Technology and the
M
aterialism is a trait which can occur with anyone, at any age and from any background. However now that technology is at the forefront of people’s lives, it’s questionable whether this specific subject has also fallen into the materialistic category too. The rapid pace of improved and innovative technology has meant that objects such as smart phones, interactive consoles and tablets as well as other such gadgets has resulted in these specific items becoming the new household and daily necessities. With constant upgrades of these gadgets people aspire to own the very best; this is due to clever advertising luring people in to buy their new and ‘improved’ products with the guarantee that they will also improve their lives, what’s not to love! However, this also is caused by the knock on effect of social pressures. To do, have and be the best is the memo! Even though everyone knows that materialistic things don’t buy long term content happiness, right? The rise of these types of gadgets has meant

that the world is now exposed to Apps such as Instagram, Twitter and other social media networks, of which weren’t around 10 years ago. new materialism of others, aka materialism. From youngsters posing in front of super cars to business moguls casually snapped in the foreground of a private jet, groups of friends on extravagant holidays compelled in to doing outlandish experiences, as well as the endless photos of people’s posts showing off new cars, shoes, yachts, even mansions and luxurious meals out. It’s a whole new way to view life and the lives of others, due to technology. These type of images are, of course, intended to incite envy and an ambition to be just as ‘successful’. However, these pictures also illustrate a streak of desperation, it’s as if ownership has been put into reverse. Photos taken on the newest gadgets portray a life of plenty, however could also depict some kind of void. Research has uncovered a two-way relationship between materialism and loneliness: materialism fosters social isolation and vice versa. People who are cut off from others attach themselves to possessions, such as gadgets. Ironically the material pursuit of self-esteem actually reduces your self-esteem. An impressive body of psychological
Gotta have it!
research supports these aspects and suggests that materialism, a trait which can afflict both the rich and poor, and which the researchers on the subject define as “a value system that is preoccupied with possessions and the social image they project,” is both socially destructive, and more importantly selfdestructive. It manipulates the happiness and peace of mind of those who succumb to it, with many celebrity examples. Materialism is also associated with anxiety, depression and broken relationships, as people turn to the trait to cover up the reality of real life. Technology has resulted in a more digital yet materialistic lens on the world we live in, in a variety of ways; and has been shown to diminish empathy, engagement and most importantly happiness within our lives. Our well-being should be what’s important surely, and not the image, lifestyle or gadgets we wish to own due to the ever growing commercial and technically advanced society we find ourselves now in. Technology should be used and known for its purpose and not as a way of portraying status, wealth or short lived happiness.
Quote - But as an adult working in the fashion industry, I struggle with materialism. And I’m one of the least materialistic people that exist, because material possessions don’t mean much to me. They’re beautiful, I enjoy them, they can enhance your life to a certain degree, but they’re ultimately not important. Tom Ford

How to be an actor Theatrical ambitions - Cillian Murphy.
C
illian Murphy is an Irish actor of stage and screen. Born: 25 May 1976 (age 41). Douglas, County Cork, Ireland. He began his performing career as a rock musician. After turning down a record deal, he began his acting career in theatre, short films and independent films in the late 1990s. Murphy rose to fame after appearing in the films, 28 Days Later, Cold Mountain, Intermission, Red Eye and Breakfast on Pluto, for which he received a Golden Globe award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. He portrays the fictional character of Thomas Shelby in the BBC TV series the Peaky Blinders. He is best known for his performance in big blockbuster hits such as Inception and the Batman trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. Early Life Murphy’s father, Brendan, worked for the Irish Department of Education, and his mother, was a French teacher. His grandfather, and aunts and uncles were also teachers. Musicianship also runs in the family, and Murphy started playing music and writing songs at the age of 10. He has a younger brother, Páidi Murphy, and two younger sisters, Sile Murphy and Orla Murphy. He was raised Roman Catholic and attended the Catholic
secondary school, Presentation Brothers College, where he did well academically, but got into trouble often, sometimes being suspended, until he decided in his fourth year that misbehaving was not worth the hassle. Not keen on sports, a major part of PBC, Murphy found that creative pursuits were not fully nurtured at the school Still, it was in secondary school that he got his first taste of performing, when he participated in a drama module presented by Pat Kiernan, the director of the Corcadorca Theatre Company, which Murphy later described the experience as a “huge high” and a “fully alive” feeling that he set out to chase. His English teacher, William Wall, encouraged him to pursue acting. Resent TV drama Peaky Blinders is a gangster family epic set in Birmingham, England in 1919, just after the First World War. The story centres on the Irish Peaky Blinders gang and their ambitious and highly cunning boss Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy). The gang comes to the attention of Chief Inspector Major Chester Campbell (played by Sam Neill), a detective in the Royal Irish Constabulary sent over by Winston Churchill from Belfast, where he had been sent to “clean up” the city of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), communists, gangs and common criminals.

