What defines Britishn
I
know what instantly comes to mind for me… the nostalgic and fascinating history which oozes from every corner of the country, leading to a historic monarchy as well as, well-known characters, play writes and inventors from time forgotten; paving out our way of life, which has evolved from humble beginnings. It’s fascinating to think how far back British history goes, starting with Egbert, a Saxon King from 827-839, who was the first monarch to establish a stable and extensive rule over all of Anglo-Saxon England. Of course Elizabeth II is our monarch who has been in power since 1952, and in 2015 became Britain’s longest serving monarch, ruling longer than her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria who reigned for 63 years and 216 days. That’s a brief overview of the rich history our country is built on. However, Britishness to people today seems to be based more on our characteristics and how they define us as a nation. For instance, the Great British weather and how we deal with our defining and sometimes troublesome seasons, is always a hot topic! From bitterly cold winters, where

every year we never seem to be prepared for the snowfall which causes continuous chaos. To joyful Spring, where nature comes back to life, trees are blooming and the need for several layers of clothing has finally decreased! Summer, Brits are known for putting up with damp climates mixed with the odd outburst of sudden blistering heat, where (almost) everyone heads to the nearest beach to catch their yearly dose of vitamin D! And Autumn where we enjoy our surroundings turning into crisp vibrant settings. We moan, predict and discuss the weather almost daily, and it’s the first topic of nearly every conversation we have, why.. who knows? But we just wouldn’t be Brits if that wasn’t the case! We are a nation who loves its food! Fish and chips, pie and mash, the hearty roast dinner and the much loved English Breakfast, they’re firm favourites which us Brits just can’t get enough of them when visiting our

local country pubs; featuring roaring fire places and cosy interiors. Britain is also known for its diversity and rich ever-evolving cultures, which have introduced a variety of much loved cuisines. Our love for Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Thai and many more ,has all been as a result of the multicultural society we live in today. Britishness around the world is known as a country where people queue in line for just about anything, and consider it rude to complain even when the services or standards we’ve received are inadequate. However we are also a country which stands up for its beliefs in times of adversity and stands together united to show strength, many scenarios of late illustrating this strongly. The stiff upper lip softens and the warm nature of our nation is clear to see. Our love of humour is also prevalent, as us Brits don’t shy away from laughing at ourselves, and the funny scenarios most of us find ourselves in from time to time. In a nut shell we are known for our British bulldog spirit and that’ll live on for years to come!

Burberry Christmas Experience some British eccentricity this season.
F
ashion house Burberry has launched a Christmas campaign which has eschewed more familiar tropes of fairy lights and snow to shoot a ‘realistic’ depiction of the big day, albeit through a ‘fantasy lens’. Shot by Juno Calypso, ‘Close Your Eyes and Think of Christmas’ boasts an all-star cast including the likes of Kristin Scott Thomas, Matt Smith, Naomi Campbell and M.I.A who each play their parts against a backdrop of delayed trains, feasting, family and unreliable weather. Calypso commented: “I wanted to portray a more realistic British Christmas, but still shot through a fantasy lens. The campaign takes you through all the key seasonal rituals, both good and bad. That’s what brings us together.” Amid the madness, Burberry showcases signature pieces of fashion-ware such as its trench coat, archive-print scarves, and The Belt Bag. The campaign also includes a preview of the new Vivienne Westwood and Burberry collaboration. It will be hoping to win over shoppers this Christmas after it faced backlash over its use of real fur and burning of unsold goods. www.uk.burberry.com

Winter Season Notes
inter is hear again and if you are of growing years it means it came around too soon. But what does this mean for your wardrobe? Fresheye continues to document the seasons trends and highlight what we see as the influencial and most of all interesting nuances. Layering continues to be a way to build texture. It has a practical nature too in that it traps air creating that desired insulating effect important to keeping warm of course. This time around our his and her round up centres on shape, texture and some traditional
fresh eye
cuts. If dark and muted colour is your thing then highlight with texture. Get involved with the weaves of constructed textiles. Enjoy the chain and rope weaves in fine and chunky knitwear. Rediscover the traditional patterns and adopt them for a timeless accent in your wardrobe so you can pull them out for the next year, and year after. Fashion note Pair up with well made accessory statement pieces. For men, the ‘man bag’ is here should you switch from a ruck sack. For women, leather gloves and chunky scarves look great.

