Happy birthday nelly! Who else would be able to talk the city into parading past patrons on the Ameristar’s most popular night? Nelly—that’s who. Celebrating yet another birthday and bringing out numbers in grand fashion as only he can, Nelly called out the ladies and they answered—with the fellas following fast behind them. Sexy lingerie, mixed with endless bottles equaled a night to remember. In case you can’t, Delux was in the building to capture the moment for you.

St. Louis, a city full of culture, diversity, and talent, has seen an abundance of national highlights and low points. With Nelly and the St. Lunatics breezing through the hip hop scene and lighting the path for many more to follow, our generation finally had something to celebrate. For once, we had an opportunity to witness history and take pride in our city and the residents who represented us on a national level. As we continue to celebrate the success of our native sons, we’re also in the process of producing other rising stars whose ambitions are as inspiring as their talent, which will undoubtedly help propel them to elevated levels. Corey Black, Jessica Buck, and Bradd Young are three of the city’s young and motivated talents currently dominating their field. While maintaining a close connection with others who share in their passion, they all have a common bond—the compelling charisma to stand out in a crowd of many in their industry. Each with a different tale, they all share the same story of success, and that’s why they’re gonna run this town tonight.

Paradise in the Midst of the Concrete Jungle words by Sharifah Sims-Williams images by LAWRENCE BRYANT

A mother and her two daughters tentatively enter the garden, not really knowing what to expect once inside. It’s an unseasonably pleasant Sunday afternoon in August and the trio has come with light snacks and sodas. There’s a young couple sitting on the corner of a marble bench that encloses a small patch of land with young trees and other greenery. The mother relaxes on the other end of the bench while her youngest daughter starts to explore the in-ground fountains. Dressed in skinny jeans, a T-shirt and Converse sneakers, she peeps at the fountain spout in front of her and waits for the water’s next appearance. The water peeps out from the concrete about 2 inches then retreats. She anxiously waits for the fountain’s next appearance, which comes out higher and a little more forceful, soaking her pink sneakers and both the younger girl and her sister begin to giggle. They start to run through the fountains, laughing, giggling, getting soaked – finding pure joy in something so simple. There were others taking in this afternoon delight. On this same Sunday afternoon, young couples and older ones stroll through Citygarden, downtown’s newest gem. Fathers and daughters play in the wading pool surrounding other statuesque fountains. Newlyweds still in their ceremony attire and other models take their place among the photographers’ new backdrop of natural elements and city landscaping. Citygarden debuted in its downtown St. Louis location June 30. The garden represents a partnership between the City of St. Louis, which owns the land, and the non-profit, St. Louisbased Gateway Foundation, which provided the funding — including an estimated $25$30 million for design and construction and “soft” costs like insurance and maintenance. Through the generosity of the Gateway Foundation, the non-profit organization whose mission is to enrich life and culture in the city through outdoor art and urban design, St. Louis has landed one of the most unique and sensually (as in the senses) pleasing spots in the city. The two-block oasis features two dozen works of modern and contemporary sculpture by some of the world’s most highly regarded artists. Some of the artists include Fernand Leger, Mark di Suvero, Keith Haring, Martin Puryear, Jim Dine, Tony Smith and Aristide Maillol.

The landscape is a lush mix of grasses, young trees and other greenery that add to the garden’s appeal. Citygarden features an imaginative use of water and stone that plays off of the region’s chief natural feature: its great rivers. The landscaping also features diverse plants, selected and arranged both to complement the sculpture and to provide a beauty and power of their own. The strong emphasis on its six rain gardens and native plants, among other features, locates the garden in the horticultural vanguard. Another highlight of Citygarden’s beauty is the array of breathtaking sculptures, free for anyone to see. The sculptures’ space was designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz, of Charlottesville, Virginia, designer of the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania., among other award-winning projects. Warren Byrd, principal, calls the project “by far the most important and interesting urban project we have ever worked on.” In addition to its sculpture and magnificent plants, the garden features a remarkable hardscape, including a 550-foot long arcing limestone wall enclosing a large video wall for video art and movies; a glass-walled café; and a stunning, serpentine “meander wall” capped in polished granite. Its water features include a six-foot waterfall and a spray plaza, where 102 nozzles will shoot water as much as seven feet into the air in thousands of patterns and colors . It's a place where children will play... and where they'll want to return, again and again. Citygarden is located in downtown St. Louis visit citygardenstl.org\

The dilapidated building that stood on Enright Avenue, just a little bit north of the Central West End, had been vacant for over 20 years. Homeowners Tiffanie and Walter Walton saw past its broken spirit and hollow hallways to ensue their vision. It was the beginning of many soulful Sundays, Merry Christmases, and birthday bashes for years to come. They brought the 118 year old house back to life by preserving much of the original charm, such as the hardwood flooring, the brick fireplace, and the original doorframes, all of which provide foundation for the place that they call home. Four levels, almost 5000 square feet of open space (including a basement), and 12 foot ceilings, leave plenty of room to entertain guests. They have two children, Sean, 17, and Kyran, 8, who are quietly tucked away on the top level that's nicknamed “The Third World”, an area that was initially sealed off and rented out as an apartment back in the 80’s. When asked what was their favorite part of the house, Walter replied “The deck out back. I can play my music and drink a beer while I fire up the grill.” While, Tiffanie replied, “The kitchen. I love to sit around the island and chill with friends.” The homeowners are a social duo who have hosted everything from a housewarming which consisted of a live band and over 200 guests, down to quiet dinner parties for close friends and family.

