Sophisticate

A story of

T

he umbrella has a long history and throughout it, it has always been regarded as a symbol of distinction. It began life as a parasol providing protection from the sun rather than the rain. The earliest records of the umbrella came from artworks discovered in Iraq, Iran and Ancient Egypt. Umbrellas were also utilised in Ancient Greece and quickly became a lady’s fashion accessory. From Greece, they travelled to Rome where once again they were utilised as lavish fashion accessories for wealthy romans made from gold, silver and silks to match their day time attire. Eventually the parasol travelled west and the trend caught on very quickly. When it reached France, it was the French who added waterproof fabric to provide rain protection. The first Londoner to display an umbrella was Jonas Hanway an eccentric merchant traveller. He was extremely open about using his umbrella in public to the point that he upset London’s Coachmen who did not want their business being affected by an item which could

shelter and adornment by Sophie Fitzjohn. easily supply protection from the elements in soggy London. Mr Hanway stood firm and eventually the umbrella began to establish its popularity. Today, unfortunately an umbrella is regarded as a cheap necessity and an easily replaceable purchase. However, The London Undercover Concept was created to re-launch the umbrella giving it a modern twist all the while maintaining its historical links to sophistication and individuality. The pocket Square can also be traced back to ancient civilisations. As time moved on, handkerchiefs became popular in Europe where they were made from lavish materials which denoted wealth and sophistication. Modern men today wear their square in the top left hand breast pocket. These accessories have enjoyed a re birth in popularity and provide an essential wardrobe staple to high profile celebrities and fashion gurus alike. Unfortunately, todays working attire has become so much more casual, so to be unique an exquisite pocket square in a luxurious fabric provides a touch of originality, elegance and style.

Handkerchief history Ancient Egypt Handkerchiefs can be traced back as far as 2000BC when the ancient Egyptians used them as a display of their power and wealth. In those days, small pieces of linen were dyed with red powder to make them more decorative or if you were extremely rich, you’d use silk. Ancient Greece and The Romans Not ones to be outdone, the ancient Greeks also adopted handkerchiefs, which they would spritz with perfume to ensure they always had something pleasant to smell if they found themselves walking through unpleasant city streets. The Romans had a similar practice and handkerchiefs even had a place in traditional gladiator battles, with each event starting once the Emperor dropped his handkerchief.

Happy returns We are 1! Fresheye Magazine comes of age after twelve well received editions.

H

ere at Fresheye Magazine we have been passionately energized in the business of documenting contemporary times and visions through the medium of photography and words. We trust as a reader you agree that there isn’t another lifestyle photography magazine quite like it. After twelve editions the online inpressions are now well over ten thousand which is testiment to the powerful ISSUU platform and a growing audience that is engaging with a magazine that celebrates lifestyle, culture and photography. It’s an accepted notion that art gives the viewer a window in which to interpret the time that we are living. A window that we can use to take hold and embrace a new understanding of our surroundings and language. Photography has exactly the same quality and purpose, for the sake of giving direction even. More than ever before photography is at

the heart of people’s lives. The introduction of the popular compact camera and now smart phone is clear evidence that taking pictures is inherent in today’s cultural fabric. We depend on imagery as a form of communication that is now intrinsic. Instragram, Snapchat, Facetime, Video, Youtube, Animation, Cinemagraphs are all actively used to communicate messages and ideas commercially and socially. Technology and Apps constantly develop to enable the creative process. Once we discover that photography visually freezes time, we discover a treasure cave of archive and new opportunity. Fresheye Magazine’s purpose is to inspire and have you look and things with new eyes. The clue is in the title. We very much hope you continue to follow and share all the great content coming your way throught 2017. Here at Fresheye Magazine we wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Long may you enjoy the magazine! X

Dining views Go experience the Grain Store for pleasurable food and night views. Kings Cross is reborn.

