2016 US Presidential Race By: Gabrielle Grant

Similar to any other election, there are always some candidates that are more well known than others. With household names like Bush and Clinton running in the 2016 Presidential Election, they may overshadow less-known contenders. As November 2016 nears, what should voters know about some of the candidates before casting their ballot?

DEMOCRATS

Although vice president Joe Biden has not officially declared his run for presidency, there has been speculation that he will announce his decision before the end of September. Prior to this race, Biden dropped out of the 2008 presidential race. In addition to his vice president position, the Pennsylvania native was also a senator from Delaware for 36 years. Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton’s campaign emphasizes income equality and aiding the middle class, which will most likely reverberate with women. While she is one of the more popular candidates in the running, it is still a question as to whether or not corruption accusations will be a hindrance. A former member of the 1960’s Civil Rights organization, the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Bernie Sanders has consistently demonstrated his commitment to civil and women’s rights, economic development, fair and humane immigration policies, racial justice, and bridging the gap between income and wealth inequality. is currently serving his second term in the U.S. Senate representing the state of Vermont after winning with 71 percent of the vote. Jim Webb is pushing for a more controlled foreign policy and a modified defense policy. He has also publicly criticized the Iraq War and President Obama’s policies on the Middle East. The former senator from Virginia’s somewhat conservative views make him less attractive to Democrats. Former Republican Rhode Island governor and senator Lincoln Chafee highlights the importance of national security and speaks about how invading Iraq was not a good idea and the aftermath of the war. Chafee is also the voice constantly reminding voters that his opponent Hillary Clinton voted in agreeance with President George W. Bush to invade Iraq. He has been quoted saying, “I enjoy challenges, and today we have many facing America.”

REPUBLICANS

Donald Trump is another well-known aspiring president. From his controversial comments about Mexican immigrants to the fact that he has never held a position in office, many people are wondering how serious he is about this particular election after hinting at running in the past. Nonetheless, the successful, wealthy businessman commenced his campaign at the Trump Tower on June 16. Jeb, an acronym for John Ellis Bush, Bush is the

son and brother of two former presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, respectively. The Texas native was governor of Florida from 1999 until 2007. Bush is known for his modest standpoint on immigration. Ben Carson is a retired neurosurgeon who has never held elective office. He is known for his controversial stance on Obamacare and his speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast where he criticized President Obama. He is also known for his controversial views on women’s rights and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The Yale University graduate is also married with three children. This next contender is the son of previous presidential candidate Ron Paul. Even though Rand Paul does not actually identify with the Republican Party, his stances on justice, the security of future generations, and lowering taxes have secured him libertarian support. He has been a senator from Kentucky since 2011. Before Gov. Chris Christie became governor of New Jersey, he was the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey for seven years. The father of four is most known for the “Bridgegate” scandal that occurred in 2013. Unlike most politicians, Christie is focusing on sensitive issues such as education and entitlements. In earlier elections, he has won twice in two predominantly Democratic states.

WE ARE FAMILY. WE ARE A COMMUNITY. WE LOVE ST. LOUIS. Its a little disappointing that every issue we publish that there is some type of tragedy I must speak on. Rather injustices by an overly militarized police state or rather its a senseless murderthat adds to the ever growing number of homicides in our city. So, I decided to speak about family... I am personally deeply saddened by the senseless murder of 9 year old Jamyla Bolden. Thats not to say Im not upset about Mansur Ball-Bey or the other 131 murders (at last count) that happen throughout our communities everyday. But Jamyla hit home because I have 3 children around that age. And to have their lives clipped before seeing them fully blossum is gutwrenching. I just wish I had a REAL solution. A real way to uplift these individuals and give them better options. I do believe making excuses for every little thing hampers our progreess. I do understand there are economic, educational and social deficiets we all are challenged with trying to get “out the hood”. But it is possible. We have shown as a people that it is possible to overcome. We have grown so much but are still so far behind. I realize the person reading these words is more than likely not the person I need to be “preaching” to-- but YOU are the person who can help that person behind you who just needs a helping hand. We must focus on community. We must focus on family. Once we change this mindstate-- That change is going to come. *jumps off soapbox* Well here we are ISSUE #40 whoop whoop!! 40 issuesthat’s kinda exciting -- Maybe we should do a party when we hit the BIG 5-0!! Would you come? Of course you would lol... But anyway -- we were able to catch up with The People Champion, Urban League CEO Mike McMillan. Let me tell this guy is a cool as a polar bear’s toe nail. I have always seen him out at speaking engagements and fundraisers but never had the priviliedge to speak to him one on one. He just a great guy with an abundance of knowledge and who is addicted to Game of Thrones just like me). He has a true love for St. Louis and he deserves to be the rock he is in the community. This being our 1st ever community and philanthropy edition I think we did very well. The DELUX team is fantastic and with out all that talent- -trust me DELUX could not be this amazing! PEOPLE ON THE MOVE: CHARLI COOKSEY

I

n her 4 years of working with the St. Louis School system Charli Cooksey, co-founder of Inspire STL, has helped make an extraordinary impact on students and how we view education in the eyes of others through the organization. Over 140 scholars placed in the region’s most rigorous college-prep high schools , securing over $1.5 million in scholarship and financial aid , and 100% of their first graduation class accepted to fouryear colleges and universities such as St. Louis University, University of San Francisco, University of Notre Dame, and more. It’s no wonder why her contribution to InspireSTL has helped them grow into a nationally recognized organization. Growing up Cooksey stated that education wasn’t an option for her, it was a non-negotiable commitment. As a graduate of Prairie View A&M University in Political Science and nearing completion of her master’s in secondary education from University of Missouri-St. Louis., she is fully aware of what a great education means to your future. She says, “When I struggled in Math earlier on my parents took the initiative to ensure that I had additional private tutoring to support my academic progress.” She also stated that she was able to develop a unique and distinctive perspective towards the world through the experiences her family immersed her in such as attending lectures, theatre productions, art shows, and etc. Cooksey not only credits her family for her achievements and success, but she credits those that laid the knowledge and foundation for her and others. When asked who inspires her she states that Dr. King, Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis and other freedom fighters , who dedicated their lives to get rid of the tyranny and unfairness in our system so that we could have a better life today . She also says, “Equally inspirational to me is my community and the youth I encounter daily. So many of them are not even aware of the injustices that pave the road in which they journey daily.”

dre day the chronic vs compton

Cooksey along with the other co-founders Jimmy Kelly, Sonya Forg, and Kathryn Flores, all former Teach For America Corps Members, would go on to take that same inspirational mindset and form Inspire STL. Inspire STL serves as a nonprofit organization that encourages high performing, potential, and underrated scholars a chance to emerge as future leaders by providing them with the preparation, access, and support throughout their educational journey. A journey that starts with a nine year commitment from Inspire STL , which begins with the recruitment process at 7th grade all the way through their college years with the help of a partnered InspireSTL Coach. By seeing the potential in these youths earlier on, she was able to help build an organization that helps students look past their circumstances and build on their current strengths. She advises everyone that this is an organization that has evolved into being a vital and irreplaceable part of the educational and youth development network here in St. Louis. DELUX POET’S SOCIETY

40 ACRES LATER BY: TRIPP FONTANE

This is not a threat This isn’t even another angry poem Or an “I refuse to be complacent until goals are reached and demands met” poem This is more of a “If freedom ever had a price then we for damn sure paid it poem” I think we are running out of options to explore poem I thought... at some point we could make it passed this peacefully That my degree would open into an umbrella big enough to fight back against the water hoses I thought that my mastery of the American English would be able to drown out the barks of the attack dogs These fruit are still very strange This place we call home is still very foreign To be very forward The content of my character has yet to be accurately measured Underneath it all I still find myself equated to... Sub-human The paper bag is lighter than it has ever been How dare me Spend years pledging allegiance to a banner that banned me from my civil liberties My rights have been left out of the bill How come our pursuit to life and liberty are the only ones met with caution tape and dismissed cases The media painted America’s worst nightmare in my image You bought them didn’t you? Gave them to your children as gifts Cheap lies sold by the broadcast You invested in them Raised their stock from rumors to reality

Stereotypes became our theme music You didn’t even bother to investigate for yourself How many phone cameras, dash cameras, body cameras have to be reviewed to prove I’m innocent Our streets are growing weary from the weight of million man marches Our voices are growing hoarse from requesting your permission to be equal We are finished asking This is not a threat This isn’t even another angry poem An I refuse to be complacent until goals are reached and demands met poem This is a freedom was always free poem There are no other options Tripp Fontane is a member of a Dayton based poetry collective entitled Metaphorically Speaking as well as a collective entitled Underdog Academy. LARRY HUGHES • JAMES CLARK

