Sustainability
by Sophie Fitzjohn.
S
ustainability is at the forefront of many peoples’ minds and businesses currently, as living and working in a sustainable way has become a necessity due to the modern flow of life that we have become accustomed to. When we hear the word “sustainability” many tend to think of renewable fuel sources, reducing carbon emissions, protecting environments and finding ways of keeping the delicate ecosystems of our planet in balance. In short, sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life as we know it. There are numerous examples throughout human history where a civilisation has damaged its own environment and damaged its survival chances due to taking resources to sustain certain lifestyles. Sustainability takes into account how we might live in harmony with the natural world around us, protecting it from damage and destruction. We now live in a modern, consumerist and largely urban existence throughout

the developed world and we consume a lot of natural resources every day as a result. Urban areas consume more power than those who live in rural areas; however there are improvement to be made everywhere, as it is estimated that we use 40% more resources every year than we can actually put back, which must change. The front runners in the cause are economic development, social development and environmental protection. These are the three

main sectors when sustainability is broken down into three main parts. Within the economic development bracket, supply and demand market is a main focus as it’s consumerist in nature and modern life requires a lot of resources every day; for the sake of the environment, getting what we consume under control is the main goal. Economic development is based around giving people what they want without compromising quality of life, and this is especially important in the developing world. The biggest topic when it comes to social development for many people right now is sustainable housing and how we can improve new homes and build from sustainable materials. Education is also a key aspect - encouraging people to participate in environmental sustainability is the first step and also teaching them about the effects of environmental protection is paramount; as well as warning of the dangers if we cannot achieve a positive outcome. Also the biggest social activism movement related to the social development side of sustainability, has been programs such as Fair Trade and the Rainforest Alliance. These two programmes encourage good farming practices while ensuring farmers who produce luxury goods such as coffee and cocoa receive a decent living wage. Environmental protection is the third

pillar when talking about sustainability, and to many is the main concern of the future of humanity. It defines how we should study and protect ecosystems, air quality, integrity and sustainability of our resources and focuses on the areas that place stress on the environment. It also concerns how technology will drive our greener future; the EPA recognized that developing technology and biotechnology is key to this sustainability, and protecting the environment of the future from potential damage that technological advances could potentially bring. All these elements are crucial when it comes to improving the world we live in. As many of us have experienced lockdown recently due to Covid19; I feel that a lot of people have rethought their normal way of life and in some ways have realised how damaging their habits were to the planet and own wellbeing. From no longer being able to travel almost immediately, to reducing our consumption of impulse buys and indulging activities. There’s been so many things that have changed, but it has definitely been a chance to step back and actually engage in the present. Even though many aspects of life have suffered, many other areas such as nature have thrived as a result of human activity being limited. And I think that’s been a huge lesson for everyone and future generations to come on how life could proceed and prosper in the future.
“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Robert Swan, Author.
“Sustainable development requires human ingenuity. People are the most important resource.” Dan Shechtman

Brutality Protest! Making yourself heard in numbers.
M
r Chauvin, 44, has been charged with murder over the death of Mr Floyd, 46, in Minneapolis on May 25 after he knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. The video of the killing sparked protests around the world. The Floyd family’s lawyer has called for Chauvin, who faces a charge of second-degree murder, to have his charges upgraded to first-degree murder “because we believe he knew who George Floyd was”. Thousands of protesters have marched through central London in an overwhelmingly peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration sparked after the killing in America. The demonstrators, the vast majority of whom were under 30, chanted: ‘No justice, no peace, no racist police’, ‘I can’t breathe’ and ‘the UK is not innocent’, in a lockdown-defying demonstration. Global According to police in Germany, 15,000 people gathered in Alexanderplatz, in central Berlin, while 20,000 protesters, many of them chanting “black lives matter”, marched in the southern city of Munich. also demonstrated in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Mannheim and Stuttgart. In Paris, people gathered at Place de la Concorde despite a ban by the city on the protest for what it said were safety and health reasons. A second crowd had gathered on Champ de Mars on the left bank of the Seine. There were peaceful protests in Lille and Lyon and one planned in Marseille for Saturday night. In Portugal, thousands joined protests in Lisbon, Porto and several other cities, shouting “black lives matter” and “I can’t breathe” in Portuguese and English. Antiracism protesters in Ireland staged a big rally outside the US embassy in Dublin and there were demonstrations in Galway and Limerick. There was also a large protest in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Hundreds of people, mostly wearing masks, marched peacefully in central Tokyo, turning up on a scorching afternoon with signs that paid homage to Floyd. One young woman held up a cardboard message with the words “If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention,” while others said “Enough is enough” in solidarity with American protesters.

