Artificial Intelligence

A

rtificial intelligence (AI) is a technical term referring to artefacts used to detect contexts or to effect actions in response to detected contexts. Our capacity to build such artefacts have been increasing in current years, and with it the impact they have on our society as a whole. In the past decade, and particularly the past few years, have been transformative for artificial intelligence. 2007 was the significant year for the beginning of the (AI) era, with the introduction of smartphones. For decades, even prior to the inception of the term—AI has created both fear and excitement as humanity contemplates creating machines in our image; however with that in mind, AI has been around for much longer than most of us actually think. It has been a standard part of the industrial repertoire since at least the 1980s. AI is here now, available to and benefiting all of us. However its consequences for our social order are not only not understood, but have until recently have barely even been the subject of study. Also with advances

Sophie says.....

A good and bad connotation by Sophie Fitzjohn. in robotics, AI is entering our physical spaces in the form of autonomous vehicles, weapons, drones, and domestic devices, including “smart speakers” and even games consoles. We are becoming surrounded by pervasive automated perception, analysis, and increasingly action as a result of continued AI development. Artificial Intelligence is core to some of the most successful companies in history in terms of market capitalization. For example, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon. Along with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), AI has revolutionized the ease with which people from all over the globe can access knowledge, credit, and other benefits of contemporary global society. Having such access has helped lead to a massive reduction in global inequality and extreme poverty; by allowing farmers to know fair prices, best crops, and giving them accessibility to accurate weather predictions. AI has its positive impacts but also its negatives. As the president of Microsoft voiced; as intelligent technology raises issues that go to the heart of fundamental human

rights protections like privacy and freedom of expression. This is a concern; however AI has been and is an incredible force of both economic growth and individual empowerment. With it we are able to know, discover, learn and do things that would have been unimaginable even fifty years ago. AI is already changing society at a faster pace than we anticipated, but at the same time it is not as novel or unique in human experience as we are often led to think. Artefactual entities, such as writing and language, corporations and governments, telecommunication and oil, have previously extended our capacities and altered our economies drastically; and disrupted our social order as a result—generally though not universally for the better. The evidence that we are on average better off for our progress is ironically perhaps the greatest threat we currently need to master: sustainable living and reversing the collapse of biodiversity. AI is developing rapidly and time will tell whether we get the balance of this complex topic right.

Quotes - Robots will do everything better than us. Elon Musk

The thing that’s going to make artificial intelligence so powerful is its ability to learn, and the way AI learns is to look at human culture. Dan Brown

t is now 50 years since mankind stepped onto the moon and changed history forever. On this golden anniversary, OMEGA is looking back on its own special role aboard Apollo 11 and the Moonwatch legacy that still inspires the brand today. Cycling

Cylcing note The blunt truth is that though daily exercise like cycling will improve your cardiovascular health, lift your mood, and boost your fitness, you can easily pedal an hour a day and not lose a pound. ... With the right adjustments to your riding (and fueling) routine, you can pedal off unwanted weight.

fresheyecourses.com

On your bike The positive affects of powering up your bike.

C

ycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level. Cycling for health and fitness It only takes two to four hours a week to achieve a general improvement to your health. Cycling is: l Low impact – it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise. l A good muscle workout – cycling uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal. l Easy – unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget. l Good for strength and stamina – cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness. l As intense as you want – cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout.

l A fun way to get fit – the adventure and

buzz you get from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or require special times or places. l Time-efficient – as a mode of transport, cycling replaces sedentary (sitting) time spent driving motor vehicles or using trams, trains or buses with healthy exercise.

Cycling can help to protect you from serious diseases. www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au

Lotus is Hyper L

otus is no newcomer to electric cars, having produced the chassis for the original Tesla Roadster. The British sports car company unveiled its own electric sports car, the Evija, which it says will be the most powerful car on the market with electric motors producing 1,973 horsepower. The company didn’t list its battery size, but says it will be able to charge fully in nine minutes. With the Evija, the brand is climbing away from the attainable sports cars it currently produces—including the Elise, on which Tesla based its original Roadster—back toward

fresh eye

supercars like the Elite, only with an electric drivetrain. The Evija was designed in conjunction with British engineering consultancy Williams Advanced Engineering, and only 130 will be made. Lotus’s first all-new model since it launched the Evora 2+2 mid-engined sports car in 2008, the Evija (which is pronounced “e-vi-ya”) ushers in a bold new era for the low volume car maker. As well as being the first model developed by Lotus since it was bought by the Chinese car maker Geely in 2017, the Evija is also the firm’s first pure-electric production car.

