The implications of 5G
T
echnology has rapidly developed in recent years, and one area of which it has been most noticeable is in the mobile networking field. We currently use 3G and more commonly 4G; the mobile network which is used around the world to make calls, send messages and surf the internet. However there is now talk that 5G is coming! The faster network which has the potential to transform the internet. 5G is a software defined network, which means that it won’t replace cables entirely, but it could replace the need for them by largely operating on the cloud instead. This means it’ll have 100x more capacity than 4G, which will dramatically improve internet speeds. For example to download a two hour film on 3G, would take about 26 hours! On 4G you’d have to wait 6 minutes; however with 5G you’ll be able to watch the film in just 3.6 seconds! It’s not just internet capacity which’ll be upgraded, response times will also be much faster. 4G network responds to our commands in just under 50 milliseconds, with 5G it’ll take around 1 millisecond – 100x faster than the

blink of an eye. 5G will also provide a much more personalised web experience, using the technique called network slicing. Which is a way of creating separate wireless networks on the cloud, allowing users to create their own bespoke network.

by Sophie Fitzjohn. It is said that 5G is going to be available in 2020. 5G was created in previous year and has been talked up ever since; however its thought that by 2025 the network still won’t be as popular as 3G and 4G in terms of global mobile connections. This is due to cost and the fact that 5G would need a frequency with a much bigger band width to work successfully in comparison to 3G and 4G, meaning a brand new infrastructure would be needed for 5G. Local companies within China such as HUAWEI and ZTE, are about to launch 5G trials. Which will put them at the forefront of equipment production for the new technology. However there is concern about Asia’s 5G progress. As a leaked memo from the National Security Council to the White House, called for a nationalised 5G network to keep the US ahead of their global competitors; however White House officials have been said to

dismiss the idea. 5G may not happen overnight but is definitely coming, and it’s going to be global! However the question is, is 5G safe due to its use of electromagnetic radiation? The government is adamant that it is and vast amounts of research has been done surrounding this topic. With every new bit of technology comes a new risks and questions to be asked but electromagnetic radiation is measured in frequency and wavelength, and large reviews of published research has concluded that overall the evidence does not suggest that radio waves from mobile phones causes health problems. However the NHS does state that further research is needed when it comes to long-term exposure. But it is said to be certain that the non-ionising radiation used in these portions of the electromagnet spectrum are incapable of directly causing health problems such as cancer.

Hong Kong Protest! Making yourself heard in numbers.
T
he 2019 Hong Kong antiextradition bill protests are a series of demonstrations in Hong Kong and other cities around the world, demanding the withdrawal of the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 proposed by the Government of Hong Kong. It is feared that the bill would cause the city to open up to the mainland Chinese law and that people from Hong Kong could become subject to a different legal system. Various protests have been launched in Hong Kong by the general public and legal communities. Among these, the 9 June protest organised by the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), which the organisation estimates was attended by 1.03 million people, has gained large mass media coverage. Protests in other places were also launched by overseas Hongkongers and locals. The Act Huge crowds of demonstrators dressed in white filled the streets of Hong Kong,

marching against a proposed extradition law. They fear it could allow the Chinese authorities to target political opponents in the territory. The controversial extradition bill would allow suspected criminals to be sent to mainland China for trial, but the government says the bill has built-in protections. Supporters say safeguards are in place to prevent anyone facing religious or political persecution from being extradited to mainland China. Critics say those in the former British colony would be exposed to China’s deeply flawed justice system, and it would lead to further erosion of the city’s judicial independence. Why are people angry about it? Hong Kong was a British colony from 1841 until sovereignty was returned to China in 1997. It is now part of China under a “one country, two systems” principle, which ensures that it keeps its own judicial independence, its own legislature and economic system. But people in Hong Kong are worried that should the extradition bill pass, it would bring Hong Kong more decisively under China’s control.

oyal Ascot is the centrepiece of Ascot’s year and dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne. Every year Royal Ascot is attended by Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family such as The Prince of Wales, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage with the Royal procession taking place at the start of each race day and the raising of the Queen’s Royal Standard. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also attend, as well as the Earl and Countess of Wessex. It is a major event in the British social calendar, and press coverage of the attendees and what they are wearing often exceeds coverage of the actual racing. There are three enclosures attended by guests on Royal Ascot week. Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal

anye West originally designed a shoe for Adidas in 2006, but it was never released. He has also designed shoes for Louis Vuitton and Nike. His collaboration with Nike lasted for five years and a total of three (two silhouettes, Yeezy 1 and the Yeezy 2) sneaker styles were released. In 2013, after the release of the “Red October” Air Yeezy 2s, Kanye West officially left Nike. He wanted Nike to grant him royalties, but they denied his request. West reached out to Adidas and they agreed to give him royalties. In February 2015, a year and three months after the confirmation of the Adidas and Kanye West collaboration, the collaboration officially debuted. “Yeezy Season 1” was highly anticipated and celebrities such as Rihanna, Diddy, and Kim Kardashian were at the showing. Relatedly, “Yeezy Season 2” and “Yeezy Season 3” had seen notable amounts of success.

