Apple’s new pie
T
im Cook took charge of the global brand Apple on August 24 th, 2011. However, the question is, how can anyone successfully replace Steve Jobs? It all began when Steve Jobs hand-picked successor Tim Cook, who has now been in command for 6 years at the most successful brand on the planet. Tim Cook himself and many around him knew that this was always going to be one of the most-scrutinised handovers in corporate history. A few weeks after the handover of the company the master mind behind the Apple brand - Steve Jobs, who was seen as an icon of leadership and innovation, sadly died of pancreatic cancer. Let’s not forget that he was central to the polished icons of the 21st century computing: from the iPod to the iPhone and then the iPad. It was the start of a worldwide obsession and desire, to own an Apple item. Since Tim Cook has taken over the company, the number of annual iPhone sales has rocketed from 57 million to 214 million from the period of 2011 to 2016. The brands’

Apple since Tim Cook by Sophie Fitzjohn. popularity is every growing and as a result of this the number of Apple Stores has also increased from 357 stores to 463 within the 5year period. The phenomenon that is the Apple brand had 60,000 employees when Steve Jobs was head boss; Tim Cook has out done that figure with 110,000 members of staff now representing the iconic global company. It’s fair to say that the iconic apple logo has gone from strength to strength. Which is clearly reflected in the annual profit from $19.5 billion to now more in the region of $47.8 billion, the numbers are astounding and so is the fact that success has continued even when the founder himself, is no longer around to give his exceptional expertise. However, it’s interesting to see that smart phone market shares have decreased since Cook has been in charge. The figures with Steve Jobs in charge were 14.1% and later went down to 12.9% when Cook took over. The company may have a smaller market share now, but profits are up. This could be because the market has got bigger in previous years, and other competitors such as Samsung may have gained some of the market share over
iPhone 8, has arrived.
Apple. Also there is a possibility that people aren’t changing their phones as regularly. Before Cook stepped up, he was the lessvisible chief officer, the master of the supply chain who awoke at the early hours of the morning, every morning to keep the well-oiled machine going. He was the obvious candidate to replace the irreplaceable, however, analysts doubted his ability to keep the Apple magic alive. 6 years later, and the same questions arise. Few would disagree that he was the right man for the job, but with Cook, Apple is yet to release an undisputed hit product, to take the market by a storm, once again! Within the world’s biggest company, the array of products in its stores bears some similarities to that of 6 years ago, however the company Cook runs has been a complete transformation and success story. With Cook, Apple has become the world’s biggest public company and has twice broken the record for the biggest quarterly profit in history! The growing sales of the iPhone now make up more than half of Apple’s sales. Apple’s share price has also more than doubled under Cook and the companies’ achievements still continue. It’s ironic to think that on the day Job’s handed over the baton, Cook told employees: “I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change.” On this point at least, he was very wrong.
Quotes -
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. Steve Jobs. You can only do so many things great, and you should cast aside everything else. Tim Cook.

Photo android Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize bending the rules.
T
Organisers of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize have said they are reviewing the entry rules after shortlisting an image of an android for this year’s competition. The National Portrait Gallery, which organises the annual prize, said it did not disqualify the image even though it breached entry rules. The image of Erica, an android created in Japan, was taken by the Finnish artist Maija Tammi as part of a broader programme of work that is described as asking questions “about what it means to be alive”. A gallery spokeswoman said the “issue” of androids would be considered for next year’s competition. The Prize. The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize is the leading international photographic portrait competition, celebrating and promoting the very best in contemporary portrait photography. IT Exclusive...
IT Crowd Tech future, IT and the retail app by Dennis Sterne.
I
f you had a looking glass into the future of tech, you’d do little better than to have the partnership Tranquil IT interpret such future forward visions. I met up with the dynamic duo Andy Hunt (left) and Sean Watson to talk about computer tech and their retail app launch. Between Andy and Sean I found much insight into the future of computer technology. I could liken it to a sci-fi movie after effect. The kind that gives a vivid view into future technology and it’s application to people within a developing world. Background Tranquil IT was founded in 2008 and Tranquil Dev in 2013. Clients stretch from the UK to America and Bermuda. You’d assume that IT companies make short work of international communications since the rise of facetime and Skype and whatever else will spring up sooner than you know. IT support is a crucial componet if we are to keep systems in motion

