Kick start your new T he month of overindulgence, cosy days in and sparkly nights out must come to an end, and unfortunately that comes in the form of January. However even though Jan is dreaded by most, as the joyful atmosphere of Christmas gradually fades, it’s a great time to regroup and start fresh for another 365 days of adventure! So do you believe in New Year Resolutions? And most importantly if you do, do you keep to them!? Either way, the start of a New Year means something different to everyone of us. And here are a few possible way in which we can embrace January! Many of us love pigs in blankets, and may have turned into one over the festive period; therefore exercise is a top priority on lots of peoples lists, to energise their hibernated personas and get back to feeling fit and healthy! You don’t have to start at 100 miles an hour, take it easy to begin with. Chances are you will fall out of love with exercise pretty quickly if you dive in head first after a month of tucking the turkey away! If you haven’t exercised in

Starting a new beginning.

a while or are trying something new, easing yourself into it is a good approach, let your body get to grips with the new demands you are asking of it. Healthy living is a great way to start the New Year and adjust your habits of the previous year. Many people join the gym post-

year!

by Sophie Fitzjohn.

Christmas, but very few stick to it or really know what they would like to achieve. A great way of ensuring that you don’t fall into this trap, is by being prepared and having a plan. Also Identifying when you want to train, how long for and what you are doing each day is a good way to structure your new healthier lifestyle. This includes creating a day-to-day food diary, which lays out which meals you are having and when, which usually makes meal times a lot less stressful and more nutritionally balanced. Just like taking it easy when you start exercising, setting small and reachable goals is very important and effective in many aspects of life. Stick to one goal at a time, but always have several in line for you to move straight onto. Whether that may be to have a complete declutter and house overhaul or aiming to cook a home cooked meal most evenings, even aiming to start the hobbie you’ve always wanted to try, but have never made time for, or saving for that dream holiday. It’s about setting yourself achievable challenges to get you to where you want to be in all and any aspects of your life!

Optimize your new 2020!

One sure fire way to get yourself motivated is by committing yourself to something you’ve always wanted to do. For example; learning a language which will enable you to travel or live in a part of the world that you’ve always wanted to explore. Set yourself a goal for a couple of months’ time, and the fear of failure will drive you to work harder and achieve it! In the gloomy cold winter months it can be hard to pry yourself from the comfort of your sofa, but exercise benefits so much more than just your physical health. Exercise is one proven treatment for mental health problems also, as feeling good on the inside is just as important as looking good on the outside. It’s all about feeling better about yourself and being proud of what you can actually achieve, after all what’s stopping any of us from doing that! 2020, you’ve got this!

Quote - Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. Oprah Winfrey

Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man. Benjamin Franklin

How to be an actor Let wisdom and self assurance be a compass.

C

atherine Elise Blanchett born 14 May 1969 is an Australian-American actress and theatre director. One of Australia’s most acclaimed actresses, she is known for her roles in both large-scale blockbusters and low-budget independent films. Blanchett is the recipient of numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and three BAFTA Awards. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2007, and in 2018, she was ranked among the highest-paid actresses in the world. Journey Blanchett attended primary school in Melbourne at Ivanhoe East Primary School. Additionally, she later attended Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School and then Methodist Ladies’ College. Furthermore, she studied economics and fine arts at the University of Melbourne. However, she dropped out after one year to travel overseas. Eventually, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NIDA in 1992. Like good teachers, Blanchett observes, a good director can make an enormous difference to one’s path. “You only need one person to believe

fresh eye

in you,” she said, of Kapur’s role in launching her career from “unknown Australian actress” to international film star. She also had praise for directors Martin Scorsese (The Aviator, 2004), David Fincher and his “97 takes” (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 2008) and Woody Allen (Blue Jasmine, 2013). If you ask Woody Allen ‘Did you like what I did?,’ as an actor, he may not answer, she said. “But if you have a genuine question for him, he’ll answer it.” The award-winning actress - who has worked in the film industry for more than 25 years instead chooses to wholly ignore Hollywood’s obsession with so-called perfect appearances. “When I started working in the film industry, I was working with a lot of women,” she told The Cut in a recent interview. “Some of the women were interested in the work and the characters. Some, more in how they look. I realized that I didn’t want to be in the latter. I want to be interested in the work. I want to look out at the world. I want to be interested in the job at hand.” The conscious decision is one that’s helped keep Blanchett sane in the face of the intense and unforgiving pressures. “The obsession on one’s looks can make you a bit crazy,” she said. “And I thought, I don’t want to go crazy.”

