Characters Hayao Miyazaki originally conceived the characters Satsuki and Mei as a single girl. He wanted to add suspense to the latter half of the film, and he felt it wouldn’t work with just a single girl, so he split her into two separate girls. The original girl had features of both Satsuki and Mei, and was 7: halfway between the ages of Satsuki (10) and Mei (4).

Setting The story took place In Tokorozawa City, Saitama prefecture. Miyazaki lives in Tokorozawa, which is now a bedroom community of Tokyo. He rediscovered the beauty in the Japanese landscape, and up until then he did not love Japan. He wanted to have the setting take place before television, where the children would be playing outside and therefore came up with the 1950’s Japan. He intentionally avoided tr adi tional Japanese folklore, and instead drew from his own childhood experiences.

Setting This story takes place in Japan during the Muromachi Period, which is considered to be the transition period between the medieval period and the early modern period. It is notable that the power of the shoguns greatly declined in this period. The landscapes which appear in Princess Mononoke are said to have been inspired by the ancient forests of Yakushima, off Kyūshū, and the mountains of ShirakamiSanchi in northern Honshū.

Setting The Spirit Realm is largely similar and directly linked to the Human World. It has a substantially less-polluted environment and less-advanced technology. In exchange for their lack of technology, some inhabitants of the Spirit Realm are known to be capable of practicing magic, as well as exhibit various other, inhuman powers.