Imagine an idea that computers screens are to be upgraded to an arrangement of optics worn like glasses. Your display screen projected through your eyes. The keyboard most likely a minimised sleek sensory surface. Then realise that such a concept is in development and already seen in sci-fi films such as Minority Report and the like. Conversation moved toward car computer tech and self drive cars. It seems the incredible becomes credible the moment you allow for technological advancement. The idea that a delivery service could well be unmanned in the near future once again, is the stuff of movies. It becoming clear then that futuristic film is our look through future’s window. supposed to make jobs obsolete and avoid. This points to science, bio tech, computer tech and engineering as a more feasible option for career choice. I asked the guys why IT is so male dominated. They explained that computer sytemology is intrinsically connected to building things. An interesting link between early lego enthusiasts and computer tech is common place. As the world modernises and gender roles become less hard line, this has somewhat paved a way for young women to assimilate into a world of science and technology. An enlightening development. Children so readily attune themselves to tablet functionality which is another cognitive vehicle toward an application of technology in our world. A world where tech is almost the new language. With such acceleration in the advancement of science and tech, the innevitable question of chicken and egg beckons. Are we shaping the future of techology or is the affect of technology on us shaping technology? Curious thought. But the speed of development requires a few check points marked if a disaster like Windows 8 (2012) is not to be repeated Andy and Sean. While Tranquil It’s support services are
split between PC, Mac and Linux, the future points toward Magic Leap and Weta. Magic Leap is a US startup company that is working on a head-mounted virtual retinal display which superimposes 3D computer-generated imagery over real world objects, by projecting a digital light field into the user’s eye, involving technologies potentially suited to applications in augmented reality and computer vision. Weta Digital has developed several proprietary software packages to achieve groundbreaking visual effects. Organite. Andy has a background in retail making a foundation for the design of their retail app ‘Organite’. Their target market starts at smaller businesses with La Ruche womenswear the first line of sight. An app that turns your tablet into a point of sale system and allows you to conduct business from just about anywhere is clearly a no brainer for business. Additional features such as inventory management, reporting and analytics, customer loyalty tools, and sales insights, allowing you to improve your business and serve your customers better. www.tranquilit.net

ew York, shows begun with a glamorous bang courtesy of Tom Ford and Kaia Gerber made her catwalk debut at Raf Simons’s sophomore Calvin Klein collection. The London shows kicked off with a bridal-inspired show from Ryan Lo and an Eighties moment from Ashley Williams. Fendi Fendi always gets the girls, and this season was no different. Kendall, Gigi, Bella, Kaia and Adwoa all joined the line-up. We love this jacket (right) worn by Kendall. It’s unapologetic luxury logomania..
Simone Rocha London Fashion Week doesn’t come more romantic that Simone Rocha’s heavenly collections - although, there is always a touch of the subversive to deter any saccharine. Christopher Kane The muse for Christopher Kane’s collection was the domestic goddess: “A real strong, perfect woman but she’s slowly breaking inside,” he told Vogue. We were particularly taken by the mops interpreted in silk fringe on dresses and tassels on shoes, but we predict the drying clips will be next year’s equivalent of Kane’s cable ties. Housekeeping never looked cooler..

