Board Room Chairman’s Notes Welcome to Central Park for this evenings JD Cymru North League game against CPD Porthmadog. I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Porthmadog players, coaching team, Commi ee and supporters. It was frustra ng for Dewi and his lads for two of their recent games having to be called off. The first was an away game at Llanidloes and then our home game against Gresford when Storm Jocelyn hit us. It is so difficult at this me of year for Clubs to host games when the weather is too wet or too icy. Groundstaff do as much as they can to allow games to be played but the elements are against us so o en. An FAW official approached me at the New Years Day match at Ruthin to ask my opinion on summer football. The topic is s ll on the FAW’s agenda as they see the disrup on caused by so many games being called off. Yes, summer football would see games played on me, but it would hamper Clubs plans on doing annual maintenance on their pitches which is tradi onally done through the summer months. I can’t see the FAW changing their plans in the immediate future , but it is certainly something that will have to be seriously considered if weather condi ons con nue to affect the running of the season’s games. Our new Changing Room Building Project is taking up a lot of my focus at the moment. Having obtained planning permission just before Christmas, we have now secured funding for 50% of the cost of the build. I am ac vely now approaching other ins tu ons throughout Wales who can help fund the rest of the project. Next week I am mee ng the main building, electrical and plumbing contractors we have selected to plan the way forward as to when the work can start and put in place a diary of how the build will progress. We are aiming to start the work at the end of this season which will be early May by the me all our fixtures for all our teams will have been completed. As I have men oned before, it is an exci ng me to be involved with the Club as we look to enhance our facili es and with all our Senior and Junior teams doing so well in their respec ve Leagues. If you feel you have some me available to help the Club off the field in whatever form, please contact myself or Iwan who can give you more details as to the posts we have available. In the mean me, let’s see our lads get the three points tonight. We need a win a er last Saturday’s drubbing against Mold in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup. So, its no Cup Finals this season for us and we just have to now look to consolidate on our League posi on. Enjoy the game. Shon Powell Chairman

Managers Office Manager’s Notes Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North league game against Porthmadog. It will be good to get back into ac on a er last Saturday’s game when we lost 5-1 in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup semifinal against Mold Alex. It was a difficult a ernoon to say the least. A er a decent first half it all went belly up in a most disappoin ng second half. I felt we were a good match for Mold in the first half. Both teams had chances and despite Mod going ahead mid way through the first half Josh Lock equalised for us only for us to let in a sloppy goal just on the half me whistle. Straight a er the break we conceded another two goals, and the game was gone. Then we had Ryan Kershaw ge ng a straight red card and shortly a er Mold got their fi h. The brighter side of things saw our three recent signings all making an appearance at Mold and all three did well. Owen Davies who has come here from TNS on loan un l the end of the season looked a threat up front with his pace and had two shots just off target. Kyle Cooper, a young defender with talent has joined from Llandudno and looked very composed in his s nt on the pitch. Dion Gibbins is a lad I have known since my me at Bala Academy and has matured into a powerful midfield player and I was pleased to get his signing from Cefn Albion . l’ve also been watching Jimmy McHarrie for some me and he joined us earlier this week from Airbus. He’s a quality young keeper and will push Aaron Jones in a posi on where we have not had a real deputy all season. The last couple of months have been frustra ng with five games called off due to the weather , three at home and two away. It’s upset our momentum and this has definitely shown in some stu ering performances over December and January. Our last game was here at Central Park against a young energe c Llandudno team . We drew with them 2-2 in early December on their new 4G pitch, when we weren’t really at our best. The return fixture was another story as we played some great football and thoroughly deserved our 4-1 win . The only downside I felt was le ng in an early sloppy goal and this has happened so many mes this season – us star ng poorly and le ng the opposi on get an early goal and so pu ng us on the back foot. Jason Foulkes and Dan Clarke have both le us for St Asaph during the window. Both were key players in our double winning season. Jason, we knew would be concentra ng on his cricket over the next few months and so would not be able to concert his efforts to our training and matches over the rest of the season. Dan is a local youngster with bags of skill, who was keen to get more matches under his belt and was finding limited playing me with ourselves. Striker Tom Weir has le for his home town of Prestatyn as they look to rebuild with their new Chairman and Management team having taken over recently. Ryan Kershaw le the Club a er last weekend’s game. Porthmadog have had a managerial change just before Christmas with Craig Papirnyk standing down and Steve Williams coming into the hotseat. Results haven’t gone Port’s way in recent games and they have slipped into the relega on zone. Nevertheless, we can’t be complacent tonight and with a keen compe on for places in our squad , I’m looking for three points tonight. Dewi Llion Jones Manager