loriography (language of flowers) is a means of cryptological communication through the use or arrangement of flowers. Meaning has been attributed to flowers for thousands of years, and some form of floriography has been practiced in traditional cultures throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Plants and flowers are used as symbols in the Hebrew Bible, particularly of love and lovers in the Song of Songs. Interest in floriography soared in Victorian England and in the United States during the 19th century. Flower therapy They have the power to diffuse disputes, instantly transform interiors and perfume a room with beautiful natural fragrances. And as if that wasn’t enough, flowers have many therapeutic properties – they can enhance the quality of life and transform our emotions. In a 2005 experiment by the University of New Jersey, 90 women were given various gifts – flowers, chocolate, perfume and clothes. No prizes for guessing that their reactions were positive, but then their smiles of gratitude were rated from “purely social” to “true smiles of genuine pleasure”. “In every case of the women who received flowers, their smile was categorized as “true” and their pleasure was much greater than those receiving any other gift, even ones more expensive or more permanent,” explains Sayeh Rafiei, owner of beautiful London florist Galton Flowers. And while, a few days later, all the women in the study showed an increase in negative mood, those who’d been given flowers remained significantly happier.

Freddie’s Flowers Delivering the beautiful story of flowers.
F
reddie Garland, 32, is a florist’s son who started selling flowers door-todoor in London in October 2015. Today, he employs 55 people at his base in Wandsworth Common, southwest London, and says he has 20,000 customers nationwide. Freddie started from a tent (which he grandly called ‘The Warehouse’) in his Mum & Dad’s back garden and started making deliveries around the local neighbourhood in a bright yellow milk float. The flowers went down famously with his customers and the 8mph top speed of the milk float went down like a lead balloon with the local motorists. The tent blew away, the milk float broke down, but with his Mum and some friends lending a hand, it was really exciting. He’s come a long way since then and, thanks to our small but perfectly formed team of fabulous people, we now deliver gloriously fresh flowers to gorgeous homes all across the UK.

The YouTube video, shot by filmmaker George Harvey, sees the Nottingham-born cellist play an extract from the physically demanding ‘Caprice No. 1’ by Piatti. “Piatti was mainly a cellist, not really a composer,” says Sheku, “so these pieces were written to help learn and practice different and difficult techniques on the cello”. ike SB Dunks have gained fame for their out-of-the-box concepts and progressive means of redefining a skate shoe. Ben & Jerry’s is familiar with that methodology as they’ve gained unparalleled fame for their own unique flavors and packaging for decades. And despite much of fat-tongued Dunk appeal being the unusual nature of collaborations, Nike SB and Ben & Jerry’s share a lot of core values. It is true that there are no similarities between the ice cream company Ben & Jerry and Nike Skateboarding. But, with summer here, there is no better combo than a trip to the skate park and a cup of ice cream. Dubbed “Chunky Dunky”, the colorway pays homage to the ice cream maker’s distinct branding. Touches of light blue and green appear on the side panel and outsole to represent the pasture and the sky. An overlay of cow-like faux fur then arrives all around the design.

The latest plays on Ben & Jerry’s classic banana, fudge, and walnut ice cream flavour.

S
urf and turf or surf ‘n’ turf is a main course combining seafood and red meat. A typical seafood component would be lobster (either lobster tail or a whole lobster), prawns, shrimp, squid or scallops, any of which could be steamed, grilled or breaded and fried. The meat is typically beef steak, although others may be used. One standard combination is lobster tail and filet mignon. Surf and turf is eaten in steakhouses in the United States, Canada, UK and Australia, and may also be available in some British/Irishstyle pubs in those countries. Relection: Every so often a moment comes along that snaps everything into sharp focus. That moment for this issue arrived during the first weeks of lockdown, in early April. Those days were, you will recall, much like these: not a time when clarity was in abundance. As we headed towards a first peak of coronavirus infections, the death rate was rising and official figures were frustratingly opaque, while science was struggling to get ahead of the pandemic, and hospital staff lacked basic personal protection equipment. The economy teetered on the edge of the unknown. We all did.