LARRY HUGHES Words by:Oliver Sparton

Larry Hughes has been able to live out his dreams in every shape and fashion. He has been a prolific player throughout his basketball career helping his high school team win a state championship, playing alongside the great Allen Iverson, and helping a younger LeBron James get to his first NBA finals. He has been a great husband, family man, philanthropist, and a teacher of the game he loves. It’s that same love for the game and being one of the best collegiate players in the history Saint Louis that makes him the perfect man to help other young athletes reach their level of excellence. Hughes’s first D1 D UP Tournament for all groups and ages wrapped up weeks ago and it was a success. It was a way for family and friends to showcase their talents and skills on the court. It was also a fundraising event that helped raise awareness for his D1 Basketball program. According to Hughes he says that it served its purpose and created enough support and information for others wanting to get involved with the program. The D1 Basketball program, which is an affiliated of D1 Sports, has been around for several years now and Saint Louis is the second home amongst many other locations led by other professional NBA players. Alongside Hughes’s annual summer basketball camp, the D1 Basketball program is now offering a year round program geared towards improving basketball ability, basketball IQ, and skill development on and off the court for young athletes. He says, “This means there are fundamentals skills that are taught for basketball such as ball handling, dribbling, correct shooting form but also life skills and character building whether it’s at school or at home….We also try to focus on specific position skills which I feel like is missing in most programs.” In this day and age where a lot of professional players are getting into brawls in the locker rooms, at bars, or just creating a bad name for themselves; the D1 Basketball program is setting the bar by creating not just excellent athletes but future businessmen, fathers, and even role models for the next class of young athletes. He has mentioned that a lot of the work we do with these kids is intense through repetition drills and training but in the end its rewarding and we try to make it fun as well.

if they don’t start out young. He says, “Its becomes an overall deal nowadays with so many kids picking a sport early because the ones that do gain a greater competitive edge over those who start out playing sports later on in their lives… or those kids who play more than one sport.” He adds to his statement by saying that although his son loves to play other sports, he wants to become a better basketball player so they’re focusing more on him now becoming a skillful player. And just like the game of basketball is forever changing for younger players, Larry recognizes the game of basketball itself is changing as well, especially on the professional level. He adds that it’s becoming a more offensive game than defensive game from when he played in the NBA. But he reminds me that it’s not a bad thing, he says,”… it’s keeping the game interesting and allowing other players to play different positions on the floor.” When it comes down to it, Hughes knows that it not only takes being a great player on the court but it also takes being a great person off the court. The same ethics and morals he teaches his players are also the same principles that he has lived by his whole life. He states that he has been able to maintain a positive image because he knows that there are kids who look up to him or want to understand what he’s doing and why he’s doing it. He also says, “…..Another reason is because I have kids so I want to be a good role model at home first ….that’s what keeps me grounded when I think I want to go out and do something special [crazy].” Hughes’s wife and kids are his inspiration in life. It’s what has shaped his outlook on life and helping others around him. Whether it’s the time shared on the court with kids or assisting families with youth dealing with illnesses relating to organ transplants through the Larry Hughes Family Foundation. He has put himself in a league of distinguish individuals. For more information on major events and his foundation check out d1basketballstl.com and larryhughesworld.com .

When asked about what challenges his son as well as other young athletes face today, he replies that it’s a lot harder now for kids to succeed in a sport DELUX MAGAZINE

JAMES CLARK Words by:Ashley Kane

James Clark, a community leader that has been working with St. Louis residents for over twenty five years. After an honorable and successful term in the United States Army, he started working with Better Family Life, an outreach organization in St. Louis, Missouri. There he started the Role Model Experience Program that mentored juveniles who remained in detention centers. Mr. Clark then became Administrative Assistant to the Mayor of St. Louis; he oversaw youth summits, job fairs and recreational programs. In 1998, he returned to Better Family Life, and in 2000 he was appointed as Vice President of BFL. Throughout these years Clark has continued to advocate for change from the political powers as well as the community members. Most of us are aware of the problems that plague our city, the homelessness, loss of jobs, lack of proper educational funding, and we hear nightly the violence in our streets. How do we repair a broken system, plagued by racism and corruption. When James Clark speaks, he does it with conviction and passion for his community. Where does he get the desire to keep going, to keep forging ahead? He said “it comes from seeing others in great disparity. I look myself in the mirror and ask, am I impacting the trajectory of people’s lives”. He said for him it was never about cars, clothes, or money. For Clark, “life is about helping people. I used my intelligence to solve a problem, making this place better then when I got here”. Clark has continued to expand programs like Pulpit 2 Porches and Neighborhood Alliance that empowers neighborhood churches to aid with social programs, job placements, G.E.D. classes, legal and utility assistance. Clark believes families don’t know where to turn, and if there were resources in the community, families would engage in opportunities and success. The BFL program will support and help fund the churches to further these initiatives. It started with just one church. They now have eightyseven active churches. Clark professes, it’s mandatory that churches show increased presence in every block. He says, “we must end the downward spiral of our challenged neighborhoods, and the church is in the best position to help black people”. Just as the church played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, it must now become the cornerstone to troubled streets of St. Louis. There’s definite progress, the Neighborhood Alliance has instituted twelve drug treatment programs, abet 19 residents in finding employment and assisted 25 people in obtaining their G.E.D..

One of the most important curriculums James Clark has developed is the “We Must Stop Killing Each Other” campaign. This grassroots movement allowed 10,000 residents to spread their belief in the program by displaying the We Must Stop Killing Each Other yard sign. Although there’s been great promotion, killings continue in St. Louis every single night. Clark insists this is not a problem that police and politicians can solve, he says, “We are the number one killer of ourselves, no other race kills each other more. All we have to do is stop. We will always have conflict, and gun laws will not impact the crime rate. People kill people; you failed the test. We have to create better people who resolve conflict instead of killing.” Clark’s honest and profound words remind us of our own shortcomings. Some cover up hurt and insecurity then act out in ways to numb the pain. Clark says, “once we challenge our self to discover our purpose, to be service to mankind, then our lives become real”. There’s hope though, there’s real change happening one household at a time. One mother called Clark to tell him all the wonderful gifts her family received. Her daughter had finally enrolled in the CNA program she’s been talking about, her son had all of his warrants expunged and her grandson had earned a spot in Job Corps. Stories like this reminds James Clark every day of his dedication to what he calls a “personal mission”. A journey to change lives. Clark affirms frustration is an easy road to take, but with progress, you possess great happiness. He recalls an interaction he had recently at a gas station. Clark bumped into a former student he mentored. The student professed “Mr. Clark, the stuff you told me, I now tell my son”. The reward makes all the risk, sweat, tears, and time worth the sacrifice. As his inspirational journey continues, Clark’s life is about service. He enjoys spending time with his family, working out, and the feeling of inspiring someone to change their path. He quoted DMX in saying, “We each have a star, all we have to do is find it. Once you do, everyone who sees it will be blinded”. CLIENTS YOU MAY KNOW:

Keke Palmer, Tammy Rivera (Love & Hip-Hop ATL), rapper Tiffany Foxx, TS Madison, Cyn Santana and Kimbella (Love & Hip-Hop NY) D: How long have you had a passion for makeup artistry? And what made you decide to go pro? CW: My passion began when I worked at MAC Cosmetics as a freelance artist around 3 years ago. I chose to become a professional when I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Nothing makes me happier than makeup! D: Over the last year, we’ve seen your career blossom from a working artist to “Celebrity Makeup Artist”. How were you able to make this transition seemingly overnight? CW: Honestly, I will always consider myself a working artist. It keeps me hungry and humble. I feel that most “celebrity” makeup artists rely on that title and become lazy or overly cocky. I never want to become neither. D: Who would be your dream client to work with in the future? CW: I have always been obsessed with Raven Symone, so she is at the top of my list! Amber Rose is another one. Her face is perfection to me! Others that I adore are Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj and Naomi Campbell. D: What are your fav go-to products when giving your clients the ultimate “beat”? CW: My holy-grail products would be Ardell Demi Wispie Faux Strip Lashes, MAC Gold Deposit Skinfinish, Black Opal True Color Stick Foundation, L.A. Girl HD Pro Conceal Concealer, and Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. D: You’ve stated before that “contouring” is your favorite makeup technique. Why do you love it so much? And what are the benefits of a good contour? CW: I love contouring because you can literally change any facial feature that may not be your favorite or you feel is a flaw. With contouring, you can slim your nose or make your forehead appear smaller! Want higher cheekbones? Contour! Want a more defined jawline? Contour!

D: What advice would you give to aspiring pro artists looking to follow in your footsteps? CW: Always practice. Never feel that you have learned all that you can learn… Remain humble. It attracts more people to you… And get out here and network. D: What’s next for Carta Works? CW: Continuing to work! I will never get comfortable. I want to stay on top of my game and expand my brand. I’ll also be a part of several events this summer, including a networking luncheon for beauty professionals and a hands-on makeup workshop. D: How can our followers get in contact with you to schedule an appointment of their own? CW: For appointments, you can email me at bookingcartaworks@gmail.com. Fall is fast approaching, but is your skin ready?! If you’re like most of us, the answer is a depressing no!... Well, don’t fret. Here are a few pro skin care techniques that you can try at home to get your skin ready for fun in the sun to the coolness of Fall.

N

Written by April Whittington, LE DELUX Beauty Editor Editor Licensed Esthetician / Owner, SKIN by April www.facebook.com/SkinByApril IG: @SkinByApril www.skinbyapril.com

FAKE IT...

Unfortunately, there are no short-cuts to healthy skin. True skin health takes a commitment to eating well, drinking plenty of water, following a consistent home-care routine, and regular visits to a pro facialist! But for those of us that must have our instant gratification, there are a few products available that can help you to achieve an instant glow. One solution to try is a good oil-based serum. Steer clear of heavy oils that will leave your skin looking and feeling greasy or oily. Opt instead for a high quality oil-based serum that won’t clog your pores but will leave your skin glowing and dewy looking, such as Sonya Dakar’s Organic Omega Booster ($124). Another fab remedy is to use a serumtype mist. These serum mists are also oil-based and amazing for smoothening the skin and leaving it with an instant radiance. One worth trying is Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir ($49) also known as the ‘elixir of youth’!... You can thank me later!

DOUBLE CLEANSE...