DSTYLE

When the idea to start a clothing company materialized, it seemed as if someone had turned on a light switch – and Kid Genius was born. The company is creatively structured to mimic the fundamental stages of the human life cycle. Like a child, they started bold with rambunctious, yet innocent designs. Next, they entered a phase of “limitless creativity and an unmatched thirst for discovery,” representative of the toddler stage through Kindergarten. Kid Genius plans to continue to trace its life cycle of growth and development up to and beyond Couture stature, representative of selfactualized adulthood. Having realized the power of networking early in his young life, 19 year old company president, Alston Moore, made a number of critical connections, including partnerships with Kanye West’s label G.O.O.D. Music, and Chingy. These relationships proved vital to Kid Genius, as they offered not only support for the business, but also insight into the interests and thought processes of music and fashion industry players. Though the current Kid Genius style is primarily urban, the brand markets to a wide variety of consumers who naturally identify with the brand’s evolution themes, and allowing everyone to identify the ‘genius’ within themselves. Currently, Kid Genius is available in Boutiques and stores throughout St. Louis and Miami. The Company’s ultimate goal is to develop worldwide brand popularity, and open boutiques in St. Louis, L.A., New York, Tokyo, and Paris. Motivated by the momentum and positive feed back that the company has received thus far, the Kid Genius team is encouraged to continue to strive towards bringing their dreams to fruition. Their early realization that success would only result from hard work, sacrifice and fearlessness has served to create a stable foundation upon which the company can build a lasting brand. Since the company’s inception, Moore also stressed the value of positively impacting people’s lives and encouraging youth to focus on their dreams. However, the brand also emphasizes the importance of anticipating consumer needs and working diligently to understand the many layers of style aesthetics. Kid Genius’ most popular design and item, the Light Bulb logo tee can be found at the online store- www.kidgeniusclothing.com. Tackling obstacles, exceeding expectations, and pushing the parameters of creativity have opened doors of opportunity and a path of endless possibilities for this new and progressive trendsetter. The owner/founder’s words best set the stage for this local company’s bright future, “Kid Genius reminds us that we can still tap into who we truly are, and free ourselves from the conformity of adulthood with the help of swagger and style.”

"Determined, friendly and straightforward," that's how aspiring model, Ashley describes herself. Motivated by her Latina fire and passion, Ashley is ready for what ever the small circumfrence of modeling has to offer her in St. Louis. "I started modeling to earn extra income and I'm always networking to get more jobs now." Ashley's full-time gig is that of a college student and intern. She shares that as an adolescent, it was harder for her to fit in because of her multiethnic background, but now says that she is happier that diversity has become more embraced. If granted one wish, Ashley would "want the power to make herself happy as well as the people around her." When asked what she would do as the Commander in Chief for a day, she carefully confesses, "I would take the troops out of Iraq because my cousin is there." In matters of love, Ashley believes the most appealing thing a man could do for her is "to be supportive, understanding, and oh... give me a massage before bed."

MR

SO

” ST. LOUIS

words by Seven L. Maxwell. Stylist Darren Nesbitt, Charee Oliver & Desiree Lyons So it begins: Murphy Lee’s reign of terror on the hip hop game. Though none could doubt him before, after his Unplugged debut on September 25, 2009, it’s again confirmed that St. Louis hearts its homegrown MC, Murphy Lee.

"...I’m a free man, and I can do what the hell I want. drop when I want to drop..." Following Seviin’s performance, the crowd witnessed a movement. Accompanied by his locally-based, hand-picked band, and draped in U-C-ME gear, Murph Derrty took the stage and transitioned the sold-out crowd from a disconnected, pretentious lot, to a raucous crew of all-out, receptive party-goers. Opening with his 16 bars of fire from the Grammy Award-winning single, “Shake a Tailfeather,” and eventually bringing it home with his fan-favorite, “Not a Stain on Me,” Murph rocked the house from “Action” to “Cut,” and the crowd rocked right along with him! Throughout this one-night-only engagement, Murph exuded the confidence and passion of a star, and graciously shared his shine with two members of his St. Lunatic family, Kyjuan and City Spud, who playfully supported Murph and lit up the stage while cranking out classic cuts like “Midwest Swing” and “Air Force Ones.” It didn’t end there. Murph helped his fans remember the hot Summer days of riding down Natural Bridge Road with speakers blasting, as they sang along in tune to his first solo-single, “What the Hook Gone Be.” He continued by ripping both old and new cuts, and he also took time out to explain his motivation for asking to be released from Universal Records. “I never thought of myself as a waiter, because I never thought of this business as a restaurant”. .....H e c o n t i n u e d ,

“ M y 1st album went platinum, but there was no second album. Within the last year, I asked for my release from Universal Records and they gave it to me. So now I’m a free man, and I can do what the hell I want. I drop when I want to drop. Now I’m in control of my own destiny.” And this new-found freedom has allowed Murphy Lee to open up and allow us into his world once again. But don’t mistake him; just because Murph is rocking a U-C-ME shirt doesn’t mean he’s tucked away his Derrty Ent. chain. There’s no beef amongst St. Louis’ first family of rap, and Murph continues represent the Derrty Ent. family as an active member of the ‘Tics, as well as constantly collaborating with and shouting them out in his independent endeavors. “Everything I do is for the group. The only difference is: when I go in with the group, it’s more competitive. That’s how the ‘Tics have always been. When we’re in our ciphers we try to go hard. The next person has to go harder than the last.” He continues, “With my solo project,

CLOTHEs I AM SNKY I’m competing against the world. I need 3:16s, and I need the bangin’ hooks, and the bangin’ beats. I need all to represent me! I like the style I like, and I like the beats I like, and I go from there.” It’s clear in his latest project, Murph had everything he needed. He invites his listeners on a serious ride down the back streets of the city, but saves plenty of room for lighthearted fun by cruising into the oncoming lane that leads to the hearts of big-booty women across the globe. It also became clear during the performance, that with the right marketing strategy, Murph possesses the talents to transcend the form of a St. Louis-based super-star, and assume that of a global icon similarly to his local predecessor Nelly, and more recent worldwide hood sensation Lil’ Wayne. In an era where fans want to spend more time enjoying their music than they do decoding it, Murph’s versatility is exactly what the game needs. With a metaphor canvas that spans as wide as Weezy’s and deep as Kanye’s, and is as easily understood and relatable as that of newcomer Drake, Murph’s return represents our city’s contribution to the contemporary rap revolution! If Murph’s journey is part of a revolution, then his I’m Free mixtape is officially the shot heard around the world. With a cadre of fresh and hungry St. Louisans rhyming alongside him, Murph’s

