THELONIUS KRYPTONITE
words by: Tiffany Shawn
With such accolades as being one of Alive Magazine’s most influential people of 2013 and being featured in shows that the Riverfront Times lists as one of the ten best in St. Louis, Thelonius Kryptonite is something the music world needs right now. Kryptonite is a musician, songwriter, and producer from the FarFetched Collective label. Describing himself as a “new wave-modern hip hop artist [with a] genre-bending approach [that] draws from a range of styles from soul-pop and post-punk to electronica and dub fusion,” Thelonius cites influences that include J Dilla, Michael Jackson, and Jimi Hendrix along with Mark Ronson and Little Dragon. His 2013 release, The Anchor Punch EP, established his champion sound while dedicating the musical montage to the inspiring legacy of Muhammad Ali. Along with his release, he gained quick notability as a performing artist opening up for Big Boi of Outkast, Bilal, Van Hunt, Elzhi, Sidewalk Chalk, and Vintage Trouble. Outside the life of music, Thelonius is an advocate for children. He has relationships with organizations such as the Children’s Defense Fund and Urban Arts Alliance for Children Development. Thelonius builds relationships, “by being a mentor instructor for young scholars through the facilitation of literary arts workshops at the Missouri History Museum, various high schools, and after school-summer programs,” he said. His outreach and passion for helping children succeed inspired him to serve further for the cause. With ideas and help from fellow activists and educators, “Freedom Arts and Education Center” was launched. Thelonius serves as program director for the non-profit organization. At the time of our correspondence, Thelonius was preparing a highly anticipated collaborative album with producer/artist Loose Screwz entitled EKleKTRIP. The album was released in May on Far Fetched Records. The positivity and lyrics with substance along with the smooth musical production will leave you on a musical high. Catch Thelonius in action June 9th at Blank Space (2847 Cherokee) accompanied by Franco-Hill and again June 22nd at Plush (3324 Locust) with Brothers Lazaroff. http://theloniuskryptonite.com

REV. RODNEY FRANCIS: WANTS TO BUY YOUR GUN Words by: Chauncia Rodgers
T
he Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012 inspired the Reverend Rodney Francis of St. Louis to prevent more youth and young adults from succumbing to gun violence. Francis, Senior Pastor at Washington Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church was concerned with the tragedy in Newtown, but he felt a greater need to remedy the gun violence in his town. With help from his church, Francis organized a community forum and call to action entitled, “From Newtown to Our Town.” Francis says the forum’s conversation began with topics such as stricter gun laws. But instead of joining the discussion on national issues, the conversation quickly turned to the culture of violence. While gun violence is foreign to some communities, St. Louis is all too familiar with such calamity. In 2012, there were 113 gun fatalities in St. Louis and 41 of those killed were youth and young adults, ages 13-25. With that knowledge, the panelists and guests discussed what the community, kids, and parents should be doing. Francis says after considering several different solutions, the group finally questioned, “Why not have a toy gun buyback?” They decided that true preventative methods start early, before children have access to real weapons. So to help alleviate the violent culture, they opted to initiate an exchange program that would encourage children to engage in nonviolent play. “The goal is to spark meaningful conversations about the culture of violence and change the way kids engage in dramatic play by replacing violent toys and video games with nonviolent ones,” says Francis. During the Toy Gun Buyback, parents and youth will visit one of three local recreation centers to exchange their violent toys for nonviolent play items. The “buyback” is actually a trade, so participants will not receive any type of cash or monetary payment for their old toys. Yolanda West, Program Coordinator for the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, believes the initiative may help change the culture of violence prevalent in some St. Louis communities. She says the things children are exposed to in their youth can have a great impact on their future path.
HEALTHY TREATS: THE PITA PIT Not many can say they’ve ventured into the entrepreneurial realm of life and even fewer can say they’ve done it in their early 20s. Jordan Martin, a former college football player, is doing just that by making his presence known in the oh-so-popular Delmar Loop with the opening of Pita Pit. Hoping to get nighttime action (as opposed to the downtown location which fares better during the day), Jordan is excited to have this alternative to fast food style eating as part of the area’s vast selection of eateries. The buffalo chicken is sure to be a crowd favorite along with the prime rib, which has been selling well. Veggie and breakfast pitas are on the menu as well! You can even create over 100 flavors on the high tech soda machine (mix your favorite drinks to create a new flavor). Pita Pit offers “fresh thinking and healthy eating” and is served up quick for people on the go. So stop in and give it a try! http://www.pitapitusa.com/ Sunday-Thursday 10a-12a Friday-Saturday 10a-3a 6120 Delmar Street St. Louis, MO 63112 314-261-4884
West grew up “in a great community that experienced a shift in culture from professionals with positive aspirations to being overshadowed with drugs, gangs, the fast life,” There were youth in West’s community that chose not to become involved with the negative, violent culture. But some others mimicked and idolized the behaviors they were exposed to. “They began to mock [the behaviors] by pretend play of killing or fighting for territory or possessions,” says West. “Some did not make it to see 20 or 30 years of age without seeing a prison or a grave,” she says. Francis understands that children want to role play and he says encourages it because it’s essential for development. But, Francis realizes that if youth engage in violent role play, their development may be influenced negatively. West agrees. And she and Francis hope the buyback will encourage appropriate play and interaction. Says West, “The purpose of the Toy Gun Buyback Initiative is to introduce all children and their families to more wholesome activities and decrease the culture of violence.”

