ST LOUIS -- How could Delux get even better you might ask? Well how about getting the King himself Mr Big Ron Isley to sit down with us and share some words of wisdom. This I would have to say was one of the most exciting shoots of the magazine. Its nothing like hanging out in the Ritz Carlton hanging out with the King of Baby Makin Music!!! lol.... But anyway shouts out to our new videographers Video Vault. They are capturing all these crazy behind the scenes momments that stills can catch. Oh, lastly... My bad Guanin Jones... We all know you did the makeup for Epiphany Last issue... I owe you one! September is here and so is DELUX. And if you havent heard Nov 1. DELUX ATLANTA. Here we grow again. Thanks St. Louis.

“I GET AROUND” - TUPAC 1993
TUPAC AMARU SHAKUR (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996)
It’s been close to 15 years since his passing and honestly, it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago. Tupac provided the blueprint on “‘How to be a Successful “Gangsta” Rapper’ that many MCs and rappers still mimic. Nine times out of ten your favorite rapper is imitating the great Tupac Shakur – knowingly or unknowingly. Jadakiss said …”your favorite rappers favorite rapper is more than likely Tupac.” Let’s be real. If Tupac hadn’t had died a lot of rappers today would be working at Jiffy Lube. Tupac was misogynistic, a rebel, a Black Nationalist, a thug, and schizophrenic poet. You know the funny thing about the rappers today? They’ve taken on all the negative qualities of Tupac, without any discourse or balance within their message. Tupac was the spawning of a black nationalistic and pimp background (which made him the conflicted figure he was). Tupac was balanced person with hood credentials, but also a library card. I really doubt many MCs try to balance their “Ni**a Nature” with a conscious nature.
Tupac was a flawed man, and all his songs weren’t poignant like “Keep Your Head Up” or “So Much Pain”. No one can deny that besides Boogie Down Productions “The Bridge is Over” that Tupac’s ”Hit’Em Up” is not one of the best diss songs in hip hop history. At the pinnacle of Tupac’s hip hop career he was able to win Grammys, make platinum albums, and act in Tony nominated roles. His accolades go on and on. Tupac was able to tell the story of the ghetto youth while also showing the world how the ghetto youth felt. Words by Darryl Frierson

DELUXEXTRAS Ernest “Ernie” Isley (born on March 7, 1952) is a member of the American family musical ensemble, The Isley Brothers. First serving as a drummer, Isley moved to be a bassist, guitarist and songwriter. Career Isley was reared in Cincinnati, where his older brothers formed The Isley Brothers, first as a gospel group, then as a secularsinging group, until 1960 when he and his family moved to Englewood, New Jersey. After befriending Jimi Hendrix, who was one of the touring guitarists for his brothers and lived at the Isleys’ home for several years, and after being influenced by Jose Feliciano’s version of The Doors’ “Light My Fire”, Isley trained himself to
be a guitarist. His first live gig as a member of his brothers’ band, at age 14, was as a drummer in 1966; two years later he did his first professional recording, playing bass on the Isleys’ breakthrough funk smash, “It’s Your Thing”, released in 1969. He got his first guitar in October, 1968. He played electric and acoustic guitar, and drums in the group’s early 1970s albums, Get Into Something, Givin’ It Back and Brother, Brother, Brother, before fully joining the Isley Brothers fold in 1973, becoming a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist playing both acoustic and electric guitar, drums and percussion. BLACK & BEAUTIFUL SKIN WEDDING PICTURES HOLD SOME OF THE HAPPIEST MEMORIES OF A LIFETIME, SO BE SURE YOU CONSIDER ALL THE ANGLES WHEN PREPARING TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED ON THE BIG DAY. Exfoliate and moisturize- Don’t forget that the most important step is good skincare for a clean, smooth base. Soft, supple skin will be the best canvas for any makeup to look great on. Don’t go changing- Brides shouldn’t try new skincare products, or anything that may irritate skin during the wedding countdown. Don’t be tempted to get cosmetic or skin treatments too close to the date, especially if you haven’t experienced the procedure before.