upcoming DVD project, Murph or Die, is also sure to be a success. The much-anticipated second album from our native son, [INSERT ALBUM TITLE] even includes extensive DVD footage detailing the struggles and triumphs along his career path. Electronics giant Best Buy has agreed to help distribute the project, a powerful alliance that will surely help Murph beat the heavy odds in the present low CD sales era. A wide variety of contemporary artists are struggling to gain these types of high-powered distribution deals, another testament to Murph’s star-power and industry confidence in his success. And in the end, there he stood; alone onstage with his band he faced a crowd of die-hard fans who have been starved of his head-bobbing melodies and mindboggling metaphors for far too long. The moment rang out as officially as CNN’s confirmation of the fall of the King of Pop. But unlike that dark, tragic hour, the music world can celebrate Murphy Lee’s freedom, and his triumphant return to reintroduce the world to St. Louis, 16 bars at a time.

Ira De

ewitt words by Tiffany Nashville Stylist Darren Nesbitt , 41 Charee Oliver & Desiree Lyons

When you do something everyday its hard not to make it personal

This 30-something mom, decked out in a black, short-sleeved mini dress by Nicole Miller and Louis Vuitton handbag, seems cooler than most. Her husband’s family owns the St. Louis Cardinals, she has her Ph.D. in Psychology and Education, and worked as a professor for many years. Even more intriguing about the subject, is that she founded her own record company, Notifi Records, the only independent label out of St. Louis that has also launched an artist [fact check]. She even owns her recording studio, and is St. Louis’ leading female executive music industry player. Ira Dewitt, originally from Istanbul, has resided in St. Louis for 14 years. The baseball aspect of her life is mainly her husband’s responsibility. She, however has an immense love for music and desired to start a career in the field. After teaching many years at a local university, she worked for FYI Public Relations, a full-service firm specializing in entertainment, fashion, and found generally on the cusp of all things “pop culture.” FYI is also Nelly’s PR company. Ira co-founded Fly Moves Productions with the owners of Phat Buddha Productions, and has signed two rappers to major labels from these ventures. Not to be mistaken as a newcomer, Ira paid her dues before she was able to successfully start Notifi Records.

42

Her first act signed to Notifi is platinumselling artist, Ginuwine. She met Ginuwine through mutual friends and was able to offer him an attractive deal, signing bonus and incentives. “A Man’s Thoughts,” Ginuwine’s sixth release, debuted at #1 on the R&B charts, a huge accomplishment, not bad for a St. Louis-based independent label run by a woman from Istanbul. When asked about her plans for Notifi, Ira replied that she plans on sticking with R&B, but may eventually dabble in hip hop. Not a big fan of rap, Ira won’t totally rule hip-hop out as a genre to record, market and develop. Ginuwine’s second single, “Trouble,” was recently released and has many features, in addition to a St. Louis remix with Chingy, Jibbs, Ms. B, and Potzee. Notifi made certain to seize the opportunity to work with the many talented local artists featured on the track. Ira is also in the process of negotiating Ginuwine’s international deal, and preparing for a video shoot which will reunite the artist with his early co-collaborators Missy Elliot and Timberland. Notifi has designs beyond Ginuwine, a couple of notable examples being Ira’s new artists, BOS and L. BOS is a hip-hop/urban crossover group while L is a solo neo hiphop/R&B fusion artist in the vein of Chris Brown meets Drake, and the label is very excited about presenting both acts. Ira and

No white woman is doing what I’m doing. Notifi are also working to sign other popular R&B acts, and has undertaken early talks with Jon B and his management, as well as Brandy and her management group. Though she loves her work, Ira’s demanding schedule often makes it difficult for her to separate business from personal affairs. “When you do something everyday its hard not to make it personal,” she states. “I’m maniacal about my work,” she adds. Her kids love that she has a record label. They also like that she has her own life, and like most kids, don’t want her overly involved at their school and in their social lives. Despite their parents’ high profile jobs, the Dewitt children enjoy being normal kids, and their mom is happy to oblige them as much as she can. Ira enjoys spending time with her family, and whenever possible, she reads. She recently took a week off, turned off her cell phone, and traveled to Canada to visit family, where she was happily able to finish three novels during the vacation. While family is her top priority, Ira values being able to contribute to, and receive support from the St. Louis music industry. “Many people seem to only ask for monetary support. But I am more than a paycheck.” St. Louis, thus far, lacks the support for music business enterprises that cities in some larger, more progressive markets have established. The city is still missing many of the workshops, panels, and other

industry driven activities a more robust local music business scene would produce. Nonetheless, Ira continues to extend herself and find creative ways to support local artists in hopes of rendering this condition a thing of the past. Ira is also quite candid about having to confront the obstacle of being a woman in an industry which like many, is primarily male-dominated at the executive level. It’s a tough business. “No white woman is doing what I’m doing. It’s been a challenge, and I often feel like I’m swimming in a shark’s tank.” As with many professions, music insiders have a bad history of attempting to deal short-handedly with women. Ira has had to be terse and pointed with many people, which she admits doesn’t come easy to her. Her time is just as valuable as everyone else’s, and she’s learned to prove that and make that fact clear. “The music business isn’t based on honesty. People will try to bully and threaten you to get their way.” Nonetheless, Ira Dewitt has proven her resiliency, and intense desire to continue to build her business in a trustworthy manner, despite the adversity that comes.

