THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Welsh Cup 4 th Round tie against CPD Llanuwchllyn of the Lock Stock Ardal North East I’d like to welcome the players, management team, committee and supporters of Llanuwchllyn to the ground.
Both teams are looking to proceed to the Quarter Finals of Wales’ most prestigious Cup competition and its looking to be a great encounter. Llanuwchllyn are the underdogs as they are in the league below ourselves and Dewi and his lads will have to be on their toes from the start to avoid a potential cup upset.
Last weekend was so frustrating with us having to call off our League game against Holywell on the Friday evening. The pitch was in a good condition, bar for a couple of wet patches when the referee did his inspection at 4 30pm on that afternoon But with the forecast of more heavy rain to come and strong winds, it was a wise decision to call the game off as Storm Darragh hit Denbigh that evening with a vengeance
The referees not only have to consider the state of the pitch before calling a game off , but must also take into account the safety of players and spectators with any poor weather forecasts imminent when the game is due to take place.
The FAW did announce on the Friday afternoon that all games in Wales on the Saturday were to be postponed due to the forecast and this was certainly a good move on their part
Over the last few weeks or so we have seen the roof go on our new changing room, kitchen and function room construction Last week the contractors completed putting the guttering around the roof and we are now seeing real progress. We are aiming to have blockwork on the walls start shortly. As with any new build of this nature we have seen a few problems along the way, and we have had to amend some of our plans to suit these issues I’m sure you’ll agree it is becoming to look an impressive building It was also pleasing to note that there was no damage to the structure in the strong winds last weekend.
The Ladies have had a change in their management team over the last month with Ellen Lawson standing down as manager Ellen has been involved with the Ladies for so many years having been a player under John Clayton’s leadership and then stepping into the manager’s role in 2021. She has made an outstanding contribution to the Club and deservedly received the Club Person of the Season in 2022/23 We’d all like to thank her for her work with the Ladies Ellen will continue to have links with the Club as she will still be running her Junior’s Girls team.
Aled Davies has agreed to step in as manager of the Ladies He will be helped by Carla Rizzi as coach Both have great experience with Ladies football. Aled has previously been manager of Llandyrnog and St Asaph men’s teams before taking over as manager of Rhyl Ladies. He moved to help our Ladies as assistant to Ellen in 2021 Like Ellen, Carla has been involved with the Ladies for many seasons and still plays the occasional game and is also a Coach for her Juniors Girls team Good luck to them both in their new roles
Back to this afternoon’s game Our Red Café is open serving hot and cold food and drink Our bar is open serving a variety of alcoholic drinks
Enjoy the game!
THE GAFFER
Good afternoon and welcome to Central Park, Denbigh. Pnawn da a chroeso cynnes i chi gyd i Barc Canolog, Dinbych.
This afternoon we welcome Llanuwchllyn for this fourth round JD Welsh Cup tie We stand as favourites as we’re a league higher, but I’m in no doubt it’s going to be a tough game and Llanuwchllyn will want to claim our scalp, and from our point of view we want to avoid an upset.
Llanuwchllyn had a tremendous away win over JD Cymru Premier side Newtown on penalties in the Round Two and followed this up with a 3-0 home win over Swansea University in the last round. They’re enjoying their cup run and who could blame them, so we know we can expect a hard game
Sion Tudor their manager always sets his side up well and they have experienced players in their squad including Ceri James and Ilan Hughes who have both played at a higher level in Welsh football They also have one of our ex-players in their ranks – Warren Duckett – who was one of our key players for five seasons between 2013 and 2018 .
We missed out on our home game last week against Holywell when it was called off We really wanted to put right the disappointing 3-2 loss we incurred at Llay Welfare a fortnight ago. Nevertheless. we’ve had a couple of good training sessions this week and are raring to go with a full squad available for selection.
The last few games including the 3-0 Welsh Cup Third Round win at Llanrwst has given us the opportunity to allow some of our Reserves lads to make First Team appearances. Tom Salisbury has done so well when he has come on and scored a superb solo goal in our 6-2 win over Llandudno
The Llanrwst game saw us giving first debut appearances for Morgan Fricker and Gabriel Hinchcliffe who both came on in the latter stages of the game. Both had played 90 minutes for the Reserves the night before along with Tom Salisbury and all three merited the step up to the first team with their performances that night. All three youngsters will be in contention for being included in today’s squad .
The Welsh Cup is one our Club has not progressed far in recent years, and it is over fifty years since we reached the fourth round of the competition. Back in 1972 under John Trevor Roberts as manager we went down 4-0 to Oswestry Town. I’m looking for us to go one better than that team and to be in the hat for the Quarter Final draw next week
TOWN FALL TO DEFEAT AT LLAY
Llay Miners Welfare 3-2 Denbigh Town
Denbigh Town’s misery when it comes to travelling to Llay Welfare continued a fortnight ago with a 3-2 loss at the Ring.
Dewi Llion’s side came from behind to lead 2-1 at the break via Owen Davies and a first Denbigh goal for Iwan Roberts, but after the break Llay rallied to reverse the scoreline and win just their second game of the campaign
Llay began the much brighter side in this contest and threatened Jones’ goal with three minutes played Harvey Ellis saw the ball fall to him on the edge of the box before striking a half volley goalwards that was pushed aside by Jones.
Four minutes later after consistent pressure the home side took the lead Town failed to stop a low ball across the face of goal from Jonathan Collo and Sam John was there at the back post to poke home.
On 15 minutes things went from bad to worse for Denbigh when Biensio Kamilo was through on goal chasing a long ball over the top and Jones rushed out only to wipe out the forward and the referee pointed to the spot. Collo stepped up but Jones guessed right to make a brilliant stop
This appeared to spark Town to life who suddenly got forward with a purpose, and less than two minutes after the failed spot-kick Vaughan played a superb ball into the box for Davies to get on the end of and level
It now looked like Denbigh were the side in the ascendancy and could have taken the lead on 20 minutes when Iwan Roberts made inroads into the box on the right before laying it to Nathan Brown, but his effort deflected wide
Roberts proved to be a thorn in the side of Llay and popped up five minutes later to find the net Vaughan again the provider fed the Town forward who smashed home from an angle
Not to be outdone Davies had another opportunity before the break when again Vaughan fed the ball over the top but his effort from an acute angle was blocked for a corner
After the break you knew the next goal was vital and it wouldn’t take too long to discover who’d get it Forward Collo put his penalty miss to the back of his mind three minutes into the restart when he met a cross with acres of space in the box to nod the equaliser.
Two minutes later Denbigh almost restored their lead when Vaughan did well down the left flank before bringing the ball to the box and forcing a save from the keeper.
Brown was next in line for a chance seven minutes later when Davies did well on the turn on half way to find the winger but his attempted lob from distance was easily matched.
However, Denbigh’s second-half collapse came to fruition with 66 minutes played when Keiron Roberts hacked down Collo in the box and the referee pointed to the spot once more Ellis stepped up and Jones was beaten this time to give Llay the lead for the second time in the game.
Denbigh tried to switch things up adding the energetic Tom Salisbury and Cal Butler to the fray but Denbigh struggled to test the Welly custodian in search for their third The hosts almost put it to bed four minutes into the eight added when Scott Swords ran through but Ben Lockley made an excellent tackle to give Town a glimmer of hope.
However, full-time came marking Town’s final trip of the calendar year and continues a half-centurylong run of winless matches at the Ring

