Allow him to reintroduce himself… Hakeem, formally known as Hakeem “The Dream”, has evolved. “I dropped the dream part to my name because I’m living more of a reality now – I’m living out my dreams. It’s a part of evolving and growing.” You know him for his 2008 club banger, “Thick Wit It” produced by Ronnie Notch, but he’s on to the next one. “Thick Wit It was refreshing at the time – good party record that came at a good time. Some people still think I’m just that one record.” But the record was hot though… “Yeah, the record was getting spun 6-8 months even before it was in rotation. I wasn’t ready for how successful it was, but I just let the people speak on it. And plus it make girls feel good about themselves [laughs]. It just affected people in the positive way.” Hakeem’s newest project, Made In America, which drops this month, features production by Tar Boy, Basement Beats, and K.E. On The Tracks. “It’s a really well rounded project. I’m ready to rep the Lou in a respectable manner. This music is the next level – it’s not a regional or local sound.” And it ain’t no “Thick Wit It”.. “If you still stuck on Thick Wit It, then that’s yo fault [laughs]. If you not following up with what I’m doing, then 22 | DELUX Magazine
I don’t how you gonna receive [Made In America]. I suggest you not even put it in.” And that’s real talk! “I gotta evolve as an artist. Having a good radio record is cool but having a firm fanbase is better. I appreciate [“Thick Wit It”] for what it was and what it has done for me but STL is such a media driven town, that the general population base you on what you’re doing media wise and nothing else.” That’s why his hustle is so hard.. “I’m looking to reshape the music scene. I want to be respected as a MC and make good songs. I want to be a role model for my crib – you can think outside the blocks and aspire for more.” Yea, he did say blocks. AMY SOMERVILLE CENTRO MODEL POISED TO RE-MODEL NEW FACES FOR THE LOU & PUTTING TOGETHER HER #WINNINGTEAM D What have you been doing since you joined Centro? I have assembled a team of eleven scouts and am hard at work developing our new young talent. I have been creating new relationships with the clients as well. D Why did you decide to join Centro? I like new oppertunites and I feel like I have been leading up to this my whole career. I wanted to be able to pass on all the knowledge I have gained as a working model to aspiring new models. D What’s it like to work for Sharon Tucci who, as Paul fisher described, a legend in the modeling industry? Working with Sharon has been an amazing
expierence. She truely cares about what she does and is always thinking outside of the box, which has been so inspiring. It has been an honor to have the opportunity to work with someone I admire so much.
D How are the three models who we met on the show doing? They are doing awesome! They are busy practicing their runway walk, working on their portfolios, and maintaining good grades in school. Two of them are actually leaving for New York next week. They are excited about their future carrers in the modeling industry. D Have you secured any new talent since the show? Yes we have. We have received a ton of online submissions and our scouts have found some unique fresh faces as well. You will be hearing more about them in the near future. D What can we expect from Centro in the next few years? Centro will be recognized as its own brand and sill be known world wide for developing and placing new models.
D Modeling isn’t all glamourous, what does it take to become a model? Besides the just fitting the industry standards, a model needs to be driven and dedicated. A model should have the entire package. A pretty face isnt enough. A huge part of modeling is personality. Having a great personality and letting it shine is infinitely important. Centro models are expected to be good role models as well. D How important is it to be a role model? Being a good role model is extremely important. Being someone that is looked up to is a huge responsibility and one that shouldnt be taken lightly. Role models set the standard for future models. D What are your personal goals for yourself and Centro? My personal goal is to put St. Louis back on the map in the fashion industry and to work with my team to put Centro back on top. We want to reinvent the fashion industry and promote healthy lifestyles for the models. D Anything else we need to know about you and Centro? Our team is strong and ready for anything. We are just begining our journey and are excited for what lies ahead. DELUX-MAG.COM | 23

