Sophie says.....

Has the art of seduction and romance been replaced by swipe left and right? by Sophie Fitzjohn.

I

n this day and age, dating, finding a companion or building a relationship is no longer built around meeting someone by chance or spontaneously going on a date. The Internet has taken over many aspects of people’s lives, and this is one of them! The rise of the dominant social media dating apps have proven that you can potentially find love without even having to meet the person! The question is though, do these outlets make romance far too easy to flourish, but also just as easy to throw away? Many feel that dating apps are killing long term romance, and simply replacing it with convenient and un invested bored singletons who are only searching for casual arrangements. Mobile–based dating technology has become hugely popular in Britain, bringing the lonely hearts-style romantic search into the mainstream and onto the phones of millions. Some may say that some advantages of these apps include, convenience. You can swipe left or right at any time, anywhere. You can find out key things about a person and make a judgement before you’ve even met them! Also

She loves me, he loves me not.

messaging a person is far less intimidating than approaching someone in person. However, these three aspects could also be key to the loss of seduction and romance. Thinking back to the books that you’ve read, the history classes we’ve all endured and even the family units people grow up in, its prominent that true love stories have never been convenient, easy and far from throw away. The renowned author Jane Austen could never have written her novels about the slow, exquisite torture of love in an age of apps such as Tinder. People used to have to work hard to find ‘the one’ by overcoming obstacles consisting of social class differences, disapproval and also the law. It’s now takes a lot less effort and time to possibly find someone compatible due to the accessibility of dating apps. This way of finding a possible love interest is easier; however, it isn’t based around real life scenarios, chance meetings, emotional connections, or that butterfly gut feeling, which strongly suggests potentially for a committed, long lasting and loving relationship.

Quotes - When you really don’t like a guy, they’re all over you, and as soon as you act like you like them, they’re no longer interested. Beyonce Knowles.

PowerShot G1 X Mark III

he PowerShot G1 X Mark III is the first APS-C format compact camera to feature a zoom lens, making it something quite unique. Reasonably compact with a 24MP APS-C sensor and built-in 24-72mm F2.8-5.6 lens. It features the same Dual Pixel autofocus system found on modern Canon DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It’s smaller and much lighter than its predecessor and its design is nearly identical to that of the PowerShot G5 X. It’s ‘Dual Sensing’ image stabilization system reduces shake by up to four stops. Other features include a fully articulating touchscreen display, OLED electronic viewfinder with “touchpad AF,” 7 fps burst shooting with continuous AF and 1080/60p video capture. The Mark III’s connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. The body is both dust and weather resistant. The original PowerShot G1 was launched in 2000, and for a while that camera and its successors were the obvious choice when it came to choosing an enthusiast compact. The Mark III is the latest in a long line of enthusiast-focused compact cameras, designed

for photographers looking for something to complement their DSLR, or for those looking for a versatile alternative to a DSLR in a relatively compact body. Cafe Exclusive...

Aussie Cafe A coffee house serving up great coffee and more by Dennis Sterne.

I

magine for a moment that a new coffee house opening meant great coffee enjoyment . Not just drinkable coffee but the kind that does make the drinker pause, then realise that enjoyable coffee is a rare experience on the high street. Regardless of multiple chains and the numerous cafes throughout cities and rural towns, decent coffee appears to be in hiding. Search no further, Wattle & Co is in town. Bishop’s Stortford to be precise and it is alive and well. What they serve up in delicious coffee is matched by great pastries, breakfast, brunch and lunch. Food is primarily organic with vegetarian and vegan options. My visit resulted in an unexpected food tasting and coffee sipping cereomy that I remember for the reason of a pleasurable savouring experience. It really is simple to note what enjoyable dining is. It’s memorable. Owner, Simeon Michael Clampett Hewitson

giggles enthuisiastically at my wonderment for every mouthful of food sampled. This is clearly a man with energy and a drive to please the taste buds of Stortfordians. An expression that I’ve recently been acquainted. Rural towns have a way in owning their own sensibilities and Bishop’s Stortford is no different. Simeon was born in Australia and has had a regional journey that can only embelish his experience and an understanding of culinary expression. His journey started in Townville, then Rockhamton, Adelaide, Darwin then Perth. I’m supposing that movement of that kind eventually finds a place to dwell. Not before of course at little UK jig from Broxbourne to Ware, Bishop’s Stortford, Surbiton and back to Bishop’s Stortford again. I will, say that the town is better for it, due to the wonderful opening that the Wattle & Co is. Let not my photo fool you, for it was taken at closing time. The house is notably u u

busy during the day due to great servings and service. Taste. The sampling was a delight and I can recommend every dish tried from - apple and cinnamon cake to the ‘oven destroyer’ a taste of pastry buttery goodness. The Frittata Muffin is like a quiche but better described as it’s older cousin just because it tasted more interesting than any quiche that I can recall. Ingredients: Butternut squash, omlette, spinach, bacon, quinoa and not least gluten free. I affectionately nick-named Simeon The Bread Man on account of the fact that when I see him in town he’s usually got a fresh baked loaf of bread under his arm. He tells me that bread is given to local charities which warms my heart as far too many food outlets waste food needlessly. Coffee. I tried the Caravan Coffee which I’m told is one of the house favourites. Creamy, full bodied, rich and smoky, warm round taste with notable pleasant lingering after note. If you suspect I’ve just described a wine then it’s simply beause a good coffee is able