The story centres on the Peaky Blinders gang and their ambitious and highly cunning boss Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy). Offering more than compelling
characters and a unique look at the unsung city of Birmingham, Peaky Blinders has had a great influence on menswear and womenswear. The trend The look of the unique characters is sharp but not stuffy and it lends itself naturally to a modern reworking. To emulate this kind of historical-hip doesn’t require a full, threepiece herringbone suit (in the style of Thomas Shelby), but rather an emphasis on the details. The outfits are made up of a number of key components which needn’t be worn all together in order to doff a cap to the genre.

Head and shoulders Cap: The flat cap is a clear staple of the show. A pretty timeless accessory, this hat seems to have been popular with one tribe or another for the last century and can add a hint of heritage to an otherwise ‘modern’ outfit. Shirt: the round collar (club collar) shirt, which is such a sharp and focal part of this look. In the actual period (and pictured here) the collar was detachable and buttoned into collarless shirts. These days your club collar comes attached to your shirt and adds a wicked vintage aesthetic to any jacket.

Fashion Note: The 1920s shone a new spotlight on shoes, due to rising hemlines. Women’s hemlines started to rise in the previous decade, due to the onset of WW1, and the requirement for women to fulfil more practical roles. In the 1920s, skirts hit the dizzying height of scarcely below the knee, which would have been unheard of only a few years previously. Legs were clad in stockings, usually of creams or blacks, although pastels and patterns were popular (particularly amongst the daring ‘bright young things’ of the day).

fresheyecourses.com
Hats, coats and dresses There was far more to women’s fashion in the 1920’s than the iconic Flapper look of bobbed hair, long necklaces, cloche hats, flapper slang and dancing to the ‘Charleston’. The explosion of creativity in stunning innovative styles in dress, hair, swimwear, shoes – the list goes on, all raised the bar to a height that hasn’t been matched since. All subsequent eras would seek to emulate, re-create, or re-imagine the clothing styles pioneered by the 1920’s designers and the adventurous women who wore them.
13
14
Fashion Note: The 1920s brought patterned chiffon into fashion, and chiffon coats were worn over afternoon dresses. The idea of glamour evolved from its associations with Orientalism and the exotic into something approaching a distinctly modern, feminine style. It was a style that continued to connote artifice, luxury and sensuousness, signally particularly through the wearing of feathers and fur.

fresheyecourses.com
Jackets and coats Above: The long, streaming coat instantly finishes off the look, adding a touch of elegant drama to the outfit. This is a coat that’s made to be seen, so think about complimenting it with your outfit rather than the other way around.
15
16
Fashion Note: The generously cut, cropped trouser – these trousers, rather than your chillyankle inducing turn-ups, are worn with durable, work boots, the hem falling neatly to the top of the boot. You won’t be able to show off those socks you got for Christmas but then you’re probably okay with that. The cropped trousers wouldn’t be complete without the thick soled, industrial looking work boots. Used for stamping through cobbled streets and keeping your rivals in line, these boots are hardy yet elegant and can be worn a number of ways to complete an outfit.

Accessories in detail Details: From pockets squares to braces, these criminals knew how to accessorise. The smart accessories add so much character to the outfits in the series, from the glint of a pocket watch chain across a woollen waistcoat to the braces and bow tie normally associated with an entirely more charming vintage style.

Vantage A
ston Martin Vantage 2018 has finally been revealed after months of teasers. The new Vantage 2018 has been a hotly anticipated car, which has been spotted camouflaged testing on tracks and in teaser images from Aston Martin. One of its most debated features of the latest Vantage was what direction the design would be taken in. Undoubtedly it is an Aston, but the car is displaying some new design language which could be an indication of future models. It has a sporty and an athletic design with the muscular curves across the body, pronounced bonnet and sharp chrome lined grille. Elements of the DB10 look to have been woven into the new design including the wideset narrow headlights and low full-length grille. A bold design and new direction for Aston which could divide fans. According to the car manufacturer, aerodynamic performance was central to the Vantage design concept. The front splitter directs airflow underneath the car, where a system of fences channels cooling air where it is needed, and also ensures the rear diffuser is fed with clean airflow..
Detail At the rear the new full-length strip light that runs along the lip spoiler is also an example of bold new design language being experimented by Aston Martin. Vantage is a namesake that has been around for seven decades in Aston Martin beginning in 1951 with the high-output engine option for the DB2. It is something that has been synonymous with performance since it was introduced and the British car manufacturer is hoping that doesn’t change with the new model. Powering the new Vantage is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which develops 510PS and 685Nm of torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 195mph. It has a 50:50 weight distribution which should help with the car’s handling, is paired to a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and comes with Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Torque Vectoring. Its chassis is an evolution of the bonded aluminium structure first debuted on the DB11 and has been fitted with new Pirelli P Zero tyres developed specifically for new Vantage.

