Digital currency - A new
B
itcoin the a digital currency which began in 2009 by an obscure figure named Satoshi Nakamoto, whose true identity is still unknown. Bitcoin is unlike traditional currencies because it has no central bank, nation state or regulatory authority backing it up. The digital currency is made by computers solving a set of complex maths problems. To spend these specific ‘coins’ users buy Bitcoin and conduct transactions with them using exchanges such as San Francisco-based Coinbase. Instead of a central authority validating transactions, they are actually all recorded on a public ledger, called the blockchain. The interesting thing is that Bitcoin don’t actually exist, therefore how does it all work? They are digital keys stored in a digital wallet, which can also manage transactions. The digital wallet exists in the cloud or on computers; which can also be linked to bank accounts. Investors using an online wallet must be sure they can trust the provider. This is because if in the instance of hackers successfully breaching its server’s security

measures the bitcoin could be stolen. However, there are other methods of payment, you can pay via bank transfer, Visa or Mastercard and by mobile payment too. There are also Bitcoin ATMs located in London, Glasgow, Brighton and Bristol which allow for Bitcoin to be exchanged for cash and vice versa. An ever growing list of firms accept

Bitcoin, two of which are Microsoft and Tesla. There are more than 15m Bitcoin in circulation, and the finite supply of 21m; which supporters claim make it more stable than government-backed currencies that can be devalued by central banks printing money. However, it’s a volatile business and has quadrupled in value in the space of nine months (Jan 2017- Sept 2017) to more than $5,000 for each Bitcoin. But when Jamie Dimon of J P Morgan described it as a fraud it lost 10%. The way in which Bitcoin is used has caused concern and controversy. Bitcoin is often used as an anonymous way to carry out large crossborder money transfers; which has linked it to drug dealing and money laundering due to the nature of the process. It was also used on the online black market site Silk Road, a platform for selling illegal drugs. In addition to this, on exchanges, fractions or “bits” can be bought instead of a complete bitcoin and transaction fees can vary according to the exchange or broker, but are typically up to 1% of the currency bought; plus bank transaction charges. Fees of up to 1% can

also apply on sales. However, the bitcoin has been big news since the beginning of this year as reports have suggested that the bitcoin bubble is bursting! The cryptocurrency has lost 40% in a matter of weeks, and is expected to drop further according to a leading team of expert economists. Also regulations in South Korea signaled again in January this year that they were considering a ban on the digital currency exchanges, they account for up to 15% of daily Bitcoin trading. Capital Economics have also dismissed all claims that the bitcoin and its imitators could replace established currencies. The future of Bitcoin is unpredictable, however triggers for the bubble to burst could be as a result of a continued crackdown by regulators or a major hacking attempt. When the bitcoin bubble will fully burst no one knows, but prices could rise yet again before they fall even further. However, it’s said that even if trading in the currencies is outlawed in the future, the blockchain technology behind the phenomenon will have a lasting impact; as it has the possibility to transform the financial system and have applications elsewhere.

Branding Time
O
A measurement of the never ending, on your wrist.
MEGA is one of the world’s most influential watch brands, with numerous precision records, inspired design and a commitment to innovation. For more than 160 years, the timepieces have recorded the planet’s history. They have also served with distinction in space, in the oceans’ depths and on the wrists of world leaders, explorers and men and women who appreciate OMEGA’s blend of performance and design. The Omega Seamaster may be most quickly recognized as the “James Bond watch,” but the watch’s history dates back to 1948 when it debuted in celebration of Omega’s 100th anniversary. The model was an immediate hit and became the brand’s best seller. Today it remains the oldest model in Omega’s current collection. Omega Seamaster’s Original Design Jumping back a little bit: in 1932, Omega debuted its Marine watch which was worn
by the “father of modern diving” Yves Le Prieur, a French navy officer and inventor of the modern scuba mask and tank. Later, in 1936, explorer Charles William Beebe wore the Omega Marine watch while riding in a bathysphere (which was an unpowered sea submersible that was lowered into the ocean via a cable) to a depth of 14 meters off the coast of Bermuda. So by 1948, Omega was a brand well-respected for its robust divers’ watches, and it further bolstered that reputation with the introduction of the Omega Seamaster. The first Omega Seamaster was modeled after the waterproof wristwatches made for and worn by the British military during World War II. What distinguished the Seamaster from its diving watch predecessors was its O-ring gasket which improved its water-resistance. Previously water-resistant watches relied on lead or shellac gaskets which were easily affected by temperature changes like those a diver would experience at various depths.

Merge with sea and sky for an ethereal experience. Relax, go Infinity Pool.
T
he infinity pool design concept is said to have originated in France, where one of the first vanishing edge designs was utilized in the Stag Fountain at the Palace of Versailles in the early 1400s. The combination of their extraordinary location and impressive design achieves a boundless effect and seamless union between architecture and landscape. They require extensive structural, mechanical, and architectural detailing. Since they are often built in precarious locations, sound structural engineering is paramount. Best described as a reflecting or swimming pool where the water flows over one or more edges, producing a visual effect of water with no boundary. Such pools are often designed such that the edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, or with the sky. Escape Before you know it, summer will have arrived. Consider a sensory get away where everything simply floats. Make an infinity pool your inclusion for resort or hotel destination.