Born on the West side of Chicago then moved to Los Angeles at the age of 5. Kristina OwensChambers, a mother of two and a humble wife, moved her family to St. Louis Missouri in 2006 to start what is now know as L.A. Flava Shoetique. Her L.A. lifestyle and fashion has translated in to one of St. Louis’ premier boutiques.
What is your background in fashion & how did the idea to create LA FLAVA SHOETIQUE come about? Almost 10 years ago I started designing my own clothing line. At the time I was a supervisor at the Criminal Court in California. Most of my designs were very conservative blazers, slacks and blouses. After resigning from the court and relocating to St. Louis Missouri. My husband and I decided to go into business for ourselves and L.A. Flava Shoetique was created. What types of clothing do you sell and who is your target market L.A. Flava Shoetique sells trendy fashion forward clothing. Our target customer is an 18 to 40 year woman. How would you describe the look and style of LA FLAVA? L.A. Flava Shoetique strives to stay current by providing fashion trends of today. What influences or inspires you brand of clothing & shoe wear? The California Lifestyle definitely influences and inspires our clothing and shoe wear at L.A. Flava Shoetique. California is very laid back, carefree and almost anything 14

goes. So our clothing and shoes represent California’s day to night lifestyle. It is my understanding that your clothes are all custom purchases? Is it true you fly to LA monthly just to hand pick your items? Yes, it is true I fly to Los Angeles sometimes twice a month to keep up with what’s hot. All of our items are hand-picked by my team and I. By traveling to Los Angeles California I am not only able to purchase exclusive items that others outside of California wouldn’t necessarily have access to. But I am also able to develop positive relationships with manufacturers and vendors. What do you think is the strongest aspect of the LA FLAVA brand? The strongest aspect of L.A. Flava Shoetique’s brand is our customer relations. I am a firm believer in developing positive relationships with my customers. It is not all about the money with L.A. Flava Shoetique. However, again it is most important that we develop a positive report with anyone that comes in contact with my company as a whole. By giving our customers what they need and want we are able to evolve and develop a stronger brand.
What can we expect from LA FLAVA in the future? In the future you can expect L.A. Flava Shoetique to continue to provide our customers with exceptional customer service, trendy fashion forward clothing and shoe wear. While, growing our brand we will be able to develop great business relationships.

DELUX: What was your first step into being a makeup artist? Alexandra: It actually started with me doing my own makeup for my destination wedding. I recorded myself applying the makeup and uploaded it to YouTube. I got a huge response. I also started working freelance with MAC cosmetics. After working for MAC for a while, I eventually got fired from my engineering job. But that didn’t stop me. Then, to my surprise, I was fired from MAC when I got the opportunity to work with the faces of the cast of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. I believe God kept pushing me to get out of things to move on to better. DELUX: When you worked for MAC did you know you wanted to be a Makeup Artist? Alexandra: I always knew I’d be great. I’m a Leo. I looked at MAC as a stepping stone. I didn’t think it’d happen this quick[ly]. I never doubted myself. I’m a competitor at heart. I got lots of nos. [But I] continued to believe. I work hard. I don’t sleep. I sacrifice what a lot of people consider fun. I strive to be the best. DELUX: What made you decide to relocate to Atlanta? Alexandra: [Atlanta is] very prosperous. I didn’t have much planned; it was really just stepping out on faith. At the time of the move I had no job and no home. I relied on my 401K. My faith in God is what helped me. Tithing on a continual basis was also big to me. God has always [blessed] me and I am appreciative of what He does for me. He’s opened doors for me in a light I’ve never thought of. No matter how finances are, I always give ten percent of my earnings, no matter what. DELUX: You tour the country hosting makeup classes, what inspired you to do so? Alexandra: I left a six-figure job. I did not join MAC to play around. I began to learn the products. Each time I’d have a client, I’d show how to apply the product. Showing my clients how to use the products built my clientele. It showed that I actually cared. My husband advised me to teach classes after my views increased on my YouTube instructional videos. Then my fan base started to have a high demand for me to visit their cities to host a class!