Sineta Roker Photography Lance Omar Thurman words by Tamika Taylor

I got home from a long day of work and settled in for an evening of listening to some music and a little relaxation, when unexpectedly, I got a call to do an interview with one of our talented local artists. Sineta Roker’s voice is bright and bubbly which is not what you would expect, after hearing her belt her song “As If” in her sultry alto voice. Her sound is reminiscent of Toni Braxton, and her lyrics tell the story of break ups, moving on, and starting over again. She is a local starlet who is destined to outshine the rest. She gifted me with the chorus of “Give It To Me Right” and I was blown away by her raw talent. Sineta is originally from Thousand Oaks, California and migrated to St. Louis after high school. She credits her inspiration to the original diva, Whitney Houston. She describes her style as a mixture of Pop, R&B, and Rock, and believes her sound is unlike many of today’s mainstream artists who either fall into the categories of R&B or neo soul. She’s crooned the National Anthem many times at an array of sporting events around the country and She’s also Headlined at the Hard Rock Café here in St. Louis. Most notably, she was a contestant on American Idol during season 6 and earned herself a ticket to Hollywood, beating out thousands of other promising hopefuls. She even admits that, Jordan Sparks, the season 6 winner, along with Aretha Franklin are two artists who’s sound overwhelm her with emotion. When I asked what she is listening to right now, she responds intently, “I like real music….real singers…. with real voices. My son and I were in the car listening to the radio and I realized that every song was about sex, and not just about sex, but had the word ‘sex’ in the name of the song!” I chimed in agreeing, what happened to the music? There was a time when we had love songs; when we were told that a house was not a home when no one was there to hold you tight. So it’s not surprising when she says she’s listening to Marc Broussard, Jazmine Sullivan, and Melanie Fiona, artists that represent the same passion that she produces through her music. I asked if she wrote her own music, and in a very earnest tone she responded, “every one of my songs are true, it’s all based on my life’s events, and what I do is write down everything I’m feeling….then, with John Glasgow’s help, my co-writer, we turn it into lyrV.1.3 45

ics.” She divulges that she’s formerly been with three independent labels, and is really considering dropping an independent album and promoting it herself. She asked me if I was familiar with Eric Roberson, who is out there doing his thing independently. I tell her that he’s actually my favorite artist and we exchange laughs at the coincidence. Once we found this common ground, the interview awkwardness drained away and we start a friendly conversation about good music and I was delighted not to have strayed too far away from the evenings original agenda. Sineta also spent time in Atlanta, GA, but is back in St. Louis and back in the studio working with a live band, conjuring up new material so that she can do what she loves most...performing. Sineta has a very well rounded ear for music. She is a fan of Gospel, Rock, and Jazz; genres that have helped to mold the unique sound that she resonates perfectly. She laughs when she tells me, that she not only considers herself a starving artist, but an aspiring actress. She studied acting with Writer/Director, Steve Coulter, of Tyler Perry Studios and is currently seeking film roles as well. She is certainly no stranger to being in front of the camera. She currently co-hosts, “Teens on the Green” a nationwide junior golf tournament for kids from ages 8-18 that offers scholarships for college. Ms. Roker’s last name makes her a shoe-in for stardom, stemming from a family with a capacity for great panache, including singer Lenny Kravitz, actress Roxy Roker, and anchorman Al Roker. When asked what it is that she wants people to know about her, she enthusiastically responds, “beauty is only skin deep.” As a strikingly beautiful woman of Hispanic and African American descent, she believes that it’s difficult to be successful as a female in a business that is dominated by men. “In the past, women have set a precedent where they have compromised themselves in order to succeed, but not me.” She believes that this practice has hindered her success, but it has also earned her respect, and in the end, that’s what’s most important to her. We exchange the proper courtesies before parting ways, and I was left with an enlightened view of dedication and perseverance of one of St. Louis’ most talented artists.

ASK MOcha

This months Ask Mocha is dedicated to the many men and women who ask me weekly what am I doing wrong with my life,? How can I change? I consider myself to be a very strength based person, so in order for me to answer that question I would have to ask them to find out what they are doing right in their lives first. Once you reach a level of comfort and love for yourself and start to appreciate who you are and what you stand for, you can begin to build the foundation for happiness in your life, which will answer your uncertainties about what’s wrong. We call this building on strengths not weaknesses. You may not find anything wrong with yourself. You may be lacking love. This may seem cliché but love conquers all. Love really does heal. I see and feel pain inside of people because I use to be “a pain expert’ dwelling on everything wrong and how I was a victim of life’s circumstances, as if I was the only person in the world who had problems. Describe your best qualities. What are you good at doing? Think of all the things you are good at...Are you a good talker? Do you meet people easily? Do you like to play a musical instrument? Are you good at sport, making people laugh or are you a stylish dresser? Are you organized and efficient? Would you hire you? Would you be your friend? Digging in one’s nose and laughing at a funeral are generally considered uncouth, but local Inappropriate Behavior has come to stand for a musical entity that has been aggressively breaking down barriers of race and sound. Formed in January 2009, the impetus for the band was lead vocalist Sunni Minx’s outrage at what she viewed as a complacent, mundane local St. Louis rap scene. Feeling limited by her opportunities, she decided to create one. Minx partnered with the talented pianist/keyboardist Sandi (“S3”), and the two embarked on a journey to make their band. The pair ran into a multitude of adversity, namely disloyal instrumentalists. But with focus, tenacity, and craigslist, they found the missing links that would propel them forward.

56

Drummer Boy brings quiet confidence, Sammy B, the lead guitarist serves up the charisma, and Bassin’ Jason a consistent and cool calmness. The trio collectively brought the flavor the group needed to become local tastemakers. Bassin’ Jason has been rocking for 14 years but produces a youthful smile when he speaks of what’s ahead for himself and the group. Although Drummer Boy (the youngest member) has only been playing for 4 years, he finds himself unable to put down the sticks on stage, and views practice as a formality that leads to the thrill of performance. Sammy B sees new, creative hues that color his leads, though his musical origins

