Brexit for begginers

T

he UK voted to leave the European Union and it’s scheduled to happen at 11pm UK time on Friday 29th March, 2019. On this date the UK is officially no longer part of the EU and stands on its own. As a result, the UK and the EU have provisionally agreed on the three key “divorce” issues of how much the UK owes the EU, what happens to the Northern Ireland boarder and also what happens to UK citizens living elsewhere in the EU and vice versa. Discussions have now moved on to future relations, after the 21-month “transition” period agreement was reached, to smooth the way to post-Brexit relations. Many are saying ‘why can’t we leave the EU immediately?’ But with a decision as big as the UK leaving the EU, steps must be put in place to allow businesses and others to prepare for the moment when the new post-Brexit rules between the UK and the EU begin. The transition period may be lengthy but will it be worth it? One main change will be that the UK will be able to strike up its own trade deals –

by Sophie Fitzjohn.

although this won’t come into action until 1st January 2021. However, life after Brexit is still uncertain as negotiations are ongoing about trade, travel and security. The divided decision to leave the EU was made on the 23rd June 2016, and still has a long way to go before all is in place, however within any situation, there are pros and cons to any outcome. Some of those include, membership fees, many Brexiters have argued that leaving the EU will result in an immediate cost saver.

Sophie says.....

This is because the country will no longer contribute to the EU budget. An example of this is 2016 when Britain paid in £13.1bn, but it also received £4.5bn worth of spending, the UK’s net contribution was £8.5bn. However, what is harder to determine is whether the financial advantages of EU membership, such as free trade and inward investment, outweighs the overall upfront costs. Trade is a key area which is sure to change. Britain has benefited from trade deals between the EU and other world powers; therefore, would lose some of that negotiating power as a result of Brexit. But would be free to establish its own trade agreements. Investment is another political area which will be effected by Britain’s Exit from Europe. Since the final decision was announced, many banks and financial firms have begun establishing EU bases to take their operations out of the UK. On the flip side, Brexit campaigners have suggested that free from EU rules and regulations, Britain could reinvent itself, and be comparable to a Singapore-style supercharged economy. Immigration is another important area of this whole process and will have a noticeable knock on effect. Under EU law, Britain cannot prevent anyone from another member state from coming to live in the UK. Whilst Britons benefit from an equivalent right to live and work anywhere else in the bloc. The result

New era politics.

has been a huge increase in immigration into Britain, particularly from Eastern and Southern Europe. Brexit could mean that immigration could be dramatically cut, resulting in Britain regaining control of the borders and the British Government setting new rules. Jobs are also an uncertain subject when it comes to Brexit’s knock on effects. If trade and investment falls after Brexit, jobs would be lost, but if they rose, new jobs would be created. On the other hand, free movement of people across the EU also opened up job opportunities for British workers seeking to work elsewhere in Europe. No matter the outcome, there will be compromises on either side. One area of this whole process which has said to remain the same is how the UK and EU act when it comes to security. Senior military figures have said that the EU is an increasingly important pillar of our security, especially at a time of instability, and they hope for this support to continue. Cutting ties with the EU will allow Britain to re-establish itself as a truly independent nation with connections to the rest of the world, and it would regain control over fishing rights around its coast, for example. But what life will really be like after the Brexit process is done, is over 10 months away; and even after that, negotiations, changes and compromises will still be ongoing.

Quote - I’ve got to see the Brexit process through. we won the war, but we must win the peace. Nigel Farage

Commodity Gold

T

he ancient Egyptians were the first to smelt gold around 3600 B.C. A thousand years later, gold jewelry emerged as the goldsmiths of ancient Mesopotamia crafted a burial headdress made of lapis, carnelian beads and leaf-shaped gold pendants. Since these early days, mankind has been captivated by gold, and the desire to own it has led to great gold rushes and wars. In 1511, King Ferdinand of Spain declared, “Get gold, humanely if you can, but at all hazards, get gold!” Today, gold is sought after for investment purposes and a strong jewelry market and is also used in the manufacturing of numerous electronic and medical devices. Supply Unlike oil or coffee, however, gold isn’t consumed. Almost all the gold ever mined is still around. There is some industrial use for gold, but that hasn’t increased demand as much as jewelry or investment. The World Gold Council’s 2017 figures show that total demand was 4,071 tons, with only 332.8 tons going to the tech sector. The rest was investment, at 371.4 tons, jewelry, at 2,135.5 tons, bar and coin demand of 1,029.2 tons, and ETFs et al, at 202.8 tons. Back in 2001, when gold prices were nearing all-time lows (at

least since ownership of bullion was re-legalized in the 70s), jewelry accounted for 3,009 tons, while investment was at 357 tons, and tech required 363 tons of gold. Price Drivers Gold has experienced some of the most dramatic price fluctuations in the commodity markets. Some factors that drive price include: Central bank reserves Value of the U.S. dollar l Interest rates l Worldwide jewelry and industrial demand (including from emerging economies) l Wealth protection (especially during times of geopolitical tensions) l l

The price of gold is moved by a combination of supply, demand, and investor behavior. That seems simple enough, yet the way those factors work together is sometimes counterintuitive. For instance, many investors think of gold as an inflation hedge. That has some common-sense plausibility, as paper money loses value as more is printed, while the supply of gold is relatively constant. As it happens, mining doesn’t add much year to year.

