Trying to delve into the minds of the superuber rich is not an easy task, in fact it’s alien. Yachts of this proportion are ultimately about status, and is there anything else on this planet that could surpass the status symbol of owning a giga yacht? The top ten largest yachts in the world today, ( the top 5 are listed below), are all owned by males. And there’s definitely a “mine’s bigger than yours” competition, or syndrome, out there amongst these owners. We all know what they say about a man and the size of his car. So what then, is to be said about the man in relation to the size of his yacht?!

Exceeding 100 metres (328 feet) in length, typically housing five decks above the water line and two below, incorporating features such as helicopter hangars, indoor swimming pools and miniature submarines...these are just some of the common characteristics of the new breed of the Super Yacht. ‘Giga’ yachts of these proportions are still quite rare, but they’re becoming more and more common, especially with the new breed of ‘cash-rich billionaires’.

Love them or hate them, we’ve all seen them and no doubt have asked ourselves the same question-“Why?” It’s not like they’ve purchased these vessels to accommodate for a growing family because as you know, no matter the size of the yacht, the maximum number of charter guests, allowed by law, is 12. And it’s definitely not about flying under the radar, because if that was the case they’d buy a submarine.

It’s hard to imagine that you can have ten times more fun on a 500 foot boat than on a 50-footer, but you can almost certainly invite more friends along...Throw away your measuring tape, as the trend in super- and megayachts is toward the over-the-top and out-of-thisworld.