For beauty’s sake, it is extremely important to keep your skin well cleansed. Makeup, dirt and dust can clog our pores and often lead to breakouts. When left on the skin overnight, these pollutants can cause your complexion to become dull and sallow. You want to always remember to double-cleanse your face twice daily; once in the morning and then again before going to bed. You won’t believe what a difference this will make in the way your skin glows!... To double-cleanse, you first wash your face with a deep-cleansing oil, such asDermalogica Precleanse ($38). Cleansing oils melt away the impurities and makeup from the skin, allowing your facial wash of choice to penetrate further for even better cleansing results.

EXFOLIATE...

Even the most talented makeup artist can’t camouflage dry, flaky skin. If your skin is appearing dull and sallow, the key to complexion perfection is exfoliation. You should be exfoliating your skin 1 – 3 times per week to keep it looking fresh and feeling silky smooth to the touch. You also want to choose an exfoliant that will not only take away the dead skin, but add vitamins and peptides to the skin to nourish and hydrate. You can opt for an exfoliating mask, such as Naturopathica’s Sweet Cherry Brightening Enzyme Peel($56). Or try a leave-on solution, such as Dermalogica’s Daily Resurfacer ($70).

HYDRATE...

How many times have you been told that you must drink 8 glasses of water a day in order to keep your skin looking hydrated and supple? While it’s true that drinking plenty of h2O is an important step for maintaining healthy skin, there are other ways to hydrate your skin. The best water for our cells can be found in the foods we eat. Not only will eating plenty of organic fruits and vegetables give your skin a much needed boost in antioxidants, nutrients and fiber, it also stays in your system long enough for your body to actually put it to good use…. If eating your veggie’s isn’t your thing, give yourself a quick, hydrating pick-me-up by applying a thin layer of a hydrating face mask, such as Sonya Dakar’s NutraSphere Nano Mask ($85), over your night cream and allow it to moisturize overnight.

BLAST BLEMISHES...

Having blemishes can be frustrating, but whatever you do, don’t pick at them! Picking only leads to more breakouts due to spreading its bacteria to other parts of the face, and by pushing that same bacteria even further into the skin only to come back out later. If you can’t make it in to a skin care professional for treatment, you should begin by keeping the skin well cleansed and exfoliated. For even faster results, use an oil-free acne serum, such as SkinCeuticals’ Blemish + Age Defense ($88), to unclog pores and reduce the appearance of blemishes.

WHISPER TIPS FROM BEHIND THE CHAIR... Written by “The Hair Whisperer” Tendai Morris.

I

’m certain you’ve heard these words tossed around quite a bit especially when it comes to the natural hair community. While many women make the natural hair journey look easy with their You Tube trained style techniques and experiments, others look like they are residents of Struggles-ville USA.

Let’s start with a simple truth. While African American women do produce natural oil or sebum in our scalps we do not produce enough oil or sebum from our scalps to provide proper moisture to a curly or coiled head of hair from root to end like Caucasian women and women with straighter textures. Thus contrary to popular belief. Our hair is very fragile and must be handled with gentle care. If your hair is “Thirsty” meaning ashy and dull looking, hard or rough to the touch, lifeless, brittle, and dry, then this article is for you. Let’s discuss Hydration vs Moisture and why it is so important to know the difference as you navigate your natural hair journey. Imagine a plant growing in a pot. What would happen if you only spray water on the leaves every day and never poured water into the dirt to let the roots absorb the water? The plant would shrivel up and die. With that illustration in mind let’s now examine the definitions of Hydration and Moisture as it pertains to our hair.

HYDRATION:

To supply water to (a person, for example) in order to restore or maintain fluid balance. Each pore on the surface of the skin is an opening to a canal called a follicle. The follicle also contains a hair and an oil gland (sebaceous gland). The oil gland keeps the skin lubricated and feeds the hair strand that it is attached to. Increasing your water intake will not only make you feel better, but it will also hydrate your hair from within which is where your hair comes from. If you are not drinking enough water no doubt you have dry brittle lifeless hair. Hydration has to begin inside of your body. For more Tips from The Hair Whisperer Tendai visit:

MOISTURE:

Water or other liquid diffused in a small quantity as vapor, within a solid, or condensed on a surface. In a nutshell this is what is being done when you spray water on a plant or as it pertains to this topic on our hair. Spraying water or water based products on your hair is not enough to support a healthy head of hair. Moisturizing your hair every day is pointless if your hydration is not up to par. Once the water has evaporated you are left with the same strands of lifeless hair. Try Co-washing your hair to maintain and support hydration. This simple technique will work wonders for your curl pattern as well.

THE COVER

MICHAEL MCMILLAN. Words by: Nikki Smith

I ALONE CANNOT CHANGE THE WORLD, BUT I CAN CAST A STONE ACROSS THE WATERS TO CREATE MANY RIPPLES. -MOTHER TERESA

T

his quote resonates not only with the essence of this edition but also with the very being of the man who is featured on this cover. Michael McMillan is a man who literally throughout his whole life has lived out the true meaning of community servitude. Humbled in character and accomplished in his career, the President & CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is a man who was born and raised in St. Louis and has worked tirelessly in its progression. Beginning in his adolescence, McMillan knew that he wanted to bring about change in his community and actively get involved in what it would take for that change to occur. On his 16th birthday he got his driver’s license, NAACP membership card, and paid for his membership to the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. “My late uncle Colonel Clifton W. Gates served as Chairman of the Board of the Urban League during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and always emphasized the importance of getting involved in these organizations that were of significant importance to the Black community.” Even as a young teenager, McMillan was determined to make a positive impact on the Black community by getting involved in organizations that ultimate served as great tools for preparing him for the unforeseen work ahead such as Better Family Life’s Youth Leadership Program and serving as one of the founding members of the Black Student Union at his high school, Bishop DuBourg. In 1992, McMillan pressed forward on his quest for community change and volunteered during one of the most critical

campaigns of the time, Freeman Bosley Jr. for Mayor of St. Louis. “It was important for us to elect an African American mayor during that time in order for us to truly give our community access to jobs and economic development.” McMillan then served as Bosley’s administrative assistant for three years before then moving on to become the youngest person in the history of St. Louis to run for Alderman. “This came from the community’s desire to have African American representation on the Board of Alderman. I saw there was a need and I wanted to do something to address it.” He is certainly a man that isn’t afraid to rise to the occasion and be of service to those around him. After serving as Alderman for 10 years, McMillan then served as the License Collector of the City of St. Louis where he represented approximately 20,000 businesses and collected approximately $60 million dollars in business tax revenues annually that were redistributed to city agencies. In 2013 Michael McMillan was named the President & CEO of Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. With over 50 social service programs, has led the St. Louis institution has been ranked #1 across Urban League’s national affiliate and is listed as a 5 star agency. With the construction of the new community empowerment center in Ferguson, and with plans to begin construction for a center in the city, the Urban League continues to be at the forefront of addressing issues regarding economic disenfranchisement, education, and career development.

mentorship programs and occasions to recognize those who are doing exceptional work which is exampled in his creation of the Salute to Women in Leadership was created by McMillan over 10 years ago to recognize women who have given far beyond the call of duty to the disadvantaged and underserved. In 2013, the program received an award from the MO State Martin Luther King Celebration Commission. This event has earned the reputation of being among the most prestigious in the region to recognize outstanding women leaders. Humbled by his accomplishments and the ability to help others, he attributes his success to the many men and women who have been supporters, community members, mentors, and educators that have all served as an inspiration for true community empowerment. “I owe a tremendous debt to the residents and leaders of St. Louis. My goal now is that I inspire others to pay it forward and as they achieve success, reach back and help those around you achieve an equal or greater level of success.” As the before mentioned quote by Mother Theresa implies, one may not be able to change the world on their own, but they can certainly cast the stone that creates the ripple. Michael McMillan is the epitome of that.

Being a man that has made it a career to create opportunities for the community he serves, he is also passionate about

PAY IT FOWARD.... ANNIE MALONE In 1886, orphans of color were treated poorly in the St. Louis Community. A group by the name of the Woman’s Temperance Union found it upon themselves to fix the injustices these orphans were facing. Two years later, the “St. Louis Colored Orphans Home” was founded. Soon after, a woman named Annie Malone took over as the board chairman and donated $10,000 to build a home for these children. The home was renamed the Annie Malone Children’s Home after all the hard work and dedication that Malone had put into the home. Over the years, the home has devoted its services to taking care of the needs of the community. The Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center has been open for 125 years and offers services such as Crisis Care and Emergency Residential placement, a Transitional Living Program, Parenting Education, and the Emerson Academy Therapeutic School. Each program helps provide a safe environment for teens, as well as helps teens achieve more in their education as well as their personal life. While many may not know about the center, most are familiar with the fundraising and serving events that the center hosts and are scheduled year round. Events range from ice cream socials to parades to soirees. The main event the center holds is called the May Day Parade, which is one of the biggest and well-known events for the Annie Malone Center. The center also partners up with companies such as Ameren Missouri, BJC Healthcare, and Fox 2 News, during each event. New CEO of the AMCFSC, William H. Young, is leading a reposition for the center to become more recognized in the public eye. With plans to increase visibility and make new partnerships, Young is certain that the center is a safety net for the St. Louis community and that the community deserves to know what the center is doing and how they can help. There are many ways to get involved with the Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center. To get connected to the AMCFSC or donate, visit anniemalone.com/volunteer.html or call (314) 5310120.

