Allow him to reintroduce himself… Hakeem, formally known as Hakeem “The Dream”, has evolved. “I dropped the dream part to my name because I’m living more of a reality now – I’m living out my dreams. It’s a part of evolving and growing.” You know him for his 2008 club banger, “Thick Wit It” produced by Ronnie Notch, but he’s on to the next one. “Thick Wit It was refreshing at the time – good party record that came at a good time. Some people still think I’m just that one record.” But the record was hot though… “Yeah, the record was getting spun 6-8 months even before it was in rotation. I wasn’t ready for how successful it was, but I just let the people speak on it. And plus it make girls feel good about themselves [laughs]. It just affected people in the positive way.” Hakeem’s newest project, Made In America, which drops this month, features production by Tar Boy, Basement Beats, and K.E. On The Tracks. “It’s a really well rounded project. I’m ready to rep the Lou in a respectable manner. This music is the next level – it’s not a regional or local sound.” And it ain’t no “Thick Wit It”.. “If you still stuck on Thick Wit It, then that’s yo fault [laughs]. 18 | DELUX Magazine

If you not following up with what I’m doing, then I don’t how you gonna receive [Made In America]. I suggest you not even put it in.” And that’s real talk! “I gotta evolve as an artist. Having a good radio record is cool but having a firm fanbase is better. I appreciate [“Thick Wit It”] for what it was and what it has done for me but STL is such a media driven town, that the general population base you on what you’re doing media wise and nothing else.” That’s why his hustle is so hard.. “I’m looking to reshape the music scene. I want to be respected as a MC and make good songs. I want to be a role model for my crib – you can think outside the blocks and aspire for more.” Yea, he did say blocks. AMY SOMmERVILLE CENTRO MODEL POISED TO RE-MODEL NEW FACES FOR THE LOU & PUTTING TOGETHER HER #WINNINGTEAM D What have you been doing since you joined Centro? I have assembled a team of eleven scouts and am hard at work developing our new young talent. I have been creating new relationships with the clients, as well. D Why did you decide to join Centro? I like new opportunities and I feel like I have been leading up to this my whole career. I wanted to be able to pass on all the knowledge I have gained as a working model to aspiring, new models. D What’s it like to work for Sharon Tucci who, as Paul fisher described, a legend in the modeling industry? Working with Sharon has been an amazing

experience. She truly cares about what she does and is always thinking outside the box, which has been so inspiring. It has been an honor to have the opportunity to work with someone I admire so much.

D How are the three models doing whom we met on the show? They are doing awesome! They are busy practicing their runway walk, working on their portfolios, and maintaining good grades in school. Two of them are actually leaving for New York next week (second week of March). They are excited about their future careers in the modeling industry. D Have you secured any new talent since the show? Yes we have. We have received a ton of online submissions and our scouts have found some unique fresh faces, as well. You will be hearing more about them in the near future.

what does it take to become a model? Besides fitting the industry standards, a model needs to be driven and dedicated. A model should have the entire package. A pretty face isn’t enough. A huge part of modeling is personality. Having a great personality and letting it shine is infinitely important. Centro models are expected to be good role models, as well. D How important is it to be a role model? Being a good role model is extremely important. Being someone that is looked up to is a huge responsibility and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Role models set the standard for future models. D What are your personal goals for yourself and Centro? My personal goal is to put St. Louis back on the map in the fashion industry and to work with my team to put Centro back on top. We want to reinvent the fashion industry and promote healthy lifestyles for the models.

D What can we expect from Centro in the next few years? Centro will be recognized as its own brand and still be known worldwide for developing and placing new models.

D Anything else we need to know about you and Centro? Our team is strong and ready for anything. We are just beginning our journey and are excited for what lies ahead.

he ultra-extra-super-patriotic Harley-Davidson and Ford F-150 tie-in works, so why not something a little more, you know, Italian? Presenting the Fiat 500 by Gucci, which debuted at the Geneva auto show and highlights Italy’s association with high-end fashion. It also serves to commemorate Gucci’s 90th anniversary. Now if the Harley pickup is a sloppy Joe with home fries, the 500 by Gucci is field greens with raspberry vinaigrette and a Parmesan crostini. Indeed, the Gucci touch does what it can to further emasculate the diminutive 500, which is hardly hairy-chested to begin with. Two color schemes are available: black with bright chrome details, and white with satin-finish chrome, both circumscribed by Gucci’s trademark green and red stripes below the window line. Lacey 16-inch wheels with color-coordinated insets feature Gucci’s interlocking-G logo on the center caps, while the B-pillar and liftgate are embellished with the word “Gucci” in a sassy cursive font.

