apan has always been known as the “land of the rising sun. European names for the country probably originated from the travels of the ancient explorer Marco Polo. Today the Geisha are believed to be the custodians of Japanese culture and are one of the most recognised symbols of Japan. Performing artists experienced in playing a range of musical instruments, traditional drama and engaging in in-depth Japanese conversations. The Geisha have managed to evolve from the old to the new culture and are still thriving in the 21 st century. Food is also an important element of Japanese cultiure. It’s precise and highly detailed technically and has a unique presentation. Rice has been an essential food source for many centuries and is used to make basic products made in Japanese cuisine such as rice cakes. Each region in Japan has its own variety of speciality dishes with specially selected ingredients. An old cultural sport celebrated in Japan is sumo wrestling which is the oldest sport in Japan. It has very strict rules which even today must be adhered too. By the Rishiskis or

and new wrestlers who contend in a Dohyo or wrestling ring! The winner forces the opponent to the ground or out of the Dohyo. This sport is still very popular today and there are approximately six Basho a year. Other old cultural arts include Noh which is traditional Japanese theatre. The music, dance and drama all originate from the 14 th century. Origami, or the art of paper folding is also related to old Japanese culture but is still practised today, as is ikebana or flower arrangement. New culture comes in various forms. Japanese fashion has truly influenced global style by being futuristic in addition to keeping with tradition such as with the kimono and creating luxury brands. Cafes are also an evolving culture in Japan. Cat cafes are for cat lovers or people who want to interact with cats whilst enjoying a coffee. The idea originated in Taiwan and then became popular in Tokyo. Novo cat cafes are popping up globally. Manga, another new cultural shift, comic book art/drawings and characters depicting a story that caters different age groups. Anime is a moving picture or cartoon with stories based on Manga but in greater detail. Famous Animes such as Pokemon and
Cultural shift by Sophie Fitzjohn. Naruto have become a global phenomenon. Japanese culture has managed to span from its ancient origins right up to the present day. The country still manages to advertise and promote the old cultures which have become famous all over the world, in addition to introducing new and exciting culture which will surely become established Japanese traditions.

Origami In modern usage, the word “origami is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin. The goal is to transform a flat sheet square of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Chocolate heaven Think indulgence, think Paul A.Young.
V
oted as one of the Top 10 Best Chocolate Shops in the World by National Geographic! Award-winning author and master chocolatier Paul A. Young deserves the accolades he receives for his creativity and mastery with all things chocolate. Walk into his tiny Camden Passage original chocolate shop and inhale the intoxicating aroma of fresh chocolate being made on-site. Young is one of the British chocolatiers who launched the chocolate revolution in London about 15 years ago, casting aside the overly sweet British chocolate of old for the fresh and innovative chocolate offerings that you’ll now find in at least a dozen top-notch chocolatiers in the capital city. Try his dark chocolate sea salt caramel pecan brownies—guaranteed to seduce every unsuspecting chocolate lover.
While several European countries are known for their fabulous chocolate-making, the world hosts thousands of exceptional chocolatiers—in some unexpected places. Top chocolatiers generally work with couverture (first-rate chocolate containing a high percentage of cocoa butter) to make their creations, versus fresh cocoa beans, although an increasing number now experiment with bean to bar. Some makers even grow their own cacao beans. Direct contact between growers and makers is the best-case scenario for sustainable, or at the very least fair trade, chocolate. Virtually every country on the planet produces terrific chocolate, so look for the local flavor when traveling. Just be sure to read the labels! If sugar is listed as the main ingredient, quickly put it down and find a bar in which cocoa (mass, solids, or liquor) shines.

Throwing dice Printing press and the FT man by Dennis Sterne.
J
ohn Bradley is a man of boundless energy. I was astounded to find that he works at The Financial Times full time given the quantity of art print that he produces. But like many artists he says it’s his eutopia, a form or relaxation. He explains that working with the hands is incredibly theraputic, ‘like gardening’, he says. I know what he means. Cooking, gardening, sowing seeds. A distint sense of nourishment that brings the human experience closure to a natural vocation. Curious thought then that our earliest artists - the cave painters were simply doing what came naturally. Some of us are old enough to have seen copper plate printing machines in action, then the future brought us the 3D printer of course. There is something uniquely beautiful about ink displacement to paper and this practice is wonderfully reimagined in the form of deconstruction and reconstruction by John in his printing process. He says for a series of his prints, he cuts them up, numbers them from one to six and throws dice to determine their
orientation. It’s moments like that that save me the extra thought in coming up with titles for features so I dutifully thanked him. He chuckled. Once again Instagram proves a great platform to display and reach an audience. He says it’s amazing how many people doing similar things and of like mind connect on Instagram. It’s the platform that brought me to his online gallery and what a great find it is. History John trained as a printer from 1971-76 gaining an ONC Certificate (Ordinary National Certificate). He then attended Reading Art College between 1975-76 completing a Design for Print course. This lead to a Foundation Course at Oxford from 1976-77. Then came the Cntral Art College between 1977-78 which lead to Games Workshop in 1980. His first publishing role was at The Times from 1980-82 and is currently at The Financial Times full time. Some noted staying power given the decline in print publishing since our u digital age.

Iconic Three Dancers, Mills College, 1929. Few photographs of the time are as timeless and captivating as this. Imogen Cunningham (April 12, 1883 – June 24, 1976) was an American photographer known for her botanical photography, nudes, and industrial landscapes. In 1901, having sent away $15 for her first camera, she commenced what would become the longest photographic career in the history of the medium. Cunningham soon turned her attention to both the nude as well as native plant forms in her back garden. The results were staggering; an amazing body of work comprised of bold, contemporary forms. These works are characterized by a visual precision that is not scientific, but which presents the lines and textures of her subjects articulated by natural light and their own gestures.

Economic insight The country of 5.2 million inhabitants largely avoided the 2008 financial crisis that hit the rest of the world thanks to high oil prices that boosted its leading industry, oil production. Despite a halving of crude prices since mid-2014, Oslo has carefully managed its oil wealth, pooling its revenues into a sovereign wealth fund that is the world’s largest. The government takes a small percentage of the fund’s value for its state budget every year, which has helped shelter it from the deep budget cuts other countries have had to make.

Norway moved from fourth spot to the top spot in the report’s rankings, which combines data compiled by economists that are averaged over three years from 2014 to 2016. The country edged past previous champ Denmark, which fell to second with Iceland, Switzerland and Finland rounding out the top five.