COMMUNITY COCA COCA, the Center of Creative Arts, has been dubbed as one of the most valuable community assets in the St. Louis metropolitan area because of it efforts to unify and educate the community through the arts and serve as a platform for creative expression.

With each workshop, performance and art exhibition, COCA strives to uphold its mission statement of “Enriching lives and building community through the arts” by providing spectators with a unique and diverse perspective of the arts and its influence around the world.

COCA, originally designed by world-renowned architect Eric Mendelsohn, has been sharing the versatility of art with St. Louisans since 1986 and has been serving as the primary staple of the art community for almost three decades to date.

Here you can enjoy theatrical plays in its 400-seat theater, ballet performances, art galleries, summer camps and over 1,000 classes for all ages-from precious infants of 6 months to career-driven adults.

As the story goes, an experienced developer who envisioned an innovative space where young artists and creatives could house their work and share the evolving world of art with others founded this multi-faceted facility along with the aide of five fellow visionaries.

COCA’s efforts within the St. Louis community are educational just as much as it is entertaining. From dance and fitness to theatre and voice, a distinguished faculty of professionally trained artist-instructors teaches each class to more than 15,000 children, teens and adults annually.

Once Richard Baron teamed up with the late Dorothy Dubinsky, Mark Twain Banks, Robert Orchard, the Sachs Fund and Trivers Associates, COCA was undergoing construction and well on its way.

It continues to place its students in prestigious post-secondary programs including The Juilliard School and the Tisch School for the Arts often resulting in career opportunities in nationally known dance companies such as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and the Joffrey Ballet as well.

The initial $2 million renovation plan quickly resulted in many millions donated towards expansion years later due to the increasing support of St. Louis’s art-enthused community. In September of 2004, COCA’s decision makers decided to begin building once again to accommodate the influx of people drawn to the city’s most prestige art institution and incubator. The 47,000 square foot addition made between 2004 and 2005 now allows COCA to provide imaginative and meaningful arts programming to 50,000 plus area residents year round.

It has been recognized by the community as “Best Arts Organization” in St. Louis by the Riverfront Times, is featured on the National Register of Historic Places, runs an extensive outreach program offered to low-income youth through its nationally recognized Urban Arts Program and provides more than $932,000 in free arts education programs and scholarships to more than 4,000 students in low-income schools and at COCA. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the illuminating world of art shared by COCA any day of the week with doors opening at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sundays.

VOICES FOR CHILDREN “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” This quote from Nelson Mandela speaks to the vision of Voices for Children. There are approximately 1,500 St. Louis children in foster care and on any given day, Voices’ teams of child advocates represent nearly 600 of these children. Their aim is to create a community where every child is nurtured, supported, and has access to connections and resources necessary for children to know their value and reach their full potential. Voices for Children advocates for abused and neglected youth in St. Louis by representing their best interests in court and in the community. In addition, Voices for Children incorporates the Court Appointed Special Advocate® (CASA) programs for St. Louis city and county. CASA advocates change the lives of abused children by helping them move from foster care to a safe, stable home where they have a chance for a brighter future. They dedicate their hearts and minds to improving life for children in St. Louis, maintaining the child welfare system’s focus on the child. As the eyes and ears of the judge, CASA advocates provide the court a full picture of a child’s life and recommend what they think is best for him or her. The advocate also provides a voice outside of court. A CASA advocate is a key member of the family support team which includes the child, family members, other professionals involved with the child and family, and foster care providers. The advocate is also a voice for the child in other environments where the child’s best interests are at stake – school, health and mental health care sites, etc.

THE URBAN LEAGUE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS The Urban League Young Professionals of Metropolitan St. Louis is an auxiliary organization of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, comprised of young urban leaders whose time, energy and talents are dedicated to improving the welfare of St. Louis community residents. The Young Professionals are committed to seeking innovative solutions to persistent social problems, such as economic empowerment, education, civil rights, civic engagement and financial management. Their goal is to form a cohesive group of young professional leaders whom can leverage their collective experience, education, resources and talents towards improving the lives of those in need. The Young Professionals host monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc. located at 3701 Grandel Square.

Members of the community can volunteer to become a CASA advocate. The website has a plethora of information as well as advocate orientations in which information is shared and questions can be answered. Or you could choose to bring new friends to Voices and create awareness of their mission and vision. Assistance can be given through fundraising to support Voices’ child advocacy and you can even help plan an event. Contact Kelly Edwards at 314-552-2431 or kledwards@voices-stl.org to get involved. CRISIS NURSERY As adults, life can sometimes throw us a million punches. We experience stresses like job lay-offs, health issues, emotional stress, domestic violence or financial hardship. Right in the middle of our crisis, are our children, feeling the effects in the home and school. We all want what’s best for our kids and nobody understands that better than The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery. As often as you need it and as long as space is available, the Crisis Nursery is dedicated to serving your family during your time of need. The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery isn’t a 9-5 center. Since 1986, families in need can call and get help 24 hours a day. Your crisis becomes theirs and they provide assistance with no hesitation. Funded by donations and committed to preventing child abuse and neglect, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery provides short term emergency shelter for children, birth through age 12, whose families are faced with emergencies or who are in crisis. Persons needing assistance must call and speak to a center specialist before bringing their children to the facility. Staff members at the facility responsible for the care of the children undergo a thorough background check so parents can rest assured their children are in the best care. The average stay of a child or children is two to three days. During his or her stay at the Crisis Nursery, each child receives 24 hour care by trained, loving staff and volunteers. Children receive 3 well balanced meals and 3 snacks each day to ensure they get proper nutrition while at the nursery and for children dealing with life altering situations, therapeutic activities have been developed for each child’s specific situation and needs. To assist children in dealing with traumatic situations, arts and crafts activities help children with selfexpression and are used as therapeutic tools during their stay.

The Crisis Nursery does not transport students to school but the facilities do have education notebooks for school age children. Social workers work closely with the facility in case documentation to excuse a child’s absence from school is needed. Additionally, facilities have a locked entry and only the legal guardian is allowed to remove the child from the facility. The Crisis Nursery offers 14 programs to families who have or are currently in need. For example, The Umbrella Fund is available to families who need assistance in obtaining the basic necessities of life. Help with a down payment on an apartment, a utility bill, food diapers and other necessities. The Family Empowerment Program provides age appropriate toys, books and videos to further a child’s development and offers parent support groups. Children can feel and see our hardships. We can rest easy knowing there is hope! Let kids be kids. While we work things through, our children are safe for a few hours playing or a couple of days at the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery in beds, fed, nurtured and well cared for. Need more information? Visit their website www.crisisnursery.org or call the 24 hour hotline at 314-768-3201. For administrative assistance call 314292-5770.

OPERATION HELP OR HUSH Operation Help or Hush (OHOH) is a non-profit organization that was created on August 14, 2014, five days after the tragic demise of Michael Brown Jr. in Ferguson, Missouri. OHOH was founded by Tasha Burton and Charles Wade. Burton was a resident of Ferguson during this time and was involved in the protests that followed the tragedy on August 9, 2014. In a conversation with her friend, Charles Wade, Burton told him that she wanted to do something to help. Simultaneously, the hashtag, #helporhush was trending on Twitter. Burton and Wade decided that they wanted to help the movement that was building, and challenge people to not just support the movement from behind their social media screen names, but to actually do something. On the evening of Wednesday, August 13, 2014, the pair decided to take to social media using the aforementioned hashtag to raise funds to help peaceful protestors by providing them with food and water. Their original goal was to raise $1500, which was received within an hour. By the following morning, $10,000 had been raised, and by the end of the weekend $30,000 had been raised. Starting on August 14, 2014, Burton used the funds that were raised to provide food, water, and supplies for people in Ferguson, and OHOH was created. Within the last year, OHOH has implemented numerous programs to help people in the community. Their programs include Ferguson Food Share, Ferguson for Hire, Ferguson Alternative Spring Break, St. Louis Lunch, Baltimore Lunch, #hashtagbookbag, Ferguson Safe Space, and Transitional Housing Program. OHOH has also initiated Freedom Summer community events in numerous cities across the country, where the community can come together and have a peaceful place to fellowship and eat. Following the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland, people there reached out to OHOH to come support the protestors. Wade accepted the call and traveled there to provide food and water. Because many children in Baltimore were not able to attend school due to the unrest there, many of whom relied on their school lunch as their only meal for the day, OHOH provided lunches to the community. This was the start of the Baltimore Lunch program. This program was also initiated in St. Louis. The Ferguson Food Share provides free groceries to residents in Ferguson. Ferguson for Hire (www. fergusonforhire.org) is a website that links people to employers on an as-needed basis, which can lead to permanent positions. The Ferguson Alternative Spring Break was a 5-week program between midMarch thru mid-April, in which over 160 college students (and three high school students) from all over the country came to Ferguson to participate in beautification and volunteer projects in the community. #hashtagbookbag is a program to collect school supplies for students in the community. For those wanting to get involved or help OHOH, go to www.operationhelporhush.org/donate to donate. People can also help by amplifying the different activities of the organization by retweeting/sharing on social media, or telling friends.

