Sustainability
by Sophie Fitzjohn.
S
ustainability is at the forefront of many peoples’ minds and businesses currently, as living and working in a sustainable way has become a necessity due to the modern flow of life that we have become accustomed to. When we hear the word “sustainability” many tend to think of renewable fuel sources, reducing carbon emissions, protecting environments and finding ways of keeping the delicate ecosystems of our planet in balance. In short, sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life as we know it. There are numerous examples throughout human history where a civilisation has damaged its own environment and damaged its survival chances due to taking resources to sustain certain lifestyles. Sustainability takes into account how we might live in harmony with the natural world around us, protecting it from damage and destruction. We now live in a modern, consumerist and largely urban existence throughout

the developed world and we consume a lot of natural resources every day as a result. Urban areas consume more power than those who live in rural areas; however there are improvement to be made everywhere, as it is estimated that we use 40% more resources every year than we can actually put back, which must change. The front runners in the cause are economic development, social development and environmental protection. These are the three

main sectors when sustainability is broken down into three main parts. Within the economic development bracket, supply and demand market is a main focus as it’s consumerist in nature and modern life requires a lot of resources every day; for the sake of the environment, getting what we consume under control is the main goal. Economic development is based around giving people what they want without compromising quality of life, and this is especially important in the developing world. The biggest topic when it comes to social development for many people right now is sustainable housing and how we can improve new homes and build from sustainable materials. Education is also a key aspect - encouraging people to participate in environmental sustainability is the first step and also teaching them about the effects of environmental protection is paramount; as well as warning of the dangers if we cannot achieve a positive outcome. Also the biggest social activism movement related to the social development side of sustainability, has been programs such as Fair Trade and the Rainforest Alliance. These two programmes encourage good farming practices while ensuring farmers who produce luxury goods such as coffee and cocoa receive a decent living wage. Environmental protection is the third

pillar when talking about sustainability, and to many is the main concern of the future of humanity. It defines how we should study and protect ecosystems, air quality, integrity and sustainability of our resources and focuses on the areas that place stress on the environment. It also concerns how technology will drive our greener future; the EPA recognized that developing technology and biotechnology is key to this sustainability, and protecting the environment of the future from potential damage that technological advances could potentially bring. All these elements are crucial when it comes to improving the world we live in. As many of us have experienced lockdown recently due to Covid19; I feel that a lot of people have rethought their normal way of life and in some ways have realised how damaging their habits were to the planet and own wellbeing. From no longer being able to travel almost immediately, to reducing our consumption of impulse buys and indulging activities. There’s been so many things that have changed, but it has definitely been a chance to step back and actually engage in the present. Even though many aspects of life have suffered, many other areas such as nature have thrived as a result of human activity being limited. And I think that’s been a huge lesson for everyone and future generations to come on how life could proceed and prosper in the future.
“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Robert Swan, Author.

Travel Update
P
eak summer travel season is now in full swing. As a result, many countries are loosening their Covid-19 travel restrictions as the world “returns to normal” this year. Here are the current entry protocols for several popular destinations.
negative pre-arrival test and receive an entry visa. The entry visa fee also includes Covid-19 travel insurance for the travel dates. Some nations are still closed to travelers. For example, the Cayman Islands only remain open to vaccinated guests, while Montserrat is closed to all outsiders.
United States There are no travel restrictions within the United States, making it easy to visit beautiful beaches. One exception is for unvaccinated Americans visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands who need a negative entry test result. If traveling outside the United States, returning citizens at least two years old must have a negative pre-arrival test result for the return trip. However, airlines are calling for an end to this rule, so it may disappear soon.
Europe Most European countries have removed the vaccination and pre-arrival testing requirements. However, local mask mandates can still apply in crowded areas and on planes. Unvaccinated travelers must still have a negative entry test to visit France, Spain or Portugal. The Netherlands currently bans unvaccinated travelers.
Caribbean The entry requirements are generally loose across the Caribbean as it’s relatively common to enter without needing a test or proof of vaccination. Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are two more popular destinations that do not require vaccination proof or a negative pre-arrival test. The Bahamas requires adults to have a
Asia The Asian nations are starting to resume nonessential international travel, but the entry requirements are relatively strict. In many instances, it’s necessary to be fully vaccinated and have a negative pre-arrival test. Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia can be the easiest Asian countries to reach. The Philippines are also open but require a negative pre-arrival test. Unfortunately, Japan remains closed to tourists.
The world is mostly open again for the first time in two years. Additionally, there are virtually no domestic travel restrictions. Going abroad is also relatively easy, but reviewing the destination’s masking and testing guidelines is wise.

