Chairman’s Notes

Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North League game against CPD Bangor 1876, our last game of the season.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Bangor players, coaching team, Committee and supporters. It’s an opportune time to tell you that we have been successful in obtaining all the grant funding to cover the cost of our new changing rooms, kitchen and educational/function room. This is superb news, and we will look to demolish the current changing rooms in the week starting Monday 6th May. So, tonight is the last time the changing rooms will be used by Denbigh’s first team.

The new building will take around nine months to complete and we will continue to play all our home games here at Central Park. Temporary changing rooms and showers along with toilets for the public will be set up behind the stand in good time for the start of next season. We will look to set up a kitchen within the current Clubhouse so that hot and cold food can still be served.

It’s certainly an exciting time to be involved with the Club and it all follows on the success of all our teams both at Seniors and Juniors level over the last few seasons.

With regards to tonight’s game , this time last year both teams were vying for promotion from the Tier 3 Lock Stock Ardal North West League. It was a great contest which went right to the final day of the League and whilst we won the League, Bangor won the Tier 3 playoff final against Cefn Albion of the North East League and were also able to gain promotion to the Tier 2 JD Cymru North League.

This season sees Bangor will finish in fifth and ourselves in sixth position and it is testament to the management teams of both squads that the quality they showed in Tier 3 continues in Tier 2. Tonight’s encounter is sure to be a close one.

The weather has been against us with this fixture as it’s the third time of asking we’ve tried to host it. On both occasions the pitch has been declared unplayable as we had a few soft areas where the ball would not bounce, and players feet would have been sinking into the mud. This was sufficient to call the games off. This has been so frustrating for everyone linked to the Club, but there is nothing we can do about the weather.

There is hearsay that it is the Club that calls the game off. This is not the case as the FAW insist that a match cannot be called off without a recognised official visiting the ground and declaring a pitch unplayable. In both instances we so wanted the game to go head having spent so much time having prepared the pitch, buying food and drink for our café, and having programmes printed.

When the two teams met here at Central Park in February 2023, unfortunately it was marred with violent scenes off the pitch. This has seen both Clubs charged by the FAW for failing to control their supporters on the night and both ourselves and Bangor wish to avoid any such occurrences again tonight.

It is for this reason that there will be added security at the ground with us employing the services of qualified Security staff who will be operating throughout the ground. We are also grateful to Bangor officials for supplying stewards themselves to help with looking after the Bangor supporters.

We are segregating supporters with Denbigh’s supporters allocated to standing behind the goal at the Myddleton College part of the ground. CPD Bangor 1876 supporters will be taking up the area at the Denbigh High School end of the ground.

Home and away supporters will enter the ground through designated turnstiles.

Alcohol, drugs and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited from being brought onto the premises and security staff will be carrying out searches of bags and individuals to ensure we keep a safe environment at the game.

We all hope that all the action will be on the pitch tonight and look forward to an entertaining game.

Thanks to you all for your support this season. It’s really appreciated by everyone at the Club, and we look forward to welcoming you back after the close season.

Enjoy the game.

Manager’s Notes

Welcome to Central Park for tonight’s game against CPD Bangor 1876

Both teams have done well since their promo on last season, and it goes to show the standard of the Tier 3 Lock Stock Ardal North West League in that we’ve both more than held our own in this league.

We were all looking forward to the two games which had to be called off due to the weather. It was a real let down to both teams. There is nothing we can do about the weather, which has been shocking over the last few weeks. Thankfully, the weather has improved, and tonight’s game should definitely go ahead.

Last Friday night we narrowly lost to Flint Town Utd 2-1 here at Central Park. Flint have clinched promo on and have been duly rewarded for some great results and performances over the season. However, I thought we matched them for most of the game and it was a good advert for the Tier 2 JD Cymru North League as some class football was produced by both sides. I felt it goes to show how far we have come this season.

If you recall, we lost 3-0 at home to Flint in the Welsh Cup back in October. That day, Flint dominated the game, but on Friday evening it was much a closer affair, and the game could really have gone either way. Our last game before that was when we beat Llanidloes 7-0 away and that was a really pleasing performance in a game we dominated from the start. Owen Davies con nued his excellent run of form by nabbing a hat-trick and it was really special to see one of our longest serving players Billy Holmes ge ng a rare goal. It was good to get a win like this a er a difficult period which saw us pick up just one point in four games.

Tonight’s game does not have as much riding on it as would have a few weeks ago. Bangor were able to secure fi h posi on last weekend with a 4-0 win at Llanidloes and we can no longer catch them and will finish sixth in the league.

Overall, this is a posi on we as a management team are more than pleased a er our first season in the JD Cymru North. We’ve all learnt so much have so much now to build on for next season. There are areas we want to improve on, none more so than the number of goals we have conceded.