Skip the glitter- Radiance-enhancing or shimmery foundations make faces look too slick and shiny for photos, so if you must, keep the sheen only on cheekbones and the cupid’s bow for highlighting purposes. Always finish the t-zone with powder, and and blot any oiliness as needed. The older you are, the more important it is to avoid shimmery eye makeup, as it tends to bring attention to fine lines.
Build from a solid foundation- Be sure that your foundation is the right color and formulation for your skin. Color correcting concealers, like lilac for any sallow areas, and peach/yellow for under eye circles are a much better choice than simply layering on more makeup.
Define eyes and brows- While It’s important to line and define eyes so they pop in photos, keep in mind that dark shadow will make eyes recede and look smaller. For big bright eyes, highlight the inner corners and brow bone with light pink or pale gold shadow or crayon. Also, make sure brows are properly framing the face- everyone looks better and younger with defined brows. Fill the arches with powder or a solid pigment and brush. DELUX-MAG.COM SEPTEMBER 2011 | 27
INTRODUCING MR & MRS SAM & GLORIA TIBBS AUGUST 05 2011

RONALD ISLEY
Mr. BIGGS
Words by Tiffany S. Nashville Photography: Lawrence Bryant
R
onald Isley’s career dates back over fifty years. According to Billboard Magazine, the Isleys first appeared on the Billboard charts with Twist and Shout. It was #2 on the R & B chart (and #17 on the Billboard Hot 100). Since that time, whether with his brothers or on his own, Isley has had a consistent presence on Billboard’s charts; and not just for R & B hits. In 1996, Floatin’ on Your Love peaked at #22 for “hot dance music/maxi-singles”. People of Today and Who Loves You Better were #2 and #3 on the “disco singles” in 1976.
34 | DELUX Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011
The soulful, funky, and at times rock n’ roll feel of music from the Isley’s has been a hit no matter which genre you try to put it in. With only two Grammy nods under his belt, the fans have proven they love the music put forth by the Isley’s regardless what the Grammypowers-that-be may say. Posts on his Facebook fan page range from “they don’t make singers like you anymore” to “[you’re a] music virtuoso.” Young and old alike sway with dance partners and sing like there’s no tomorrow when a cut featuring Ronald Isley comes on. Last July, his ability to appeal to the masses allowed him to perform in Washington, D.C., along with Fantasia, at the National Urban League 100th
he’s just daddy to his son; and the expectations are high! When enjoying time alone Ronald does normal everyday things. “I enjoy swimming. And when I had a farm, I would fish a lot. We also spend a lot of time in California.”
Who is Ron Isley?
Ronald Isley was born on May 21, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His love of music was encouraged at early age, by his father, a professional vocalist, and his mother, a church pianist who also provided musical accompaniment for him and his brothers at their early performances.
Acting credits
Ron Isley made several appearances on The Steve Harvey Show and the Jamie Foxx Show in the late 90s to early 2000s.
