Getting political with

I

dentity politics is the tendency for people of a particular race, religion, gender or ethnicity to organize politically around that specific interest for the sole purpose of advancing that interest without concern or regard for any larger group or collective. Identity politics is most recognised in the United States, this is due to a huge escalation of their long running culture war, which has divided the country. Politics hasn’t just become about what you think, but also who you are, and that’s where the issues are; causing extremism on both ends of the political spectrum. Universities in American find themselves right in the heart of the topic due to their diversity. There are two side, right wing media, where they focus on students voicing outrageous things, and the fact that they see an abundance of non-political correctness. Whereas the left wing are known for saying that there are no such problems and that the right wing just dislike universities as a whole, that’s just one example. It’s about cutting through the culture war,

our identity as identity politics is controversial but necessary and isn’t a bad thing. This is because politics can be based on any distinction or group interest. In more recent years the groups have varied and evolved and include, the ‘Me too movement’, ‘Black lives matter’, ‘LGBT Community’ and ‘Gender Fluid’. In American history, the civil rights moment was about destroying identity politics. Creating a society where people were seen as individuals rather than members of groups. As Martin Luther King Junior famously voiced, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.”He went about identity politics focusing on the specific groups and emphasised what everyone had in common, and then pointed out that some individuals were being denied less equality in access,

by Sophie Fitzjohn. opportunity or dignity. This method was proven to work and got people to sit up and take note when it came to identity, politics and equality. Identity politics has become a common topic in recent years in the UK also, generally it is seen in a negative context; however it comes down to the image someone has of themselves; and this image is made up of many different components – from the cities we grow up in, the football teams we support, the music we listen to, the skills we master, the list goes on. The argument is that all politics involves an element of identity and instead of disregarding it, we should try to understand it. As a result this would create space for meaningful and interesting discussions around identity. There’s beauty in the differences we all have as people, and its important when it comes to politics and policy that people, are treated as people. It’s about recognising and celebrating everyone’s unique characteristics as individuals and not reducing them into an identity group.

Quote - We need to reject any politics that targets people because of race or religion. This isn’t a matter of political correctness. It’s a matter of understanding what makes us strong. The world respects us not just for our arsenal; it respects us for our diversity and our openness and the way we respect every faith. Barack Obama

Street art goes Eurocentric!

B

anksy - the anonymous Englandbased street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy’s work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of the English musical group Massive Attack. The mysterious street artist has weighed into the EU debate by creating a giant ‘Brexit mural’ in Dover. The painter’s latest piece depicts a workman chipping away at one of the 12 golden stars of the the European Union flag. Banksy laid claim to the creation on his Instagram page, after it appeared on the side of a house in the Kent port overnight. Banksy is well known for commenting on

politics with his street art. In 2015, he created four artworks at the Jungle migrant camp in Calais, including one featuring Apple founder Steve Jobs, in a reference to his background as the son of a Syrian migrant. In March he created the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, a quirky guesthouse that stands close to Israel’s towering security barrier in the occupied West Bank. Despite his high profile art work, Banksy’s identity has been kept a closely guarded secret - with a network of myths surrounding his persona. In 2008 he was ‘unmasked’ by the Mail on Sunday as Robin Gunningham, a former public schoolboy from Bristol with a passion for art. At the time Banksy’s agent refused to confirm or deny the story. Banksy then wrote on his website: ‘I am unable to comment on who may or may not be Banksy’, and denied it was him. In 2015 a man sparked speculation that he could be the elusive graffiti guerilla after baring a striking resemblance to an alleged picture of him from 2011.

Armani Living An evolusion of Italian style - Giorgia Armani

F

rom menswear to womenswear, homewear to hotel, Giorgia Armani is examplorary Italian style. His androgynous approach rarely disappointed fashion critics, who dutifully appeared each season at shows staged at his 17th-century palazzo on Via Borgonuovo in central Milan. Armani’s reputation grew as a result of the popular film American Gigolo (1980), in which actor Richard Gere was featured as the dashing owner of a closetful of tailored Armani clothing. The public developed an increasingly insatiable demand for his minimalist style, and many Hollywood leading ladies became torchbearers for the Armani look at the Academy Awards ceremonies. Evolusion Over the years Armani continually added new offerings to his company, introducing perfume, accessories, a jeans line, the lowerpriced diffusion line Emporio Armani,

sportswear, and a limited-edition line of handmade couture dresses. In 2000–01 the Guggenheim Museum in New York City presented a major retrospective of Armani’s work. In 2002 Armani was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. He designed the uniforms for the Italian flag-bearers participating in the 2006 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony as well as those of various professional athletic teams, including England’s Chelsea Football Club and Australia’s Rabbitohs. In 2007 Armani partnered with the electronics giant Samsung to create a luxury LCD (liquid crystal display) television and cellular phone as part of an expansion of his consumer lifestyle product line. That same year his Armani Privé spring/summer-collection fashion show was broadcast worldwide via Microsoft Corporation’s MSN Web portal as well as Cingular cellular phones, making him the first clothing designer to broadcast an haute couture fashion show live on the Internet.

