The Social Pro File

S

ocial media, one of the biggest hits of the 21 st century. The internet has 3.17 billion users of which there are 2.3 billion active social media users, it’s a big business! The most popular and known social media platforms are of course Facebook with 1.71 billion users, Instagram with 400 million and Twitter with 320 million accounts. The numbers are staggering, but what is the point of social media? People of all ages can hop online and share photos, messages and their opinion with the world in just one click. It’s convenient and has become part of people’s everyday lives. It also can be used as a great platform to promote yourself, a brand or a talent. Social media accounts such as LinkedIn with 450 million users and YouTube with over a billion users are clear examples of this. The world is very competitive in every aspect in this day and age; therefore, being able to promote and share your work and lifestyle in this way has huge benefits. But how does social media weight up with reality? I think most are guilty of stretching

Sophie says.....

Social media psychology by Sophie Fitzjohn.

the truth on social media either by filtering the life out of a photo or simply by taking up all the storage on our phones with identical photos of the same selfie, scene or object, to achieve the ‘perfect’ shot. It’s become a competition of how many ‘likes’ ‘shares’ or ‘comments’ someone gets which determines

‘Portraying the perfect lifestyle’

their popularity or rank in society, it’s a new form of social acceptance but it’s really everyone’s lives through rose tinted glasses From the perfect holiday shot, to the posh restaurant snap and the staged family photo. No one’s lives are as seamless, airbrushed or sad to say, as happy as they come across in that one single photo posted on their social media. However, it’s a way to portray the life and image you wish people to see, perception perfection at its best. It’s great to connect with family, friends and loved ones however being more authentic with our posts would lead to less disappointment and comparison when reality isn’t so great. It should be a log of the good and maybe not so good times that we wish to share with the world. After all everyone faces hard times, as well as amazing triumphs at some points during their lives, and posting both aspects of life would relieve the pressure of portraying the ‘perfect lifestyle’, and normalise people’s perceptions of others.

I think that people just have this core desire to express who they are. And I think that’s always existed. Mark Zuckerberg Celebrating its 10th anniversary lasy year, Twitter announced it was looking into new measures to prevent abuse and “wage war on the trolls.” These guidelines better be implemented soon, as the app’s popularity continues to decline, and millenials have already moved on to more visuallydriven apps, such as Instagram and Snapchat.

High Line

A NewYork revisited...

T

he High Line (also known as High Line Park) is a 1.45-mile-long (2.33 km) elevated linear park created on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line, in New York City. Led by landscape architecture firm James Corner Field Operations, the design team re-imagined the existing infrastructure as a “living system” that draws from multiple disciplines (including landscape architecture, urban design, and ecology) and has become an icon in contemporary landscape architecture. Inspired by the 3-mile-long Promenade plantée (tree-lined walkway), a similar project in Paris completed in 1993, the High Line has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway and rails-to-trails park. Its success has pushed cities nationwide to re-imagine obsolete infrastructure as public space. l Route The High Line Park is built on the disused southern portion of the West Side Line running to the Lower West Side of Manhattan. It runs from Gansevoort Street – three blocks below 14th Street – in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea, to the northern edge of the West Side Yard on 34th Street near the Javits Convention Centre. A short stub above Tenth Avenue and 30th Street is still unopened as of September 2014, but will open by this year. The park gets nearly 5 million visitors annually.

Cookware Exclusive...

Cooking by design Marie Guerlain brings home new wares by Dennis Sterne.

‘F

ood glorious food’- The song that springs to mind as I race across London. Living in green belt however, certainly has its benefits, one of which is not rushing around. I was reminded of this while prompting a cab driver to take the fastest route to the home of Marie Guerlain – granddaughter to the Guerlain perfume and make-up dynasty. Upon meeting Marie, I took a moment to wonder whether Google actually ages people, Marie appears notably younger than her Google image search. A kinder face too. Perhaps some expert make-up application is at play here. I detect a subtly apprehensive but calm nature and ponder how the camera can lie after-all. A ponderous moment indeed for a photographer who enjoys portraiture. My purpose - to get to know Marie and her Luxury Ondine Cookware range in all of 15 minutes as her diary is full today and I was a little late. My intention - to play on a little

persuasion to win extra time. Time that some interviews make virtually impossible to get to the heart of the matter. Let’s say that the jury is out as to whether persuasion or Marie’s patience aided me this time. Perhaps a little of both. Her accompanying PR is a friend of mine so I felt reasonably triumphant. I was both surprised and impressed by the discovery that Marie’s culinary beginnings began between the age of eight and nine. Certainly, not an age when I would allow my own children to run riot in the kitchen. A quest to impress her family it seemed. Winning the heart of a mother or father proves to be a common and legendary sure fire motivation for so many. I am completely touched too by the idea that the love of food and cooking could stem from seeking love. I suspect that this story could be more sweet than savoury and then Marie tells me that her signature dish was meringue. ‘That’s a difficult dish to pull off ’, I say. Although she qualifies that dessert was not the limit to her cooking u