Gin in a bottle The dry stuff is definitely sexy again.
O
k, so you’ve probably heard that gin is cool or even sexy again. Where have you been? I hear you say. But when supermarkets start stocking locally brewed gin and my local restaurant the ‘Lemon Tree’ happens upon making it’s courtyard a gin garden - I take notice. Consideration. Have we reached peak gin yet? Not so long ago, ordering a gin and tonic meant being served a rather bland but perfectly acceptable Gordon’s gin with a slice of lemon and a mainstream mixer. These days, the picture is a little more complicated. Ask for the same drink and you’ll more than likely be asked to navigate your way around a back bar filled with dozens of bottles of boutique-distilled gin with names like Half Hitch, Opihr and Ransom Old Tom. It is the quintessentially British drink once derided by William Hogarth as the scourge of 18 century society. Until recently, few people could name anyone other than senior
members of the Royal Family as fans of gin but all that is changing. A surge in the juniper-based spirit’s popularity has seen a dramatic rise in the number of craft gin makers setting up business. Just five micro-distilleries opened in the UK between 2008 and 2011: the same number opened in 2012, 11 started production in 2013 and a projected 15 distilleries were up and running by the end of 2014, all producing varieties of the three gin classifications – standard, premium and London Dry. Here we in 2017 and the surge sees no sign of slowing World’s best. All shades covered Rihanna Launches Fenty Beauty.
R
ihanna launches her global makeup brand, Fenty Beauty, in an unprecedented 1,600 stores across 17 countries in one day. The beauty industry’s most anticipated launch, Fenty Beauty was created by Rihanna with a vision that’s always ahead of the game – Fenty Beauty redefines the rules with light-asair formulas that love to be layered, in a global lineup of shades designed for all. Rihanna was inspired to create Fenty Beauty after trying to find products that worked across all skin types and tones. With Rihanna’s mandate of inclusivity, Fenty Beauty offers a wide range of products for traditionally hard-to-match skin tones, creating formulas that work for all skin types, and pinpointing universal shades. The brand is both edgy and feminine, with a complexion-focused product assortment developed to work together and provide everyone with Rihanna’s real-life method for killer radiance, The Fenty Face. “The Fenty Face was created for women of all skin tones, of all personalities,” she says. “These steps are key to starting your makeup, no matter the look you’re going for. This is where the fun begins.” For Rihanna, the secret to radiance lies in the very first step of the Fenty Face,
a soft matte filt’r—because no matter your skin type, adding glow on glow = unwanted shine. The second step? Layer your highlight for strategically-placed glow—it’s all about lighting up where you want. Lastly, get ahead of shine by blotting on the fly, wherever and whenever; Rihanna believes that being photo-ready means being shine-free. Tested backstage, on stage, and in real life, The Fenty Face is the key to unlocking all of makeup’s limitless possibilities. This process is at the core of this 91-sku line, which includes 40 shades of Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation; 1 universal Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer; 30 magnetic Match Stix Skinsticks, in both matte and shimmer finishes to contour, correct, conceal, highlight and blush; 6 cream-powder hybrid Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters for face and eyes; Invisimatte Blotting Powder and Paper; 1 universal lip gloss known as Gloss Bomb; and a variety of application tools. In addition to creating every detail of each product in her cosmetics collection, Rihanna also personally appointed three prestigious makeup artists to represent Fenty Beauty around the world. This Global Artistry Team includes James Kaliardos as Resident Artist, and Priscilla Ono and Hector Espinal as Global Makeup Artists.

A little bit of country
W
hen Rolling Stone magazine called her ‘unsinkable’ in 1980, nobody could have predicted she’d still be releasing albums at the age of 71! Nevertheless, Dolly Parton continues her reign as the queen of country music as she prepares for the 2017 release of her first children’s album, I Believe in You. Born on 19 th January, 1946, Dolly Rebecca Parton was the fourth of twelve children welcomed by Tennessee farmer Robert Lee Parton and his wife, Avie. Singing in church from an early age, Parton’s first radio performance occurred when she was only ten years old. After high school, Parton moved to Nashville. She signed with Combine Publishing as a songwriter and then with Monument Records as an artist, but her breakthrough came when she was hired to appear on Porter Wagoner’s syndicated tv show after the release of her single, ‘Dumb Blonde’. The Wagoner-Parton partnership was hugely successful, resulting in a series of hit records and thirteen albums. Meanwhile, Parton continued to push herself as an actress, producer and solo artist, releasing hits like ‘Coat of Many Colors’ (1971), ‘Jolene’ (1974) and ‘I Will Always Love You’ (1974).
With 43 solo studio albums, 4 solo albums, 18 collaboration albums and 184 compilation albums worldwide, Parton’s discography is immense. It is hardly surprising that she is the most honoured female country performer of all time. Notable honours include her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, receipt of the Living Legend Award from the US Library of Congress in 2004, a 2005 nomination for the National Medal of Arts and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. But this immense artistic output is only part of the Parton story. Parton has re-invested much of her income back into her native East Tennessee. Well known for her philanthropic work, Parton formed the Dollywood Foundation to support her charitable efforts and its ‘My People Fund’ raised $12 million for victims of wildfires in Tennessee in 2016. Parton’s keen desire to promote literacy is reflected in the work carried out by the Imagination Library. To date, the library has sent over 94 million free books to the homes of preschool children across the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia. Profits from I Believe In You, available digitally from September 29 and in store on October 13, will benefit the Imagination Library.
