THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to Central Park this evening for tonight’s JD Cymru North game against Holywell Town.
I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Holywell players, coaching team, Committee and supporters
Over the last few weeks or so we have seen the roof go on our new changing room, kitchen and function room construction. Last week the contractors completed putting the guttering around the roof and we are now seeing real progress We are aiming to have blockwork on the walls start shortly As with any new build of this nature we have seen a few problems along the way, and we have had to amend some of our plans to suit these issues. I’m sure you’ll agree it is becoming to look an impressive building
A few weeks ago, I was here to see our Reserves take on TNS Reserves Despite losing 4-1 to the Academy scholarship players of TNS our young lads put on such a battling display it bodes so well for the future. I couldn’t help but be impressed with how every player was putting in so much effort for the team and how they were playing as a team They have since had a tough 4-3 defeat here to Llay Welfare Reserves in a game they should really have won with a more depleted squad as Dewi called up two of the Reserves squad to the First Team that afternoon Credit must go to the Reserves manager Liam Nash and his coaching team of Al Griffiths, Sion Jones and Richard Morris for all their work behind the scenes and putting together such a committed squad.
The Ladies have had a change in their management team over the last month with Ellen Lawson standing down as manager Ellen has been involved with the Ladies for so many years having been a player under John Clayton’s leadership and then stepping into the manager’s role in 2021. She has made an outstanding contribution to the Club and deservedly received the Club Person of the Season in 2022/23 We’d all like to thank her for her work with the Ladies Ellen will continue to have links with the Club as she will still be running her Junior Girls team.
Aled Davies has agreed to step in as manager of the Ladies. He will be helped by Carla Rizzi as coach. Both have great experience with Ladies football Aled has previously been manager of Llandyrnog and St Asaph’s mens teams before taking over as manager of Rhyl Ladies He moved to help our Ladies as assistant to Ellen in 2021. Like Ellen, Carla has been involved with the Ladies for many seasons and still plays the occasional game and is also a Coach for her Juniors Girls team Good luck to them both in their new roles.
Tonight, Dewi’s lads face last season’s league champions Holywell Town and it’s sure to be a tough game. With the departure recently of some players he now has a young squad which play some really exciting football As a Man Utd supporter, it reminds me of the Man Utd team of the mid nineteen nineties, when Alan Hansen said the infamous line “ You’ll never win anything with kids”. Let’s hope our team can emulate that team in some way
Enjoy tonight’s game.
THE GAFFER
Welcome back to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North game against Holywell Town.
We come into the game on the back of three league defeats in November and tonight’s game against last season’s champions is one where we really need to put in a good team performance.
When we played Holywell in September, we took an early lead and then defended well throughout a Holywell onslaught before adding a last minute goal to double our lead A result like that will go down well tonight but we are under no illusions as it will be a hard game and Holywell will want revenge for our win at their place. We know Holywell will be tough opponents as they fully warrant their third placed league standing and are on a good run of four unbeaten league games
Last weekend we travelled to Llay Welfare , a place where we have never done well In fairness to Llay they seemed to want the game more than us. They put us under pressure from the start, scored an early goal and should have been two up but for a cracking penalty save from Aaron Jones We then came into the game and in reality, we should have been home and dry by half time We got two well taken goals from Owen Davies and Iwan Roberts but missed a host of chances which at this level we must do better at We spoke candidly at half time but failed to come out of the blocks for the second half and Llay scored another early goal to equalise. Nevertheless. I felt we were still in control of the game and pressed well to create more chances which we couldn’t convert They broke on a counterattack which resulted in us conceding a penalty which this time they converted. We still had plenty of time to equalise, but that killer touch in front of goal evaded us and we came away disappointed with the outcome
The last few games including the 3-0 Welsh Cup win at Llanrwst have given us the opportunity to allow some of our Reserves lads to make First Team appearances. Tom Salisbury has done so well when he has come on and scored a superb sole goal in our 6-2 win over Llandudno. The Llanrwst game saw us giving first debut appearances for Morgan Fricker and Gabriel Hinchcliffe who both came on in the latter stages of the game. Both had played 90 minutes for the Reserves the night before along with Tom Salisbury and all three merited the step up to the first team with their performances that night.