DELUX: What are your future plans as a makeup artist? Alexandra: My dream is opening a school targeted for aspiring makeup artists. I would offer services as far as building the student’s resume, portfolio and product application experience. DELUX: What advice would you have for aspiring makeup artists growing in the cosmetic industry? Alexandra: Take advantage of the fact [that] you’re not wellknown. You’re not expected to be perfect at the beginning. Get your practice in and make up faces for free. It’ll give experience and practice, especially if you shadow other artists. Also, build your cosmetic kit by getting the necessary products. Remember it’s an investment. Ask real makeup artists for advice. I don’t hold on to my beauty tips. God blessed me way too much to be selfish. Always be professional and stay prepared. Don’t doubt yourself. The bigger you get, the stronger the doubt will come. You have to have the strength to handle it! THE SKINNY ON SKIN CARE
K
eeping your face clean by washing it twice a day, is extremely important in black skin care. Using NYRAJU Skin Care’s black skin care products that are formulated especially for your skin, is even more important. Our products address your skins specific texture and needs. While we might all have the same physical attributes as humans, black skin is quite unique. A pimple not treated properly can become a keloid on your face. Picking a blackhead can leave a dark spot. Learning your skin type is extremely important to the type of black skin care products you choose in caring for your beautiful black skin. To use a gel type cleanser on dry skin will dry your skin even more and to think you can’t use a hydrating moisturizer on oily skin is not always true. Oily skin can be dehydrated. The over use of black skin care products that are alcohol based has caused this condition.
EXFOLIATE You know how you might have that tendency to look gray and ashy, well that could be because you’ve not exfoliated your skin. What exactly will exfoliating your skin do for you? One of the main things is to remove dead skin cells from the surface layer of your skin. A great black skin care product would be NYRAJU Skin Care’s jojoba scrub. Jojoba beads, in a base of shea butter make an excellent exfoliator for skin care black skin. The jojoba beads are gentle to your skin and not harsh like almond or some salts would be. By using them to gently exfoliate your skin, not only will you rid your skin of its dull grayness but you will see a more even toned and radiant appearance to your skin. Toners Toners, restore the acid/alkali balance of the skin, because they are pH balanced. Toners also assist in removing the remaining dirt that might have been missed in your cleansing process. Moisturizers When you think of skin care black skin, moisturizers are one of the most important products to use on your skin. Moisturizers remove that dull, ashy appearance on your skin that African American women have a tendency to get. Moisturizers combine both water and oil depending on your skin type and its use. Who says water and oil don’t mix? In the case of moisturizers for your skin, they can make a great combination. Moisturizers give a smooth finish to make-up. Putting on a light moisturizer will make your make-up much easier to apply and reduce the risk of dragging your skin. Black skin care products bring out the enhanced beauty of your skin, while rejuvenating your skin’s texture and making your skin look younger. As a company that specializes in Black Skin Care, NYRAJU Skin Care provides you with the how-to’s of having great looking skin. Skin care black skin hasn’t always been top of the mind when it comes to beauty companies and African American Women. We’ve had to use products that weren’t formulated for our skin and this has often caused more damage to our already sensitive skin.
TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF By: Karen Banks, M.Ed., Therapist & Owner of Trinity Wellness, LLC.
Congratulations Delux readers! You’ve made it to the middle of 2013! Are you still on track with those New Year’s resolutions or have you moved on to other goals? Are you still balancing career, school, community obligations, and family like a circus acrobat? Feeling a little overwhelmed with the thought that summertime is upon us? In this inaugural wellness article written exclusively for Delux, I would like to offer you three simple tips for keeping your mind, body, and spirit in balance. 1. We have all heard the flight attendant say to place your own oxygen mask over your face before you assist any children or other people in need. Our parental instincts scoff at the attendant. But truthfully, how can we take care of someone else when our own bodies are desperate for air? We are all so busy these days, but it is important to remember to take a moment for ourselves every day to just breathe! Deep breaths fill our lungs and blood with clean, fresh oxygen and they help to force the bad stuff out. Try taking 10 seconds for a full breath. Repeat this three times, then take a moment of silence to listen to your body. What is it telling you? 2. We all know that 30 minutes a day of brisk activity is great for our physical bodies. Did you know that it only takes 20 minutes of moderate activity to release endorphins to help improve our mental health and mood? When you are feeling blue, take a quick stroll around the block. Spend the time in positive reflection and notice the beauty around you. 3. While it is important to de-stress and exercise, it is equally vital eat properly. If we constantly put junk in our bodies, we will get junk in return. For physical and mental wellness, fill your body up with water, herbal teas, unlimited amounts of colorful veggies, and lean protein every day. Make that glass of red wine or nibble of dark chocolate an occasional special treat to give your mood an extra boost! Keeping your mind, body, and spirit well does not have to be a struggle. It only takes a few minutes each day to stay healthy. Find time every day for yourself. You deserve it! I am honored to be a new addition to the Delux Magazine family. This article will feature wellness tips, relationship advice, and answers to what may be troubling you. Feel free to email me at info@trinitywellnessstl.com with your questions and dilemmas and I will answer them here. TRIMMING MAKES YOUR HAIR GROW
What goes on at the ends of your hair has nothing to do with what goes on at the scalp. All hair grows ¼ to ½ an inch per month, and this can only be affected by changes in hormones and overall health. Although trimming your ends doesn’t change the rate that your hair grows, it can help you retain your hair length. Trimming keeps split ends under control, which helps to prevent breakage.
NATURAL HAIR IS NOT PROFESSIONAL
Natural hair in corporate America has been a controversial topic within black culture. Many people feel that natural hair can keep them from climbing the ladder of success, and that natural hair is a poor representation of a company. Straight hair doesn’t necessarily equal professional. Showing up at work with matted, i-just-rolled-out-of-bed hair isn’t appropriate for any professional place of business. Hair that is styled neatly should be acceptable in the workplace, regardless of texture. In any profession, it is important to put your best foot forward, and this includes your outer appearance. Natural styles, including buns, twists, braided up dos, twist-outs, afros, and locs, all have a place in the workplace.
BLACK HAIR SHOULDN’T BE SHAMPOOED/CLEANSED OFTEN
Hair, regardless of texture, should be cleansed often to maintain a healthy head of hair and scalp. Build-up, which can consist of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells, can clog healthy hair follicles. Going too long between washes would be depriving your tresses of one of the most essential ingredients that hair needs to stay healthy: water. All hair craves moisture, and water is necessary to give your hair and scalp what it needs most.
NATURAL HAIR IS HARD TO MANAGE
If natural hair is treated like straight hair, you may find it difficult to manage. While maintaining natural hair may be a nightmare to some, many people will find that kinky/ curly/coily hair can be very easy to manage with the right styling tools and practices. For example, using a small-tooth comb wouldn’t be appropriate on thick, highly textured natural hair. Using a wide-tooth comb, or even your fingers would give more manageability and less frustration. Also, it may help to put your hair on a schedule according to your hair needs and lifestyle. If you lead an active life full of daily exercise and have a family that demands your constant attention, you may find that wearing your hair in a low-maintenance style, such as twists for a longer period of time, would be more manageable than trying to style your hair every day.
I
f your hair is naturally kinky, coily, curly or wavy, you’ve probably heard your share of hair myths and half-truths. It comes with the territory! Most of us know that “100-strokes-a-day” is flat wrong and split ends can’t be permanently repaired, but there are others still floating around. Do you recognize any of these common myths? Words by: Sarita Moody
NATURAL HAIR IS HEALTHIER THAN RELAXED HAIR
One of reasons many women transition from relaxed hair to natural is to have healthier hair. And while it is quite possible for hair to be healthier in a natural state, this isn’t always true. Let’s face it. Going natural is not necessarily going to be the answer to all of your hair struggles. You can encounter just as much hair drama with a natural mane. Breakage, split ends, and dry hair, can still occur. Proper styling practices are very important for achieving healthy hair. Excessive heat and coloring on relaxed hair can cause just as much damage to natural hair. And natural hair that hides under wigs and weaves may not be in the best state if it isn’t getting enough moisture and care. DELUX MAGAZINE