Anniversary gala, honoring First Lady Michelle Obama and Congressman Charles Rangel (D., NY), president of the Urban League. His relationship with God and family deeply impacts his music. With his wife’s father being a minister, “it’s a natural thing” for him to have a spiritual relationship with his family. He’s able to laugh a lot with his wife and states, “God has really blessed us. My wife inspires me to write though I’ve been doing it all my life.” Ronald married Kandy Johnson in 2005. She too is working on her album and has written a lot of songs in preparation for it. Together, they have 4-yearold son who Ronald says is his everything. The young son keeps this music veteran busy. Ronald tag teams with his wife to keep his son active. “He wants to go to the movies one day, Disneyland the next, Six Flags and Dave and Busters another day…” He may be a celebrity in our eyes, but
As the third of six brothers, being a family man was destined to be a way of life for Ronald Isley. His brother is his tour mate on the Superstars of Soul concert lineup and they’re currently touring the country. What’s the scoop on Ernie Isley, the younger music lovers may ask? Well he had his first live gig as a member of his brothers’ band, at age 14 as a drummer. He later did his first professional recording, playing bass on the Isleys’ breakthrough funk smash, It’s Your Thing, released in 1969. He played electric and acoustic guitar, and drums in the group’s early 1970s albums, Get Into Something, Givin’ It Back and Brother, Brother, Brother, before fully joining the Isley Brothers fold in 1973, becoming a songwriter, and multiinstrumentalist. It’s great to see them keep it in the family! Ronald Isley’s 2010 release, Mr. I was executive produced by Ronald Isley and Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid. Guest appearances include T.I., on the track Put Your Money On Me, and the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin, on the album’s climactic closing version of Carole King’s You’ve Got a Friend, which was produced by Jerry ‘Wonda’ Duplessis of the Fugees. According to Amazon. com, “This album not only marks Ronald’s first solo foray, but the milestone, 50 years in the recording business! Mr. I continues
the Isley tradition of working with today’s hottest young producers. In addition to Fuego (who co-produced No More with Max Gousse) and Duplessis, other producers include Greg Curtis (known for his work with Keyshia Cole) on four tracks, Tricky Stewart, Kajun, and Song Dynasty. Ronald Isley has been picking up where he left off as senior member and lead singer of first generation Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers the Isley Brothers.” Besides those previously mentioned, Ronald Isley has worked with artists from Jimi Hendrix to Jill Scott. He’s planning to hook up with his old pal, R. Kelly for the next album that is set to release in 2012. In the past, when
working with R. Kelly, they’d get in the studio and crank out an album quickly. He mentioned working with Tricky Stewart again, along with other producers, but hasn’t really decided since the album is only in the beginning phase. Isley is sure about one thing though: “It’s gotta be something nobody expects.” I’ve been writing quite a bit [for this album]. And sometimes you gotta let somebody else do it so they can interject ideas into it. But there comes a time where I say ‘hold on, I’ve got to have at least 3-4 of my own ideas in it.’ This is going to be big… there’s just no excuses! It’s gotta be on!” he states of this latest endeavor. It’s no doubt that music has changed over the
decades and Ronald Isley has witnessed it all. Topping the list of differences, from the time he and his brothers started singing in the 50s, to now is digital music media. You know, iTunes, Zune, converting Youtube videos to mp3s, and the likes. “You put out a hit single and people don’t even have to buy the album thanks to music sharing. You want everyone to have your music, but you always have that feeling like if we did an album and it only sells a few hundred thousand, you start thinking ‘I wonder what woulda happened if [it weren’t for illegal music sharing].” He goes on to compare the selling of country music albums selling millions while R & B artists are not doing as well. “It has really hurt the R&B listeners because they just go another way [in regards to purchasing music]. Record sales just haven’t done as well in recent years. Lady Gaga is selling but
even Beyonce isn’t doing as well as she has in the past. And digital media might be the problem.” He admits, “Of course you’re going to blame it on that if you don’t sell as much,” but many of us have done a discredit to our favorite artists by choosing not to purchase an album for the cheaper (FREE) option of downloading it from a music sharing site. Fans of real music must start supporting music financially. At the time of our conversation, Ronald had plans to go to England or Africa to tour, but he knows he has “gotta come back to the states and push the new record”. He’s part of the Superstars of Soul concert coming up on September 17 at Chaifetz Arena with his brother Ernie Isley, El DeBarge, Keith Sweat, and After 7. The fans will be ready and waiting for this show!

I believe African Americans should play a major part in promoting urban events. This is the only way we can survive,” he adds. Daryel feels the Chaifetz Arena is a great venue. “Their staff is outstanding from the GM’s to the ushers.” Daryel also has a great relationship with the Fabulous Fox Theater and Steve Litman whom he’s worked with for two years to secure Chris Tucker, scheduled to appear October 28th. Instrumental in developing the careers of Toni Tony Tone, Vanessa Williams, and Will Downing, as Mid-Atlantic Marketing Manager based in Washington, DC (now known as Universal Records), Oliver was also a force in the career lives of Keith Sweat, Roy Ayers, and Young Ro.

