to taste and quality, though, Perrier-Jouët can easily go bubble-for-bubble with its older compatriots. And when it came to celebrating its two-hundredth year, if you ask the house itself, it might have outdone them. It is a conversation that begins with the Perrier-Jouët Bi-Centenaire sculpture and that will last nearly 100 years. And it involves lots and lots of champagne...

CAMP LO “LUCHINI” There’s ONLY one group in the entire history of hip hop that I love but I don’t know what the hell they’re talking about 99% of the time! And that group is Camp Lo. I remember first seeing these cat’s video for “Coolie High” and thinking these cats are dope plus the beat was SICK! Did these dudes sample Janet Jackson’s “Funny How Time Flies?!?!?!” Word? And when my dude DJ Titan premiered Ski’s paradise remix to “Cooley High” THAT’S when I knew I was gonna be fans of these dudes. So, as usual I’m at the station opening mail (any hip hop that dropped between ‘93-’97, 9 times outta 10 I heard it at WEAA cause I opened ALL of the mail so I could get to the new 12” first) and I come across the new 12” for Camp Lo’s newest song “Luchini” and I remember throwing it on the 1200 and being floored! THIS beat was even better than their last two! I started calling everybody’s office telling them to get in the studio NOW! “Luchini” is what you call a PERFECT hip hop song and not too many MC’s/Groups can honestly say they have a perfect hip hop song in their catalog. In fact, I don’t know if there’s ANYONE alive who doesn’t LOVE “Luchini!”

After discussions with many friends and supporters, my family and my pastor, I have decided to run for Mayor. I want to take the experience and skills developed during my 13 years at the Board of Aldermen and continue to make a contribution to St. Louis. In St. Louis, everyone in our city has something to offer and every neighborhood Matters.

L

ewis Reed has spent over two decades serving the people of St. Louis in elected office, civic and charitable involvement. He is currently the President of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen and serves as the head of the legislative branch of city government. Reed is the first African-American ever to be elected to this position. In his time in office, Lewis has championed many causes including founding Bike St. Louis and the rebirth of Washington Avenue. He is responsible for passing legislation addressing crime prevention, creating opportunities for atrisk youth, environmental sustainability, as well as neighborhood and economic development. Prior to becoming President, Reed served as Alderman for the 6th Ward for eight years. During his time as Alderman, he drafted and passed the first neighborhood-based TIF in city history, created over 100 miles of interconnected bike routes throughout the city and the region, added hundreds of new housing units throughout his ward and hundreds of millions of dollars in new development, sponsored legislation and worked to create development plans resulting in over $1.7 billion of development. In 2007, President Reed was selected by the Aspen Institute in a national search for the very 24

Before entering public service, Reed had a successful career in the private sector. He was the Director of Networks and Telecommunications for the Edison Brothers Stores’ worldwide operations. He also was the Manager of Data Networks for SSM Health Businesses, where he managed multi-million dollar budgets and developed technology solutions to meet business goals. The Innovator

Larry Blue Larry Blue is the quintessential man! In addition to being a pioneer in the field of pharmaceutical sales, he is one of the founders of the St. Louis Chapter of the National Sales Network and a partner at Lola, one of the hottest places in area for food and entertainment. Born and raised in the St. Louis area, Blue has used his ability to network to establish deep and diverse roots within various segments of the community. He is a sales pioneer in the field of pharmaceutical sales. A veteran of more than 12 years in the industry, Blue was astonished to find the lack of diversity within the field. The consummate salesman, Blue saw the lack of diversity as an opportunity. He made a point of seeking out African-American sales representatives and sharing contact information to build a personal database of contacts within the field. His networking paid off for him and others when he used his contacts to help a young lady he was mentoring to enter the field. His mentor, who also saw the lack of diversity that Blue experienced, worked with him to diversify the sales profession. They developed a plan to help people learn how to master the interview process and have a better understanding of the employment process. Two years later, the St. Louis chapter of the National Sales Network was born. In the beginning, the St. Louis chapter had approximately 12 people and faced an uphill battle to prove to the national office it had the desire, strength and strategy to be a success. With Blue involved, the chapter’s charter was never in question. The mission of the organization is to develop a network for African-Americans to have careers in sales management and overall career development. One of its most successful programs is the Backpack to Briefcase program that helps college students make the transition from the college world to the corporate world. The program’s success, under the leadership of Blue, has led to the unprecedented winning of two consecutive Chapter of the Year awards. When Blue is not closing a major sale, he is working to insure his investment in Lola continues to grow. As a partner in the establishment, his focus is to utilize his sphere of influence in sales and community work to spread the word about Lola and to make it a St. Louis landmark. He envisions it as a place for people to visit for brunch, happy hour, or dinner. In fact, Blue can often be found at Lola holding court or enjoying one of the many menu items. In work and in play, Larry Blue is about his business. And his business is sales. And Lola.

Lisa west With out promotion your business cant survive. Lisa West owner of WestOne-- proves just that promo works!