MYA LOVEISTHEANSWER 2012 is going to be hot year for Mya. Not that she hasn't had a hot year every year since she started her career in the entertainment industry 12 year ago. Every year has been burning, scorching, sweating, pulsating all the way to the top as she added title after title to her resume. On her official website, her bio defines this long list as internationally known, respected singer, songwriter, producer, dancer/ choreographer, actreSs, designer, model, activist and philanthropist. Mya’s been in several movies including the Oscar-winning Chicago, which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award, and
her music has been featured in Moulin Rouge(for which she won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration) and the
Disney film Atlantis:The Lost Empire. She has been in numerous films and television shows and was the runner up to the winner on Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars. Mya has released six albums and currently has released the dance single Love is the Answer which she mixed with legendary DJ Cedric Gervais, who is a superstar in his own right. She has been nominated and won Grammy’s, MTV awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, the list goes on and on…and so will she. In addition to her incredible entertainment career, she also is a devoted philanthropist. At 31, this amazing woman who started out years ago as a tap dancer, has tapped her way into our hearts and continues to show us why Love is the Answer!
D What inspired your new Dance sound? I’ve always had a variety of sounds & tempos on my albums, but I’d have to say alongside just being a girl who likes to have fun, I’d say all of the dance remixes to the singles in my career that I loved to perform have inspired some of my upcoming up tempos. D “Love is the Answer” has a great message and great sound! What does this track mean to you? The track sonically feels elevating. Great production by Cedric Gervais and positive, meaningful writing by Dee Roberts. Universal love and celebration is the message. D How does it feel to have “Love is the Answer” be the theme song for the NOH8 campaign?
Washington DC. Other than it being your home town and a great place to introduce Dance music, is there a political idea behind choosing this as the location for the video?
8. Who are three of your greatest musical inspirations?
8112 Studios who are based in DC shot the video. A few years ago I’d call it coincidental, but now I realize it’s just all by design, because it’s time.
9. Cedric Gervais is a great DJ and has produced some great Dance tracks! How was working with him and how did you two connect for this project?
5. Are we also going to get some R&B/ Hip Hop/Soul from you in your new CD?
It was pretty darn awesome working with Cedric in Miami. Great production, cool studio setting, great mix engineer, great writers & he has the cutest dog ever.
Like always, I’ll be serving a variety of experiences and sounds on my upcoming albums. 6. You’ve worked with great names in the R&B/Hip Hop/Soul industry. In the Dance industry, are there any artists you would like to collaborate? Yes, but that’s a secret, for now.
“Love Is the Answer” definitely embodies so many messages of philanthropic, global causes & concern, but still feels light enough to party and celebrate to. Positive energy and vibes from start to finish. D The music video was taped in
7. Does a new music style equal a new fashion style for you? The vibe & lyrical content of a song play a huge part in the fashion inspiration, before the genre.
Minnie Ripperton, Prince & my father. There are many more.
10. Being that Cedric is a Miami resident, did you get to spend a lot of time in the sexy city and what are your feelings about Miami? I spent a nice amount of time in Miami and I personally wouldn’t mind living there. I find it to be motivating with a reward at the end of my day. Outdoors is beautiful & weather is amazing all year around. I’m much more inspired to eat healthier & work out there. 11. One of our favorite songs of yours is “Whatever Bitch”. What is your favorite
song you have ever recorded?
to being sexy?
Among the songs that have been released,
I’ve traveled the world & have seen “beautiful” women everywhere, so I’m not so sure about that. But “sexy” to me is what’s within… simplicity. One who is rich without all of the accessories, but possesses all of the necessities.
-My favorite ballad I’ve ever recorded would be “Nothing At All” -My favorite Queen song “Whatever Bitch” -Favorite love making jam… “For the First Time” 12. What is the sexiest city in the world? Hotel? Club? Give me 2 more years to answer that question. The party has just begun. 13. What are five things we would always find in your purse? Cash/Credit, Mirror, Phone, Lipgloss, Topstick 14. What is a movie that has inspired you? Album? Book? Movie: Sweet Charity Album: Natural Wonder by Stevie Wonder Books: Chelsea Handler “Are You There Vodka..It’s Me, Chelsea” 15. You are considered one of the sexiest an most beautiful women in the world. How do you define “sexy” and what is the secret
16. In 2009 you were on “Dancing with the Stars”. What did you learn from that experience?
My favorite film was actually “Chicago”-an entertainer’s dream, the opportunity to act, sing and dance in one project alongside an incredible cast and superb director…simply breathtaking. 19. In your extensive bio on your website, you are listed as a huge philanthropist, including working for breast cancer and LGBT youth. Of all of the charities and foundations you have worked, which experience has been the most memorable and which would you like to be most remembered?
I learned that it takes 2 to Tango..hahaha! 17. Many of your songs have been in the soundtracks of films. What is it like to hear your song in a movie and which project was the most exciting for you? To hear my songs in a film is actually much more comfortable than having to watch myself on screen as an actress. Most exciting was Atlantis “Where the Dream Takes You” as it was an animated Disney film and the song plopped during the closing credits. 18. You have been in several films, including “Chicago” for which you won a Screen Actor’s Guild Award. What was your favorite film you were in and why?
Every experience has been memorable & molding, but I find the causes that I dedicate personal interaction and a large bulk of time, I am most connected to. Every summer I dedicate 3 months of my time to The Mya Arts and Tech Foundation Program, becoming deeply involved with inner city youth as executive director and a teacher. It is here where I’ve been fortunate to witness first hand, progress, enthusiasm & even testimony. 20. Boxers, briefs, jockstraps…or nothing at all? It truly depends on what we are talking about here. What’s the setting? And what’s the action? That’s my answer.
Special thanks to LOLA Simms and Mya for taking the time for this interview.