are rooted in the blues. And Sandi hasn’t stopped tickling the ivories since he was encouraged to play at his church at age 8. Sunni Minx was always inspired by music, but began to write and perform 5 years ago. The band is raw, provocative and resourceful, qualities which combine to give them a formula for success. Although the group is predominately male, the lyrics and musical themes in the writing are often geared towards empowering women, and encouraging images of women as possessing beauty and brains, as opposed to being viewed solely as sex symbols. The product is a sound as authentic as the band’s members, an unsettling newness that leaves listeners craving more. The spunky sound can be described as alternative hip pop rock with gospel and reggae undertones, a diverse mix that reflects the nature of the group. Inspired by Ray Charles’ soulful sound, No Doubts energy and lyrics, and Andre 3000’s distinctiveness, attitude, and creativity, they find cohesion on the stage in spite of their differences. Inappropriate Behavior's seasoned performers have covered tremendous ground in a short period of time as a band. Being featured on some of St. Louis’ most reputable stages, they’re venues list includes The Pageant, The Old Rock House, The Black Label and Harrah’s Casino, where they 're spirited sets built the band’s confidence and fan base. They also use their music to convey messages and breach subjects that are often ignored. Songs like “Twisted,” and “She Think She Cute” are standout tracks that reveal the imagination and depth of Inappropriate Behavior. Sunni Minx is not only the lead singer, but also works diligently as the band’s manager and booking agent. Driven and determined, her professional and performance styles are combining to create a

buzz that’s already been heard from the loop to the edges of south county. The group draws heavily from everyday life experience to produce its lyrics, and though Sunni Minx and Sandi compose most of the songs, finding the perfect sound and accents to marry the words and music is always a group effort. The band has designs on gaining worldwide success, which includes planning a larger-scale tour for spring 2010. Maintaining group harmony and evolving their sound are also very important to the bandmates, but an emphasis on putting God first has helped them remain successful and overcome numerous setbacks. Though the band has faced hardships in the form of naysayers, instead of feeling discouraged, they’ve grown stronger by improving their sound through intense routine rehearsals and approaching new concepts. They also have a strong core of local industry supporters and sibling bands to encourage them, including the Midwest Avengers, Shock City Studios, XP Music and the Delmar Kings, who, along with the cheers of their family and fans,1 help them feel unstoppable. They’ve been dubbed the “future of music,” certainly tall shoes to walk in, which they wear with pride in their live performances. They’re an enterprising band hoping to be discovered by not only the majors, but investors as well. Ultimately, they’re searching for a solid record deal, and look to begin producing and writing for other artists as well. Offering a fresh new sound and electric stage presence to the St. Louis music scene, Inappropriate Behavior has never been so good. If life was a basket ball game and St. Louis was the court, the promoters would be the All-Stars with Mo Spoon holding his position as the ‘Tim Duncan’ of the nightlife. With his tall stature and quiet nature combined with his formula for staying true to the fundamentals, he was destined to reign at the top of his game. Born Mohammed Witherspoon, Mo Spoon, the creative force behind MPAC, had no clue while wrapping up his college career that simply passing out fliers for Distinguished Marketing Incorporated was going to change his life. “You gotta grind before you shine”, Mo humbly exclaims as he vividly paints a powerful portrait of how his hustle helped him to start setting off the St. Louis scene and teaming up with Rams’ Linebacker, Tommy Polley, for Monday Night Football at Lucky’s on the Landing. He’s since worked with every celebrity and socialite in the city while implementing his master plan to raise the bar for St. Louis. Mo Spoon has proven his capabilities with the successful launching of the Eye Candy series. When asked of the secret to his success, Mo Spoon simply states, “I can answer that in one word: Consistency. Whatever it took to get you to the point where it’s finally working for you, you have to do that over and over again”. He continues, “I try to provide the basic elements necessary to have a good time.” He demonstrates this theory by packing various venues the final Friday of each month with celebrities who love beautiful women, beautiful women who love to be seen, and partygoers

who love to be in the middle of it all. Of course with success comes adversity. With doubters questioning the validity of his models’ full potential, Mo Spoon is further motivated to helping these curvaceous cuties gain exposure while fulfilling their passions. Having showcased the Eye Candy models in every major publication in the city, he understands there’s always room for growth as he plans to introduce St. Louis’s finest in other markets. At this point, nothing that I’ve mentioned about Mo Spoon is unfamiliar. As a brand, his life is on display; but as a man, there’s an air of mystique that clouds around him. Keeping his personal life private, Mo Spoon exclusively revealed to Delux Magazine information about what means the world to him. “I’m really a family man. I have to make time for my family”, the proud husband—yes, husband—and father proclaims. He also revealed that his purpose is of a higher calling. Though he works to ensure each of his patrons enjoy the MPAC experience, he’s simultaneously continuing his spiritual journey as he works to bring his family and neighbors’ closer to Christ. Eventually expanding MPAC TV to share the success of the city with the rest of the world, Mo Spoon continues to hustle while remaining true to himself. With a passion for providing quality events and remaining one of the most humble men in the industry, Mo Spoon continues to hold his position as a successful promoter this city.

DSPOTLIGHT JOHN BURNS Last Man Standing

words by brian shields Image by Lawrence Bryant

They say a man is not measured by how many times he falls, but how many times he gets back up. After several setbacks, the 33 year old father of one reclaimed his rightful position as the King of Nightlife. A nationally ranked tennis player at the prestigious Clayton High School and alumni of UMSL, his pedigree reads like that of a pharmacist with degrees in both Biology and Chemistry, but rather than filling prescriptions at Walgreens, John Burns decided to use his keen business sense in order to embark on this journey. Originally, John’s quest to become a club owner was inspired by a set of high school parties in which he made $1200 on the first and $1700 on the second party. After a trip to the NBA All-Star game in Atlanta, in which he witnessed party goers paying anywhere from $300-$500 dollars to get into premiere nightclubs, it was time for John to answer his calling. A journey embarked upon with paths endured of success amidst road blocks of controversy! 60

The Living Room, John’s first venture, a multistoried club located downtown served as a training tool for John as he learned all the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of the business. Burns learned everything from liquor laws to how to manage his staff, security, and day-by-day operations. John also learned how taxing the nightclub business could be, recalling, “It really puts a strain on a relationship and it made me loose my hair by the time I was 30!" The Living Room enjoyed mild success before its doors were closed due to complications the co-owner had with taxes. Eight months later, the night life in St. Louis received a ‘major shot in the arm’ when John opened the club that put the party scene in St. Louis on the map, Plush! Plush Night Club, located at 20th and Market, opened its doors in January 2004. Plush occupied the former space of Have a Nice Day Cafe, connected to the historic Union Station. Plush routinely packed in 1200 party goers on a nightly

basis hosting everyone from T.I. toStephen Jackson to "pop bottles". "Plush had the number one liquor sales in the Mid West”, boasts John "We would have groups of 6-8 guys come in and buy 5 cases of Moet." It was at Plush where John learned the greatest secret to success in the industry revealing “I would treat everyone like they were V.I.P. and I partied with my customers."

is just something about when Terrance gets on the microphone that gets the crowd moving," exclaims John. The final element to Society was the security team. Society employed over 20 bouncers and police officers at a heftyprice tag of several thousand dollars a night. "I never want to see anyone get hurt at my clubs" maintains Burns.