AS TOLD TO Kandie W PHOTOGRAPHY BY McArthur

Q: Tell me about your business? What do you do? To put it plainly, my business is promotions. We promote products for large companies to consumers and work with them to grow their market share in key demographics. Our mission is to provide outstanding customer service that enhances, integrates and extends each individual clients business objectives by ensuring a high level of commitment training standards and qualifications for each member of our promotional staff. Q: How did you get started in the industry? I still remember how it all began. I was attending the Seagram’s Gin live tour in 2001 at the old Ambassador in what was formerly known as Northland shopping center. I wore all black and wound up looking like one of the promotions models because all black was their required uniform that night. During that evening I was approached by a Marketing manager of a major corporation. Much to my surprise, after what seemed like a brief conversation she asked that I work with her company doing promotions. I accepted and the rest as they say, is history Q: what advice would you give to someone trying to getting started in promotions? In order to be successful in this industry being a networker is very important. It is also important to be open to criticism. I realized long ago that I don’t always have the best idea and I always hire people that are good at what they do. There is nothing wrong with having a team of people that are smarter than you in some ways because success to me is always that of a team rather than an individual effort. It all works together for the benefit of the project and being a part of a team that is success oriented is how I have been able to realize true success in my career. It’s not easy but the trick is to make it look like it. Q: What was your one great memory as the owner of West One? When I received a phone call from the president of a multi-million dollar corporation seeking my advice and possible partnership in business. I was at the office regrouping after a long night and a busy morning. My phone rang. I answered in what was probably the most unenthusiastic way possible. I said “Lisa speaking” which is my customary greeting to callers and much to my surprise I hear this voice on the other end and it was the CEO! I almost dropped the phone after he introduced himself. After I collected myself we talked, and during that exchanged he basically told me that he heard about my company and possibly wanted to do business with me. I was so excited when we hung up the phone. I felt like at that time, all the hard work, late nights and early mornings were finally beginning to pay off. West One Promotions was on the map. Thank you Jesus!!! Q: When did you know you made it? How a person measures success to me is a personal thing, and I measure my success by the joy that I can bring to the people that matter in my life. My mother, my father and my three siblings along with my Shalom Church family have been great supporters. When did I know that I had made it? I will let you know when I do. *wink* I have been very fortunate to work with great people and some awesome doors have been opened for me throughout my career. I just get up early and work hard all day. I take good care of myself and the people that I employ. I give thanks to God and stay before Him seeking direction and divine intervention in all of my business and personal matters. I really do walk by faith.

I get questions all the time from executives, celebrities and more on simple things like “how can I jazz up this suit,” “I have a presentation or performance today and want to be viewed as powerful, how do I present myself,” “I have a media interview today, can you give me some tips,” “Can you help me reorganize my wardrobe and find those pieces that fit me.” Q. -Describe your own personal style? My style is very classic classy chic with a hint of trendy/romantic! I like to buy pieces that I can wear no matter what the trend is. I love love LOVE color; but I must admit that black is my favorite!! Everyone needs a “signature piece” and for me, that’s a jacket. I love wearing anything with a jacket. Even if I am running errands on the weekend, you’ll probably catch me in a two piece matching jogging suit or jeans with a jacket! Q. What do you love most about what you do? I get to assist people with channeling and converting their inner beauty outwardly! I love to see them smile, hold their head up higher and call me back to say IT WORKED!!! That’s rewarding :) I love seeing the end result when I’m shopping for someone. I can’t begin to describe the feeling I get when I see them looking incredibly handsome or absolutely fabulous in those pieces!! Q. Anything you want to share with people who are not sure if they would benefit from your services? I believe there are ideas and concepts waiting on us to embrace them! The things that we do well can usually lead us to our next opportunity. What is it that you do well and really enjoy doing? Write it down and spend some time dreaming BIG! That’s where you’ll find your passion and purpose! I may be able to assist with this process by helping people discover their true passion and by making sure they also look the part.

L.A.C.E ME NATURAL

CANDERA WALKER L.A.C.E. owner, Candy Walker, shares her entrepreneurial journey After years of researching natural ingredients, reading blogs, watching tons of YouTube videos, and trying her homemade products on her own hair and skin, Candera (Candy) Walker decided it was time to launch her own natural-ingredient-based product line. How did you decide to become an entrepreneur and why this line of business? What was/is your motivation? I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As a young girl growing up in the Bahamas, it was just in my nature, as everyone I was surrounded by had something going on for them. It was kind of a survival thing. My parents are both Jack-and-Jill-of-all-trades. My dad is a teacher, handyman, carpenter, mechanic...you name it, and he did it. My mother was a stay-at-home-mom until I graduated high school and she experimented with ingredients for food, skin, and hair while also doing interior decorating. I decided to start Ladies Always Create Excitement, LLC (L.A.C.E.) in 2008 after doing volunteer work for a few years with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Girls, Inc. I wanted to continue to reach out to young women and teenage girls in hopes of helping them remain empowered. At the time I was also researching natural hair and skin care. I remember having so many conversations with young girls and women while volunteering, and a lot of it had to do with their appearance and what they felt they had to look like to be accepted. My motivation is to continue to encourage them to be themselves and love themselves naturally, while offering quality products to promote healthy skin and hair of all types.

