When kindness is the

A

The new dawn evokes a new awareness for kindness. ‘If you can be anything, be kind’ – A sentence that has been prominent throughout the last 12 months for reasons close to our hearts and also presented to us from around the world. It's been a tough time for many, but kindness has become the key. The quote ‘If you can be anything, be kind’ originates from the last social media post that Caroline Flack made before her death. It was simple but significant. It was a cry for help due to the tabloid war she found herself in regarding her relationship and TV career. She tragically took her own life on the 15th of February 2020 after leaving the world with a strong message. As a result, it has become the mantra within the social media world to remind people that their words do hold meaning and do have consequences. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. The world has changed a lot, and so have we. The things people used to consider little are now the big things that make a

difference. Political conflict in the UK and around the world, topics of saving our natural environments for ourselves and the animals and ecosystems we live alongside; followed by the social unrest of race relations, and the tragic deaths of many people from George Floyd to Sarah Everard have sparked a new awareness of kindness and its importance. The list of unfortunate events goes on, however. They have all triggered a response in kindness. It's a tragedy in itself that incidents have to occur for kindness to be highlighted globally in this way. Kindness is a positive

and must be used to learn from as well as for comfort. When the pandemic put the world on pause, it's been a time of reflection. We have come to notice the effects our everyday lives have on the planet, from CO2 emissions to the importance of becoming more eco-friendly and sustainable. Environmental activists such as Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, have captured the importance of these issues and have actively spoken about how the importance of kindness towards our planet needs to be a priority as it also contributes to our overall wellbeing. Throughout the turbulent year of 2020, we also stood up and took note when it came to race relations, due to many deaths and the heavily documented unlawful death of George Floyd. The incident which occurred in Minneapolis, Minnesota, made headlines around the world. It was only taken seriously due to mobile video footage taken by a teenager at the time of the scene. There was a huge uproar regarding the death of an innocent black American man and people globally protested in their millions for justice

and police reform. Due to the continued support, justice was made and changes within police departments and society have become prevalent. ‘The death of George Floyds will not be in vain. The same stance was taken when the tragic news of Sarah Everard's awful death was made public. Women in their thousands gathered for a vigil in commemoration of Sarah and to show support for women everywhere and their right to feel and be safe wherever they may be. The phrase, ‘text me when you’re home’ trended as women around the world resonated with the very real risks of being a woman on their own. There is a fine line when it comes to all of these topics. As people often want to show their support, however, this can easily turn into passion and sometimes anger; which in turn depicts the aim to show solidarity and kindness. This has been noticeable throughout many protests which people relate to as it's important to them. However, there does seem to be a turning of the tide, which suggests that people are actually being understood and not just heard. The hope is that all negative aspects that occur within the world encourage a fresh beginning for engaging a new relationship with the world and each other. Most importantly, that kindness is considered a key trait that we should all be compelled to portray in our lives whenever and wherever we are..

Quotes - You cannot do kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. Ralph Waldo Emerson

The ability to be present in body Wim Hof has long extolled the virtues of exposure to freezing temperatures.

I

t may sound simple, but the Wim Hof Method promises profound effects: increased energy, better sleep, heightened focus and determination, improved sports performance, reduced stress levels, greater cold tolerance, faster recovery and enhanced creativity. Cold exposure can offer benefits, such as the build-up of brown fat – which turns food into body heat – as well as reduced inflammation and the production of endorphins. The Wim Hof method “The Wim Hof method is simple, effective and accessible,” explains Hof. “It has proven to go to the deepest level of our physiology – to our primordial physiology. From there, one learns to think differently of oneself, and to breathe more into life.” Hof himself holds 26 world records – he’s

fresh eye

climbed Mount Everest in nothing but shorts, run full marathons in the desert with no water, and has been submerged in ice for almost two hours. “You’re tapping into foundational systems and mechanisms within the body related to alkalinity, adrenaline, cell biology and metabolic processes in the deepest sense,” says Hof. He explains that practising the breathing techniques exercises the cardiovascular system, alkalises the blood and activates the adrenal axis – all of which help reset the body to its natural state. “The cold trains the vascular system and taps into deeper parts of the brain when done in a mindful, controlled manner, which makes the body’s mechanisms aware of your will,” explains Hof. “A deep sense of control emerges from there.” www.wimhofmethod.com

Breath

Discovery Scientists have studied him, and he’s been shown to be able to tap into his autonomous nervous system at will, and with that, to activate his immune system – something they didn’t know was possible. “It’s like finding a ballroom in your own house – unexpected,” says Hof.

