As year three of the pandemic commences, once again we are compelled to contemplate what lies ahead. Normally each new year brings with it anticipation for what we can do in a new way. Hopefully, lessons learned from the previous year, now our thoughts converge into perhaps some reconfigured form of focus.
If we subscribe to a notion of improvement, betterment and forward motion by way of evolving then the last two years have certainly given us more pause for thought than we are generally accustomed to. In the words of Machine Gun Kelly - ‘Let’s talk about it.’ I trust you have heard of the music artist. If not, please Google. These are serious times. I think this is a time of great opportunity. At least for humanity to think more collectively. While it’s clear ethical and social considerations have been brought to the fore, it’s also evident that cancel culture and the like are movements that signify an excessiveness that point to perhaps skewed thinking. My optimism is aligned with the notion that some things have to get worse before they get better.
Last year our government urged us to be vaccinated. Two jabs were all we needed to protect ourselves and others. I reluctantly succumbed, but for the sake of nobility and saving lives. Of course, we later learned that the vaccine wasn’t enough to stop infection and transmission. But it was effective at least to minimize hospitalization. Fast forward and

the Omicron variant urged a reaction by the government to roll out a booster programme. So once again the sleeves roll up while inoculation forms the new order. However, I do wonder whether sleeves are being rolled up in an efficient way. Needless to say that I choose to avoid the booster. The main reason is that I do not fall into the vulnerable group. Omicron is described as mild. This description was made explicit by Angelique Coetzee the South African Doctor who discovered it. Given the revelation, it seems to me that a sledgehammer is being used on a small nail. She acknowledges the UK reaction as panic. Hence my avoidance, and where will it end? Some may draw the line at three jabs until the next knee-jerk reaction prokes more rash decision-making. Little encouragement to keep our immune systems strong and no attempt at antibody testing before vaccinating. I question the so-called correct approach.
My investigations inform me that viruses have a behaviour trend in that they will mutate, and largely the trend is such that the potency from mutations eventually becomes diminished throughout the course.

So while Austria threatens the nation with fines and imprisonment for failing to comply with being vaccinated, it’s clear that even human rights are at risk. That said, this is certainly a time for collective thinking to come in line with a more rational approach. An approach that makes for a much greater capacity for the globe’s betterment.

John Mayor G Shock
John Mayer’s been pretty quiet on the music front since the release of his album Sob Rock in July, but his latest release is making waves in the sartorial sphere.
Mayer unveiled his latest Casio G-SHOCK collaboration with HODINKEE, but the limited-edition watch quickly sold out online in 2020. One of the most iconic G-SHOCK silhouettes, the Casio G-SHOCK Ref. 6900PT80 by John Mayer reinterprets the DW6900 timepiece with a vintage-inspired off-white colorway (below) that references the mid-1980 classic Casio PT-80 keyboard. In fact, Casio says all of the colors used on the G-SHOCK Ref. 6900-PT80 come directly from the original Eighties keyboard.
Colaboration
Speaking about collaboration last year, Mayer said the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. “I had already been pretty deep into wearing the (Casio) ‘Mudmaster’ models, and something felt cosmically right about a G-SHOCK being the first watch collab I’ve ever done,” he said, in a release. “Casio keyboards came to mind as much as the watches did. Then I remembered how
important the Casiotone SK-5 was in my life, and it got exciting really fast,” he continued. “It’s the perfect bridge between my double life as a musician and watch enthusiast.”
While both of the John Mayer G-SHOCK watches are now sold out, you can still find a number of similar watches and dupes online. Amazon has a number of G-SHOCK 6900 watches available for under $100 right now, making it easy to find an alternative to the John Mayer G-SHOCK and HODINKEE collab if you’re looking for something similar.
About G-SHOCK CASIO’s shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch is synonymous with toughness, born from the developer Mr. Ibe’s dream of ‘creating a watch that never breaks’. Over 200 handmade samples were created and tested to destruction until finally in 1983 the first, now iconic G-SHOCK hit the streets of Japan and began to establish itself as ‘the toughest watch of all time’. Each watch encompasses the 7 elements; electric shock resistance, gravity resistance, low temperature resistance, vibration resistance, water resistance, shock resistance and toughness. www.gshock.com
Watch
Key features on all the G-SHOCK Ref 6900 watches include an EL backlight, 24-hour clock, stopwatch, a 24-hour countdown timer and multi-functional alarm. The watches are all water-resistant, and come with a comfortable, rugged strap. The shock-resistant construction also makes this great for athletes, hikers and busy commuters too.
Left: An artist who defies all boundaries, John Mayer has won seven Grammy® Awards and sold more than 17 million albums worldwide. The singer, songwriter and guitarist’s skills have been widely acknowledged by some of the world’s greatest musicians.

