The science of hero worship
he theory behind how and why we come to worship celebrities (and why some of us are more affected than others) is a pop-culture question almost as old as pop culture itself. Indeed, from the international mania of the New York Post’s Page Six, to increasing circulation of celebrity-driven publications like People, US, OK, and In Style, to the cult star status of gossip reporters like Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart and the New York Daily News’ Rush & Malloy, there is no question that all-things-celebrity have captured - and are keeping - our attention like never before. The science. “Like most things there’s a dimensional approach here; there are some people who are fascinated by celebrities lives, but also involved in meaningful activities and relationships in their own lives, and for these people star watching is usually a harmless diversion,” says Eric Hollander, M.D., professor of psychiatry and director of the Compulsive, Impulsive and Anxiety Disorders program at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. For others, however, things don’t go quite that way. Hollander says there are an increasing number of us for whom the
fascination with celebrities is a substitution for real life - with the focus on a celebrity replacing the focus that should be on our own lives. And that, he says, is the point at which some folks begin to get into trouble. Depression, anxiety, and a decrease in self-esteem are just some of the documented problems that can result when we take the focus off our own lives and instead focus all our energy on the life of a celebrity. Experts say that as long as there have been those who pull ahead of the crowd in fame or fortune, there has been a curious crowd wanting to follow. Dr Stuart Fischoff, who has academically studied the cult of celebrity, says the very need to find an idol and follow him is programmed into our DNA. “What’s in our DNA, as a social animal, is the interest in looking at alpha males and females; the ones who are important in the pack,” says Fischoff. We are sociologically preprogrammed to “follow the leader,” he says, and notes that we are biochemical sitting ducks for the Hollywood star system; even the stars themselves get caught up in the mystique The theory behind how and why we come to worship celebrities (and why some of us are more affected than others) is a pop-culture question almost as old as pop culture itself.

Fashion This season - Jackie JS Lee-AW16. Credit: London Fashion Weekend

LFW London Fashion Week lives...
T
he fashion capital of London continues to be a hot spot for designers showing their wears amidst rumour of a future death of the fashion show. The rising cost of shows and travel expense for buyers suggests that the business of fashion will succumb to technology where streaming and online viewing will take centre stage. A daunting prospect indeed for the lover of fashion art and fashion theatre. While the show lives on, London Fashion Week S/S 2017 saw the anticipated splashes of colour and fashion forward concoctions. History By the 1920s, the fashion show had gone mainstream. Retailers throughout the country staged shows, often in a store’s restaurant during lunch or teatime. These early shows were often more theatrical than those of today. They were frequently organized around themes—there were Parisian, Persian, Chinese, Russian, and Mexican shows, Leach notes—and often presented with narrative commentary..

Iconic Actress and pop culture icon Marilyn Monroe was among Avedon’s sitters. Recalling a portrait session with Monroe that took place in his studio in May 1957, he said, “For hours she danced and sang and flirted and did this thing that’s—she did Marilyn Monroe. And then there was the inevitable drop. And when the night was over and the white wine was over and the dancing was over, she sat in the corner like a child, with everything gone. I saw her sitting quietly without expression on her face, and I walked towards her but I wouldn’t photograph her without her knowledge of it. And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no.” Avedon managed to capture one of the most photographed stars with her public façade down, producing an image that provides a rare glimpse of her inner life.

