SCHLAFLY BEER Schlafly’s flagship Pale Ale is a smooth, balanced, copper-colored session beer with mildly spiced flavor and aroma from the East Kent Goldings hops. The bready, lightly caramel malt complements the hint of fruitiness contributed by the London Ale yeast, making it satisfying and authentic; the perfect flagship beer for Schlafly. Sixteenth century brewers created amber beers by using a form of coal called coke to roast their grains. Coke burns hotter and more steadily than wood without imparting the foul odors from coal. It allowed brewers to produce caramel malts that were paler alternatives to the common brown porters. At about the same time, Flemish migrants introduced hops to English beers and soon this ale became the chosen style of England from the mid-16th century until the end of the 20th century. Today, brewers outside England have adopted the Pale Ale and made it one of the leading styles of the American craft beer movement.

CEDRICTHE ENTERTAINER ITS NO SECRET THAT CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER IS FROM ST. LOUIS. YOU COULD WALK THROUGH THE DELMAR LOOP AND SEE HIS STAR SHINING BRIGHTLY ON THE PAVEMENT. HE ALSO REPS HIS HOMETOWN WHETHER HE VERBALLY GIVES THE CITY A SHOUT OUT, DANCES, OR EVEN SPEAKS WITH THE STANDARD MID WEST SLANG. HE HASNT FORGOTTEN HIS ROOTS AS A PROUD PRODUCT OF THE POSITIVITY THAT IS GROWN HERE. His first stops when he hits the city are Goody Goody and his mom’s house. Coming up in a single parent household, he credits his mother with instilling respect and love in him. As funny as he is now, he was never a class clown growing up. In fact,
when asked he simply stated, “Momma didn’t play that. She was a school teacher so we grew up in a loving educated household. We knew to behave and always be respectful.” He took a rather low key status when walking the halls
of Berkeley High School. Sure he was funny then but he was more of the secret weapon that his friends would get when people started playing the dozens. As a proud Berkeley Bulldog he admitted that the tearing down of the old location made him feel some kind of way. Not only had he walked the halls as a student, he even went back and taught there for awhile. His dedication to the school is shown through his non profit, Cedric The Entertainer Charitable Foundation, Inc, which provides scholarships for local teens who attend the high school.

C
edric has been around for a while now, a true veteran and king of comedy, who cites Richard Pryor as the ultimate king of comedy. Richard’s ability to intertwine his real life events with laughter was something that Cedric admired. When asked who he would say his style of comedy is more like, he quickly admitted that he is more like the late Robin Harris. Harris was known for telling jokes in a funny uncle type of way. When you listen to Cedric perform, you feel as if you have known him all your life. His characters are someone that we all have encountered at some point in our life and that’s the brilliance behind the jokes.
Not only is he a comedian, he is a story teller who vividly paints a picture that we can all relate and laugh to.
With the future of comedy not as bright as it use to be he has high hopes for the up and coming comedian. His goal is to get more exposure to genuinely funny comedians that need to be seen more in the spotlight. He even has two new ones
opening up for his new comedy tour and states that St. Louis’ own, Jovan Bibbs, is someone that we all should be watching. As animated as Cedric is on the stage, you shouldn’t anticipate seeing him on a reality show anytime soon. Even though we all know him for busting a move or two, Dancing With The Stars, is nowhere in his near future, not even the far future. He’s not against the hustle of those that participate on them but it’s just not something that’s for him. His private life is just that, private. He takes pride in being a husband and a father. His off time is spent relaxing, taking the kids to the movies, or just enjoying the quiet. That’s not to say if you see him out in public he won’t shake your hand or even sign an autograph. He is very much a people’s person who loves to connect with his fans. With two solid decades and some change in the game, Cedric has several movies under his belt, as well as hosting several award shows. The 2011 Soul Train Awards were hosted by him and broke a Centric record as the highest watched show in the network’s history. There’s also a new sketch comedy show for Comedy Central in the works and die hard Ceddy fans will be happy to know, he is hoping to come back to sitcom television with a brand new series based off his guest appearance role on, Hot in Cleveland. He will play Rev. Boyce, a former r&b singer turned preacher whose wife will
be played by one time St. Louis native, Niecy Nash. The series hometown will be set in none other than, St. Louis. 2012 will prove to be a big year for Cedric the Entertainer. To celebrate his new endeavors he came home New Year’s Eve to kick off the Cedric Entertainer and Friends comedy tour, at the brand new Peabody Opera House. The energy that he receives from the St. Louis crowd is second to none. He reminded us all of why he was deemed, a king of comedy, with a hilariously new routine that kept the crowd laughing and in tears. His transition from teaching to stand up to sitcom to the big screen is worthy of all the accolades and praise. He is honored to have a huge platform that allows him to step into the lives of total strangers by doing what he loves. When all is said and done, his purpose in life is to keep it real cool, enjoy life, enjoy your neighbor, be convicted in values and try to give back as much as possible. With words of wisdom like that, a man can’t go wrong.