MARNICE SEGUR
Words by: Winnie Caldwell
When the going gets tough, life gets tougher. Fitness professional Marnice Sigur didn’t let life get her down. Marnice had gotten in the habit of being a hardworking woman, wife, and mother so much that her health was the least of her concerns. Resilience is a good trait to have but Marnice learned that to be resilient, she also needed to be happy. With so much on her plate, Marnice became tired of being tired. Within the same time frame, Marnice lost her son to leukemia and her mother was diagnosed with diabetes and cancer among other maladies. Instead of getting overwhelmed, Marnice turned tragedy into triumph. DELUX: What made you change your health and lifestyle?
Marnice: “Learning of my mother’s diagnoses motivated me to take a stand with my own health. I had a wake up call when I went to visit my doctor. He predicted my future health to be that of my mother’s. I gained weight after losing my son and learning of my mother’s illnesses. And I also put on pounds from my newborn baby. So I decided to join a nearby gym. Taking baby steps, I went from doing only five minutes on an elliptical to running a 5k race. After becoming comfortable in the gym and losing weight, I decided to get a trainer. My personal trainer educated me even more than what I had learned independently. I learned the proper methods of strength training and in the process lost a total of 110 pounds. My desire to become healthy soon grew into a passion for helping others. The position of being a fitness professional fell in my lap a year after beginning my journey to wellness. DELUX: What advice do you have for those wanting to change their health and wellness? Marnice: After earning my Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion and Rehabilitation, I gained the areas of expertise in Nutrition, Correction Exercise, and Lifestyle Coaching. With progression you can achieve whatever.Video workouts are good for people who are at the specified fitness level. With the Insanity workouts, just make sure you’re on that level. Consistency is the key to any exercise program if you want success. If you have a busy life, make time around your life to workout. Workout at home, with the kids, wherever. There is no magic bullet to losing weight if you want long lasting success.Take an approach that can bring long term success. Build success for yourself by setting small, achievable goals. Your small goals will then turn into bigger goals. 28

DELUX: While helping people change their life, I’m sure that can be emotional. Do you find yourself in the role of a mental therapist rather than a physical therapist? Marnice: Being a fitness professional and helping clients reach their goals, I have found myself giving mental support also. People overeat for different reasons and you have to tap into that. Some emotionally overeat and for some it’s a learned behavior. Once you figure out the source of the problem, it can be fixed through education and behavior modification. Teaching people about healthier options and filling an emotional void with healthy activity can make all the difference long term. I motivate my clients and soon their internal motivation kicks in because they feel better and want better for themselves. Set boundaries for yourself. Treat yourself like you matter. I told myself, “I am going to take care of myself so I can take care of others.” DELUX: What challenges did you face that you thought you could not overcome? Marnice:With goals, there are obstacles. There are road blocks to get over. Injuries come with exercising, at times. If you become injured, it is encouraged to continue to move your body in a safe movement approved by a physician. I injured myself after running a 5k. I was out for six weeks. Most people stop all together when they are injured. I kept moving. After healing I came back even stronger because I learned the importance of rest. Exercise is the architect and rest is the builder. One major aspect that that may get any exerciser
down and want to quit is plateaus when one is losing weight. That moment when the weight is falling off but then it stops can be stressful if the goal isn’t reached. I changed my workout regimen up every time my weight loss stalled. Logging workout info is important because it gives you a track record. That way you can see progression. I went from not being able to do more than five minutes on the elliptical, to attending a spin class, then running six different 5k races. My weight dropped and my fitness level increased tremendously. DELUX: How do you manage your eating habits and not fall into temptation of unhealthy foods? Marnice: Exercising is important and effective but what you eat plays a major part as well. It all begins and ends in the kitchen. Pre-planning and preparation are key when living a busy life. I encourage learning about The Eat-Clean Diet by Tosca Reno. It’s not really a diet, but more of a lifestyle that allows for progression. The Eat-Clean diet helped me. It tells what we as people are meant to eat, such as all natural foods. I now practice this diet with my clients. I actually don’t think of it as a diet, I think of it more as a lifestyle. Find yummier options that are healthier for you. I’m not so hard on myself. That’s helped a lot. It’s mostly mental. You just have to make the decision to say, “I Will.” For more Fitness and Lifestyle coaching tips, Like Marnice Sigur’s Facebook Page: Destined for Greatness Lifestyle and Fitness Coaching

Daron Moore believes in setting a goal and making a plan to reach that goal. As a certified fitness professional and owner of Pinnacle Fitness, he helps people successfully transform their lives. Daron says that people need motivation because that is the first step in making a lifestyle change. So, he encourages people by saying, “no more excuses.” In his journey as a fitness professional, he realized that there were a lot of people—at various stages of fitness—that couldn’t afford a personal trainer. He also realized that large group classes didn’t necessarily help each person reach their personal goals. Daron says he had an “aha moment” at that point. “I decided to take a leap of faith and give free classes on Sundays. I called it ‘The Sunday B.L.A.S.T.’ which stands for Butt, Legs, Arms and Stomach Training,” says Daron. “It targeted the problem areas most people want to change,” he says.