A

decade ago King’s Cross was a blighted part of central London perpetually about to morph into a thriving neighborhood anchored around the soon-to-be Eurostar hub at St. Pancras linking up to continental Europe. Now, eight years after Eurostar’s arrival, it’s finally happened — and when I say “morph,” think sea change. The scale of the transformation is stunning: King’s Cross is now the fastest and most dramatic changing neighborhood in London, not to mention the largest redevelopment project anywhere in Europe. The very thought of Kings Cross as a dining destination was unthinkable, but now this area of London is a vibrant testiment to how things change. Enter the Grain Store for a pleasurable dining experience that prompted a u-turn for any regret on city gentrification. I can highly recommend the croquette starter. Mushroom & Montgomery cheddar croquettes, pickled walnut mayonnaise (pictured right). It certainly left an impression.

The food. There are no geographical boundaries to the influences that have inspired the eclectic menu; they are a culmination of Bruno Loubet’s extensive travels and the years he has dedicated to his beloved vegetable patch. Although many dishes have a meat or fish element, vegetables are given equal billing, if not the starring role. Fermented, sprouting, pickled and smoked ingredients feature alongside the fresh and the seasonal. Flavour above all else is king. The Space. The interiors, created by the acclaimed designer Russell Sage, are designed around the idea of the exploded kitchen. The restaurant is a flexible space that blurs the lines between kitchen and dining room, with elements of the cooking process spilling over to the table. The 80-seat terrace on Granary Square is equally eclectic and especially popular for al fresco dining and drinking in the Summer. Grain Store. 1-3 Stable Street, London, N1C 4AB. u

The Nutcracker The definitive ballet with staying power.

I

n 1891, world renowned choreographer, Marius Petipa commissioned Peter Tchaikovsky to compose the music for Alexandre Dumas’s adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” Its first performance in 1892, was a complete failure – both the critics and the audience disliked it. Since then, The Nutcracker has been the most widely performed ballet in the world. Almost every ballet company from Australia to Europe and Asia to America performs the The Nutcracker during the holiday season. How can a ballet that was disastrously debuted and ill-received be one of the most famous ballets today? Because in 1954, George Balanchine, another world renowned choreographer, created a new production of The Nutcracker. His choreography breathed new life into the ballet and sparked the attention and imagination of the viewing audience. Flash scenes - The Battle. As Clara sleeps and dreams, the magic begins. The Christmas tree grows enormous as Clara appears to shrink. Everything under the tree seems to come to life. Clara is awakened by a group of mice as they enter the room, led by an evil Mouse King. She tries to escape, but the Nutcracker springs to life with an army

of toy soldiers. They defend Clara by battling the Mouse King and his army. When the Nutcracker appears to be struggling, Clara tosses her slipper at the Mouse King, knocking him down. The Nutcracker swiftly defeats the Mouse King. The mice scurry away, defeated, dragging their fallen leader behind them. Magically, the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince. The prince invites Clara to join him on a journey to the Land of Sweets. Land of Snow. Dancing Snowflakes welcome Clara and her Prince as they travel through the Land of Snow on their way to the Land of Sweets. To Clara’s amazement, the enchanted forest is blanketed with beautiful snow. The Snow Prince, Snow Queen and Snowflakes dance for Clara and her prince, welcoming them into their winter wonderland. Clara Awakens. On Christmas morning, Clara awakens under the Christmas tree, still holding her beloved nutcracker. She thinks about the mysterious events that happened during the night and wonders if it was all just a dream. She clutches her nutcracker doll and delights in the magic of Christmas.

Iconic David Bailey’s favourite model Jean Shrimpton was the Shrimp who sparked the Sixties. After their New York shoot was published, Bailey and Shrimpton became superstars - reluctantly in her case. As she wrote: “I’m not interested in clothes and I hate people staring at me.” This image, shot in 1962. If Twiggy, who arrived later, in 1967, was the kooky, androgynous face of the 1960s, Shrimpton was the timeless beauty.