Inside, the black leather seats with white “Guccissima” inserts are bisected by the Gucci stripe, which also appears on the seat belts, shifter, key fob, and carpets. And if that’s not enough, customers may further stuff the interior with a full line of “500 by Gucci” travel accessories, as well as a suitcase full of other goods, including track suits, driving gloves, bomber jackets, sunglasses, and, of course, a watch. Fashion/car pairings are tough to get right; Lamborghini could barely pull it off when it partnered with equally outlandish Versace in 2006 for a limited run of the Murciélago LP640 Versace, and there also was 2008’s Hermès-treated Bugatti Veyron. Then again, at a price of $23,500, the 500 by Gucci is a fraction of a fraction of the cost of the aforementioned Lambo or Veyron, and roughly what the lunching-lady set drops in a Gucci boutique in one afternoon. It will become available in Europe this summer, and the rest of the world at the end of the year. No word as to whether a copy was given to “Mouth Full of Golds” rapper Gucci Mane, but given his arrest late last year for reckless driving, his subsequent stay in a psychiatric hospital, and new ice-cream-cone facial tattoo, we doubt it.

spicebomb by Viktor&rolf

After Flowerbomb, Antidote, and Eau Méga, the Amsterdam fashion house Viktor & Rolf has launched Spicebomb, a new masculine fragrance. While the clothing by designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren is avant-garde and edgy, the fragrances feel to me driven mostly by the desire to boost the company’s profit margins. They are well-made, polished, but perhaps stay too close to current trends. Spicebomb is a pleasant surprise in the line up—a fragrance that blends gender boundaries as effortlessly as Tilda Swinton—V&R’s muse—in Orlando and that has a few dark and smoky surprises in its layers. Spices provide the delicious sparkle throughout Spicebomb, but despite the name, it is not a fiery, pungent fragrance like Serge Lutens Arabie or Parfums de Nicolaï Maharadjah. After the peppery shimmer of the top notes, Spicebomb enters the gentleman’s library with its rich sweetness of pipe tobacco, dark woods and tangy leather. The medicinal warmth of saffron plays up the musk backdrop against which the suave cherry almond notes of tobacco unfold. Although billed as a masculine fragrance, Spicebomb has none of the men’s cologne clichés. Those who mourn the discontinuation of L’Artisan Tea for Two will find a similar smoky woods and sweet spices leitmotif in Spicebomb. It also shares the vanilla musk of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and the tobacco sweetness of A*Men Pure Havane. The sweetness is moderated by woods, and the character of Spicebomb remains caressing and elegant. It can effortlessly accompany you to work, to a late night party and then it might even comfort you like a favorite cashmere scarf.

he social networking giant has reached an agreement to buy Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock. That means even before it launches its massive IPO, Facebook is using its market wealth to grow. Here’s what Mark Zuckerberg has posted on his own “Timeline” on Facebook. (A post that at 11 minutes old had over 34,000 likes on it. )I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook. For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience

for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests. We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

greenecology

A Way Of Life Reducing the Carbon Footprint Reducing the carbon footprint that we inflict on the environment is one of the major strides that we can make as individuals and collectively for society as a whole. Another major move towards a greener ecology is to rely more on recycling as a source of raw materials for the manufacture of new consumer goods. This new ecology and its practices are quite closely related to the principles of sustainable living and development.