dont ever touch a black woman's hair Whether it's yours or not, your hair needs to be SEXY!
And with the help of Tendai Morris, creator of Boogie Baby Hair Extensions and certified Weavologist, DELUX is bringing you the official extension guide for sexy hair. Even though there are several techniques you can use to apply your extensions (or weave), the most popular ones are: QUICK WEAVE – This technique is the most versatile and the quickest to do. You can go from short to long, or even long to short. It’s also the least expensive. In the process, your natural hair is molded down with gel or done on a stocking cap. Using bonding glue, the extensions are glued on to the hair or cap. This can last up to two weeks, but if your hair is not protected correctly, you can pull out a lot hair when taking it down. FUSIONS – More popular among Caucasians, this technique is more expensive due to the process involved. The extensions are done strand-by-strand, using keratin based glue already on the tip of the extension. You have versatility in your placement, but the more volume you require, the more extensions
you’ll need. This process can last up to 5 weeks, but the tips can harden and cause scalp pain, or even worse, your hair can break off when the extension is removed. SEW IN – The most popular technique to date, sew ins are the BEST and the healthiest way to do your hair extensions. This allows your hair to be put away and cared for underneath the application. They’re very versatile in applying different textures and different looks – from straight to short to afro to curly. Your hair is sectioned and braided to the scalp, in which the extensions are threaded onto the braid. They can also be done on a net – hair is braided to the scalp and a net is attached on top of the braids for extra protection. This technique can be worn up to 3 to 4 months. When shopping for hair, depending on the use, always remember to look for human hair. Human hair is going to provide the most versatility and allow for heat styling and longer use. Synthetic blends are not designed for long wear and heat applied will cause the extension to melt. Of course the higher grades of hair are going to cost more, but you get what you pay for! There are literally a million types of extensions and hair blends to choose from, but the more popular ones are these: VIRGIN HAIR/REMY – These are your Indian, Chinese, and Mongolian bred hairs. Virgin
hair is the highest quality hair extensions you can get, which is why it’s the most expensive ($300 to $400). This hair is healthy – no chemicals, treatments, or colors, and this hair will last you for about 3 years if properly cared for. REMY – This hair is similar to the Virgin, but this type of hair has been treated and colored. This hair is usually versatile for any hair type, from Caucasian to Ethnic textured hair. This hair is less expensive than the Virgin, and it can last for a while if properly cared for. YAKY – This hair a lot fuller and thicker, and is designed to blend well with coarse hair (or Ethnic hair). This hair is not reusable, and will usually last about 3 months. SILKY STRAIGHT – This is the hair for those balling on a budget. This type of hair is very useful for a quick weave or a sew in, as you can buy this hair in a weft or single strand. You’ll want to only wear this for about 3 months because it is treated with silicone, so it will start to wear after a while. As with always, you’ll want to speak with a professional before attempting to apply any of these processes yourself – unfriendly weaves will be called out and talked about in 2012. You’re welcome. story: philip blanks DELUX-MAG.COM | 35

What makes the best Black hair vitamins stand out from the rest? There are a few different things to look for that can lead you to picking which one will actually deliver the promised results. So here is a list of tips on picking the best Black hair vitamins for women. Reviews This one is probably a no brainer, but the best black hair vitamins will likely have lots of positive user feedback not only on their own site, but on third-party sites like Amazon, eBay, BizRate, etc. Certainly lots of positive reviews on the brands own site would be the biggest sign of a good product to grow faster hair, longer hair or what have you. Ingredients No matter if the vitamins are for hair loss or making your hair color last longer they will have some primary key ingredients included. The first is a blend of amino acids (proteins). Proteins are the building blocks of hair, and thus are key ingredients in any hair supplements. Also biotin would be present in the best vitamins for Black hair, as it is needed to grow healthy hair faster. Promised Results Consider what kind of results your are being promised. Hair on average will grow about 1/2 inch per month, and the best Black hair vitamins can possibly double that after about 90 days of consistent use. Sometimes people will see results sooner, but really growing longer hair faster does take a little bit of time.
health & beauty
Shampoo Why bring up shampoo if we are talking about vitamins? First to dispel the rumor that you can get away with only shampooing every once in a while. The reality is that healthy hair gets shampooed much more often. And in fact, the best Black hair vitamins brands will typically make a shampoo that is the ideal companion for their product. Any brand not doing this is simply doing a disservice to their customers.