When people are accepted in the BodSquad STL, they are assigned a health coach. Each health coach personalizes the clients’ fitness experience and helps with nutrition and lifestyle choices. The health coach also helps clients track their progress. Daron says he helps his clients by emphasizing the importance of getting off the scale and focusing on the fit of their clothes and overall health. Daron and his team at Pinnacle Fitness offer yoga, Pilates, and private training. They also offer Hyper Class which is a circuit style training session with three trainers. The friendly and personable staff gives each client the attention they need. Pinnacle Fitness wants to support their clients and help them stay motivated about their own fitness success. Daron reiterates, “No more excuses.”
Soon after Daron started giving free Sunday classes, BodSquad STL was born. BodSquad STL offers personal training within a group setting. DELUX MAGAZINE

When Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser fame uses your services as his exclusive caterer for his private event in St. Louis, you know you are doing something right. When Natasha Kwan decided to step out and follow her dream of creating an intimate foodie spot a year ago, she had no idea that it would take off like it did. Of course since she shops for Frida’s like she does her own home and focuses on clean eating, the foodie community has embraced her. Natasha lets her customers know “we control what we make by making everything in-house. It’s a bit more time consuming but the food tastes better and is better for you”. Other patrons include Brian Poser, writer for Seinfeld and Just Shoot Me, Claire McCaskill, Murphy Lee, Robin Carnahan and a host of athletes. Natasha had been in the service industry for 20 years and was blessed to have a strong career in Chicago as a marketing specialist. There were so many people suffering from food allergies, pre-diabetes and digestive issues she noticed that once they changed their eating habits, they became well and it inspired her. With a

strong support system and the belief that well prepared food can heal, she set out to open Frida’s. Whimsically, she found the name by way of Frida, her very cool cat named after Frida Kahlo, the Mexican revolutionary painter, feminist and wife of Diego Rivera. The name manifests the very good energy of the restaurant which features local art. What makes Frida’s unique in the foodie community is that it is completely vegetarian. Natasha puts good food first. It just happens to be vegetarian as well. The wonderful mix of patrons include people that just enjoy a good meal, folk seeking to change their eating habits, yoga masters, health enthusiasts, runners, neighbors, friends and families all of which creates a wonderful vibe. Good food that is good for you. Doesn’t get better than that. FRIDA’S VEGETARIAN DELI 622 N and South Rd, St Louis, MO 63130 (314) 727-6500 eat@fridasdeli.com www.fridasdeli.com

s one of the newest cast members of BET’s “The Game”, Jay “Blue” Ellis proves that his charm matches his on-screen character. From love, life, relationships, and much more, Jay Ellis fills Delux in on what everyone wants to know about him. DELUX: What inspired you to become an actor? Jay: I always wanted to be an actor. Growing up as an only child, you spend a lot of time alone. My imagination is what kept me going. Watching different movies and TV shows, my imagination definitely influenced me on wanting to know what’d the scenario would be like if I were in that situation and how I’d handle it. It always touched me. It was something that I always wanted to do. Sidney Portier, Will Smith, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Bill Cosby were just a few actors that inspired me to enter this industry. DELUX: How did you feel when you saw yourself for the first time on the premiere episode of The Game? Jay: It was surreal. And it still is. I didn’t even recognize myself. It’s an amazing feeling. I just think about how blessed I’ve been. DELUX: Pick needing to prove himself amongst the other players of his team and Jay Ellis needing to prove himself as one of the newest cast members amongst those who’ve been on The Game for years now? Jay: I think that I’ve definitely experienced some of the things that Blue’s experienced for sure. There’s definitely that thing of not wanting to come in and be the weakest link. This is a group of people who have been together for years now. They are a strong group, they’re friends. I definitely made sure that I would come in and hold my own. I wanted to make sure I’d create a character that people could relate to and wanted to see more of for sure. DELUX: With your name buzzing in the entertainment industry, it is known that you’ve modeled. What inspired you to start modeling? Jay: I was finishing up college and a friend of mine referred me to a company to be an extra in a commercial. I went to this event to talk to some people about the opportunity of modeling, and one of the models told me about how they just came back from Europe and made thirty

