THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to Central Park this afternoon for tonight’s JD Cymru North game against Buckley Town.
I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Buckley players, coaching team, Committee and supporters.
This match should have been played on a Friday night at the end of November, but a wet waterlogged pitch meant this game being called off at lunchtime that day by the match referee Whilst areas of the pitch that day did appear ok, there were waterlogged patches, especially around the dugouts and corners, and we fully respected the referee’s decision. It was disappointing as I know Dewi and his lads were keen for the game to go ahead as were the Buckley team Off the pitch there is so much preparation going into holding a game with food and drink having already been ordered and programmes having been prepared and printed that it was frustrating all round
Last weekend was a momentous occasion for the Club. To reach the Quarter Finals of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time in our history is something else and our lads deserve so much credit for doing it in such an emphatic way. To win 7-1 at this stage of the Cup is really making a statement and we relish the challenge of meeting Llanelli Town in the next round This is due to be played on the weekend of 14/15th February so keep your diary free to come and give the lads your support that weekend.
Last weekend’s visitors Llanuwchllyn deserve credit for the way they and their supporters conducted themselves at the game Whilst there was a lot at stake, the game was played in a fair and spirited way and their supporters helped create a great atmosphere with their singing and cheering, aswell as helping to keep our bar volunteers busy throughout the afternoon.
It’s at games like these that we realise how much dependency we rely on our volunteers who are all invaluable in what they do in enabling games to go ahead From manning our gate, running our kitchen and bar, or stewarding at various points around the ground, these people are a godsend. If you feel you would like to help out in any way, please have a word with myself, Iwan or Ollie
We’re now entering the start of a busy Christmas and New Year period here at Central Park with us having four home games over the festive season After today’s game we welcome local rivals Ruthin at 1pm on Boxing Day for what is already looking like a six pointer for the winner as both teams are in need of rising up the league table Then on New Years Day we host Flint Mountain with a 2pm kick off. This is followed by another rearranged home game on Saturday 4th January with a 2pm kick-off.
The results at these four home games will shape the rest of our season and we would welcome your support at these games .
In the meantime, we at the Club would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for your support over the last twelve months and wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
THE GAFFER
Welcome back to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Cymru North league game against Buckley Town.
After the euphoria of last weekend’s Welsh Cup win, it’s back to League action again today at Central Park and the start of a busy Christmas period. After a run of three League defeats it was so important for us to win at Prestatyn 2-1 on Tuesday evening It was a horrible night for football with a strong swirling wind and some torrential rain on a pitch that only just passed a pitch inspection shortly before kick off The night didn’t suit our football and Prestatyn had a good game plan that frustrated us. It was a poor game to watch as there were lots of stops and starts and no real flow to the game Nevertheless, we took a deserved lead from Sam Duffy after which they had a good spell and equalised Our character shone through at the end with some strong defending and then Nathan Brown scored the winner with five minutes to go after a defensive lapse by the hosts. It was three welcome points.
Today, we’re more than aware that Buckley will be a tough fit opposition to face as they’re on a run of four league wins and stand in fourth position in the League . We do have the bonus of having had match action this month whereas Buckley have not played in December due to games being called off and the fixture schedule We had some epic encounters with Buckley last season and today’s is one were we want to get three more points
Last Saturday’s Welsh Cup game was special I’ll be honest and whilst I had great faith in our lads being the better team on paper and expected to win, it was the Cup, and we all know about giant killing upsets With myself having so many contacts in the Llanuwchllyn and Bala areas I’d been having plenty of stick off the locals in the build up to the game, so it was pleasing to put in such a comprehensive performance and come out easy winners
Credit must go to the whole team for the performance. However, I have to mention the hat-tricks from Nathan Brown and Owen Davies Both thoroughly deserved their rewards for their excellent contributions to the game Some of their goals that day were sublime, and Nathan also provided the assists for Owen’s three goals What a partnership.
Llanuwchllyn put us under real pressure straight from the kick off which we expected as that was their game plan We withstood this and by getting two early goals it helped settle us. To go into the break with a four goal lead just showed how dominant we were and I felt we could have scored more in that impressive first half
Sion Jones had to come off at half time as a precaution as he’d suffered a dead leg in the opening gambits. They started the second half as they started the first with them piling the pressure on us Our enforced change unsettled us a little and we allowed them to get one back This has been a common feature of our games , where we are slow starting halves and is something that myself, Matty and Simon are looking for us to address.