With the recent departure of three players who have decided to drop down to play at Tier 3 level, it is so good to have players of calibre in the Reserves to step up to the First Team. I’ve said it before in my previous programme notes that this is a squad game now and as a management team, we select a starting eleven on the evidence we’ve seen of player’s performances at training and in recent games.
We look at the opposition and set up how we best think we can break them down Each player has his own attributes, and we look to utilise these as best as we can. Substitutions during games and at certain times can so influence a game as evidenced by the ones we made against Llanrwst when we immediately scored our second goal after a change of formation following a substitution
Thanks for your support. Enjoy the game.
DENBIGH FALL TO LLAY IN FINAL AWAY TRIP OF 2024
Llay Welfare 3-2 Denbigh Town
Denbigh Town’s final away game of 2024 ended in defeat on Saturday as basement side Llay Welfare picked up three points.
Dewi Llion’s side came from behind to lead 2-1 at the break via Owen Davies and a first Denbigh goal for Iwan Roberts, but after the break Llay rallied to reverse the scoreline and win just their second game of the campaign
Llay began the much brighter side in this contest and threatened Jones’ goal with three minutes played Harvey Ellis saw the ball fall to him on the edge of the box before striking a half volley goalwards that was pushed aside by Jones.
Four minutes later after consistent pressure the home side took the lead Town failed to stop a low ball across the face of goal from Jonathan Collo and Sam John was there at the back post to poke home.
On 15 minutes things went from bad to worse for Denbigh when Biensio Kamilo was through on goal chasing a long ball over the top and Jones rushed out only to wipe out the forward and the referee pointed to the spot. Collo stepped up but Jones guessed right to make a brilliant stop
This appeared to spark Town to life who suddenly got forward with a purpose, and less than two minutes after the failed spot-kick Vaughan played a superb ball into the box for Davies to get on the end of and level
It now looked like Denbigh were the side in the ascendancy and could have taken the lead on 20 minutes when Iwan Roberts made inroads into the box on the right before laying it to Nathan Brown, but his effort deflected wide
Roberts proved to be a thorn in the side of Llay and popped up five minutes later to find the net Vaughan again the provider fed the Town forward who smashed home from an angle
Not to be outdone Davies had another opportunity before the break when again Vaughan fed the ball over the top but his effort from an acute angle was blocked for a corner
After the break you knew the next goal was vital and it wouldn’t take too long to discover who’d get it Forward Collo put his penalty miss to the back of his mind three minutes into the restart when he met a cross with acres of space in the box to nod the equaliser.
Two minutes later Denbigh almost restored their lead when Vaughan did well down the left flank before bringing the ball to the box and forcing a save from the keeper.
Brown was next in line for a chance seven minutes later when Davies did well on the turn on half way to find the winger but his attempted lob from distance was easily matched.
However, Denbigh’s second-half collapse came to fruition with 66 minutes played when Keiron Roberts hacked down Collo in the box and the referee pointed to the spot once more Ellis stepped up and Jones was beaten this time to give Llay the lead for the second time in the game.
Denbigh tried to switch things up adding the energetic Tom Salisbury and Cal Butler to the fray but Denbigh struggled to test the Welly custodian in search for their third The hosts almost put it to bed four minutes into the eight added when Scott Swords ran through but Ben Lockley made an excellent tackle to give Town a glimmer of hope.
However, full-time came marking Town’s final trip of the calendar year and continues a half-centurylong run of winless matches at the Ring

WE’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Denbigh Town begin a stretch of five home games on the trot tonight.
We begin the month this evening against Holywell as the first of four successive games at Central Park
Next weekend will see Dewi Llion’s side face Llanuwchllyn in the JD Welsh Cup as Town look to make it to the Quarter-Final for the first time in club history A week later we’ll face Buckley in our rearranged clash.
It doesn’t get any less important after that as Ruthin Town come to LL16 for the Vale of Clwyd Derby on Boxing Day. Last season saw 1,145 supporters attend in a clubrecord crowd. Paul Fleming netted a stoppage-time winner for Denbigh on a sensational afternoon
We wrap up the series with a New Year’s Day clash with Flint Mountain. If it’s anything like to match earlier this season it’s set to be a cracker where at 4-1 down Denbigh rallied to take a point at Cae-YCastell
Our next away game is five weeks away with the long journey to Caersws. We’ll end January with another home doubleheader against Guilsfield and Penrhyncoch in the JD Cymru North.

