Graduate Fashion Week

I

t’s that time of year again, where the academic year is coming to an end and it’s a time which is bitter sweet for most students as they come to the final part of their schooling or university experience. I was one of those students this time last year, when I graduated from Norwich University of the Arts, and had the opportunity of showing my Graduate Collection at Graduate Fashion Week 2017. It was an experience I’ll always remember due to the overwhelming excitement, nerves and achievement of finally completely my degree. Therefore, I decided that I’d revisit Graduate Fashion Week 2018 to see what the future of the creative industry has to offer this year. I went to the Norwich University of the Arts Catwalk Show which brought back fond memories and illustrated an abundance of creative flare. The show started with an artistic fashion film, showcasing one standout outfit from everyone’s collections. There was a mixture of neo, primary, tonal and clashing colour pallets down the catwalk. And a plethora of standout silhouettes, from

cool tailoring to draped wonders and then considered arrangements of pattern, colour and texture, resulting in a truly unique show. The outcome of the show was strong and reflected many creative techniques, processes and intricate concepts which were the basis of each collection. After the show I went to a GFW LIVE talk with Caryn Franklin MBE (left), who spoke about the wellbeing of students wanting to work in the fashion industry, as well as people already in the industry. The discussion was extremely interesting, as it highlighted how

competitive the fashion industry is and how hard it is to get the break you are looking for; and the knock backs along the way. Caryn Franklin who began her presenting career on The Clothes Show titled her talk, ‘Survive and Thrive’ and gave an in-depth discussion about experiencing less stress when you use emotional intelligence tools. Which she broke down into the following bullet points: Adversity – is the fact. Belief – is what can be changed and has the power. Consequence – is the result of the belief. The talk was very beneficial and a topic which I think should be discussed before you leave university. As many students leave excited about their new prospects and rearing to put all their knowledge, skills and creativity into action; however, it’s not always as simple as that in reality, as assistant and junior roles within the fashion industry are the most sought after. Later on in the day, I attended a GFW Live Talk with Boohoo, this was an informative industry talk which highlighted how competitive the fashion industry really is today.

Virtual money bank.

The figures showed that 132 CV’s are sent to the recruitment team at Boohoo a day for a single job. And one job role can receive over 500 applicants. It was interesting to get an insight into the workings of a fast fashion brand and to learn that the process of finding your fashion career is lengthy but not impossible. Lastly I went to my final GFW Live talk with Eric Underwood (left) in conversation with Hillary Alexander OBE, where they discussed diversity in luxury fashion. Eric Underwood is most famously known for being an outstanding ballet dancer, performing in Swan Lake. He discussed how he started from humble beginnings, coming from a working class black family in Washington DC. He discussed how he had always enjoyed theatricals and went for an audition which resulted in rejection. He said he couldn’t go back to his mother and say he didn’t land the role; therefore, he joined the line of ballet dancers, also auditioning at the same location… and that’s where his dancing career began! Eric’s danced for the Corps of the Royal Ballet in London and has now branched out into modelling and fashion design, illustrating true diversity within the creative industries. My overall experience of Graduate Fashion Week 2018 was enlightening, exciting, bursting with creativity and most of all inspiring. GFW is the largest showcase of UK and International BA creative fashion graduate talent in the world, and its 2018 showcase didn’t disappoint!

Having recently celebrated 25 years , Graduate Fashion Week is one of the world’s most important sources of new talent for the global design industry. Fashion supports 797,000 jobs domestically alone, contributing £26 billion to the economy.

Meeting of the century - marking the end to hostile relations.

ust landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience. North Korea has great potential for the future! This was Donald Trump’s tweet 10:56 AM - Jun 13, 2018. North Korea’s KNCA In its first report on the summit, North Korea’s official KCNA news agency offered a glowing account of the talks, name-checking Kim 16 times. The front page of the ruling workers’ party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, meanwhile, ran photographs of Kim warmly shaking hands with Trump. It said the “meeting of the century” was held to bring an end to “extreme, hostile relations” between the countries. KCNA said the talks were “epoch-making” and would help foster “a radical switchover in the most hostile [North Korea]-US relations” It credited Kim with creating the conditions for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.

