An emotive subject
H
aving emotional intelligence is important, as it reflects a person’s ability to recognise emotions and to understand the effects of them. It also includes using that information to guide and determine thinking and behaviour. As human beings we learn these key factors throughout our lives and the experiences we encounter; however, is there such a thing as increasing your emotional intelligence? Apparently so, professors David R. Caruso and Peter Salovey broke down four of the key skills involved in developing emotional intelligence, in their seminal research and publication ‘The Emotionally Intelligent Manager’. These include, 1. Identifying your own feelings as well as those of others. 2. Using feelings to guide your own thinking and reasoning, along with others. 3. The importance of understanding how feelings might change and develop as events gradually unfold. 4. Managing to stay open to the concept of feelings and integrate this into decisions and actions. Emotional discovery also consists of practical steps which everyone

Emotional intelligence - A gateway toward the road to intelligence psychology by Sophie Fitzjohn. can do, and probably already does, to a certain extent. Taking some time to sit down and reflect on your own emotions is a good place to start, and thinking about how you typically respond to certain situations, e.g. when you receive bad feedback, or when someone close to you unfairly blames something on you, possibly also how your mood changes when another driver causes you to react quickly due to a poor decision made by them, or when a close friend unexpectedly begins to cry. When you identify your own emotions and reactions within certain situations, you become more mindful and begin to gain control. Often many of us don’t realise that other people view us very differently to what we view ourselves, and vice versa. Therefore, asking others for perspective is a way in which we can simply understand how perceptions differ, and the consequences those differences create. Armed with all the above information, enables you to be more observant of your current emotions. Self-reflection and what others share with you will help you to be more

in tune with what you’re feeling. More practical steps, involve using “the pause”, simply taking a moment to stop and think before we act or speak. By taking time to think before we act actually saves everyone a lot of time, as rushing into a decision doesn’t always results in the best outcome. Many of us agree that qualities such as empathy and compassion are valuable factors when it comes to healthy relationships. Therefore, ensuring we don’t neglect these qualities when they matter most is important. No matter whether you are a boss or an employee, taking criticism is never easy.. However, don’t beat yourself up about it, or even take offense, instead ask ‘what can I learn from this?’ by putting your personal feeling aside you can learn and improve from the alternate perspective. The last step to building an overall better emotional understand is to practise all the above steps. After all, like any other skill… practise makes perfect!

t a time when travel feels like a relic of the past, one brand is bringing a dose of much-needed escapism in the bucketloads. Ushering in the next chapter of arguably the most legendary and canonical perfumes in the world, CHANEL have enlisted the help of iconic French actor and the brand’s new global ambassador, Marion Cotillard to transport us to otherworldly realms for the latest CHANEL No. 5 ad. In the sweeping, cinematic visuals, Cotillard is walking on a snow-covered Parisian bridge when she is propelled by her imagination onto the moon, before embarking in a mischievous and seductive dance routine with her lover, giddy spins and all. When she switches back to reality, she turns around and discovers the very same man at her side. Fate, some would call it. The new campaign pays homage to the history of No 5, championing the idea that beauty is in joy and equality. In the ad, the woman and the man guide and support themselves, seducing each other in an elegant embrace. This is a fragrance made to be worn
by a woman who strives to accomplish her dreams. That is the power of No 5. Cotillard’s relationship with the Maison has been longstanding, walking the red carpet in CHANEL for the Jean-Pierre Jeunet film A Very Long Engagement in 2004 and again in Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose in 2008.
Returning to a French actress meant returning to a subconscious image of French femininity dear to the spirit of the House.

hether Ralph Lauren could have anticipated it or not, it seems now more than ever that fashion is being distilled down to the bare essentials. With nowhere to go and no one to see outside the handful in our social pod, the concept of getting dressed has become highly focused. As many work from home, it’s no surprise that the brand’s cashmere sweatsuits have been wildly successful. If anyone knows how to refine casual tropes through a luxurious lens, it’s Lauren. season and paired with a matching slouchy double-breasted blazer. The brand’s beloved ’70s and ’80s menswear tailoring was tweaked to fit the demands of a modern wardrobe, hefty Harris Tweeds were replaced with tactile Italian fabrics, and checkered overcoats were encrusted with a twinkling layer of micro sequins. Fashion note Jill Biden, PhD, has emerged as a new Ralph Lauren favorite in recent months. She’s been seen wearing his tailored Camden jacket and showed up to her husband’s acceptance speech at the Democratic convention in a navy blue Lauren dress.

Bring me some wine
W
e have swiftly come into that time of year again. The light in the town have been turned on, supermarkets barrage your eardrums with Wham! and Mariah Carey, and you've even been able to purchase a present for your impossibleto- buy for father-in- law. But for the wine lover, if there is something we can all agree on is that Christmas is the time to indulge in a good bottle of wine or two. So here's my quick fire guide to get the most out of your bottle over the Christmas period. First up, we're addressing the big one – food and wine pairing. A successful food and wine pairing may be considered a work of art; the romance and the symmetry between the flavours of your food and wine is irresistible. But as they say, it does takes two to tango. So do have a think about the food your going to be eating – it’s weight, texture, and flavour intensity. Also, take note of the sauce you’re going to be having with your dish. Quite often, it’s the sauce that gives the dish its flavour. If your having duck with cranberry sauce, a medium bodied Pinot Noir will
The do’s and dont’s of wine at Christmas time by Harry Fishpool. balance with the acidity and flavour profile of the cranberries. Do learn a bit about your wine and where it has come from. Picking up a few facts about your bottle will impress your friends and it’ll put you in the good books of your wine loving boss. Itsamazing how much you’ll pick up and it’s a great way to discover what you like in a wine. Don’t, for heavens sake, say ‘Oh, that’ll do!’ It is a cardinal sin to buy the first bottle you see. Do you remember when Sven-Göran Erikkson selected the young Theo Walcott for England’s 2006 World Cup squad? And do you know why Sven selected Theo? No? I don’t think anyone does. When you enter a wine shop, talk to the shop assistants and pick their brains. They’re