It would have been nice if Dr. Cornel West hear her offering accomplishments on Obama’s behalf in order to combat never made the personal comments on Obama, criticisms. That’s fine, but to act as if Obama’s sh*t don’t stink is delubut it was an interview by Chris Hedges of Truth- sional at best and conciliatory to a fault at worse. dig.com entitled “The Obama Deception: Why And understanding where Harris-Perry (formerly Harris-Lacewell) is Cornel West Went Ballistic” and questions were coming from goes back to 2008 when she wrote the article “Who Died asked to which West answered. and Made Tavis King?” where she criticized Tavis Smiley (who we later found out endorsed Hillary Clinton prior to the Democratic National ConIt does seem petty on West’s part, but honestly, we all vention) for being mad that Barack Obama didn’t attend the State of the have an outsiders view on the relationship between West and Black Union that year. I think her later criticisms of Smiley and later West Obama. Clearly West felt that he had enough of a personal rela- are disingenous because prior to 2008, most of Black Academia were tionship to feel betrayed by Obama. I’m more interested in why tripping over each other to get a seat on that stage. By the same token, he felt betrayed beyond just getting his feelings hurt. For such as an electorate we must hold our elected officials accountable. When an answer, I turn to the latter part of the interview where West Harris-Perry in more recent memory lambasted Smiley and West for a discusses policy. comment about the “Machiavellian politics” of Obama, it was clear there was no love lost between the Harris-Perry and the two.
DR CORNELL WEST
It’s abundant West’s political self-identification as a Democratic Socialist. By his staunch advocating for the poor and his new rhetoric against the “plutocrats and oligarchs” we see that West is in favor of much more socialist programs. I think West’s betrayal came when he felt that Obama was giving more audience to the status quo and mainline advisors and economic policymakers–and not him. Mind you, if I had shown up on stage with Obama while he was campaigning 65 times, I would have at least expected some inauguration tickets or a return phone call as well. Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry’s response to West was childish and way beneath her standing as a public scholar and intellectual. She even accused West of undermining Obama’s candidacy in 2008 because of West’s outward criticism of him. But she’s long since had a problem with West and Tavis Smiley from back in 2008, and she’s been a water-carrier for Obama. Generally, I don’t hear her addressing Obama’s criticisms, but I
Harris-Perry’s support of Obama reminds me of the strange relationship seen in [black] churches with an authoritarian pastor. The hope is for a benevolent dictator, but dictator nonetheless. One who we support in public and mildly criticize behind closed doors. I am reminded of a quote from Ricky Jones’ What’s Wrong With Obamamania? Black America, Black Leadership and the Death of Political Imagination published prior to Obama’s victory. The black community, maybe more than any other, is affectively linked to churches and their pastors to the degree that criticism of either (no matter how rational) is often viewed as nothing short of an attack on God…Unfortunately, black ministers (be they emancipators or collaborators in oppression) are often protected from secular intellectual confrontation by the almost certain ire of their flocks, which is heaped upon any critic who questions their leaders’ decisions and/or motivations.” If we supposed Obama as a pastor, and the black community, steeped in an ecclesiastical leadership mindset, as the congregation of a church, then we’d see some stark parallels. For many of us, anything
“...accused West of undermining Obama’s candidacy in 2008 because of West’s outward criticism of him”