The success and large crowds at Plush also caught the eye of city officials. In the final months of the club’s existence, police officers would routinely tow 20-50 cars from around the premises of Plush as well as block off neighboring streets to deny access to the venue. According to Burns, "There was definitely a racial divide involved with Plush. There were a lot of people that did not want those crowds around Union Station." After an ill-fated shooting outside of the club on November 12, 2006, city officials targeting Plush had all the ammo they needed and John voluntarily surrendered his liquor license. Even with all the heat that Plush drew from officials, less than one year later, John opened up Society less than a block away from Push.

Unfortunately, on May 8th, 2009, after a concert at Society, 3 men were gunned down in what was suspected as a targeted event. The shooting took place several blocks away from the club after John had previously contacted the police and recommended adding extra patrol to accommodate the largely expected crowd that night. After the murder, the city pulled the unprecedented move of seizing the occupancy permit from Society in an effort to make sure the club would shut down, after pressure from officials as well as rival club owners who saw their numbers dwindle while the doors of Society were open.

For a man that once sold CD's out the back of his trunk, John was like a kid in a Candy store at Society. The large capacity, state of the art sound system, and large stage gave John, who is a huge music lover, the chance to bring various artists and shows to St. Louis, and put on a show he did! During Society's reign nearly every hip-hop artist in the country performed at Society, although John says that his favorites were the T-Pain and Gucci Mane concerts. It was said the Gucci Mane concert was so large that Neiman Marcus and Sac's Fifth Avenue nearly sold out of clothes! The line for the 1 a.m. performance started forming as early as 7:30 p.m! Society was a huge success, but John says it would not have been possible without his "dream team". His mother affectionately called Mrs. B, helps John with everything from managing the staff to collecting money at the front door. "That’s one less stress I have and a huge weight off my shoulders knowing my mother is at the door and at the end of the night the money is going to comeback right,” declares John. The other key members of the dreamteam are DJ Sir Thurril, who John describes as the best DJ in St. Louis. Thurrils knack for getting the crowd jumping has earned him the moniker of "The Party Starter". Finally there’s Big Terance, hype man and radio commercial producer for John. "There

After unsuccessfully trying to open a number of clubs in St. Louis, John decided to take the show across the water to East St. Louis. After a large renovation, John re-opened the former Club Monestary in East St. Louis naming it of all names, Plush. The same crew that brought him all the success in the past is back and so are the concerts. "I knew it would be a challenge getting St. Louisianans to come across the water but I’m up for it" states John, and with beefed up security Plush promises to be the safest club in the bi-state area. This time around, John has two luxuries he has never experienced with his previous clubs, a six o' clock liquor license and a fully operable kitchen enabling him to serve food at the all new and improved Club Plush. Club owners often get a bad rap, but behind all the controversy, envy, and money that comes along with the business you will find a family man. John understands about perseverance and strives to put the people behind him in position to become just as successful. With plans on opening up a concert venue in St. Louis, as well as diving into the music industry, John is just getting started.

LilShaun STRAIGHT FROM THE STEETS ... words by Seven L. Maxwell image by LAWRENCE BRYANT

He’s so St. Louis, but far from being a Lunatic. Shaun “Lil’ Shaun” Lewis is a straight-from-thestreets rapper who grew up running through the back roads of University City. Although he grew up getting dirty while entertaining, his sound is unlike the Midwest Swing that you’ve grown accustomed to. Lil’ Shaun, who also goes under the moniker Deuce Sheezy has a hard-core flow reminiscent of a young T.I. “I just want to show the world the St. Louis that I see”. And with tracks filled with raw lyrics and bass-heavy beats, this 20-something rapper is determined to paint a not-so-pretty portrait, introducing the world to the fast-life of the streets of St. Louis. “I recorded my first song under Bulletproof Records when I was 11 or 12. I wrote my own verse and everything,” he proudly reflects. “I even started helping other guys write their songs.” And with a strong musical foundation, it seemed that he found his calling. Of course street life and fast money has its consequences, and after serving four years on drug charges, Lil’ Shaun thought he left rap behind him and was willing to focus on making a living as a personal trainer. However, as he returned to his youthful dwellings, he learned that his team at Street Gang Entertainment kept grinding to keep the dream alive—even in the absence of their Captain. With the endorsement of heavy-hitters such as Tony “T-Luv” Davis, Lil’ Sean is already been revered as the one of the kings of the underground. “Stay Gettin’ Money” is his latest single under Bulletproof Records. As he continues his hustle spitting precision flows that fall from the dome seamlessly, Lil’ Shaun is constantly evolving into who he’s destined to become—a voice for the other side of the city. TRAVEL

Crazy About Capetown by Stacy H. Small For all of you who have South Africa on your wish list, NOW is the time to go. The dollar’s strong, the weather’s warm and sunny through March, and there’s an incredible range of things to do far and beyond the must-experience safari (from wine tasting to visiting local townships to hanging out with the South African penguins!). Not to mention, it’s the site of next year’s World Cup, and we can get you set up from hotels and flights to tickets to the Games. Whenever you go, start with a few days in Capetown, at the Cape Grace Hotel. Not only is the 121-boutique hotel perfectly located on the V&A Waterfront, but service is unbelievable, rooms were just totally redone, the water views are excellent, the Whisky Bar hopping, and dining at Signal, the hotel’s restaurant, is a must (the sole meuniere and the rib eye are among the priciest entrees at just $22-ish, half what either would cost at a top restaurant at home!) Honeymooners will love the romantic gifts the hotel provides for them nightly, and kids are also catered to (we love the pint-sized bathrobes and slippers laid out for them at night, and the African story-time held in their honor). Book a stay here through Elite Travel International and we’ll ensure VIP treatment by our friend Nigel Pace, the hotel GM. You’ll also enjoy lots of extra perks as our exclusive rates include daily breakfast, complimentary use of the hot spa facilities, 24-hour free internet access in the biz center, in-room work-out equipment, chauffered rides within 6 mile radius and your choice of a traditional afternoon tea for two or a glass of local Cape wine with snacks. 64