Confident mood Delivering assured flavour at The Lemon Tree by Dennis Sterne.
M
y 2018 quest to find what confidence looks like in a service, came via a catch up with Luke Fishpool. Very often people refer to self-help and rulebooks to inform them on how best to perform, interact and simply be. Little surprise then that the gathering of such useful information comes from a collection of real-life scenarios. My revelation came during a seasonal meeting with the owner and head chef of The Lemon Tree. Luke Fishpool explained that his first rule in gaining self-confidence in his own product and service is ‘not to compromise on a discerning idea of quality’. If there is a compromise on quality then you’re left with something less than extraordinary. I acknowledge his wisdom and see that his understanding is derived from twenty-one years of applied passion. A passion that

means cooking and serving up food with the appropriate quality checks and applied ethics delivers something that people grow to trust and love. I’ve often seen that the character of an establishment leads from the top down. Luke’s character is one of calm consideration. His implemented quality has indeed filtered through the presentation of a restaurant that’s hopeful for an interior cosmetic facelift this year. Watch that space. We talk about how best to serve customers with the most challenging expectations. Then a hilarious story about a misinterpretation of bubble and squeak leaves us laughing. One that is best left to your own imagination. It’s clear that some discerning foodies (a modern term too frivolous to some) do enjoy a sharing of the knowledge behind say, the wine list offering. Since Harry, wine connoisseur, and son of Luke

left to return to education, the baton has been handed over to Daisy, the restaurant manager, and new wine speaker if you will. Attention to the wine list is an area for a chef not to overlook as customer appreciation for wine and it’s complimentary attributes evolves. To this end, ‘the wine list will be revamped soon’ says Luke. He says that the restaurant got through the busy time of Christmas with a measure of ‘extra motivation and service’. Which stands for Xmas. Such novelty, but a notably astute address to detail. He reflects on how he genuinely enjoys the business of preparing a great dining experience for the public. Certainly, it is the enjoyment that holds the key to making the restaurant a success and drives its continuity. So we agree with the notion that one of the secrets to The Lemon Tree’s success is indeed its partaking in enjoyment. It’s an intriguing reality that discernment and quality can actually intimidate some customers so it’s important to provide an antidote to relax the dining experience. An ‘air of friendliness and a smile is very important’ says Luke. A meeting with Grand Piano history at Abbey Road Studios by Dennis Sterne.
n invite to the legendary Abbey Road Studios is not one turned down lightly. Needless to say I turned up to feel whether I’d be moved by one of music’s greatest hang outs. I was moved. Plenty of photos of The Beatles and various legends on the walls that really must have ears. Although I’m more of a Rolling Stones man, to be in the same studio where album Sgt Pepper’s lonely Hearts Club Band was crafted really does make an impression on the senses. So, there I was among a gathering of press pundits and perhaps a sprinkling of music fans to see and hear the sounds of the latest Steinway & Sons grand piano Sunburst offering (see overleaf). Beautiful is is too with it’s sunburst finish on the inside of the keyboard cover and lid. Steinway & Sons celebrates its 165th birthday this year.

Back story An American-German piano company, founded in 1853 in Manhattan, New York City, the United States, by German immigrant Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (later known as Henry E. Steinway). The company’s growth led to the opening of a factory in Queens, New York City, the United States, and a factory in Hamburg, Germany. The factory in Queens supplies the Americas and the factory in Hamburg supplies the rest of the world. The STEINWAY grand is the gold standard of musical instruments, representing 165 years of dedication to craftsmanship and uncompromised expression. It is for these reasons that over 19 out of 20 concert pianists choose the STEINWAY grand piano — and why the instrument remains at the heart of cultured homes the world over.

The Infinity Pen A unique pen showcasing a 4.5 billion year old meteorite.
I
nfinity was created by a team of designers who were inspired by the video footage of the Chelyabinsk Meteorite entering the Earth’s atmosphere on 15th February 2013. Their objective was to share this amazing 4.5 billion year old artifact with the world showcased in something that you can use every day. Scientists think the asteroid that caused the Chelyabinsk explosion was about 65 feet (20 meters) wide. On Feb. 15, 2013, this space rock slammed into Earth’s atmosphere at about 40,000 mph (64,000 km/h), eventually detonating about 18 miles (29 kilometers) above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. “We wanted to design something that puts this amazing piece of the universe in the palm of your hands,” Infinity Pen founder James Glass said in a statement. His team sourced the Chelyabinsk rocks from a reputable meteorite broker and had enough material to make 800
pens, Infinity Pen representatives told Space. com. If the pens don’t sell out during the Kickstarter campaign, the remainder will retail for $125. www.peninfinity.com

Superfood minus the
T
he term “superfood” is used a lot, but what does it actually mean? The official definition just means a food that is nutrient dense but watch out because that can mean different things to different people. Some of the foods that marketers and ill-informed journalists reference as “super” are anything but. Or, they just have mediocre nutrition that is over-hyped. A good example of an overrated food is kale. That may bring grasps, because it seems to be everywhere these days. You know the hype has climaxed when even McDonald’s is testing it out in Canada and Southern California. So why do we say kale is overhyped? Because the measure of its antioxidant content (known as ORAC) is 1,770 per 100 grams. Sure that’s good, but it’s by no means amazing. Red leaf lettuce is 2,426 and you don’t hear anyone talking about that. Top 10 What follows are the 10 best superfoods not based on hype, but rather on measurable antioxidant content.
