PORTRAITS OF YOUNG MEN IN A WHITE SHIRT a photographic exhibition by CLEON MANZ You may recognise photographer Cleon Manz from previous editions of deluxx, whose enigmatic menswear imagery graced our front cover on the last issue. Cleon is currently preparing for her upcoming exhibition entitled ‘Portraits of Young Men in a White Shirt’ and deluxx caught up with Cleon to find out what was the inspiration behind this exhibition. I had this idea to photograph each male model or actor that came to my studio in a vintage tuxedo shirt I had lying around. At the end of the shoot I would ask the model if I could photograph them in this shirt. Five years later, looking at the collection of pictures I’ve made so far I see a very strong individuality and each person makes the shirt their own. In these images the shirt enhances the individual man but also unifies them, it frames them. It seems that I’ve created a typographical document specifically of a group of men chosen for their modelling & acting skills. In men’s fashion the white shirt is a classic staple garment not unlike the ‘little black dress’ in womenswear. It’s invisible but it’s there. The shirt manages to look great on all of the men.
These images were shot from 2005 and the project continues.