GTHANG @2GTHANG
Now introducing SAINT LOUIS NATIVE-- THE COMIC FORMALLY KNOWN AS GTHANG-- Gary G. Johnson. Now introducing Gary G. Johnson. Many know him as “G-Thang” the St. Louis native known for his raw onstage presence returned “home” recently with a new look and new name. Johnson who got into a comedy from a dare from Joe Torry, bombed on his first onstage performance at the Funny Bone, but says it motivated him because it hates to see his enemies laugh at him. That dare later turned into him hosting an weekly open mic on the same stage where he was once laughed off. Years later Johnson moved to LA after Guy Torry agreed to let him stay with him for a week but just 3 days into his stay, Guy saw him on stage woke him up the next morning and told him he needed to go back home. With his family as his motivation Johnson never gave up and adapted the west coast style of comedy by adding a little Hollywood lifestyle into a routine that often came with gimmicks.
After years of carrying his “sweat” towel on stage and getting called for acting jobs as the security officer, G-Thang wanted a change. After hanging out with Eddie Murphy last year, whom Johnson calls the ultimate King of Comedy he advised him to drop the gimmicks and focus on being funny. Armed with advice from a legend G-Thang decided it was time for a new look. Now he is in the gym at least 6 days a week and his results are obvious. With the new look came the new name, now the comedian who says “grown women are not going to put a nickname into their phone” goes by Gary G. Johnson. His style has even changed, he got rid of tennis shoes and jokingly says he even works out in Stacey Adams. Gary G. Johnson doesn’t have any plans on moving back to St. Louis soon but enjoys returning to his hometown and one of his first stops is visiting his mother’s store on Natural Bridge and can sometimes be caught
behind the counter working. As he brought in the new year as an opening act for Cedric The Entertainer at the Peabody Opera House, Johnson says its more pressure from your hometown. With a great hometown performance under his belt and move plans, and comedy special in the works Johnson says in 2012 he plans to unleash the dragon. PHOTO: LAWRENCE BRYANT STORY: JAMI DOLBY

DARIUS BRADFORD @DARIUSBRADFORD
Darius Bradford is definitely a comedian that continues to shine through. Bradford, 34, came up in the University City area of STL, where he learned of his love for comedy. A comedian was born inside of Bradford in 1993 when he placed second on the well renowned Def Comedy Jam on HBO. Looking up to STL’s very own Cedric the Entertainer, who was also his mentor at the beginning of his career, and the very funny Eddie Murphy, his comedy career first began. Bradford has been featured on Walter Latham’s Comedy After Dark, an online stand up broadcast. He still has many goals to reach in his career – write his own movie and to be cast in a movie, just to name a few. “I am looking for my movie moment”, exclaimed Bradford when asked about his future goals. His ultimate goal is to take comedy to a whole new level, much like the well known Tyler Perry. “I just love comedy itself – people who love what they do and understand what it’s all about”, was Bradford response when asked about other comedians he enjoys working with. For Bradford, comedy is not about punch lines. His comedy tells a story. “It’s real feel good comedy” said Bradford. He’s the type of comedian that talks up about people, since anyone can talk down on someone. “The front row is definitely where you want to be at one of my shows”, bragged Bradford. Something he feels everyone should know about him. “I absolutely don’t know how to do stand up per say, I just know how to tell my story. I just lucked up!”