Prada Sun Refinement and alignment for a new summer.

P

rada’s roots date back to 1913, but it was Miuccia Prada who transformed the business into the fashion powerhouse as we know it today. Joined by Raf Simons as co-creative director in 2020, the brand never strays from defining premium luxury with an immaculate attention to detail. Never one to follow trends, Prada is renowned for setting the tone of the future of fashion, and leads where others dare to follow. Whether celebrating feminism or experimenting with feathers, the brand utilizes their archive of timeless designs as a canvas for cutting-edge, coolly-contemporary pieces that continue to define the landscape of fashion. Evolusion Women Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’s new partnership is unprecedented in fashion. When it was announced February 2020, the industry reacted with surprise and delight. With a sort of new Prada uniform, the building blocks of which are long, narrow, ’90s-ish trousers; a sleeveless, tunic-length tee with the famous triangle logo supersized and

fresh eye

implanted below the neckline; and pointy-toed slingback kitten heels in a contrasting color. “How Miuccia dresses is very often a kind of uniform one way or another, and that was direct inspiration for me" says Simons. The collaborators both have a big thing for statement outerwear, and the many clutch coats peppered throughout the lineup in solids and florals nodded in both of their directions. Evolusion Men The Prada Fall Winter 2021 Menswear collection by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons takes as its basis an intimate and personal wish for contact, our urge to exchange and relate. The foundation of all is the individual: the human body, and its freedom. The need to feel, the pleasure of tactility, results in a panoply of surface, texture and textile. Echoing the notion of sensory stimulation, geometric-patterned jacquard knits and leathers are combined with nylon, bouclé tweeds and classic pinstripe wool suiting, in both traditional and unanticipated colors. The logical conclusion is to return to the body.

Fashion

fresheyecourses.com

Ready to wear Prada and Raf Simons, the Spring Summer 2021 collection explores the notion of uniform. With pared-back, refined silhouettes like industrial Re-Nylon skirts constructed using couture techniques and sweaters with precious openwork motifs the collaboration marks a new era for the label.

Prada's fashion dialogue Examining a dialogue between mankind and machine, the notion of instinct and logic emerges: diametric opposites, the two nevertheless form a foundational dialogue to creativity. Both are quintessentially Prada - a consideration of the world, and a natural reaction to that stimulus. Another paradoxical dialogue, reflecting reality.

Fashion

fresheyecourses.com

Methodology In S/S 2021’s show notes, Prada and Simons described the collection as ‘a creative conversation in progress.’ Exploring the concept of uniforms (an attitude to dressing that has resonated with designers for spring), it featured facets of the duo’s design heritage. Simons’ streamlined silhouettes, and focus on streetwear shapes and typography, and Prada’s subversively feminine shapes and exploration of colour.

11

12

Fashion Note: Fifties pleated skirts paired with hoodies, emblazoned with slogans designed by Simons’ regular collaborator Peter de Potter. Icky archive prints from A/W 1996 and S/S 996 were used as canvases to print onto and the Prada logo was reimagined in a soft padded triangle, the only embellishment on pared-back nylon vests and trousers.

Fashion

fresheyecourses.com

Styling and philosphy Prada and Simons spoke of ‘garments are drawn around the body, held by the hand’ and in a well-known Miuccia-ism, models clutched moire opera coats and technical mackintoshes around their chests. Hybrid design was also a focus, with shawl coats featuring in-built bags and mini skirts, with soft pouches. The designs speak of a duality between utilitarian and elegance – paradoxes integral to Prada’s design DNA.. Duality and plurality has always been inherent in the language of Prada: juxtaposing different elements, approaches and disciplines to find a paradoxical harmony in dichotomy.

13

14

Fashion Note: Prada Linea Rossa S/S 2021- The collection is lightweight and streamlined, engineered to a dynamism representative of the contemporary world. Silhouettes alternate between body-hugging and free-flowing, all emphasizing locomotion - the energy of movement. Both men’s and womenswear share traits: a sharply-focussed palette of white, black and grey with the iconic Linea Rossa. As always, technical fabric innovation is fundamental. Polyester knit fabrics delineates the body, a basis for fluid layers of tecno-knit and nylon - thin, lightweight and waterproof ripstop, whose semi-translucence allows glimpses of the form in motion.

