You are what you eat...

W

e all need food as fuel to survive. However how does what we eat really affect us, from our weight to our wellbeing. Well it is well known that eating fruit and vegetables, which are packed with nutrients (antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre) help us maintain a healthy weight by keeping us fuller for longer. It’s recommended that filling half your plate with vegetables and fruit at every meal is a great way to sustain a healthy balanced diet. Also swapping excessively sugary snacks for healthy sugars such as fresh fruit, nuts or vegetables will also benefit you throughout the day. Don’t fear the carb! For a long time carbohydrates have been misunderstood as a bad dietary choice when trying to be ‘healthy’. However carbohydrates are healthy and your main source of energy. Make sure when you eat carbs that it’s at your most active part of the day, for example before a workout. Think about what carbs you’re eating, porridge oats, potatoes and rice are great sources of good quality complex carbohydrates. Controlled

portions of these carbohydrates which are timed correctly can have a great benefit to your workouts and general energy throughout the day. Your diet needs to be varied so you get the right amount of nutrients exactly when you need them. Ensuring that you drink the recommended 2 litres a day of water is also necessary. Water aids bodily functions, ensures food is digested properly, and also hydrates the body which enables concentration and general wellbeing. Fancy a snack? Well maybe don’t reach for a

The ability to be present in body Wim Hof has long extolled the virtues of exposure to freezing temperatures.

I

t may sound simple, but the Wim Hof Method promises profound effects: increased energy, better sleep, heightened focus and determination, improved sports performance, reduced stress levels, greater cold tolerance, faster recovery and enhanced creativity. Cold exposure can offer benefits, such as the build-up of brown fat – which turns food into body heat – as well as reduced inflammation and the production of endorphins. The Wim Hof method “The Wim Hof method is simple, effective and accessible,” explains Hof. “It has proven to go to the deepest level of our physiology – to our primordial physiology. From there, one learns to think differently of oneself, and to breathe more into life.” Hof himself holds 26 world records – he’s

climbed Mount Everest in nothing but shorts, run full marathons in the desert with no water, and has been submerged in ice for almost two hours. “You’re tapping into foundational systems and mechanisms within the body related to alkalinity, adrenaline, cell biology and metabolic processes in the deepest sense,” says Hof. He explains that practising the breathing techniques exercises the cardiovascular system, alkalises the blood and activates the adrenal axis – all of which help reset the body to its natural state. “The cold trains the vascular system and taps into deeper parts of the brain when done in a mindful, controlled manner, which makes the body’s mechanisms aware of your will,” explains Hof. “A deep sense of control emerges from there.” www.wimhofmethod.com

Breath

Discovery Scientists have studied him, and he’s been shown to be able to tap into his autonomous nervous system at will, and with that, to activate his immune system – something they didn’t know was possible. “It’s like finding a ballroom in your own house – unexpected,” says Hof.

Wim Hof has acquired a greater mastery over cold than anyone else alive. But he says “What I can do, anybody can do. It’s only training. It’s only awakening, cuz it’s already there!”

T

he dreamworld of the Dior spring-summer 2022 women's ready-to-wear collection is nourished by curiosity, desire, and research. It is structured around a network of associations as Maria Grazia Chiuri explores Marc Bohan's long tenure as Creative Director of Dior. More precisely, she highlights the Slim Look collection, presented in 1961 and described by the fashion press as follows: "It completely changes fashion, just as the New Look did in 1947. Revitalising It's almost as if Dior anticipated a need for an antidote for what otherwise is a particular bleak and challenging time. With the obvious stated, it is fair to say that a vibrant pop of colour is just the remedy we seek to distract us from the mundane British let alone global climate. Luckily, Dior has heard our cries, and unveiled its lively Spring-Summer 2022 campaign. So yes, fashion continues to save the day, post pandemic, invasion and cost of living crisis. Vive la Dior!

So playful Playful, pop, entrancing, the scenography of the Dior spring-summer 2022 ready-to-wear show pays tribute to the oeuvre of Anna Paparatti, an emblematic figure of the 1960s Italian art scene. An initiatory journey, at the heart of a spatial and experimental geometry, it celebrates the game as a place for reflection questioning the very rules of art and life.

Fashion Note/ Jewellery: Influenced by the Italian art movements of the 1960s, the jewelleryry cultivates a pop philosophy combining acidic tones and transparency. Keep on running A healthy injection for mind and body by Fiona Snailham.

I

n April this year, 42,906 people toed the start line of the London marathon. Whilst the race winners, Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei, finished the run in 2:02:37 and 2:18:20 respectively, the vast majority of runners took four to four and a half hours to complete the 26.2 mile course. The ballot for entry to the 2020 race has already closed, with the expectation that over 415,000 people will have applied to run. But the popularity of running is not restricted to the marathon distance: park runs are also booming. Organised by volunteers, the movement offers free, weekly, timed 5k runs in parks across the world. In May 2019, over 600 events were hosted in the UK each week, with approximately 154,000 runners taking part. But why? What makes thousands of people drag themselves out of bed to head to the park

fresh eye

every Saturday morning? The positive effects of running, both physical and emotional, should really make us all set the alarm and reach for our trainers. Technological advancements and deskbound jobs mean we live in a world that is increasingly sedentary, yet research is continually demonstrating the need to be physically active if we wish to live into our twilight years. Physically, there are numerous benefits attached to the humble run. Health A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that runners have a lower overall risk of mortality, and a 45 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease when compared to their nonrunning peers. Regular running, at any pace,