AS TOLD TO TIFFANY SHAWN TPHOTOGRAPHY BY McArthur

What goals do you have for your business? I plan to expand the line to include more products for men and children as well. I’m working on getting into some retail locations as well as setting up a YouTube channel to offer tutorials on how to use my products as well as different basic styles, hair and skin care tips, and health and fitness tips. I am planning on attending more events for natural hair and well as speaking engagements in the community.

30

How do you manage LACE and your other priorities? I work a full time job in addition to running my own business. It’s a lot of work and takes a lot out of you, however, when the results of my hard labor pays off, I feel blessed and grateful that I have what it takes to keep going. As far as prioritizing, my family comes first; I have a wonderful fiancé and soon to be 3-year-old daughter, who is my greatest joy. My fiancé and I work great as a team. He understands what it takes to keep L.A.C.E successful, is very supportive, and we share a lot of the responsibilities around the home, even if it means me waking up at 5am to cook dinner for the evening. The biggest thing is having a clear to-do list in order of importance and understanding that you can’t get everything done in one day. You also have to take time out for yourself in order to regroup, some days are crazier and chaotic than others but it all gets done. I remember to laugh and have fun while working hard. he international jetsetter lifestyle is something few musical artists get to enjoy. However, for elite artists like five-time Grammy nominee, B.o.B., a life of travel abroad is par for the course. With a fan base that spreads throughout Asia and Europe, B.o.B. has used his music as a portal to the international hip-hop community. He has traveled extensively to bring his exciting brand of music to the masses. Since before the 2010 release of his debut album, “B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray,” the Decatur, Georgia native had been blazing a trail throughout many of the major metropolitans of the world sharing his exciting brand of hip-hop. From London to Paris to Tokyo, B.o.B. has been to places he never dreamed he would see. “When you are an aspiring artist and you are making music, you are just hoping to get a record deal.” He ended up with a major record deal (Grand Hustle/Rebel Rock/Atlantic Records) and much, much more! For starters, his debut album gave him the opportunity to collaborate with other elite artists including Bruno Mars and Eminem. Those collaborations placed B.o.B., born Bobby Ray Simmons, Jr., on the road to success and international fame. He has used that success to cross cultural lines and to reach out to his fans across the globe. “Traveling gives you ideas and teaches you things that you can take home and incorporate into your life to make your life easier. You learn to appreciate architecture, culture, the arts and cuisine more.” His travels have given him a more universal perspective of life. With a more universal perspective, B.o.B. has become a more seasoned traveler and an expert of sorts on having a global lifestyle. He counts Paris and Tokyo as two of the best places to live while he sees Amsterdam and Toronto as two of the best places to visit. For the sexiest beaches, he recommends anywhere in France and India; and for the fashion conscious, he recommends London and Tokyo. And even though he loves to travel and appreciates his time spent globetrotting, B.o.B. still loves the comfort of home. “I am like Dorothy… there is no place like home. The 25-year-old musician may be best known as Beyonce’s little sister, but recently she’s been gaining notoriety for her adventurous sartorial choices. We asked the budding style star about her favorite local hangouts and new album.

PROFILED

SOLANGE KNOWLES AS TOLD TO RACHEL LEWINTER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY BET

You recently made the move from L.A. to Brooklyn. How are you adjusting? I love it. My entire family lives here, and [since] my niece [Blue Ivy] was born, I love being close to her. Did you get any advice from friends and family about moving to New York? Honestly, everyone really frightened me. I had sort of a Texas hillbilly [attitude] about the subway and walking [everywhere] and layering [for the cold weather]. But I’m a tough girl—I lived in Idaho, and if I can survive there, I can survive anywhere. What’s one of the biggest differences that you’ve noticed? People who live in L.A. don’t like to leave their homes because they have so much space. They have the nice kitchens and a cook and a pool. When you live in L.A., there is a sense of isolation in terms of raising a family. What are some of your favorite things to do in the city? I definitely have that sort of Brooklyn vibe of “oh, crossing the bridge is sooo far,” so we stay pretty local in terms of our restaurants, movie theaters and bowling alleys. But really, I love eating out. Some of my favorite new spots in the neighborhood are Buttermilk Channel and Frankies [457 Spuntino]. I’ve definitely packed on the pounds since moving here. Where are some of your favorite places to shop? Opening Ceremony is my number one favorite place to shop here. It’s the only place I’ll shop in New York with my son. All of the sales people are so cool; the music is great; it’s just like a big fun house, so he stays entertained. I like the Barneys [co-op] in Brooklyn because it’s very laid-back and chill; there’s not as much hustle and bustle as the one in the city. Aside from that, I literally buy everything online. Once I had my son, I stopped shopping in stores because it’s not an easy process to try on clothes—and I’m not an impulsive buyer. I need to do the dance in front of the mirror, the whole nine yards. What’s your favorite place to shop online? I love Net-a-Porter (netaporter.com), but it’s a gift and a curse. Living in New York has made [the site] that much more dangerous because I have my settings set to New York Premier, which means [purchases] come the same day. It is such an addictive drug, to be able to wake up in the morning, order a pair of shoes, and they are at your door four hours later. I made the biggest mistake of introducing that to my sister, and she’s just been out of control...out of control. It’s just out of control. just makes wearable, on. DELUX Magazine V3.9 | 37

A5 Tips New Year, A New You on Elevating Your Image in 2013 Shuntae Shields Ryan helps those who may need to polish their professional image, establish presence and learn how to exude radiance, confidence and poise benefit greatly from having an Image Coach on their team.

