M

ental Health affects all aspects of daily life and the ability to cope with stress. Life Today can be very stressful, with challenges to overcome, relationships to build and the daily “grind of everyday routine. There are ways to balance stress and one of these is to partake in exercise. Even modest exercise is very beneficial. A lunchtime walk through the park in the fresh air can make a huge difference to mental health as it boosts energy and helps regain a sense of control. There are also various relaxation practices which are sensory and can relieve stress in the moment. Yoga, mindfulness and meditation can all relieve the symptoms of stress, however to gain the maximum benefit from them, time needs to be taken to learn the methods effectively and they need to be practised on a regular basis. Food is a key element in preserving good mental health. It is proven that foods which are highly processed, sugary, fried, or have too much caffeine or alcohol can adversely affect your mood. People who are mentally healthy are usually

content, enjoy life and love to have fun and make plans. They can balance their lives and are usually self-confident and have the ability to maintain friends and healthy relationships. Anyone can suffer from mental or emotional problems during their lifetime. Many people ignore the signs and pretend all is ok, ignoring the important messages their bodies are

‘Creating new neural pathways’

Maintaining good mental health should include some or all of the following. Social connection is very important, not just social media but face to face interaction with an actual person. Being active and taking regular exercise, eating well, sleeping properly and having a life with a purpose and meaning will all have a huge and positive effects on a person’s mental health. If a person can find purpose this will in turn benefit the brain and it can help to generate new cells and create new neural pathways which positively affect the immune system, relieves stress and provides motivation. Mental health is a huge issue today. However, there is help and support available to all, the stigma regarding mental health problems has receded greatly in recent years and more people are now willing to talk through their problems. Even Royalty have broken down barriers by openly discussing mental health issues which can only benefit the situation for the millions of people who suffer from this silent and debilitating illness.

Quotes “At the root of this dilema is the way we view mental health in this country. Whether an illness affects your heart, your leg or your brain, it’s still an illness, and there should be no distinction.” Michelle Obama “We take care of our dental health. We don’t take care of our mental health... I think the solution to making this world better is if we would just be healthy mentally.” Howie Mandel

he bikes are made of more than 200 individual parts, most of which he fabricates with a small team of workers in the Hawthorne shop. (Arch is possibly the first motorcycle brand to be completely assembled in L.A. since a company called Crocker made V-twins there in the 1930s.) Each is bespoke to its owner, so speed and power specs are subject to change, but in general they weigh around 538 pounds and, at 121 hp, can cruise easily at 100 mph. With their six gears, scooped-out insides, ultralight carbon fiber wheels, and aluminum bodies, they’re heavier than, say, a 485-pound Ducati xDiavel S but much lighter than something like a 640-pound Harley-Davidson V-Rod. Their five-gallon gas tanks will take you 200 miles before a fill-up. Each requires a $15,000 deposit even before that $78,000 price tag. Reeves is more than happy to talk with you about the Arch Motorcycles KRGT-1 superbikes he makes with his longtime friend, Gard Hollinger, a revered designer in the motorcycle world. The $78,000 motorcycles are based on a prototype Hollinger made for Reeves years ago; each of the 2,032cc, V-twinengine beasts are made to order in Hawthorne, Calif., an hour south of Los Angeles.

Peice of Art. Reeves first approached Hollinger in 2007 with the request to modify his Harley with a “sissy bar”—the backrest you can attach on the rear seat of a motorcycle so your passenger can lean back. Hollinger refused. “That wasn’t really my thing,” he told me with a wry grin. That’s when they started talking about building a completely new bike that would look beautiful and cruise, a gleaming silver prototype with thick tires and a gas tank curved like the fender of a Bugatti. Hollinger wasn’t convinced. His company, LA County Chop Rods, already generated plenty of business; the former motocross racer had developed a cult following of riders who loved his ability to coax beauty and power out of raw metals. But Reeves the A-list actor wasn’t used to hearing “no.” He asked Hollinger three more times—after long dinners and booze-filled nights brainstorming how good it could be— before winning him over. When Hollinger finished the bike, Reeves loved it so much he wanted more. A lot more—some for himself, and some to share with friends. Reeves hopes the company can reach as many people as possible to build a community of Arch aficionados and collectors.