that was seen as a detriment or a derailment to Obama as a candidate or as president was to be handled in-house and as to not air dirty laundry. As for Harris-Perry, I can’t help but mention the tripe she spewed on Twitter comparing West’s criticisms to Donald Trump focusing entirely on the personal sensibilities of West and then said both of them had bad Obama hair. I thought it was telling when obviously made after her piece TheNation. the decision to on com was pubbe intentionally lished that her colleague black as well– fellow Dr. Eddie Glaude he married tweeted that he take her Michelle. But couldn’t seriously anyObama has the more. Certainly that was hyperprivilege of being bole on his part incidentally and a kneejerk reaction to her black when it article and her suits him. tweets I’m sure, but it did speak a deeper level of critical thought that we lack in this country at times. My major problem that I saw with the fallout was Black Twitter (yes, it does exist) and the Black Blogosphere’s innate inability to choose the provocative over the substantive thus choosing the path of least resistance. It was easier to talk about West being full of himself by seemingly lauding over the hotel worker who got inauguration tickets and he didn’t rather than discuss the effect of Lawrence Summers and Timothy Geitner controlling economic policy that disadvantages and ignores the poor, pays mere lip service to the middle class and protects the rights of big business and the rich in this country. Certainly West’s comment of Obama being afraid of a “free black man” added another level of complexity to the issue. Was West playing the race card? Yes he was, but knowing West, it wasn’t without merit for the sake of being sensational and covering up hurt feelings. Yes, Obama is black by all accounts, but he did have a white mother and white grandparents who were much more fundamental in his upbringing. West said that Obama “feels most comfortable with upper middle-class white and Jewish men who consider themselves very smart, very savvy and very effective in getting what they want.” Cer46 | DELUX Magazine SEPTEMBER 2011
tainly that’s a damning statement, but does it negate it’s veracity? There’s very little color in the persons that Obama has surrounded himself by. I don’t think that this is a nod toward wanting Obama to be the President of Black America as it is criticizing Obama for continuing business as usual–something that he more or less campaigned against. West brings up the touchy issue of ontological blackness. Is it a nice and politically correct subject to talk about? No. Not by a long stretch. But by us not talking about it doesn’t make the issue vanish into thin air. It’s my opinion West brought it up in this instance because of what he observed: who Obama has surrounded himself with and how he was raised. These are fair and equal criteria that would be apropos for me, my parents, and West himself: we are products of the matrices from which we have experienced in our lives. That is to say, Obama’s Euro-American and international upbringing is just as important to his ontology as I am the product of a mother who was a part of the Great Migration and a father who was born and raised in rural Acadiana here in Louisiana. I’m not convinced that West is expecting Obama to be apologetic from whence he came so much so as he wants Obama to be cognizant of it, to let Obama know that he knows and also to bring a wider knowledge to the masses about this.
Above all, West and Harris-Perry just have different political outlooks. I’m a bit shocked that as learned as both of them are that neither of them took the time to acknowledge their different politcal vantage points. West is a selfproclaimed Democratic Socialist. So am I, for
the most part. I believe in the process of the many electing a few for the sake of governance, but I also believe that the goverment should provide some basic services for all of it’s citizens–clear emphasis on all. I think it would be safe to label Harris-Perry, based on what I know of her from her former blog “The Kitchen Table” and her articles and essays over the years, her commentary on MSNBC and her tweets that she’s a Democratic Populist. To me this means she’s much more interested in ideas and policy that effect the majority of the people positively. This doesn’t mean that I believe she’s in favor of the status quo, but such a political situation isn’t as iconoclastic as what West was presenting.
say. Michael Eric Dyson termed it as one being intentionally black, incidentally black and accidentally black. West, is clearly and unapologetically, intentionally black. Obama obviously made the decision to be intentionally black as well–he married Michelle. But Obama has the privilege of being incidentally black when it suits him. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But I think this proves bad for the likes of West when it disadvantages the poor citizenry at the expense of protecting the rights of the few and rich.