Pioneer Armani made his sartorial mark when he dressed Richard Gere in American Gigolo in 1980. Just two years later, he became the only designer to make the cover of Time magazine since Christian Dior in 1957. Armani masterminded his own soft-shouldered suit silhouette that remains a staple of today’s designs. Recent examples are the suits he made for Christian Bale’s character Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight and the attire for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ high profile wedding in 2006. Armani best described his approach to fashion as follows: “I was the first to soften the image of men, and harden the image of women. I dressed men in women’s fabrics, and stole from men what women wanted and needed - the power suit.”

Keep on running A healthy injection for mind and body by Fiona Snailham.

I

n April this year, 42,906 people toed the start line of the London marathon. Whilst the race winners, Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei, finished the run in 2:02:37 and 2:18:20 respectively, the vast majority of runners took four to four and a half hours to complete the 26.2 mile course. The ballot for entry to the 2020 race has already closed, with the expectation that over 415,000 people will have applied to run. But the popularity of running is not restricted to the marathon distance: park runs are also booming. Organised by volunteers, the movement offers free, weekly, timed 5k runs in parks across the world. In May 2019, over 600 events were hosted in the UK each week, with approximately 154,000 runners taking part. But why? What makes thousands of people drag themselves out of bed to head to the park

fresh eye

every Saturday morning? The positive effects of running, both physical and emotional, should really make us all set the alarm and reach for our trainers. Technological advancements and deskbound jobs mean we live in a world that is increasingly sedentary, yet research is continually demonstrating the need to be physically active if we wish to live into our twilight years. Physically, there are numerous benefits attached to the humble run. Health A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that runners have a lower overall risk of mortality, and a 45 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease when compared to their nonrunning peers. Regular running, at any pace,

strengthens the heart muscle and renders it more efficient. A healthy heart means improved blood flow around the body, a lower resting heart rate, lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of thrombosis (blood clots). Whilst running, the body works harder than it does when at rest, burning more fuel to support the increased action. Such an increase in calorie consumption can help with weight loss, combatting obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, fatty lived disease and some cancers. At the same time, pounding the pavements strengthens the musculoskeletal system. Going for a run works all the muscles in the legs and requires the runner to engage their core for stability. Strong muscles stabilise the joints and reduce the risk of injury in daily life. As a weight bearing exercise, running

tresses, and strengthens, the bones. This makes is particularly beneficial for women, who tend to lose bone density when oestrogen levels decrease during the menopause. If the physical gains alone do not convince, consider the positive impact on emotional health. The JAMA Psychiatry journal recently published a study which supports the theory that physical activity can be an effective prevention strategy for depression. A regular running schedule can improve sleep and relieve stress, both factors which have a knock-on effect on mental well-being. Moreover, increased physical ability can have a positive impact on body image and raise selfesteem. Who wouldn’t want that? Tempted but don’t know where to start? Alicante

A Spanish excursion in pictures.

A

licante is the capital of eastern Spain’s Costa Blanca holiday region. The name comes from the endless sequence of white sandy beaches in this part of the country. The city has all the relaxation and fun of the seaside with the history and sights you’d want from a city break: There’s a medieval fortress towering over the city and a classic Mediterranean old-town with whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets. You’ll spend mornings at museums and churches, and afternoons swimming in clear waters or dozing under a parasol. The modern tram network in Alicante makes it a breeze to get from one attraction to the next. Crowning Benacantil mountain, the vast, monumental rock looming over Alicante, is a fortress with medieval Arab origins. The most recent renovations took place during Spain’s Golden Age in the 1500s, but if you look closely you’ll find little fragments from Moorish times. If you go on foot the best time to make the climb is early in the morning before the sun is at its fiercest, but there’s also a lift

fresh eye

that runs from just behind Postiguet Beach. Everyone should get up to the battlements and gaze in awe at the panorama of Alicante, the Mediterranean and dark, mountainous countryside. Alicante’s refined, marble-laid promenade is useful for way-finding, as it starts in the oldtown and continues along the city’s seafront next to the marina. In most Spanish cities a family walk is part of the lifestyle, and promenades like the Explanada de España help you do it in style. You’ll get a real sense of Alicante’s ambience as you stroll beneath the palms and watch daily life in the city unfold around you at terraces and market stalls. There are lovely coastal views, and after dark in summer this brightly lit walkway benefits from refreshing sea breezes at the end of sweltering days. You won’t mind getting lost in the old part of Alicante, a bit like a village at the centre of town. This neighbourhood is sprawled on the hill side beneath the castle, and to get around you’ll need to negotiate steep streets and stairways between high whitewashed walls.

It’s an SUV Jim, but not as we know it. Lamborghini Urus, a continuation of the supercar SUV story - Dennis Sterne.