“...I ACTUALLY CONSIDER In Bradford’s words “Real life, straight up, MYSELF A just SNEAKER honest to God I am getting started on where I want to be”. CONNOISSEUR... ” STORY: ASHLEY BROYLES
TAHIR MOORE @TAHIRMOORE
“I started in the church…” Tahir Moore, local comedian, started telling jokes in his home church. “The church crowd is one of the toughest crowds. They’re the most hypocritical. They act like they’re too holy to laugh!” Moore was a part of MTVs Yo’ Momma and also a featured comedian on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise, alongside Sinbad and J. Anthony Brown. “They’re quick to be like ‘Brother, will you bless us with a few minutes’, but they don’t wanna pay you. I’m like ‘Hey, I need to tithe too!’ [laughs].” Originally from East St. Louis, Moore got his start around town, hosting at different churches and shows. “I started hosting Greek step shows, and pretty soon, word got around that I was a good host.” Which led him to the stage…the comedy stage that is. “The first time I did comedy was at the Funny Bone in Wesport. It was open mic night.” But his funny didn’t start there. “I’ve always known I was funny, but society tells us that we should play by the books. And I did, up until a couple of years ago. I just decided to go into [comedy] full body and wholeheartedly – I put my all into it.” December 25, 2011 is a day he’ll never forget. “That was the day where I thought ‘You know what? I can do this’. It was like an epiphany.” He was performing at Javon Bibb’s birthday show when he realized what it was. “I had a lot of new material that I was holding onto because I didn’t know if people would accept it or not. I have the imagination of an 11 year old [laughs] – my jokes can either be really hilarious or really dark. I didn’t know if people would laugh or not.” But he did it. “[The show] worked out marvelously! I finally realized what other people had been seeing in me for so long.” Dude is making moves. “I’m currently creating an HBCU comedy tour, What’s Dollars With No Sense, for the fall. I’m partnering with Edward Jones and some credit unions to encourage minority students to open accounts.” Facebook him. Tweet him. Check him out. STORY: PHILIP BLANKS
CARMEN @CARMENCRAZY
First and foremost, Carmen the Comedian, does not want people to think that she is just a pretty face. She’s actually funny without having to be raunchy with her jokes. Sure, she’s probably told one a time or two but that’s not what her stand up is about. She prefers to bring something fresh and her everyday reality, which includes her kids, dating and her life as a drama queen. Born, raised and a proud product of St. Louis, she received her start in Westport at the Funny Bone. After her first performance she went home and studied videos of Roseanne Barr, Bill Cosby, and Martin Lawrence. Not only where they funny for her to watch, she admired their drive to turn stand up into a multi million dollar business. Every week she would get on stage and make people laugh. Her ability to work the crowd turned into her hosting the weekly comedy show at the old, Two Brothers nightclub. She would later link up with Arvin Mitchell who encouraged her change of scenery to LA to work on making herself a nationally known name. After only two weeks in the new city, she found herself on stage at the Laugh Factory. It wasn’t long before reps for Martin Lawrence, discovered her and hired her for the Martin Lawrence Presents First Amendment. Just when she thought she couldn’t reach a more humbling experience, the military came calling for some laughter. She was now international, touring in Kuwait, Dubai and Iraq. Comedy has been good for Carmen. Not only does she find joy in performing on stage, she’s enjoying being able to finally see the fruits of her labor. She’s living comfortably and will continue to pray for a calendar filled with dates. Carmen will be performing at Blueberry Hill, February 5th. Her plans are to come back to St. Louis, once a month for small intimate shows. STORY: JAMI DOLBY

JOVAN BIBBS @JOVANBIBBS
Bringing to the stage one of Saint Louis’ funniest funny men – Jovan Bibbs. Born and raised in the STL, Jovan hit the stage and received his first standing “O” at age 23, at the Funny Bone. “Be the kinda funny your crowd can relate to. You can’t be ‘hood funny’ everywhere you go.” Influenced by his idol, Red Foxx, and others like Richard Prior, Cedric The Entertainer , Robin Harris and Mike Epps, Jovan found his love for stand up at a young age. Using a lamp with the shade removed, he would perform fake stand-up routines with his god brother . “I just wanted to be on stage.” With help along the way from hometown guys like Darius Bradford, Corey Holcomb, Cedric The Entertainer, and Donna Murray, Jovan jumped into the stand-up