The ladies aren’t the only ones that need to worry about good grooming habits. It’s time for us guys to put a little extra effort into our appearance too. Staying DELUX is easy if you follow these tips… Brush your teeth! No, seriously. Use Sensodyne ProNamel Gentle Whitening toothpaste. It cleans, protects, and whitens– and plus dentists recommend it. Also, get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. It’s only $1, and one rinse with this kills all your bad breath! Nobody likes a yuckmouth. Its 2012 guys! Manicures [PAUSE] aren’t just for the ladies. Busted hands are socially unacceptable, period. Nails and cuticles clipped with a nice buff at $12 tops. A man with clean hands is one that cares about his appearance. And plus, your girl will appreciate your soft hands too [wink].
Whatever look you’re rocking, make sure you stay lined up. A fresh lining can take you from looking like the fool, to looking like the cool…dude that is. And for your facial hair – figure out the look you want and clean it up. You can rock the “Rick Ross” and still keep it fresh. Smelling good cannot be stressed enough! It doesn’t just stop at the shower – enhance your clean with fresh scents, like Bleu de Chanel by Chanel or Gucci Guilty by Gucci. If you’re trying to make ish pop off, spray on Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L’Homme right after you get out the shower. You’re welcome. Thuggish, ruggish bones need to moisture too. Moisturizing helps keep the skin healthy and renewed – and you’ll stop cutting people with your knees and elbows. CONSCIOUSNESS
America has Sexually Transmitted Infections There is a lot of information out there for sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), also known as STD’s. You think with all this info safer sex would be practiced everywhere... But the truth is, it isn’t. Only 17% of adults reported using a condom when having sex. The upside of safer sex is that it protects you from infections, as well as unwanted pregnancy, and in a world where one in every five people in America have some form of an STI, why would you not want to protect yourself? That means 65 million people in America carry an STI and can pass it to others. But what is more alarming is the number of people who are unaware of their own infections. For example, nearly 45 38 | DELUX Magazine
million Americans have genital herpes, and of that population, 80% are unaware they have it.
If you have an STI, it is important to realize you are not alone. Nearly 50% of people will get some form of an STI during their lifetime. But it is also important to not pass the infection on to others. If you are unsure how to talk about it with your partner, here are some tips. Before talking, make sure you have all the facts, and talk with a health care provider about your STI. Ask about treatment options, and whether your partner may need treatment. Also ask what you need to do so that you do not pass on the STI. Safer sex is your right and you should be treated it as such. But still, it can be nervewracking or awkward to try and bring it up in the bedroom, or to even just talk about. You may not know when to bring up the topic, but it is best to talk about it before you have sex. However, it is never too late
to bring it up. Many people are happy to find out just how supportive their partner can be and how having this conversation can bring them closer. If your partner decides to end the relationship, you can feel good that you were honest with them. baratunde thurston a technology-loving comedian from the future who cares enough about the world to engage with it politically. Yes, he votes. Regularly. With an ancestry that includes a great-grandfather who taught himself to read, a grandmother who was the first black employee at the U.S. Supreme Court building and a mother who took over radio stations in the name of the black liberation struggle, Baratunde has long been taught to question authority. It helps that he was raised in Washington, D.C. under crackhead Mayor Marion Barry. His creative and inquisitive mind, forged by his mother’s lessons and polished by a philosophy degree from Harvard, have found expression in the pages of Vanity Fair and the The UK Independent, on the radio waves of WNYC, where he is a regular contributor and on the screens of news networks such as CNN, MSNBC, BBC, Al Jazeera English and This Week In Tech. He even hosted his own
CONSCIOUSNESS
show on Discovery Science called Popular Science’s Future Of. Far from simply appearing in media, Baratunde is also helping defining its future. In 2006 he co-founded Jack & Jill Politics, a black political blog whose coverage of the 2008 Democratic National Convention has been archived by the Library Of Congress. For the past four years, he has helped bring one of America’s finest journalistic institutions into the future, serving as Director of Digital for The Onion. In 2011 he was a judge for the Knight News Challenge, a media innovation contest which funds experiments in the future of news. His book, How To Be Black, will be published by Harper Collins in February 2012. His most significant expression, however, is probably his own creative experimentation with new digital platforms. He was named Foursquare Mayor of the Year for holding a real-world rally to defend his virtual mayorship. Every year he live hate-tweets the Twilight movies to his 100,000+ Twitter followers, and in 2009, he embodied the swine flu with a Twitter account of that name. His wide range of experience and activity has earned him an equally wide range of praise. The ACLU of Michigan honored him “for changing the political and social landscape one laugh at a time.” He was nominated for the Bill Hicks Award for Thought Provoking
Comedy. The Root added him to its list of 100 most influential African Americans. Fast Company listed him as one of the 100 Most Creative People In Business. Then-candidate Barack Obama called him “someone I need to know,” and YouTube user “mooospot” referred to him as a “dumbass liberal crackhead welfare sucker.” When he’s not staring at a glowing rectangle, Mr. Thurston, which he goes by near the end of his bio, travels the world, speaking and advising on the subjects of our digital future and storytelling, satire and democracy, and race and politics. In the past two years alone he has spoken at South by Southwest, Google Atmosphere, the Online News Association Conference, Netroots Nation, the Mashable Awards, Web 2.0 Expo, Personal Democracy Forum, Internet Week NY, Social Media Week, TribeCon, the ACLU Annual Dinner (Mass., Mich. and Okla.), Surf Summit 14 (Mexico), The AtlanTech Dinner (Paris), The FD Summit (Amsterdam) and Digital Directions (Australia). In May 2011, he spoke at the presidential palace in Tbilisi, Georgia (the country) on the role of satire in a healthy democracy. Baratunde performs standup comedy regularly in New York City, resides in Brooklyn, lives on Twitter and has over 30 years experience being black.