Cornel West, goes the path of the iconoclasts before him: political and social alienation. This was evidenced in the May 17th interview on the Ed Schultz show on MSNBC where Ed was more or less scratching his head at West’s comments. And naturally so, you can’t explain ontological blackness in 60 seconds or less to a national audience. When HarrisPerry came on, Ed was found nodding his head much more and smiling in agreeance with what she had to Despite my Twitter rants and my satirically alleging that “Harris-Perry had a #lovejones for Barack Obama,” I respect and validate Harris-Perry’s opinion on this issue. It’s just that I think she chose to highlight the provocative over the substantive issues, and for that, as a community and as citizens of this country, we’ve got to do better. Keep it uppity and keep it truthfully radical, JLL

THE 2011 SOCIAL BREAKUP Words: Darryl Frierson EMAIL: dfrietheauthor@gmail.com BLOG: www.ashy2classy.net
A break-up is never good and is something we all never intend to deal with when we get into a relationship with someone. The end of relationships aren’t as simple as shaking hands with the person and waving good-bye. Many times there are idiotic things people do when in that emotional state. Now with the advent of social media the break-up can be heightened to another level. Not only can you simply just gripe to your friends about your break-up but also to the 1,472 twitter followers you have as well. Welcome to the new age break-up via Twitter and Facebook. In an earlier tandem post Battle of the Sexes: Social Networking and Relationships we discussed how social networking has made many of us alter the way we look at our relationships in the public domain. But, right when I think I have seen everything when it comes to social networking scorn between Joe Budden and Esther Baxter makes me shake my head. If you are unaware the rapper Joe Budden and the video vixen/ model Esther Baxter have had a high-profile break-up and beef over twitter the past week. A break-up and a few subliminal shots over twitter no big deal right? The difference with this public break-up is this couple has more than just a few shots. They are dropping bombs on each other. They are arguing publicly over personal issues within their relationship: infidelity, physical abuse, and pregnancy via the internet. Joe Budden even went as far to make a 6 minute song talking about his ex-girl friend while Esther Baxter does “interviews” with online gossip sites such as Bossip. If you want to read their twitter war you can check it out here. This is nothing new to see celebrity (and I mean celebrity in Joe Budden and Esther Baxter very loosely here) couples go through public break-ups in the media. But, now it seems like any couple can go on twitter or Facebook and try to air each other out. It seems that we have regularly people trying to one up their ex through social networking. Social nNetworking has now given the common person a platform to air out their dirty laundry not just celebrities. A person can put their ex on blast by displaying pictures, letters, emails, and videos of their mate.
Artists have written and performed songs to talk about their heartache and pain in a relationship. In hip hop MCs have been no different talking about ill-relationships with women in song. Joe Budden’s though dropped a track that definitely let everyone know how he felt about Esther Baxter. He would drop the song “Ordinary Love Shit” where he would go in on Esther Baxter like a Terry McMillan would a man in a book. In particular the verse by Notorious B.I.G. on R. Kelly’s song “Be Happy” where he weaves lyrics that any person knows he is talking about his wife at the time Faith Evans. The track was always slick because Biggie was able to talk about relationship without it coming off trite. From the male perspective I have to question Joe’s reasoning for going hard on a woman in a public domain like that. I was always told by the “old heads” that man shouldn’t be seen arguing with his woman in public. The reasoning behind this that a man should be able to not let his relationship angers be shown to the world because it shows the man has no control over his emotions. I certainly don’t know their whole relationship dynamic but I can say with definite thought that Joe Budden hasn’t gone through anything with this woman that any other man hasn’t gone through with a woman. It shows a lot of bitchassness in Joe Budden to sit there to take his relationship woes to twitter and sit there arguing with a woman over social media. I am not excusing a woman doing a social media relationship rant but a man should be able to keep his mental/emotional faculties a bit more in check. We all go through stuff in relationships. Every man has been cheated on and done wrong but is there a need to social media and tell the world about every intricate detail of their relationship? I have made it a personal preference of mine to make my social media experience as least personal intrusive as possible. I may talk about a few things in a general state but I will not display too many of love triumphs and defeats(except in the Marcus Graham Chronicles) out of not only respect for myself but also for the women that enter my life. I will not subscribe to these things just for a preventive maintenance for a potential Joe Budden/Esther Baxter situation cannot brew. I just come from the school that the less rope I give the less you can really hang me with it. At the end of the day, what does going hard on your ex on twitter do for you? Does it really give you any satisfaction to know you showed up @tasteyfreeze in 140 characters or less? Does it make you feel any better to know you had 26 people Like the fact you went off on James Evans on Facebook? Every day we go through different things that will cause us heartache and pain but it is how we deal with these situations that will show our strength as a man or woman.