Shopping

Introducing Amazon Go and the world’s most advanced shopping technology. No lines, no checkout - just grab and go!

fresheyecourses.com

A

mazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology so you never have to wait in line. With our Just Walk Out Shopping experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout. (No, seriously.) Four years Amazon asked itself what if we could create a shopping experience with no lines and no checkout? Could we push the boundaries of computer vision and machine learning to create a store where customers could simply take what they want and go? Our answer to those questions is Amazon Go and Just Walk Out Shopping. How does Amazon Go work? The checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Our Just Walk Out technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon

account and send you a receipt to your smartphones. It ends with a cheeky message: “No lines. No Checkout. (No, seriously.).” So I can just shop normally? Yes! Just browse and shop like you would at any other store. Then you’re on your way. No lines, no checkout. What can I buy at Amazon Go? Amazon offers delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by our on-site chefs and favorite local kitchens and bakeries. Our selection of grocery essentials ranges from staples like bread and milk to artisan cheeses and locally made chocolates. You’ll find well-known brands we love, plus special finds we’re excited to introduce to customers. For a quick home-cooked dinner, pick up one of our chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, with all the ingredients you need to make a meal for two in about 30 minutes. What do I need to get started? Concept Bike

Y

ou might think that an invention as simple as the bicycle would have an uncomplicated past. But as it turns out, this highly popular invention has a history fraught with controversy and misinformation. While stories about who invented the bicycle often contradict one another, there’s one thing that’s certain — the very first bicycles were nothing like the ones you see cruising down the street today. In 1817, Karl Drais debuted a two-wheeled vehicle, known by many names throughout Europe, including Draisine, running machine and hobby horse. While Drais’ invention was viewed by his contemporaries as a curiosity, not a method of transportation, the hobby horse was actually built to solve a very serious problem — a dearth of real horses. Bad harvests and a series of natural disasters occurring in the early 1810s resulted in mass starvation and the slaughtering of thousands of horses. Drais’ hobby horse was created as an alternative to transportation on horseback.

are the carbon fiber construction, chainless drivetrain and the absence of a conventional frame structure and rear hub. The front and rear section are kept together by means of the upper arc-shaped component and a tension rod that runs from the steering column to the seat. The chainless drive visually leaves an empty space in the rear wheel, which puts into evidence the transparent aerodynamic shape of the rear light. The currently undefined tire technology, the show a material wrapped around the wheels.

Faith, Hope and Charity George Michael, a British icon remembered.

A

s the world comes to terms with the loss of George Michael, who died on Christmas Day aged 53, social media users have found a wonderful way of paying tribute to him. The singer, who first made his name in the pop group Wham!, was known for his generosity and now stories of his kindness have been shared in his memory. Just some of the stories about the superstar’s philanthropy now doing the rounds... He was a good friend to Terrence Higgins Trust and personally supported the charity for many years. He was said to have given a debt-stricken student nurse working as a barmaid a £5,000 tip. He apparently worked undercover at a homeless shelter. He spent more than £1 million on John Lennon’s piano and donated it to the Beatles Story museum so it could stay in Liverpool. He is said to have given £100,000 annually to Capital Radio’s Help A Capital Child appeal. He gave a free concert for NHS nurses. He donated the royalties from smash hit ‘Last Christmas’ to Ethopian famine relief.

Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (25 June 1963 – 25 December 2016), known professionally as George Michael, was an English singer, songwriter, and record producer who rose to fame as a member of the music duo Wham! He is best known for his work in the 1980s and 1990s, including hit singles such as “Last Christmas” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, and albums such as Faith (1987) and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 (1990). Michael sold more than 100 million records worldwide. His debut solo album, Faith (1987), sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Michael garnered seven number one singles in the UK and eight number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, including “Careless Whisper” and “Freedom! ‘90”. He ranks among the best-selling British acts of all time. Plans George was planning to re-release ‘Listen Without Prejudice 25’ on his old label Sony Music, with whom he famously battled in court for creative freedom in the 1990s, but with whom harmony has long been restored. Most poignantly, he was putting the finishing touches to a documentary film to accompany the album. The film is currently slated for release in March 2017.
