KEN AUSTIN’S
TEQUILA AVION YES! ITS REAL Story: Philip Blanks
DELUX caught up with the mastermind behind the exclusive Avión Tequila brand, Ken Austin, to talk about his fresh, new tequila taking over the world. As smooth as it is, you can’t deny the shit is real. Define Avión Tequila. My definition was to change the way people felt about tequila. My goal is to redefine tequila and make it less about being tequila and more about it being a fine spirit – one that is smooth and delicious – two terms that aren’t usually used to describe tequila. The secret recipe is the way that we take the sweet parts of the Agave and remove the bitters [during] the cooking process. We have a unique filtration system that gives you the sweet agave flavor on one side and smooth experience on the other. I wanted to make a tequila for a woman so she wouldn’t have to make the awful tequila face [laughs]. How long has Avión Tequila been around? We launched the brand in New York, July 2010 – literally 16 months ago. So it’s still a baby [laughs]. How do you feel about the tequila market here in STL? Why does STL need Avión? I think it’s a great market. People are always looking for new things, innovation. Consumers deserve better quality and innovation and creativity. What Avión has done is given [tequila] an injection of life, making the other brands work to figure out how to make their product better! Describe a person who enjoys Avión Tequila. Take a picture of yourself, take a picture of my wife, take a picture of a quality-conscious, brand-conscious person that loves luxury. Avión does not discriminate – men, women, Hispanics, African American Americans. It’s for everyone. How do YOU drink Avión Tequila? Intravenously [laughs]! It really depends on my mood – if I want to mix a margarita, or if I want pineapple juice. My favorite is adding fresh watermelon juice and lime juice. Sometimes I’ll even put Avión Anejo in a brandy sifter and drink it straight.

“THRIFTING” FOR THE SAAVY FASHIONISTA story: Sande Stevenson photos: Lawrence Bryant
What is Thrifting you ask? Long story short, it is the act of shopping at a local Thrift store or Resale shop with the intent of finding clothing and other fashionable accessories for super cheap. (Ok so that wasn’t the “dictionary” version of it but you’ll get the drift as you read further.) Shopping at your local Goodwill or resale shop is one of the best ways to find clothing, accessories and even shoes at super cheap prices… and these prices are cheaper than typical “sale” prices ya’ll! I mean, where else can you find a Blazer for $4.00? Now, keep in mind most of the items you will see are second-hand items but don’t be scared! Trust me, it is worth every bit of the trip and your pocketbook will be happy you did it. As you browse the racks of clothing just use your imagination. For example, you may come across a blazer with really “dated” buttons on it...keep in mind buttons can be changed and for pennies on the dollar! A blazer that would normally cost $100.00 or more could cost you a grand total of $4.00 plus the cost of buttons and a needle to sew them on! I personally just recently bought 16 work blouses, 2 belts and a blazer for a GRAND TOTAL of…wait for it…$69.00! Yes, ya’ll! It can be done! Now don’t get it twisted…I, too, was a little nervous about “Thrifting” because of the pre-conceived notions I had in my head of wearing second-hand clothing and my pre-conceived vision of what the thrift store itself would look like. Long gone are the days where a Thrift Store is located in a dingy basement of a church…Thrift Stores are now either Free-Standing buildings or located in Strip malls and they are also very organized with each type of clothing having its own section so you can browse easier. SCORE! So DON’T BE SCURRRD! Trust me, you will LOVE what you find and be back for more! Just take a few friends with you, take your time and use your imagination when browsing the many items you’ll come across. I’m ADDICTED to Thrifting and you will be too! Oh yeah…one quick note before I let you go…Make sure to either launder your Thrift Store finds or send them to the Dry Cleaners before you wear them. Ok guys, GET TO THRIFTING! If you’d like to see more of the work-related pieces and Blazers I found at my local Thrift Store and what they look like on, I invite you to check out my Fashion/Styling Vlog at www.Youtube.com/ TheSocialiteLife. THE MAN ON THE MOON