grand in a month and everything they needed was already taken care of. It was also the closest thing I knew to get into the entertainment industry. It was an amazing opportunity that allowed me to travel all over and experience some great things. DELUX: Are you involved with any charities? Jay: I work with a couple different charities. I am really big on education. Whenever those type of opportunities arise, I jump on it for sure. DELUX: Do you have any hidden talents? Jay: I’ve been learning to play the piano! DELUX: Do you have a girlfriend? Jay: Nah. I’m single. DELUX: Do you have a secret crush? Jay: It’s all about the connection. There’s a lot of beautiful women in this industry. Until I feel that connection I don’t want to say I have a crush. I mean Halle is beautiful, Taraji is beautiful, the list goes on, but those women are spoken for so until I have that connection, I’m cool. I’m just going to let life happen. some way. Its kind of like that reach one teach one effect. I really love a woman that sees the greater good. Oh! And if she can cook! Chicken & Dumplings and Greens are my favorite farreal. DELUX: What do you think makes a successful relationship? Jay: Communication. I think we all want to know we are being heard and understood, even if we agree or disagree. If you let things get quiet and fester it doesn’t lead to anything good. DELUX: What song do you sing in the shower? Jay: I mean I can kill some John Legend. We’re just ordinary people! DELUX: What is your favorite female body part? Jay: The neck. It’s a very sensual soft part of the body. That’s a very personal space. The curvature of it is very sexy to me. DELUX: What do you think about being this new sex symbol of black actors? Jay: I don’t think about it. I just get up and do me. I am very lucky and blessed that people think of me that way. I just think about doing good work, entertaining people and trying to touch people.
Jay: Strong women, confident, comfortable, smart, conscious of what is going on in this world. I love a woman that realizes every choice she makes in this world effects someone in DELUX MAGAZINE

When it comes to her craft, the sky is the limit for Seviin Li. The new music artist has found a path in the music business, and is enjoying the journey along the way. “Introducing yourself to new people, getting to know new people and learning and growing is so exciting as a new artist,” says Seviin. “Just the constant experience of being introduced to something new.”
S
eviin, who studied music in St. Louis, has been singing since she was a young girl. It was in the children’s church choir that she sang her first solo at 5 years old. From that point, Seviin and her two older sisters, together known as The Lee Sisters, would sing at many places for different occasions. “Music has always been a part of my life—that and acting,” Seviin says. Her many musical influences include a wide variety of artists in genres from gospel to soul such as Yolanda Adams, Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston. Currently, Seviin is starting up her music career and is making a name for herself in the industry as an R&B and Pop artist. She just released a video for her single “New Year” on May 24, featuring rapper and St. Louis native, Murphy Lee, and it’s all about starting fresh even after you make mistakes in life. “Things didn’t go the way you wanted to, so start over. Tell yourself it’s ok, it happened, you have a chance to start a new year. It doesn’t have to start in January. Whatever that moment is, start over,” Seviin says. “I want people to understand that you can start over, start a new year and go kick it, have fun, live life.”
others. In everything that Seviin does with her music, she wants to make a difference in someone’s life. “I love to inspire people to reach for their purpose,” Seviin says. “I’m always just trying to find ways to encourage people no matter what your goals are or your career field. I like to inspire people to just go for it.” As for the future, Seviin has much more in store for her career. Touring in the summer, a Christmas album and branching off into acting are a few of the endeavors she has planned. She now has two songs on iTunes, “Good Together” and “New Year.” With the performances that she gives as a part of the Vatterot College tour, Seviin hopes to build up her fan base and get her name out there more. She likes to think of her new fans and her loyal fans as being much more important to her than just that. “I don’t have fans, I have family because I feel that they support you just like a family would.”
The song ideas that Seviin comes up with and writes the lyrics for are based a lot from her own experiences in life. They are her own stories and ideas of love, hurt and having an impact on DELUX MAGAZINE

DELUX THOUGHT
MY WOMAN BODY REVELATION
F
or a long time, I didn’t FEEL like a woman, not that I felt “trans” or male, I just never felt woman enough. In a world where I appear to be so many things on an obvious level, most people would immediately point out that I “look” like a woman. And too a degree, yes, I would have agreed. But the truth was that I just didn’t feel woman enough physically. Being “petit” (as I have come to comfortably consider myself) has been quite a journey for me. Feeling too small or too thin, too skinny, maybe even frail, has always been an up and down battle. I began to develop a sort of anxiety. I was always worried about how thin I looked. I began to excessively layer under my jeans and wear over-size sweaters not only as a fashion statement but as a disguise. As a performance artist I know about role-playing. I know that everyday we go up in drag for the sheer purpose of the performance. I live in the realm of performativity. But I also know I was hiding, hiding my sense of inadequacy. In my community — namely, that of black women — I have felt silently alienated many times. Not having a voluptuous shape had been such a burden for me. I longed to gain weight yet I couldn’t conceive of a proper way to do so. I drowned myself in the bottom of protein shakes and ate a bunch of crap that I knew was horrible for my body just to gain weight. I was ridiculous and it really didn’t work very much. Or so I thought… Soon, I started to notice a change in my body. I 54

gained a little here and there. And then a little more. And before I knew it I was 25 lbs heavier and I felt “normal.” I had a booty and thighs. I was completely feeling myself. I knew I had my “woman-body.” “Woman-body” was a phrase that I used to describe a body that was curvy, full and “womanly” by a very stringent and oppressive scale in the black community.
completely. I prefer a different sort of attention, and in that time I learned that attention from men was at the very bottom of my list of interest. And while I firmly believe that regardless of how I dress men should never make me feel uncomfortable about my body, I still CHOOSE to avoid certain uncomfortable situations because of how I am dressed — it ain’t fair but it’s the truth.
Being petit is not always glorified, especially not in my family. I recall a time when I did a photo shoot for a friend and I LOVED the images. I’d just begun wrapping my hair and connecting with my inner and higher self. I felt more beautiful on the inside than I had ever felt. My grandmother saw the images and called my mom crying out of fear and desperation. Even after my weight gain she was saddened by how thin I looked. She thought I looked sick. That saddened me to my core. I felt so disconnected and damaged. I’d always felt I looked different than a lot of the women in my family being that I was always so thin, but in that moment I felt completely isolated from the tall, curvy, powerful, strong women I admired so much.
Over time, I returned to a sense of balance in my diet. I stopped eating meat several years earlier and now I was regulating my starch intake and eating more greens. I also went to Cambodia where a brief yet traumatic stint with food poising caused me to loose all the 20 lbs or so that I had gained. I was back down and, honestly, feeling down. Yet this time I had a partner and actual support, encouragement and a reflection, someone to remind me that I manifest and radiate an inner beauty that shines brighter than my imperfections. I was reminded that my imperfections were my perfections. I began to heal (again). Healing has a funny way of creeping up and waking you in the morning, whispering sweet nothings in your ear that mean the world to you. I’m gracious for my healing process as well as my ups and downs. I’m humbled by my dreams and my reflections. I appreciate all the love people offer me and the courage I inspire in them. But most of all I am honored by space and time. In the end, the journey is so glorious and full of truth. It’s a breath of fresh air.
I had let certain aspects of my ego go and began embracing my new found woman-body. I began to dress less conservatively than I had. I wore short shorts and cropped tops. All the things that I had been WAY to shy to wear were now completely at my reach, hanging in the closet and waiting to be flaunted. Honestly that time was VERY short lived — it just wasn’t me, not