game head first. With the good comes the bad - a performance at Jesse Taylor’s room was his first experience with a tough crowd. “I got boo’d horrifically!” But this didn’t discourage him from continuing his climb to the top. He would go on to open for Tommy Davidson, perform on BET’s Comic View and, more recently, audition for the new season of In Living Color, among other things. “You have to go 100%! No matter if you’re performing in front of thousands or 4 or 5 people.” Although a highly desired hometown hour special is not currently in the works, you can still find him doing his monthly show “Class Clown”, and hopefully you’ll see him on TV very soon. Under new management with Terrence Reynolds, he hopes to avoid some of the flaws from the past. And he has a simple message for promoters… “If you aint got the money, don’t book me!” STORY: DANIER LANE DELUX-MAG.COM FEBRUARY 2012 | 35
DEANDRE WHITNER @DEANDREWHITNER
Hailing from STL, Deandre Whitner is not one to be messed with... comically that is! Whitner has been entertaining people from the time he was young. Growing up he had many influences, ranging from his family, to the comedians that graced his television screen on Comic View. “I got some serious characters in my family, you just don’t understand! As far as comedians I watched and respected while I was growing up, my favorites were; Eddie Murphy, Damon Wayans, Jamie Foxx, Martin Lawrence, and can’t forget Ced the Entertainer.” There were many situations that made him think that he might be funny, but there were two situations that truly stuck out in his memory. “I remember a time in high school, on the first day of school, we were in math class. I leaned over, told a girl a joke and she burst out laughing to the point where she asked the teacher to move her seat.” His run in with his mother sealed his comedic future. “I made my momma laugh so hard she literally pee’d on herself. I guess she got too weak! She stopped walking up our steps, sat down, and let loose. I figured either I’m funny or she’s lazy.” But not all jokes go the way he plans. “In STL you ALWAYS have to bring your A game every night, not B-, not B+, but A!” One of the reasons why he always brings his A game is because early on in his career, he was lucky enough to participate in Laffapalooza, produced by Jamie Foxx and Comedy Central. “It was a big deal to me. Just having the opportunity to perform, network with other comics from around the country, and meeting comics who I looked up to, was an all-around good experience.” If you would like to see Deandre Whitner up close and personal, make sure you catch him at the St. Louis Unplugged – a series of events held a different locations each month, showcasing different artists. MAURICE G @THEMAURICEG
“Omega Psi Phi till the day I die!” Certified comedian and Q-Dogg Maurice G, born and raised in STL, is among the likes of other STL comedians, such as Cedric the Entertainer, Joe Torrey, and Guy Torrey, among others. “I went to college to be a Q-Dogg [laughs]. I went to Howard….for a party [laughs]. I didn’t attend no class [laughs]!” Fall of ’94 pledgee from the University of District Columbia [across the way from Howard…smh], he got his feel for comedy when he was in high school. “I was always silly. I got started doing comedy because my momma was like, ‘Boy look, you wanna eat, you better do something!’, and I wasn’t 16, and it was too cold to go outside passing out papers [laughs]. ” He started out hosting step shows and talent shows for HBCU’s, and would later go on to showcase his making-peoplelaugh skills on BET’s Comic View and also Def Comedy Jam. “It started out real slow, I was doing funerals and burials – man, I was killing ‘em [laughs].” [PAUSE] “Nah for real, I been in the game for about 5 years now – just trying to make it!” Dude is hungry…for success, that is. “When I first started doing comedy, I couldn’t pay people to laugh at me. I used to pay my frat brothers, be like, ‘Aye man, just sit in the front and laugh [at my jokes]’ [laughs].” But seriously, this guy is funny as hell! “I realize that wherever you go, you gotta cater to your crowd! You gotta do what they like.” Good advice for upcoming artists. “Don’t let nobody tell you, ‘You can’t do it!’” “If it’s really in your heart and it’s really what you wanna do, stick with it!” Watch him work! DWAYNE BESS To grow and change my life starts with the desire to change others Deep right? That’s how Dwayne Bess does it. Philanthropist. Motivational Speaker. Author. Growth Coach. This guy is that deal. “My life is predicated on the understanding that the key to my life is in other people – helping other people.” And this is the philosophy he has been living his life by every day. “My mother was one of the most humble and selfless people I know. She taught me how important it was to be selfless at an early