It wasn’t long before Owen Davies restored our four goal advantage and from then on we knew the game was won It allowed us to bring on three youngsters who had all played in our Reserves’ morning game at Prestatyn. Tom Salisbury and Morgan Fricker have made appearances before for the first team and done well and this time it was the turn of Serhad Kanli to make his debut All three did ok and it bodes well for the future of the squad
This afternoon we have Sion Jones having a late fitness test following his knock last weekend Other than that, we have a full squad available for selection Unfortunately, I’m away myself for the game so Matty is in charge in the dugout.
I’ll be watching the game via Ollie Beech who reports with our twitter feed – thanks Ollie for all you do with our social media. We’re the envy of many Clubs with everything you do for the Club.
Thank you for all your support this year, Nadolig Llawen and Blwyddyn Newydd da
TOWN TAKE THE DENBIGHSHIRE DERBY WITH LATE WINNER!
Prestatyn Town 1-2
Denbigh Town left it late to inflict further punishment on basement side Prestatyn Town as Nathan Brown bundled home with just moments to spare.
Sam Duffy haunted his former club with a first half strike before Oli Buckley netted a leveller, and it took until the 85th minute for a decider to come when Brown forced the ball home
Denbigh made one change to the XI as Calum Butler came in for Sion Jones whilst Ianto Jones appeared in the squad for the first time on the bench Serhad Kanli after making his debut on Saturday also retained a place
The first chance of the contest came after just four minutes when early pressure from Town saw a deep free-kick from Brown fall into a dangerous area before being turned behind by a defender. Prestatyn struggled to clear the resulting corner before it bounced around the penalty area and Owen Davies’ tame header was held
It was a game of few chances but the game did kick to life on 19 minutes. Brown swung in a corner which was half cleared before Duffy’s half volley flew just wide The former Prestatyn forward would however have another site at goal with much more success two minutes later A throw in from Davies found the forward who on the left corner of the box fired a low effort which the keeper couldn’t deny, as it trickled over the line
ItHowever, just two minutes later the hosts restored parity. A ball from Tom Weir found Buckley on the left who struck a brilliant volley into the top corner from an angle in a sensational effort
Denbigh looked to regain the lead but both sides found chances limited, Brown had a low shot saved after some good work from Iwan Roberts but neither goal was truly tested
Going into the break Butler found himself needed treatment and was forced off, being replaced by Mackenzie Stark
Town began the second period well with early pressure, Duffy found himself on the ball thrusting a sidewinder at goal that flew inches above the crossbar Six minutes after the restart Alfie Vaughan broke down the left before finding Iwan Roberts who fizzed an effort into the the arms of the goalkeeper.
Just after the hour mark Prestatyn almost took the lead when a corner found Weir at the back post but he couldn’t find the target, before a lengthy spell where both goals leading a quiet evening. The home side had more of the ball but just couldn’t find that key pass and were limited to pop shots that flew well wide of Aaron Jones’ net
The final ten minutes meant either side could win it late and it was Denbigh who began breaking forward. Keelan Williams made a terrific run down the right before finding Davies who got a touch to the ball in a foot race with the keeper, but was denied by the body of the custodian.
Two minutes later Williams’ quick throw to Davies saw the latter find Brown, one on his effort dragged just wide of the far post However, Brown’s persistence was rewarded with five to play when Davies beat the keeper and had shaped to shoot, a defender touched it away from the onrushing keeper and Brown nipped in to fire home into an empty net.
Five minutes were added in stoppage time where Williams’ effort from the right was denied by the keeper, whilst Prestatyn threw what they could at it But Denbigh held strong to grab their first win in the league in four games

HISTORY MADE AS TOWN REACH
QUARTER-FINAL
Denbigh Town made history last weekend by reaching the Quarter-Final of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time.
Hatricks from Owen Davies and Nathan Brown as well as a Iwan Roberts penalty secured our place in the last eight in a 7-1 win over Llanuwchllyn.