Green ecology is a philosophy and a way of life. This is a way of life that attempts to reduce the impact that society has on the environment. This is also called sustainable living by proponents of the green philosophy. One of the major effects of our modern life is the increasing consumption of the natural resources of the Earth that are all too finite. The rate of consumption of our technological and consumeroriented society cannot be maintained indefinitely. Some resources will run out faster than others but all are irreplaceable. Solutions For Global Warming The global climate change that has continued at an increasing rate (global warming) has been linked to pollutants that have been introduced into the environment by industry, transportation, and the over-all way of life of our consumer society. Green ecology seeks to address this urgent and increasingly dangerous global situation. The advocates of green or ‘new’ ecology have recognized this trend and have attracted public attention to this state of affairs. Academics and scholars of the environmental persuasion have come up with various methods and solutions to slow the rate that we exploit and consume the valuable and irreplaceable natural resources of our beautiful planet. Since her very first play where she was draped in a reindeer hide and wired with a bright red nose, Charity has always kept her dreams in sight yet her priorities in check. She wants to continue to mature as an artist, but also as a businesswoman, as she continues to collaborate with great creative minds and pursue projects that spark the same inspiration she had when she was a little girl watching her mother. STORY: LENEIA WESTON PHOTO: XPRESSIONS 2 ART

D What was your inspiration for becoming an actress? CS My Mom. I would sit in my baby seat and watch her with her friends tap dancing for a performance. My Mom was into performing arts so I was surrounded by it as a child. I was “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer” in a preschool performance and fell in love with entertaining right then and there. As a child growing up, I participated in plays and performing arts. For fun, I would gather my siblings and I’d tack sheets to the popcorn ceiling for curtains and put on plays for my parents! It’s so funny to think back on those times, I guess I was lucky to find my passion as a toddler!! D In your breakout role in HBO’s hit series, “Entourage,” what isyour favorite memory about working on that show? CS I was cast on Entourage in one of the first episodes before anyone knew the show was going to be a huge

success. Therefore, I really didn’t know at that time just how amazing it was or what doors it would open for me later on. However, working on that show was so much fun, the whole experience was a favorite memory! Jerry Ferrara, aka turtle, invited us girls to hang out and I remember his trailer was epic!! All the boys were super sweet, funny to work with, and made my first television appearance beyond exciting. D DISH about working with the allencompassing Justin Timberlake on “Alpha Dog” CS JT is great, really down to earth. I have to laugh about when I first met him. He came up to me, introduced himself, and said (as if I didn’t know him), “Hi, I’m Justin Timberlake.” I was thinking, like, yeah, I caught that :). Kind of funny! Anyway, the four of us girls had to workout for a month before shooting. I remember one time Justin came up and gave me some tips on how to lift the weights more easily in the middle of me straining to lift my weight up. My face was

all red and felt like veins popping out and I’m thinking, great, this is so embarrassing. But it was fun and we all became great set friends after working out every other day. In a short time, he just seemed so normal, I would forget how famous he was (until we would go out in public!!). I had another embarrassing moment when they added a little kissy bed scene for Justin and I, that was not scripted. So I showed up to set expecting to be in a “high school party” scene, and then Nick Cassavettes announced we were adding this little scene and to kick off our shoes. (I’m like - what?? Huh?? Wait!! I didn’t prepare!! I need to brush my teeth, we just had lunch!!) And then during my scene, I had to be licking his chest and the painted black tattoos kept getting stuck on my teeth. So every time we ended the “sexy scene” I had black all over my teeth! I really didn’t know how to take the whole situation! But I will say, Justin is a super talented guy and I’m glad I got a chance to work with him! D How comfortable were you portraying a character that was being unfaithful to her husband? Were you concerned that her actions might alienate the viewers? CS Well, I was okay with it because it is a character, and it is relatable for some relationships. Usually the negative focus is always on men cheating, but in this case, the writer wanted to portray it from the womans/mistresses point of view. I was a little worried about my character being very disliked on the show, but actors don’t get to choose their storylines and it is something that can happen in real life. Also, characters who are flawed are much more interesting to play than those who always do the right thing and appear perfect. It is challenging to become sympathetic to the audience and have them root for your character when your characters actions are clearly wrong and you are portraying the bad girl!