REPORT | Llandudno U23 0-2 Denbigh Town Reserves Town up to 4th with away victory Denbigh Town Reserves leapfrogged Llandudno on Sunday with a 2-0 away win, taking Liam Nash’s side from 6th to 4th in the process. Goals from Kristian Pierce and Andy Thomas secured a vital three points and revenge for the loss to the Seasiders at Central Park earlier this season. Nash made three changes to the side that beat Porthmadog eight days previous as Pierce replaced the suspended Rhys Lloyd, whilst Gruf Rogers and Josh Griffiths returned to the side. It took Town just six minutes to break the deadlock when Pierce found the back of the net in a quick start for Denbigh after latching on to a defensive error from the home side. Both sides tussled to find the second of the afternoon but neither side could find it and went into the break with a goal between them. Half-Time: Llandudno U23 0-1 Denbigh Town Reserves A quick start was important to both sides coming out from the break and within eight minutes of the re-start Town doubled the advantage. Geth Rogers fed the ball to Thomas who finished well in what was a crucial goal. Llandudno had to throw themselves at it and Denbigh added fresh legs with a quadruple substitution just after the hour mark, but the home side couldn’t break through and Town picked up a big three points in one of their performances of the season. The win moves Town up to fourth, ten points adrift of top spot but with a game in hand over TNS, four points behind second-placed Connah’s Quay and a point off third-placed Airbus. Town are next in action on Saturday with a trip to basement side Buckley Town.

REPORT | Mold Alexandra 5-1 Denbigh Town (WBS League Cup) Town crash out in Flintshire Denbigh Town’s hopes of reaching the Northern Final of the WBS League Cup were halted on Saturday with a 5-1 thumping at Mold. Josh Lock’s first-half effort was merely a consolation as Danny Warren hit four and Joe Ormrod opened the scoring. Dewi Llion named an unchanged starting XI from the 4-1 win against Llandudno two weeks ago, whilst naming Kyle Cooper and Dion Gibbins in the squad for the first time. The first chance of the contest fell to the hosts as as a cross from the left was met by the head of Warren, but he somehow couldn’t find the target Denbigh responded with their first chance of the game when good work from Town found Matthew Worrall who’s effort deflected wide. The resulting corner came in from Nathan Brown and Dan Parry-Jones met it, but put the ball wide. Chances continued to flow and on 17 minutes Craig Pritchard did well after receiving the ball short from a Brown corner, he dashed inside before hitting the ball across the face of goal and inches wide. Less than a minute later Worrall was played through, his touch let him down and as he recovered he attempted to round the keeper but an onrushing defender was able to nudge the ball away for a corner. Paul Fleming was next up to test the goalkeeper with a tame effort that was safely gathered, but Mold found themselves in the Town box on 24 minutes as a long throw causes confusion before Rhys Nash who drew Aaron Jones into a low stop.

On 27 minutes the deadlock was broken. Poor defending from Denbigh led to Ormrod having the freedom of the box to smash home as the ball came in from the left.

Now Denbigh had to answer the Mold challenge, and on half an hour almost immediately came back into it. Billy Holmes, having another superb game, crossed from the left for Worrall who couldn’t get a clean connection, it fell back to Fleming who’s effort from close rang was snuffed out. Ryan Kershaw’s shot from distance flashed wide with ten minutes of the half to play before Mold almost doubled the lead, Warren having a shot well covered by Jones. With five to go Josh Lock had the all-important leveller, as he made a break just left of centre into the box before firing at goal, if took a nick off a defender to wrong foot the goalkeeper and draw parity. However, the fightback lasted just three minutes. A long throw into the Town box found Warren to bundle the ball home for his first of the afternoon. Half-Time: Mold Alexandra 2-1 Denbigh Town Within two minutes of the re-start Mold made it three, Warren running through to finish past a hapless Jones. Seconds later it was four, Warren again finishing to put the tie to bed early on. Denbigh looked to continue fighting back, Pritchard looked lively and hit one over the bar from range on 54 minutes. Dewi Llion handed debuts to Cooper and Gibbins replacing Fleming and Keiron Roberts with 35 to play. Pritchard continued trying to get his side into it, doing well down the right as he cut inside and forced the Mold custodian into a save. A minute later the hill Denbigh had to climb became a mountain. Ryan Coney had the ball in the middle of the park for Mold before a rash challenge from Kershaw saw him sent off. A fracas ensued taking several minutes to calm down, leaving Town with ten men. Almost immediately after play resumed Mold made it five through Warren once more to heap further misery on the visitors. Owen Davies was added to the frame and was a bright spark in his 17-minute cameo, with a couple of shots just flashing wide whilst Town had a penalty claim waved away with five to go as Pritchard was fouled in the box.

The final whistle eventually blew and Town’s maiden entry in the WBS League Cup came to a screeching halt. Denbigh Town: A.Jones, Roberts, Lockley, Parry-Jones, Holmes, Lock, Kershaw, Brown, Fleming, Pritchard, Worrall Subs: Cooper, S.Jones, Gibbins, Hansen, Davies, Pierce Referee: Mark James Attendance: 237

Brief History

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.

A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.

After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.

In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.

After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level. Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.

In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.

After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.

Brief History continued John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.

Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.

In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football

Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season. Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).

However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.

New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.

Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.

The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22. The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.