age.”And being selfless is just the beginning. “[Being selfless] starts with us being grateful and thankful for what we have. I had to realize the more that I gave to others, the more it returned back to me tenfold.” Bess specializes in empowering others to eclipse their own potential by selflessness and interdependence. Through his teachings on growth and embracing change, he allows you to capture the sheer essence of your desired self by embracing the Proclivity to Expand, one of his philosophies. “Don’t get me wrong – I don’t fix girlfriend/ boyfriend problems [laughs]. That’s not what I do. But if you want to be a better man/ woman in order to be a boyfriend/girlfriend to your partner, I can help you do that.” Bess also speaks to businesses and corporations, such as Monsanto, Washington University, University of Arizona, with his spill on How to Become a Person of Influence. “When a person can understand and master the power of influence, trust, and integrity, what happens is a 360 gain of influence.” As influential of a man as he is, Bess works heavily with different charities and nonprofits
providing, not only considerable donations from his earnings, but also implanting knowledge to increase credibility. “I started working with a lot of nonprofits, like the Urban League, to help the people increase their skill sets and interviewing skills.” Bess also maximizes potential on another philosophy – a book entitled The Perpetual Hand. “[The Perpetual Hand] signifies all the people doing things in your life and helping you that you don’t even know about it. Like when somebody is saying something nice about you to someone else and you don’t even know. It reverts back to the lifestyle of helping people!” This phenomenal book, along with his other motivational works, can be found on his website – www.dwaynebess.com, where you can also seek him for personal or business coaching. “Change your mind. Change a person. Create history.” STORY: PHILIP BLANKS

THE TRUE FACTS Story: Planned Parenthood of St. Louis
Now that 2012 has begun, everything that happened in 2011 is in the past right? Wrong. No matter how your past year ended, you can control how this one begins. Don’t let your decisions from 2011 affect your life in 2012, or every year after that. Whether that means getting tested, getting emergency contraception (the morning-after pill), or just scheduling a routine well-woman’s exam for your favorite lady parts, Planned Parenthood is happy to oblige your every need to ring in the New Year right. And gentlemen, do not think you for a second you have been left out of the equation, there are plenty of services we offer for your benefit as well. Here are some things you can do to make your 2012 the best year yet. Sexually active or not, you should be sure to get an annual check up. Ladies, we offer well-woman’s exams which include a Pap smear, breast exams, cervical cancer screenings, and testing and treatment for urinary tract infections (UTI’s). Men, our health services for you include — but definitely aren’t limited to — testicular and prostate cancer screenings. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men ages 20-34, and prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 men in America alone, so getting a screening sooner rather than later in your 2012 is the safer choice. Now for those of you who are sexually active, the key to a healthy sex life is having the right information and the tools. Have a question about safer sex, birth control, or STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections)? Our trained staff at Planned Parenthood can answer you burning questions. In addition to routine exams we also offer birth control options for women and men. There are many types of birth control, and every type has its own benefits and disadvantages. The important thing is finding one that works for your body, your lifestyle and your budget. Plus there are benefits of some of the methods like condoms to reduce the risk of getting STIs. Whether you choose a condom for that Saturday night crush or something like an IUD (intrauterine device) for that long-term relationship, Planned Parenthood has the options you need to make those choices a reality. Along with being safe, you should also get tested for STIs every year, so start your new year on the right note and get tested. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-230-PLAN (7526) or visit our website at www.plannedparenthood.org/stlouis

WHAT’S UP DOC?! PHOTOGRAPHY: LAWRENCE BRYANT
WORDS: DR JENNFER McCLEARY
Q: A:
I was recently on my feet for almost eight hours in 3” inch heels. My toes are still numb two days later. What should I know about this problem and how do I prevent it?