CS April is now single and changing it all up!! She is a a point in time where she is changing and hopefully growing, trying to figure out what she wants, reflecting on past mistakes, and what she wants to be different as she moves forward. Season 2 for April could be called: Adventures in dating with April Goldberg! It should be a funny ride! D In your current role on “Single Ladies,” you’re living in Atlanta. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? CS Let’s see. . . Atlanta is great and just so beautiful and green, but there are no big mountains. I need that extreme snowboarding!! So, I would say, probably Colorado, because its “home sweet home” for me! I love the four seasons and the beautiful mountains! However, I really do love Cali, too. Tough choice! D And you opened a gym this year. Tell us about it. CS Well, I helped open a gym in 2008. It is the Educogym and it is doing amazingly well! I spent more time than I should have, but I learned so much and I still stop by and try to give my help and support. The owner, Thurston Pym, is a great friend and he is doing an incredible job educating the public and taking training to a whole new level. I actually spent a few months as a trainer when this amazing gym first opened and it was a such a good time and very educational! D What’s your favorite workout? CS I actually adore Tracy Anderson because I love to dance and she focuses on the smaller muscles which give a slimming effect to the larger, major muscles. This works amazingly well for my body type which tends to bulk up in the muscles almost instantly. Maybe I missed my calling as a body builder!! It’s

tough because I really have to watch that I don’t overdo my workouts! D I know health & fitness are important to you. It’s gotta be tough being healthy and busy. What are some of your favorite healthy snacks for busy people? CS That is so true! I find it really hard to be focused on staying fit and healthy and at the same time trying to work crazy hours....away from home! And in Atlanta where the food is so alluring!! Some of my favorite snacks (you might laugh, because everyone on set makes fun of me) are organic baby food. There is nothing in it that I avoid, it’s quick and tasty depending on which flavors you pick. I like the fruit choices. Also, I know the baby food is pure. Another delicious and healthy snack is tuna wrapped in seaweed nori paper. Oh, and soups as well, they are so convenient! D What are some of your favorite Atlanta restaurants when you DON’t want to be healthy? CS That’s a difficult question because I was raised to eat extremely healthy, so for me, an unhealthy meal just doesn’t really taste good and my body rarely lets me get away with any cheating! Some restaurant food is so salty and seasoned that the true taste is lost, so it’s often difficult for me to know where to eat out. I have to say my favorite restaurant in Atlanta is Farm Burger, they are health conscious and use top quality food and produce. It’s mostly organic, with 100% grass-fed beef, which I think just tastes better and is important for my particular diet. Guess I just need to get out more often and try more of the exciting restaurants one has to choose from here in Atlanta!

“I

kevin pollack the usual suspect at lumiere theater

“I’m a comedian first,” Kevin muses. “I learned to diversify and also write, direct, and act. I’m really active in all four areas of the industry. I always wanted to be a fourtal threat.” “A quadruple threat?” asks Delux “No, no… Fourtal. I like that word better.” Kevin chats with Delux about his THREE upcoming films, his first book, his award winning live podcast, and what it’s like to be “Talkin’ Walkin.” An award-winning actor, Pollak (The Usual Suspects, Casino, A Few Good Men) was also named by Comedy Central as One of the Top 100 Comedians of All Time.

Interview: Kevin Pollak. D: We’re excited about your stand-up show in St. Louis at Lumiere Place. How often do you tour? KP: I don’t get out to do much stand up. I do maybe 15 dates a year. D: Wow! Only 15 dates a year? You were named by Comedy Central as one of the Top 100 Comedians of all Time. So we’re pretty lucky to have you come through St. Louis. KP: Well thank you.

D: Where will we find you when you come to St. Louis? Are you going to get out into the city? We know you hosted the first season of “Celebrity Poker Showdown” on Bravo, so I’m guessing you’ll find some poker action? KP: St. Louis will definitely find me in the Poker Room at Lumiere Place. Poker is a thinking person’s game, much like chess. D: Are you familiar with St. Louis? Have you visited before? KP: Oh yes, I’m very familiar with St. Louis, and I’ve had many visits. Tony LaRussa and I are working on a film together. I’ve been involved as a producer on a film project of a great book called “3 Nights in August,” which was written by Pulitzer Prize winner, Buzz Bissinger, who wrote the critically acclaimed and hugely successful book, “Friday Night Lights.” Buzz wrote 3 Nights with, and about, Tony LaRussa, the manager of this year’s World Series champs, the St. Louis Cardinals. If you’re a baseball fan at all, I could not recommend this book more. If you haven’t read it, I suggest it. It’s a great read. Riveting, insightful, serious pageturner and a behind-the-scenes view, never before revealed. D: We hear you’re working on a book project of your own, is that right? KP: It’s my first book, titled, “How I Slept My Way to the Middle.” It’s full of secrets and stories about my career. Sort of my autobiography, if you will. D: What other film projects are you working on now? KP: I’m currently working on three films. In July, “Magic of Belle Island” will release. It’s a Rob Reiner film starring Morgan Freeman and Virginia Matson. It’s about a famed author who has reached the end of his rope, or lost his muse, if you will. He moves out to Belle Island, and rents a house next door to a woman and her daughter, and finds something special. The film, “Chez Upshaw” is a dark comedy with Iliana Douglas about a married couple who turn their bed and breakfast lodge into a resort for assisted suicides. And I’m also working on a family film, titled “Saving Santa,” which is a Christmas movie.