Supercar

The numbers Lotus is targeting a sub-3.0 second 0-62mph launch, with 186mph from a standstill arriving in just nine seconds. Some context; a new Ferrari SF90 Stradale will do 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds, while a McLaren Speedtail will do 0-186mph in 12.8sec. The Evija will have a 200mph-plus V-max, Lotus claims.

fresheyecourses.com

True to form Lotus has just revealed the 1973bhp Evija, the all-electric hypercar it claims will be “the most powerful production car in the world. Alongside the usual formula of huge diffuser and flat floorpan, the Lotus Evija achieves extra downforce through two aero tunnels that channel air not over but through the car. Just as F1 designers clear space in front of the diffuser and rear wing to generate cleaner free air flow, so Lotus has essentially done the same thing by boring two tunnels through the bodywork. The rear lights are then wrapped around those tunnels for a futuristic look, while the light-up Lotus badging across the rump doubles as a reversing light.

13

14

Supercar

Flair The Evija looks fairly conversative from the front: stacked headlights, and cooling ducts feeding air to that Williams-sourced battery, but as your eye settles towards the rear, things take a more innovative twist.

fresheyecourses.com

15

The look The Lotus Evija’s design is quite arresting from some angles: half traditional supercar (especially in side profile) and half outrageous hypercar with mad detailing (check out those massive rear air scoops). It’s built around a rigid carbonfibre monocoque – the first on a roadgoing Lotus – around which they’ve shrink-wrapped an extreme, downforce-led design that looks unlike anything else on the road.

16

Supercar

What’s next The Evija is going to be Hethel’s halo product, and it’ll be followed by a refreshed, then expanded range of Lotus cars – all of which will borrow elements of its design language. Get ready for a 2020s version of the Elan, and then a Chinese-made SUV after that.

fresheyecourses.com

17

Inside and out Inside the Evija’s forward-facing, teardrop-shaped cabin, Lotus has fashioned a skeletal arrangement of carbonfibre beams that hold everything a driver would need close to hand. Although futuristic, it’s where Lotus’s age-old lightweighting ethos is most evident. There’s a flat-bottomed F1-style wheel with a range of modes – Eco, City, Tour, Sport and Track – and OLED screens on the doors stream footage from the wing-mounted cameras. And interestingly, there’s no touchscreen in sight, with Hethel wanting to maintain a pure, uninterrupted driving focus. Although now under the ownership of Chinese car manufacturing giant Geely – which also owns electrified brands Polestar and Geometry – Lotus has tapped Williams Advanced Engineering for the Evija’s powertrain. The tech and business arm of the Grove F1 team already has significant experience with electric motors: it designed the battery used in the first four seasons of Formula E.

Mindful when eating

M

indfulness is based on ancient religious philosophies such as Buddhism and Taoism, where their teachings encourage you to notice your surroundings and understand the environment in which you are in. The teachings also stress for you to understand the emotions that you feel at any particular time point. These concepts may be applied to you and your feelings towards food and how you feel at meal times. As you will see there’s a lot more to it than just feeling hungry.

Getting inside your mind while enjoying your food by Harry Fishpool. patisserie window. Choosing and prepping food. This component of mindful eating is knowing where your food has come from and treating it with due care and attention. This step starts by having a look at the packaging: has the food got air-miles? Is it free range/organic? Are the portions small or large? These quick steps help you make more informed choices when choosing your food, and you will soon appreciate the journey your food has taken (and all the people that have made that journey possible) to be with you in your shopping trolly, and soon to be on your plate. Being mindful when cooking encourages you to open up your senses and take note of what is happening in front of you. Observe