History Porthmadog Football Club, one of the oldest in Wales, was founded in 1872 .They were North Wales League champions in 1902/03 and reached the final of the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1905 -06 but had to wait until 1937-38 before they gained another championship. The '50s, '60s and '70s were highly successful decades for Port. The Welsh Amateur Cup was won in 1955/56 and 1956/57. The arrival of Mel Charles heralded more success. Port were league champions in three successive seasons between 1966 and 1969. Also in 1966, they played against Swansea in the Welsh Cup at the Vetch, before a crowd of 10,941. In the seventies, they were twice champions and topped the Welsh Alliance in1989/90. This secured Port a place in the newly formed Cymru Alliance (1990). In 1992, Port became inaugural members of the League of Wales.

Thanks to a late surge, the team finished in a creditable 9th place in their first season. This was largely thanks to free scoring striker Dave Taylor. Dave went on, in his second season, to become the league's top scorer as well as Europe’s highest. During his spell at the club, he scored 62 goals in 66 games. Despite the 70 goals netted by Dave Taylor and Marc Lloyd-Williams, in the 1993-4 season they finished in 11th spot. Port did, however, break another record - the highest League of Wales attendance. A crowd of 2,500 came to see Bangor clinch the league title. The 1994/95 season started with a new manager, following the surprise decision to replace Meilir Owen. Ex-Wales International, Ian Edwards became manager but, after a good start, the team slipped down the table and he was also replaced. Things went from bad to worse after Mickey Thomas, ex-Man Utd Wrexham and Wales, took charge. The team came close to being relegated. For the 1995/96 season Colin Hawkins was promoted to the manager's job. The club nearly folded because of serious financial trouble and a disaster was averted thanks to the hard work of the directors who re-launched the club as a limited company and £10,000 was raised through the sale of shares. In 1996/97, with the financial situation improved, the team had a fine start to the season. No home game was lost until the New Year and, when champions Barry came to the Traeth, it was second against fourth. One of Port's most influential players was Paul Roberts. Before leaving the club to join Wrexham for £10,000, he had played for Wales Under-21 and was the league's leading scorer. After Paul's departure Port slipped to tenth place but still lifted the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup. In the 1997/98 season, Port's time in the League of Wales came to an end following a poor run of form towards the end of the season. Knowing what has happened since in this league, it is a cause for amazement that Porthmadog lost their WPL status despite ending the season in 4th place from the bottom. Back in the Cymru Alliance, things went down hill after a good start. But some pride was restored as they won the League Cup. They could only manage 5th spot in 1999-2000 despite a run of victories after Viv Williams had succeeded Colin Hawkins. Viv, together with assistant-manager Osian Roberts, re-built the team and 2002-03 proved to be one of the most successful in the history of the club. Every home game was won and the only two away defeats came after Port had already gained promotion. They returned to the WPL with a 19 points advantage over their nearest rivals. Port also lifted the League Cup and North Wales Coast Challenge Cup. Under the management of Viv Williams and Osian Roberts, the club took the step back into the WPL and finished season 2003/04 in 12th position. In the following three seasons, they finished in 11th place without any relegation worries. In 2006/07, the club reached the semifinal of the League Cup. By this time, Osian Roberts had become the manager with Viv Williams assisting. For the greater part of the season, the dark cloud of the FAW’s unreasonable punishment, for racist remarks by one individual, cast its shadow over the club. A satisfactory conclusion to this saga was not achieved until the club had taken the matter to an independent sports tribunal and this provided a fair hearing and, at last, justice. With the departure of Osian to a senior coaching position at the FAW and Viv deciding to call it a day after 7 years at the helm the club entered a period of uncertainty and results consequently suffered. During the three seasons 2007/10 the club had four different managers with Clayton Blackmore being dismissed after a few months and Viv Williams returning to take temporary charge helping the club to retain its WPL status. Paul Whelan became the third manager to fall by the wayside to be replaced by the experienced Tomi Morgan. Though the club once more narrowly retained its WPL place in 2008/09 league reorganisation meant that six clubs were relegated in 2009/10 and this time there was no hiding place for Port as they were demoted to the Cymru Alliance. Following relegation Gareth Parry succeeded Tomi Morgan as manager and served for four seasons with a 4th place finish in 2011/12 proving his best but there was also a good Welsh Cup run in 2013/14, reaching the quarter final. Craig Papirnyk became manager in 2014/15 and served the club ably for 5 seasons, until his resignation in April 2019. The club finished in 4th place in 2016/17 but the best performance came in his final season, 2018/19,when they finished in 3rd place. For the 2019/20 season Sion Eifion Jones was promoted to the manager’s seat, following a successful time with the Reserves – but following much change at the start of this season & results not being acceptable, the club decided to bring Craig Papirnyk back as manager in the hope of staving off the relegation threat for this historic club. Unfortunately, COVID brought an early end to this season & Port were relegated to the 3rd tier of the Welsh pyramid. It was with great joy to note that an instant return to the Cymru North was made by the club, as they celebrated promotion through the playoff system by beating Caersŵs by a scoreline 5-0 at Barmouth’s Wern Mynach stadium In May 2022. It was an unforgettable day for everyone involved with the club & a positive end to what had been a tough promotion battle all season with Mold Alex, who were eventually promoted as league champions.