D: You’ve rocked out some incredible acting roles in epic films in the duration of your career. What are some of your favorite memories? KP: Definitely working with Mattheu & Lemmon in “Grumpy Old Men.” It doesn’t get any better than that. Of course “A Few Good Men,” and oh! Working with Denzel, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger – I’ve led a charmed acting existence. D: Is there a film you could watch over and over again? What is your personal cult classic? KP: “The In-Laws.” “Modern Romance.” “That Think You Do” with Tom Hanks – my favorites. D: Tell us about your award-winning podcast. How long has that been streaming? KP: We’ve been live for 3 years and one and a half weeks. It’s a long form one on one format. We have fun, and we’ve definitely found a lost art. I like autobiographies, and learning about people’s journey. Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show is a live streaming, video talkshow seen every Sunday, 3PM PST at www.kevinpollakschatshow.com. Here, I interview celebrated actors, writers, directors, comedians, and masters of the tech universe. D: You have a recent debut of a second podcast, correct? KP: Yes, it’s a comedy podcast, “Talkin’ Walkin.” I spend the entire podcast improvising as Walken. So it’s not just an impersonation in a short spurt, it’s like I AM Christopher Walken for the entire show. D: Are you enjoying the medium of an online show and audience? KP: Oh yes, absolutely yes. It’s amazing. The internet is a new frontier. You can control and own your content. It keeps me fresh, vital and young at heart. Young in the mind and spirit.

America has Sexually Transmitted Infections There is a lot of information out there for sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), also known as STD’s. You think with all this info safer sex would be practiced everywhere... But the truth is, it isn’t. Only 17% of adults reported using a condom when having sex. The upside of safer sex is that it protects you from infections, as well as unwanted pregnancy, and in a world where one in every five people in America have some form of an STI, why would you not want to protect yourself? That means 65 million people in America carry an STI and can pass it to others. But what is more alarming is the number of people who are unaware of their own infections. For example, nearly 45 36 | DELUX Magazine V3 Issue 5

million Americans have genital herpes, and of that population, 80% are unaware they have it.

If you have an STI, it is important to realize you are not alone. Nearly 50% of people will get some form of an STI during their lifetime. But it is also important to not pass the infection on to others. If you are unsure how to talk about it with your partner, here are some tips. Before talking, make sure you have all the facts, and talk with a health care provider about your STI. Ask about treatment options, and whether your partner may need treatment. Also ask what you need to do so that you do not pass on the STI. Safer sex is your right and you should be treated it as such. But still, it can be nervewracking or awkward to try and bring it up in the bedroom, or to even just talk about. You may not know when to bring up the topic, but it is best to talk about it before you have sex. However, it is never too late

to bring it up. Many people are happy to find out just how supportive their partner can be and how having this conversation can bring them closer. If your partner decides to end the relationship, you can feel good that you were honest with them. By talking about your STI, it shows you can be trusted and that you care about your partner’s health as well as your own. It is your right to practice safe sex. If your partner resists safe sex, it may be time to rethink and reevaluate the relationship. Do you really want to be with someone who does not care about being safe? And if they give the excuse that they can’t feel anything with a condom on, you may want to remind them that it will feel a lot better than sleeping alone. For more information about STI’s, get tested and treated please visit www. plannedparenthood.org/stlouis or call 1-800230-PLAN (7526).