“It has to make you giggle when you ride it” Reeves is known for his love of Norton motorcycles, but he also has owned Suzukis, BMWs, Kawasakis, and a 1984 Harley Shovelhead

Man Bag

W

The bag for men has come of age.

hen it comes to dressing well, accessories are often an afterthought. After all, shirts and pants are more important than belts and bags, right? Sure. But accessories are still important. And the wrong accessories can ruin an otherwise great outfit. Men’s bags are some of the biggest offenders, especially for shorter, smaller men. Size matters It’s all about proportion. Just like fit is the most important aspect of clothing, proportion is the most important aspect of accessories. Of course, functionality matters too, and you shouldn’t sacrifice function for form. But why not have both? It’s all about the size of the bag in comparison to the size of the carrier. Just like clothes, most bags are made for the average male (around 5’10” and slightly overweight). An oversized, bulging bag makes smaller gents look like freshmen on the first day of school. Or land snails. It goes both ways. If you’re a bigger guy, you don’t want to carry a tiny bag, lest you be ridiculed by your friends for owning a “murse”. So how do you choose the right size

bag? Just follow this simple rule: Use the smallest bag that holds everything you need to carry. In other words, decide what stuff you need to carry, then buy the smallest bag that can carry that stuff. For example, if you have an 13 inch laptop, get a 13 inch laptop briefcase. It holds everything you need, but it’s slim and has a low-profile. It will compliment your frame and won’t be a burden to carry around. You can also go vertical. While most laptop bags lay horizontal across your back, some are oriented vertically. These are especially good for thin men because the bag won’t extend beyond your silhouette. Luggage There’s something classy about nice luggage. Bags get a lot of mileage (pun intended), especially the ones you use regularly. But even if you only travel a couple of times a year, it’s nice to roll through the airport in style. You might even find that staff is a little more polite, and luggage handlers are a little more careful with your things. However, there are plenty of deals to be found online.

Adidas vs Nike

I

Let the battle coontinue.

can’t imagine that the two biggest sportwear brands Adidas and Nike is a shortlist open for debate in terms of top ranking. Or should it be Nike and Adidas? Depends in your perspective. If you’re a ‘B Boy’ then Adidas is probably your retro shoe of choice. If your a basketball fan then Nike is sure to be your go- to sportwear brand of familiarity. Needless to say that Michael Jordan certainly paved a way toward cementing the Nike Brand to it’s elevated height and status that Nike enjoys today. The rap group Run DMC at the peek of the 80s can confidently claim some influence in brand elevation for Adidas. Adidas Since Adidas has been around for nearly a hundred years the brand has undoubtably evolved over time. Yet, the company that originally caught peoples attention through creating Olympic medal winning sports shoes has managed to maintain a classic athletic style, firmly positioning itself as a go to brand for sport as well as style. The history begins in 1924 with two German brothers and a washroom. The Adidas founder Adi Dassler and Rudi Dassler began producing shoes in their mother’s laundry room in the small town of Herzogenaurach, Germany.

The desire was to create the ultimate sport footwear for athletes around the world. From here the brothers began the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) which was to be the birth of the Adidas shoe brand. It wasn’t until 1947 when the two brothers had a falling out that the brand we all know and love began to properly take shape. It was also in 1949 that Adi patented the now famous three stripe logo, with each stripe said to represent one of his three sons. Nike One might say that the Greek Goddess of Victory for which Nike was named is actually the Goddess of Shoes. Nike may be one of the youngest of the major brands, but it is the dominant brand around the world. In 1963-1964 when University of Portland track coach, Bill Bowerman, and Phil Knight, a mid-distance runner joined forces to import and provide low-cost, high tech running shoes from Japan in order to provide alternatives to the German-dominated athletic shoe market. 1971 Nike’s Swoosh design logo was created by Portland State University graphic design student Carolyn Davidson when asked by Knight. He needed a logo to put on the side of his company’s shoes. At the time she was paid $35

Icons Abtract

For many, the concept of abstract art breeds images of what appear to the uneducated eye as random swathes of color and shape tossed into a scene to create something the artists deems representation of a specific entity such as an emotion or situation. When it comes to photography, similar notions can occur as we are confronted with confusing images containing unspecific subject matter. But do not be afraid, there is an awful lot to be learned from abstract photography.