Word on the street. The world looks to the runways at New York Fashion Week for cues on the latest trends to dominate fashion in upcoming seasons. And, we do too. For this shoot, though, we turned to the streets of St. Louis for inspiration. We were particularly drawn to the knack local street style stars have for blending seemingly opposing styles, like sporty with ladylike. We’ve rounded up our favorite looks from the streets

EMPIRE’S RISING STAR: Ta’Rhonda Jones Words by: Oliver Sparton

As graduate from the School of Hard Knocks as well a shining female figure on not just one popular TV series but two, not too bad for a young black girl from the South Side of Chicago. Ta’Rhonda Jones is not only making an impact along her road to success but she’s making a name for herself. She’s establishing herself amongst the elite actresses of this decade. Blink to fast and you may miss this starlet’s rise to the top. Ta’Rhonda Jones has been able to capture our minds and hearts as the flamboyant, edgy, and street smart Portia on Fox’s hip-hop theme drama Empire. With every role she has taken on, she has been able to capture the essence of the character and in a unique way make it her own. Whether it’s the outspoken but real sidekick to Taraji P. Henson’s character Cookie Lyon or the drug addict Aunt, Sherri, on Chicago P.D. However this starlet didn’t always have this amazing life and the thought of acting wasn’t even a mere thought of hers back home in Chicago. Ta’Rhonda describes growing up there had its ups and downs. She is reminded that when she’s back in her hometown. But she says, “With every struggle gains triumph;” reminding us that it’s not where you are in life that matters, it’s where you’ve been. Ta’Rhonda relationship with her mother was on and off due to her mom battling personal issues. It was her grandmother who she says raised her and is the inspiration behind her success and the strength she needed growing up. She says, “My grandmother did so much for me and my other siblings ...She was one who took all eight of us in after we became ward of state and showed us unconditional love. She worked three jobs, came in early in the morning, and made it happen...She’s my superhero.” While attending Simeon Career Academy, which is notable for such stars as Derrick Rose, the late Ben Wilson, and now herself, she decided to take interior design classes and from there she fell in love with the world of fashion. A lot of her style and look from the show comes from her own personal closet. She’s explains, “We were having a hard time finding something that suited me, so Lee [Daniels] told me just bring your own clothes, and from there they love it and said from now on you bring your own wardrobe and do your own make-up.” She jokes about how jealous she was at first seeing others get pampered and styled, but she later took it as a compliment stating that it showed how much they trusted her to see her own vision. It’s the same vision that her costars encourages her to hold on to, especially Taraji. She says, “Whenever I felt like I didn’t know what to do next or wasn’t as ready as everyone else, Taraji reminded me to just do me...She said it’s want they liked about you and what got you here.” In her free time, she’s usually writing music. And with a cosign from producer Timberland, I’m sure we will hear more of work in the future. When asked are there any dream roles out there that she would love to play, she replied, “ I would love to star in an action movie…A super hero role similar to those blockbuster movies Avengers…something like a Angelina Jolie , Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett [Smith] type character all rolled in one..But I think I’m a super hero already [as she jokes].” When asked what’s the biggest misconception about her, she quickly replies, “Most people throw the word “Ghetto” around when describing me, which I didn’t really get upset at first, but the perception is that I’m an uneducated, black , ghetto woman; and that’s not the case at all [She laughs] .” This doesn’t come at much surprise, she has remained loyal to her herself and who she is as a person. It’s the same loyalty that her character Portia portrays to Cookie that makes her such a fan favorite on the show. Loyalty is something that’s very important to her, just as much as the word friend. While many others consider it just a phrase or something we put on our body as a sign of endearment, she thinks otherwise. She believes that loyalty is everything and that if she’s genuinely loyal and honest to you, she expects the same in return. She lives by two words, Be You, Be Yourself. She reminds us that’s it’s okay to be different and have your own individuality. She says it’s what’s missing in this generation. When asked what we can expect from this season of Empire, she says, “Be ready for more fashion, confusion, and betrayal.”

AWARENESS

I AM SHERRI THOMAS

AND I AM A SURVIVOR Words by: Oliver Sparton

S

herri Thomas has persevered through the toughest of times dealing with pituitary cancer to becoming a Trichologist, stylist for the TV show Nellyville, business owner, and most important creating a place where women battling similar hair loss related illnesses can come in uncertain about their appearances and come out blissful, joyful, and emotionally fulfilled — through her realistic looking hair replacement services. Life wasn’t always so reassuring for Thomas. She was diagnosed with pituitary cancer in 2009 and began facing the grim reality that she might not be able to live out the rest of her life. It wasn’t until a near fatal car accident and an embarrassing moment at a bank that she realized her diagnoses wasn’t a curse, it was a blessing in disguise. She says,” I was in so much pain emotionally after hearing the doctor tell me I had cancer that I ended up running into a truck … had I been in another size car it would have been more severe ..But instead the front end of my car ended up under the truck.” As shocking as that experience was along with the chemotherapy, which caused Thomas to lose her hair, she says it wasn’t until a bad experience at a bank that she knew she had to drastic change in order to get her confidence back. She says, “when I started to lose my hair I would wear headscarf’s instead of having to buy wigs, but when I went to this bank one day, the clerk suggested that I remove my ball cap… out of fear I tried whispering I have cancer in hopes

44 September | October 2015 www.DeluxMag.com

of her changing her mind...But she demanded that I remove it.” It was after feeling embarrassed she decided to start making her own wigs. While at the cancer center an older lady, who had liver cancer, inspired Thomas to make her one after she couldn’t believe it was wig because of its lightweight feel and realistic appearance. It was that small gesture and a 2010 article in the Post-Dispatch about her story that would lead to hundreds of other women calling her to ask if she could make her wigs for women with alopecia. She says’ “I was shocked how many women were suffering with hair loss issues through illnesses.” She would go from creating her wigs in the basement of her home to establishing a place where she could service others other women in 2012 called House of Raw Elegance. House of Raw Elegance, which is located at 2955 Patterson Road near Florissant, isn’t just any regular salon; it provides a well tailored service while offering an experience similar to a five-star care center or salon. Through her wigs and hair replacement services she is able to help her customers restore their inner confidence and build upon their beautiful appearance. The process for making her wigs is about 120 hours and with the help of her wig-making machine she worked on with a Boeing engineer that’s awaiting patent approval; she is able to do many things that realistically couldn’t be done by a person alone. She says, “...With the help of my electronic braid less sew in machine I’m able to do way more for women who feel like their hair is too short...the shortest amount of hair

I’ve done is less than one inch.” Thomas also helps customers with the assistance of health insurance companies as well. She provides free consultations and private office setting for all her customers. Thomas’s wigs and hair replacement services can’t be put into words , it’s a realistic appearance and treatment is something I couldn’t believe myself when asked by her associate to see a sample of it and she [associate] knells over to show me . As mentioned earlier seeing her work and services isn’t something that can be put into words, you have to see it with your with your own eyes , and only then will you understand the bliss it gives her customers.

DELUX HEALTH

JAMILA OWENS TODD Naturopathic Doctor

W

hen considering holistic living, there is no single way to do so. This is the beauty of holistic health. It presents plenty of options when considering food choices, herbs, homeopathic medicine, nutritional supplementation, herb-drug-interactions, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, bodywork, essential oils, etc. Out of these many therapies, I have found success with healing hormonal imbalances, metabolic illnesses (high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes), cancer, allergies and immune disorders as well as many different health concerns. The best way of implementing alternative health care is in prevention. Preventing illness can improve overall well-being, increase mental/emotional balance as well as encourage longevity. Health is not simply the absence of disease, but it is the balance of mental, emotional and physical health. The questions of being healthy can be wrapped into three questions: 1. Do I have an equal amount of activity and rest in my day? 2. Do I experience joy/contentment most days? 3. Do I feel comfortable in my body? Vague, yes, but it is a start. When introducing holistic medicine, it is best done with observing daily changes and how we approach those changes. Transitioning from day to night, from work to home, and from sleep to a wake state as well as the greater transitions from day to day, season to season and year to year. It is in these changes, were we may notice our physical, mental and emotional health the most. Does your mood change once you arrive at work or when approaching winter? Do you experience pain with weather changes or as the day progresses? Do you wake with congestion or discomfort? Are you providing enough time for rest, exercise and meal preparation? These changes are an indicator of how your body copes or recovers. A slow recovery or an inability to cope, suggests that your system is sluggish and what exactly does that mean? There may be a slow metabolism, hormonal imbalances, an overwhelmed immune system or chronic inflammation. If you are unsure as to what exactly you need to focus on, pick one area and start there. How do I get started? Lets take the next major seasonal transition Fall. The autumn equinox brings a great transition in our earth and environment. The palette of nature is intensified, the weather is cooler and the variety of plants change. For many, this is a great time. For others, this change stirs up health issues, most commonly, allergies and immune system challenges. I believe that nature provides us with answers and if we look closely, we can find many of our solutions. A great example would be an apple. The season where apples naturally grow is in the fall and the medicine of an apple can help with reducing seasonal allergy symptoms. Apples contain a bioflavonoid call quercitin (pronounced kwer-SE-tin). Quercitin actually helps the body’s natural allergy response and does so by decreasing the immune system’s over-reaction to allergens. An apple each day is great, but sometimes you will need a high dose of this quercitin and that is achieved through supplementation.

Another nature healer was noted in a scientific study1 that reviewed walking outdoors and its action on our brain chemistry. The combination of physical activity with the backdrop of trees and images of nature can enhance the chemicals in the brain and promote memory and cognitive function. This is an example of embracing the transition of seasons and using nature as a healer. Our only constant in life is change and the better we manage these changes, the more we can adapt to life’s many transitions. Holistic health is about being open to the many options and changes as well as listening to your inner healer. As you move closer to the healthier you, please know that this can look different each day. Be open and be aware and be well. Happy Healing! “Place, precision and time. The three great axes of Martell craftsmanship; an expertise and emotion passed from hand to hand since 1715.”