THE JOURNEY SO FAR IN THE JD WELSH CUP
Denbigh Town made history this season by reaching the Last-16 of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time in 52 years.
Town entered at the Second Round stage after finishing in the top eight of the JD Cymru North last term
Denbigh began with Llangefni coming to Central Park in October where despite going a goal behind a brace from Harrison Bellis turned the game on it’s head. In the second half goals from Nathan Brown and Paul Fleming saw off a late fightback from Llangefni to see Dewi Llion’s side through.
In the Third Round Town faced a tricky tie away at Llanrwst. Brown got Town off to a good start before Owen Davies netted in the second half to put one foot through the door. In stoppage time Keelan Williams stepped up to convert a penalty to break a record over half a century old.
Meanwhile today’s visitors have already seen off five sides in the competition after starting in the First Qualifying Round. They manoeuvred past Forden United back in July before the 10-0 decemation of Berriew to secure their place in the First Round proper.
After seeing off Penmaenmawr Phoenix in Round One they hosted JD Cymru Premier side Newtown at Village Hall, compelting a giant killing via penalties in October.
Next up they took on Swansea University of the Ardal South-West with a routine 30 win to set up a last-16 tie with Denbigh.

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

DENBIGH TOWN LADIES
Denbigh Town Ladies have a new manager at the helm following the departure of Ellen Lawson.
Lawson, who took on the role in the summer of 2021 takes a step back but will remain with her junior groups
The former boss has a history with the side that stretches back to the origins of the Ladies side under the then-managment of John Clayton. One of the club’s pioneering figures for women’s football, Lawson moves on with an outstanding track record
The club has moved swiftly to ensure a smooth transition and are pleased to announce that Assistant Manager Aled Davies and Captain Carla Rizzi will take over as manager and assistant.
Davies has a wealth of experience in the game having managed the likes of St Asaph City and Llandyrnog United. He took over at Rhyl Ladies in 2019 before arriving at Central Park in 2021. He has worked as assistant to Lawson during that time and now takes over as manager
Rizzi was named captain in the summer and has a long-standing history with the side She has coaching experience at various junior levels and now balances her role on the pitch with one in the dugout as Davies’ assistant.
We would like to place on record our thanks to Ellen for a tremendous three years at the helm and wish Aled and Carla the best in their roles.

DENBIGH TOWN RESERVES
Denbigh Town Reserves fell to a cruel defeat at Central Park two weeks ago as they entertained Llay.
Hosting the Welly’s Reserves whilst the First Team made the journey the other way, Gruff Rogers’ brace and an effort from Serhad Kanli weren’t enough as Llay struck a 95th minute winner from the penalty spot
Missing both Tom Salisbury and Gabriel Hinchcliffe who were on duty with the First Team, Town named three changes to the side that faced TNS two weeks ago Rogers, Joe Mead and Serhad Kanli all came into the side
Town began well and took the lead on 16 minutes when Rogers’ cross from the left sailed into the back of the net. However, just nine minutes later the visitors were level via Kian Turton
In a battle at LL16 both sides searched for the lead going into the break and it was Denbigh who found it, Rogers again finding the net for his third of the campaign and second of the afternoon.
Much like the First Team Town took a 2-1 lead into the break against Llay and could eventually surrender that advantage Tom Wells restored parity five minutes into the half before grabbing his second 15 minutes later
Now chasing the game Denbigh piled forward and with 13 left to play Kanli finished inside the box well to make it 3-3 and secured his 5th goal in the league this season However, there was to be one final twist in the tale
Deep into stoppage time a ball into the Town box was adjudged to have struck a hand and despite the protestation of the home side the referee pointed to the spot. Wells stepped up for his third goal and three points for the visitors.
Town’s game a week later with Flint Mountain was postponed whilst Liam Nash’s lads faced Prestatyn this morning