Sony A9 The mirrorless sport experience.

fresh eye

Product

Sony’s crammed the a9 with seriously speedy technology and is aiming it at true sports professionals.

fresheyecourses.com

B

a The Sony Alpha 9 is the company’s first camera aimed at professionals and sports photographers. It’s a 24MP, full frame mirrorless camera that can shoot at 20 frames per second with full autofocus. And, just as importantly, with very low viewfinder lag and no blackout while continuous shooting. That’s right, a mirrorless camera targeted at professional and sports photographers - a strike at the DSLR’s area of greatest strength. Olympus has pushed in this direction with its E-M1 Mark II, but Sony is promising both super-fast readout and full frame image quality, backed up with an expansion of its Pro Support scheme that will be needed to break into the pro market. This is ambitious stuff All this capability stems from a stacked CMOS image sensor, which includes processing circuitry nearer the pixels and features built-in memory to deliver all this data to the off-board processors at a rate they can cope with. It’s this structure that

51

enables the camera to shoot at 20 frames per second and do so with an electronic shutter that’s fast enough to minimize the rolling shutter effect. The fast readout also allows 60 AF/AE calculations per second, promising better subject tracking and prediction. Video The fast readout sensor has huge benefits for video shooting, as well as stills. It allows the a9 to capture UHD 4K video using the full width of its sensor, still with reduced rolling shutter. This means its 24p footage is made up from 6000 x 3376 pixels: oversampling the scene by 1.56x in each direction, for more detailed footage with less risk of moire. 30p footage is oversampled 1.26x in each direction, and comes with a 1.2x crop, but shows less rolling shutter. The camera also has the headphone and mic sockets, and option to fit an adapter for twin XLR mic input. Sony calls the video footage from the a9 the ‘highest 4K movie image quality of any full-frame ILC’, which makes it all the more odd that Sony has not included its Picture Profile system of video-targeted tone and color responses, such as S-Log2 and 3, and ITU 709.

KEY SPECIFICATIONS l 24MP Full Frame Stacked CMOS l 20 fps continuous shooting with full AF (electronic shutter, 12-bit files) l Continuous shooting buffer of up to 241 compressed Raw files (362 JPEG) l 10 fps continuous shooting with AF when adapting lenses l 5.0-step 5-axis image stabilization l 3.7m dot OLED viewfinder (1280 x 960 pixels) with up to 120 fps update l 1.44m dot rear touchscreen LCD l Oversampled UHD 4K/24p video from full sensor width (1.24x crop for 30p)

David Hockney’s big art book.

Bigger Book, TASCHEN’s SUMO-sized David Hockney monograph, is as spectacular in format as it is in scope. In it, the artist takes stock of more than 60 years of work, from his teenage days at the Bradford School of Art, through his breakthrough in 1960s Swinging London, life by Los Angeles pools in the 1970s, up to his recent extensive series of portraits, iPad drawings, and Yorkshire landscapes. Inside Never before has Hockney’s oeuvre been published on such an astonishing and immersive scale. As each page unfurls in a blaze of blues, pinks, greens, and oranges, we are spellbound both by the artist’s vibrancy as a colorist and his extraordinary sense of the conditions of the world that surrounds us. Through Hockney’s restless interrogation of perception and representation, we witness the mellow sheen of light on a muddy Yorkshire puddle, the ochre enormities of A Bigger Grand Canyon, the rustic majesty of Bigger Trees near Warter, and, of course, A Bigger Splash, with the exquisite sparkle of a turquoise pool beneath an iridescent California sky. These major paintings are joined by the artist’s drawings, photo-

composites, multi-perspective collages, stage designs, multi-camera video works, and iPad drawings, each a panoply of looking and showing in different styles and media. Hockney himself is present in every aspect of the publication. He collaborated closely through all production stages and conceived of this book as a purely visual survey of more than 450 works prefaced by a handwritten programmatic statement. As an artist who rarely looks back, the vast volume is as much his own personal review as it is a definitive record for art lovers all over the world. “I don’t tend to live in the past,” he comments, “Working on this book, I see quite how much I have done.” The book’s sumptuous portfolio is supplemented by an illustrated chronology of more than 600 pages, contextualizing Hockney’s art with drawings, graphic work, portrait photos, and text based on the artist’s own writings as well as contemporary reviews. A Bigger Book is presented on a Marc Newson bookstand. Limited Collector’s Edition of 9,000 signed copies, each with a Marc Newson bookstand Also available in four Art Editions, each limited to 250 signed copies, and accompanied by an iPad drawing and a Marc Newson bookstand