Fashion

fresheyecourses.com

Red Line For Spring Summer 2021, the Prada Linea Rossa campaign reinvents the brand’s iconic ‘red line’ as the demarcations of spaces designated for sport, universal markers recognised in communities around the world. Skate parks across the diverse terrains of Los Angeles, USA and Shanghai, China are united through these delineations - marking out new territories and spaces for activity, for unity within communities.

Keep on running A healthy injection for mind and body by Fiona Snailham.

I

n April this year, 42,906 people toed the start line of the London marathon. Whilst the race winners, Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei, finished the run in 2:02:37 and 2:18:20 respectively, the vast majority of runners took four to four and a half hours to complete the 26.2 mile course. The ballot for entry to the 2020 race has already closed, with the expectation that over 415,000 people will have applied to run. But the popularity of running is not restricted to the marathon distance: park runs are also booming. Organised by volunteers, the movement offers free, weekly, timed 5k runs in parks across the world. In May 2019, over 600 events were hosted in the UK each week, with approximately 154,000 runners taking part. But why? What makes thousands of people drag themselves out of bed to head to the park

fresh eye

every Saturday morning? The positive effects of running, both physical and emotional, should really make us all set the alarm and reach for our trainers. Technological advancements and deskbound jobs mean we live in a world that is increasingly sedentary, yet research is continually demonstrating the need to be physically active if we wish to live into our twilight years. Physically, there are numerous benefits attached to the humble run. Health A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that runners have a lower overall risk of mortality, and a 45 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease when compared to their nonrunning peers. Regular running, at any pace,

strengthens the heart muscle and renders it more efficient. A healthy heart means improved blood flow around the body, a lower resting heart rate, lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of thrombosis (blood clots). Whilst running, the body works harder than it does when at rest, burning more fuel to support the increased action. Such an increase in calorie consumption can help with weight loss, combatting obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, fatty lived disease and some cancers. At the same time, pounding the pavements strengthens the musculoskeletal system. Going for a run works all the muscles in the legs and requires the runner to engage their core for stability. Strong muscles stabilise the joints and reduce the risk of injury in daily life. As a weight bearing exercise, running

u

tresses, and strengthens, the bones. This makes is particularly beneficial for women, who tend to lose bone density when oestrogen levels decrease during the menopause. If the physical gains alone do not convince, consider the positive impact on emotional health. The JAMA Psychiatry journal recently published a study which supports the theory that physical activity can be an effective prevention strategy for depression. A regular running schedule can improve sleep and relieve stress, both factors which have a knock-on effect on mental well-being. Moreover, increased physical ability can have a positive impact on body image and raise selfesteem. Who wouldn’t want that? Tempted but don’t know where to start? Try the Couch to 5k programme, offered by running clubs across the UK and available via a range of apps.

What is Couch to 5K? Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running, too. The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks.

Santorini S

A Greek excursion in pictures.

antorini is one of the Cyclades is ands in the Aegean Sea. Back in 1450 BC, a massive volcanic eruption caused the middle of the isle to collapse. It left a steep-edged crater known as a caldera peeping above the waves, which today is a spectacular sight from the island’s clifftops. Greece’s hot weather means a long summer season during which to enjoy the views. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles. Santorini is Greece at its traditional best. Thira, the capital, is a popular place to stay – it’s perched on top of the caldera rim overlooking the Aegean. And the northern town of Oia, which also has a spot on the caldera, is the best place to see the island’s famous sunsets. The east coast Stay on Santorini’s east coast, which doesn’t face the sunset, and you might find your money goes a bit further. Plus, from Kamari

fresh eye

and Perissa, it’s only a 20-minute drive to Thira, where you can watch the sun go down – so you get the best of both worlds. Kamari and Perissa line up some great beaches with silky black sand – a legacy of the island’s volcanic past. Kamari’s sweep boasts Blue Flag status, while Perissa comes with a good helping of watersports. Santorini’s volcanic sands You won’t find beaches in the usual colour in these parts. Instead, striking black pebbles and dark-grey sands circle the island. And they’re framed by steep, craggy cliffs that were shaped by Santorini’s volcanic beginnings. Just so you know, Thira, one of the island’s main resorts, is perched high up on the caldera, so you won’t find any beaches there. The big beach Kamari is one of Santorini’s most popular places to stay, and that’s largely down to its beautiful Blue Flag beach. A dark mix of sand and pebbles, it’s over five kilometres long. It caters for holidaymakers with a backdrop of ice-cream parlours, bars, and restaurants serving up fresh-from-the-net seafood.