to conjur more from a description and it’s all to do with taste. One of the things that pleasurable eating and drinking should be is getting back to basic uninterrupted natural ingredients . The pleasure of simply detecting the goodness of what you consume through taste. Without artificial ingredients and over processing, therefore ruining the effect of taste, the eating experience and nutrition. Ambition. Simeon has designs on expanding his business out to a few more openings. While this is the first, enjoy the beginnings of what is an experience of cafe life that has purity of ingredient at the heart. I genuinely can’t flag a better cafe in terms of concept for fresh daily baking using sound ingredients. Conclude. Was an idea of a cafe experience where natural ingredients would combat commerciality and get noticed a bad idea? Of course not. I see an optimism in what I call getting back to basics. The notion that wholesomeness is the ‘new modern trend’ should also be a nonsence. Go Wattle & Co! www.wattleandco.com

Banksy Banksy is an anonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director. Satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. Banksy’s works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. In June 2017, English musician Goldie referred to Banksy as Rob/Robert.

PROGRESSION. Banksy created a documentary film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as “the world’s first street art disaster movie”, which made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

33

2014 - Banksy regarded as a British cultural icon. Accolades: In January 2011, Banksy was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film. In 2014, Banksy was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.[9]

Origin Banksy’s work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians.[3] Banksy says that they were inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of the English musical group Massive Attack.

Banksy once characterised graffiti as a form of underclass “revenge”, or guerilla warfare that allows an individual to snatch away power, territory and glory from a bigger and better equipped enemy.

W

ith its design inspired by past Porsches like the Carrera GT super sports car and the legendary 917 and highly successful RS Spyder race cars, the 918 Spyder remains faithful to the 2010 concept car. Unlike the concept car, the two-seat production version, based on a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque, will feature a manual roof system with removable panels that can be stored in the front luggage compartment. Featuring a high revving 500-plus horsepower V8 engine assisted by two electric motors with a total of at least 218 horsepower, yet Porsche estimates it will consume only 3.0 L/100 km based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Super high performance with very low fuel consumption and emissions The 918 Spyder will be powered by a unique plug-in hybrid system that will include a high-revving, mid-mounted V8 engine with capacity of more than 4.0 liters and producing at least 500 horsepower. The engine will be based on the Porsche RS Spyder racing engine

that demonstrated its impressive performance and efficiency through multiple Michelin Green X Challenge victories in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Power will be transferred to the rear wheels via Porsche’s compact, seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox. Inside Two electric motors – one each on the front and rear axles – together will provide approximately 218 additional horsepower. This configuration also will offer an innovative, variable all-wheel drive system with independent control of the drive forces on both axles. Electrical energy will be stored in a liquid- cooled lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from a standard household outlet. Electric-only driving range is expected to be more than 16 miles on the NEDC. Recharge time will depend on each country’s electrical power network, but charging is expected to take about seven hours at 110V/10A in the United States. A quick-charge option is being evaluated to further reduce charging times.

Jackson, the untold story National Portrait gallery houses pop art.

W

hat can you do about boredom? Beat It with a Michael Jackson exhibition. We all have a certain image that comes to mind when we think of Michael Jackson, be it his iconic dance moves, his endless repertoire of songs you just can’t sit still to, or fashion statements like his sparkly white gloves and military jackets. But something we rarely consider is the impact he had on the art world, despite being THE most depicted cultural figure in visual art. So, for the first time ever, works depicting Michael Jackson by over forty contemporary artists are going to be brought together, in a brand new exhibition next year at the National Portrait Gallery, Michael Jackson: On The Wall. And it’s going to be a Thriller. This landmark exhibition explores the influence of Michael Jackson on some of the leading names in contemporary art, spanning several generations of artists across all media. Curated by Dr Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery

Aptly timed to coincide with Jackson’s would-be 60th birthday, the exhibition will ask why so many contemporary artists have been drawn to him as a subject, and why he is still so prominent in our collective cultural imagination – it’s clear there’s more to it than a simple question of Black or White. Artists featured include Andy Warhol, Isa Genzken, Maggi Hambling, David LaChapelle, Paul McCarthy, Catherine Opie, Yan Pei Ming, Grayson Perry, Jordan Wolfson and many more. Missing this exhibition would be a very Bad idea indeed, and it’s lining up to be a sell-out – your friends will be Billie Green with envy if you manage to get your hands on tickets. The exhibition will be open every day until 6pm (9pm on Thursdays and Fridays) so there’s no need to rush – Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough. Learning really has Never Felt So Good. Michael Jackson: On The Wall will run from 28th June – 21st October 2018. www.npg.org.uk