REDEFINED TASTE: THE COGNAC SYMBOLISING FRENCH REFINEMENT, MARTELL IS THE WORLD’S NO.1 XO (EXTRA OLD) COGNAC. THE OLDEST COGNAC HOUSE, MARTELL HAS DEVELOPED A UNIQUE KNOW-HOW FOR CREATING TRULY OUTSTANDING COGNACS.

I

n the darkness and silence of the Martell cellars, the eaux-de-vie gently slumber. Days, months, years pass. Sleepy-eyed and lazy, time rolls on.

But a beautiful transformation is taking place inside the oak barrels. As a living material, the oak wood provides the eau-de-vie with its structure and handsome amber colour. Indeed, it is the wood that helps the eau-de-vie develop the last stage of its aromatic personality. Martell has always opted exclusively for barrels made of soft, fine-grain oak - its special feature being that it transmits soft, well-balanced aromas to the cognac eaux-de-vie, lending them notes of vanilla, dried fruit, red fruit, chutney and dried flowers. The oak wood used for Martell barrels comes from trees of the Tronçais style. This means that the oaks are planted closer together, leaving less light for each sapling and slowing their growth rate. The result is fine grain oak wood, called so since the rings representing growth are more compact. Barrels made from this type of wood give the eaux-de-vie aged within them a lighter and more delicate woody taste. “When transferred to the oak barrels, the eaux-de-vie are completely colourless. Only through contact with the rich oak do they take on their amber hue.” Along with the choice of wood, the type of barrel used also greatly affects the flavour of the eaux-de-vie. If made with completely new wood, barrels impart a strong wood taste, whereas Wbarrels that have previously held eau-de-vie, give a much subtler flavour. A final, major taste element is ‘toasting’ - a process where the inside of the barrels are gently burnt to help release the complex flavours within the oak. This affects the wood taste - the more they are burnt, the more prominent the wood flavour. At Martell the barrels are lightly toasted to preserve the flavour of the eaux-de-vie.

very year non for profit organizations get a boost of donations the last few months. Donations seem to start pouring in around Thanksgiving as most of us reflect on how much we have and how much we are grateful for, we want to give back and share with others. During the holiday season we are nicer and more generous. We like doing a good thing and we feel good about doing it. But if you stop and think about all of the charities and all that they really need, wouldn’t it benefit them more if we could give throughout the year? With bills and obligations sometimes giving is just not feasible, so another way to get involved is to purchase items from companies that give back. One of my favorite items that gives back is wine, lots of producers champion a cause or have a foundation of their own. So why not buy your next bottle and make a difference? When you’re at the grocery and looking at all the labels, it’s difficult to know which wines give to what causes, here are just a few to help you in your selection. An easy one to remember is Newman’s Own. Paul Newman not only makes salad dressing but wine too. He donates all of the profits from every bottle of Chardonnay, Merlot or Pinot Noir to charities around the world through his Newman’s Own Foundation. One of his favorite charities, is his Hole in the Wall camp for seriously ill children. It’s dedicated to having children with serious medical conditions experience fun and be with other kids so they can forget their troubles for a short amount of time. Sometimes smiles and laughter can be the best medicine. Homefront Red is a red blend option from Murphy Goode. For every bottle sold, 50 cents goes toward helping veterans and active duty wounded soldiers that have emergency financial

or other needs through an organization called Operation Homefront. One of their programs is called Wounded Warriors. This helps disabled soldiers as they return home from active duty. A lot of them need assistance transitioning to everyday life and Operation Homefront helps to make this happen. Patriotic Pour is a cabernet based blend that was created for a charity auction after the tragic events occurred in New York on 9-11. Sherwin Family Vineyards was asked to participate to raise money for the victim’s families. They decided to create a special bottle with the American Flag and the words “In God We Trust” and “United We Stand” etched on each side. Sherwin is the only American Winery that has Federal approval to use the Flag. Patriotic Pour touched the hearts of everyone at the winery even after the event was completed. Each year a limited number of these bottles are produced with 100% of the proceeds going to families in need. Can you imagine planting enough trees to cover Chicago’s Millennium Park 400 times or New York’s Central Park 22 times? Trinchero Family Estates Wines had this vision and has made it come true. Through their brand Trinity Oaks, one tree is planted for every bottle of wine sold. In a partnership with Trees for the Future, trees are planted globally to help manage CO2 and protect eroding landscape. Being a steward of our land and dedicated to protecting the earth they have surpassed 12 million trees since 2008. Trinity Oaks produces a nice range of wines including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cab. In 2008, Carol Waldorf Lohr, wife of Jerry Lohr, passed away very unexpectedly from breast cancer complications. As a tribute to her memory,

J. Lohr Vineyard and Wines made a commitment to helping others with early detection. When you purchase a bottle of J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet or Sauvignon Blanc, $2 will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This Foundation provides free mammograms to all women in need. J. Lohr has sponsored 4,000 mammograms to date, helping early detection and making a difference. Next time you are wanting a nice sparkling wine, why not try Iron Horse Vineyards, Ocean Reserve Blanc de Blanc. This limited edition wine donates $4 dollars per bottle to the National Geographic Ocean Initiative. The oceans cover over 70% of our planet. Oceans help regulate climates, sustain numerous marine species and provide us with food. Keeping our oceans healthy keeps our planet healthy. A lot of us have had someone in our family or someone we know suffer from a heart attack. Ehlers Estate wines out of St. Helena California gives all of its proceeds to supporting cross border research to combat cardiovascular disease. Ehlers Estates wines include Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. And last but certainly not least is One Hope Wine. Co-founder Jake Kloberdanz has partnered with winemaker Rob Mondavi Jr to create a wine company where 50% of all profits are donated to different charities. Each varietal champions a different cause. For example, the Sauvignon Blanc supports Save Our Planet efforts and the Cabernet, helps children with Autism. Each charity is clearly stated on the label so you know what you are supporting. What a great organization, every bottle does indeed make a difference!

I AM LEGEND M C

LY T E Words By: Dewarren Smith

N

ever in the history of music has there ever been an artist like MC Lyte. Growing up in an era where MTV and BET played videos she appeared on our television and would be to me the equivalent of a modern day Michelle Obama. Smart, beautiful, very sure of herself, of course, there were other female emcees in this era of hip hop or rap music but none of them shined like MC Lyte. Over the years we have seen MC Lyte expand in many ways radio, voiceovers, TV host, and even spinning records all the while dropping quality music. She has 8 studio albums to her credit. The most recent album being a special vinyl only release, entitled, Legend. Instead of focusing on the hip hop pioneer, the Grammy nominated artist, the first female to have a RIAA Certified Gold Record, BET “I Am Hip Hop” Award winner, or the Lifetime Achievement recipient artist side I will show restraint – those things are just a part of her greatness.

men in areas they have an interest and putting them in front of men actually doing what they are looking to do in the their futures.” She went on to tell me that the initiative also focuses on cultural education; how to speak to and protect women. Reaching back to her past and the “Self Destruction” record I asked if the foundation had a response to the recent plight of young black men in places such as Ferguson, NYC, Baltimore and elsewhere. “The way that we have chosen to address it is through education. There are many organizations that are taking it head on in terms of black on black crime and all of the events you just mentioned. We felt to put concentration on educating our men was the best way that we could immediately serve the community”. She went on to say, “through education you give a person options and reasons to live and gain respect. Education gives you the ability to communicate when there is chaos and violence“.

Nowadays, MC Lyte is the CEO of Sunni Gyrl Entertainment Company a full service entertainment management and production firm. Conceived in 1997 (For Lyte fans this would be the year following her fifth studio album, Bad As I Wanna Be, with hit singles “Keep On Keepin On” ft. Xscape and “Cold Rock a Party” ft. Missy Elliot) Sunni Gyrl provides executive leadership and customized strategies in the areas of celebrity/ artist support, development and management; brand development and management; wealth maintenance, community affairs and outreach, and production/creative services according to their website. With more than a couple TV productions in the works, her days are filled with meetings. She was leaving one and going to another when we spoke. “When I was an artist I could just get up whenever I wanted and just create and now I have to take into consideration we have production that needs to be developed and employees that need to be lead,” says Lyte. She handles it all with extreme poise. The pressure of managing a record release and keeping all the other balls in the air takes a special person. In the next year Lyte hopes to have her productions on air, and as she says it, “putting people to work“.

As we were nearing the end of our time together I asked about Feminism; if in her sphere of influence if it has begun to make a comeback. I explained that lately I have been running across young sisters that have begun to embrace the struggle. She was unsure of how to answer the question but said, “I do know as a woman it is extremely difficult in this business as it is in many businesses. “ I asked her if it was getting any easier. “I think the belief in being able to be successful has become easier because we have seen people do it, we’ve seen Cathy Hughes, Debra Lee, and Sylvia Rhone…young women can look and say, oh okay she did it, I can too”. With our time coming to a close, I asked Lyte, out of all the accolades and achievements which one means the most? MC Lyte said the fact that she can still walk through the hood and that she has been true to what it is she believes, hasn’t sold her people out, and that she is still welcomed wherever she decides to be or go means the most.