As the General Manager of the Moonrise Hotel, he has one of the most photographed staircases in the world! Martin Pittman has come full circle in the unique, boutique hotel business – and he’s only just getting started… 24 | DELUX Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011
“I have the coolest job in St. Louis!” Martin Pittman, the general manager of the Delmar Loop’s Moonrise Hotel, is the MAN! He’s been in the hotel business for over 18 years, helping to reestablish smaller, underperforming hotels. “I started working in small, individual boutique hotels, [where] I earned the reputation as a turnaround expert. I’ve been from California, to North Carolina, to Georgia – in 18 years, I’ve lived in 7 different cities.” “I went to New Orleans to help rebuild a hotel that was destroyed by Katrina. I got it up and running in 7 months.” It was that perseverance that made in one of the most wanted – especially here in STL. “I joined the Omni Hotel in 2007. There was a culture shift in the Omni hotel, and they needed my leadership style to turn around the team and grow the hotel here. I did two turnaround projects here.” And then he became the Man on the Moon. “I wanted to get back to my roots of a truly unique hotel and boutiques. They were looking for someone to take this hotel to the next level. They were looking for someone with the significant hotel knowledge here in St. Louis. It was literally a match made in the Moon [laughs].” And so began the revolution known as the Moonrise Hotel. “St. Louis was as exciting as watching the grass grow [laughs]. Everything was nationally branded hotels – Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and Ritz Carlton. We opened in April of 2009, and the city has never experienced anything like this. There wasn’t anything remotely close to [the Moonrise].” “It’s unique and one-of-a-kind as a hotel – everything was designed as a one of a kind item specifically for this hotel. If you stay at the moonrise, you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.” With 125 rooms, the Moonrise is truly a boutique hotel. Catering also to business travelers, corporate groups, celebrities and such, you never know who you might end up bumping into. “You could be here with a family visiting for the weekend or it could be with CEO of a Fortune 500 company – or it could even be with a famous Rock Star in town for a concert. It’s outstanding!”
25 | DELUX Magazine NOVEMBER 2011
And the design is definitely Lunar Chic! “Space, Moon, Astronauts? This hotel is designed with everything dealing with the moon and the solar system.” “We have actual items on display that have been on the moon. We have a posture of a girl sitting on a cigarette-smoking moon! Where else are you gonna find that at [laughs]? It’s truly unique. “One thing that I live by and that is absolutely crucial: I may work in a hotel and be in the hotel business, but at the end of the day, I am in the experience business. This hotel is an experience. That’s the forefront of everything that I do. The uniqueness of this place and the 50 other people that work here is that you’re going to get an experience when you interact with this hotel.” And he’s no ordinary guy either. “My cell phone number is printed on our business cards. Any guest can contact me at any time. I’m that kinda guy. My cell phone is on 24 hours a day. The only time my cell phone is not on is when I’m on the airplane [laughs].” And that’s how it goes down! “I love this city! I’ve been here for 4 years and I consider STL my town. People just don’t have fun in their own backyard.” “I’m so passionate about this city and this hotel – that’s why I’m here. I’ve come full circle in the unique boutique hotel business. I plan on being here for a long time.” “This is home for me. “

If you’ve ever been to an elite event in St. Louis, then you’ve probably been in the company with Nick Loftis and the Greedy Genius gang. Upon first glance, Loftis is a clearly a cool kid who clearly makes his own rules. His very entrance into a venue makes a statement and people take notice—immediately. CEO of an ever-growing international sneaker empire; Loftis has made more of an impact in the fashion industry before the age of 30 than most aspiring designers make in their entire careers.
IT
was through his quest to express creativity through alternative outlets that revealed to him that his attraction to fashion was one that would not be denied. Loftis didn’t know when he was hustling t-shirts in the halls of his D.C. high school, that he was preparing himself for his future in fashion. It wasn’t until he migrated back to the origin of his being that he’d meet a friend who would change his life forever.