Another option, just beyond the central waterfront, is of the most unique, special and romantic hotels I have seen in a very long time. Part of the Tintswalo Collection, the year-old, 11-suite Tintswalo Atlantic overlooks the Atlantic Ocean from its location on scenic Chapman’s Peak road. Each oceanview suite is individually decorated and named after an island (our Seychelles-themed room featured aquas/natural hues, a fabulous bath with open shower, vintage-style tub, and unbelievable ocean views). Other hot spots represented through color themes and decor styles include the Caribbean, Greece, Italy, Madagascar, Africa, Bali and Turkey. The wow factor of the property extends throughout the public spaces, built from wood and glass to blend harmoniously with the natural environs. A lounge with overstuffed sofas/chairs and divine decor, a bar, wine cellar, dining room, an open, interactive chef’s kitchen, and the decktop heated Jacuzzi pool all share the same stunning sea views. The staff, including Ryno, the executive chef and his wonderful wife Melissa, will make you feel as though you are an old friend within no time. Trust us, you won’t want to leave. Book through Elite Travel International and rates include daily breakfast, the first night’s dinner (custom-created just for you if you like), VIP treatment and of course, some nice extra perks! The latest push comes from Verizon Wireless and Motorola, whose Droid is a good alternative for those seeking a feature-packed smart phone with a full keyboard and strong wireless service. The Droid stands out from the crowd of iPhone wannabes with a slim but weighty body, noticeably angular look and large touch screen. Its 3.7-inch screen is bigger than the iPhone’s 3.5-inch one, and the extra real estate really makes it easier to navigate Web pages and play with applications. It also offers plenty of space on the home screen (and two side screens that you swipe to see) for software “widgets” that give a quick look at such things as your friends’ Facebook status updates or the song you’re playing on the built-in music player. And the Droid’s cost is comparable with the iPhone’s - $200, after a rebate, with a twoyear service contract with Verizon Wireless, its exclusive U.S. distributor. The Droid is the first phone to include a cool, free mapping application from Google that can announce turn-by-turn directions.Like other Android phones, the Droid has a voice search function. It can be used, for instance, to help navigate routes when you’re in the Maps Navigation application. Saying “Navigate to

The Droid’s big screen makes for a nice viewfinder, and a small menu of camera settings slides out from the left side of the screen so you can adjust the white balance and use different color effects. You’ll have plenty of space to store the photos you take, too, because the Droid includes a 16 gigabyte microSD memory card. Motorola has been struggling to come up with a phone that comes close to matching the popularity of 2005’s Razr, and the Droid is the latest indication that Motorola is really trying to figure out what consumers want. It’s also one of the most promising challengers to the iPhone, a field that now includes Palm’s Pre and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Storm2. Some Verizon Wireless customers have been holding out on getting the iPhone - available in the U.S. only through AT&T - because it means switching away from a service they are already used to and like. For them, the Droid might be a good reason to stick with that wireless provider. Even if you aren’t already using Verizon, if you’re not swayed by the iPhone, you might fall for the Droid.

“soo-ee!”

calling all immune boosters

As we hear more and more information in the media about the H1N1 virus better known as the “swine flu”. It can be difficult to not fill with panic about the possibility of this being the worst flu season in decades. If you yourself are not afraid, trust me, your grandparents, friends who are pregnant, or those who have small children probably are. You can take comfort in knowing that you do have some control over the likelihood of becoming ill from the flu. Let’s talk about why. Disease is the end result of a body unable to resist the stressors from its environment. This means that even though in many ways it is difficult to control our exposure we can greatly control our body’s resistance. Maintaining the health of our nervous system (communicator), immune system (identifier), and digestive system (eliminator) is like preparing the body to identify, attack, and eliminate foreign invaders just as a precision military tactic. Not only that but as we give the systems an opportunity to work the body will remember each past battle and can learn from the experience to help protect from future illness. Here are some tips for boosting your body’s own immunity. First, you can avoid things that are known to suppress the immune system which include excessive sugar, stress, and body fat stores. Sounds easy right? Well, if these have become part of your everyday life it might be a tough place to start, but the great news is all three of these you have to power to control. Secondly, 66

you can minimize the use of medications when possible. Many common prescription and over the counter drugs will deplete the body of essential nutrients. For example, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen are associated with depleting folic acid, vitamin C, and iron. Antibiotics are associated with depleting some of the B vitamins, Vitamin C, E, K, Potassium and Zinc. Don’t forget although many women don’t consider oral contraceptives as medication, they are associated with depleting the B vitamins including B12, Vitamin C, Folic Acid, Magnesium, and Zinc. Third, you should begin to incorporate more healthy habits including: uninterrupted sleep essential for healing, adding more fruits and vegetables into your diet, a probiotic which are healthy bacteria that live in the digestive tract (the most concentrated form you can buy as a liquid, powder, or capsule), and consider some of the herbal alternatives as well that are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. Don’t forget the simple things too. Sage, rosemary, thyme, onions, ginger, garlic, and turmeric are not only amazing to enhance the flavor of your cooking, but antiviral in nature and have been used to boost our immunity throughout the ages. FINANCE