Chanel Ready S/S 2022
Iused to love the sound of flashbulbs going off at the shows in the ’80s,” designer Virginie Viard recalled in today’s Chanel show notes. “I wanted to recapture that emotion.” So this season Viard attempted to channel that energy and joy in a collection that not only referenced the era in the clothes, staging, and accessories (purses shaped like N°5 bottles; piratically flared Louis heels), but even the soundtrack: Witness George Michael’s anthemic “Freedom! ’90”—in a contemporary cover version by Christine and the Queens—getting the models in the party spirit.
While the Grand Palais, scene of so many elaborately staged Chanel spectaculars, undergoes an epic renovation (generously underwritten by Chanel), this collection was presented in a temporary space, set up in the shadow of Les Invalides, which allowed Viard to recapture the memory of the shows she had thrilled to when she was a fashion neophyte. The show also opened à la Karl Lagerfeld—who sent shock waves when he put Chanel-branded underwear as outerwear on the runway for spring 1993.

The feeling of nostalgia played a significant role this season. Chanel’s Spring-Summer 2022 Readyto-Wear show in Paris transported the audience back to the iconic catwalk culture of the 1980s.
The vibe: The show opened with simple bathing suits draped with chain belts, destined for Supers vacationing the Amalfi Coast in 1987 or 2022. Breaking up the monochrome warm-up, the show diverged toward beautifully patchworked denim and crochet separates, then exploded into technicolor tweeds that belong to John Hughs’ preppy protagonists.
Fashion
Denim
Viard’s own reimagined denim propositions this season included a pretty, summery deck-chair ticking stripe cut into stiff little 1960s-looking dresses with bold bands of black sequins, creating the trompe l’oeil illusion of a classic Chanel cardigan suit, and charcoal denim wafted with a butterfly print.
Fashion
Inspired by the magic of fashion seen through the photographer’s lens, the CHANEL Spring-Summer 2022 Ready-to-Wear show evokes the heightened emotions and memories of the raised runways of the 1980s surrounded by photographers and flashbulbs. Romantic with a touch of mystery, the collection balances the graphic purity of black and white, playful summer stripes, and the dark whimsy of a butterfly’s wings on black chiffon.
Quote Viard -“I used to love the sound of flashbulbs going off at the shows in the eighties when the models were on a raised runway. I wanted to recapture that emotion.”
Campaign
Fashion
Punchy accessories drive the ‘80s theme home, from heart-shaped bags to neon acrylic costume jewelry. Closing the collection was a symphony of butterfly silks that we presume are already being locked up in vintage archives for slumber, ready to reappear in twenty-so years when “the ‘80s is back.” Again.
Statement
It is often said that fashion is the reflection of time, whether the clothing is a direct interruption of the current cultural climate or a call to the past for inspiration.
Commitment to image
Photography has a symbiotic relationship to fashion; you simply can’t have one without the other. But for Chanel, it goes even deeper. “Fashion is about clothes, models, and photographers,” stated Chanel’s creative director Virginie Viard in the spring-summer 2022 press notes. “Karl Lagerfeld used to photograph the Chanel campaigns himself. Today, I call upon photographers. I love the way that they see CHANEL. It supports and inspires me.”
Liverpool loves...
The unlikely style capital by Dennis Sterne.
We love you Liverpool we do, Oh Liverpool we love you’ - goes the football chant. Liverpool loves football. It has some partiality toward fashion too. In truth, it loves fashion so much, it has the annual Liverpool Fashion fest in tribute.
Music
The Beatles were the original boy band. For most international superstar sensations, fashion is an integral part of achieving success. The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, realised this early on and cleaned up shop by plucking the Fab Four out of a dated world of ‘50’s leather jackets and greasy hair. When The Beatles took the world stage in the 1960s, they had a never-before-seen juxtaposition of smart suits and shaggy hair. The popular mop-top was just as much of a cultural revolution as the new pop-rock sound of the band itself. The delectable ‘do even reached illegal status in
communist Brezhnev Russia for its rebellious statement of dishevelled dapperness.