The human foot is made up of 26 bones. Most of those bones have only a slight bit of motion between which is held together by connective tissue called ligaments. That means that on top of the major flexion and extension of the ankle and toes, that there are many other small joints and muscles which allow us to withstand a great deal of stress and strain when they are all functioning properly. Most of us are on our feet for so many activities most of the waking hours (standing, exercising, socializing, cooking, cleaning, bathing, etc) and in our society, the majority of the population spends most of that time in some sort of shoes which can weaken the intrinsic muscles of the feet. Our shoe selection can alter the alignment and the center of gravity of the body which in like an insult to an already weak foot. Common conditions of the foot that can cause pain and/or numbness are: metatarsalgia, subluxation, arthritis, stress fractures, and a Morton’s Neuroma. Stiletto heels and boots are an extreme stressor to the joints of the feet and when worn in excess can lead to an abnormal gait, foot deformity, as well as ankle, knee or low back problems. For an accurate diagnosis you should have an evaluation from someone who specializes in these kinds of conditions such as a chiropractor, podiatrist, orthopedist, or physical therapist. If you are having issues with your feet now, or would like to prevent them in the future, consider incorporating these simple tips: 1. Wearing gel toe spacers- These are an inexpensive ($5-$10 for two) way to maintain the alignment of the “big” toe and create space between the bone of the mid-foot. I wear these whenever I jog and routinely in flat shoes. 2. Yoga- Yoga practice emphasizes awareness of our body. In proper standing postures, you should have all five toes spaced and extended pressing the balls and heels into the floor. This creates a small arch in the mid-foot which will strengthen our feet as well as improve our balance and posture. 3. Reflexology Massage- This is a natural technique that has been practiced for thousands of years as way to relieve stress, increase circulation in the lower body, decrease swelling in the feet, and in some cases improves other body functions. orey Black is man of many talents. Poet, Lyricist, Rapper, MC – some of the words that have been used to describe him. But he doesn’t want to limit himself to any one category. “Labels are kind of lame. I don’t want to be put in a box, so I guess that’s why I don’t care much for titles. If anything, label me an artist.” Black has been writing and performing since he was 17, but felt he really hit his stride in 2007 while in the marines. “I would hit up open mic’s, and one night, I went to a coffee house expecting to rhyme, but it was poetry. I signed the list anyway and I took one of my rhymes and “broke it down” on stage. When I got off the stage, the host pulled me to the side and told me he’d never heard a rapper do spoken word. That’s when I decided to hone my skills as a spoken word artist.” Black is best known for his song “Finger in My Nose”, a track that he used to get on everyone’s radar. “Finger in My Nose was my jingle. everyone’s attention. However, I am best known for my poetry”. He’s performed poetry at weddings, recorded monologue for albums, and spoken with troubled teens. More people are able to connect with Black through his poetry than anything else. For Valentine’s Day, Black schools us on how you can show that special person how you feel about them. “Just write down your true feelings. If nothing comes to mind, find a song that makes you think of your loved one and write down the lyrics, or even better, write down her lyrics to her favorite love song”. “I try to shower my girlfriend with affection. I try to be random and spontaneous in our relationship. I write down how she makes me feel and what I think of her. That is poetry in itself”.