If we do not act boldly and swiftly a bad situation could become dramatically worse. At the beginning of the year, some people were skeptical about the impact of President Barack Obama's stimulus plan. Months later, the economic report card clearly shows that the stimulus plan has re-energized an economy that, at one point, seemed too bleak to see a ray of light or hope. The basic components of the stimulus plan were outlined by some of the following principals: 1. Provide an immediate tax cut for workers 2. Provide an immediate supplement to social security for low- and middle-income seniors. 3. Provide $10 billion in relief for state & local governments hardest-hit by housing crisis to prevent cuts in services such as health, education & infrastructure According to the BBC, the economic stimulus plan is worth 787 billion dollars. It is "a combination of measures designed to maximize on political support of tax cuts, additional spending and aid to US states" in dire need of rescue from an economic nightmare. The plan is stated to add an additional 3 million jobs into the economy, 35 billion dollars to stimulate house spending and 11 billion dollars to reduce the cost of buying a car. According to the Obama plan, the stimulus package is projected to inject 75 billion dollars of stimulus into the economy by getting money in the form of tax cuts and direct spendings to the people who need it the most. Some Republicans argued that the plan

was too costly and would increase the budget deficit. In an early year press conference, President Obama explained the urgency to pass the stimulus plan by appealing to congress. The commander in chief said, " If we do not act boldly and swiftly a bad situation could become dramatically worse." The economic stimulus plan was the solution to avoid a depression that economists were predicting could erupt if measures were not taken to deter the current recession. The country was at the highest peak of unemployment since 2001. Consumer spending and confidence had dropped to an astronomical low, and Obama's economic reform was outlined with measures of a quick reaction to a long-term goal that is repositioning the economy into a positive fold. Providing the urgent need necessary to stimulate the economy was needed in order to re-energize the market. In the state of Missouri, the benefits of the Stimulus plan are already taking shape as the unemployment rate is decreasing and more jobs are being created. As we enter into the end of the year it is safe to say that the forecast for the stimulus plan may have been clouded with uncertainty and raindrops of doubt. Now the remnants of bad economic weather and thunderstorms of a recession are transforming to brighter days.

Sweet treat

How do you like these apples? recipe: JONATHAN KRAFT Golden Delicious Apple Strudel, Serves 8 – (2 Strudels)

Recently at the TASTE of St.Louis, where Jonathan is the the Executive Chef and Culinary Competition Director, partnered with FARM AID (the National support Group for small local farmers; i.e. Willie Nelson and crew) and put on a cooking competition with a couple of local farmers. It just so happened that after the competition, he ended up with a half of a bushel of beautiful Golden Delicious Apples. Hmmm….what to do? After several minutes of deliberation, he decided to make his old favorite - Golden Delicious Apple Strudel with Sun Dried Cape Cod Cranberries and Gold Raisins, finished with Grand Marnier Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Whipped Cream. S T R U DE L

1 Combine Apples, Raisins, Cranberries, Brown

Sugar, Corn Starch and Cinnamon in Large Mixing Bowl.

2 Mix thoroughly to ensure no clumps of Brown

Sugar or Corn Starch. Remove packaging from Phyllo and gently lay out flat. Keep covered with damp towel if pastry dough is to be exposed for more than 1 minute…it will dry out very quickly.

3 Separate and layout 2 sheets of pastry then

brush evenly with clarified butter…any water in the butter will make it tear. Repeat this process twice so that you will have 6 layers of pastry… making sure the bottom stays nice and dry.

4 About 1/3rd of the way up from the bottom of

the sheets, lay out half of the filling lengthwise with the measuring cup. Gently pack filling

together to form a “Cigar” Shape. Filling should be about 3 inches in diameter and then delicately, but tightly, roll the pastry around the filling into a “Big Cigar”. 5 Once rolled, carefully transfer onto cookie sheet

and then generously brush with clarified butter. Then with a serrated knife, score slice marks about a half inch deep into the “Cigar” every 2 inches (on a slight bias). Recipe should make 2 nice sized Strudels.

6 Preheat oven to 350’F and Bake until Golden

Brown…about 25 to 30 Minutes. Remove and cool briefly. Slice with same knife on scored marks careful not to tear pastry.

When our friendly local grocery chain opened in the middle of downtown, everyone rejoiced, “finally downtown is going somewhere.” Downtown eaters probably haven’t taken a moment to look at the situation from the other perspective, from that of a business owner downtown, now competing against the corporate chain for lunch time patrons. Owner of Bubba Tea Cafe, Raymond Furgason offered DELUX a fresh angle on that perspective. Raymond’s involvement is two fold, because he’s also a downtown resident. He moved here over a year ago to open up his business. Being “the new guy in town,” he struggled to get his name out there and get business flowing, “Luckly downtown was treating me good. Within a year business was looking great.” And why shouldn’t it be? Bubba Tea Cafe is in a prime location on 10th Street, clean, colorful and inviting store front, selling this strange yet delicious concoction called bubba tea. Raymond also supports local artists, always boasting of new works on display. Things were going well, then the grocery chain moved in, and business was nearly cut in half. And its painfully obvious that Bubba Tea is not the only business suffering. Small shops are closing up. Raymond says, “It's a Little Big City; thats what I love about it.” Let's help it stay that way and support our business owners. Stop in for a wrap and a tea, and let Raymond know that DELUX readers support local businesses. He’s usually behind the counter. Bubba Tea Cafe, 417 N. 10th Street, 314.231.5282

FOOD, ART, MUSIC & CULTURE words by Jenn Carter image by Davide Weaver

Ninety-nine percent of the time, if told I need to go to city hall, I'm annoyed. Normally involves a fine, fee, or violation. But flip the script one night only for a few drinks, Illphonics concert, free food, live art. Now that's a better reason to hit up St. Louis' city hall. For three years now ArtDimenions, a local non-profit art organization, has been hosting an event that transforms city hall into a full blown party. This year the event will be better than ever, with concerts, followed by cooking demos, fashion shows, Indonesian dancers, Street Dimensions breakers and enough local art and wears to satisfy all your holiday shopping. As with any annual event, changes and improvements in the plans take this years event to another level. The second level of city hall to be more specific. The mezzanine will host Delux & Blacklabel's VIP section and the artist market, over looking both stages. visit artdimensions.org for more information and get your vip passes to enjoy this event DELUX style.