Film Already an acclaimed actress, Blanchett received a host of new fans when she starred in Peter Jackson’s Academy Awardwinning blockbuster trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, playing the role of Galadriel in all three films. In addition to The Lord of the Rings, 2001 also saw Blanchett diversify her portfolio with a range of roles in the dramas Charlotte Gray and The Shipping News and the American crime-comedy Bandits, for which she earned a second Golden Globe and SAG Award nomination.

Chanel Ready S/S 2020

n The Nouvelle Vague — the New Wave. Could Virginie Viard have chosen a more pointed, or more poignant, theme for her first solo ready-to-wear collection for Chanel following the death of Karl Lagerfeld? In her show notes, Viard said the rooftops remind her of the Nouvelle Vague. “I thought about Kristen Stewart playing Jean Seberg and all the actresses Gabrielle Chanel dressed at that time,” she said. Clearly, she also thought of shifting Chanel out from Lagerfeld’s powerful aura and starting to put her own creative mark

fresh eye

on the brand. (To that end, continuing with the grand sets may be counterproductive, at least until she clearly defines the essence of her Chanel.) For couture, Viard hedged. The clothes were fine but opinion-free. Not so here, as she went in a decidedly younger direction, with mostly leggy silhouettes and a focus on shorts. Her newsiest proposal: The Chanel tweed suit reimagined as a romper. The notion charmed with a wacky classicism that should appeal to the house’s younger customers. www.chanel.com

Fashion

fresheyecourses.com

Virginie Viard put a young spin on Chanel, inspired by the Nouvelle Vague. A key look: the tweed suit, reimagined as a romper.

11

12

Fashion Note: The rompers introduced Viard’s focus on shorts. They came in silvery and pink metallics and what looked like black Lycra, big enough to just cover the essentials and saved (barely) from vulgarity by a sensible shoe. While the shorts put a youthful spin on the jackets with which Viard showed them, you can bet your camellias there are matching skirts back in the showrooms at Rue Cambon.

Fashion

fresheyecourses.com

Handwriting It’s not overstatement to classify Chanel’s position as unique. Yes, it is a legendary luxury behemoth whose founding codes remain its core design strengths, and those codes long preceded Lagerfeld’s arrival 36 years ago. But by then, Chanel had fallen into a deep dormancy and was virtually ignored by the fashion cognoscenti. He recreated the house on the joint powers of smarts, talent and personality. And for all of his witty runway machinations, he kept the underlying classicism of its fashion.

13

14

Fashion There’s no question that today, brand trumps designer. But designers continue in their brands’ “face of” capacity. Does Chanel - whose fashion is, at its core, deeply traditional and always has been - need at its creative helm an outward-facing personality? Not to retain its thriving bottom line; the shoes, bags, beauty, jewelry, etc. will do that.

Skirts: Viard them short and often full, worn as suits or with embroidered, puff-sleeve blouses. Alternately, she went long with gusto, spelling out Chanel in giant letters in a blue, white and pink print. She also added an overtly casual element in jeans worn with stripes or ruffles on top.

fresheyecourses.com

Forward Vision Viard certainly deserves some breathing room in what must continue to be a very emotional work reality for her. But ultimately, she may have to either go more public with her creative vision — to sell the currency of classic to the Chanel customer — or take greater creative license with the Chanel oeuvre.

15

Quote: Cardi B Says Chanel Makes Her ‘Feel Rich’.

17

The unexpected the show ended on an unexpected note when a tweed-suited, YouTube comedian crashed the finale was more unfortunate than amusing. (Kudos to the intrepid Gigi Hadid for escorting her offstage.) OK, this woman is a creative type who was doing her thing. So is Viard - at a critical moment in her own career and for the house of Chanel. Neither deserved the intrusive disrespect from an opportunistic stranger.

New Bentley

B

entley reveals their vision for the future of GT motoring with the EXP 100 GT Concept. With an eye set to what technology might be available in 2035, the EXP 100 is quoted as utilising an electric powertrain powered by solid state batteries. 0-100 kph in under 2.5 seconds, a top speed of 300 kph and 1,106 lb-ft (1,500 Nm) of torque have all been specced by Bentley. Take note that Those specs quoted are only estimates based on possible technology that may not even me ready in that time so take with a grain of salt. The biggest aspect to take form this concept car is the design language. Sleek and long, this two door GT car has a striking presence with intricate light assemblies and front grille. The rear overhang is massive when compared to the relatively short frontal area, and the glasshouse is expansive. Bentley may have given a glimpse into the their future styling choice. Adrian Hallmark, Bentley Chairman and CEO, said: “On our Centenary, we demonstrate our vision of the future of our Marque, with the Bentley EXP 100 GT - a modern and definitive Grand Tourer designed to demonstrate that the future of luxury