get the look Men’s fashion trends are greatly different to women’s. They exist, yes. But their cycle moves much slower. Nowhere is that truer then of men’s suit trends. While there are distinct styles of suits that feature amongst 2011’s fashion trends I should note from the get-go that they’re not unique to the year – in fact, many of the key looks you’ll find in this guide will still be in-fashion come 2012 and beyond. Which is a great
thing – it means you can afford to spend more on a suit thus buying a quality piece of workmanship that you’ll still be able to wear for many a year to come. The same can’t be said of most fashion trends. While suiting and formal-wear trends for men aren’t seasonal (unless, of course, you’re talking about the weight of the cloth) and play out over several years, 2011 and 2012 continue the dominance of two
qualities that any modern suit you invest in should aspire to have: Classicism & Masculinity But what styles, cuts and cloths should you be looking for? READ MORE AT WWW.DELUX-MAG.COM

patrizia pepe fall-winter 2012 fashion show womens collection "breakfast on the moon"
A new season dawns, where personal image is projected towards symbolic lunar space, floating somewhere between present and future... a space where anything is possible and where Patrizia Pepe woman uses her emotions to discover undreamtof interpretations and unprecedented transformations, exploring sophisticated new possible interplays between shape, material and colour. The traditional canons and classical elegance here inspire a totally contemporary, versatile and complete wardrobe, where passionate sartorial experimentation endows every garment with new meaning and projects an aesthetic attitude finely balanced between rigour and sensuality, masculinity and femininity, simplicity and glamour.
This is a tale of lightly delicate nuances, where natural tones like cristobal camel, astro brown and varying beiges alternate with powdery shades and mélange hues, or with deeper notes of yves blue and astro ruby, or with more vibrant energies like space red, couture pink and spark yellow. Silhouettes are minimal and absolute. Tight volumes and fluid lines have been carefully studied to accommodate the movements of modern living. Couture-like tailoring and construction breed precise shapes... for example the high-waisted tulip-shaped skirts. The same goes for outerwear, which can either be rigorous and precise or looser and more relaxed. The new trouser suits combine tight bustier-like jackets with soft loose-fitting trousers, or alternatively pashmina tops with perfectly fitting skintight pants. The choice of fabrics, and the philosophy of mixing exquisite luxury materials, create ultra-modern effects in a mood that oscillates continually between traditional wisdom and futuristic avant-garde. In particular, conventional surfaces are renewed by the use of refined and unusual
combinations, often involving appliques and techno materials like neoprene. Knitwear takes on a spikier consistency with the addition of latex, while chiffon is broken up by iridescent streaks and lurex lace. Printed patterns fake a jacquard effect that evokes antique tapestry and is further enhanced by the “new vintage luxury” approach that transforms tops, dresses and tracksuits into shining outfits glimmering with lace, shading effects, lurex decorative motifs, explosions of strass and strings of sequins. The daring play between differing materials lies behind the success of the collection’s must-haves: lace fizzes on anoraks, drainpipe trousers or T-shirts, and even on light wool or classic silk satins. Jackets are enlivened by fringes and lurex inserts, while sequin decorations conjure up shimmering animalier forms worthy of a red carpet appearance. Classic herringbone patterns are enlivened by shading effects. Bold contrasts bring together and unite very different colours and materials. Soft leather abounds: ultra-light and ultra-soft, laminated, embossed, broken up by slashed folds or given weight by rock-style buckles. story: marco ruffa DELUX-MAG.COM | 41