Born in St. Louis, but raised in D.C., Loftis returned to St. Louis to begin his college career at Maryville University, playing soccer. He soon met a young man who mirrored his mission and within a couple of months, they developed an idea to create a clothing line that would catapult them into a realm beyond their beliefs. “We put our limited financial resources that we had between the two of us and bought a hundred t-shirts.” Loftis said when speaking of his humble beginnings. “When we started, I was 18. Yomi was 19 or 20 years old. We were driven by passion. We didn’t have any money to talk about. We were really driven by ambition. That struggle we went through for five years prior to signing our licensing deal in 2000 with Vokal.” Vokal—the brand that became synonymous with the rapper Nelly—gained international attention as Nelly’s fame increased. With over $25 million in sales during its short run; it was Vokal that unleashed the adventures of big-business for Loftis who soon learned an important lesson about the fashion industry about deals and distribution which lead to a painful decision. “Eventually, we shut down Vokal and started Apple Bottoms”. Although Apple Bottoms is still considered successful, the women’s line wasn’t enough to satisfy Loftis’s insatiable appetite for success. It was his passion that allowed him to pursue fashion; however, his experience in this unforgiving industry allowed him to open his eyes and conquer another quest—greatness in the shoe game. Transitioning from apparel to a platform with footwear as its primary focus wasn’t tough for Loftis. “Sneakers actually came a lot easier to me than clothing because I actually consider myself a sneaker connoisseur. I put on a pair of sneakers every day just like I put on a pair of pants. I’ve studied sneakers the same way I’ve studied anything I’ve attempted to design or manufacture.” He added, “I saw a void in lifestyle footwear. Your options are so limited with only having a hand full of brands to choose from, that there really was an opportunity”. Loftis continued, “The footwear industry is run by a limited number of companies that control the manufacturing and distribution on the DELUX-MAG.COM JANUARY 2012 | 31
global bases. It’s really easy to start a t-shirt company. It only takes $50-75 to burn a screen. But to start a sneaker company, there are seven figures involved. So there’s a lot to gain and a lot to lose”. It was the exclusivity of owning a sneaker brand that made the idea even more enticing. “It was like, be 1 of 700,000+ clothing brands that start this year, or be one of 15 footwear lines that start this year”. After considering the risk and rewards, all the signs suggested to Loftis that the payout from this gamble was worth putting it all on the line. He had already seen the successful start of other labels. All that was missing was a partner who could help his ideas come together. “Everything added up and at the same time I met Brandon Chang, an actor from Hong Kong who now lives in Taiwan. We started communicating and ended up partnering on Greedy Genius. He was equally as enthusiastic and thought this was a great opportunity to start with him being in Asia and him being a sneaker-head too.” Loftis added, “He’s responsible for all of our distribution/expansion into Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China”. Together, Loftis and Chang have built Greedy Genius from a concept to an international icon in exclusive footwear within its five-year existence. Loftis tells a story of hard work and hustle fused with global grinding and the gift-of-gab. He knows he has mastered the art of brilliantly building a brand. Once again, Loftis finds himself pleased with his progress, but he’s not ready to live off his legacy. “I don’t know if I’m there yet. To me, success is something that happens when you look back at and look at the whole picture. I’ve won some games. I’ve won some championships, but I don’t think my jersey is ready to go in the rafters yet”. Check out the latest inventory at: http://www.greedygenius.com
“...I ACTUALLY CONSIDER MYSELF A SNEAKER CONNOISSEUR...”
HEALTHY IN MIND BODY & SOUL January is a time for New Year’s resolutions, and chances are you, or someone you know, is resolving to get out of debt, quit smoking, get organized or lose weight. These are all admirable resolutions, but the one you cannot afford to overlook is to become healthy in body and mind. While we focus on looking better and feeling better, we often forget the health benefits that go along with it. While research is not yet conclusive, certain lifestyle choices, such as physical activity and diet, may help support brain health and prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in America, and is the only disease among the top ten causes of death in the U.S. with no way to prevent it, cure it or slow its progression. This is of even greater concern for AfricanAmericans, who are two to three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than other populations. Compared to the general public, African-Americans have a higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other cardiovascular complications, which could lead to a higher risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. “It’s important that people take the steps now to manage their cardiovascular risks,” encourages Jocelyn Damper, Outreach Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association St. Louis Chapter. “This may help strengthen their brain health and possibly reduce the risk of dementia.” Many of these lifestyle changes (provided below) have been shown to lower the risk of other diseases, like heart disease and diabetes, which have been linked to Alzheimer’s. With few drawbacks and plenty of known benefits, healthy lifestyle choices can improve your health and possibly protect your brain. “What’s good for your heart is good for your brain,” stated Damper. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age. Alzheimer’s mostly affects people over age 65, but adults of any age can develop Alzheimer’s. As a matter of fact, African-Americans aged 55-65 are four times more likely than other populations to have cognitive impairment. The Alzheimer’s Association is leading the fight against this
epidemic by advancing research and providing 24/7 care and support. The Alzheimer’s Association is available to help anytime, day or night, through their 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), web site (www.alz.org/stl), care consultations, support groups, respite care assistance, safety programs and legal and financial education. Also, the Alzheimer’s Association would like everyone to make their 2012 New Year’s resolution to become healthy in body and mind.