Devon Cream Cream tea, and the Devonshire way.
T
he cream tea divides Cornwall and Devon, which differ regarding the order in which the ingredients are added together. The Devon method is to split the scone in two, cover each half with clotted cream, and then add strawberry jam on top. In Cornwall, the scone is first spread with strawberry jam, then the cream added as the topping. Our photographic documentary suggests the cornish way is best but actually this cream tea was indeed experienced in Devon. ‘Shop at the top’ - The Old Bakery, 11 Broad St, Modbury, PL21 OPU to be precise. A memorable cream tea experience of many. I happen to prefer applying the jam first. If I told you that a farmer has launched a campaign to win ‘geographical protection’ for Devon cream teas - sparking a row with Cornish rivals about which county invented it, you would appreciate that cream tea is most certainly a British social activity steeped in tradition owning an ample splash of eccentricity. Langage Farm manager Paul Winterton says he is hoping to win the backing of the Department for Food and Rural Affairs to take
the proposal to the EU. If he succeeds, the traditional afternoon combination of tea, scones, clotted cream and jam will become a protected brand. Go figure. Experience What I can say is this. I consider the Italians at being the best at interpreting human interaction with food and dining as a culture. However as a British subject, I will say that cream tea with premium ingredients does go some distance toward experiencing a sensory culinary occasion that does meet with entoxicating the imagination. Some might say that sugar and cream could well be the catalyst for such a conjuring but there is it. Earl Grey is my preferred choice for cream tea. Perhaps even a venture toward Lady Grey - a recent discovery. Lady Grey tea is a variation on the famous Earl Grey tea. Like Earl Grey it is a black tea scented with oil of bergamot (though in lower concentrations in Lady Grey). Additionally it contains lemon peel and orange peel oil. Etiquette All that is left is how you choose to pronounce scone, the right ambience, social gathering and choice of crockery. Enjoy!

Poll position The presidential authenticity race.
H
illary Diane Rodham Clinton is the 2016 Democratic nominee for president. She served as U.S. Secretary of State during the first four years of the Obama administration. She is formerly a U.S. senator from New York, first elected in 2000. She was a candidate for president in 2008. She previously served as first lady when her husband, Bill Clinton, served two terms as president. She was born in Chicago in 1947, graduated from Wellesley College and earned a law degree at Yale Law School. Contoversy In March 2015, it became publicly known that Hillary Clinton, during her tenure as United States Secretary of State, had exclusively used her family’s private email server for official communications, rather than official State Department email accounts maintained on federal servers. Those official communications included thousands of emails that would later be marked classified by the State Department retroactively. On July 5, 2016 upon concluding its investigation, the FBI stated that Clinton was “extremely careless” in handling her email
system but recommended that no charges be filed against Clinton. On July 6, 2016, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that no charges would be filed. On July 7, the State Department reopened its probe into the email controversy. On September 2, 2016, the FBI published a report on the investigation into her server which was 58 pages. Authenticity A familiar ring of a controlled performance -- the carefully parsed explanation, the combative posture -- that stretched our belief that what she’s telling us is really the whole story. People wonder: Is she playing it straight with us? Why the nagging suspicion that Brand Hillary does not include bringing to the public table who she really is? Among consumers today, authenticity means more to success than at any other time in the history of brands. The desire for authenticity is a tangible driver. Increasingly, people want to invest into brands - political as well as commercial - that have a set of values they can also buy into. As the election nears it appears that image grooming is only second place. The authenticity stopwatch will be the keeper of this election time.
“There is no formula that I’m aware of for being a successful or fulfilled woman today. ” “We need more good jobs that reward hard work with rising wages, dignity, and a ladder to a better life.”

udi is not one to shy away from using Hollywood to promote their vehicles. That goes with current cars such as the Audi R8 seen in the Iron Man films to designs of cars that do not exist such as this Fleet Shuttle Quattro Concept (opposite). Admittedly, it is pretty cool of Audi to do these types of design studies and future concepts as they hint at where Audi styling may go in the future. The idea here being a car that fits a science fiction universe but still instantly looks like an Audi. Audi did something similar for the movie I, Robot and that future design concept was a great success garnering attention for the film and for Audi. Will Audi repeat or expand on that success with the Fleet Shuttle Quattro? You decide. Seen in the film Ender’s Game marks the first time the car company has unveiled a purely virtual Audi in a feature film. With its
visionary design, the Audi fleet shuttle quattro blends easily into the world of the science fiction feature film and combines futuristic design with groundbreaking technology.