T

his is the time of year where many people, including myself, are making New Year’s Resolutions or creating Vision Lists for where they see their lives headed in 2013. Allow me to suggest that you add yourself to that list! Make yourself a priority in the new year by stepping up your personal and/ or professional image. That could mean different things to different people, depending on who you are and where you are in your life AND stepping up your image should affect both your personal and professional life. Why not start today? Here are a few achievable tips to becoming a new you. 1. Have Confidence - In yourself and in your abilities. If you don’t believe in yourself, who will? And, how will you sell yourself to others if you don’t believe in you? Never compare yourselves to others, only compare yourself with yourself. You are your greatest competition! Know your strengths and weaknesses - What are YOU good at? Keep a written list of those strengths, even study them if you need to. Don’t linger on your weaknesses, however if needed, it’s ok to goal to conquer those one at a time. When you are presented with

an opportunity to do new things, don’t shy away from them but embrace them with open arms as this gives your visibility opportunities. This is a way to build your resume, learn new things and build enough strengths that the weaknesses will eventually fade and you’ll no longer concentrate on them. However, reach for the stars and be open minded. Stand tall, head high and watch your body language when interacting with people. I have a saying that I use, “Even when I’m feeling less than confident, no one else would know it.” 2. Stand Out, be bold and get noticed - You’ve heard the saying, “Dress for the Position you want” - Well this applies to many areas of our lives. I would add “Dress for the Position you want...at all times” If you’re applying for a job, internship, entry level or management - corporate, non profit or retail or simply looking for a career change - stand out from the rest of the crowd with your attire and look, head to toe. You want to be polished, always wear a suit (ladies) or jacket and tie (men), accessorize and light on the fragrance. You may go in for an entry level position but wow them enough with your presence that they put you on the front line. If you’re going to a social function, on a date or just to the mall or grocery store - jazz it up a little and always be consistent with your presence. When you dress better, you feel better! It makes you sit up a bit straighter and you’re motivated to conquer the day! Even in your everyday life, strive to stand out from the crowd and look like a VIP (very

important person). When you go out on the weekend, do a little something extra to perk up your look or image as well. 3. Get Organized - Spend a little extra time in the morning or at night. Coordinating your attire for the upcoming work week is critical to stepping up and maintaining your image. When you roll out of bed and are rushed, sometimes that comes across in your appearance for the day as well. However, when you are able to plan out your work week attire, you’re able to accessorize it correctly and add that special touch to it. For men, this could be coordinating that tie and shirt or that sports jacket and vest. For women, finding the right jewelry to match or scarf enhancements or shoes and handbag even. Part of enhancing your image is maintainance and it’s important that once you decide there’s a certain way you’d like to look everyday, keep that up. 4. Self Maintenance - Taking care of yourself is key. Add new pieces to your wardrobe, get a mani or pedi, new hairstyle or hair cut, start applying light makeup or just commit to being a more consistent you. Showing up the same way every day so that people know who you are and expect to see that same person! “You look nice today” should be a comment you want to receive everyday just not on occasion. A good way to gauge what it is that you need to change is based on the comments you receive and how regularly you receive them. You could also dig a bit deeper and commit to being nicer, smile more and laugh often or paying someone a compliment each day. 5. Remain positive - Optimism is key - Take a moment or ten minutes at the top of each day to positively position yourself to have a great day and expect great opportunities to come your way! This might involve writing down and reading positive affirmations, organizing your day, writing out the goals you’d like to achieve by the end of the day, end of they year, etc. Rejection might come but if you’re equipped with positivity you’ll know it’ll all come together for you soon.

When OutKast started making records back in the mid-‘90s, Andre “3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton looked like some ordinary kats. “The budgets weren’t that big at the time,” chuckled Big Boi. “ So a clean pair of socks, flip-flops and tracksuits was the attire.” As OutKast became legendary, their fashion sense frew more ambitious. The duo’s last great album, 2003’s Speakerboxx/The Love Below, features a song called “Bowtie” that summed up the transformation: “ Crocodile on my feet / Fox fur on my back / Bow tie ‘round my neck / That’s why they call me the gansta mack.” So when DELUX decided to run a spread on bow ties, we knew we had to reach out to the KINGS. “When you have on a bow tie, the bow tie commands respect,” Big Boi says. “And if you got a bow tie on, you gotta be a bad mother*%&$# to have a bowtie on. Especially if its not a clip on and you tied it yourself.”

JASON FLETCHER A man of humble beginings, Jason Fletcher keeps his eyes on the prize and his clients in the money. by Winnie Caldwell Photography: McArthur

R

Respectful. Honest. Loyal. Trustworthy. These four words perfectly describe former NFL player turned sports agent, Jason Fletcher. Jason Fletcher was an NFL undrafted free agent from 1998–2000, having opportunities with several NFL teams and in 2000 and 2001 played in the arena football league with the Los Angeles Avengers. Opportunities soon expanded into a different outlet for Fletcher. Not letting any criticism get the best of him, Fletcher has exceeded the expectation of the naysayers and has dominated the NFL industry as a Sports Agent. Little did the naysayers know, that they actually add to the drive Fletcher has held for these twelve years to continue his successful career.