ot liking chocolate puts you firmly in ‘The Weird Club’ in my book. Not liking ice cream I’m afraid puts you in the same club only your rank is ‘Club Leader’. To me, ice cream is without question one of the food of the Gods. From childhood it is rightly considered a treat amongst treats and has the capacity to anethetize in the most pleasurable way while warming the culinary senses. Looking for an ice cream that sits somewhere between Carte D’Or and a freshly scooped gelato from the streets of Florence? adillac expanded its vision of personal autonomous future mobility with the InnerSpace concept - a dramatic, twopassenger electric and autonomous luxury vehicle. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies designed to enhance the passenger experience along with the increased personal time enabled by fully autonomous mobility, InnerSpace grows the Cadillac Halo Concept Portfolio of vehicles envisioned to not only move passengers in a luxurious environment but enhance their wellbeing. The Cadillac Halo Concept Portfolio represents future possibilities with a range of personal autonomous options and advanced connected vehicle features. “The vehicles of the Cadillac Halo Concept Portfolio are designed to provide effortless travel through extraordinary means,” said Bryan Nesbitt, GM executive director, Global Advanced Design and Global Architecture Studio. “They are visions for the next decade and beyond, showing the possibilities enabled by General Motors’ comprehensive approach to autonomous drive technology with the goal of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.” All in the concept Conceptually, the portfolio repurposes how passengers use their time while traveling, providing a space for solace and respite. Full autonomy relinquishes the responsibility of vehicle control while dramatic design and advanced technologies maintain the sensation of arriving in a Cadillac.

Cadillac A host of interesting materials are found in this vehicle. There’s quilted velvet that feels great. The coarse-looking-but-soft-feeling boucle fabric on the seats is made with bamboo, key for sustainability.

The InnerSpace - A showstopper: The InnerSpace is the halo of Cadillac’s halo concepts. This coupe looks great in photos and video, but it’s even more impressive and dimensionally imposing in person. The light-up Cadillac crest and gigantic grille are unmistakable. The arcing roofline and almost impossibly flat windshield grab your attention, too, as does that oh-so-nice boattail backside that’s also undercut, a combo that looks stellar. This is a concept car, so of course it has gigantic wheels, 27-inchers up front and 28s at the rear.

Space: The cabin is even swankier than its bodywork, but how you access this space is perhaps the vehicle’s coolest feature. The mostly-glass roof is hinged at the front fenders and lifts up as the doors open, making it easier to slide right in. The lounge-like interior has room for just two people, making it like a self-driving loveseat.

Since this concept is fully autonomous, there’s no steering wheel or pedals. But what you do get is a huge amount of legroom and a very large curved infotainment screen, one that measures 9 feet from edge to edge.

Materials: A host of interesting materials are found in this vehicle. There’s quilted velvet that feels great. The coarse-lookingbut-soft-feeling boucle fabric on the seats is made with bamboo, key for sustainability. Tech: Technologies such as biometric input and AI machine learning are harnessed and complement Cadillac’s signature luxury environment to support unique wellness experiences. Through software-defined features and advanced vehicle connectivity, the Cadillac Concept Halo Portfolio could offer each passenger a truly personalized experience made possible by GM’s Ultifi software platform.
Future Car
Tires: Even the InnerSpace’s tires are designed to contribute to its solace. Developed by Goodyear for electrified vehicles, they feature SoundComfort technology designed to help mitigate soundwave resonance within the tire for a quiet ride.
fresheyecourses.com
19
The future is under development: Cadillac’s Halo Concept Portfolio is a bold vision of the future. Right now, it feels pretty unlikely any of these three vehicles will ever get built, but it’d be surprising if at least some of their innovative features didn’t find their way to future Cadillac models, from the InnerSpace’s gorgeous design and its pillar-to-pillar screen to the SocialSpace’s sustainable materials and autonomous capability. Much of this stuff is well within the realm of possibility, if not today, then in the coming decade and beyond.
Electrification and autonomous driving will fundamentally change the role of vehicles and the experiences customers have with them.

urf and turf or surf ‘n’ turf is a main course combining seafood and red meat. A typical seafood component would be lobster (either lobster tail or a whole lobster), prawns, shrimp, squid or scallops, any of which could be steamed, grilled or breaded and fried. The meat is typically beef steak, although others may be used. One standard combination is lobster tail and filet mignon. Surf and turf is eaten in steakhouses in the United States, Canada, UK and Australia, and may also be available in some British/Irishstyle pubs in those countries.