Trump KNCA Trump, KCNA said, “appreciated that an atmosphere of peace and stability was created on the Korean peninsula and in the region, although distressed with the extreme danger of armed clash only a few months ago, thanks to the proactive peace-loving measures taken by the respected Supreme Leader from the outset of this year”. It also celebrated what some have described as Kim’s rapid transformation from reviled dictator to statesman following the positive reception he received in Singapore. “Singapore, the country of the epochmaking meeting much awaited by the whole world, was awash with thousands of domestic and foreign journalists and a large crowd of masses to see this day’s moment which will remain long in history,” it said. Trump Tweet The World has taken a big step back from potential Nuclear catastrophe! No more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research! The hostages are back home with their families. Every year Royal Ascot is attended by Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family such as The Prince of Wales, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage with the Royal procession taking place at the start of each race day and the raising of the Queen’s Royal Standard. Schumer time Being funny and creating the right attention.

F

unny women are attractive. It’s a plain fact. So, can a plain woman who’s funny appear attractive? Yes, indeed she can. Amy Schumer is a comedian making the right moves and is un-plain in her approach. Films, book an interview by Oprah. Oprah interviews are almost like a right of passage if you didn’t already gain the right. Book Schumer’s book The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo is not a memoir but a collection of essays, listicles, and vignettes: the latest in a long line of books from extremely smart, talented US comedians: Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, Lena Dunham. It’s easy to see why Schumer’s book is billed as “confessional” – women’s writing often is. It is still the case that when a woman writes or talks candidly, her words are viewed as confessional because of how long women’s voices have been suppressed. But it’s also often

fresh eye

the writing women are pushed into – it’s the business model of entire websites. But part of Schumer’s huge success as a comedian – the ratings smash Inside Amy Schumer; hosting MTV awards shows – is how well she skewers double standards. “Confessional” is a very gendered word. It’s interesting that gender seems to have it’s own fashion and seasons too. Comedienne now commonly known as comedian and actress is now actor. Whoever quashed the distinction and made it universal please step forward. We all need to keep up to speed. Thank you. And yes, the book has laughs. Schumer is the kind of comedian who can casually drop bombs, à la Sarah Silverman or Joan Rivers, speak about sex with a Pryor-like candour or be as physically funny as Lucille Ball. Her prose, too, is physical: it jumps and spins. (She would maybe tell you this is as close to playing sports as she gets.) There are offbeat observations. She describes a gym as “just for women – which we all know is code for subpar”.

23

Film Schumer’s sharp, occasionally hilarious brand of comedy is reliant on a number of constants, one of the most defining of which is a frank, often brutal discussion of how she’s physically compared with other women. In her standup, she frequently mocks the vapidity of an industry that deems her abnormal while remaining confident and, despite some selfdeprecation, secure about her appearance. The plot of her latest star vehicle I Feel Pretty feels like comfortable territory then, focusing on the issue of self-image in a society ruled by superficiality. As was often the formula in her rather brilliant sketch show Inside Amy Schumer. Method A little self deprecation and a lot of honesty is a recognised formula for endearment if not attachnent to a personality. Comedians have long utilised this tool in a performance to gain command and engagement. Schumer is honing her talent well. Honing the operative word, as she is improving with comedy age. She also has the gift of assurance seemingly derived from coming of age. Recently she married chef, Chris Fischer. She describes her union as being in love and psyched. Two perfectly reasonable attributes for marriage you may say and Shumer’s confidence punctuates the point beautifully.

“The girls I grew up with they’re living normal, adult lives. So they call me now and they’re like, ‘Amy, I’m pregnant.’ And I still react like, ‘What are you going to do?”

A rose by any other Name

Macedonia agrees to change its name.

T

he country will now be known as the Republic of North Macedonia, or Severna Makedonija in Macedonian. Greece has argued since Macedonia’s independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 that the young country’s name implied a claim to the territory and ancient heritage of Greece’s northern region of Macedonia - the birthplace of ancient warrior king Alexander the Great. Previous administrations in Macedonia’s capital, Skopje, resisted demands to change or modify the name. The dispute strained relations between the two neighbours, and the United Nations appointed a special envoy to mediate. Greece will lift its objections to Macedonia’s accession to NATO and the European Union once the dispute is resolved.

In Skopje, the opposition party VMRODPMNE, said Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev had informed party leader Hristijan Mickoski that he had “achieved a solution with Greece”. Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said a deal had been reached that would give Macedonia a different name which would be used domestically and internationally. He said: “We have a good agreement that covers all the preconditions the Greek side had set.” He said Macedonia would revise its constitution for the name change and that the deal “secures the historic heritage of ancient Greek Macedonia”. Mr Tsipras said Greece is to ratify the deal in parliament after Macedonia has made the necessary changes to its constitution. www.exploringmacedonia.com