DELUX: What is it like being a sports agent? Fletcher: (Pauses) It is an emotional rollercoaster. Point, Blank, Period. I have the joy of seeing my clients successful and I have the opportunities to help different communities. Also keep in mind there are two types of sports agents, those that talk about it, or be about it. If you haven’t represented a 1st round draft pick, you are irrelevant. DELUX: You’ve been an inspiration to many. What inspires you? Fletcher: Being able to interact with NFL general managers, owners, and the head of copersonnel. Why? They keep me sharp and on point in the business. I am inspired to take over, yet also to keep doing what I am doing. I have a great reputation, I am very thorough and I represent my clients well. DELUX: Tell me about the joy that is in your life right now - what is happiness to you? Fletcher: Seeing my family and clients’ family happy makes

me happy. Winning makes me happy. Overall success on the field and off the field brings me happiness. DELUX: What inspirational books have you read that really made a difference in your life? Fletcher: The Collective Bargaining Agreement, Journey to success, anything written by Johnny Cochran, all of Cornell West’s books, Keeping the Faith, and my favorite book of all time is Mr. Untouchable. DELUX: What struggles have you had to face becoming a sports agent? Fletcher: The biggest struggle is dealing with black on black racism. That’s the largest obstacle. Politics fall right behind that but racism within blacks versus blacks in the industry is the biggest struggle of the business. Negotiating contracts is the easy part (laughs).

DELUX: What advice do you have for young men looking into sports industry? Fletcher: College courses will not prepare you for this industry. The best thing you can do to prepare yourself is research before deciding to get into it. Also you must bring something to the table to be considered for anything. Do your homework thoroughly inside and out. Learn the facts. DELUX: What was a turning point in your life? Fletcher: When my parents and brother believed enough in me to represent the Fletcher family. In 2001 at the young age of 24 I was given the opportunity to represent my brother Jamar Fletcher who was selected 26 overall by the Miami Dolphins. DELUX: What do you hope to achieve in the next 5 years? Fletcher: To continue doing business as it is now and not to become lazy nor content. To remain grounded, focused and hungry. And to never become a regular agent.

Fletcher: I have always been humble, though now I am even more humble. It hasn’t changed me much actually. Because of my brothers and my father, I have remained the same. DELUX: How do you get through the daily experience of being a sports agent? Fletcher: Working out. I am a gym rat. I love MMA. That is my second passion next to football. Training and working out is my escapism.

“Always be honest, respectful, loyal and trustworthy in your dealings.”

DELUX: What have you learned from the sports industry? Fletcher: In most NFL organizations there’s no loyalty. Young athletes need to realize this is a business. What Have You Done For Me Lately is the motto of this industry. For instance Payton Manning was cut even though he brought so much to the industry. There is definitely no loyalty. DELUX: How has this experience with being a sports agent changed you?

DELUX: Who helped you see this was the path you wanted to take in life? Fletcher: A combination of my family and myself. They always believed in me and supported me. No one else thought that I could be successful. I received so much negativity from other agents. Me starting out as an agent at 24, an ex-athlete and being a black man, were all strikes against me. I’ve exceeded a lot of people’s expectations in this business. Having that support from family and myself enabled that. DELUX: How has your life changed since working in the sports industry? Fletcher: It hasn’t changed my life. It has opened my eyes from being a ball player that most agents aren’t honest or loyal. I am not like other agents, I actually give a damn. I am a breath of fresh air. I may have done this for twelve years now but it barely feels like its been two years. I must be having fun (laughs).

DELUX: Share with me a favorite inspirational life quote. Fletcher: Always be honest, respectful, loyal and trustworthy in your dealings. That inspirational quote is by Charles Andrew Fletcher, my father. 55

DELUX PERSPECTIVE

DEATH OVER DESIGNER: THE JORDAN EPIDEMIC STORY BY: Seven L. Maxwell / @SevenMaxwell314

The iconic influence that is Michael Jordan has far surpassed his career leaving a lasting legacy of greatness for athletes to model for generations to come. As fans, we’ve celebrated his monumental milestones on and off the courts, and with his amazing ascension into a global icon, everyone across the globe wanted to be like Mike. When Nike partnered with Jordan to launch the Air Jordan campaign, they forever changed the face of basketball and the athletic footwear industry. With creative marketing concepts which immediately immersed consumers in their brandbuilding strategies, the Air Jordan brand hastily became a staple in the urban and athletic communities. 62

Since its debut in 1985, there has been unimaginable anticipation for each unveiling, and with classic and innovative designs and colorways released annually; each year boasts a new batch of kicks for buyers’ consumption. From the beginning, their marketing plan was brilliant. Capitalizing off of the basic principles of supply and demand has branded the Air Jordan shoe as elite in urban communities causing some to lash out violently all in attempts to own the emblem that elevates the social status of anyone rocking the latest J’s. With limited supplies shipped to select stores across the country bringing in potential buyers by the

thousands anticipating their opportunity to be the first of their crew to sport the latest releases, crowds often became unruly, requiring a police presence in attempts to keep the peace. The violence doesn’t just end with injury; people are being mugged and murdered mercilessly over the latest in the ever-changing soon-to-be-outdated pair of sneakers. With new colorways released in the months to follow, it was only a matter of time before the hottest item in the hood became the “old-Js” which had to be retired immediately in order to prevent pressure by peers.