jibbs DELUX recently caught up with "Mr. Chain Hang Low" himself, JIBBS. Check out what he's been up to... Where have you been these last couple of years? I’ve been working. Still doing shows, but mainly focusing on being a better artist. I just needed some time to grow and become who I wanted to be. Being JIBBS is very important to me. I want to show the world a real person, not a manufactured entertainer conforming to the hype. My new mixtape #Brag21 is focused on my experiences and becoming a man, also having words of wisdom from my grandfather on the skits.

You were 15 when you first came out. How did you handle the fame and fortune? It’s been a great experience, but a long journey at the same time – good and bad. I had a rebellious period, but I was lucky to have my family with me at all times. It’s been a learning process – one that I will never regret or forget.
So what can people expect from JIBRAG in the future?
How did you come up with the Mixtape title for #Brag21?
Where can people find Jibbs online?
One thing Jibbs know how to do well is brag, swag and lag [laughs] – and another nick name I go by is Jibrag, which is Jibbs + Brag. A lot of people in my circle call me Brag for short because that’s what I’m good at, and I just turned 21, so I wanted to make an announcement that Jibbs is no kid anymore... #Brag21 [LOL]
[Laughs] I’m going to say “hits” because I’m a very good song writer and I can make anything from an R&B smash to a Hip Hop classic. So just expect good music from Jibbs.

VEGA BREAK PHOTOGRAPHY: LAWRENCE BRYANT
WORDS: ASHLEY BROYLES
Producer. Song writer. Artist. Aspiring actor. Entrepreneur. All the words that describe Orlando Rowe, better known to us as Vega Heartbreak – the 24 year old STL star on the rise. Vega spent most of his childhood in the University City area of Saint Louis. After his junior year of high school, he relocated to the Riverview Garden area where he finished out his high school career. He has been working on his career in the music world since he was around ten years old, when his brother Bradd Young had a studio put into his house. Being so young, no one would listen to his input on the producer side of things so he began his rapping career. “See I am a momma’s boy, I have watched my mom all my life go to work every day, as a Rehabilitation Nurse, and it would just be good to know that she no longer has to work,” Vega exclaimed when asked about what inspired him. Most may know Vega Heartbreak from the Rally song, which is actually in works to be an official Cardinal Nation theme song. Vega is not like most up and coming rappers in the Saint Louis area. He has broken through and worked with headliners such as Jay Z, Drake, Maxwell, Kanye West, and the list goes on. “It’s a lifestyle, my alter ego,” the very single Vega explained when asked what is Heartbreak all about. “I am all about Progression”, which in so many words explains that he is all about moving forward. Backtracking is not an option. Vega will accept that his career has peaked the day that he is nominated for a Grammy Award in Production and Artistry in the same night. Vega, who is very goal oriented and he knows where he is headed, refuses to stop until he is the headliner that we all wait in line for tickets to go see.