It sets up a Quarter-Final tie with Llanelli Town to be played on the weekend of February 14/15 at Central Park
Llanuwchllyn began the brightest testing Aaron Jones early but it was Town who took the lead via Brown with an excellent strike from the right of the box Davies made it two on 23 minutes before another strike each to take a 4-0 lead into the break.
The visitors pulled one back via John Evans from a corner but Davies completed his hatrick before Roberts and Brown made it six and seven. Serhad Kanli made his firstteam debut at just 16 whilst four Reserves in total also made it on to the pitch in a positive afternoon for Dewi Llion’s side.
It was the first time Denbigh had played at that stage since 1972/73 where they lost 40 to Oswestry Town and now enter uncharted territory in the last eight.

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back
THE OPPOSITION BUCKLEY TOWN
Ground: The Globe
Capacity: 1,700
Nickname: The Bucks
Founded: 1977
2023/24: 11th
Manager: Asa Hamilton
Football arrived in Buckley around 1860, complete with ‘jumpers for goalposts’ because the Lord of the Manor forbade permanent wooden posts on The Common.
The first ‘official’ club was the ‘Belmont Swifts Football Club’, then came the ‘Buckley Victoria Football Club’, which in turn morphed into ‘Buckley Engineers’ whose most famous team of ten colliers and one plumber picked up an impressive haul of silverware, including winning the Welsh Amateur Cup on three occasions
In 1887 ‘Buckley Football Club’ appeared and continued the town’s tradition of success, winning amongst other things, a double of the Wirral & District League and Pike Challenge Cup in 1898
Buckley continued to play right up to the 1920s, and in 1925 joined the Welsh League, North Division After a fallow period, in 1937 Buckley Town A F C won the North Wales Amateur Cup but by 1949 Buckley Wanderers & Buckley Rovers were the teams playing football in Buckley, with Rovers in the Welsh Leagues and Buckley Wanderers in the Welsh National League Division One After a couple of runners-up finishes, in the 55/56 season, Buckley Wanderers secured the League title, scoring over one hundred goals along the way
For season 60/61, Buckley Wanderers were joined in Division One by Rovers Wanderers grabbed yet another runners-up spot but Rovers had a tougher time, finishing ninth Having been relegated in the 63/64 season, and bouncing straight back up, the early seventies saw Rovers in the ascendancy, with a runner-up and third-place finish The 1976-77 season saw a turning point after both teams had finished in the bottom half, and in 1977 Rovers & Wanderers joined forces to become Buckley Football Club Finishing as runners-up in the Welsh National Premier Division in season 92/93, Buckley Town were elected to the Cymru Alliance League, the second tier of football in Wales
The club moved to a new purpose-built facility at Globe Way, and the noughties proved to be a hugely successful period, with the Club winning the NEWFA Challenge Cup seven times, the Cymru Alliance League Cup in 03/04 and ultimately being crowned Champions in 04/05 As managers came and went, Buckley Town set about restructuring the Club with the long term goal of making the Club the centre of community life, providing football activities and a pathway to the first team for all, with The Globe being continually improved and updated
On the playing side, the 14/15 season began well, with an overhauled team finishing fourth in the league 15/16 was less successful and 16/17 the club were relegated after finishing rooted to the bottom of the table Season 17/18 saw Dan Moore & Alan Edwards taking charge in May A poor start in the league was followed by success in cup competitions and then a growing level of confidence saw the team make progress in the league, culminating in a penalty by Aled Bellis in the last minute of the season’s final game to clinch the WNL Premier League title and promotion in front of a bumper crowd of over 600 at The Globe
The 18/19 season saw the team consolidate their position in the league, being as high as third at one point only to finish top half in eighth In season 19/20 an indifferent start was hampered by poor weather stopping any games at The Globe, but the side continued to pick up points away from home Over the next three seasons of league activity to 2022 (with 2020–21 completely abandoned owing to the COVID-19 pandemic) the team recorded a series of Cymru North mid–table finishes The team reached the final of the North East Wales Challenge cup in 2022 against Ruthin Town but were defeated 4–3 (with the winning goal scored in extra time) The club has since continued to be a secure side in the JD Cymru North