TOP 5 AWAY GAMES OF 2024
Last weekend’s trip to Llay Welfare marked the final away game for Denbigh Town this calendar year. Here we take a look at five of the best games on the road in 2024.
Buckley Town 1-2 Denbigh Town (JD Cymru North
- 10/02/24)
Denbigh snatched all three points at Deeside Stadium when Owen Davies grabbed his first goal for the club after 89 minutes. Town led via Josh Lock before being pegged back in the first half, but substitute Davies came on and stepped up, burying a penalty with a minute to play
Llanrwst United
0-3 Denbigh Town
(JD Welsh Cup - 16/11/24)
Town made history at Llanrwst by reaching the Fourth Round of the Welsh Cup for the first time in 52 years Nathan Brown netted in the first half before Owen Davies grabbed a superb second. In stoppage time Keelan Williams stepped up to smash home a penalty to set up a last-16 clash with Llanuwchllyn.
Holywell
Town
0-2 Denbigh
Town (JD Cymru North - 28/09/24)
Town had to wait two months for their first away win of the campaign and it came at the league champions. Owen Davies grabbed the first after less than a minute before at the other end of the match Sam Duffy finished brilliantly to ensure a huge three points for Dewi Llion’s men
Llanidloes Town 0-7 Denbigh Town (JD Cymru North - 06/04/24)
Town equaled their record winning margin in the second tier back in April when hitting seven against relegated Llanidloes It was the first time since October 1996 that Town won by that margin in the second tier, with the last opposition also being Llanidloes. Goals from Paul Fleming, Nathan Brown (brace), Owen Davies (hatrick) and Billy Holmes - scoring his second goal for the club exactly three years to the day since his first - secured the win
Bangor
1876
3-4
Denbigh Town (JD Cymru North - 11/10/24)
A dramatic late winner between two sides who’ve had plenty of competition in the last two years Town took an early two goal lead via Nathan Brown and Owen Davies before being pegged back. Paul Fleming restored the lead before another equaliser and in stoppage time Harrison Bellis turned the ball home to win it at the death It was Denbigh’s first ever win over Bangor at Nantporth
BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back
THE OPPOSITION
HOLYWELL TOWN
Ground: Halkyn Road
Capacity: 2,000
Nickname: The Wellmen
Founded: 1880
2023/24: 1st
Manager: Johnny Haseldin
Holywell’s first club was initially formed in 1880 before the current iteration was established 66 years later.
In 1946, former soldiers who had been demobilised and returned home from fighting in World War II established the club at Halkyn Road, where it has played its home games ever since It was also around this period that the moniker of The Wellmen was adopted by the club, a nickname which the club still uses to this day
After cup successes further achievements came to Holywell when they joined the Welsh League (North) in the 1949–50 season In the 1952–53 season when Holywell Town became the Welsh League (North) champions for the first and only time Holywell Town maintained their membership of the Welsh League (North) for 17 consecutive seasons from the 1949–50 season until the 1965–66 season, when they finished bottom of the league and just one point behind 14th-placed side Blaenau Ffestiniog Thereafter, Holywell Town left the Welsh League (North) and played in the local football leagues
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Holywell played in the local football league system, most notably in the Clwyd League
in the 1986–87 season, the club finally earned some silverware when they won the Clwyd League Premier Division title as well as triumphing in the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup to earn a league and cup double The club continued to earn silverware during that period when they successfully defended their Clwyd League Premier Division title in the following season, winning it for the second time in a row
Holywell Town were selected to become founder members of the Cymru Alliance In spite of Holywell's lowly league placements, they left the Cymru Alliance to ascend to become one of the founding members of the newly created national league - the League of Wales - for the 1992–93 season