There’s been plenty of goals in our games this season with some great nights here at Central Park such as the crazy 6-5 win over Buckley, a breathtaking 3-2 win over Mold Alex. The Boxing Day game against Ruthin was special with 1145 spectators making for a fantas c atmosphere at the ground. To win the game with a last minute goal from our captain Paul Fleming was something else and made everyone’s Christmas.

Shon and the Commi ee have worked extremely hard over the season behind the scenes. I know how much effort as gone in towards ge ng applica ons submi ed for grants for the new changing rooms. The plans look so impressive and it’s going to add to the already great facili es we have here at Central Park.

On behalf of the players and management can I thank you all for the support you have given us this season. It’s been brilliant and we look forward to welcoming you back for season 2024/25

In the mean me, enjoy this evening’s game.

PREVIEW | Denbigh Town v Bangor 1876 Seeing Out The Season

Denbigh Town will see out their first season back in the JD Cymru North in a headline clash with Bangor 1876.

Two sides who've rivalled each other for the last two seasons, it almost feels fitting that the campaign ends with these two sides.

Form

Denbigh Town returned to Central Park on Friday night taking on league leaders Flint Town United. The Silkmen took a two goal lead before a late own-goal set up a tense finale, but the visitors held on to take a vital three points. It followed on from a superb 7-0 away win at Llanidloes earlier in April.

Bangor 1876 made it back to back wins on Saturday as they ran out convincing 4-0 winners away at Llanidloes. It was their second match in a row down in mid-Wales that saw them edge out Guilsfield two weeks previous 2-1. Saturday’s win saw Bangor secure a top-five finish in their first season in the JD Cymru North.

Head-to-Head

Our last meeting with Bangor came at Nantporth back in August, with the home side taking the points in a 2-1 victory. Sam Jones and Jamie Petrie netted for Bangor whilst Craig Pritchard pulled one back in the second half.

We met three times last season with Town taking all three victories, including two at Central Park. One came in the league as Denbigh pipped Bangor to the title with help from a 1-0 win via a Matthew Worrall strike, whilst the other match in Denbighshire ended 3-1 to Denbigh as skipper Paul Fleming scored a sensational hatrick on route to winning the Lock Stock Ardal Northern League Cup.

Ben Lockley could make his 37th appearance of the season on Tuesday, he has started every game of the campaign and is the only ever-present left in the squad.

The Denbigh Town Golden Boot is up for grabs as Nathan Brown leads (16) but is closely followed by Josh Lock (14) in all competitions. Brown leads in the league with 14.

This will be just the sixth league meeting between the two sides since 1929. We’ve shared seventeen seasons in the previous 131 years, with the first coming in 1893/94 in the old North Wales Coast League, the next two (1909/10, 1910/11) in the Combination League, three further seasons in the Coast League (1913/14, 1919/20, 1920/21) and the majority (1921-29) in the Welsh National League. After 1929 the two wouldn’t meet in the league until Bangor were relegated to the Cymru Alliance in 2018, 89 years later.

Total League Record: Denbigh Town Wins: 10, Bangor Wins: 20, Draws: 3.

REPORT |

Denbigh Town 1-2 Flint Town United Town lose out to title hopefuls

JD Cymru Premier elect Flint took three points in a closely fought battle at Central Park on Friday night.

Elliott Reeves and James Owen scored either side of the break before Daniel Harrison put the ball into his own net to set up a tense ending in LL16.

However, the Silkmen took the points to remain top of the table and relying on Holywell on the final day losing to relegated Llanidloes to secure promotion and the silverware.

As for Denbigh they stick in sixth and will need Bangor to drop points against Llanidloes tomorrow if they are to finish in the top five in their maiden JD Cymru North campaign. Manager Dewi Llion made one change to the starting XI that trounced Llanidloes 7-0 two weeks ago with Josh Lock returning from injury, and Max Cooke moving to the bench.

Flint knew a win was vital to maintain any hopes of clinching the JD Cymru North title to cap off their promotion to the top flight, and began at a great pace as top marksman Elliott Reeves drew Aaron Jones into a superb point blank save after just three minutes.

Reeves always a danger was at it again eight minutes later when he found space in the box before hitting an effort over the bar. Denbigh began to find rhythm themselves and on 18 minutes put pressure on the visitors goal, as great link-up play between Owen Davies, Nathan Brown and Josh Lock ssaw the latter hit it first time to call the Flint custodian into action for the first time with a one handed save to deny.

Denbigh encouraged by finding joy in the Flint final third moved forward once more five minutes later as Sion Jones launched a superb cross field pass finding Brown, the winger went through on goal but his effort was denied before Paul Fleming’s lunging follow-up flashed wide.

Goalkeeper Jones was a busy man in the first period as just after the half hour mark he was called upon once again, this time making a smart stop to deny Josh Jones. The visitors could have sensed that their title rivals Holywell had taken the lead in Porthmadog and were desperate now to break the deadlock. A corner was floated in before a sea of bodies saw the ball careered towards goal but Jones again was on hand.