Five Steps to Help You Get & Stay Fit Step 1: Get Active If it’s good for your heart, then it’s good for your brain. Since African-Americans have a higher rate of vascular (stroke-related) disease — which may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment — it’s important to engage in physical activity to reduce your risk. Step 2: Watch Your Numbers Prevention or control of high blood pressure helps maintain a healthy brain and promotes overall health (desirable blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg). Adopt a fitness routine, eat healthy foods, don’t smoke and work to maintain a healthy weight. Step 3: Manage Your Levels A healthy brain and heart depend on maintaining normal cholesterol levels (desirable cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL). Engage in regular physical activity and eat a diet low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Step 4: Prevent or Control Diabetes Take steps to reduce your risk for diabetes by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active. Prevention or control of diabetes promotes a healthy brain (desirable fasting blood sugar is less than 100 mg/dL). Step 5: Overall Wellness African-Americans are at greater risk than white Americans for high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Because brain and heart health are so closely linked, it’s important to take good care of both. In addition, stay socially and mentally active.

Think of all the special moments that could be taken from you.
New problems with communication, changes in mood and confusion with time or place are some warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Recognizing the symptoms is the first step toward doing something about it.

HIV: THE TRUE FACTS Story: Planned Parenthood of St. Louis
When we go into communities and classrooms to teach about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, typically HIV is the most known. However, what most people have heard is usually wrong, so here are the facts. Let’s break it down. The “H” stands for Human. That means this virus can only be transmitted between humans, you cannot get it from an animal or bug. The “I” stands for Immunodeficiency. That means the virus attacks your immune system which is what keeps us healthy and fights off infections. HIV weakens and can eventually destroy the immune system making it really easy for someone to get sick. This happens in the late stage of HIV and is called AIDS. People will sometimes use these two terms as the same but they are not. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS; HIV is what is passed from person to person. You cannot get AIDS without having HIV. The “V” stands for Virus. That means that once someone tests positive for HIV, they will have the virus for the rest of their life. There is no cure. That does not mean there is no treatment. Many individuals with HIV are able to lead healthy, long lives. So how are people getting this virus? HIV can live in blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. Someone exposed to any of these fluids of someone who is HIV positive is putting themselves at risk. Ways of exposure include vaginal, oral, and anal sex, as well as sharing needles and equipment for drug use or for tattoos and piercing, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, child birth, or breast feeding. HIV cannot just appear. A person has to have it to spread it to someone else. However, it can take 10 years for someone to show any signs that they even have the virus. About 1 out of 5 people living with HIV in the US do not know they have it. It is impossible to tell by looking at someone what their status is. Because so many are infected without knowing, its encouraged by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) that adults as well as adolescents get tested, and people at increased risk of getting HIV get tested every year. Women should also get tested any time they become pregnant. So if you have never been tested especially if you feel like any of those risk behaviors match you or a partner take action and get tested! Tests are available at Planned Parenthood, so for more information or to schedule an appointment, visit www.plannedparenthood.org/stlouis or you can call 1-800-230-PLAN (7526). 38 | DELUX Magazine JANUARY 2012
ten cool ways to save
DELUXCONSCIOUSNESS
STORY BY: Philip Blanks
With Christmas bills coming right around the corner and the US Government playing our livelihood, saving money should be at the top of EVERYONE’S list. What I’ve come up with is a list of 10 different ways to cut back and still keep it #DELUX. 1. GET THE SUNDAY PAPER! The paper is only $2, but it clearly pays for itself x50 with all the coupons inside. Granted you might not be able to do any Extreme Couponing, but you will be able to save some coins…literally! 2. GET THERE EARLY! Most clubs and lounges won’t start charging a cover until 10 or 11, and most places allow ladies in for free. Why wait until 11 and pay $10 when you can get there at 10:30 and pay $FREE.99? Didn’t make sense to me either…(smh). 3. JOIN THE LIST! Anytime a place offers you to sign up for their emails, DO IT! For example, Express sends coupons (usually for $25 off $75 or $50 off $150) just for being on their mailing lists. Hell, emails don’t cost a damn thing, so why not? 4. CLEARANCE! A misconception about clearance is that the stuff is old or irregular – WRONG. Stuff goes on clearance so they can get rid of it a lot easier in order to make room for the new stuff. Right now you can buy ALL your summer stuff for next year for the low (depending on how much you gain in this winter… because we ALL do it…smh). 5. HAPPY HOUR! $2 drinks and $4 appetizers never hurt anyone right? Most restaurants have happy hour at the standard 3-6 or 4-7 (call or visit their website to see if and when they offer it). Rosalita’s Cantina offers happy hour specials almost every night of the week, including $4 Patron margaritas. Awesome right? 