fresh eye

mobility is as inspirational and aspirational as the last 100 years.” The Future Bentley describes the concept as a “showcase of sustainability and innovation”. Continued: “It will feature a fascinating array of materials seamlessly blended together by the designers at Bentley Motors, who have taken handscraftmenship of materials to an as yet unseen level.” While Bentley hasn’t confirmed the powertrain of the EXP 100 GT, Autocar sources say it is powered by a hydrogen hybrid, making it the first time Bentley has demonstrated an interest in hydrogen power. Its first petrol-hybrid, a variant of the Bentayga, will launch in August this year. Meanwhile, a full electric model will arrive within five years. While not yet confirmed, the concept is set to show a transparent OLED display on door cards, first talked about by Bentley in early 2017. The OLED display could overlay wood veneers and only be visible when in use, to control features such as audio. A version of the technology was shown in Bentley’s EXP12 Speed 6 e concept.

Concept

Vision Design director Stefan Sielaff said earlier this year that the concept is “a manifesto for how we see Bentley in the future”.

fresheyecourses.com

The concept taps into growing consumer demand for animal-free luxury with leather alternatives, while also exploring nascent smart-home air purification and lighting technologies.

21

22

Concept Design director Stefan Sielaff says “It’s a view into the future. We don’t want to show a spaceship. It should be something that everyone knows is a Bentley and that the technology we show [is credible]. It’s not only a design statement but a statement for the company.”

fresheyecourses.com

Stefan Sielaff says “It’s about sustainability, social responsibility, local sourcing, materials. It’s a big change in our thinking because society is changing.”

23

24

Concept From the numerous biometric sensors in the cabin, to Bentley formulating the exterior paint from re-engineered rice husk ash – an otherwise harmful bi-product of the rice industry – the EXP 100 GT puts a strong focus on wellness and sustainability. As well as ambient lighting adjusted to match mood, additional lighting effects can be projected onto interior trim panels.

Technology Much of the Bentley EXP 100 GT’s wellness and entertainment system is controlled by interacting with the car’s own on-board artificial intelligence, the aforementioned Bentley PA. This assistant is not only designed to make you comfortable, but also serve up information on points of interest on your route.

fresheyecourses.com

25

It is reassuring to know Bentley is unfazed by the shift from internal combustion to electrification.

Fits like a glove A British brand that’s very handy.

T

he history of Dents can be traced back to 1777, when John Dent established his accessory company manufacturing fine leather gloves in Worcester, England. The company continued to grow under the guidance of Dent’s two sons, John and William, and by 1833 Dents was employing 133 craftsmen and craftswomen at its factories in Worcester and London, engaged in hand cutting and stitching, a unique skill still practised today. From its earliest days the company was an active exporter, successfully selling to the finest shops and stores in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. The skill and craftsmanship which underpin Dents’ worldwide reputation are still very much in evidence, and today the company continues to exercise that care and attention to detail which has been its hallmark since 1777. Although primarily famous for the crafting of fine leather gloves, Dents has always been

involved with the design and manufacture of fine accessories. Today the Dents Collection includes gloves, belts, hats, scarves, and small leather goods for men and women. Dents was awarded a Royal Warrant in 2016 by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. This has become a mark of quality for the company’s products across the world, and is regarded with enormous pride by everyone at Dents. Royal Warrants are a mark of recognition to individuals or companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. Warrants have always been regarded as demonstrating excellence and quality, and are highly prized. There are around 850 Royal Warrant Holders representing a huge cross-section of trade and industry. They range from traditional craftspeople to global and multinational firms operating at the cutting u edge of technology.

Gloves have been worn since the Stone Age, to protect the hands and arms of hunters. The oldest surviving gloves go back more than 3000 years - a pair of linen gloves was found in the tomb of Egyptian King Tutankhamen, who died in 1350 BC.

What is IPA?

Understanding your beer the IPA way.

“I

I hate IPAs. They’re bitter.” “I love IPAs. They have so much alcohol in them.” Those are the two most common things said about IPAs, and neither of them are really true. Not all IPAs are bitter, and not all IPAs have a ton of booze in them. You can’t throw a blanket statement over an extremely broad style of beer. It’s an unfair simplification. But whether you fall on the love or the hate (check yourself) side of this relationship, there’s one thing we can’t deny: IPAs are here to stay. But what do you actually know about IPAs? The IPA was invented in Britain: British sailors, while sailing to India, loaded up barrels of beer with hops, because hops were a preservative. The hops hung around in the beer for so long that they lost their fruity flavor and left a bitter tasting beer. So…British IPAs are malty, bitter, and onenoted. They aren’t the most popular style today, but it’s important to know one when you see it.