Stay true to health
I
n the world today we are facing an epidemic of chronic disease, which is attributable to around 70% of the mortality rate. Chronic diseases include obesity, coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s, peripheral artery disease, advanced biological aging, dementia, among others. Most people tend to believe that whether or not you develop certain diseases depends almost entirely upon your genes. It is true that our health is determined by what our genes tell our cells to do. It is also true that there are certain traits such as what eye and hair colour we have, that are entirely determined by the genes inherited from your parents. However, the expression of most of our genes, such as those associated with chronic disease is much more complicated. Our lifestyle has a huge impact on this and while our genes may make us more susceptible to certain diseases, your lifestyle can be the difference as to whether these actually develop. In the last 50 years, rates of diseases such as diabetes, chronic heart disease and cancer have increased at a pace that cannot

We need to ask ourselves therefore how our lifestyles have changed over the last 50 years. We now live in a faster paced society, with access to more packaged and convenience food and higher levels of sugar in our diets. This increase in sugar results in constantly elevated blood glucose, which has been linked to epigenetic changes that will actively promote the onset of diabetes. Many of us will lead more sedentary lives through changes in employment and the widespread access we now all have to owning cars. Stress is also a major influencing factor in almost every psychological condition and in many physical ones. The hormone linked

Your genes are not your destiny! to stress is cortisol, which is released from the adrenal glands in a rhythmic pattern throughout the day as part of the body’s circadian rythm (generally high in the mornings) Cortisol plays an important role in the body’s 24-hour cycle and when protecting/ defending the body during periods of acute stress (e.g. internal inflammation and external physical threats). This is normal and natural however when stress becomes chronic and cortisol levels remain elevated for prolonged periods, cortisol can compromise the optimal functionality of the body as a whole, inhibiting protein synthesis, suppressing the immune system, creating hormone resistance (including insulin-resistance and thyroidresistance), diabetes, weight gain, insomnia, poor nutrient absorption, skin thinning, muscle wasting, osteoporosis, fatigue and exhaustion. In today’s society the line between actual danger (Stress) and perceived danger has become blurred and our lives have become riddled with things that ‘stress’ us and therefore create a physical response within the u

body. In ancient times a man being confronted by a sabertooth tiger or a family experiencing genuine famine during the war would have initiated our fight or flight stress response. Today we seem to be faced with a multitude of things that can initiate this exact same stress response from missing our train, to arguing with a spouse or experiencing money worries. Our lifestyle choices surrounding nutrition, sleep, exercise and stress management are hugely influential in the expression of our genes and are therefore key to the prevention of disease. The body has many mechanisms to survive insult; buffers when we are faced with a health challenge. Giving the body an extra boost with good nutrition, excerise and stress control can make all the difference between chronic illness and health. So how do we turn off those bad genes? In the words of Greg Glassman the founder of Crossfit Inc “Get off the carbs, and get off the couch” Although this may to many, sound a little harsh there is a lot to be said for his principles and the reasoning behind crossfit. Medicine has no effective treatment for chronic disease it simply acts to mask the symptoms. You may take a painkiller for an ongoing back pain, the doctor may prescribe you a drug to lower your heart rate or blood pressure however none of these treatments will cure the cause of the problem.
Wellbeing
fresheyecourses.com
It is your responsibility to take charge of your own health, and get back control of your lifestyle choices. The only way we can avoid the onset of chronic disease and live longer and fuller lives is by helping ourselves through regular exercise, good nutrition and striving towards emotional well being (managing our stress). Crossfit seeks to achieve the balance between all these factors, understanding that all three elements are inextricable if we want to achieve overall health. Crossfit gets people of all backgrounds and ability levels moving, educates them on the basics of good nutrition, and seeks to take people from a state of sickness to wellness and ultimately fitness. The further away from the markers of sickness that we can get, the more buffer we have against fighting disease and thus enabling us to live longer and fuller lives. In summary, although our genes may load the pistol, it is ultimately our environment that will decide whether or not the trigger is pulled!

Good shoes stand the test of time, and are almost oblivious to the ebbs and flows of fashion. Certain styles have established themselves as modern classics; such as moccasins, with their Native American roots, the almost ubiquitous desert boot and the quintessentially British brogue. A quality pair of any of those will lift an outfit and draw compliments from friends and strangers.

Lumiere London is back! Tripping the lights 18-21 January 2018
E
ach Lumiere festival invites international and local artists to create works that light buildings and public spaces, transforming cities across the UK and changing the way we think and feel about public space. The first Lumiere light festival took place in Durham in 2009. Originally planned as a one-off, Artichoke has brought the event back to England’s north east every other year since, commissioned by Durham County Council. Lumiere has also travelled to other cities in the UK, including in 2013 when Lumiere Derry Londonderry was the finale to the first UK City of Culture celebrations. In January 2016, Lumiere London came to the capital for the first time. Pedestrianising large parts of the West End – including Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly – and transforming Mayfair and King’s Cross, the festival brought more than one million visitors to the city over four nights.