CHEF JOHN JOHNSON “ I see plates as paintings – I see the foods as pastels.” John Johnson, Executive Chef of Lumiére Place Casino & Hotel and River City Casino, explains the vision behind his craft. “I like blending things together.” Responsible for 10 of STL’s best destination restaurants, including Stadium Sports Bar & Grill, Asía, 1904 Steakhouse, and the Beerhouse, Johnson is one of the important people. “Pinnacle’s philosophy fits into mine. We have a good marriage. They’re allowing me to make the food a destination and a separate entity from the rest of the casino and that’s what I’m trying to do.” Originally from Charlotte, NC, he dropped out of college and started cooking. And he hasn’t looked back. “I was brought here to open River City and we had only 60 days to open it. I’m actually surprised how people in the Midwest eat. I
was thinking a lot more along the lines of meat and potatoes [laughs].” Pork being amongst one of his favorite things to cook, Johnson has quickly taken the art of cooking to an even higher plateau. “I constantly want to find out how I can make things more productive or how can I push it to the next level.” Johnson’s newest creation, a deconstructed gumbo ball [pictured], loosely titled The Crystal Ball, features a continuous steaming technique that resembles a science experiment. “We’re going to fix a bunch of these for the Mayor’s Mardi Gras Ball and just stack them up. The guests are going to go crazy [laughs].” If that’s not enough, Johnson plans on creating a culinary club within the property, where foodies, like himself, can talk about
food together and build their culinary skills. “I’m really proud of this. I learn from everybody. Everyone that has touched my life culinary-wise is going to [be a part of this].” This year, be on the lookout for cutting edge menu revisions and culinary creations from STL’s own Top Chef. He’s far from finished. “I’ll be 50 this year. Most people are looking to find a place to do their last 10 years [prior to retirement], I’m looking for something to take on. I want to be like Jerry Rice – the last man standing [laughs].” STORY: PHILIP BLANKS

blondie's coffee & wine bar “Why not do a coffee shop in the day and wine bar at night?” That’s what entrepreneur and part-owner Kathleen McGowan came up with for Washington Ave’s newest sweet spot, Blondie’s Coffee and Wine Bar. At the corner of Washington and 13th, Blondie’s brings a flirty, sophisticated feel to the vibrant downtown strip. “The name was challenging to agree upon with my brothers [laughs]. My dad used to call me the Blonde Bomber growing up
because I was blonde, so when it came time for a name, one of my brothers suggested Blondie’s. But I wasn’t dying my hair back to blonde [laughs].” McGowan, an obvious brunette now, allows the coffee shop/wine bar to pay homage to the beauty of the blonde. “The whole decoration theme is based off of the blonde color scheme. Everything from the walls to the light fixtures to chairs is in different shades of yellow, gold and brown.” Even the signature drink list features an ode to the blondes. “We have a Lauren Bacall, a Uma Thurman… [and of course a Marilyn Monroe].” One of the more popular drinks is an original concoction called Blondie Got Back [PAUSE]. “It’s made with a pineapple and jalapeno infused Herraduras Tequila, which we infuse in-house, Aperol, which has a sweet flavor, Tuaca, which is a vanilla and caramel flavored liquor, and orange juice. We call it
Blondie Got Back because it starts off sweet and then ends with a jalapeno kick – it’s got back [laughs].” Aside from dozens of signature martinis and dessert drinks, Blondie’s also offers 30 wines by the glass and 60 wines by the bottle, and over 25 specialty beers with 4 on tap. “Most of the guys are impressed by the selection of Belgian beers we have here. We’ve already gotten rave reviews for our beer listings.” And the beer isn’t the only thing receiving the rave reviews. The affordable food menu is just as exciting, if not more. “Our seared beef tenderloin is the most popular item on the menu. It’s amazing!” Offering a quick service pick-up counter for breakfast and lunch, and a sit-down service for dinner, Blondie’s is introducing STL to a new trend in restaurant versatility. “I just want to get things going and get popular, and then open a few more Blondie’s throughout the city.” Story: Philip Blanks

As a child, her mother often took her out to different areas of Saint Louis to show her all the opportunities available for her future, which lead to the introduction of modeling and beauty pageants . After going to school for writing and graduating with a criminal justice degree, Mocha went into the field of social work. She enjoyed the opportunity to help others and watch them grow, but with a young daughter and limited financial support, she needed more. After receiving numerous ideas from friends, she gave promotions a shot. Surrounding herself with winners, she began interning and assisting with events, like “Martini Mondays” ,“Eye Candy Fridays” ,“Raw Sugar” and also became S.L.I.M.’s assistant. You can find her at the Loft on Saturdays or at the “Got Lyrics” open mic event, held every 1st Thursday of the month. She’s also a writer for the Whirl‘s “Coffee Talk”. Shes one of the nicest, caring and energetic people you will ever meet.