If heading up her own entertainment company was not enough, MC Lyte’s Non Profit Foundation Hip Hop Sisters Network has created tremendous opportunities for many youth. “We have significantly been able to change people’s lives“, she tells me. “We are all about the empowering of young girls and young women be it through inspiration and education”. President and CEO of Hip Hop Sisters Network, Lynn Richardson, who Lyte describes as a financial expert, served as COO of a Russell Simmons Foundation which also focused on financial literacy has brought her expertise to the foundation. We have programs like Women, Wealth, and Relationships where we discuss finances and educate on financial literacy. The Foundation and Lyte herself is supported by throngs of celebrities and A-Listers. Lyte’s ability to raise money and speak using her unique voice is highly sought and respected. Through Hip Hop Sisters Network $400,000 dollars in scholarships have been awarded to students in 2012 and 2013 at the University of Wisconsin -Madison. In 2014 three $50,000 scholarships were awarded to Dillard University male students under Hip Hop Sisters Network’s now signature initiative #EducateOurMen. She tells me that #EducateOurMen is “not only about furthering education but providing mentorship for young

Conversations like this are all too rare in Hip Hop yet she does not bash the industry or current artists. Lyte is content with the bright light moment she received watching her effect on fans and the impact hip hop has had on the world and believes that every artist must experience their own awakening. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY before rap got a hold of her, she wanted to work in radio, she wanted to be on TV, she wanted to be a teacher and use her voice. “I’m doing all the things that I had a desire to do prior to Hip Hop, but I think Hip Hop was a vehicle where I could live out all of those means”. Overall her purpose in life is clear which is to make people feel inspired by her presence and her works. Whether it is through her pioneering role in hip hop and music overall, philanthropy, or in business to MC Lyte it is all a part of who she is and she works hard to make each one shine. It was Aristotle who philosophized, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” and that is MC Lyte. What’s being accomplishing through her artistry, business ventures, and philanthropy will leave a lasting legacy for all to behold and a blueprint for others to follow, she is Legend.

estled in the historic French neighborhood of Soulard in St. Louis, Missouri lies a new restaurant that blends casual and fine dining all under one roof. Fleur de Lilies has been making waves since it opened several weeks ago with its first and one of a kind Creole and Asian Cuisine fusion concept. They managed to turn the place that once occupied Sage Urban American Grill and Lynch Street Bistro into a stylish and beautiful environment that will make you think you’re outside of Missouri. Upon entering the restaurant you get a subtle but elegant view of the first floor that showcases a dark oak wood finished room with a hit purple décor. The area also sits well over 100 guests as well as highlights the bar, which serves everything from your favorite wines, cocktails, or draft choices. Once you past that area, you can either dine outside on the second floor, where the hidden desk gives you a great view of the outside area as well as creates a romantic or private dining experience for yourself, friends, or colleagues. When you’ve made it to your area of choice, you have a selection that stands out amongst the rest of them and is bar far the best selection that one place can offer you. The Creole and Asian Cuisine fusion concept at Fleur de Lilies offers its customers a wide variety of cuisines ranging from Bibimbap Bowl, Stuffed Mirliton Fusion Tacos, Jambalaya, Gumbo with a unique addition of turkey sausage instead of pork , and FDL Signature Shrimp Etoufee with rice and their famous cornbread. They also offer a weekend brunch that fusions both styles with choices like Eggs Sardou, Crawfish Omelets, duck confit and bananas-foster French toast. Behind this fabulous restaurant is the fusion partnership of Misha K. Sampson and co-owner and business partner Alexis “Lina” Kim. Misha, who is from Mobile, Alabama, brings that Cajun and Creole culture to the restaurant; While Alexis, whose family is Korean, brings out the Korean and Asian aspects to the menu. Both parties, with the help of former Bar Les Freres’s Chef Michael Gipson, are able to share a lot of their 100 year old family recipes and cultural tastes for us to enjoy. Misha and Lina’s friendship started years ago during a conversation at BBC Cafe & Bar, which Lina has owned for several years now. The pair decided they wanted to offer something that was new and unique but brought together their traditional

and cultural tastes in food. Lina states that Misha brings to the restaurant her marketing experience, high energy, and enjoyable social skills to the table, while Misha states Lina brings to the table her knowledge of owning several restaurants and choices in food selection. Misha says, “…We wanted to be able to offer our customers “The Fleur de Lilies experience”, whether it’s from the unique look or feel of the place, the food, or the bar that specializes in whiskey and import beers.” Misha also says we have had a lot of customers that have been here every day since we’ve opened. She says, “One customer said I love the fact that every time I come here I don’t get bored with the selection...I have a different experience with every meal.” They say they offer a lot of their success to the friendly and loving area of Soulard that has been more than caring and helpful along the way.

THE TREND OF BOOZY ICE CREAM IS SWEEPING ST. LOUIS

Ever since the ice cream cone was introduced and popularized at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, it has been a dessert that Americans have come to enjoy. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the average American consumes almost 22 pounds of ice cream per year. With ice cream parlors constantly aiming to remain competitive and to appeal to customer’s changing tastes, trends in ice cream flavors are always evolving. One trend recently sweeping the nation has been alcohol-infused flavors to create a mature twist to the playful dessert. Of course St. Louis has joined this boozy ice cream movement with the emergence of several ice cream parlors throughout the city that have created flavor options to appeal to customers seeking to have a more naughty cone. Two ice cream parlors in particular who offer a wide variety of boozy ice cream flavors are The Fountain on Locust and Ices Plain & Fancy. Here is a look at these two fabulous ice cream parlors and the flavors that have the over-21 crowd wanting more!

THE FOUNTAIN ON LOCUST

On February 19, 2008, Joy Grdnic Christensen opened the doors of her restaurant, The Fountain on Locust (TFOL). Christensen originally had the vision of TFOL as being an adult ice cream parlor. Christensen says that her philosophy for TFOL was based on these three principles: a restaurant with beautiful atmosphere, high quality food, and low prices. “Everyone said that you can only do two of those things, but I said ‘why not do all three,’” said Christensen. It’s safe to say that the owner has accomplished that challenge in that TFOL features a wide variety of affordable desserts, entrees, soups made-from-scratch, a full bar, and hand-painted wall-to-wall murals that Christensen painted herself. TFOL features numerous menu options for guests seeking a boozy dessert. Their options include Signature Ice Cream Martinis, Adult Ice Cream Sauces, Adult Floats, and “pour-over” options. Often considered to be “the home of ice cream martinis”, TFOL features 25 signature ice cream martinis, including best-seller, the Grand Chocolate which features chocolate vodka, Godiva Chocolate liqueur, and Zanzibar Chocolate ice cream. TFOL’s Adult Ice Cream Sauces include four fruit sauces made with fine liquor over aged ice cream. The Banana Bourbon is the restaurant’s bestselling Adult Ice Cream Sauce, and consists of

a brown sugar bourbon sauce over caramelized bananas and vanilla ice cream. The Adult Floats are a different take on root beer floats and feature two beer floats, and three champagne floats including the most popular adult float, the White Peach Bellini Float, which has real peaches in it! In that TFOL has a full bar, guests can also request a “pour-over” on any of dessert in which a shot of liquor is literally poured over the dessert! Guests can receive suggestions from the bartending staff for what dessert flavors and liquors pair well together. Every year on the second Sunday of September, TFOL hosts a huge event called the “Scooperbowl Ice Cream Soda Jerk Off”. At this annual event, the restaurant’s soda jerks compete in a series of fun events, including a blindfolded competition, in hopes of receiving “the golden scoop” trophy. The event is free to the public and all guests receive free ice cream. You don’t want to miss it! TFOL features delicious desserts and ice cream flavors for children and those not seeking alcoholic options as well. The Fountain on Locust is located at 3037 Locust St., Saint Louis, Missouri.

ICES PLAIN & FANCY

Ices Plain & Fancy (IPAF) blasted on the

scene on July 20, 2014 on National Ice Cream Day, and was co-founded by brother and sister, Max and Darla Crask, Troika Brodsky, and Matt Deutschmann. IPAF is not your average ice cream parlor in that it features made-to-order “Nitro Ices”, ice cream using liquid nitrogen. As customers wait for their delicious ice cream, they also receive a show due to the changing colors and smoke coming from the stand mixers that are churning the individual servings of ice cream. When asked why liquid nitrogen ice cream, Co-owner Darla Crask said “two reasons – one, no one had it here in St. Louis yet, and two, it’s the best way to make ice cream.” She went on to elaborate that by using liquid nitrogen, “there is less air which makes a more silky, dense ice cream.” IPAF currently offers guests a menu of nine “Boozy Ices”, two boozy floats, and one alcoholinfused sorbet. Any of the Boozy Ices can be made with soy for guests who want a non-dairy option. Certain flavors are seasonal, but most have been permanently added to the menu. The best-selling boozy flavor is Frozen Dude, which Darla described as a White Russian in the form of ice cream. IPAF also is proud to have collaborations with many local vendors and breweries, and offers something for the whole family, even the family dog! Ices Plain & Fancy is located at 2256 S. 39th St. in St. Louis, Missouri. DELUX MAGAZINE

utumn brings many things to mind, such as the leaves changing colors and changing temperatures among other things. For many though, the most important thing of this season is Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival and is held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany annually.

Cities throughout the world host their own Oktoberfest events to celebrate the occasion, including St. Louis. Needless to say, beer is a must-have for the event. Although attention is given to major beer brands during this time, smaller local brewers are garnering just as much attention. This is especially true with so many microbreweries and craft brewers producing beer right here in St. Louis. Over the past few years, microbreweries and craft brewers have made a major impact in the beer industry. When asked what has possibly caused this increase in popularity among consumers, Jon Shine, the Head of Sales for Urban Chestnut, said “people used to drink one type of beer, this generation prefers choices.” Millennials are proving to the beer industry that they appreciate quality, yet also enjoy the variety and creativity that is produced by microbreweries and craft brewers. Two of the most prominent local brewers in this category are Schlafly and Urban Chestnut. Here is an inside look at these two breweries, and why their beer would be a good addition to your Oktoberfest festivities.