Fashion Interior A new forecast at Fashion Flooring & Interiors by Dennis Sterne.
B
ack in 1983 Spandau Ballet released their huge hit ‘Gold’ and the colour has made another triumphant return in the interior world. Interior Designer Kathryn Hughes tells me that gold featured big throughout the seasonal shows. NEC Birmingham Spring and Autumn Fair featured a plentiful decoration of gold in lighting, wall coverings, and furniture. Notable green accents were also featured. She referred to a delivery from Dubai which reflects the trend. Dare I say it, but it could be safe to say that the Arabs love a measure of gold. Trend Kathryn says that there’s a good demand for wallpaper which reveals adventure in the decision-making process. My query is whether paint wins over wallpaper for the sake of
fresh eye
economy, but she argues that adventure as a trend makes way for wallpaper choice. This leads me to suppose that during adventurous times, there’s a greater demand for a little oppulance and embellishment. So, why not break out a little flamboyance when choosing for your living room, bathroom or bedroom. It’s worth noting that flamboyance doesn’t have to mean highly decorative. The use of gold is as well placed in minimal design and a minimal setting. Also a considered placement in contemporary light fittings and structures. Our trend topic touched on ‘checks with a twist’. This suggests to me that classic elements will always be revived. Kathryn’s favourite period is art deco. A revelation that I simply should have discovered earlier in my reporting of Fashion Flooring & Interiors. Goodness knows why the subject wasn’t eluded to in our previous

meets. We agree that the art deco period appears to be the first movement to noticeably embrace a sense of futurist and minimalistic discovery. Look at art deco in fashion, jewellery, furniture, and interior design and see the handwriting that’s plain to see. It’s a notable period that birthed the re-invention of the woman too. Note shorter hair and hemline. Some of the most accessible interiors for a source of inspiration and reference come from hotels. Kathryn’s favourite is The Delaro Hotel in South Beach Miami.”I looove’ she says. My recommendation is Blakes Hotel, Knightsbridge, London. Time for a little Google action.

Scrapbook. A note to all lovers of Pinterest. Pinterest is a great way to compile all your newly found
references to the things you love that may inspire your new interior. However once brought together these references can appear disjointed and incompatible in places. This is where the expertise of Kathryn comes into play. Count on her to make cohesive sense from a barrage of photos, colour swatches and thumbnails. Autumn this year Fashion Flooring Interiors turned 1. Fanfare if you please! Its current collaboration is with Patrick Oliver (www. patrick-oliver.co.uk) utilising a useful concept called ‘Home staging’. If you are having trouble selling your property or simply want to maximize its sellability, what better idea than to make way for a temporarily displayed gorgeous furniture and fitting assembly presenting a ‘Life Style’. If you ask me, a very good idea seeing that many people fail to envisage the potential of a space unless it’s already beautifully presented. Bring me some wine
W
e have swiftly come into that time of year again. The light in the town have been turned on, supermarkets barrage your eardrums with Wham! and Mariah Carey, and you’ve even been able to purchase a present for your impossible-tobuy for father-in- law. But for the wine lover, if there is something we can all agree on is that Christmas is the time to indulge in a good bottle of wine or two. So here’s my quick fire guide to get the most out of your bottle over the Christmas period. First up, we’re addressing the big one – food and wine pairing. A successful food and wine pairing may be considered a work of art; the romance and the symmetry between the flavours of your food and wine is irresistible. But as they say, it does takes two to tango. So do have a think about the food your going to be eating – it’s weight, texture, and flavour intensity. Also, take note of the sauce you’re going to be having with your dish. Quite often, it’s the sauce that gives the dish its flavour. If your having duck with cranberry sauce, a medium bodied Pinot Noir will
The do’s and dont’s of wine at Christmas time by Harry Fishpool. balance with the acidity and flavour profile of the cranberries. Do learn a bit about your wine and where it has come from. Picking up a few facts about your bottle will impress your friends and it’ll put you in the good books of your wine loving boss. Itsamazing how much you’ll pick up and it’s a great way to discover what you like in a wine. Don’t, for heavens sake, say ‘Oh, that’ll do!’ It is a cardinal sin to buy the first bottle you see. Do you remember when Sven-Göran Erikkson selected the young Theo Walcott for England’s 2006 World Cup squad? And do you know why Sven selected Theo? No? I don’t think anyone does. When you enter a wine shop, talk to the shop assistants and pick their brains. They’re

madly passionate about their subject and are more than willing to help. So the point is, don’t do a Sven and select the first thing you see – majority of the time, there are better options out there. If you don’t like a wine, you don’t have to drink it. Everybody has different tastes and what lights up the tastebuds of one person, may not do for another. After all, there is no such thing as a perfect bottle of wine. And in my opinion, this is the most captivating aspects of wine. If you’re at a a party, and you get along well with the host, politely ask if they havesomething else. If they’re a good host, they will kindly oblige. Lastly, Christmas is all about rejoicing with friends and family; it’s a time to share stories, let your hair down, and have a good laugh. Laughter brings the best out in yourself, and creates memories that last a life time. A good bottle of wine in good company and with good food is one of life’s simple pleasures. So go ahead and treat yourself this Christmas with a great bottle of wine and share it around with your friends and family!