When the line wraps around the building, you know it’s gotta be good! And that’s exactly what Bogart’s is – GOOD! The only BBQ restaurant in STL to slow cook with apple and cherry wood for 24 hours straight, Bogart’s is seriously a big deal! A sister (or brother) to Pappy’s Smokehouse in Midtown, Bogart’s offers some of the same goodness except with more flavor and more love. They’re ribs are glazed with an apricot marinade and torched to perfection, while the pulled pork is smoky and flavorful with or without the sauce. Even the baked beans, which are baked in the same pit as the beef brisket and feature shreds of pulled pork in the sauce, are the bomb.com. But keep in mind, Bogart’s closes at 4p and they only seat about 40. I know right? But it’s worth the hassle. 1627 S 9th St 63104 | 314 621 3107

Seemingly every day, a new collection of awe-inspiring images surfaces with one common denominator tying them all together: the magical touch of Blanks. Aside from his individual projects, his photography has landed him work on Keyshia Cole’s “The Way It Is” Reality Series, College Hill 5, Bravo’s Housewives of Atlanta, and several MTV Sweet Sixteen episodes. To say he is “amazing” would be an understatement. So in this second installment of Atlanta’s Who’s Who, get to know Derek Blanks: The man behind the lens. what exactly where your career aspirations? DB: My career aspirations were to be an illustrator, doing everything from children’s books to magazine covers. You began your career as a painter and freelance designer. How did you transition into “celebrity” photography? DB: Basically, I used my photography as reference materials for my paintings. While doing that, I noticed that with photography came instant gratification. Also, my background in illustration added to my photography, which was something different from that of the normal photographer. Who was the first celebrity you had the opportunity to shoot? DB: Ludacris for his Tantra energy drink In my opinion, you raised the bar with your pictorial project Alter Egos Revealed. How did you come up with the concept? DB: Before I started working with celebrities I was going to do this concept with models. At the point that I started production, my
celebrity clientele had grown and I knew that many of these clients would be the perfect muses for the project. You shot a number of celebrities for the pictorial. Exactly how long did that project take to complete? DB: The project is actually still in production. My goal is to have it completed by the end of this year. Did you have a favorite image out of the set? DB: My favorite image would have to be of Bree (ANTM) because of its simplicity and classic form of art. Is there a celebrity that you would love to work with that you haven’t already? DB: I would love to work with Mary J Blige. She’s a classic beauty, and Angelina Jolie. What is the most challenging aspect of your job? DB: Staying fresh and consistent with my work.

The pressing issues that come up throughout the play revolve around classroom management, sex, race, violence, language, self-esteem, and community, along with many others. It’s amazing that one woman could provide this much insight into the power that is the classroom. Anyone who wants to make a positive difference should see this play with an open mind on shaping the future.

Lyric jones DELUX recently caught up with Ms lyric jones. she
“Music is her breath of fresh air,” close friends say about Lyric Jones. The Jones musical repertoire includes rapping, playing drums and bass, singing writing, producing and even DJ-ing. She dips into jazz, neosoul and mainly hip-hop, but whatever she’s doing, she brings a presence like no other.
Indeed she “makes’em have a Jones for Lyric,” passionate, multi-faceted and strives to be indispensable. “Why not do it all? Why can’t I be an emcee, soul singer and jazz drummer? Music is music, I love Hip Hop, Jazz & Soul, so the world is goinna see it, know it and hear it.” The new college graduate is fresh out the books and ready to give the industry a face lift. Her highly anticipated debut album title “Jones St.” is expected to drop February 7th with features and appearances including Grammy Award winning Esperanza Spaldin, J-Live, Phife Dawg, and drummer Lil John Robers amongst others.
“All I want in the exhilaration of being on a stage,” Jones said. Her hunger definitely shows. She’s hungry for the crowd to feel her music as deeply as she does, with her powerful, agressive yest message-conscious lyrics spilling out of the speakers.
Originally from Boston, Lyric began singing first. At a very young age, her first stints were in church, talent shows and community choirs. As a high school student, she was joint enrolled at Berklee College of Music. It was in Berklee where Jones molded her

Phifer can’t define what he does, but it’s sort of his job to keep us guessing.
MARQUIS PHIFER The fashion socialite keeps Atlanta young, flagrant, and flamboyant “I’ve become infatuated with furs as of late,” Marquis Phifer says without a hint of irony. “I counted the other day, I have like 15.” It’s not hard to find photos of Phifer on his five-year-old fashion blog, LateBoots.com, donning a chinchilla vest, custom-tailored denim, or a pair of Stubbs & Wootton velvet slippers while striking that elusive sideways pose his friends like to call “Phifer face.” But his sense of style — “casual luxury,” he says — is only a means to an end. Identifying that end, however, is the tricky part. It’s not that