Decades later, the news continues to report unrest which resulted in riots over an updated rendition of a retro release. The latest wave in violence revives one of the most unanswered questions of all times: Why hasn’t His Airness, Michael Jordan, spoken out against the violence over the shoe that sports his name? Some people believe that a simple statement will result in peace over sneaks; however, it may fall on deaf ears. That’s where personal responsibility comes into play. As parents and teachers of the next generation, it is our responsibility to assist our youth in valuing themselves more than a materialistic fad that won’t be relevant again until it’s considered to be the retro model—which his foot will have far outgrown by then. We must prepare the youth of our communities to look beyond the borders of their immediate

surroundings and create pathways measured by performance, not by the shoes they sport. We must take a personal vow as a community to elevate the next generation of leaders, and not praise them solely on their fashion affiliations. Mothers are burying their children over something that costs less to create than the current price of a full tank of gas. Individuality is essential. Inspiration over everything. Will the words of a man with superior athletic abilities manipulate the minds of the misguided into a peaceful resolve? Probably not, but unless he speaks out, the world will never know. Until then, it’s up to us to end this epidemic. Death over designer? For what?

DELUX EATS

B

obby Tessler had a decision to make and in the end, he went with his heart and his stomach! The local chef with more than 15 years experience passed on the opportunity to open a five-star restaurant because he wanted to have some fun. He wanted to open a restaurant where he could “play with food and make different sauces.” With his love of chicken wings and his desire to have fun, Tessler opened the St. Louis Wing Company. Since opening the restaurant in 2011, Tessler has worked tirelessly to grow his business and to help improve the local economy. “My goal is to create jobs and try to urge the people of St. Louis to support local businesses.” One of his goals is for St. Louis to become more like Chicago and Memphis. He calls Chicago “the motherland of mom and pop restaurants” and notes how both cities have thriving systems of locally-owned and operated eateries. For the St. Louis Wing Company to thrive and grow, Tessler understands that it must become a destination restaurant. “When people come into my restaurant to eat I try to make it a great experience for them so they’ll come back and support me.” He recalled a time during Super Bowl 2012 when people were in line waiting for their orders and were getting impatient because their wait was longer than the 45 minutes they were promised. Instead of panicking, he turned off the music in the restaurant and told everyone, “Today is Super Bowl Sunday, [and] every body in America wants chicken wings. Please be patient!” Then, he bought a round of beer for everyone to reward their patience while he returned to the kitchen to finish the orders. Tessler is banking on excellent customer service and great wings to create a buzz that will help to make the St. Louis Wing Company a destination restaurant. He said he is motivated by seeing a restaurant full of people and having an opportunity to meet with customers and get their feedback. One of the ways Tessler plans to keep his restaurant full is by creating new sauces that are made daily from scratch. “I’m 74

As the restaurant grows, he said he envisions the day when he can begin to franchise the restaurant. His business model includes the development of approximately five franchise restaurants around the St. Louis area. “I designed my logo and restaurant to give it a franchise look.” With his experience as a chef and his desire to have fun on the job, the chicken business in St. Louis just became more competitive.

FRESH INSPIRATION

BILAL

“If you’re going to try, go all the way; otherwise don’t even start”…

N

ot to put Bilal in a box, but if he had to give his sound a genre, he’d call it “rocky-soulfunk-acid-jazz”. According to his Facebook page, “Bilal was swept up in what the media referred to as a ‘Neo Soul’ movement. Bilal didn’t feel the term fit. ‘I was trying to come from a jazz perspective…trying to write open ended tunes that could go in any direction when played live.’” He’s currently working on his new record due out February 12, 2013 titled A Love Surreal. “It’s kind of a play on an album that never released, A Love For Sale.” He’s finished mastering the album and plans to perform it on this next tour (see dates and locations below). Bilal says his lyrics are simply inspired by life. The last album, spoke on a lot of topics that are unspoken about. Along with the things he was going through as a man; dealing with his oldest son who is autistic and his middle child who has sickle cell. These life situations put him in a different headspace. Add to that the economy and government; he started writing the blues. I’ve been following Bilal since the release of 1st Born Second with cuts such as “Soul Sista” and “When

Will U Call”. And lest I forget “Love Poems” in which he sings to a woman he wants to be more than friends with. On his 2010 album, Airtight’s Revenge, he sings to his children on “Little One” telling them he’s just a man working hard to be a better man. And on “Flying” he sings about a girl who was left to the streets to run wild after her parents failed her. He says the lyrics are different, of course, as he evolves from album to album, but he still draws from the same life experiences. “This last album may have been more electronic, but I still write them in the same manner. And I really don’t pay attention to my progression [from album to album]. I sit back look at it afterwards.” During his travels, being recognized by fans is inspiring to Bilal because they’re so encouraging toward him. He shared that his favorite place to perform is not a specific city or venue, rather in front of a crowd that is all the way there with him; doesn’t matter where he is. If he has that vibe and everyone is into the moment and at attention, those are the best situations! Bilal is working on a “f’n hella dope” website, but until then follow him on Twitter and Facebook! St. Louis can support him at 2720 Cherokee on December 13. In addition to that show, he has three shows coming up in California December 6-8, Chicago on December 14 followed by Indianapolis on December 15 and Nashville on December 16. No excuses! Be a supporter of this progressive artist with “genrebending music”. 77