S

o, here she is. The sultry image of Billie Eilish. She possesses an equally sultry voice, and with 10 Grammy Awards to her name, her fan base and the 63rd Grammy Award Ceremony certainly agrees. My 17-year-old daughter is a huge fan, so I take note, lest I lose the edge in being current for popular music culture. At 19 it is clear to see that Billie has blossomed and come of age. Her feminine statuesque beauty celebrated in Vogue magazine, photographed by Craig McDean captures a radiant, beautifully curvy young woman who is clearly brighter and bolder. Gone is the signature green-and-black do enter bleach blonde new glow. In her younger years, Billie was besieged with anxiety and insecurity like many of her young fans and contemporaries. Her body was always

Her insecurities about her body and fear of being body-shamed on social media gave rise to a wardrobe in some cases befitting for both males or females. A wardrobe subject to any fluidity argument that the new generation will bring of course. These new images suggest to me that rebirth may have ensued. When a woman changes her hair, well, that suggests to me that newness is apparent. Albeit it that the old look may have become tired for the wearer, new hair is often like a splash of cold water to the face - a reawakening if you will. And if anyone can bring out the inner being and thereto the inner woman, I dare say the people at Vogue are well equipped to inspire such a regenerative remodeling. Triumph When asked what advice would you give to a woman struggling with self-worth? Billie says: “My advice to women who are struggling to find their self-worth would be erm, self-worth is only determined by you. And if you don’t think you’re worth it, that’s going to ruin everything. It doesn’t matter who thinks what, it’s literally only you that matters, and it’s only your opinion that matters in your life and your self-love and your self-worth. And you’re the only person that controls it. Everybody on the planet can not believe in you and if you believe in you, you’re good. So, it’s up to you to feel worth it.” Being present She also speaks on receiving some advice from Mel C of the then Spice Girls. Advice that has resonated and is having an effect during an incredibly fast-paced career. Billie says that Mel C impressed on her that being a pop phenonimum means that moments and time whizz by even faster than imaginable. Mel said that it all too easy to look back and wonder what happened. A case of blink and you’ve missed it. She impressed in Billie that being more present and being intent on being in the moment paves a way more much better appreciation. Billie now concurs.

Philosphy: Warby Parker was founded with a rebellious spirit and a lofty objective: to offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses. Every idea starts with a problem. Theirs was simple: Glasses are too expensive. The company gives glasses to visually impaired people in less developed countries with its “Buy a Pair, Give a Pair” program. The products are all designed in-house and sold directly to customers, which avoids retail markups.

The Spirit of Discovery Celebrating the spirit of discovery, the Gucci | The North Face collab explores the deeper parallels between the two brands in equipping those who seek adventure, challenging the status quo and quests for self-expression.

Aesthetically Pleasing Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele is a known fan of the eclectic ‘70s’ aesthetic. From disco collars to pleated lamé, his love for a vintage feel runs deep in his tenure at the brand.

The North Face, which was founded in 1966, introduced Michele to the outdoorswear brand’s archives to serve as inspiration for the collaboration. The end result is camp, in both its definitions of the word.

The Great Outdoors The collection features future it-backpacks that resemble retro climbing gear complete with rope pulls and webbed straps and a variety of belt bags. Of course, there’s also a Gucci-fied tent and sleeping bag. Model - Jared Leto American actor and musician.

Cross Over and Print The collab truly marries and highlights what both brands do best. For example: A padded vest, similar to The North Face’s still-popular Nuptse style, is printed with vintage Gucci chains. In exchange, Gucci’s iconic pussy-bow blouses are splashed with the North Face’s logo.

70

Direction Never venturing off the hiking trail, the collaboration’s campaign stays true to its theme. Shot by photographer Daniel Shea, they took to the alps. With a hazy, sun-drenched feel, models trek along the mountainside, evoking the ‘70s with photos that mimic recently developed film you discovered in an attic

Creativity Sustainable The collection also promotes the two brand’s joint sustainability efforts. Gucci launched its first sustainable collection earlier this year with Off the Grid, and The North Face actively takes steps to be socially and environmentally responsible.