SCHLAFLY

The St. Louis Brewery Inc. is the company behind the beer brand Schlafly, which was founded by Tom Schlafly and Dan Kopman. In December of 1991, The Schlafly Tap Room opened its doors in downtown St. Louis. The brewery went on to open its Schlafly Bottleworks location in Maplewood in March of 2004. Both locations offer a great selection of food and stellar variety of beer, as well as free guided tours of the brewery for visitors. The staff at each location are very knowledgeable about the menu and are pleased to offer their expertise to guests who need advice on pairing their food with Schlafly beer. In terms of the brand’s beverage variety, over 70 styles of Schlafly beer are produced every year. Schlafly offers a wide variety of year-round flavors as well as seasonal styles. Schlafly’s best-selling beers include its flagship Pale Ale, Kölsch, Pumpkin, and its IPA series, the American IPA (AIPA) and Tasmanian IPA (TIPA). In an interview with the company’s Ambassador Brewer, Stephen Hale said of the brand’s variety, “we offer something for everybody and we’re committed to quality.” Hale went on to say, “we put a huge amount of effort and time into the beer.”

Last year Schlafly produced approximately 60,000 barrels of beer. Currently all of Schlafly beer styles are distributed throughout Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and select styles are distributed in Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. When asked what sets Schlafly beer apart from the rest, Hale, who has been with the company since 1991, said “we have a huge variety of styles, two locations that are quite different but each offer high quality experiences when you walk in the door, which carries on when you buy our beer in the markets.” Hale also said, “we guarantee a quality beer wherever it’s bought, whether draft, bottle, or can.” On September 19, 2015, The Schlafly Tap Room will host its 17th annual Hop in the City Beer Festival, where guests can enjoy great food, live music, and unlimited samples of over 40 Schlafly beer styles. For ticket information please visit the website, www.Schlafly.com. Also Schlafly beer will proudly be served at numerous Oktoberfest events throughout the St. Louis area this fall. The Schlafly Tap Room is located at 2100 Locust St., in St. Louis, Missouri, and Schlafly Bottleworks is located at 7260 Southwest Ave., in Maplewood, Missouri.

URBAN CHESTNUT

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company is the brainchild of co-founders David Wolfe and German-born and experienced Brewmaster Florian Kuplent, and opened in January of 2011. In 2014, the company produced 12,000 barrels of beer, and projects an increase in 2015. Urban Chestnut’s brand philosophy is described as “Beer Divergency”, which involves two personalities of the brand: Revolution (Urban), which is more modern, and Reverence (Chestnut), which is more traditional. Jon Shine, the company’s Head of Sales described the brand’s message as “paying homage and giving due respect to old-world styles while experimenting and continuing to push craft beer forward.” He went on to define Beer Divergency as “celebrating the old while embracing the new.” This philosophy is carried out through the brand’s beers, in that there is a Revolution Series of beer and a Reverence Series of beer. The brand’s best-sellers are its flagship, Zwickel which is a Bavarian lager, and the Schnickelfritz, an unfiltered Bavarian Wheat beer. Urban Chestnut is also known for its collaborations. Recently the brand worked with Kaldi’s Coffee to produce a Sertaozinho Weiss beer, which used the Brazilian coffee bean, Sertaozinho. Other collaborations include Moonlight Mead, and even a partnership with local Bavarian-style sausage company, G&W Meat. Urban Chestnut operates with two locations, a Midtown Brewery & Biergarten and the Grove Brewery & Bierhall. Both locations create a uniquely different experience for guests, in that the Bierhall represents the “Revolution” part of the company’s philosophy, while the Biergarten reflects the brewery’s “Reverence” side of the brand. The Bierhall features a more industrial, modern atmosphere, while the Biergarten features an outdoor, old-world Bavarian feel. Both locations feature a different menu exclusive to that specific location that further supports the theme of each location. Urban Chestnut has some exciting upcoming events including a 3-day Oktoberfest, being held September 25th thru 27th, 2015 at the Biergarten. Just before Oktoberfest, the company will release its largest seasonal beer, Oachkatzlschwoaf. For more information about upcoming events at Urban Chestnut, please visit www. urbanchestnut.com. The Midtown Brewery & Biergarten is located at 3229 Washington Avenue, in St. Louis, Missouri. The Grove Brewery & Bierhall is located at 4465 Manchester Avenue, in St. Louis, Missouri.

aaron donald: rams defensive tackle

As a star athlete at the University of Pittsburgh, Donald was drafted following his senior year in the 1st round by the Rams. He immediately understood the obstacles professional athletes overcome at the start of what many hope to be a long, successful career—training tirelessly to prepare for his rookie season with the Rams organization. “All I did was work. You never know what to expect or what it’s going to be like until you actually go out there and play. I got myself ready by staying in the weight room and conditioning myself top notch.” Donald added, “When I got here, I was just learning the playbook and getting mentally ready for what was about to happen. I just worked my butt off.” After a record-setting rookie year, Donald tested his entrepreneurial acuity and opened AD’s Pittsburgh Café on the Pitt campus in January. The space where AD’s

is located once housed the Pittsburgh Café which served as a social spot for countless classes of students prior to its closing in 2012. The resurgence of a popular hangout was a dream of Donald’s since he was a student, and has been embraced by everyone—from the campus to the community. “It’s actually something I used to always say back in college. I would always say, ‘If I had this bar…’ or ‘I’ll come back and buy this bar and I’m going to do it this way.’ But at the time you’re just talking.” Donald continued, “The opportunity presented itself. My brother was in the business for a couple years, so he knew how to run the business and handle the business aspect. He’s still teaching me the business part as well. We sat down and talked to some people and everything looked good. “It was something great to bring back to the Pitt campus. Being there, I know we didn’t have too many bars to go to and we were getting tired of the same old bars. We just want to bring a new feel—something new to the campus. It helps the kids a lot. At the same time, it’s something me and my brother talked about as well.” Beyond the business, Donald always finds time for his family and consciously connecting with the community. Featured with his teammates, defensive ends, Chris

Long and Robert Quinn, Donald was tapped as a face for the Diversity Awareness Partnership poster campaign. The campaign was to promote diversity during a climactic clash between the cops and the citizens of St. Louis and its surrounding cities. “I grew up in areas that aren’t the best, so I know how things go. The same way when I’m in St. Louis and when I’m back in Pittsburgh: I want to do things for the community, do things for people, and even talk to kids and let them know that things are possible. “We all did things we weren’t supposed to do in life, but I’m just trying to be that positive role model to help kids and help people. I want to try to give them hope and whatever we can do to help somebody achieve their goals.” On and off the field, Aaron Donald is making a difference. His ambitions are attainable. “Hopefully one day I’ll continue to grow as a great father, a great football player, and a great business man—only time will tell.”

Devon Moody-Graham WITH OVER 1000 YOUTH EXPOSED TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP, 100 SMALL BUSINESS CREATED THROUGH HER PROGRAMS AND A PARTNERSHIP WITH SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY IN THE WORKS, DEVON MOODY-GRAHAM IS GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO TURN YOUR PASSION INTO A PAYCHECK.

Youth In Biz is a non for profit organization that first started as a dream and a mission. Its mission is help kids and young adults create their own business based on their passions. She states that the idea came about from her guest speaking at career fairs, various schools, and discussing entrepreneurship with local teens. So in April 2013, with help from local organizations and community partners, her vision was formed and brought to life. Although there were programs out there like hers, she states that many of those hadn’t hit the St. Louis and East Saint Louis areas yet. A key part in knowing that she choose the right career path was her impact on several students she helped reached their dreams. Let’s take for example 8 year old Carre who established “Carre’s Duct Tape”. She was a vendor at one of her workshops and also honored by her at one of her events last year. Just like Devon, Carre’s mother helped her pursue her dreams and achieve something she could call her own. Jaylen Bledsoe, founder of Bledsoe Technologies, whom Devon met as a teen, also was someone who Devon inspired to

follow his dreams and create a business for himself, which according to her, he has been doing for several years now and so far accomplished so much in a short timeframe. Devon’s inspiration when it comes to entrepreneurship is said to be credited towards her parents. Devon’s father has been in the shoe repair business for over 50 years and her mother has been involve n her own catering, cosmetology , and carpentry business since she was little. She credits them for inspiring her to not only pursue her dreams but show others youths that you can be their own business or entity. However, it wasn’t until she met Ray Hill, founder of Hill Brewing Company, that he encourage her to start consulting full time and providing lectures and seminars on entrepreneurship. She took his knowledge and expertise and lives by her motto “Turning your passion into paycheck” and how it can be rewarding and promising, no matter your age. Along with Youth in Biz, she has other small

companies such as a consulting firm and a social painting company called Deco Noir, which means Black Art. Deco Noir uses local painters and high school students as the event planners. She says this gives them a chance to learn certain skills and deal with others on a professional level as well as network with other important key business figures in St. Louis. When asked where she sees Youth in Biz and her career in ten years she hopes to have a full curriculum and establishing entrepreneurship programs in school districts around the country. She also wants to open a Center of Entrepreneurship named after her late grandmother, Vetser M. Suggs Smith. When ask what advice she can offer young adults, she gives a hard but easy task for all, which is write the vision, make it plain.