6. FREE STUFF! STL offers a bunch of free stuff to take advantage. Practically everything in Forest Park is free – even the history museum offers free exhibit Tuesdays, which is not advertised…so SHHHHHH. Also, check with the Gramophone and Lola and see when they have free concerts because THEY DO have free concerts. 7. REDBOX! Now we all should love us some Redbox – $1 for a new release? Hell yeah! And they also have a text message service where they send out free promo codes to rent movies for free just for signing up. With this crazy ass daylight savings time, you should definitely make it a FREE movie night! 8. RESALE! $4 for a pair of jeans? $3 for a shirt? HELL YEAH! Styles rotate year in and year out, so why not head to your local thrift store and max out for $25! Resale shops like Avalon Exchange (in the Delmar Loop) and Plato’s Closet will offer higher end brands, like BCBG & True Religion, for almost 80% the original retail value. AND they’ll offer you cash for your designer stuff! 9. $2 TUESDAYS! Partying on a weekday has never been more rewarding. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays offer awesome specials well into the night. Whether you’re downtown, in the CWE, in the Loop, or wherever, you’ll definitely find a place to chalk it up for the low-low. 10. FACEBOOK! “Like” your favorite places on Facebook and get ALL the scoop on drink and food specials AND get status updates for their weekly specialties. Some places even reward you for “Checking-In” – 1 free drink, please and thank you! PARTYING LIKE A ROCKSTAR NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD – AND ECONOMICAL!
W
e recently chopped it up with Corey Shapiro Founder of Vintage Frames Company, you may not recognize the name but we’re sure you’ve seen his frames on celebrities like Sean “P Diddy” Combs, Rick Ross, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Amber Rose, LaLa & Carmello Anthony, Rhianna, Jay-Z, & The Roots just to name a few. Vintage Frames Company is based out of Montreal, QC way up north in Canada but they conduct business worldwide. Vintage Frames specializes in vintage glasses & sunglasses. “Anything early 90’s, 80’s, 70’s, or 60’s” Shapiro says “If you’re looking for the new and trendy Vintage Frames isn’t for you”. Shapiro started Vintage Frames 5 years ago to provide a unique selection of vintage frames to the true sunglasses enthusiast that respects as well as know the art and style of a beautiful frame. “The fact that all of the staff knows the worth of the business & they all strive for success.” Shapiro also contributes his success to the uniqueness of his business and a specific demographic of exclusive clientele. When asked how you distinguish a perfect pair or selection of shades for his clientele he said “Attitude, the attitude of the client. Learning about them and who they are makes it easy to select the frame to mach their style.” Which from what we have seen he has that down pact. You may not know it but you have seen his frames in ALL of the Rick Ross videos. Those of you that love Ms. Amber Rose’s shades, yeah she got them hand delivered to her by Corey personally. Vintage Frames Company specializes in the crème de la crème of vintage sunglasses with exclusive clientele worldwide. Rare shades such as Carrera, Christian Dior, Cazal which is his favorite brand, along with many other brands. With the company being responsible for so many of the sexiest styling’s to the stars we asked him who have he yet to work with or provide frames for “Rev Run & DMC, I’m a true fan. I mean if you look around my office everything that I have is and was inspired by them.” After peeping out his YouTube channel we can definitely see the pioneers of hip-hop as an influence to him. Also while checking out a video upload “200 Visions: Setting The Record Straight for Montreal” we noticed his passion for his craft when he called out a gentleman who claimed to be a better distributor of vintage glasses when asked what was the deal he laughed and said “We’re a very humble company, but after a while it becomes too much and every once in a while you have to say something. The guy, who’s father ran an optical company here in Montreal, runs spot up here he claimed to have 2 pairs of Casals in his shop. Which is obviously not the case, by his reaction and I could tell he was reading the info on the frames off of my website.” He then continues to explain “If someone were to call and they are looking for something new he WOULD have been in the top 3 spots I WOULD have sent them to”. Being in such a unique business that provides vintage shades to the frames enthusiast, Shapiro knows the worth of true vintage. Follow Corey on Twitter: @VintageFrames

HIGHLIGHT
EX’TREME INSTITUTE by: NELLY
The St. Louis rapper turned entrepreneur, Nelly has been given a lot of criticism ever since the release of his TipDrill video several years back, and the positive things he’s trying to do for his community often goes overlooked. Recently Cornell ‘Nelly’ Hayes decided to redevelop what was originally a restaurant he co-owned known as Sky Box into “Extreme Institute” Sky Box, which closed just 18 months after it opened back in 2008. Nelly’s long-time record engineer Carl Nappa, who will serve as the executive director says the school features a 1,000-square-foot studio with a “top of the line” recording console. Students who complete classes at Extreme will know their way around other studios and have the skill to get the best out of their home equipment. Pam Bell, Vaterott’s executive director says the building, located at 800 N. 3rd Street is expected to be completed sometime in October, and will feature recording studio, music engineering space and a graphics studio where students can produce album covers and other music-related artwork.