Progression Ermenegildo Zegna is the largest luxury menswear brand in the world. The heritage drives forward with a development in fabric and manufacturing. So much so that the farming of sheep wool is such that certain sheep are farmed in a manor that produces wool as soft as cashmere. TECHMERINO™ has been developed which has introduced the ‘Wash and go Suit’. Fibre refinement also means a non shrink washable wool.

Italian Chic Up in the Biella region, at the Zegna Lanificio, or mill, the story starts in the vast cellars where shorn fleeces arrive from Australia, South Africa and Mongolia, and where there is a vault for the precious vicuña. In this vertical operation, the raw material, which Anna Zegna (Image Director and President ) describes as “like wool tagliatelle” is washed, carded, dyed, woven and finished, with computers as part of the process, but mostly with judgments by eye and the touch of human hands.

Manufacturing Note: Built on its heritage as one of the leading global producers of fine fabrics, the Milanese brand is renowned for luxurious tailoring. At the very top end of the manufacturing output is the ‘Made To Measure’ service. Having turned the wool into cloth, the bales of material are sent to the artisanal suit factory at Stabio, on the Swiss side of the Italian border, where the cloth becomes a suit.

The suit is here to stay The idea of a streamlined, modern menswear and high-end fabric still touched by human hands is not just a fairytale. Zegna is able to deliver fully customised items within four to five weeks, and requires only two fittings. The made-to-measure suit is both priceless and personal for the wearer. The clothes take form thanks to the hands of expert tailors who knowingly drape and sew the fabric, defending the traditions of exquisite craftsmanship and demonstrating that there is still the need for a style exclusively personal and individual in the dictionary of Zegna.

Happy in Yellow Interior analysis at Fashion Flooring & Interiors by Dennis Sterne.

D

id you realize that yellow food releases serotonin? It’s amazing what you can learn at Fashion Flooring & Interiors. As abstract as that sounds, a conversation about colour got linked to food, which is always acceptable in my book. My visit with interior designer Kathryn Hughes engaged much talk about all things interiors. Colour is certainly a huge component of the sensory experience and is clearly important when making your decisions on interior decorating. Certain colours have a marked effect on mood. This in turn should bring to mind how you may want to be inspired and stimulated in a room. So as well as functionality, colour will always be an important combination for consideration in making an interior work for you. I learnt

fresh eye

that green is a good colour for that study area or study room you may have in mind. Since green is the colour of nature and wide open spaces, it would make connective sense that green on the inside thereto would promote optimism, clarity of thought and a sense of well-being. I agree with Kathryn on this. Visualize Talking to Kathryn about interiors really reminded me of how powerful a role colour and design plays in our lives. She laughs at my previous ‘delightful’ description of her in April edition which introduced Fashion Flooring & Interior’s re-opening. Modesty at play here because she genuinely is a personality who’s passionate about her subject. A good interior consultant has the ability to read a person and therefore aid in the decision making. It’s

easy to overlook the fact that a client may be colourblind for example. A lot of people don’t possess the ability to envisage a pattern on a larger scale too. This is where interior photographs help. Many of the brochures showcase the upholstery and curtains to great effect. Our discussion turned to what masculine and feminine mean in terms of interiors. Colour certainly plays a part here as well as how embellished or not an interior can be. Considerations would include the type of pleating curtains can have, flooring against carpeting, even whether throws could enhance for mood. The collection of throws available in-store is a very attractive one. I comment on how practical they are for added warmth. A further note to make is that a consultant with an artistic eye can effortlessly advise on how

u

to balance out the look of a space or room so that colour, weight, form, and texture are all working in harmony with one another. Brands to take interest in for curtains are Ado and Prestigious Textiles. If it’s wallpaper on your agenda then Textura is worth looking at also. Summer season sale is around July/August. It’s worth noting that smaller offcut carpeting is able to be edge bound. A nice highlight that customers wouldn’t ordinarily be aware of. New lighting is arriving in-store which gives even more reason to visit Fashion Flooring & Interiors for that all-important inspiration you need.