madly passionate about their subject and are more than willing to help. So the point is, don’t do a Sven and select the first thing you see – majority of the time, there are better options out there. If you don’t like a wine, you don't have to drink it. Everybody has different tastes and what lights up the tastebuds of one person, may not do for another. After all, there is no such thing as a perfect bottle of wine. And in my opinion, this is the most captivating aspects of wine. If you’re at a a party, and you get along well with the host, politely ask if they havesomething else. If they’re a good host, they will kindly oblige. Lastly, Christmas is all about rejoicing with friends and family; it’s a time to share stories, let your hair down, and have a good laugh. Laughter brings the best out in yourself, and creates memories that last a life time. A good bottle of wine in good company and with good food is one of life’s simple pleasures. So go ahead and treat yourself this Christmas with a great bottle of wine and share it around with your friends and family!

I dream of Knightsbridge
A journey toward luxury by Dennis Sterne.

rom a young age, I often wondered why my mother would travel a great distance from north to central London just to buy a turkey for Christmas dinner. Granted I’d been to Harrods (Store Fabulous) before but now it’s clear to me at that age, discernment was merely an infant, rather like my then self. I remember asking her why she made such a ritual every year. Hardly economic I thought, the tube would be very busy. Added to that, the store would be bustling and to my mind, it appeared to be an effort and journey fraught with various tests of patience not to mention an overinflated turkey price tag. Well, the answer she gave could well have been my first view through a window where I would come
to appreciate luxury and a luxury experience. She told me that she always looked forward to making a trip that was unlike any of her usual shopping experiences. For her, going to Harrods was the beginning of her being primed for Christmas. The beginning too of the feeling you get when anticipating something magical, warming, and invigorating. Harrods to my mother represents much of what you expect when imagining what it is to engage with high quality. Christmas after all is a special time and it makes every sense to my mother to engage with it in a special way. Of course, she’s absolutely right that certain experiences only do well by bringing you into alignment with a heightened sense of u appreciation. So, the onset of her trip to

u Harrods always means she will be brought to an experiential space where ‘special’ engagement is at the fore. Let’s face it, having something to look forward to goes a long way toward wellbeing and a sense of enjoyment. My mother has always championed quality over mediocre and reminded me just how good that turkey tasted every year. I can’t lie, I have vivid memories of that taste of succulent turkey and cranberry sauce. Christmas turkey without cranberry sauce is a no-no in my book so please take note. If you’re visiting Harrods this Christmas, you’d do well to consider one of their amazing hampers. While you’re there, take a look at the toy department with the kids. If you end up in the food hall and haven’t yet decided on Christmas dinner then do as mother does. Harrods - 87-135 Brompton Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7XL

Legendary Italian egineering Ferrari Roma 2021 Featuring Twin-Turbo 3.9L V-8 Engine. Designed at the Ferrari Centro Stile in Maranello headed by Flavio Manzoni the Roma aims to be an icon of Italian design. It also represents the pinnacle of performance in this category, thanks to its turbo-charged V8 from the family of engines that has won the overall International Engine of the Year award four years running. In this version, the engine reaches 620 cv and is coupled with the new 8-speed DCT gearbox that was introduced on the SF90 Stradale.

LOOK AND FEEL The Roma backs-up this eye-catching new Ferrari look on the move. This is Ferrari’s interpretation of a grand tourer, so performance, agility and handling are closer to the forefront of what the Roma delivers. It blends sports car traits with concessions to comfort and usability that the best GTs need to offer.

Retrospective inspiration According to the Italian brand, with its distinctive flair and style, the car is a contemporary representation of the carefree, pleasurable way of life that characterised Rome in the 1950s and ‘60s. INTERIOR The drive controls in the centre console mimic the old open gate of manual Ferraris, but it’s not just a design conceit: three-point turns beside an Italian vineyard are much easier to perform. New legend Beautiful and redolent of the past in its ideals if not, thankfully, its design, the Roma (ÂŁ171k) sits just above the Portofino (ÂŁ166k) and promises to be both a GT and a sports car, as well as the first of a new breed of more usable, everyday Ferrari.

BRIEF The shark-nosed two-plus coupe is a purer design than most of the company’s recent offerings and although it shares some underpinnings with the Portofino, including its frontmounted V8, its gran tourismo brief comes with a sporting edge.

Renaissance The Roma represents a renaissance for a Ferrari that embodies understated luxury rather than shrieking its potential from terracotta-clad rooftops, that posits elegance ahead of razor-sharp handling smarts. It’s the Ferrari for people who don’t really ‘get’ the Italian powerhouse, who wouldn’t describe themselves as keen drivers, and who prefer to fly under the radar. Given the state of the world right now, a less shouty Ferrari might be just the ticket.

Holding back the years Biden wins presidency, ending four tumultuous years under Trump.
J
oseph Robinette Biden Jr. was elected the 46th president of the United States on Saturday, promising to restore political normalcy and a spirit of national unity to confront raging health and economic crises, and making Donald J. Trump a one-term president after four years of tumult in the White House. Mr. Biden’s victory amounted to a repudiation of Mr. Trump by millions of voters exhausted with his divisive conduct and chaotic administration, and was delivered by an unlikely alliance of women, people of color, old and young voters and a sliver of disaffected Republicans. Mr. Trump is only the third elected president since World War II to lose re-election, and the first in more than a quarter-century. The result also provided a history-making moment for Mr. Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, who will become the first woman to serve as vice president.