strengthens the heart muscle and renders it more efficient. A healthy heart means improved blood flow around the body, a lower resting heart rate, lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of thrombosis (blood clots). Whilst running, the body works harder than it does when at rest, burning more fuel to support the increased action. Such an increase in calorie consumption can help with weight loss, combatting obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, fatty lived disease and some cancers. At the same time, pounding the pavements strengthens the musculoskeletal system. Going for a run works all the muscles in the legs and requires the runner to engage their core for stability. Strong muscles stabilise the joints and reduce the risk of injury in daily life. As a weight bearing exercise, running

u

tresses, and strengthens, the bones. This makes is particularly beneficial for women, who tend to lose bone density when oestrogen levels decrease during the menopause. If the physical gains alone do not convince, consider the positive impact on emotional health. The JAMA Psychiatry journal recently published a study which supports the theory that physical activity can be an effective prevention strategy for depression. A regular running schedule can improve sleep and relieve stress, both factors which have a knock-on effect on mental well-being. Moreover, increased physical ability can have a positive impact on body image and raise selfesteem. Who wouldn’t want that? Tempted but don’t know where to start? Try the Couch to 5k programme, offered by running clubs across the UK and available via a range of apps.

What is Couch to 5K? Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running, too. Santorini S

A Greek excursion in pictures.

antorini is one of the Cyclades is ands in the Aegean Sea. Back in 1450 BC, a massive volcanic eruption caused the middle of the isle to collapse. It left a steep-edged crater known as a caldera peeping above the waves, which today is a spectacular sight from the island’s clifftops. Greece’s hot weather means a long summer season during which to enjoy the views. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles. Santorini is Greece at its traditional best. Thira, the capital, is a popular place to stay – it’s perched on top of the caldera rim overlooking the Aegean. And the northern town of Oia, which also has a spot on the caldera, is the best place to see the island’s famous sunsets. The east coast Stay on Santorini’s east coast, which doesn’t face the sunset, and you might find your money goes a bit further. Plus, from Kamari

fresh eye

and Perissa, it’s only a 20-minute drive to Thira, where you can watch the sun go down – so you get the best of both worlds. Kamari and Perissa line up some great beaches with silky black sand – a legacy of the island’s volcanic past. Kamari’s sweep boasts Blue Flag status, while Perissa comes with a good helping of watersports. Santorini’s volcanic sands You won’t find beaches in the usual colour in these parts. Instead, striking black pebbles and dark-grey sands circle the island. And they’re framed by steep, craggy cliffs that were shaped by Santorini’s volcanic beginnings. Just so you know, Thira, one of the island’s main resorts, is perched high up on the caldera, so you won’t find any beaches there. The big beach Kamari is one of Santorini’s most popular places to stay, and that’s largely down to its beautiful Blue Flag beach. A dark mix of sand and pebbles, it’s over five kilometres long. It caters for holidaymakers with a backdrop of ice-cream parlours, bars, and restaurants serving up fresh-from-the-net seafood.

EuroVision A need for some European optimism - by Dennis Sterne

P

olicital voting was rarely more plainly seen than at the 66th edition of the Eurovision Song content. I will say the presence of decent songs was more apparent this time around than in some previous contests. Winner Kalush Orchestra Ukrainian rap group formed in 2019 certainly brought cultural flavour and colour to the stage. My renewed interest in Eurovision is such that social, political, and cultural influences will always be revealed in music. What better platform, to see a barometer of international current affairs revealed in musical performance? The winning song, which mixes rap with elements of Ukrainian folk music, was originally written in honour of the group’s mothers. The group has subsequently rededicated it to all matriarchs in Ukraine, as lines such as “I’ll always find my way home,

even if all roads are destroyed” found new resonance. The six men who make up the group had to receive special permits to leave Ukraine and travel to Italy during the war. An interesting win then for Kalush with the song 'Stefania'. Given its current invasion by Russia, this Eurovision win should shine a positive light on the country, not least for solidarity. With all the complexities of a nation's history that can bring discord, (needless to mention a Russian accusation of growing Naziism in Ukrain) its Eurovision win is emblematic of wider European support for the country. Kalush Orchestra's song 'Stefania' is a blend of folk and hip hop. The global reach that hip hop and rap have had since the late 70s, is a testament that music certainly transcends. Querky One of the night’s most notable performances was Norway’s Subwoolfer with Give That

Wolf A Banana. The anonymous duo, known only under their pseudonyms Jim and Keith, performed in yellow wolf masks with the chorus pleading “Before that wolf eats my grandma / give that wolf a banana”. Runner up Sam Ryder did the UK proud with the catchy Space Man, topping the standings after the jury vote was announced, and finishing in second place with a whopping 466 points. That's more than Katrina and the Waves scored when they won Eurovision for the UK in 1997 with 'Love shine a light'. Ryder was already a star, in that he is the most popular British musician on TikTok,

Eurovision fact: Ruslana became Ukraine's first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 and the contest was held in the capital Kyiv the following year. Hope: Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, welcomed the victory, Ukraine’s third since its 2003 Eurovision debut, and said “we will do our best” to one day host the contest in the port city of Mariupol. He underlined “Ukrainian Mariupol. Free, peaceful, rebuilt!”

thanks to his home-recorded versions of songs by everyone from Adele to Justin Hawkins to Michael Jackson. Before the event, Ryder had said he wasn’t concerned about where he finished, saying “This is something that celebrates inclusivity, expression, love, peace, joy, togetherness. And so to think about the scoreboard, for me, takes a bit of the shine and the magic out of the room entirely.” Where will Eurovision 2023 be held? The winning nation traditionally hosts the following year, but it seems unlikely that Ukraine will be in a position to host. So, might they turn to the runner-up instead? We could yet see Eurovision coming home.