DELUX COMMUNITY

do something that wasn’t ordained for you to do you will not be successful. Do not set your personal expectations based upon someone else’s. Recognize your calling. Happiness is not tied to finances nor materialistic things.” Words like that keep me on the edge of my seat. Speaking to James Clark was definitely insightful, motivating and life changing. Even watching him enjoy his squash bisque made a very picky eater like me, consider trying the dish. I could definitely see the gift that he is given exude through each word he spoke and each time he smiled at the thought of helping our community. “I have found my purpose in life and it has been reaffirmed by God and how he has positioned me. I have been provided with all the tangible and intangible resources that I need to fulfill his purpose,” says Clark.

DR. JAMES CLARK: Genuinely Reaching Out Have you ever yearned to work in a field you are passionate about? Some people may dream of the day to make a living by doing what they love every day. James Clark, VP of Better Family Life embodies that. “It is everything I need,” he says with a smile. James Clark is constantly building new partnerships, changing people’s lives and leaving each time with a rewarding feeling in result of meeting another families need. Having learned issues we face day to day, Clark encourages our communities to resolve them. “I have learned two things. The issues we face every day the government, police, or the churches can’t solve. Families have to solve these problems we face,” Clark believes. If we bridge the gap between resource providers and neighborhoods that are challenged, a lot of problems will be resolved. Clark states, “African Americans can’t go any further as a race until we deal with the crime, dysfunction, and violence that is disturbing the urban core. We as black people have been pulled into a circus fossa, which right outside the tent 78

(nightclub) are warzones. Our future is bleak. During the civil rights movements, we were taught to be non-violent against others. Now we need to be taught to be non-violent with each other.” Clark then reminds me of the sad communities we have. He pulls up YouTube on his phone. There are thousands of videos of our young black brothers and sisters fighting each other. This particular video saddened me because it was two young black girls fighting like animals. Just within arm reach of their fight were about seven teenagers watching and laughing, including the person recording. Then it became worse. A young black male joined the fight and attacked one of the girls. After that a big brawl was on the rise. This is what society sees when they think of young black individuals. Talking to Clark opened my eyes even wider that we need to take the effort and time to reach out and save our people and our communities. Clark advises, “Listen to and be in tune with what God is telling you. Do not ignore the obvious. If you

Staying in the lane God puts you in and accepting things will happen in due time is what Clark believes will veer one from enduring any struggles along their way. Clark having God in his life helped him see which path to approach. Although, his father showed him the basic stepping stones to take. “I am on another level with my path. I remember saying I wanted to be rich, and my dad said Life isn’t about money. I have thought about being a lawyer, professional football player, real estate agent and even opening several businesses; but with those ideas nothing happened. As soon as I started helping people is the moment when so many doors opened for me. Now I am able to open doors for others. When I look at how many thousands of people I helped find jobs, mothers who couldn’t reach their sons and I put them on a better path, those are the moments worth celebrating. I know that I’ve saved lives. I am totally being led by God and I love it. I encourage other people to walk their path. When you find your unique path that’s when you’ll be blessed beyond measure,” says Clark. Speaking to James Clark, I could just see in his eyes that he really genuinely loves his job. I can tell that Better Family Life is his home away from home. I can tell that he hasn’t taken a vacation since 1997 because he loves what he does so much. Being such an inspiration to young people and even every other generation, Clark has inspirations of his own. “From the years 1990- 2000 I visited Juvenile Centers every Tuesday talking to young men and women. I ran into a young man once who told me what I said to him at the juvenile center 15+ years ago kept him from going to the penitentiary. Then at that very moment he called his son over. He told me he teaches his son everything I taught him. His son told me one story that I told his father word by word. Moments like those are what inspires me.”

VOTE FOR YOUR RIGHT TO BARE ARMS Ok so it’s sleeve season. That doesn’t mean we ignore are arms because their covered. Now is the time to sculpt the arms we want to show off next summer. Women want to shed the “bat wings” or excess skin on their arms while guys to beef up their arms. Don’t fret you’ll be sleeveless in no time with these sure fire arm exercises. GUYS Want bigger arms? Work your triceps, not your biceps. The triceps brachii is the largest muscle on our arms so the stronger/ larger we get our tris the more girth our arms will appear to have. Focus on about 60/40 triceps to bicep work. Also take note of your form. Curls and extensions should be done within the proper range of motion. Too short of a range of motion is waste, too long of range of motion increases injury risk. Rest! Realize that when we weight train we are literally destroying muscle fibers and forcing them to be rebuilt stronger and more durable. Destroy, rest, repeat! If you don’t allow recovery, you won’t see results.