baratunde thurston a technology-loving comedian from the future who cares enough about the world to engage with it politically. Yes, he votes. Regularly. With an ancestry that includes a great-grandfather who taught himself to read, a grandmother who was the first black employee at the U.S. Supreme Court building and a mother who took over radio stations in the name of the black liberation struggle, Baratunde has long been taught to question authority. It helps that he was raised in Washington, D.C. under crackhead Mayor Marion Barry. His creative and inquisitive mind, forged by his mother’s lessons and polished by a philosophy degree from Harvard, have found expression in the pages of Vanity Fair and the The UK Independent, on the radio waves of WNYC, where he is a regular contributor and on the screens of news networks such as CNN, MSNBC, BBC, Al Jazeera English and This Week In Tech. He even hosted his own

show on Discovery Science called Popular Science’s Future Of. Far from simply appearing in media, Baratunde is also helping defining its future. In 2006 he co-founded Jack & Jill Politics, a black political blog whose coverage of the 2008 Democratic National Convention has been archived by the Library Of Congress. For the past four years, he has helped bring one of America’s finest journalistic institutions into the future, serving as Director of Digital for The Onion. In 2011 he was a judge for the Knight News Challenge, a media innovation contest which funds experiments in the future of news. His book, How To Be Black, will be published by Harper Collins in February 2012. His most significant expression, however, is probably his own creative experimentation with new digital platforms. He was named Foursquare Mayor of the Year for holding a real-world rally to defend his virtual mayorship. Every year he live hate-tweets the Twilight movies to his 100,000+ Twitter followers, and in 2009, he embodied the swine flu with a Twitter account of that name. His wide range of experience and activity has earned him an equally wide range of praise. The ACLU of Michigan honored him “for changing the political and social landscape one laugh at a time.” He was nominated for the Bill Hicks Award for Thought Provoking

Comedy. The Root added him to its list of 100 most influential African Americans. Fast Company listed him as one of the 100 Most Creative People In Business. Then-candidate Barack Obama called him “someone I need to know,” and YouTube user “mooospot” referred to him as a “dumbass liberal crackhead welfare sucker.” When he’s not staring at a glowing rectangle, Mr. Thurston, which he goes by near the end of his bio, travels the world, speaking and advising on the subjects of our digital future and storytelling, satire and democracy, and race and politics. In the past two years alone he has spoken at South by Southwest, Google Atmosphere, the Online News Association Conference, Netroots Nation, the Mashable Awards, Web 2.0 Expo, Personal Democracy Forum, Internet Week NY, Social Media Week, TribeCon, the ACLU Annual Dinner (Mass., Mich. and Okla.), Surf Summit 14 (Mexico), The AtlanTech Dinner (Paris), The FD Summit (Amsterdam) and Digital Directions (Australia). In May 2011, he spoke at the presidential palace in Tbilisi, Georgia (the country) on the role of satire in a healthy democracy. Baratunde performs standup comedy regularly in New York City, resides in Brooklyn, lives on Twitter and has over 30 years experience being black.

D In the earliest stages of your career, were there moments you wanted to give up and go home? What was your driving force that kept you on your path? CB The modeling industry is very competitive; especially in New York City. I definitely had moments where I doubted myself but I have always been ambitious and very passionate about my dreams. The driving force that kept me on my path was my faith in God and believing in myself. Failure was not an option. D Tell us about "THE moment" you felt success: The defining moment when you stopped and said, "I did it!" CB “THE moment” I felt like I was a successful model was when I was chosen by Iman to be one of the models featured in a Vanity Fair photoshoot shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. It was a validating moment in my life because it was the first time I modeled alongside industry “greats” such as Iman, Beverly Johnson, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, and Liya Kebede. There was so much power and beauty in the room that day. I will never forget it. D What did you think you were going to be when you grew up? CB Growing up, I was interested in being a news anchor because I knew I wanted to be on television. However, that all changed once I was scouted by an agent from Wilhelmina Models. As life would have it, I eventually went on to do television; just not as a news anchor. D Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you? CB My mother has been the biggest influence on my life. She taught me to love myself, believe in myself, and never settle for anything less than I deserve. My mother had big dreams for herself but never followed them because of unfortunate circumstances. I think becauseshe was never able to follow her dreams, she really pushed and supported me to fulfill mine. I believe in some way she feels like she has been able to live out her dreams through me.