Opened in April of 2009, the Moonrise Hotel has been an Out of this World experience. Designed with the moon and the solar system in mind, the Moonrise Hotel is contemporary, urban, luxury, modern and sophisticated – and a touch of outer space. The Moonrise is truly a one-of-a-kind, unique hotel here in St. Louis. Located in the heart of the Delmar Loop, the Moonrise Hotel is near many STL landmarks, including Blueberry Hill, The Pin-Up Bowl, and the Pageant – and is also the backyard to some of the STL’s best food joints, including Pi Pizza, Fitz, and Cicero’s. The Moonrise features 125 rooms and suites, all with a lunar specific theme, meeting
spaces as well as gathering areas. The hotel features The Eclipse, a restaurant that promises a culinary journey till 2am. With dishes like Pan Seared Scallops, Fillet of Beef, and Butter Roasted Chicken Breasts, the hotel itself won’t be the only thing you’re excited about. The rooftop terrace bar at the Moonrise is one the most go-to places here in STL. Offering an awesome view of the Delmar Loop, this bar serves up some the best signature drinks and appetizers under the moon. And the best part of the Moonrise Hotel? The color-changing lobby walls and grand staircase! You can’t miss it!

nspired by all things positive and uplifting, artist C’Babi Bayoc is no starving artist. As a matter of fact, the Grambling State graduate has been truly fulfilling his life’s purpose as an artist, a father, and as a husband to his wife—who is also pursuing her passion as a baker over at Sweet Arts Bakery (2203 S. 39th Street). Young and full of ambition, Bayoc found himself over-qualified for a job Six Flags Amusement Park. He’d been painting as long as he could remember. But at that moment, drawing caricatures at the popular amusement park didn’t offer him nearly as many thrills as the rides would. “I was horrible at it. I went home every night and practiced doing it painting style as opposed to drawing people’s heads out there. I taught myself how to do it a different way and promote it, and I actually got the job”. It was that opportunity which allowed Bayoc to transition into the professional artist he was destined to become. He considers his decision to conquer the challenge of creating cartoons of cheerful customers. “Sticking in and working at Six Flags, even though I really didn’t want to—not knowing that it would lead to my work being featured on the cover of [Def Jam’s] Violator [album], or Prince buying my work. Had I quit that job, none of that would have happened”. His work has been featured in campaigns for Coca-Cola and Anheuser-Busch.
SHADES OF FAITH
c’babi bayoc
“I had to go at it on blind faith. I’m proof that it works”
Excited about sharing this love of art, faith, and family; Bayoc’s illustrations have since been featured in exhibits, boutiques, and in children’s books. He’s currently about to launch two series: These Trees to go along with Birds of Wisdom which will inspire people to see love, art, and knowledge in the beauty of nature and a children’s book later this year entitled, My Dental Appointment—a story that helps little ones understand their frightful first trip to the dentist. Proof that a little inspiration goes a long way; Bayoc has become one of the city’s most sought-after artists. With paintings that boast of vivid colors dancing playfully throughout each character on his canvas, Bayoc has managed to make a living off of his calling. “I had to go at it on blind faith. I’m proof that it works”. For more information, check out his site at: www.cbabibayoc.com.