O

ne of the world’s fastest SUVs. The Lamborghini Urus is what happens when the maker of the planet’s most outlandish supercars turns its hand to a large five-door family car with proper ground clearance and offroad ability. Naturally for a Lamborghini, there’s no sensible diesel under the bonnet. Instead, you get a 4.0-litre V8, with a couple of turbochargers strapped on for good measure. The result is a mighty 641bhp – enough to hurl the Urus from 0-62mph in just 3.6sec. Although you could argue that the luxurious Range Rover could be a rival, the Urus is really closer to the similarly rapid Bentley Bentayga

Stepping inside the Lamborghini Urus The doors swing open – they feel lighter than a big SUV’s usually do; the frameless windows, see. The interior is more swooping and extravagant than in most 4x4s too. The centre console is high. You can have five seats but this one has four; all individual chairs wrapped in expensivefeeling materials. So too is the dashboard, where Lamborghini design meets occasional VW Group familiarity, and some new things: a twostep touchscreen rather like the Range Rover Velar’s, and a thick bunch of switches to scroll u

Beyond a comprehensive standard spec, there are plenty of options to choose from including a 21-speaker B&O sound system, ambient lighting pack, 360-degree parking camera, head up display, hands-free tailgate, and full ADAS safety package with lane assist and collision detection. There are six drive modes: Street, Sport, Track (in which the car lowers by 15mm) and three offroad modes in which the body rises by 40mm. Or you can choose your own adventure, by selecting what kind of angry you want to make your suspension and engine and steering weight.

The system reduces body roll by actively compensating for lean in corners, and together with the torque vectoring technology and four-wheel steering it delivers uncanny levels of agility.

Unlike the Lamborghini super sports cars, which are powered by a naturally-aspirated V10 (Huracรกn) or V12 (Aventador), the new Urus goes for forced aspiration in the form of a twin-turbo 4.0 V8 powering all four wheels via an 8-speed gearbox. Remembering Karl A salute to THE fashion icon by - Dennis Sterne

L

egendary German designer and fashion industry stalwart Karl Lagerfeld died in Paris on Tuesday (Feb 19), aged 85. He was best known as the creative director of French couture house Chanel, and also produced collections for LVMH’s Fendi and his own eponymous label. In his later years, Lagerfeld was rarely seen without his leather gloves, signature ponytail, and tinted sunglasses. I remember attending a small rooftop party for the press and die-hard fashionistas. The party was a launch party for the opening of a KL boutique at Selfridges. Being in close proximity to Lagerfeld, I notably sensed a shy man who was genuinely flummoxed by the attention he received. His trademark dark glasses and diet coke maintained as comforting companions and protection for a man who

seemingly preferred a quieter life. I got the impression that parties and fanfare took second place to an oasis of more private design and creativity. This was a man of impressive fashion design fluidity. A man who’s prolific design sensibilities were unmatched for commercial success and fashion adoration for decades. Lagerfeld managed to keep himself and his collections relevant in a way that seemed effortless. He was opposed to reflecting on the past, often downplaying and belittling the notion that nostalgia was ever a fuel for creativity. A modernist in fact, by means of keeping up to speed with current affairs, commerce, and popular music. In short, this was a man that I viewed as a great example of creative genius. Though, for all the pomp, fluff and ceremony that goes hand in hand within an industry where over flamboyance is so easily entertained - Lagerfeld cultivated a self-styled

34

assurance that made for a confident articulation of the business of designing fashion. Proved in point by resurrecting the house of Chanel when many said it was a dying swan with no chance of new life. Many thought he was crazy to touch a fashion label with seemingly no chance of recovery.

u

Triumph The ability to flourish repeatedly through seasons of fashion means that Lagerfeld’s identity template is a potent one. One that should inspire new generations of designers to embrace such a high level of appreciation for the history of fashion implementation. Moreover an ability to touch and feel the fashion image, such that he would shoot his own campaigns. An idea that you have a vision of what you are creating and take it to a most literal conclusion. This would include a collection of short fashion films written and directed by him. One called ‘The Return’ - a 24 min film about the return of Coco Chanel. The story - In December 1953, Coco Chanel began her incredible return to center stage. The designer reopens her Haute Couture house after fifteen years of absence. The collection is welcomed by the French press with an icy silence. Only the American media supports the looks that define the rebirth of Chanel’s style. “The Return” retraces this determining period, that shaped the legend of the designer of rue Cambon forever. Long live the memory and inspiration of THE fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld.

Interesting facts: 1. The designer’s birth name was Karl Otto Lagerfeldt, but he dropped the “t” from his last name so that it would sound “more commercial”. 2. The late designer’s beloved Birman kitty may well be the richest cat in the world following Lagerfeld’s death, as he has said in previous interviews that she will inherit some of his fortune. Choupette is an Instagram star in her own right, with more than 160,000 followers on the social media platform. She has two personal maids and eats at the dinner table, dining on Goyard dishes, no less.