WHATS COOKING
:
QUINOA
THE SUPER GRAIN
Quinoa: ”a grain-like crop grown primarily for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, or grain, as it is not a member of the true grass family. As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beets, spinach and tumbleweeds.” (-wikipedia) Belonging to a class all of its own this imposter of a grain has the highest protein content of all whole grains, providing all 9 essential amino acids, this “pseudocereal /grain” is a actually a complete protein. Vegan or gluten intolerant… gluten and cholesterol free, quinoa is not only high in protein but fiber and iron as well, quinoa is a great substitute for those who choose to eliminate any sources of animal based products such as meat and dairy from their diet. Now we all know quinoa can be substituted in a plethora of traditional and non-traditional dinner recipes but have you ever thought about desserts? Well if the answer is no, below are some of my favorite dessert recipes from the Queen of Quinoa, who shows us a new way to think about this super power “grain”.
PEANUT BUTTER OAT & QUINOA COOKIES Ingredients
1/2 cup oat bran (gluten-free optional) 1/4 cup rolled oats (gluten-free optional) 1/4 cup quinoa flakes 1/4 cup coconut sugar 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter 1 large egg 1/4 cup applesauce 2 tablespoons maple syrup Stevia to taste Instructions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients and mix until incorporated. In a separate mixing bowl, beat all the wet ingredients until combined and smooth. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Taste and add stevia until you get to your desired level of desired sweetness. Scoop the dough onto the cookie sheets (I use an ice cream scoop to do this). Flatten with the back of a wet fork and bake in the center of the oven for 13 - 15 minutes, until the cookies have started to brown and are a little crispy to the touch. Cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and cool for another 5 or 10 minutes. Notes gluten-free | dairy-free | refined sugar-Free
Dark Chocolate Quinoa Pudding
1 cup quinoa 3 cups almond milk ¼ cup pure maple syrup 3–4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional) Garnish ideas: toasted coconut, chopped nuts, sprinkle of cayenne pepper, fresh fruit, pomegranate seeds, chocolate chips, etc. Add quinoa, milk and maple syrup to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and stir in cocoa powder. Cover with a lid ¾ of the way, stirring frequently for about 30 minutes, until the water has almost entirely been absorbed. Remove from the heat, stir in the chia seeds (if using) and serve. Garnish with your desired topping and enjoy. Chocolate pudding was never really my thing. I wasn’t one of those kids that had parents who would fill my lunch box with Snack Packs, or that even had anything worth trading for something like that. No, my health-conscious parents sent sandwiches served on “seed bread” (multi-grain for my little kid brain). But we’re not talking about those sugar-laden, artificially flavored, chemical infused chocolate containers of custard for this post. No, we’re talking about all-natural, healthy, vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free chocolate pudding. A protein-filled, nutrient-dense dessert that is rich, decadent and elegant enough to serve during the holidays. To me, there’s almost nothing better than enjoying a beautiful bite of a sweet chocolate treat. When I removed dairy and refined sugar from my diet, chocolate fell by the wayside. I used to have a small chocolate square every single night with my cup of mint tea, but it seemed like every single chocolate bar that I looked at had sugar in it. So to curb my chocolate cravings, I’ve had to get creative. Over the past few years, I’ve come up with easy, delicious, sugar-free (and gluten-free) ways to enjoy chocolate. And this is one of the best ones yet. This is a newer (and much improved) version of rice pudding. Subtract the rice, the cream and the sugar; substitute quinoa, almond milk and maple syrup – with the added nutrients of cocoa powder and chia seeds – and you’ve got one super healthy chocolate treat on your hands. So please enjoy some guilt-free Chocolate Quinoa Pudding with me. DELUX MAGAZINE

CABO SAN LUCUS
Majestic in aura, Capella Pedregal astounds the eye with its breathtaking location and luminous design. Come, experience perfection in one of Mexico’s preeminent destinations.
Situated on a secluded parcel of land on the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, the hotel has been a destination for celebrities and VIPs alike. Its unique location offers peaceful solitude due to the limited access through a 300-meter long private tunnel, Dos Mares. The more lively Cabo San Lucas is only a short five-minute walk for those who feel the need to venture out of seclusion. The history of this majestic site stems from the same need for escape that visitors to the Capella Pedregal often feel. In the early 1970s, Manual Diaz Rivera left Mexico City to discover this untouched land near the small fishing village of Cabo. After purchasing the land in 1974, architect and family patriarch Don Manuel developed the 360acre site into one of Mexico’s preeminent neighborhoods, Pedregal de Cabo. Thirty years later, Don Manual’s oldest grandson took the lead to develop the last
untouched site that would become Capella Pedregal in 2009. Capella’s design features the charming Spanish architecture that is emblematic of Mexico’s romance. Contrasted with the pueblo architecture are modern embellishments that give a sleek feel to the setting. Central to the resort is a grand pool that saunters through the main deck area mimicking a lazy stream. The pool is built up from the sand, so loungers have an uninhibited view of the stunning coastline. Capella’s unique location at the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez offers visitors frequent opportunities to see humpback whales off the coast. The hotel is built around its picturesque ocean setting with guestrooms and hotel amenities facing the water. There’s hardly a place on the resort without a magnificent view.