“People ask me that all the time, what do I do. And that’s a question I’ve never answered because it’s almost like, what don’t I do,” says the Morehouse College senior and business major. “I’m able to kind of do everything that needs to be done.” Marquis Phifer is a master of mystique if nothing else — but there’s always something else when Phifer’s involved, and it usually comes with a check attached. Lifestyle marketer: Check. Fashion blogger: Check. Stylist: Check. Socialite: Check. As the Atlanta ambassador for the Heineken brand for two years running, he’s amassed his talents for signature event planning and branding to plaster a pocket of the city with his young, flagrant, and flamboyant trademark. In the process, he’s become a brand unto himself, an influencer and cultivator of cool whose lifestyle offers proof that decadence is the new black. In essence, Phifer’s “job title” is cultural translator. “Major brands don’t know how to talk to [us],” he says. “So I become the mediator between me and my friends, [who] are the consumers, and kind of bring the language down to a level where both parties
understand each other.” Most of his connections (fellow Morehouse men and fashion magnates, Coltrane Curtis and Fonzworth Bentley) and clients (Jay-Z’s Rocawear line) have come as a result of his blog, which he runs with partner Sham. Phifer considers it an online extension of himself, one where the line between personal interests and professional pursuits is seamless. His ethos — think like a rich man but work like a broke one — enables him to balance school with a monster work ethic and regular trips to New York, where he spends summers interning. He’s distilled a bit of NYC’s exclusivity into Atlanta nightlife, throwing invite-only parties at the Sound Table, New Era, and his favorite Atlanta spot, the W Hotel in Midtown, where he co-hosted a #COOL party in November. “Because my friends [are] the best-looking people in Atlanta, the most fashionable, it’s kind of like a generation of tastemakers that I’ve aligned myself with.” While he plans to continue representing Heineken in Atlanta through 2012, a move to the fashion capital New York seems likely for him. “I can’t say just yet,” says Phifer, content to keep us guessing for now. story: Rodney Carmichael

little tybee Little Tybee oozes southern charm with a dash of classicism capable of penetrating a generation of music fans beyond their own years. - ‘i guess i’m floating’
LITTLE TYBEE is building momentum, and it won’t be long until they capture the hearts of indie and alternative lovers everywhere. Their most recent album HUMOROUS TO BEES has drawn a lot of attention over the last year, with buzz building quickly over a new release on the way. Their songs are elegant and sweet, filled with vocal melodies and harmony that will make you swoon with delight. On record and live, they present a level of musicianship that sounds deceptively simple but reveals its complexity further with every listen. Employing subtle Latin rhythms and intricate jazz guitar licks, Little Tybee makes a distinctly unique sound that captures their unrestrained originality. Aside from solely making music, the band recently collaborated with artist TOM HANEY to produce one of the most beautiful and impressive music videos of 2011, BOXCAR FAIR. By combining an exquisite
puppetry performance with dreamy set designs, they succeeded in producing a whimsical experience with which they could bring their audience. They shot the entire film in one take without cuts or edits. As a result of their work and creativity, the video was chosen as an official selection at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and has received praised by numerous blogs and media features, including top picks on iTunes and YouTube. LITTLE TYBEE is a band that you will continue to see a lot of in the near future. They are about to embark on a US tour to spread their infectious sounds. Also keep an eye out for them at SXSW 2012 in Austin where they are scheduled for numerous shows, including the PAPER GARDEN RECORDS showcase.