D Can you describe the moment when you saw your child for the first time? CB The first time I held Noelle, I fell in love. I knew that she would forever be the most important thing in my life. I would do anything and everything to guide and protect her. D

How has being a parent changed you?

CB Being a parent has forever changed my life. Before, I only had to be responsible for my life. Now I am also responsible for Noelle’s life and well-being. I have a lot of jobs but none of them are more important than being Noelle’s mom. Noelle is my world.

D

When in life have you felt most alone?

CB I have never felt alone in my life. Even in my worst moments, I felt that God was with me. D

How would you like to be remembered?

CB I would like to be remembered as someone who was never afraid to go for it and live life to the fullest. You only have one chance to create the life that you want for yourself.

little tybee Little Tybee oozes southern charm with a dash of classicism capable of penetrating a generation of music fans beyond their own years. - ‘i guess i’m floating’

LITTLE TYBEE is building momentum, and it won’t be long until they capture the hearts of indie and alternative lovers everywhere. Their most recent album HUMOROUS TO BEES has drawn a lot of attention over the last year, with buzz building quickly over a new release on the way. Their songs are elegant and sweet, filled with vocal melodies and harmony that will make you swoon with delight. On record and live, they present a level of musicianship that sounds deceptively simple but reveals its complexity further with every listen. Employing subtle Latin rhythms and intricate jazz guitar licks, Little Tybee makes a distinctly unique sound that captures their unrestrained originality. Aside from solely making music, the band recently collaborated with artist TOM HANEY to produce one of the most beautiful and impressive music videos of 2011, BOXCAR FAIR. By combining an exquisite

puppetry performance with dreamy set designs, they succeeded in producing a whimsical experience with which they could bring their audience. They shot the entire film in one take without cuts or edits. As a result of their work and creativity, the video was chosen as an official selection at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and has received praised by numerous blogs and media features, including top picks on iTunes and YouTube. LITTLE TYBEE is a band that you will continue to see a lot of in the near future. They are about to embark on a US tour to spread their infectious sounds. Also keep an eye out for them at SXSW 2012 in Austin where they are scheduled for numerous shows, including the PAPER GARDEN RECORDS showcase.

the man: the legend... here's soop Nowadays everyone wants to have swag. That unspoken something that sets one apart from their peers. While the masses flock to the same places in search of originality, Soope Da Roadrunner watches in amusement, nonchalantly brushing his hair. “They wouldn’t have to worry about finding swag if they had mojo.” Soope Da Roadrunner has been mastering his craft around the Midwest for the past 10 years. Hailing from Indiana and leaning heavily on corporate strategy with street sensibility, this east side import could very well be the region’s answer to The Game or Jay-Z. He has released a bevy of mixtapes and promotional singles, building his fan base and even scathing the Billboard’s Hot 100 R&B and Hip Hop albums chart. He has also been covered in such national publications as The Source, Vibe, and XXL. One fan offers, “Soope hits topics every listener can relate to. His voice speaks conviction and reality that is totally believable.” The same voice is also making a place for the young luminary outside of music as well. Not comfortable relying on his mic dreams to ensure stardom; Soope has popped up in some unusual places for an emcee. Not many aspiring anything’s can hold court with a seasoned veteran like Will Smith. However, Soope did just that in the 2008 film 7 Pound, appearing as one of Smith’s doctors. He also starred in Cannes Film Festival winner, The Immigrant, along with the accompanying song and music video. His talents landed him in front of the lens of coveted music video director, Christopher Adams (Lupe Fiasco, The Game, Twista), who directed Soope’s most recent treatment, “Dem Streets.”