Crypto forever?
Could democracies truly ban Crypto?
In an era of polarization, it’s always useful to examine where views overlap. This year, FIN has heard conservativelibertarian people predict that the US government will eventually ban Bitcoin and cryptocurrency (because they distrust government and think that it will always seek to crush any threat to its power); and heard people on the left argue that government should ban crypto (because it’s used for nefarious purposes and it undermines monetary policy.)
Both sides, curiously, assume that the US government-or, presumably, the national government of any large democracy-has the power and authority to shut down an asset class now estimated to be worth some $3 trillion. This is a highly questionable assumption. There are a handful of countries that formally ban cryptocurrency, including Bangladesh, China, and Ecuador, but they are almost uniformly authoritarian nations with long histories of similar capital controls. Could a democracy actually pull off a crypto ban?
The forecast
In the US, there have been next to no formal proposals to ban crypto. The challenge is not
merely technological, but also political. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that 16% of American adults—approximately 32 million people—have used cryptocurrency in some form. To create a criminal class that large would be daunting.
For better or worse, capital controls have never been a consistent American policy approach. There are a few historical exceptions, the deepest and longest-lasting of which is the “Gold Prohibition” instituted by FDR a few days into his first term. As part of a wider attempt to get a hold of the Depression economy, FDR and Congress made it illegal for anyone in America to own gold in any financially meaningful way (tooth fillings, jewelry and works of art did not count).
Countries including India may pass legislation outlawing decentralized cryptocurrency as part of their efforts to roll out digital currencies run by their own central banks (the digital yuan experiment is well underway). But it’s an illusion to think that such legislation will actually get rid of cryptocurrency. In February, Nigeria banned its licensed banks from conducting crypto transactions. Within a few months, crypto transactions in the country tripled.

What is IPA?
Understanding your beer the IPA way.
II hate IPAs. They’re bitter.” “I love IPAs. They have so much alcohol in them.”
Those are the two most common things said about IPAs, and neither of them are really true. Not all IPAs are bitter, and not all IPAs have a ton of booze in them. You can’t throw a blanket statement over an extremely broad style of beer. It’s an unfair simplification. But whether you fall on the love or the hate (check yourself) side of this relationship, there’s one thing we can’t deny: IPAs are here to stay.
But what do you actually know about IPAs? IPAs come in a range of styles, and the modern approach to hoppy beer isn’t a declaration of bitterness, but a beer that explores the world of fruity flavors that can also come from hops. Here’s everything you need to know about the IPA, from vocabulary to style breakdowns to the breweries doing them right.
IPA Styles
These are classification categories for IPAs. A “style” means that an ingredient in the brewing process or technique (or both) lends a certain flavor, mouthfeel, or appearance to the beer that is always true for the style.
fresh eye Beer
The IPA was invented in Britain: British sailors, while sailing to India, loaded up barrels of beer with hops, because hops were a preservative. The hops hung around in the beer for so long that they lost their fruity flavor and left a bitter tasting beer. So…British IPAs are malty, bitter, and onenoted. They aren’t the most popular style today, but it’s important to know one when you see it.
Pouring IPAs in a glass, instead of drinking them from a can, release all those lovely hop aromas.