ome weekends consist of quiet nights by the fireplace or chilling in front of the television. Others can be full of tasks, as if the work-week has no end. And then you have a typical weekend for Shadzilla and DJ Reminise. The duo puts on productions that are all about taking the nightlife action back to the happy feelings of roller skating rinks and family reunions. “We’re in our mid-thirties and have a retro feel to us,” said Shadzilla.
If you find yourself in a party situation with these fellas, you’re sure to get a show. Instead of performing on stage, they just might be in the mix, jammin’ on the one with you and the crowd. “You will be talking about it when you leave,” said Shadzilla. “It’s like a ‘feeling thing’ that is kind of hard to explain,” he said. Shadzilla and DJ Reminise go back several years. And because they share similar tastes in music, art, and fashion--among other things, the collaboration came natural for the two. They are their own street team, marketing and graphic design company, and publicists. A lot of work goes into every production. Their goal is to take it back to the day when parties were real parties. Their events are somewhat of a hip-hop and fashion renaissance and celebration of good vibes and energy. The guys came up with their name, The Vaporz, so they wouldn’t throw people off. As long as you’re into hearing good music, you’re welcome to come. “Those in their thirties to forties are a creative generation. That embodies The Vaporz. We really know how to kick it and have fun,” said Shadzilla. DJ Reminise added, “[Our goal is to] connect the culture with our age range. You don’t see or hear the fun anymore. We want to get back to having fun, [having a] connection with the men and women just to have fun, no stress. You forget about the bills and problems.” Shadzilla chimed in, “People need that environment.” So when you attend a production by this duo, be prepared to sweat out weaves and snapbacks. Said Shadzilla with a smile, “We’re here to encourage that energy and bring people together.” See listings of upcoming events, artwork, pictures, and music at www.thevaporz.com.

JACQUE LAND KEEPING IT ONE HUNDRED Jacque Land, Executive Board Director of 100 Black Men, Co-Owner of Platinum Group Inc., and also President of St. Louis Public Library Board, Land has been very beneficial to our community. Land has been involved with 100 Black Men for over 15 years. Inspired by prominent and influential leaders that heavily gave back to the community, Land became motivated to be a prominent leader himself. On his motivation to start Platinum Group, Inc.... “Seeing leaders motivated me. A motto from 100 Black Men is ‘What they see is what they’ll be.’ I saw black men that looked like me. They opened up so I could grow as a leader and a man. That’s when I decided to start my event planning firm 15 years ago. Business was booming. 100 Black Men was that catalyst. I then decided to lend my time and give back to the community.” On how 100 Black Men helps youth... “We help enhance our young men. We even work with at-risk youth who may not have a strong foundation. We provide conflict resolution. We help them get on the right path. And, more of the community involvement would be great. Collaboration is key. As one, you can only be good. But when there is a unity and a team, you are destined to be great, because everyone has a different skill. And when all is brought together, it’s unstoppable.” On how the community can help... “I ask that our community as a whole please give up their time to support any way they can. Show that you genuinely care. Get to know our youth. Participate as a mentor. Allow youth to know your challenges. [Tell them] that success didn’t come overnight. Position youth for employment opportunities. Let them shadow you. I believe job shadowing is huge to inspire our youth. People think they don’t have time. There is always a way to work it in to cultivate that relationship. Also, to my brothers, give our young men suits to dress better. You look better, you’ll feel better and do better. 62

On a mother’s role... I even believe mothers play an advisory role. Single mothers experience the need for more men to grow. Young men could definitely benefit from the testimonies of single mothers. My wife, Leata Price-Land, was a single mother when I met her. A mother of two boys. Something powerful she shared with me is that she saw transition and change in her sons after I came along. What was even more powerful for me was the moment when my step sons addressed me later as adults and said that my involvement helped them to grow as men. Watching how I treat their mother [showed] them how to grow into [men] and how to grow in a relationship. That is what gave me confirmation. So I think mothers and anyone in the communities can be a supportive advocate.” On a former mentee “One mentee I knew had a good foundation. Although he was one that became challenged by peer pressure. You know. He wanted to fit in and be cool. With the strength of my role and relationship, I was able to redirect him with internship opportunities. I even exposed him to social activities. Unfortunately he still couldn’t let go of certain peers who had a negative aspect in life. He soon learned about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was in a bad situation and was guilty by association. He had to face consequences. He soon put what he learned by being mentored in effect to get back on track positively.” On successful business with his wife, Leata Price-Land... “Being able to be engaged in the community has leveraged the opportunity for our business to be successful. We have been fortunate to be able to provide to corporate clients as well. Also we have been able to offer our service to support nonprofit organizations. We provide services at a tremendous discounted rate to help achieve the mission.” For more info on 100 Black Men check out: www.100blackmenstl.com For more event planning info check out: Platinum Group on Facebook