Now positioned to execute a winning hand, Soope has joined forces with Chicago’s own Czr and garnered the support of Power 92’s DJ Kid Scratch, who is currently spinning Soope hits like “Personal Trainer.” He has been performing at some of the hottest spots nationwide, recently making appearances in Chicago, L.A., and Indianapolis, NYC. Soope has even made the leap across the globe, working with artist and producers from UK, Netherlands & Germany. Recording with UK pop sensation Natalie Rodgers, Soope has a song that Top 20 on B-port Men On Mars “F**K That Sh**. Soope videos are the best seen and delightfully creative from any independent artist I have ran across- Soope has worked with well known Video Directors from Christopher Adams- Chicago, Kraze King of Content- NYC, & Nick Brazinsky -Chicago, who recently release Soope lastest powerful video “King”, MLK & "When You Come Home" for all the soldiers around the world. The streets are definitely buzzing about Soope Da Roadrunner. Soope Da Roadrunna’s latest mixtape features rhymes about a land scape that few know exist. Soope’s real life stories and fluent flow keeps listeners engaged from beginning to end. Many of today’s top artist have blessed Soope with contributions to this mixtape release. His poetry featured on international recording artist L-Vis 1990’s debut album Neon Dreams released in October 2011 through PMR/Island/ Universal Records. Heavily influenced by Amiri Baraka and Gil Scott-Heron, Black hones his skills at open-mic nights as one of the St. Louis’premier poets. The project is available for download on his bandcamp page for free, but encourages his fans to download, donate, and share. “It’s all about being innovative and breaking molds,” says Black. “With this project, I wanted to do something that hasn’t been done before, but I wanted to do it in a way that was stylish, artistic, and would set me apart from other poets.”

Prior to being a spoken word artist, Black served in the United States Marine Corps. He draws on that experience as a catalyst to create his art. Black believes, “hip hop is rooted in truth; and people are intrigued by my reality.” Black is currently enrolled at Missouri Baptist University and majors in English/Secondary Education. why city of god is a better movie than scarface When Brian De Palma’s Scarface was released 25 years ago, it introduced the world to a new brand/breed of gangsta movie. Ins main character, Tony Montana (uh hell naw im not talking about Future), inspired a generation with his “balls and my world” [pause] mantra. But a few years ago a new film made its way into the ring and the champion had a #1 contender: City of God(even though my man Brooklyn will disagree and scream Shottas).

of God set the ‘hood on fire and gained Oscar nomination for Best Foriegn film and opening doors for movies like Slumdog Millionaire.

Released May 2005, hip-hop never has seen a film like this. It was personal; it was ghetto; it was 3 hours long, and oh yeah, it had subtitles. Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund, City of God told the story of Brazil’s notorious favela slums. Based on Paolo Lin’s book, Cidade De Deus, the film exploded onto the scene like a shot of Organo Gold Coffee in the morning. Behind word-of-mouth props that just wouldnt go away and strong critical acclaim, City

The only thing in our opinion that Scarface has over City of God is the face that Scarface was actually based off true FBI files and extensive research of Oliver Stone on the 1970s drug game. Now that -ish was dope. But do us a favor thank us later. Go cop, burn, download, City of God and tell us that that movie is not #1... and I’m a true BELLY fan. STORY: KEITH GRIFFIN II

With that said, the big cojones at Black Market wanted to throw’em on the table by being the first to say that City of God is the new ‘hood flick to beat, the best ‘hood movie of all time. And prove the point, we’re gonna throw it at the grand champ, Scarface.

Jennifer Hudson achieved fame (and an Academy Award) in Dreamgirls, but much of her life was the stuff of nightmares. The soulful Chicago-born singer, who got started singing in her South Side church choir before she wowed the judges on the third season of American Idol, has had to deal with tragedy and trauma throughout her life, and she’s felt the pain of being judged by her appearance instead of her talent.

Gladwell’s latest book, “Outliers,” is a passionate argument for taking the second version of the story more seriously than we now do. “It is not the brightest who succeed,” Gladwell writes. “Nor is success simply the sum of the decisions and efforts we make on our own behalf. It is, rather, a gift. Outliers are those who have been given opportunities — and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.”

In her intimately personal and inspirational memoir, I Got This, Hudson tells all, opening up about her struggles with success, relationships, weight and body image. Along the way, she lets us in on lots of juicy stories about her experiences on Idol, Dreamgirls, making her Grammy®-winning album, dealing with backstabbing competition, and more— stories her fans have been waiting to hear!

He doesn’t actually tell his own life story in the book. (But he lurks offstage, since he does describe the arc of his mother’s Jamaican family.) Instead, he tells other success stories, often using the device of back-to-back narratives.