GALS Don’t be afraid to lift heavy! No you won’t be bulky. No you won’t get body builder arms. Women don’t have enough testosterone for bulky muscles so without supplements it’s not going to happen. If you want change you have to

challenge your muscles enough to force change. Trust me they won’t do it on their own. No weights, no problem. Tricep pushups are a simple way to sculpt your arms without picking up a dumbbell. Simply moving your hands closer together during your pushups (yes “girl” pushups are ok) recruits more of your triceps to be worked. You’ll feel the burn almost immediately but 3 sets of 15 should do the trick. Chances are if you have unwanted fat on or around your arms you need to lose weight. Focus on burning the fat off of your arms so those guns can show. Diet and intense cardio may be your best solution to your arm problems

POM -APOMEGRANATE

Pomegranates have long been hailed as a healthy food we should all be eating more of. Widely regarded as a superfood, pomegranate juice is packed with antioxidants and is also known to lower blood pressure, guard against heart disease and help fight certain types of cancer. Amongst the benefits associated with pomegranate juice consumption are: · Bulge-busting. Pomegranate juice can deflate so-called muffin tops and belly fat, according to a study by Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, published in the last few weeks in the Journal of Nutritional Science. Volunteers who drank 500ml of juice every day for four weeks had lower levels of plasma NEFA (non-esterified fatty acids), which are linked to the storage of abdominal fat. · Perfect skin. A million research programme by scientists in Spain has discovered that pomegranate extract stimulates type I procollagen synthesis

in the skin, which helps promote skin repair. The team at Probeletebio laboratories, Murcia, is now conducting further clinical trials on the ability on pomegranate extract to restore the skin’s youthful appearance. · Anti-stress. In a separate study, the QMU team reported that pomegranate juice significantly reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol in saliva, while volunteers reported feeling more enthusiastic and less distressed after

having the drink. · Love Potion. The same study also found that a daily glass of juice increases levels of testosterone – which can boost sexual desire – in both men and women. Testosterone can also boost memory and calm nerves. · High Energy. Some brands of pomegranate juice drink now contain a natural fruit sweetener which provides a slow, continuous energy release rather than a short-term energy rush.

to work with the legendary group The Three Degrees - the one girl group who stood the test of time and has been around fifty years,” added Jean. You may remember their song from the original Soul Train theme. The group had hits years ago and they still travel. Jean and Marcus are working on The Three Degrees 50th anniversary project.

MARCUS & JEAN BAYLOR Drummer and St. Louis native Marcus Baylor is coming home for the holidays to perform on Thursday, December 27 at the Bistro at Grand Center, 3536 Washington Ave. But check out what happen last time he was here... The Suite Soul Spot Concert Series, in association with VanitaApplebum Entertainment Services, brought Frank McComb to St. Louis along with Marcus on drums and Jean as a vocalist. And oh what a show it was! It was the first time the Baylors worked with Frank and it’s a tour that really needs to be traveling to all cities *nudges your local music promoter*. You may remember St. Louis native Marcus Baylor as the drummer for the American jazz/ fusion group, Yellowjackets. He played and produced for the

Yellowjackets close to a decade while also working with other artists like Anita Baker and Cassandra Wilson. And Jean Baylor, you know as one-half of the 90’s R&B group, Zhane’. She has also written and produced for SWV, Mary J. Blige, and others. Together the couple started Be A Light, the imprint record label with the purpose of doing exactly what the name says, “to be a light”. The couple shared, “In mainstream media where there’s a lot of darkness, our mission is to be that light. It’s

the business umbrella that we produce and distribute all our musical recordings through.” Jean and Marcus want to portray an encouraging image in the music business. “We need more of a balance of companies and artists who can just be themselves, but be a positive influence,” said Marcus. In addition to Be a Light, Marcus and Jean have a production unit, The Baylors. “We were functioning in that way since starting Jean’s first solo project,” stated Marcus. “We do our own stuff but are branching out to other artists like Philly native Carol Riddick [it’ll be her second solo project]. And we’re starting

After the couple shared the multiple, ongoing projects in their lives, including Jean’s upcoming holiday album Light Up the World and performances by their band, Free Day, I had to ask, WHEN DO Y’ALL SLEEP?!?! “We have to know how to balance it all. Being a creative mind, creative people can do so many different things but you have to know when focus on those things and when to release it,” says Marcus. Jean chimed in, “It’s not easy!” They’re also working on Marcus’ album set to release next year. The chemistry between Marcus and Jean was undeniable and I know any future project collaborated on by this couple will be gold! It’s real music at it’s finest!

I designed this line to boost the confidence of those who are lacking and to add that extra spice to those who are more than confident. Everyone will feel like a superstar in these clothes!! My talent ranges from perfect birthday dresses to extravagant wedding pieces. Q. - What’s the inspiration behind starting this line? A. I have always been fashion crazy, but a simple sewing class in high school helped me to realize that I could bring my visions to life! I’ve been in love ever since. I was reassured that fashion was my calling after watching one of the best designers, my mentor, Madelynn Loper create beautiful jaw-dropping designs. At the age of 16 my mother finally purchased me my very own sewing machine after I begged her countless times.