Clothing “Yeezy Season 1” officially released on October 29, 2015. This collection was noted for its stripped down, ready-to-wear style, which drew on military clothing and flesh-toned colors. The prices ranged from $600 for sweatpants to $3,000 for jackets. Although, the footwear sold out quickly, the apparel collection did not. West revealed in a 2018 interview that he was in talks with Louis Vuitton for a $30 million apparel deal. The deal was not approved by the LVMH board and West was left with no clothing partners. After the “Yeezy Season 1” show, Adidas announced they would no longer be a part of Yeezy apparel. Instead, they will only be collaborating on footwear. Yeezy Season 8 marks the approaching 4th year of the label.

A Germanic story Writer and illustrator Nora Krug unravells a challenging historical reconning.
F
Nora Krug was born decades after the fall of the Nazi regime, but the Second World War cast a long shadow throughout her childhood and youth in the city of Karlsruhe, Germany. For Nora, the simple fact of her German citizenship bound her to the Holocaust and its unspeakable atrocities and left her without a sense of cultural belonging. Yet Nora knew little about her own family’s involvement in the war: though all four grandparents lived through the war, they never spoke of it. Now in her late thirties, after almost twenty years of living abroad (first in the UK, then in the US), Krug realizes that living away from Germany has only intensified her need to ask the questions she didn’t dare, or didn’t think to ask a child and young adult. Returning to Germany, she visits archives, conducts research, and interviews family members, uncovering in the process the stories of her

maternal grandfather, a driving teacher in Karlsruhe during the war, and her father’s brother Franz-Karl, who died as a teenage SS soldier in Italy. Her extraordinary quest, spanning continents and generations, pieces together her family’s troubling story and reflects on what it means to be a German of her generation. Belonging wrestles with the idea of Heimat, the German word for the place that first forms us, where the sensibilities and identity of one generation pass on to the next. In this highly inventive visual memoir—equal parts graphic novel, family scrapbook, and investigative narrative—Nora Krug draws on letters, archival material, flea market finds, and photographs to attempt to understand what it means to belong. A wholly original record of a German woman’s struggle with the weight of catastrophic history, Belonging is also a reflection on the responsibility that we all have as inheritors of our countries’ pasts.

Land of lakes and music Austria - where the hills are alive.

ustria, the land of Mozart and waltz, is a medley of sparkling alpine lakes, majestic mountains, and elegant cities, with a rich cultural heritage and one of the highest living standards in the world. And while the capital steals the show with its imperial grandeur, world-class art, and alluring café culture, there’s much more to this small landlocked country than Vienna. Fantastic skiing awaits in Innsbruck, Kitzbühel, and St Anton; dozens of fairytale castles dot the wonderful mountainous landscape; and twinkling blue lakes make for memorable outdoor pursuits. And then, of course, there’s the beautiful baroque city of Salzburg, set against a glorious backdrop and still immersing guests in the magic of The Sound of Music.
As home to majestic mountains, opulent palaces, and high culture, Austria’s attractions are classically sumptuous and enduring. But beyond the waltzes, the strudels, the alpine summits, and Habsburg architecture, its modern cities are proof of just how easily Austria combines the contemporary with the historic. Once home to legendary composers such as Beethoven and Mozart, Vienna has an incredible classical musical heritage, and attending a concert at one of the city’s prestigious venues is a must. But let’s not forget that some of the greatest rebels against conservatism - Freud, Schiele, Kokoschka - had roots here, which means a trip to this city is a study in both traditionalist and modernist pasts. www.austria.info/uk

It’s named in honour of the turbot (“the best fish in the world”), and it’s the debut restaurant from former Kitty Fisher’s head chef Tomos Parry. He’s combined his own Welsh heritage with the techniques he perfected while travelling through coastal towns of the Basque region to create what he describes as a more “instinctual and primal style” of cooking, slinging wellsourced ingredients onto a wood-fired grill. And it seems to have worked, earning the place a Michelin star just six months after opening. The interior takes a few leaves out of that book, keeping things simple (but not quite primitive) with wooden walls, floors, and furnishings filling a first floor space on Shoreditch’s Redchurch Street, above Smoking Goat. In the back, there’s a bar wrapped around the roaring open kitchen, stuffed with wood-fired grills. Brat is open daily from noon (no dinner service on Sundays).