Despite Denbigh’s resilience Flint finally broke the deadlock in stoppage time, Reeves with his 33rd goal of the campaign to send the visitors ahead at the break.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town 0-1 Flint Town United

Straight into the second half and the intentions seemed just the same for Flint who within two minutes were once again denied by the hands of Jones, Reeves again striking before his effort was tipped over the bar.

The chance didn’t prove to be the start of any onslaught however as both sides settled, and it was Denbigh next in line for a chance as Billy Holmes - making his 100th league appearance for the club - drove down the left flank before pulling it back to Fleming, his effort however sailed agonisingly wide.

This appeared to give Denbigh a spring in their step, seconds later Davies ran through on goal but before getting a shot away was denied by an incredible tackle from Joe Williams. Davies was in the thick of it five minutes later when he fed Lock who struck a low curling effort just wide of the upright.

However, despite the pressure Flint showed why they’ve battled all year at the top of the table as James Owen the Silkmen skipper doubled the advantage on 66 minutes.

However ten minutes later Denbigh were back in it. Lock crossed and Daniel Harrison was unable to clear, turning the ball into his own net to halve the defecit.

With the match in the balance Flint almost restored their two goal cushion only for another excellent stop from Jones once more. The referee indicated three added minutes with neither side adding to the scoreline and Flint took three points in a fiercely contested game.

Denbigh Town: A.Jones, S.Jones, Lockley, Parry-Jones, Holmes, Roberts, Gibbins, Lock, Fleming, Brown, Davies

Subs: Cooke, Cooper, Herbert, Lloyd

Brief History

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.

A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.

After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.

In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.

After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level.

Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.

In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.

After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.

Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.

In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football

Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season.

Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).

However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager

Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.

New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.

Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.

The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22.

The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.

Brief History continued
John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.

History

In April 2019, the then Bangor City FC Supporters’ Association held a meeting at which it decided to become incorporated as a Supporters’ Trust, following the example of a number of other supporters’ groups, including those running Chester FC and Wrexham AFC.

With a view to actively engaging with, and involving, the whole community, and working with partners who share its vision for a cohesive, sustainable and inclusive future for competitive football in Bangor, the Association applied to the Financial Conduct Authority to become a Supporters’ Community Mutual widely known by the description Supporters’ Trust or, in our case, a Society.

On 31 May 2019, it was informed that its application had been approved and the new Society started trading immediately. With a view to ensuring the continuity of competitive football of the highest possible standard in the city, and its catchment area, the Society began the process of establishing a new football club. Society members were invited to propose their names for the new football club and Bangor 1876 was the overwhelming choice of the membership. An application for membership was lodged with the Football Association of Wales and in mid-June Clwb Pêl-Droed Bangor 1876 Football Club was placed into the Gwynedd Football League (Tier 5).

The name Bangor 1876 is an acknowledgement and homage to the origins of organised football in Bangor, which can be traced back to a public meeting held in the Magistrates Room on 18 December 1876. Then, as now, the aim was to ensure the continuity of competitive football of the highest possible standard in the city and its catchment area.

Back in 1876, blue and red were adopted as the official club colours with subscriptions fixed at five shillings. Suitable accommodation was found when a field adjoining the old Friars School, subsequently known as Maes-y-Dref, was hired from a gentleman by the name of Thomas Williams.

History

Bangor 1876 also decided that the City of Bangor coat of arms be adopted as the official club crest. The choice of crest reflects the club’s commitment to serve the local community, and preserve its proud footballing heritage, whilst engaging with supporters from Bangor, the surrounding area, and further afield. The adoption of a blue and red colour scheme for the playing kit, with the home strip consisting of royal blue shirts with red trim, white shorts, and blue socks with red tops has historical connotations. The change strip is all red with blue trim.

Thanks to the partnership forged with Bangor University, The team currently plays its home matches on a 3G surface in the picturesque setting of the University’s Treborth Playing Fields, straddled between Thomas Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge and Robert Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge, on the banks of the Menai Strait.

During its first season the Club boasted a 100% record, winning the last-ever Gwynedd League championship. Despite the season being curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the team scored 115 goals conceding only nine. In the 2021-22 season, the Club played in the Premier Division of the North Wales Coast League (West). The Club once more set a number of goal scoring records scoring 139 and conceding 19.

At the end of the season, the Football Association of Wales' National League Board chose the Club to fill a vacancy at tier 3 level in the Welsh Football Pyramid, consequently the Club now plays in the Lock Stock Ardal League North West.

In season 2022-2023, the Club finished runners up in the Lock Stock Ardal League North West to Denbigh Town. They went on to win 4-2 after extra time against Cefn Albion of the Lock Stock Ardal League North East in the Tier 3 Play Off Final to gain promotion to the Tier 2 JD Cymru North League for season 2023-2024