It is known for its unique bottles, which are dressed in a thin layer of real carbonfibre – which helps to explain the high price of the product, and why the Champillon-based concern has pursued an association with motor sport. Toungue Lashing What legend looks, sounds and feels like- Dennis Sterne.

I

I’m on my way to see The Rolling Stones live for the very first time. I’m still grinning despite the ‘Train delay’ message illuminated on Platform 2. I’ve planned to arrive well in advance of the main act so East Anglia rail will not upset my mood. I know I’ll be flying into orbit when I get there, so as far as I’m concerned the message board reads ‘Rock and roll baby! and oh look there’s the famous tongue motif as a punctuation. Entering the London Stadium via the high seats to be met with rock support sounds aka Liam Gallagher and a breathtaking view of a human ant colony underneath blue summer sky willfully set the scene. A scene that I already appreciate will be burned into my memory. This is bucket list territory albeit that for some Mick and the boys would have made the list multiple times. There’s a stirring in the air. The crowd’s anticipation swells and then comes the

fresh eye

announcement - Ladies and gentlemen, The Rolling Stones! The roar sent up is fit for a gladiator coliseum. You know, the one in Rome except there will be no terror or gore, just heart wrenching rock and roll strings, pounding drums and battle cry by the one they call Jagger. And now come The Gladiators, dressed in colours, and guitars in hand. The stadium goes nuts. It is said that good things come to those who wait. This is going to be better than good! Enter ‘Street Fighting Man’. Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and of course Keith Richards are charged with rock unison, boundless energy and yes they are most certainly on and in time. Jagger’s vocals are crisp. Care not what for music journalists might say about these aging rockers. I’m hearing a band that has defied age and time and it’s clear to me that the source of such defiant energy comes mainly from the ceaseless, passionate and loyal fans. There’s a comfortability on stage

that the guys possess that simply comes from the acknowledgment that says ‘yeah we’re pretty good at this’. You can see it in every foot stomp and assured smile at crowd and band member. Impressive rock royalty giving it large to an adoring sea of faithfuls. The occasional scream of ‘Go on Mick!’ gives rise to the feeling that we all desire a platform to be larger than life even for a moment. Whether it be anarchy or anti-establishment, rock & roll symbolizes and drives a vehicle that says express yourself in your own unique way. Be loud and proud of it too. Triumph Halfway through the set Jagger introduces the band members to the crowd. As each member steps forward the crowd goes wild. If you’ve ever been a fan of mid-eighties video gaming, it’s like watching a retro video game character been re-charged with energy for the next bout. In the band’s case the next tour. This is when you can see and feel the emotion of the years of belonging. Keith Richards looking particularly choked up as the energy levels seemingly overflowing from the top of his head quite literally. An awesome vision to behold. When rock stars speak on receiving energy from an audience then this is certainly what it looked like. Living legacy Being in the midst of and experiencing such raw energy, it’s little wonder how people talk

about procreation being inspired by music and song. Little wonder too then that Jagger keeps producing children and is still doing so at the ripe age of 74. My wonderment is checked again as I gaze across an ocean of voicestrous fans. What comes to mind is this is what rock success looks like. Any which way you cut it, this is a testament to a dream come true. A dream of what a young boy who may have played air guitar on a tennis racket in his bedroom has come to be. And as previous interviews have revealed, the hard work at the center of fun and ambition. It’s clear too that whatever your burden might be, the best place to leave all weariness behind is firmly at the door of a capacity crowd stadium where rock&roll is in charge and ready to make you realize that life is for the taking. For those who practice mindfulness, being at a Rolling Stone concert is, without doubt, a time to drink in some serious ‘in the moment’ appreciation. My consciousness told me that seeing this band and this time was a timely thing to do less I miss the opportunity. But after such a performance, it looks to me like The Stones have years ahead of them still. They are not about to hang up their sequined sneakers anytime soon. How they’ve all managed to retain a full head of hair is anyone’s guess. My guess is rock music keeps a rocker young in spirit and body. Long live The Rolling Stones! www.rollingstones.com

I

f you think cycling in rush hour is a wild ride, you’re yet to feel the wind blowing through your hair as you hurtle along Zip Now London’s 225-metre zip wire descent in central London. Yep, they’ve brought their high-flying antics back to the South Bank, so you can take in the sights of the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament while zooming through the air. Anyone can book tickets for the daredevil dive, which now has a new ‘Mega Drop’ freefall experience and an additional wire so three people can ride alongside each other at the same time. After jumping from a 35-metre-high tower you’ll reach speeds close to 50kph on the ride. So all you thrill-seekers better start looking lively. Fingers crossed there won’t be any Boris Johnson moments. New for 2018, Zip Now will be operating THREE 225 meter-long zip wires. This will allow friends and family to ride alongside each other for even more fun and thrills. www.zip-now.co