Jake Overstreet period
Jake Overstreet was not like the average child growing up. When other kids his age were outside playing, Jake was inside with his grandmother. She taught him the fundamentals of art and it is because of her that that Jake was able to lay down the foundation for his career of art. When he was in high school, he set records and was recognized at his graduation for taking every Fine Arts class that McCluer North had to offer. His talents in art landed him a full ride to college. Here’s his story.
D: Art comes in different shapes and forms. What styles do you prefer? J: I did various styles during different time periods in my life. Like the time I went through the bubble process styled art. It was a time in my life that I was either happy or I was feeling that vibe that the art was giving off. And then I started to do the swirl paint with enamel oil and latex paint. I started to experiment and really stand out; gluing Dum Dum suckers and M&M’s to a canvas with paint built up on top of each other. I really tried to think outside the box. D: What do you love about art? J: I’m a big texture guy. I love the designed basic elements of art that you learn as a kid.
54 | DELUX Magazine AUGUST 2011
I like using the basic forms of art in different ways. Whether it is by using texture, making a bubble surface, or making a cluster of colorful bubbles and lining them up with another cluster of colorful bubbles. I would rather my art be too deep than too shallow. I like to try stuff too big then turn it into something microscopic; something that people can understand. That is why my canvas cut outs have been so successful. D: What was your most beloved piece of art? O: My favorite piece of art that I created was my first time experimenting with media from my yard. It was a bunch of jars flowing out of black paint and different colors all around it. But the jars were being emphasized because I painted them a little brighter. I sold it for $45 dollars because I didn’t have a job. Some of the best art I have I sold for a cheap price because I didn’t have any money and that’s how I needed to make it. There have been times when I have sold my art at the Farmer’s Market, the Ferguson Art Council District in downtown Ferguson, and I have sold at Quirk’s Bar & Grill. Last summer I sold $3000 worth of paintings and it was the most money I have ever made in a two-month period with my art. It was awesome. I lost a lot of my portfolio because I sold some great pieces. But at the
Words: Onyi Kokelu Photo: Lawrence Bryant same time, a lot of people have my art and that’s what I like. If I can sell something and somebody says, “Hey I’ve got your painting hanging up in my room,” that’s a cool feeling! To be honest with you, lately I have been giving away pieces because A: I don’t need them anymore and B: all they do is sit in my room. I’d much rather have my buddy Byron that lives up the street have my piece in his basement where his mom or his little brother can see it rather than in my room. D: What goal do you have for your art? O: I want to take my art to the next level. I like to do that with every style I do. I ask myself, “How can I push it? How can I try something completely different, but they know it’s still me.” I live by this quote and that is the challenge that I think every artist faces. In the future, I will most definitely be getting my masters and hopefully selling art as my career goes on whether it is in Chicago, New York, or San Francisco. I also want to become a college art teacher. That’s what I have planned so far. If you want to find out more information about Jakes art or where to purchase it, visit him online www.facebook.com/Jake Overstreet.

A native of Galveston Texas, Tony Scott grew up knowing he would be someone who just wanted to love his career as well as his wife and family. “My father would always say your mom will cook for us Monday through Thursday, but Friday through Saturday, you figure it out.” Going to broadcast school in 1982, he went from station to station like an army man going base to base. St. Louis was lucky to get him in February 20th, 1989 where he join the clear channel team and began working with his daughter’s God Father Mark Clark. Deep down, he believes he’s in
his prime especially working with Tammie Holland. He goes on to say “there’s been meetings where they tried to separate us, we both would say no” due to the awesome chemistry they share. While we were in the studio, you could here the passion that this man has working with his co-partner and he enjoys working with her like she is his best friend. Tony Scott is a dedicated man. He feels if he can’t put his best in a show “I just take off” which made a lot of us laugh. “When I came here in 1989, I was on the radio talking about my wife and daughters even when the heads didn’t want me to, now everyone talks about their families.”