u skills. She then tells me that she bakes cookies every week for her children in order to avoid sugar, gluten and any added preservatives. That’s two sweet over one savoury – I’m keeping count. With any product, and especially luxury products, I’m looking for the unique selling point. Why do people spend more on anything, other than to buy into a dream or stay faithful to a brand? Surely the discerning consumer at some juncture requires more that glitz, glamour and even longevity. If it’s authenticity, then against what and how is it measured? Before I ask these questions, Marie tells me that cookware can so often be toxic. Most people are aware that what comes with technological advancement is certainly not any guarantee for safe consumption in the kitchen. Attention to detail and a five-year product development has brought about a range of cookware that is non-toxic and indeed nonporous. She applied her own design handwriting to the product and I am completely sold on her passion and attachment to the business of function and application from product to user. An idea that product and people together should have meaning. While Marie cooks with healthy eating in mind, she says that following food fashion is not on her radar. The Ondine cookware range is an enlightening discovery and an engaging story. I was amazed to learn that the meaning of Ondine comes from Marie’s middle name. ‘It is French, it means to dine’ she says. The revelation genuinely left me speechless. Marie smiles a sweet smile. In some way, it suggests her parents were psychic or have very high hopes at least. My hopes remain high for Ondine. The collection is hand made from titanium and brass. Craftsmanship, detailing and the engraving reflect its price point and give rise to its availability at Britain’s favourite department store, Harrods.

Tailoring in film Kingsman - A movie to inspire your wardrobe.

S

avile Row makes a very special appearance in Kingsman: The Secret Service, the critically acclaimed film by Matthew Vaughn, which was released in the UK 2015. The inspiration for Kingsman – a tailoring house that acts as a covert command base for a secret society of spies – was the iconic Savile Row tailor and founding Savile Row Bespoke Association member Huntsman. The famous tailor’s splendid interiors at 11 Savile Row can also be seen in numerous scenes in the film. Filming at Huntsman brought back happy memories for Director Vaughn who first visited the Savile Row stalwart as a teenager with his mother to purchase his first suit Huntsman’s distinct influence on the film also worked to inspire a range of luxury clothing, which is available exclusively through the leading online retailer Mr Porter. Roubi L’Roubi, Creative Director at Huntsman, said: “We were delighted that Huntsman was the inspiration for the tailors in the Kingsman film and were more than happy to make our shop available for the filming of scenes. “There are a number of similarities between the fictional tailors at Kingsman and their

real life counterparts at Huntsman. In particular, both are committed to the highest standards of sartorial elegance and traditional craftsmanship. “However, it is important also to stress the differences. As far as I’m aware, the Huntsman shop is not a front for a clandestine organisation of spies!” Mr Porter. MR PORTER and director Mr Matthew Vaughn have created a bespoke collection from Ms Arianne Phillips’ costume design for Kingsman: The Secret Service. The focus is on British heritage, with cloths sourced from traditional mills and hand-picked collaborations with classic brands.

Gate minds The entrepreneurial spirit goes global care.

B

ill Gates - most certainly a notable figure in our lifetime, and not just for the development of Microsoft. These days he has more to do and say. There’s fruit to bare - take inspiration from a true modern day progressive. He will be 62 this year and doesn’t look like stopping. Bill and Belinda Gates Foundation Over the past three decades, the world has made tremendous progress toward the eradication of polio. In 1988—when wild polio virus was present in more than 125 countries and paralyzed 350,000 people every year, primarily young children—the World Health Assembly set a goal to eliminate the disease, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was launched. Since then, immunization efforts have reduced the number of cases by more than 99 percent, saving more than 13 million children from paralysis. India stopped the virus in 2011, and today, polio is found only in Afghanistan,

Pakistan and Nigeria. In 2016, there were fewer than 40 cases reported globally. Climate change Gates weighed into one of the most fraught climate change debates by calling for a rethink of how rich countries can help poorer nations deal with the effects of global warming. The billionaire philanthropist - ranked the world’s richest man - says a new $10bn Green Climate Fund about to start handing out millions of dollars must focus on the 1.5bn people in poor farming families who face some of the biggest risks from a changing climate. He urged the South Korea-based fund to adopt the “super clear metrics” his Gates Foundation uses to assess aid requests and look hard at funding agricultural crop research. He also questioned the long-term impact of some of the first projects the fund is looking to support with the money that 37 countries have pledged for it since it was founded at UN talks seven years ago.

The original Jesse J Rights and divertsity, by Fiona Snailham.

A

ttendees at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity expect a line-up of eminent speakers and this year’s event did not disappoint, with renowned civil rights activist Jesse Jackson topping the bill. Reverend Jackson used his speech as a platform to remind the audience of the power of advertising to push boundaries, asking its professionals to avoid ‘the limitations of racial branding’ and use their influence for the common good. Such a call to arms is hardly surprising, given the speaker’s background in civil rights activism. Born on 8 October 1941, Jackson lived his early years under segregation laws and graduated from Sterling High School in Greenville, South Carolina. A talented athlete, he declined an offer to play baseball for the Chicago White Sox in order to take up a football scholarship at the University of Illinois. Transferring to North Carolina

A&T after two semesters, he graduated with a sociology degree in 1964. Rev. Jackson was ordained in 1968, having deferred further studies to focus on his work with the civil rights movement. His Master of Divinity Degree was awarded in 2000. Jackson began campaigning for desegregation in his teens and was one of the ‘Greenville 8’ arrested for a sit-in protest at an all-white library in 1960. A full-time organiser for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) by 1965, Dr Martin Luther King was impressed by Jackson’s passionate commitment and gave him a leading role in Operation Breadbasket, an organisation devoted to improving economic conditions of black communities across the USA. Following King’s assassination, Jackson founded People United to Save (later Serve) Humanity and the National Rainbow Coalition, focusing on social and political development for black communities. The two groups merged in u

Twice nominated as presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, Rev Jackson has acted as an international diplomat in a variety of sensitive situations. He has received international acclaim for his civil rights activism and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000.