Under the management of Glyn Griffiths, aided by the 17 league goals from Ian Howat, and possessing the joint-third best defence in the league with just 48 goals conceded, the club finished the first LoW season in 6th position This made Holywell the best-performing founding member to originate from the Cymru Alliance but were relegated two years later They were promoted back to the top flight a year later but would return to the Cymru Alliance after a season Although they saw an improvement to fortunes under the guidance of Andy Nicholls during the 2004–05 season, by finishing in 9th position, they were eventually relegated to the Welsh Alliance League in the following season when they finished 17th in the league, nine points adrift of safety, and with only their local rival Halkyn United below them Holywell won their first piece of silverware in thirteen years, by beating Conwy United 3–2 in the FAW Trophy at the neutral venue of Belle Vue, Rhyl For the start of the 2012–13 season, Mike Thomas was replaced as Holywell manager by their club captain, Johnny Haseldin, who adopted a player-manager role After nine years of competing in the Welsh Alliance League, the 2014–15 season became Holywell's time to shine when they finally clinched the Division 1 title As well as claiming the Welsh Alliance League title, Holywell Town also earned themselves further silverware when they won the FAW Trophy and Mawddach Cup The club would drop back into the third tier in 2019 Despite agonisingly suffering relegation from the Cymru Alliance, Holywell Town's hiatus from the second tier would only last a season They managed to clinch the WNL Premier title and gain promotion back to the now-named Cymru North, albeit on a superior points-per-game (PPG) ratio after the Welsh football season was halted and concluded due to the COVID-19 pandemic In their first season back in the Cymru North, Holywell Town finished the 2021-22 campaign in fourth position The 2022–23 season proved to be even more successful for Holywell as the club achieved a second-place finish in the league, their best league performance in the Welsh football pyramid since their last appearance in the League of Wales in the 1998-99 season A year later the Wellmen secured the Cymru North league title

DENBIGH TOWN LADIES
Denbigh Town Ladies have a new manager at the helm following the departure of Ellen Lawson.
Lawson, who took on the role in the summer of 2021 takes a step back but will remain with her junior groups
The former boss has a history with the side that stretches back to the origins of the Ladies side under the then-managment of John Clayton. One of the club’s pioneering figures for women’s football, Lawson moves on with an outstanding track record
The club has moved swiftly to ensure a smooth transition and are pleased to announce that Assistant Manager Aled Davies and Captain Carla Rizzi will take over as manager and assistant.
Davies has a wealth of experience in the game having managed the likes of St Asaph City and Llandyrnog United. He took over at Rhyl Ladies in 2019 before arriving at Central Park in 2021. He has worked as assistant to Lawson during that time and now takes over as manager
Rizzi was named captain in the summer and has a long-standing history with the side She has coaching experience at various junior levels and now balances her role on the pitch with one in the dugout as Davies’ assistant.
We would like to place on record our thanks to Ellen for a tremendous three years at the helm and wish Aled and Carla the best in their roles.

DENBIGH TOWN RESERVES
Denbigh Town Reserves fell to a cruel defeat at Central Park on Saturday afternoon as they entertained Llay.
Hosting the Welly’s Reserves whilst the First Team made the journey the other way, Gruff Rogers’ brace and an effort from Serhad Kanli weren’t enough as Llay struck a 95th minute winner from the penalty spot.
Missing both Tom Salisbury and Gabriel Hinchcliffe who were on duty with the First Team, Town named three changes to the side that faced TNS two weeks ago Rogers, Joe Mead and Serhad Kanli all came into the side
Town began well and took the lead on 16 minutes when Rogers’ cross from the left sailed into the back of the net However, just nine minutes later the visitors were level via Kian Turton
In a battle at LL16 both sides searched for the lead going into the break and it was Denbigh who found it, Rogers again finding the net for his third of the campaign and second of the afternoon.
Much like the First Team Town took a 2-1 lead into the break against Llay and could eventually surrender that advantage Tom Wells restored parity five minutes into the half before grabbing his second 15 minutes later
Now chasing the game Denbigh piled forward and with 13 left to play Kanli finished inside the box well to make it 3-3 and secured his 5th goal in the league this season However, there was to be one final twist in the tale
Deep into stoppage time a ball into the Town box was adjudged to have struck a hand and despite the protestation of the home side the referee pointed to the spot. Wells stepped up for his third goal and three points for the visitors