Recognising hunger. This first aspect of mindful eating takes time to come to get to grips with. It is simply becoming aware of your body, the huger sensations, and knowing when it is the right time to eat and what the right thing to eat is. Sometimes it’s best to think about the reasons why you’re hungry: whether your hungry because you’re used to snacking at this time, or if it’s simply just something to do. Am I hungry because I am genuinely hungry and I should eat, or am I hungry because that Danish pastry is screaming ‘eat me!’ from the

how your food is transforming as you cook: the exciting smells, the changing textures, the evolving colours. Take a moment to really appreciate what is happening as you cook, and as you develop a deeper understanding of this process, you will enjoy your cooking far more. Also, cooking is a time in which to slow down, and therefore, a time for you to slow down too. Even if your recipe is a 5 minute wonder job from Jamie Oliver, take your time about it. After all, it will still only take 5 minutes. Meal time. The most important factor in eating mindfully is – you guessed it – developing a certain mindfulness as you eat. It is also the easiest to start off with. For instance, setting down your cutlery after every bite and taking note of the flavours and textures as you chew; does it taste the same way as it smelt? Are the textures the same as when you started cooking? This is the time to build a healthy relationship with food. What are your emotions as you eat? Are they positive, negative or indifferent? Also, take note of the environment your eating in. When on your lunch break, are you in a busy café or have you found a quite secluded spot? It's important to make time to eat with others too. Humans are a social species and food has been a cornerstone of or civilisation for millennia. Eating with friends and family helps build

strong relationships and many argue that we are not doing it enough in our modern day society. Having an insight to how you feel as you eat can result in positive changes in the food choices you make and how, when and where you eat. As you’ve finished. Once you have finished your meal, it is really important to continue to listen to your body and understand what it is saying. This is the stage where you can avoid over eating. Ask yourself whether you are still hungry. Quite often we want to feel totally satiated (feeling full), but once have we reach that stage, we have often eaten too much. Knowing how you feel after a meal will help you control portion sizes and will help you to prevent binge snacking later in the day. Understanding your emotions around food and hunger will go a long way to improving your eating habits and help you build and achievable goals. These steps take time to learn and master. The best way is to take it one step at a time and don’t rush the process. Importantly, as you get better at understanding your emotions, you must also be mentally prepared if your feelings and emotions change down the line. Understanding and being honest with yourself will allow you to make suitable dietary changes that you will benefit from in the long run.

Made in Margate A Shoreditch on sea inspiration by Dennis Sterne.

O

nce hampered by its reputation as a dodgy seaside town, Margate in Kent has become this summer’s destination for landlocked London hipsters seeking to escape the city. Boarded-up shops have been replaced by Instagramfriendly cafés and interiors boutiques, while the Turner Contemporary gallery and the revamped seaside theme park Dreamland have boosted the town’s bucket-list credentials among east London types. The idea behind Haeckel’s, a natural beauty brand and laboratory-cum-shop, was brewing before the hipster invasion. Interested in the local botanicals growing on Margate’s chalky Jurassic coastline, the film-maker and volunteer beach warden Dom Bridges first began experimenting with skincare made

from foraged seaweed in his kitchen, before founding the brand in 2012 with business partner Alex Verier. Disillusioned by the production ethos of many larger skin care companies Dom wanted to create simple hand crafted products that showcased the surrounding coasts natural ingredients in the hope that the products themselves would then promote Margates heritage of healthy coastal living. When Haeckels was just starting out Dom would collect seaweed and local botanicals along the Margate coast and bring them bring back to his family kitchen to experiment. Dom’s wife Jo soon said it was time to get a proper Lab and turn a passion into a business as every saucepan in the kitchen was starting to smell like a skin care product. Taking his wifes advice he acquired the Lab on Cliff u

n an unsuspecting corner of Hackney Central, East London, there’s a busy non-alcoholic soda brewery named Square Root London. From the street, all you can spy are a few empty crates and a large standalone chiller, but when granted access inside it’s a veritable Charlie’s Chocolate Factory of activity. Cases and cases of fresh fruit are strewn about the place, large cauldrons and vats are bubbling away with brightly coloured juice concoctions, and a smallish gaggle of staff enthusiastically discuss ideas for their next obscure soda flavour. The man behind all of this is Ed Taylor. “From the very beginning we wanted to focus on using fresh and seasonal produce. It’s easy to lose touch with seasonality when most fruit and veg is available year round from your local supermarket. So, we really wanted to get people thinking about when produce is at its best and what else might be in season when your favourite summer berries have finished. Buying from UK farmers when they have the produce available is the best thing to do, and it keep things simple.”