talents and creativity. He started brain storming and came up with Love Jones Theory. He organizes, runs, and books the hottest Saint Louis acts, bringing them to the Love Jones stage. “I felt this was something needed in North County, bringing culture to mature entertainment,” Dave explained.
Love Jones Theory, which was brought to life in March 2011, is just what the doctor ordered for the Saint Louis R&B community. The name originated from the 1997 Theodore Witcher movie “Love Jones”, a classic urban romantic comedy that was centered around a bar which hosted a spoken word forum.
The show is hosted by the very funny comedian, Alex Hal, who is an integral part of the Love Jones Theory machine… the oil that keeps the show moving. He is also a Saint Louis native and comic that has been in the area for almost five years.
Love Jones Theory, like the classic movie, is a forum for local artist to show case their talents including Jazz, R&B, spoken word, and the occasional live art show.
“Al is the heart of the show, and I couldn’t do it without him,” Dave stated. “There is always space [at Love Jones] for new artists to come out and showcase and get their name into the streets.”
The show is enhanced by some of the hottest local jazz and neo soul bands – cameo performers often join the band on stage. Love Jones Theory is a well-staged and engaging event created and produced by Dave, a long-time Saint Louis native. why city of god is a better movie than scarface When Brian De Palma’s Scarface was released 25 years ago, it introduced the world to a new brand/breed of gangsta movie. Ins main character, Tony Montana (uh hell naw im not talking about Future), inspired a generation with his “balls and my world” [pause] mantra. A few years ago a new film made its way into the ring and the champion has a #1 contender: City of God(even though my man Brooklyn will disagree and scream Shottas). Released May 2005, hip-hop never has seen a film like this. It was personal; it was ghetto; it was 3 hours long, an oh yeah, it had subtitles.Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund, City of God told the story of Brazil’s notorious favela slums. Based on Paolo Lin’s book, Cidade De Deus, the film exploded onto the scene like a shot of Organo Gold Coffee in the morning. Behind word-of-mouth props that just wouldnt go away and strong critical acclaim, City
of God set the ‘hood on fire and gained Oscar nomination for Best Foriegn film and probable opening doors for movies like Slumdog Millionaire. With that said, the big cojones at Black Market want to throw’em on the table by being the first to say that City of God is the new ‘hood flick to beat, the best ‘hood movie of all time. And prove the point, we’re gonna throw it at the grand champ, Scarface. The only thing in our opinion that scarface has over City of God is the face that Scarface was actually based off true FBI files and extensive research of Oliver stone on the 1970s drug game. Now that -ish was dope. But do us a favor thank us later. Go cop, burn, download, City of God and tell us that that movie is not #1... and I’m a true BELLY fan. Lamb Meatballs
Located in the Southern Dairies’ former engine room, 4th & Swift epitomizes industrial elegance. The Swift in the name refers to chef Jay Swift, who came to prominence as the chef at South City Kitchen. Here, he maintains his focus on Southern cooking, but with a more refined and personal touch -- taste comes first, not aw-shucks gimmickry. The summer menu offered a jumble of tender braised lamb shoulder “lasagna” with wild mushrooms and ricotta cheese, and an elegant summer

pea and radish salad paired with a kickin’ tuna tartare in hot mustard oil. Despite the stampede of customers, 4th & Swift has managed to maintain an uncommon level of quality and composure. 621 North Ave., Building B Atlanta, Ga 30308 Midtown 678-904-0160 www.4thandswift.com

BY MALCOLM GLADWELL
Theres Dean her first love and then theres Keith Mr. Right Now. Kyla struggles with her desires and her past when she makes a rare trip back home to Fort Worth. After leaving ten years ago Kyla comes to terms with the one who got away; Dean and their short lived romance comes into full swing. That is until it goes terribly wrong and she is left with wondering if she should work it out with Keith instead. A simple kiss led to many secrets being revealed; and it makes Kyla wish she could take it all back. Michael is ready to commit to Brittany and for once he feels he has the right woman by his side. That is until a passionate night turns into an unwanted child. Fighting to keep her heart from being broken; Brittany vows to never be just another notch in a mans belt. Although Michael promises to be there and seals it with a kiss, Brittany still struggles with if she should carry their child. When love isnt enough will each one of them make the right decision? Can they finally trust the one they want the most? After all its better to be slapped by the truth then kissed with a lie. They say kisses dont lie, right?
Jennifer Hudson achieved fame (and an Academy Award) in Dreamgirls, but much of her life was the stuff of nightmares. The soulful Chicago-born singer, who got started singing in her South Side church choir before she wowed the judges on the third season of American Idol, has had to deal with tragedy and trauma throughout her life, and she’s felt the pain of being judged by her appearance instead of her talent.
Gladwell’s latest book, “Outliers,” is a passionate argument for taking the second version of the story more seriously than we now do. “It is not the brightest who succeed,” Gladwell writes. “Nor is success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities — and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.”
In her intimately personal and inspirational memoir, I Got This, Hudson tells all, opening up about her struggles with success, relationships, weight and body image. Along the way, she lets us in on lots of juicy stories about her experiences on Idol, Dreamgirls, making her Grammy®-winning album, dealing with backstabbing competition, and more— stories her fans have been waiting to hear!
He doesn’t actually tell his own life story in the book. (But he lurks offstage, since he does describe the arc of his mother’s Jamaican family.) Instead, he tells other success stories, often using the device of back-to-back narratives. He starts with a tale of individual greatness, about the Beatles or the titans of Silicon Valley or the enormously successful generation of New York Jews born in the early 20th century. Then he adds details that undercut that tale.