What inspired you to begin South Grand Delivered?
Andy: I come from a nonprofit background, so I had all these altruistic visions and ideas from the get-go. I was a conference last summer and [the speakers] were like, ‘This country needs jobs, 40 million jobs…what are we doing to create jobs?’ And I’m thinking… What am I doing to create jobs? I think part of the reason we started this was to show you can do something green, to show you can use bikes, and do something different than normal. That buying local can work. Andy: I was in a bike accident on Gravois Avenue about a year and a half ago. About a month after the accident, Evenn found a bike just like my old one and said ‘You’re getting back on this horse and you’re gonna enjoy it.’ We started this business four months later. The idea behind the business was we love riding bike--how can we be a part of urban biking? Plus we thought there was space to make some money, help some local businesses, and try and create some new jobs. We’re
Did you start SGD with the idea of conscientiousness in mind? Evenn: Yeah--it was a big part of it.

work. But we gotta work together to make it happen. What void is SDG filling in local restaurant deliveries? Evenn: Customers want a different type of delivery service. But I think a lot of it is [customer] laziness…or they really don’t want to leave the house on a cold day. Plus the food is fresh. It’s cut up a few hours before it was put in the oven as opposed to two days ago… so you know it’s good.
Andy: We’re helping good local restaurants get their food into people’s mouths. How does South Grand Delivered keep local dollars local? Andy: It’s because we live and work in the community in which we serve. If we keep money in our local economy, tax dollars stay local. People are helping their neighbors and that goes a really long way…we’re neighbors helping neighbors. DELUX-MAG.COM SEPTEMBER 2011 | 57

She and her husband of fifteen years, Max, are the founders of The Shrimp Shack Grill and the creators of JoJo’s Miracle Seasoning. The Shrimp Shack on Natural Bridge was recently expanded to become a grill. “Everything is my recipe, [The food is] homemade and made fresh daily. All the seasonings are mine as well. The goal is to get my seasonings in grocery stores across the country.” JoJo is working on her downtown location, JoJo’s Downtown. This will be a 24-hour restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the meantime, check out JoJo’s House of Ribs featuring Max the Barbecue King at 182 East Grand. You get double the pleasure because they sell barbecue along with the items sold at The Shrimp Shack. Max’s barbecue is getting rave reviews and is the new taste in barbecue in St. Louis!

And that is exactly what he has done. During his 8-year stretch as Alderman of the 6th Ward (the area from the western half of downtown into south city), Reed was responsible for the 1.7 billion dollar redevelopment project that revamped the downtown area. Notably evident in what used to be a heavily deteriorated area, Lafayette Square has done a 360 degree turnaround, complete with new housing units, restaurants, and shops. “We were able to create the first TIF in economic development in the city of St. Louis right here in Lafayette Square”. Impressive right? What’s even more remarkable is that he was the FIRST African American Alderman to even represent the 6th Ward. “I was happy about having the opportunity to work with people from all backgrounds, nationalities because the 6th Ward is the melting pot of the city. Having the opportunity to work across those [cultural] barriers and to allow African Americans, Caucasians, Bosnians, Hispanics, Italians, etc. to work in unison is an honorable experience.”

ewis Reed, one of the most accomplished men in the city of St. Louis, is all of that and more.
Currently serving as the first African American President of the Board of
Aldermen, Reed is working to demolish the evident racial barriers that exist here in one of the top 10 segregated cities of America. “I see the changes we can make [as a community] and how much progress can be made through unification and how strong we are collectively as opposed to divided. The challenge is staying true to that and remaining
And being that Reed is one of the highest officials in the city (only 2nd to the Mayor), the top is a lot closer than it seems. “I’m happy doing what I’m doing now. I’m the second highest ranked official in the city, so the only other office to run for would be the mayor. One day before I retire, I will run for mayor [laughs]. The people want it – they want a change”.
